Richmond MLAs Rob Howard and John Yap have thrown their support behind Liberal leadership frontrunner Kevin Falcon. Richmond East MLA Linda Reid has yet to publicly declare her support for any of the current candidates. That may be because she’s thinking of running herself, according to political commentator Keith Baldrey, speaking about a rumour on BCTV’s Noon News Wednesday. If Reid did throw her hat into the leadership ring, it would not be the first time. Reid ran for the Liberal leadership back in 1992. Reid was not available for comment yesterday, and Howard and Yap said they were not aware of the rumour. About Falcon, however, Richmond-Steveston MLA Yap said he’s happy to support “a new generation of leader. “He’s young and dynamic, yet has a great breadth of experience having been minister of two large and complex ministries: health and transportation,” said Yap. “I remember well, prior to my personal decision to enter public life, a very young and energetic transportation minister, Kevin Falcon, working hard to promote the Canada Line, which we all now enjoy.” see MLA page 6

Today, Friday, Dec. 3, the City of Richmond marks its 20th birthday. It was two decades ago that the Township of Richmond became a big city. Since then, it’s grown out of all recognition and exploded in size and demographics. “Our population has increased over 50 per cent … we are on the brink of surpassing 200,000 residents,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “There’s also been a visible shift in the diversity of our community. “We have the largest population of immigrants proportionately of any city in Canada.” Some interesting statistics regarding growth in Richmond over the last 20 years include: ❚ Amount of on-street and off-street bike routes has grown from 10 km to over 50 km. ❚ Four new bridges opened — No. 2 Road, airport connector, Canada Line to YVR, Canada Line to Vancouver (including Canada Line cycling bridge). ❚ From 1991 to 2006, the percentage of the population that reported they were not born in Canada increased from 35.2 per cent to 57.4 per cent. ❚ A 287.6-per-cent increase in the number of apartments (over fives storeys) from 1991 to 2006 (an increase of 2,790 units to a total of 3,760 units). ❚ Four sheets of ice for community recreation in 1990 (two Seafair, two Minoru) compared to 10 sheets in 2010 (two Minoru, six Richmond Ice Centre, two Richmond Olympic Oval) and an increase from 127,800 square feet of community recreation space to 230,000 square feet. ❚ Increase of 500 acres of park and school ground to a total of 1,700 acres.

Local firm’s rapid AIDS test hits U.S. A rapid HIV test, developed and produced by a Richmond-based company, was approved this week by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for sale in the giant and lucrative American market. BioLytical’s INSTI HIV Rapid Antibody Test, which is available in more than 50 countries, is designed to detect antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 in one minute. The next fastest tests take 20 minutes. “The significance of this approval is massive in our eyes and with World AIDS Day, it’s a huge thing for B.C. to be proud of,” said bioLytical chairman Robert Mackie.
“We are the only point-of-care HIV test approved in Canada right now. And we are only one of eight Canadian companies in history to get approval of a medical diagnostic device by the FDA.” BioLytical — based at Commerce Parkway, just south of the No. 6 Road Highway 91 intersection — has spent $45 million on developing the INSTI test and bringing it to the marketplace, said Mackie. Man gets 11 years for killing of father of four BY ALAN CAMPBELL

A man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with a deadly home invasion five years ago was sentenced to 11 years in jail Wednesday in B.C. Supreme Court. Berhanei Fabian Peynado was charged with first-degree murder in the November 2005 slaying of Antonio “Toni” Serdoncillo at a
Richmond home. Serdoncillo, a father of four, had just arrived in Canada on a work visa from the Philippines. The 45-year-old was planning to bring his family to Canada. The News reported in October how, nearly five years after Serdoncillo was killed in the violent home invasion at 5580 Gibbons Dr., one of his killers, Peynado, pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
The Vancouver man was originally charged with first-degree murder in 2007, along with two other men. He was 25 at the time of his arrest. One of his co-accused, Michiko Derrick States, still faces firstdegree murder charges. He is scheduled to appear in court this month to fix a trial date. A third accused — from Halifax — was a young offender at the time and was never named.
Charges against him were dropped. A fourth man, Derek Edward Schillington, of Port Moody, was charged with being an accessory after the fact. The arrests were made after an 18-month long investigation by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), working with police in Calgary and Halifax. — with files from Postmedia News and Nelson Bennett

