FIRE

Victims told not to touch cash, valuables Fire department cites health and safety concerns BY NELSON BENNETT

nbennett@richmond-news.com

CHUNG CHOW/RICHMOND NEWS

Splish, splash ... A makeshift waterslide at Thompson Community Centre’s summer camp is just the ticket for a soapy Josh, aged 6.

Victims of Saturday’s fatal apartment fire are accusing Richmond Fire-Rescue of preventing them from retrieving their valuables, like cash and jewelry. Elena Vinarskaia is one of 93 tenants left homeless since Saturday’s fire at Heather Lee Apartments on Westminster Highway. The fire department says there are public safety concerns with respect to the building’s structure and has been escorting tenants back into the apartments for brief visits to retrieve things like identification and medication. Three days after the fire, Vinarskaia said she was suited up in a firefighter’s uniform and ushered

into her apartment by a Richmond fire inspector. While the carpets were blackened with smoke, she said everything else in the apartment appeared untouched, and her budgie was still alive. “Nothing is burned,” she said. “The clothes are completely clean.” But when she tried to retrieve some clothes from her closet and $400 in cash that her daughter got for her birthday, she was told she couldn’t take any cash or valuables. With no tenant’s insurance, Vinarskaia needs all the cash she can lay her hands on. “It’s my cash!” she said. “It made me mad. It’s extremely strange.” Vinarskaia was allowed to take her passport, her income tax papers, some photos, her bird and two old laptops, but nothing else. She said see City page 4

FISHERIES

Veteran fisherman claims native rival is out of control Gus Jacobson has been a commercial fisherman for more than 50 years and lives on the water at Finn Slough. When he isn’t fishing (which is more often than not, in recent years) he works on the docks in Steveston. He has recently observed — and reported — what he believes is a native fishery that is out of control. He is concerned about what he feels is a lack of monitoring of the native food fishery, poor hygiene standards on native fishing vessels, and the apparent participation in the local native fishery by American citizens. “Our government has made a monster by making discrimination,” Jacobson said. crimination part, but say it was First Nations that were kept out of the fishery for years, and are now insisting on exercising traditional rights to fish for food and to make a living. “If you go back 50 years, Indians weren’t even allowed to fish,” said Wayne Sparrow, a commercial fisherman and member of the Musqueam First Nation. It was a Musqueam band member who went to court and won a landmark ruling in 1992 that upheld the right of Coastal First Nations to fish for food, social and ceremonial (FSC) purposes. On July 30 and 31, Jacobson said there appeared to be no monitoring of the FSC fishery by the Musqueam and Tsawwassen First Nation. And on July 31, he said it

appeared an American citizen had been fishing during that native only fishery. He said he was called out to open a gate late at night, after a native food fishery was over, to let out a fisherman pulling his boat out. He said the boat — which had a fishing net in it — was being towed out by someone driving a truck and trailer with Washington state plates. “I just don’t know why in the hell we’ve got American people on our side,” he said. Barry Rosenberger, area director for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and Ernie Crey, fisheries advisor for the Sto:lo First Nation, offer possible explanations. Mud Girls teach earth-friendly cooking BY RYAN INGRAM Special to the News

et ready to chow down on a delicious slice of pizza, freshly baked from the oven. There’s only one catch: before you can eat it, the entire oven has to be built from scratch. The Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project is putting on a three-day workshop, from August 13-15, demonstrating environmental-friendly and sustainable building practices. As part of the hands-on tutorial, a permanent cob oven will be built at the Sharing Farm in Terra Nova Gardens. “We’re thrilled to be building an oven in the farm’s healing garden, which will add to the garden’s original concept as a gathering place for feasts and potlucks,” said Mary Gazetas of the Sharing Farm. The Sharing Farm’s cob stove will be wide enough for two oven pans — perfect for baking fresh bread and pizza for volunteers and participants of workshops at the farm. Cob is an ancient building material created by mixing natural materials, like clay, sand and straw. To build the stove, the Sharing Farm has enlisted help from a “natural building collective” called the Mud Girls, who hail from Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. The Mud Girls use entirely natural elements to build houses and stoves, and show others how to do to the same, as part of their sustainable living movement. Their goal is to “inspire people to think about ancient or new and creative ways to change how

