Inn From Cold ready to roll Homeless shelter prepares as temperatures drop BY ALAN CAMPBELL

With the first blast of winter set to hit Richmond this weekend, a small army of volunteers is bracing itself to help the city’s homeless survive through the night. St. Alban’s Church’s extreme weather shelter — now called Inn from the Cold — has been busy recruiting from the community to prepare for another season of long, cold and wet nights. And with snow forecasted for Friday and Saturday and temperatures set to plummet to -3 C on Sunday, Inn from the Cold’s team of more than 50 trained volunteers is ready to kick into action. Should the City of Richmond sound an extreme weather alert (-2 C or colder or a combination of low temperatures and wet weather), the team will be called in to help the shelter provide emergency beds to Richmond’s homeless population at the church’s hall on St. Alban’s Road. The alert was issued for 23 nights last winter, but the shelter could be open for more nights this season, with forecasters predicting one of — Larry the harshest winters in decades. “We’re putting the wheels in motion. We’ll make a decision for sure on Friday morning at 10 a.m.,” said Inn from the Cold’s Larry McIntyre. McIntyre said that with snow forecast, however, it’s almost certain that the shelter will open its doors for the first time. “With our variable winter weather, you never know when an alert will be issued, so our team has to be trained and ready to go at a moment’s notice,” said St. Alban’s extreme weather committee co-chair Victor Farmer. “Our food committee has been preparing and freezing food, the bedding is laundered and the furnace repaired. “Volunteers and staff are lined up and we hosted a comprehensive training pro-

gram for our entire team last Saturday.” The News highlighted earlier in the fall the need for people to come forward and help St. Alban’s extreme weather shelter. St. Alban’s provides the facility, BC Housing partially funds the shelter operational costs, but the rest is dependent on donations to make up the balance of the costs. Donations of food, warm weather clothing and basic hygiene products are always welcome at the shelter. Meanwhile, the City of Richmond’s preparations for this weekend’s cold snap are in place. The roads department has been in frequent contact with its own weather advisor, who is forecasting a 55 per cent chance of snowfall on Friday and Saturday. “We plan to get some salt on the ground first to deal with the predicted frost,” said the city’s roads manager Ben Dias. “If there’s any snow, we’ve been told it won’t be more than two centimetres. But we can have our (snow plows) out there within the hour if needed.” see related story page 4

Chris Offer remembers being five years old and playing in the cul de sac in front of his family’s house when a neighbour started screaming for him and his brother to get off the street. He remembers the Red and White Grocery Store at Brighouse leaving bags of groceries at the end of the driveway in front of his house. He remembers health officials posting a sign on the door of his family home stating the house was under quarantine. Such is the life of a brother of a polio victim. Offer’s 14-year-old sister had the infectious disease and the community was in panic. “It was almost like AIDS 20 years ago. People didn’t know how you could catch it.” Offer’s sister was probably past the contagious stage by the time the family was being treated like pariah. But common sense never seems to reign at the height of a deadly epidemic. Forty years later when Offer, then a cop with the Vancouver Police Department, joined the Rotary, it seemed fitting that he would play his part in the Rotary’s eradication of polio campaign. “In 1985, we naively thought we could eradicate polio,” Offer said at a press conference Wednesday at Richmond City Hall organized by the Sunset Rotary Club aimed at raising money for the campaign. The goal seemed reasonable at

He was at Richmond City Hall Wednesday to support the Sunset Rotary Club’s fundraising campaign. the time, he explained, considering a vaccine was available and the disease had already been eradicated from most of North America. What they didn’t account for was the near impenetrable barriers of poverty and politics. The Congo remains one of the four countries where polio has a grip, Offer explained. “Because of their civil war, we couldn’t get in there to vaccinate. So now you see a lot of adolescents and young adults, who should have been immunized as children, being hit by the disease.” The other foe, of course, is poverty.

A child may receive the oral vaccine but if he or she is drinking polluted water, it scoots right through them. The vaccine can be administered intravenously, but that’s a more expensive procedure and can’t be done by volunteers. But despite the challenges, huge progress has been made in the eradication of the disease, said Mayor Malcolm Brodie, also speaking at the press conference. “In 1988, 350,000 people contracted polio world wide — that’s just less than a thousand people a day.” In 2008, 2,000 people contracted the disease.

“We are so close, it’s time to put this matter to rest and finally eradicate polio from the face of the earth,” said Brodie while volunteers behind him decorated trees. As part of its fundraiser, Richmond’s Sunset Rotary is sponsoring Winter Wonderland which involves the elaborate decorating of 30 trees around city hall. Each tree is sponsored to the tune of $1,500. All the trees now have a sponsor, however, the club is still hoping people will make donations in support of the cause. Rotary International is working to raise another $200 million by 2012 to match the $355 million challenge grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Let 2011 be the year that the last child dies of polio, said Offer. This is the 10th year the Sunset Rotary has sponsored Winter Wonderland, which will kick off on Saturday, Nov. 27 at noon followed by the first in a series of community Christmas concerts in the Galleria of Richmond City Hall at 1 p.m. Four more weekend matinee concerts are scheduled at the Galleria beginning at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 4, 11 and 18, with various local community groups performing. While the concerts are free of charge, attendees are encouraged to make a donation to the Richmond Food Bank or to the Rotary to support its various causes.