Howard worked with Falcon when Howard, then a city councillor, sat on the Regional Transportation Committee. “I had some interactions with him at that point and was pleased with how he carried himself. When I made the decision to run, he reached out to me personally, and I’ve seen him reach out to others. He’s a great debater and through his network, he’s able to reach to all corners of the province.” Yap said his and Howard’s decision to support Falcon, 47, were made independently, but that they had conversations about the various candidates and are happy to be on the same side. “It makes our relationship smoother over the next few months,” said Yap. Falcon has been considered right of the Liberal Party, however both Yap and Howard disagree with that assessment. “Having worked with him for the past five years, I would say reports of him being right wing are exaggerated.” Moreover, he’s a person who listens and learns, said Yap. “And as someone with a young family (Falcon has a 10month-old child) he can relate to the needs of families.” Howard added, “In my opinion, he looks at the facts and makes decisions based on the facts, not always based on ideology.”

Falcon’s biggest challenge in getting himself elected as leader of the BC Liberals is time, according to Howard. “The leadership vote is Feb. 26, and with Christmas in there, it’s a very tight time frame.” Falcon is now up against Attorney General Michael de Jong, a lawyer who entered the race yesterday. Also in the running are former cabinet ministers George Abbott and Moira Stilwell, who announced their candidacies last week. Radio talk show host and former MLA Christy Clark has said she is thinking about entering the race, and Solicitor General Rich Coleman announced yesterday he’d planned to enter this week, but has since changed his mind. Regarding the leadership vote, Yap said the party is planning to adopt a different voting system for the leadership race. Instead of giving one person one vote, the Liberals will allow each riding have 100 votes regardless whether there are 50 or 500 eligible voters. The votes will be split on a percentage basis. “Every riding will have an equal say. One-member-one-vote favours large, urban centres. The BC Liberal Party believes every riding should be treated equality.” The vote to ratify the voting system will happen Feb. 12.

Rick Galli, chief technical officer for bioLytical, said that getting market approval in the U.S. is “as we affectionately call it, the Holy Grail for this particular kind of product.” Galli said that U.S. medical officials are moving toward using rapid HIV tests as the standard of care. “They are trying to move the entire testing program out of the laboratory and into point-of-care settings.” Mackie said the INSTI kit is popular among anti-HIV groups working in Africa because of its speed and accuracy. “People in Africa often don’t come back for their test results because it normally takes a week to 10 days. Friends lose bail money
Firearms suspect faces 20 charges A man has appeared in court charged with 15 counts of firearms offences. Robert J. Achadinha appeared in custody on Wednesday at Richmond Provincial Court. Achadinha faces a total of 20 charges, which range from illegally possessing a firearm to manufacturing a firearm and possessing a restricted firearm with ammunition. He is further accused of possessing counterfeit money and trafficking a controlled substance. Some of the alleged offences took place in Richmond, while the majority were in Surrey. Achadinha’s case was deferred until later this month, when he will appear from custody by video conference.

‘Shady’ thief sought Richmond RCMP is appealing for the public’s help in tracking down a “shady” male responsible for a theft at Staples. The suspect was wearing a black short sleeve t-shirt with the word “SHADY” written in white across the front of the t-shirt and was wearing dark jeans. When Donna Chan and her husband Martin laid eyes on their baby daughter for the first time, it was a magical moment neither will ever forget. The Richmond couple travelled to China four years ago to bring home their ninemonth-old daughter Katie. Martin (who doesn’t want his last name used) vividly remembers that instant when they walked into the orphanage and he caught Katie’s eye. “I saw my daughter right away and she was smiling, it was fantastic,” he said,

Although adoption month ended a few days ago, Chan wanted to share her story “to encourage people not to be scared or intimidated by the process. It is so worthwhile when you hold your beautiful child in your arms.” The couple know very little about Katie’s birth mother, but they were told the region she is from and that Katie spent the first nine months of her life in the orphanage. Martin said that when he and Donna initially discussed adoption, he was keen but he did fear “the big unknown.” “The paper work was mind-boggling, but when we actually had our daughter in our arms, it was … priceless,” said Martin. Today, their five-year-old daughter is happy and thriving in her new home. Both said it took a bit of time for Katie to adjust to all the new changes in her life, however, they settled into a