we live.” “Building a cob oven is definitely a hands-on, participatory event,” said Kimi Hendess, who will be overseeing the project. “Cob can be mixed with either hands or feet so participants will certainly get to ‘feel’ how easy it is to build with cob. Everyone should be ready to get dirty.” The Mud Girls recently completed building an oven for the Earthwise Society in Delta, and Arzeena Hamir, a board member on the Richmond Fruit Tree Project, is excited to bring the all-natural, lo-tech oven to Richmond’s charitable farm, accomplishing a unique environmental feat for the community. “Almost all of the ingredients that we’re using to build the oven were found in Richmond. So we have clay that’s coming off the farm. We have sand that was dredged from the river, that the City’s donating to us. “Straw came from a local farmer. And then we have a little bit of manure that’s going into the mix as well, and that came from Councillor Harold Steves’ farm,” explained Hamir. Even the bricks that will be used for the base of the oven were salvaged locally. “And all of the actual building will done by hand, so it’s very much a community-based project. It’s definitely built by Richmond, from Richmond,” added Hamir. The workshop begins today (Friday) and is open to everyone in Richmond, 18 and up. It costs $20 a day or $50 for the whole weekend. Registration is limited to 12 spots.

DFO: First Nations fishery is monitored City: Safety issues Continued from page 1 rights to fish for Fraser River sockeye. But Crey doubts an American would actually be fishing in the Fraser River. “It could be that one of those boats have come across the border and is fishing the U.S. side of the border (near Point Roberts) but they may be docked at Steveston,” Crey said. “But they’d have to go fish on the U.S. side.” Rosenberger said its up to local First Nations to decide who gets to fish during their FSC fishery, and that might include American relatives. During the July 30 and 31 native food fishery, Jacobson said there appeared to be no monitoring going on. He reported his concerns to both DFO and Conservative MP John Cummins, who issued a press release slamming DFO for failure to monitor the fishery. “Nobody knew how many fish left the grounds. The amount of fish that was caught was not monitored,” Jacobsen said. Not true, Rosenberger said: “We do have catch information.” Just because Jacobson may not have seen any DFO monitors on the dock doesn’t mean the fishery was not monitored, Sparrow said. The monitoring is done by both DFO and aboriginal fishery officers, he said, and it is often done on the water, while the fishing is going on. “DFO has hired monitors that ride out on the Musqueam fishery,” Sparrow said. “They come out to every

boat at least three times. In our food fishery the other weekend, one of the DFO managers was on my boat.” “We have a vessel that’s on the water that monitors the First Nation,” Rosenberger said. “There are AFO officers and their guardian programs — they’re on the water monitoring and on the docks — and we have fishery officers on the water and we have the catch monitoring programs that the department operates as well.” Jacobson said there also appears to be a double-standard when it comes to hygiene standards on fishing vessels.

“Health standards are nil.” — Gus Jacobson

“Health standards are nil,” he said. He recently witnessed one boat belonging to a native fisherman heavily laden with fish. “There was no ice in it,” he said, adding the boat was tied up for at least 24 hours with no ice in the hold. Commercial fishing boat owners are required to paint all wooden surfaces where fish destined for human consumption is likely come into contact, due to hygiene concerns. “Any wood has to be painted with non-toxic paint or you’re going to get bacteria in open wood. And it attracts