The City of Richmond is asking for more than $1 million from TransLink as part of the transit authority’s cost-sharing program. Around $1.09 million is being

requested from TransLink to go toward $7.6 million worth of transit-related projects scheduled for 2011. Among them are: ❚ Westminster Highway widening from Nelson Road to McMillan Way; ❚ Westminster Highway pedes-

trian and bicycle improvements (Gilley to Boundary roads); ❚ Installation of audible crosswalks and bus stop upgrades. Two major improvements to the city’s cycling network are also planned as part of the costsharing program. The Crabapple Ridge Bikeway

is one of the new routes being proposed, which would stretch from Steveston, travelling close to No. 1 Road, all the way up to Terra Nova. Another cycle improvement on the table is the widening of No. 6 Road from Wireless Way to Highway 91.

Former pastor finds bridge to ‘normality’ too wide Good Samaritan assists others after trying to help homeless Albert Taylor

A year ago today, we first brought News readers the tale of a Good Samaritan trying to rebuild the shattered pieces of a homeless, drug-addicted former pastor’s life. Businessman Ma’oz Bouskila took Albert Taylor under his wing and had struck up the unlikeliest of friendships in a bid to steer a path out of Taylor’s sad life of scrounging around trash cans and living rough on the dark, damp backstreets of Richmond. But it seems Bouskila’s valiant efforts — which included setting up Taylor in a trailer and arranging an emotional reunion with his long, lost children via webcam on Christmas Day — have all been in vain. Taylor is no longer living in the trailer he was staying in rent-free and has been off the radar since August. “In the summer he was bringing people to his trailer and it was causing all kinds of problems because these friends were drug addicts and thieves,” said real estate investor Bouskila on Wednesday. “There were a few incidents with expensive things getting stolen from boats and trailers nearby and the police were getting called due to fights at 3 a.m. “My friend that allowed him to stay in the trailer there said that he couldn’t have this happening anymore.” Bouskila said he saw Taylor — a recovering heroin addict who used to be a pastor in Richmond — two or three more times in August. “It was obvious he was back on the

I helped him out, but he’s not been back since. “He was driving this old van and had been going around collecting metal to sell on.” When the News caught up with Bouskila back in March, he admitted that it was tougher than he thought it would be to help Taylor rediscover a life that he’d long forgotten or

perhaps tried to forget. Bouskila managed to get Taylor off the street and into a mobile home, away from many of the negative influences that surrounded him when he was homeless. And he had been determined to help Taylor get his life back with his children and his mom, none of whom he has seen for years and who moved back to his native U.S. with a relative when the kids were young. But despite Bouskila’s and the local authorities’ best efforts, Taylor continued to dabble in heroin and persisted in hanging around the so-called bad influences that continued to hold him back. Indeed, he could frequently be spotted along No. 3 Road on his bike, raking through the trashcans for returnables. Bouskila said he knew the writing was on the wall for him and Taylor in the summer when the former pastor told him that he couldn’t pretend any longer that he was trying to mend his ways. “He said he couldn’t lie to me anymore and he told me that I was trying to get him to do things he couldn’t do,” Bouskila said. “But I kept in touch with his kids and I’ve been leaving messages with them in the States in the hope Albert contacts me. “I tried to reunite him with his family. But it just never worked out. Either Albert would

back out of it or the family would make excuses. “I think Albert is still ashamed and feels like he’s disappointed everyone.” Bouskila said he told a month ago that Taylor was living in a duplex that was scheduled for demolition. “I thought I could change him, but maybe I was being a little naïve,” he admitted. But the cloud that is Albert Taylor’s life does have a silver lining. “The clinic that I used to work with when I was helping Albert referred me a few months ago to some people that were clean from drugs,” Bouskila said. “I’ve given this one person a chance and, with the help of some contacts, he’s now running a store. “He had been sending out resumes everywhere and no one would give him a chance. “So it’s not all been a waste of time and these people just need someone to help them out.” Such people, said Bouskila, are ready for the big change and take the chance given to them. “I don’t think Albert was and I’m not sure if he ever will be,’ he said. “Changing Albert was almost impossible and I’m not sure he even wants to make a change.”