Over the course of the year, prior to Katie’s adoption, the couple attended a series of courses through Family Services of Greater Vancouver. It gave them a better understanding about the emotional impact Katie would feel coming here from a foreign land, with parents
she barely knew. To prepare for the day when they told Katie about her adoption, Chan started working on a life book as soon as they adopted her. “When she was about three and a half years old, we showed her photos from her orphanage of her and her friends, including ones that we are still in touch with,” said Chan. see Family page 9

In Werbenuk v. Werbenuk Estate, William Werbenuk made a Will in 2006 in which his four daughters were disinherited in favour of his son. Reasons for judgment were released earlier this week. Mr. Werbenuk, who died in 2008 at age 86, was not an easy person. The Court described him as a “hard, rigid” man who was a “racist”, and was abusive of women, including his daughters. Meanwhile, he had a good relationship with his son. In spite of this, his daughters made their best efforts to maintain a relationship with him, even after they left the house. The Court, in a careful analysis, varied the Will dramatically. Each of the five children was granted a (near equal) share, and it was based partly on their financial situations (normally Courts consider legal and moral duties of the deceased, and the Court did consider those issues at length, but it was clear that some of the children were in great need, and the Court is certainly not prevented in these cases from considering a child’s need). Mr. Werbenuk’s Will was extremely narrow and vulnerable to a challenge under the Wills Variation Act. His daughters earned a just result. I am curious whether the son might appeal.

Continued from page 8 When asked why they didn’t adopt a child from B.C. or another province, Chan said: “We thought about adopting in Canada but we knew the wait time would be very long.” However, one of the most important considerations for choosing an international adoption was the fact that the birth mother could change her mind at the eleventh-hour. “I knew of a couple of adoptive parents, who, at the last minute, were told the birth mother had changed her mind and they had to live through the heartache of losing a child,” Chan explained. However, an international adoption process isn’t without its challenges. It can be mired in paper work, as couples have to fill out reams of forms just to get the wheels in motion. “It was just over a year before we held her in our arms,” said Chan. “We were lucky as we were expedited because my parents were originally from China and therefore we qualified for the expedited status for adoption through China.”

Leaks strip away spin There was much hand-wringing in high places this week as the whistle-blower website WikiLeaks released 250,000 diplomatic cables. The cables contained unguarded comments and information circulating in the U.S. diplomatic corps. Such as news that Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s government is considered corrupt. And that many Middle Eastern states view Iran as a destabilizing force. Closer to home we’ve learned CSIS is pouting that Canadian courts are hampering its ability to shake down suspected “terrorists” by insisting on their civil rights. So far the revelations haven’t been exactly earth-shattering. But U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is not amused, calling the leaks an “attack on America’s foreign policy interests.” Truth is, the cables present a refreshing change: world situations described with colourful candour and stripped of their usual spin. Despite its bad-boy reputation, WikiLeaks provides a valuable function — a check on power. It does so by providing us with information we need to question decisions and call leaders to account. Fact is, more blood has been spilled and more damage caused when citizens were kept in the dark about the actions of their governments. The weapons of mass destruction that didn’t exist, yet were used to justify starting a war, come to mind. There’s also the small issue of the sub-prime mortgage meltdown and global economic crisis ignored by those in a position to see it coming. Long live the leaks. — North Shore News editorial

Costly art is wasteful The Editor, Open letter to the City of Richmond: Give your collective heads a shake. The past decade has been a challenge for many families across B.C. Richmond residents continue to struggle to make ends meet — and many are not succeeding. Child poverty and homelessness rates are on the rise. Richmond’s 2010 utility rate increased seven per cent, after rising nine per cent in 2009. Our property taxes are predicted to rise over eight per cent to finance a transportation plan put into place by unelected, unaccountable TransLink Board members. In a recent Richmond News article (Nov. 26 Council divided on Biennale) our city councillors are undecided on whether to buy a giant red wave for $400,000 or a giant chrome bust of a former communist dictator for $700,000? Planning for a harsh winter
“Winter is coming I know. It’s bringing the ice and the snow.” This familiar children’s rhyme reminds us of the coming winter. We have already had an early taste of what could come in abundance for the next four months. According to weather experts and the Farmer’s Almanac, the 2010-’11 season will be very extreme, possibly the worst since 1955. Two years ago when Richmond experienced excessive snow falls, many citizens complained about the poor snow service response on residential roads and many people had difficulty getting out of their subdivisions. This level of service had not been previously provided because of prohibitive costs. Estimates in increased capital costs for additional trucks and plows, if the city were to clear snow from all roads, were $4.2 million, with increased operating costs for staffing and supplies another $2 million. Previously, the regular snow removal budget was approximately $407,000. This year it is $550,000, which is the average of the totals spent in the previous seven years. Thanks to a mild new year, so far we have only spent half this budget. In response to public concerns, council has looked at ways to improve snow removal service. Firstly, we purchased some new equipment, including a $430,000 snow shed. This facility can house more