flies,” Jacobson said. He said he has seen first-hand certain fishing boats owned by native fishermen where salmon that might be sold to the public are held in “filthy conditions.” Sparrow said there may be “one or two” boats that fit Jacobson’s description, but said “they can’t paint the whole First Nations community with that brush.” “There are a few of them that don’t look after their fish, but that’s their own stupidity if they don’t want to look after them,” he said. He added any sockeye caught by native fishermen under commercial agreements get sold directly to seafood companies, which insist on health standards being followed. “Ninety-nine per cent of the fish is all sold on the grounds,” he said. “There are three different companies that have contracts to buy the bands’ fish. If there was any concern with quality control, they would tell you.” As of Aug. 6, 270,580 Fraser River sockeye were caught by Canadian and American fishermen, according to the Pacific Salmon Commission. Of that, 91,530 were caught in in-river native FSC fisheries; another 46,950 were caught by Canadian First Nations outside the river, in places like the Johnston Strait. Meanwhile, Area E gillnetters caught roughly 80,000 sockeye in a three-hour opening Tuesday.

Continued from page 1 another tenant let in the same day was told she could not take her wedding ring. Vinarskaia said she was told that the fire department is concerned about carcinogens from the fire in things like clothing. But she wonders why they are being so selective. Vinarskaia said she also convinced a fire inspector to go into her apartment to fetch her daughter’s glasses. The inspector also decided to bring several of the ribbons the girl won in competitive swimming. As long as Vinarskaia washed the items, she was told there should be no concerns, so she can’t figure out why she wasn’t allowed to take cash. “It should be my choice whether I take my stuff or not,” she said. City hall spokesman Ted Townsend, speaking on behalf of Richmond FireRescue, said the escorted visits are intended only to allow tenants to quickly

retrieve the most important things, like medications. “Because of the safety and other issues, that access is extremely limited,” he said. Townsend added that the fire department hoped to have its investigation concluded by the end of the day Thursday, at which point the building would be turned back to the owner, Cressey. “It will be up to the building owner, working with their insurance company, to determine any further future access,” Townsend said. Vinarskaia said that, on top of the problems tenants have been having getting their valuables back, they were told recently that they will not be getting their rent for August back. But Cressey president, Scott Cressey, told the News that he’s not sure what is happening with the rent, and that it may depend on what the insurance company decides. “At the moment, we’re not exactly sure what’s happening,” he said.

Get Ready for Back To School!

Reasons for judgment were released recently in a Wills Variation case called Schipper v. De Lange. Johanna Schipper was the only child of the Schippers. She was very close to her parents, and she excelled academically, although her inability to complete medical school devastated her parents. Johanna established a common law relationship with a gentleman (the evidence suggested her father did not like that, nor the gentleman). The common law couple moved to Hawaii. The parents died in 2008, one day apart. The evidence revealed that Johanna was not really told of the seriousness of her parents’ health condition. Meanwhile, the Schippers had two nephews, with whom they were close, and who looked after them in the last few years. They made Wills days before they died, leaving only 25% of their Estate to Johanna, and 75% to the nephews. The Court seemed to find that Johanna was in fact a devoted daughter and where the parents seemed to feel she was not interested in them, in fact she could not afford to visit them more often, and by their not fully disclosing their health problems Johanna was truly left in the dark. She must have been extremely shocked to learn of her parents' deaths. Johanna was given half of the Estate by the Court.

Family reunited with treasured stolen heirloom Hand-carved kayak returned to owner after finder called the Richmond News

BY RYAN I NGRAM Special to the News

Although it may have looked like a kayak to the bandits that made off with it, for Heather Kerr something extremely close to her heart had been stolen. The kayak was taken from Kerr’s front yard sometime last week, in between Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, after she took it off the top of her car and placed it under the rhododendrons in her front yard. “It was out in the open. But if you don’t lose things, you don’t remember that there are thieves out there,” said Kerr. With her boat stolen, it was more than her semi-regular trips into Steveston harbour that she was missing out on. The kayak represented more then two years that she spent with her father in the final years of his life, where she learned from him how to build the beautiful cedar split ocean kayak. “He died last year and it’s one of the things we did together. And I realized how special it was to me,” said an emotional Kerr. After the theft, Kerr had invaluable help from her daughter, Lori,

who helped get word out on craigslist and through the local papers. Kerr also had her friends in the kayaking community keeping an eye out for her missing prized possession. But days passed with no leads. Kerr was depressed in the aftermath of the theft and it took her three days before she forced herself