It will pay off to recycle with new tipping bylaw

Municipalities and garbage disposal companies will have a bigger “carrot” or financial incentive next year to separate yard trimmings from the garbage taken to waste transfer stations. Metro Vancouver’s board of directors has approved a 2011 tipping fee bylaw that implements a small fee increase for “green” waste like yard trimmings and a larger fee increase for garbage. On Jan. 1, 2011, the tipping fee for garbage will be $97 per tonne. The current fee for garbage is $82 per tonne. The 2011 tipping fee for green waste — organic materials such as grass clippings and tree branches — will be $63 per tonne. The current fee for the green waste that haulers and residents take to transfer stations is $59 per tonne. Clean, untreated wood waste will be also accepted at the green waste tipping fee of $63 per tonne, because it can also be composted or used as resource. In other words, next year there will be a $34 per tonne difference between the tipping fee for garbage and the tipping fee for green waste and clean wood waste. Food scraps and yard trimmings account for about 40 per cent of the waste in residential garbage. As these

organic materials degrade in a landfill, they generate a powerful greenhouse gas that hastens global warming. That greenhouse gas is methane, which traps about 20 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Seven municipalities in the region, including Richmond, now encourage residents in single-family neighbourhoods to add food scraps to yard waste carts or other containers put out at the curb. By the end of 2011, most municipalities in the region are expected to have food scrap collection programs. Next year, to encourage garbage haulers and residents to re-use or recycle used mattresses, a new $20 fee will apply to mattresses taken to waste transfer stations. If more than four mattresses require disposal, they must be taken to the Vancouver Landfill in Delta, where there is an additional charge for deep burial. A number of charitable organizations accept clean mattresses, at no cost to the donor. For a fee, some private firms will recycle the material in mattresses and box springs. The family of an elderly Richmond man who died in his apartment is wondering why it took six weeks for his body to be discovered. Jeff Dickins, 72, was found dead in his apartment at Blair House (10100 No. 3 Rd.) on Nov. 5. Tony Dickins, his son, learned of his father’s death the next day when RCMP contacted authorities in Washington State, where he has lived for more than 25 years. He and his wife, Kim, are troubled that no one noticed something was wrong after the senior passed away on Sept. 23. “I just think there were signs,” Kim Dickins said. The signs included mail piling up and untouched in a postal box in the apartment building for six weeks and a car that hadn’t been moved for six weeks. As a geriatric nurse, Kim Dickins is all too familiar with the problem of elderly people with health problems living on their own. “That’s why this is really tugging my heart,” she said. Management for the building declined to speak to the News on the record. The BC Coroners office confirmed Dickins died on Sept. 23. The cause of death is not yet know and is still under investigation. Tony Dickins was born in Washington State, but grew up in Richmond and lived

here until the age of 15. His mother is American, having moved to Washington State when Dickins was aged 15. His father stayed in Richmond. Tony Dickins said he called his father about once a month, and knew he had health problems. “He was a pretty private guy,” he said. “That had been an ongoing battle between him and myself. If he was going into the hospital or whatever, he wouldn’t tell me until he was home.” In May, Tony Dickins paid for his father to come join his family for a two-week vacation. He had tried to talk his father into moving in with them or at least getting into assisted living in Richmond, but said his father resisted the idea. “I wanted him to move in with us but he wouldn’t because our medical down here in the States, he didn’t have the right kind of coverage to help him and we didn’t have the money to pay for it out of pocket,” Dickins said. “He had respiratory problems,” said his son. “He had a triple bypass about six or seven years ago and wasn’t in the best of health. My cousin tried to call him, I tried to call him but nobody answered and no one could get to his building because it’s secured.” Tony Dickins said his dad would occasionally go out of town not tell anyone. “I’m not trying to put blame on anybody — I just don’t want it to happen to somebody else,” he said.

for their shares, they had no further involvement with Sungro until they were contacted by commission investigators, who were concerned about the rapid rise in the company’s share price. Suspecting that the seed stock distribution had been rigged, commission enforcement staff issued a cease trade order against the company in July 2009, and began to subpoena the seed shareholders. According to the settlement agreement, all five respondents were summoned to appear at the commission and answer questions under oath. The five respondents admitted that, before attending the interviews, AB and/or CD met with them and gave them a Sungro share certificate and instructed them to tell investigators that they received it earlier in the year. The five respondents told investigators that they had not received any money to pay for the shares. The investigators did not believe them, and in September this year, the commission cited them for lying. A hearing into the matter was to be held Monday, but was averted when all five respondents admitted they had lied and agreed to six-year stock market bans in B.C. That means they can’t trade stock in B.C. Kulbir Uppal and Paul Uppal also agreed to pay the commission $7,500 each to settle the matter, and Jhutty and Bahd each agreed to pay $5,000. Three Richmond men are among a group of five investors who admitted lying to B.C. Securities Commission (BCSC) investigators. BCSC enforcement staff took action amid what is described as a phoney share distribution scam. The five involved were: Amrik Singh Bahd, Kulbir (Kelly) Singh Uppal and Gurpreet Kaur Jhutty, all of Richmond, along with Parvin Kaur Dhudwal of Vancouver and Paul Uppal of Delta. In a settlement agreement with the commission, the five said a person (identified as “AB”) told them that he and certain other individuals (identified as “CD”) were forming a company and “needed some names and signatures to get it started.” That company was Sungro Minerals Inc., a Nevada-registered exploration company based in Surrey. To raise startup capital, Sungro sold seed shares at two cents each to 40 people. The five respondents each bought 118,750 shares in September 2007 and gave AB cheques for $2,375. On the same day, AB returned cheques to each of them for the full amount, plus $50 to $205. Although not mentioned in the settlement document, the extra amount paid to the nominees is usually a bonus for allowing the use of their names. This makes the stock easy to manipulate. The settlement agreement states that, after the five respondents were reimbursed