dump trucks, decreasing their preparation time and increasing response time. It also keeps the salt from freezing, ensuring it spreads properly avoiding delays. A specialty brine truck was purchased for $110,000. Regular Patroller staff, who work 24/7 shifts, are trained to use this vehicle, allowing them to respond immediately to icy roads or freezing conditions versus waiting for staff to be called in to operate the dump trucks. Four one-tonne medium duty trucks were equipped with front plows to help with snow clearing, in addition to the dump trucks already available. Secondly, we amended the Roadways — Ice and Snow Removal policy to add third priority routes. First priority is given to all major arterial section line roads and bus routes. Second priority is major collector roads. Snow plowing is done only when salting is ineffective. Council approved a third priority route of snow removal service which includes designated collector roads and roads of local importance. Salting and plowing on these new routes will only be done when the needs of the first and second priority routes have
been met. These routes include approximately 77 kilometres of road and were determined in consultation with the community and the Board of Education. The cost of this additional service is $90,000 for each complete circuit. As funding for this service was not provided in the 2010 budget, if it is needed this winter, it will be taken from the sanding and salting budget which has a balance of $567,860. However, we cannot continue to dip into this account as it will be needed to pay for sanding and salting. If we continue to support the third priority option in a severe winter, we will need to dedicate specific funds toward this service. It is important to realize third priority routes will simply be that — third priority. The service won’t be provided automatically. For people who live in the interior of a subdivision, like myself, we must ensure we are fully prepared and outfit our vehicles with snow tires. It is simply too expensive to provide service to every corner of the city. For Richmond residents with health or mobility problems that might need assistance during winter storms, a “Snow Angels” volunteer registry has been established. It provides free services, including pick up and delivery of medications or snow removal. We also have, on the city website, a “for hire” listing of private contractors available for snow removal.

The Editor, Re: “Oval is a gutsy asset to Richmond,” Letters, Nov. 24. My own (letter) insisted that (the oval) be inclusive to all citizens, not exclusive and discriminatory as the oval appears to be run currently. I would encourage Mr. Rex Mears and other fans of the oval to read Olympic-related books written by award-winning investigative journalist Andrew Jennings, such as Lords of the Rings. Mr. Jennings exposes the IOC as basically an over -hyped side show that travels the world over searching for ready, willing and able awe-struck victims, naive enough to host a two-week Olympic party, but at the inevitable cost of a huge “post Olympics” local taxpayer-funded “fiscal hangover” for the next several decades. During this post-Olympic hangover, the bamboozled local officialdom is left with an even bigger headache of what to do with leftover Olympic facilities. The PR words “ legacy” and “endowment” etc. are often used instead of the more apropos “white elephant.” Vancouver calls theirs, the Olympic Village. Richmond’s is called the Olympic Oval. Regardless, there is overwhelming evidence to redundantly conclude that the oval is, de-facto, a public building, hence should be accessible to the general public, free of charge for basic admission, as opposed to its
current manifestation as a de-facto private club. Such evidence includes such facts as the oval exists on city-owned land assessed at $70 million, and that funds for the oval’s capital and operating costs can be easily traced from various levels of government. Regarding my recent visit to the oval, I had no intention to use the facility per se or any of its equipment, but simply tour the inside. Thus, why is the publically-funded oval set up so as to exclude “free range” nonmember citizen/taxpayers who may simply wish to walk around the interior and “kick the tires” on their $200 million public oval investment? In using just two annual funding sources ($5 million in casino funds and the city’s $1.5 million oval subsidy), and Richmond’s population of approximately 180,000, that works out to $36 per year in public funds for every man, woman and child being directed to subsidize this “members only” private club in a publically-owned building. Suggestion: Those who act as oval apologists should perhaps make the city an offer to purchase the oval, end this charade, then myself and perhaps other Richmond citizens will no longer be obligated to subsidize your “private members only” oval club with our public tax dollars, which is, currently, another unfortunate oval fact. Chevrolet Cruzes to success Roomy and stylish, this proven compact winner rewrites history books