“I just had to believe that it was going to be found.” — Heather Kerr

to be positive about the situation. “I just had to believe that it was going to be found, or else I would have been just too devastated for so long,” she said. “So that got me through it.” Harry Treink was driving around the Finn Slough area, when he noticed something strange sticking out at weird angle in a ditch. He pulled over, and discovered a stunning, handcrafted kayak. With no idea of the emotional

story behind it, Treink pulled the kayak out of the ditch and brought it back to his house. Treink’s wife, Liz, took it from there to try and find the owner. She used craigslist — like Kerr’s daughter Lori — but only got a few unsuccessful replies. It wasn’t until Liz talked to Richmond News sales support Kelly Christian, who recalled hearing about a missing kayak, that the two stories were married and the reunion was set in motion. The next day, Kerr got an early morning phone call from her daughter Lori, telling her that the kayak may have been found. Heather Kerr rushed over to Teerink’s house. “I walked up to her house and I could see it on the lawn – like a hundred feet away – and I knew it was mine, ” said Kerr. “It was pretty emotional,” she admitted about the reunion. Neither woman is sure of how the kayak literally ended up ditched, but both are grateful for the happy ending. “I’m just glad it got back to the original owner,” said Liz.

Highway 99 northbound at the Blundell Road overpass was closed for several hours Wednesday after a police officer was hit after pulling over a speeding vehicle. It’s thought the officer was struck after the stationary car he was dealing with in a construction zone was then hit from behind by another vehicle. Moments earlier, the Vancouver Police Department officer had set up a speed enforcement operation on the 99 as part of the Integrated Road Safety Unit. The officer, was “conscious and breathing,” when he was taken away in an ambulance with minor injuries. “He was treated at scene by BCAS and transported to a local area hospital,” RCMP spokesman Sgt. Peter Thiessen said. “The officer attempted to flag over a violator,” Thiessen added in a news release. “A second vehicle came up from behind, striking the violator vehicle causing it to strike the VPD officer.” Police closed off Highway 99 northbound at Steveston Hwy for several hours following the accident. Summer sees house sales cool, prices rise Special to the News

Real estate market activity has cooled down over the summer, but the average price for a house in Richmond is up from last year. In July, there were 286 property sales in Richmond, compared to 630 sales for the same time last year, according to statistics released by the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV). A similar trend hit the entire Greater Vancouver region, with 2,255 residential property sales in July 2010 — a drastic 45.2 per cent decrease from the 4,114 sales in July 2009. Last year was the highest-selling July recorded in the Lower Mainland. Housing prices have slightly declined by 2.8 per cent since April, when the residential benchmark price hit an all-time high of $539,419 in the Greater Vancouver region. Even with the slight drop in the summer months, prices still remain higher when

compared to last year. For a detached home in Richmond, July’s benchmark price was $884,998, up 20.1 per cent from July of last year. The increase in the Richmond housing prices is tied with West Vancouver for the largest in the Lower Mainland. Comparatively, South Delta saw a 11.9 per cent increase, with a $664,753 benchmark for detached homes. The benchmark price for attached residential properties, like townhouses, has gone up 14.4 per cent from last year, and was at $516,026 for July. Apartments’ benchmark price in Richmond has risen 9.1 per cent to $338,347. “With the pace of home sales and listings easing off in our market, we’ve begun to see a leveling of home prices from the record highs seen in the spring, creating greater affordability,” Jake Moldowan, REBGV president said. “Activity in today’s marketplace is clearly trending in favour of buyers.”