’Tis season of charity

utting Christmas lights up before Dec. 1 smacks of over-zealous homeowners or retailers trying to squeeze the most they can out of the spending-frenzy season. But when it comes to getting into the spirit of giving, charities can’t start soon enough. Sure enough, we’re seeing the Christmas Fund collecting toys, asking for support and telling people to register if they need help. And now with the temperatures plummeting, St. Alban’s is recruiting and training volunteers while getting the word out to the homeless community that the shelter will soon open. All this charitable bustle begs questions about giving and receiving, why we do it and why we don’t. On page 4, we have a “where are they now story” about two men we profiled exactly a year ago. One man is a successful businessman who wanted to help. The other is a heroin-addict who lives on the street. The businessman (Ma’oz) provided the homeless man (Albert) food, shelter and a chance to reconnect with his family. As deeply grateful as Albert was, a year later, he’s back on the street and back on drugs. So what’s the moral? Don’t bother, they’ll just be down in the gutter before you know it. Or, don’t try, your demons are too powerful. What’s the point of spending time and money if it doesn’t fix the problem? We argue there is a point, but it goes beyond outcomes. It also goes beyond who is the giver and who is the receiver. The point is human connection, it’s about not seeing another as other but as one of our own. A profound thing happens for all involved when strangers give to and receive from each other. This isn’t to say outcomes don’t matter. We would like to know Albert is back on his feet. We would like to know that for many the food bank is just a stop gap measure not a permanent resource. And often that’s true. Many of the volunteers for the Christmas Fund, for example, are former recipients, who now want to give back. But even if they didn’t. Even if an addict remains and addict and life doesn’t change significantly. Everything changes when, as a society, we act as one.

The Editor, There are still good people out there. Last Monday, Nov. 15, I went to IGA Garden City and on my way home, I didn’t notice that my wallet was lost. I called IGA to ask if somebody left a wallet in the store and the staff said, “yes,” there was and I started identifying the content of my wallet to confirm that it was really mine. Thank you lord, it was my wallet. I immediately asked the staff member if she knew who the person was who turned it over as she said it was found in the parking lot. Unfortunately, nobody knows. So, to you, good Samaritan, whomever you are, thank you so much, you saved me going through a lot of hassle having to stop my credit card, my bank cards, all my IDs as well. Because of your good deed, it renewed my perception that there are still honest, trustworthy and good people out there. Premier racers facing odd odds Welcome to Rrrrrace Night in Vick! Torria, ladeees and gennellmen! Post time for the Premier Stakes has not yet been announced, but already we have some manoeuvring at the gate, as the early favourites jostle for position. We’re looking for a long-track winner this evening, ladeees and gennellmen, so there’s still plenty of time to get your bets down. Let’s look at some of the likely contenders. Solicitor General – one of the early favourites from Inner Circle Stables – likes to come in from the right side on the stretch, and has proven in past performances that he can handle a muddy road – and yesss, ladeees and gennellmen, we’re expecting race day to run on a dirty track. Like all the top runners, he’s not officially registered for the race yet, but he’s been out on the warm-up track practically every day since Gordo the Great dropped his crown on a double-tongue to make way for a successor to his title. The recently re-named Solicitor General, who also runs under the monicker of Social Houser, is packing extra weight in this go-round, but he and his handlers have been throwing off some handicaps to better the odds. Like some of the others in the warm-up pens, Solicitor General has been spilling grain from the stable – apparently willing

to top up the feed-bags of those still standing out in the cold – tried and trusted means of developing better Leg support. He’s also put some of the new track conditions on review. Some barn-owners have been complaining that trough restrictions are leaving some of their better-paying horses thirsty at closing time. The review is a nice touch: while some of the heavy bettors want to loosen things back up, most of the moderate wagerers are content as is, and some want to close the taps some more. One thing they all can take safely to the betting windows: results of the review won’t be available until after race day. An ironic touch: Solicitor General, in an earlier incarnation, hung back out of the pack to help his stable-mate Gordo the Great retain his lead after sipping too heavy from that trough. Reviewing the track drinking restrictions is by no means a stall tactic restricted to Solicitor General. A hike in minimum pay for jockeys is also “being considered” by some front runners – despite a caution by To Face Financeer (once one of the top wing-wait-