Do you have a Chevette or an older Cavalier in your past car ownership history (most of us do) and perhaps a few not-so-fond memories to go with them? Even GM admits that maybe its older compact car creations weren’t the best — but the new Chevrolet Cruze is very different. Kevin Williams, new president and managing director of GM Canada, points to the hot-selling Chevrolet Equinox, the GMC Terrain, the Buick Regal and Buick LeCrosse as product
examples of the new GM. “These are proof points that GM can deliver ... something that we haven’t always delivered on in the past,” conceded Williams. No longer concerned about being No. 1 in the market place, the focus of
the new GM is on having sustainable profitable growth. “No more
chasing market share, with incentives or unprofit-
able fleet business,” said Williams. “If we are No. 2, but profitable, we are comfortable with that. The core vision of the new GM is designing, building the
world’s best vehicles.” While Cruze is new to Canada, it’s actually a proven product that’s already sold in 60 countries around the world. Near-mid-size interior dimensions make the Cruze the roomiest car in its class and it comes with two new high-efficiency engines that allow it to offer impressively frugal fuel economy numbers. Overall fit and finish is also on par with the best in this market sector and particularly impressive is the level of exterior noise suppression. my surprise), cabin quietness would get my vote for best in class and as good as some far more expensive vehicles. Cruze also offers segment-leading passive safety features with ten standard airbags, which is four more than generally considered the norm. Two extra airbags are built into its rear seat, protecting the outboard seating positions, plus it has front seat knee bolster bags that both protect and help to correctly position the front seat occupants in a collision. It’s the first passenger car to receive maximum scores (for occupant protection) in both the European frontal offset collision and the side-impact crash (against a moving deformable barrier) tests. The European New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP) has been providing crash test ratings since 1997. The base engine in the Cruze, a 1.8-litre, fourcylinder (LS trim), and its optional 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (LT and LTZ trim) produce an identical (138) maximum horsepower number. The performance difference is in the higher torque output (148 lb.-ft.) of the turbo engine and the lower engine speed (1,850 rpm) at which it’s provided. The 1.4-litre’s turbocharger is a unique design
that’s incorporated into the exhaust manifold as a single component. This saves weight, helps the engine to warm up faster and reduces exhaust emissions. Both engines run on regular gas and come with sixspeed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions. In addition to more power at low engine speeds, the turbo engine also provides better fuel economy. There’s a delayed release on the turbo/manual combination, which will come as a “Cruze Eco” edition with a special wheel and aero package and it’s expected to achieve a 5.0-litre/100 km highway fuel economy rating. The Cruze comes in four trim levels, LS, Eco, LT and LTZ. In addition to the stuff already mentioned, the base (LS) edition comes with electronic stability control, power windows and locks, remote entry and audio input jacks. The top-line LTZ includes leather (front heated) seats, a 17-inch wheel package, rear park assist and climate control air conditioning. The LT trim line is expected to account for 70 per cent of sales and there’s an extra bonus if you order a Cruze before next Jan. 10. A “first to Cruze” program gives you the choice of a free set of winter tires or an Apple iPad with OnStar MyLink Apps installed. GM is listening to customers a lot differently
than in the past, according to Williams. And the Chevrolet Cruze design team engineers sure did their homework.

because they were successful in returning to Earth. Apollo 13 was the third Apollo mission intended to land on the moon, but an oxygen tank rupture made a lunar landing impossible and put the lives of the crew in danger. Fortunately, the ship and its crew made it safely back to Earth on April 17, 1970 — just more than 40 years ago. The entire world breathed a sigh of relief, but nobody celebrated more than the people working at mission control in Houston’s Johnson Space Center. On a recent visit to the centre, we had the chance to go behind the scenes and see the original mission control and meet a man who used to work there. Terry Hartman worked in Mission Control when the Apollo 13 incident took place. He was also in Mission Control on the day Neil