Shop hit by plane launches lawsuit BY NELSON BENNETT

nbennett@richmond-news.com

A Richmond automotive repair business that was damaged by a crashing airplane last year is suing the companies that owned and operated the plane. Premier Auto Transmission recently filed a civil suit Aug. 6 against Integra Ops., the plane’s

owner, and Canadian Air Charters, the operator, for the damage the business sustained when a Piper Navajo crashed near the automotive shop at 12520 Vickers Way on July 9, 2009. Two people died in the plane crash. The crash damaged two cars and 275 transmissions. It’s not known how much in damages Premier Auto

Transmissions is seeking. The shop’s owner could not be reached for comment. The cause of the crash is still not known, although air turbulence from the wake of a commercial plane ahead of the smaller plane was considered a possible cause. Bill Yearwood of the Transportation Safety Board says an investigation is still under way.

House cleaning in order

The B.C. Chamber of Commerce and associations representing forestry and mining in B.C. may have thought they were doing Gordon Campbell’s Liberals a favour when they challenged Bill Vander Zalm’s anti-HST petition. With friends like that, who needs enemies. If there was no real appetite to recall Liberal MLAs before, there certainly will be now. Even those of us who did not agree with Vander Zalm’s anti-HST efforts now see that a serious house-cleaning is in order, both in Elections BC and in the Liberal government. Whether you agree with Vander Zalm or not, he managed to get 700,000 voters to sign a petition to scrap the HST. But in a decision that strains credulity, the chief electoral officer for Elections BC decided not act on the petition until the courts have ruled whether the question is legally binding. The argument is that the petition asks the provincial government to revoke a tax it is no longer responsible for, but is now the jurisdiction of Ottawa. That is a legal question that Elections BC should have worked out before it approved the petition. Holding up the petition like this now calls Elections BC’s political independence into question. The decision suggests there is either incompetence or political interference at work here. Whether you agree with the anti-HST campaign is irrelevant. After Vander Zalm’s campaign succeeded in meeting the petition targets, Elections BC should have done what we expect of it — forward the petition to the provincial government for a vote. If the businesses who launched the court action wanted to file an injunction, and if a judge decided to grant it, fine. But it is not for Elections BC to second-guess what the courts may or may not say. This decision adds fuel to a recall campaign, and maybe a little house-cleaning is in order. People who don’t “get” democracy have no business being in government.

CHOICE WORDS

Gays, lesbians deserve respect The Editor, Re: “Racists graffiti insults us all,” Letters, Aug. 4. I agree with Charan Gill that the racist graffiti left on the walls in the Asian strip mall are disturbing. But we must remember that they are silly people. Far more disturbing was the revolting attack on Jay Phillips, who is black, by three white youths. In the same context, the homophobic attacks on gay and lesbians that have occurred in B.C. in the last few years are equally revolting. Even Evangelical Christian MP Alice Wong and the group she supports — the Canadian Alliance for Social Justice and Family Values Association — would be outraged if the ethnicChinese Canadians were denied the right to marry because they were Chinese and yet cannot see her own intolerance in trying to deny gays and lesbians the same rights. As Charan Gill says, “an injury to one community is an injury to us all.” Our Charter of Rights and Freedoms applies to the gay and lesbian community just as much as it does to the rest of us in our own communities. Nature holds amazing secrets

T

wo recent medical articles caught my eye: the first, that bee venom acts like a smart bomb to target cancer cells, and the second, that a secret ingredient in honey kills bacteria. These are two amazing scientific discoveries about bees, a wild insect that is facing serious problems. Worldwide, bees are dying off from a phenomenon known as colony collapse disorder. No one really knows what’s behind CCD, but many theories abound. According to the Honey Council of Canada, 35 per cent of Canada’s honeybees have been lost in the past three years, and possible reasons range from pesticides, to mites, to viruses to weather patterns. In other words, we have no idea. Without bees, flowers will cease to exist, and along with them one-third of our food will disappear. What I’m concerned about is that it may be beyond mankind’s capabilities to save the honeybee from extinction, and if so, not only do we risk losing a huge portion of our food supply, but we also risk losing future amazing scientific discoveries about bees and honey, such as the two mentioned above. Of even more concern is the fact that human