ers, and now still with an outside chance to enter the Stakes) that he controls the books, and he’s not planning any serious trackgrooming until race day is close… or past. Highways to Health is another of the Inner Circle touted to make a strong finish in the Premier Stakes. The oddsmakers are having trouble putting numbers to this contender. While some have him overpassing his prime, others are still expecting him to bridge some gaps with his unique Gateway Gambit style – a style that favoured his previous open road running, but which may not fair so well from a hospital bed. Announcing himself as a strong contender is New in Education – completing the current trifecta of inner circle favourites. New in Education left the hospital beds (currently occupied by Highways to Health) to ride on Gordo the Great’s flank, before shifting to a new school of thought. But the big money today, ladeees and gennellmen, is still outside the Inner Circle. And so far, that’s a pretty lonely side of the track. The top fillies expected in the running, TeeVee Taylor and Surrey on Top, have both come up lame, as has last winter’s stud, Olympic Furlong. Moooore as we ride clossssser to rrrace day! I know that there are at lease 20-plus people who have been diagnosed through clinical diagnosis right here in my own city. Physicians are afraid to report this diagnosis due to repercussions by the licensing board and are fearful for losing their medical licenses for treating this disease longer than the 30 days the IDSA has stipulated even though there is overwhelming evidence that this disease needs longer treatment and if a person is co-infected, the treatment is required much longer than 30 days. The numbers are staggering. There are so many people who are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with this disease. My phone never stops ringing with people begging for help and the emails I receive asking for support. They all feel completely abandoned by our province. The Editor, Re: “Disease expert’s excuse is ‘hogwash’,” News, Nov. 12. Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing this very important story. The lies and deceit coming out of the BCCDC have got to be challenged. There are so many of us suffering here in B.C. that have had, and continue to have, to go to the United States to get treatment to get our lives back. I have been suffering with this disease for eight years now. Even after positive co-infection tests (done here in B.C.) of erlichiosis (caused by a tick) and bartonella, they still denied my diagnosis and treatment because their Elisa test was negative. My Igenex test indicated several bands specific to the borrelia bacteria as positive. My doctor(s) have either thrown up their hands and said they don’t know or can’t treat or have been honest in saying “yes” I have Lyme disease but can only treat for 30 days. Over two years ago, I was forced to go south of the border if I was going to save my own life. Today I am back working full-time. I am not cured and probably will never be since the government and BCCDC have hid, denied the diagnosis, covered up the extent

One of the significant changes coming in the Canada Pension Plan is the Post Retirement Benefit (“PRB”). Now, if you work, are under 65 and you receive CPP benefits, you must pay the CPP contribution monthly. But starting in 2012, Canadians under 65 who work and receive CPP benefits will have to pay CPP contributions, but those contribution payments will be applied to your new PRB, which will start the year after you start making contribution payments. And if you are over 65, are working, and receiving CPP benefits, you willbe able to continue making CPP contributions, which will be addedto your PRB. I hadn’t been at the oval since prior to the Olympics. I walked around it this past weekend. When I went inside, I walked up a set of stairs to observe the activities and encountered a portable fence assembly, similar to ones they use at the PNE to control livestock. area I had just left. I was informed that “members only” can move beyond this point at the front desk (ie, if someone wanted a better view). I have been to a number of private clubs in the Metro Vancouver area, and, even as a non-member, I have never been restricted access to any of them or their venues, whether it be a gym, ice rink etc.. I really took offence that, as a Richmond citizen, a.k.a. “shareholder” of the Olympic oval, that I couldn’t simply walk around and observe the various activities It appears that the oval is, effectively, being marketed as an exclusive club, to the exclusion of so-called “non members” ie the vast majority of the Richmond public. Further to this, in the grander scale, it appears this $200 million facility (whose very existence is effectively rooted in a two-week international “Olympic” party) is apparently being symbiotically marketed as a glorified local rec centrer to those parties wishing to live in the ever increasing number of hi-density residential developments in close proximity to the oval. Like Groucho Marx said, he wouldn’t want to belong to any club that would have him as a member, but the converse of that classic line apparently applies to most of Richmond “non-member” citizens should they wish to go to the oval. My conclusion? It’s going to take far more than peanuts to feed this looming “white elephant,” a.k.a. Olympic oval. R.A Hoegler Richmond