Armstrong walked on the moon, so when he tells you what Mission Control was like “back in the day” — you can believe him. “In 1969 we used stateof-the-art equipment including rotary dial phones and slide rulers in Mission Control,” Hartman said with a laugh during a recent tour of the facility. “Those screens you see in the green room aren’t
computers like we have today, either. Each person looked at raw data on the screen and had to relate it back to what was actually happening aboard the ship.” Hartman is retired now, but still gives tours to visitors that come to see the behind-the scenes workings of the centre. Yeats); or mango panna cotta with raspberry jelly (Homage to Fernand Leger, by Robert Ballagh). My experience of Art Tea in the comfortable drawing room started with a flute of Champagne and a tiered tray of goodies. The first tier was filled with savoury sandwiches — chicken and pesto on sunflower bread,
oak smoked Irish salmon on brown soda bread with horseradish cream, cucumber with cream cheese and chive on tomato bread, and bridge rolls with egg mayonnaise and fresh cress. The second tier bore fresh currant scones, sticky portercake, tart lemon cake and colour-blocked battenberg cake. On the top tier sat creme fraiche, raspberry jam and tart lemon curd. Then, speaking softly, as if he were gently wak-
ing me from a nap as I sunk back into the overstuffed couch cushions in front of a simmering fire, my waiter recommended a delicious honeybush orange herbal tea, sweet and delicate. The grand finale emerged in the form of three paintinginspired pastries, displayed in front of small prints indicating their artistic provenance: rosewater and orange mousse on white chocolate feuilletine (Roses and Temple, by
Patrick Hennessy); vanilla biscuit with orange curd (Frying Pan, Funnel, Eggs & Lemons, by William Scott); and raspberry and passion fruit tart (Futile Defence (Fabricated Evidence), 1998, by John Boyd). Each was beautifully executed and I scarfed them down despite an already full belly. The Art Tea at The Merrion Hotel costs approximately $47 per person, extra for Champagne.

The tram tour also allowed us to see the astronaut training facility and watch astronauts working with replicas of the space shuttle and the International Space Station — including the Canadarm. The behindthe-scenes tour ended with a stop at Rocket Park to see actual rockets used in NASA’s space program. Our guide explained that there is a backup made for every rocket and space module used in the space program. When the Apollo 13 astronauts were in the midst

Dress for Success gives hope, and suits A year after losing her job Ande Alexander turned to the organization for help, receiving new clothes and a vital boost of confidence BY MICHELLE HOPKINS

Ande Alexander has been pounding the pavement looking for work for more than a year now. The office manager/bookkeeper was laid off after five years when the small company she worked for was sold at the height of the economic downturn. “The company wasn’t doing as well as it could so the owner decided to retire and sell it,” said the long time Richmond resident. “At the time, I wasn’t too worried. “I had more than 15 years experienced and worked hard, so I thought I’d get a job fairly quickly.” As months passed by with no job prospect, Alexander started to get despondent and depressed. Last month, she got a huge boost to her self-esteem by the non-profit organization, Dress for Success Vancouver. Dress for Success Vancouver helps low and no income women transition back into the workforce by providing them, free of charge, everything they need to dress professionally for interviews. “Through the Richmond Employment Resource Centre, I received an email telling me about Dress for Success’ upcoming talk,” said Alexander. The McNair secondary graduate decided to attend and she said the seminar was very informative, positive and she went home armed with practical tips for finding work. “Then, I find out I could set up an appointment to go to Dress for Success’s office downtown (Vancouver),” she said. “I scraped together all my grocery money because I thought
I’d have to pay something for the business suit.” Alexander’s face beams as she recalls how she arrived and was welcomed like a friend. Then, her personal shopper took her around to “shop” for a new suit, together with all accessories. “It was amazing, there were all these racks filled with suits, blouses, sweaters, boots, shoes and handbags,” Alexander said. “My personal shopper helped me choose a suit, a brand new Ralph Lauren skirt and jacket, blouses, a sweater, trench coat, boots, silk scarf, make up and jewelry. “I was completely overwhelmed.” Alexander went on to say how much fun she had and how it was “a real morale booster.” “When I go for an interview, I feel more self-confident,” Alexander said. Help from Dress for Success Vancouver doesn’t end there. Once she secures a job, Alexander gets to go back and choose two more new suits, complete with shoes, a purse and more. “It’s pretty isolating when you are spending literally hours on your computer looking for work,” she said. “Your confidence erodes as time goes on … Dress for Success has been amazing and it’s changed my attitude for the better.” Those sentiments are echoed often at Dress for Success Vancouver, said Deborah Twocock, its executive director. “Dress for Success provides hope, encouragement, education and skills training to women, who for whatever reason, can’t find work,’ said Twocock. “Last month alone, we helped 180 women. Sadly, our business
party.” Former clients, who have successfully returned to the workforce, become members who meet monthly for networking and an education program. The average age for most women who come into the organization is 40 and over, although Twocock said, they still see immigrant women, refugees and young single mothers under 40. “It’s life changing for many of our clients,” said Twocock. “We see a lot of hugs and lots of tears.”

METHOD: Sweat onions in olive oil until translucent. Add celery and cook for three-to-five minutes on medium heat. Add yams and sweat for two more minutes. Add vegetable stock, apple juice and bay leaf, and simmer until vegetables are cooked, about 15 - 20 minutes. Add apples and chestnuts, cook for another three-to-five minutes, add cream and blend in blender until smooth. Pass through a fine sieve and season. Soup can now be served or refrigerated and reheated when needed. Pour soup into serving bowl and finish with a swirl of whipping cream and a small grating of fresh nutmeg, enjoy!

Griffins poised to contend for ‘AAA’ provincial title
A year ago, they came within a win of delivering their school its first-ever senior boys basketball title. Now, the RC Palmer Griffins are confident they can challenge again, except this time back on the province’s biggest stage. The four-time defending Richmond champions will be competing with the big boys again at the “AAA” level when the playoffs begin in February and there is every reason to believe they will be a serious threat at the Langley Events Centre. “With all starters returning and the addition of some solid grade Grade 10 and 11s, this is very talented team that is capable of winning the whole thing,” said veteran head coach Paul Eberhardt. “While many consider us to be an underdog due to our lack of size, I believe we will give team’s great difficulties defending our quickness and shooting ability.” The Griffins starting five features plenty of experience in seniors Billy Cheng and Vijay Dhillon, who were arguably the team’s top two players the last time it competed at the provincial “AAA” tournament two years ago. Cheng was co-MVP of the Richmond League last season and a first team allstar at the Lower Mainland and Provincial tourneys. He averaged 15.5 points per game and six assists, while this summer he played for Team B.C. at the U17 Nationals. He is a natural to run Eberhardt’s up-tempo attack from the point guard position. “Billy sees the game as good as any point guard I have ever coached,” says

test and he should dominate even more. “Vijay is a great outside shooter and he goes to the hoop hard with a very quick first step and great explosiveness,” continued Eberhardt. “He has a phenomenal work ethic and will be an excellent role model for all of the new players on the team.” Rounding out the trio of B.C. Under 17 players in the Palmer line-up is guardforward Mike Zayas who averaged 16 points and eight rebounds per game a year ago. He is a terrific transitional player that should put up even bigger numbers this season. In the paint, the Griffins will be leaning heavily on 6-foot-3 Ranjodh Hare who averaged a double-double in points (12.8) and rebounds (12) in his Grade 11 year. “Ranjodh is a true warrior and he is one of the hardest workers you will find on a basketball court,” added Eberhardt. “He consistently outplays much taller opponents and he is an amazing outlet passer which starts our fast break.” Rounding out the starting five is guard Maziar Arjmandi who is one of the team’s biggest threats from beyond the arc. On the bench, look for promising Grade 10 Jamie Madewan to see significant minutes. He was Palmer’s leading scorer on the Grade 9 team that finished third at the provincials. One of the Griffins’ first big tests of the season will be next week’s HSBC Classic. They open play Wednesday at Churchill against Point Grey.