I was lucky to arrive when Ted Fazio turned up with two adult boxers, and a little pug named Bentley. Fazio had heard about the charity photo shoot through a co-worker and brought his boxer, Raffi, and Raffi’s two friends Cal and Bentley. In their staging area, Raffi, Cal and Bentley’s made good use of the Studio 2 to play ball and tug-of-war before their big moment in front of the camera. All three dogs were well behaved but were surprised to find three more dogs in studio mirror that looked just like them! When it came time for their photo shoot, Thiessen had each dog eating out of her hand, and her expert imitation of kitten meows ensured that Raffi, Cal and Bentley were all intently looking at the camera in every shot. However, the fun for the dogs happened between shots when the dogs got lots of treats and Raffi kept going for the football that he brought with him into the studio. Thiessen, who grew up in Richmond, is no stranger to charity photo shoots. She and Riley held a previous pet photo shoot this summer to benefit Richmond Animal Protection Society, and Thiessen has performed

shoots for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and Peace Arch Hospital. Thiessen says she particularly enjoys photographing larger dogs that people stereotypically fear. Her experience training her own doberman has given her the skills to work with especially sensitive dogs like pit bulls, boxers and mastiffs. Riley and her team will be arranging a calendar of some of the day’s best shoots. You can purchase the calendars at Urban Dance later this winter and, again, proceeds goes to the animals. Richmond’s Urban Dance Company studio is no stranger to the pitterpatter of little feet. This locally owned and operated dance studio offers Richmond dancers of all ages classes in ballet, tap, jazz and hip-hop. But on Remembrance Day, the studio was closed to four-year-old ballerinas, and open to canine and feline feet for a pet photo shoot! Rabbits, birds and children were also welcome. Urban Dance Co. owner Wendy Riley shares her love of dance with a love of animals, and she is always looking for ways to raise money for less fortunate animals. So she teamed up with professional photographer, Adrienne Thiessen of Gemini Visuals Creative Photography, and staged a pet and family photo shoot in the halls of the Urban Dance. Riley arranged to have all the proceeds go to the Richmond Animal Protection Society. As families and pet owners came in and out of the studio, Riley was busy finding places for each dog and family to prep themselves for the photo shoot. Meanwhile, Candi Raphael, the photographer’s assistant, was herding groups of animals in and out of the upstairs dance studio between shoots. There was no doubt that Riley, Thiessen and Raphael were out numbered by happy, go-lucky Labradors, boxers and pugs, but these women kept the Urban Dance studio running with the same organization as if it were any other day.

Three charged after following, robbing River Rock patrons Three men have been charged with multiple offences after allegedly trailing patrons from Richmond’s River Rock Casino to their Vancouver home to rob them using replica guns. Dynamic BMW 5 Series sedan means business

It delivers greater power and performance — and does it on less fuel Special to the News

The sixth generation of BMW’s 5 Series sports sedan is an iconic model that represents everything about BMW. In addition to more power, more features and new performance enhancements, the redesigned 5 Series also offers better fuel economy. While the 5 Series is a sedan in which a driver can chauffeur up to four passengers in opulent surroundings, its engineering emphasis is squarely on driver involvement and driving dynamics. It’s also generally the first mid-sized premium sports sedan listed in market segment comparisons. Even though the primary emphasis is on performance that the 5 Series certainly delivers, BMW has also taken a number of steps to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. For example, one of our test cars — the 550i — came with a smaller displacement V8 engine that provided more power yet used less fuel than the previous generation 550i. Interesting new energyconserving technologies include a Brake Energy Regeneration system.

Braking energy is converted into electrical energy to charge the battery. When the battery is fully charged, the alternator is disengaged from the engine and this saves fuel, reduces emissions and increases power available. A new eight-speed (Steptronic) automatic transmission has two overdrive gears that significantly help reduce highway fuel consumption. A side benefit of the extra gears is that they also provide softer shifts, a wider selection of gear ratios and reduced engine noise. Steering feel and precision is a precious and much loved characteristic of every BMW and while the new electromechanical power steering system may send the purists into a state of shock, I assure them this is not something to fear. The energy saving advantage is that it’s only active when you need it, during steering manoeuvres. When stopped or driving on a straight road or if the steering wheel is at a steady angle when cornering, the electric motor is inactive and uses no power -simple and very effective. For now, the 2011 model year 5 Series line only comes in 528i ($53,900), 535i ($62,300) and 550i

While manual transmissions are still loved by driving enthusiasts, they are rare in this class of car. The modern automatic has become much more user friendly and efficient. The top-line 550i delivers true high performance with BMW’s “reverse-flow” V8 engine that features twin turbochargers and direct injection — it has a maximum output of 400 horsepower. It was first used in the 2010 Grand Turismo edition. Personally, I like the 535i in terms of over value — it still provides great performance at much more reasonable price.

The looks

The overall shape hasn’t changed dramatically but there are more lines and curves to the new body that add interest to its styling. These include a strong side character line that cleverly blends in with the door handles. It’s a nicely balanced silhouette that’s in sync with the near-perfect front-torear weight distribution of the 5 Series in all engine versions. Lightweight materials are used to balance the vehicle and lower its overall weight. Components such as doors, hood, front fenders, and suspension assemblies are all made of aluminum. On the front, an upright classic BMW kidney grille appears to lean slightly forward. Our test car came with active Xenon headlights and the daytime running lights incorporate what BMW calls its LED “corona” rings. The turn signals are made up of ten LED light units.