regular regime of training. He finds no problem doing a 3 ½ hour bike ride with his friends. “While the weather is still nice, my buddies and I will be cycling this afternoon from Vancouver to Lions Bay.” Linden adds. “It is non-competitive and it is also a chance to get out and
cycle in such nice weather.” He also jogs on the trails in Lynn Valley in North Vancouver. Closer to his home, he runs from 45 minutes to one hour along Jericho Beach. Running is an activity he usually takes up in the fall and in the winter he cross country skis. Every season Linden takes up a sport and when it comes to cycling it is the camaraderie and team environment which he finds most enjoyable of his experiences. In September of this year, he competed in the ‘RBC GranFondo’ Whistler event which was a challenging 120-kilometre bike ride from Vancouver to Whistler. Linden’s time of 3:35:45 left him 23rd out of 1174 participants in the 40-49 age category. “Cycling also gives me
a chance to see the world,” added Linden, referring to Trans Portugal — a nine day, 1150 kilometer mountain bike stage race held last spring through the Portuguese countryside. Linden plans to compete in the inaugural ‘RBC Grandfondo Kelowna’ next July. He has also been active in the fitness business world as he recently opened Club 16. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, Linden took part in the torch relay when the flame was in Vancouver before the opening ceremony. The first time I interviewed former Canuck player and captain Trevor Linden was in 1994 for television. Standing outside the dressing room waiting, I had missed him as he had already gone inside. Not being allowed to enter, I didn’t know what to do until a veteran reporter from CKNW had volunteered to go inside on my behalf. In a matter of minutes, Linden had come out for the interview. He was gracious in answering my questions when I knew little about hockey back then. Fast forward to 2010, #16 is now retired and is following his passion for cycling. I had the opportunity to do a phone interview with him
and we chatted about his new fitness path. Linden is an avid and competitive cyclist. He first caught the cycling bug when his wife Cristina introduced him to the sport in the 1990s which led to his first bike race ‘Test of Metal,’ a grueling 67 kilometer point-to-point mountain bike race through Squamish’s world-renowned trails. It was the start of his new passion. “I used that race and others to recharge my batteries and it was at a time I needed to de-stress,” he said. Other big events in which Linden has competed include the ‘Sea to Summit’ and in the summer of 2007 he endured the Trans Alp bike race, a 600 km journey across the European Alps. He and his racing teammate, John Ramsden finished 48th out of the 122 two-man teams over the eight-day competition. “It was a grueling and fantastic event.” Being a professional Richmond: Dec 3/10

Obituaries
GILMORE, Donald (Don) Carson February 21, 1931 – November 24, 2010. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Don Gilmore on November 24, 2010 at the Richmond Hospital, BC at the age of 79. He was predeceased by his parents Cap and Ethel and his brothers Ralph and Bob. He will be missed by his sister Shirley; sister-in-laws, Barbara and Ila (Fred); nephews Bobby, Wayne, Andrew (Dee), Wes (Donna), Scott and Jason (Colleen); nieces Gail (Albert), Linda (Ed) and Colleen (Reno); many great nieces and nephews and friends. Don was a life long resident of Richmond where he spent most of his life farming, along with his brothers, on the family farm where they grew potatoes and raised dairy cows. He served as a Director on the BC Vegetable Co-op and enjoyed hunting in his spare time. Special thanks to Gail for her dedication to Don for the last 11 years of his life and to Dr. J. Vortel and all the other doctors and nurses at Richmond Hospital for their excellent care and compassion. Thanks to the staff and residents at Gilmore Gardens where he enjoyed living in the latter part of his life. A celebration of Don’s life will be held at Mayfair Lakes Golf Course, 5460 No. 7 Road, Richmond, BC on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Richmond Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

CUMMINS, Rosamond (Rossi) Elizabeth nee Fulljames Born in Vancouver, February 1, 1923 to Pheobe and Bert Fulljames, Rossi passed away peacefully in Langley on November 29, 2010 at the age of 87. Predeceased by her loving husband John Thomas Cummins in 1985 and by her brothers Bert, Jack and Alan Fulljames. Survived by her four children, John (Carolyn), Rossi, Bert (Lana) and Ken (Marleen), four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters Phoebe (John), Beverley (Frank) and her brother Sydney Fulljames as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends. Mom loved her family, garden, crafts, reading and entertaining. She was always happiest when cooking, canning, baking and providing for her extended family.