The inside

It’s a warm and inviting interior with a cockpit style dash that’s inclined toward the driver, as is the centre console. Both front seats come with 10-way power adjustments including headrestraint height. The steering wheel also has power tilt and telescopic adjustment and tilt-away for exit and entry feature. The new 5 Series comes with BMW’s fourth-generation iDrive system. The all-in-one rotary controller has been criticized by many of my compatriots as being

too complex with a steep learning curve, but this version seems to be more userfriendly. The 5 series is available with the widescreen (1280 x 480-pixel) version of the navigation system. Easy to view in daylight, it has what BMW calls a trans-reflective display; light from the sun actually enhances the images on the screen. There’s an extra 13 millimetres of knee room for the rear passengers. A folding 60/40 split rear seatback folds down to enlarge a

520-litre capacity trunk. The optional Rear DVD Entertainment System came with two 23 cm individual monitors and two wireless infrared headphones and is operated via a separate iDrive controller. This also gives the rear passengers access to the navigation system and all the iDrive functions -but there is an override up front (if this privilege is abused).

Christmas Fund renews ‘belief in mankind’ BY MICHELLE HOPKINS

Like most boys, Michael, seven, and big brother Nathan, 12, are hooked on the Wii. “That’s pretty much 99 per cent of what I want for Christmas,” said Nathan. “Yeah, me too,” piped in Michael, with his adorable toothless grin. And like most parents, mom Lisa Yensen, would love nothing more than to give her sons everything they want this Christmas. However, 31-year-old Yensen is a single mom on disability. “There’s hardly enough money to pay the rent, buy them clothes and pay for food,” said Yensen, who has lived in Richmond her whole life. “Christmas is always a struggle, there’s just not enough money.” Her descent into poverty began in her teens. She dropped out of Cambie secondary at 16, married at 18, was pregnant at 19 and divorced at 21. With no formal education, fewer workplace skills, a small child and no child support from her husband, Yensen has had to struggle to make ends meet. The situation is even more difficult given that Yensen was diagnosed a few years ago with bipolar disorder and fibromyalgia. (a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain in your muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as fatigue and multiple tender points.) Christmas is always a tough time. However, since Yensen was referred to the Richmond Christmas Fund five years ago, the holidays have been much brighter. “It’s amazing, just amazing,” said Yensen. “The first time we registered with the Christmas Fund, the Richmond Hovercraft crew sponsored us. “It was unbelievable … they brought over so much food, lots of wrapped presents for the boys and a gift certificate for me.” It didn’t stop there. The crew took the family on a boat tour. “The Christmas Bureau renews your belief in mankind,” said Yensen. “To know that more fortunate people in the community go out of their way to provide gifts and food for those less fortunate is beyond words … I can’t say thank you enough for what it means to my sons.” Richmond Christmas Bureau long-

It is common sense that a healthy, balanced diet is good for overall skin health, but there is a lack of scientific evidence to show that certain foods specifically prevent wrinkles, acne or other skin problems. It is more likely that in our busy lives surrounded by fast food, caffeine and sugary treats, we lack the basic vitamins and minerals that help to protect our skin cells. Here are the top foods for healthy skin: 1. Berries, broccoli and beans: To keep your skin healthy, you should load up on these antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants can protect your skin from the inside out, by neutralizing damaging free radicals, which harm your skin cells and are believed to contribute to wrinkling and sagging. Though they are naturally good for you, taking antioxidant supplements can be harmful. A balanced diet is all you need

to fulfil your body’s quota for antioxidants. 2. Salmon, sardines and flax seeds: Rich in omega-3, the essential fatty acid, which is believed to help skin retain moisture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. 3. Carrots, kale and spinach: These vitamin A rich foods help repair damaged skin cells and resists the bacterial growth that leads to acne. 4. Citrus fruits, tomatoes and peppers: Packed with vitamin C, these foods can help prevent some DNA damage from the sun, which leads to early signs of aging. 5. Almonds, avocados and soybean oil: These “good fats” are rich in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant believed to help keep skin firm. 6. Brazil nuts, tuna and garlic: Rich in the trace mineral selenium, these foods also have antioxidant properties. One skin condition to be aware of: Eczema in babies and children may be linked to certain food sensitivities. Some cases of eczema may improve by avoiding foods to which there is a known sensitivity. Common foods that can cause problems include milk products, nuts and shellfish, but a doctor or naturopath can pinpoint your child’s specific food sensitivities. Once the problem foods have been identified, it is important to see a registered dietitian to ensure your child is still getting all their nutrients from a balanced diet.

Vernon’s new golf course simply rocks

With a striking setting and brilliant layout the Ridge Course is a great getaway spot for golfers at any level BY A NDREW P ENNER Postmedia News

There’s something about blasting a golf ball into the wild blue yonder — from an elevated tee with scads of lush-green fairway way down below — that just never gets old. Ask any golfer: elevated tees are awesome. So, not surprisingly, by the seventh hole at Predator Ridge’s spectacular new Ridge Course — after playing from at least four lofty perches — I was absolutely giddy. Granted, not all my aerie offerings found the fairway (or maybe the planet?), but this much I knew: The Ridge rocks. Opened on Aug. 1, The Ridge Course at Predator Ridge Resort (located 10 minutes south of Vernon, B.C.) was designed by talented Canadian architect Doug Carrick. His existing Canadian designs — which include Greywolf, Angus Glen, Osprey Valley, Humber Valley and a handful of other notables — are all first-rate.

Typically, his courses are wide, impeccably shaped and, perhaps above all else, ultra-fun to play. Not surprisingly, especially given the dramatic rock-peppered terrain where The Ridge is situated, there were high hopes for the course. And, rest assured, it doesn’t disappoint. The brilliant layout will undoubtedly exceed the expectations of the vast majority of first-timers. Unlike many new courses built in the past 15 years or so, The Ridge truly is playable (and scoreable) for the average recreational golfer. The playing corridors are comfortably wide, the greens are large and relatively flat with only subtle slopes, and the bunkering, while beautiful (the bunkers are shaped like maple leaves or bear claws), is not overly punishing. In addition, numerous fairways have a funnel-like effect where the ball wants to bounce back into play. And, perhaps the best part, Carrick freely used the many

rock outcroppings and high points for stirring vistas and tee shots but, rather expertly, minimalized tough, up-the-hill holes that golfers just don’t find enjoyable. This is not to say that low-handicap players and pros will tear this course apart. It does stretch to 7,123 yards from the tips and comes in with a 73.8 rating (133 slope). That may be low compared to many “championship” layouts, but it’s still plenty of course for the macho types to flex their muscle. Certainly, most of the play will be from the white markers, where the course measures 6,208 yards and rates 69.2 (127 slope). Not surprisingly, with so many strong holes with a significant “wow” factor, I found it hard to pick a favourite. The par-3 fifth, which begins a stretch of nine brand new holes (the remaining eight are redesigns from the former Peregrine Course) will definitely get plenty of votes. However, the following hole,

a dramatic par-4 that plummets towards the lake and features an eye-popping wall of rock that flanks the right side, gets my nod. One of my playing partners for the day, local country singer Lee Dinwoodie, had never hit a 300-yard drive in his life. But on this hole, after hoisting up a high one with a little heat behind it, he was tickled pink to get to his ball and realize he’d just hit his first official “bomb.” “Definitely, one of the goals we had with The Ridge Course was to make sure the recreational golfer could have some fun out there, be adequately challenged, but still walk away with a decent score,” said Carrick. “Taking advantage of the site’s natural beauty, including the rock outcroppings and the fantastic views of Okanagan Lake, was crucial for the project to be a success. enjoying the course.” Of course, like most golfers who visit the Predator Ridge Resort, I wasn’t just enjoying the golf. The Cougars had scored three unanswered goals to take the lead, including the go ahead tally with just three minutes left. Dan Tait added a pair of goals for the Blues, while Troy Kaczynski and Mark Pearlman, shorthanded, also scored. The Blues would only have five hours of rest before they would travel across town to Rutland to play their longtime rivals —the Semiahmoo Ravens — the only team to beat them twice this season. The Ravens, coached by former Richmond resident and current StevestonLondon principal Jim Allison, erased a 2-0 deficit with three unanswered goals in the second period. after one period. Tony Yang would get Richmond on the board and Tait notched a huge shorthanded goal to give his team momentum heading into the final period. The third belonged to the Blues as Tait jumped on a stretch pass to score another shorthanded marker and finish the game with a hat trick to collect MVP honours. The championship game would put the locals up against the Calgary Royals. The only thing the Blues

knew about their opponent was they were facing a much bigger team. The opening minutes were a feeling out process as neither team wanted to give up the first goal. Richmond would eventually open the scoring in the late stages as Kaczynski masterfully stick handled around the Calgary defense and put a wrist shot to the top corner. Pearlman would add another before the first period intermission.

The Blues took full control in the second as Chiang and Tait each scored twice and Matthew Yonin-Eldridge also founded the net in a relatively easy 7-2 win. The Blues traveled home Sunday evening and had no rest with the the Surrey AAA Thunder waiting for them. It was evident that the Blues were banged up with many players playing hurt in the Kelowna Tournament. Having to play their sixth game in just four nights was just too much for the boys. They quickly fell behind 1-0 against a rested opponent that was pumped to play the number one ranked team. Surrey would score two more goals in the second and go on to post a 4-2 win. The next tournament for the Blues will be the prestigious 30th Annual Richmond International which gets underway Dec. 26 with more then 60 teams competing. The Richmond Blues Midget A1 hockey team is finding out just that but still skated to top honours at the highly-regarded Kelowna Tier One Tournament.