Tracy Sherlock ELEMENTARY, MY DEAR

beings continue their growth in the world with reckless disregard – even arrogance – of how their actions affect the natural world. The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Journal published both bits of research. The article on bee venom says the next time you’re stung by a bee, there is some consolation: a toxic protein in bee venom, when altered, significantly improves the effectiveness of drugs and dyes, such as those already used to treat or diagnose cancer. “This type of transporter agent may help in the design and use of more personalized treatment regimens that can be selectively targeted to tumours and other diseases,” said researcher Samuel Wickline. While the fact that honey fights infection has been around for centuries, it hasn’t been widely recognized by scientists. The recent research not only confirms that honey is an effective antibiotic, but also describes

how the mechanism works. Bees add a protein to honey, which means that it could one day be used to develop new drugs that could combat drug-resistant bacteria. It’s pretty amazing stuff. “We’ve known for millennia that honey can be good for what ails us, but we haven’t known how it works,” said Faseb’s editor Gerald Weissmann. “Now that we’ve extracted a potent antibacterial ingredient from honey, we can make it still more effective and take the sting out of bacterial infections.” The thing is, there’s a lot human beings don’t know about nature. And in order to ensure scientists are able to discover the secret properties of ants, or seaweed, or pine trees, we need to make sure they’re still around. We’ve got to stop destroying nature to satisfy our need to consume. On the plus side, the scientist’s work on honey’s antibiotic properties also sheds light on honey bee immune systems, which may help breeders create healthier and heartier honey bees. So there’s hope for the bees. Let’s make sure there’s hope for all of nature by looking after it. Comments and questions always welcome at tracy.sherlock@gmail. com.

ALICE WONG

Book is tip of evangelical iceberg

The Editor, Re: “Writer has the wrong Wong,” News, Aug. 4 I’ve had the chance to read Marci McDonald’s The Armageddon Factor, an indepth look at the Christian right and how they have managed to hijack a significant amount of power and influence within the Harper Conservatives, while training current and future leaders to retain their hold on power. As an outspoken atheist politician and activist, I’ve also done my fair share of research on the subject. Marci McDonald is an investigative reporter and her book is quite accurate given the volume of research that went into her work. The odd error is bound to crop up, in particular when referencing people

with common names, and it has. I will take our Member of Parliament Alice Wong’s word that she has done no direct fundraising for the CASJAFVA, and I have found no evidence to indicate otherwise. However, a politician’s attendance at such events does indicate tacit support for that organisation, and a means to gain credibility and funds they would otherwise not attain. I also have major concerns about the fundamentalist evangelical wing of Christianity being involved in our government. I believe it to be dangerous for a number of reasons, notably that people of strong faith tend to believe in the improbable while ignoring the probable. They also tend to enforce high levels of secrecy

and controls to hide their actions, as is obvious with the Harper Conservatives. This has major ramifications across the federal decision making spectrum, in particular within our legal system, the military plus education, science and medicine. The negative decisions being made by the Harper Conservatives based on faith versus science are plain to anyone who takes the time to look. The latest census and prisons debacles being just the tip of an iceberg that includes many millions of our federal tax dollars being redirected to private Christian colleges for the first time in memory. Harper’s Sales Tax at work of course. Dale Jackaman Richmond

SOUTH ARM

Some of us old folks do like change

The Editor, After reading many letters to the editor in regards to the improvements being made to South Arm Park, it is important that I make a few points on behalf of some of us who are NOT opposed to these changes. The covered picnic areas will be within the confines of the South Arm Pool area, and, as this area is fenced, it will not be available to “hooligans” as referred to by one reader. Also, a covered area already exists in the gazebo near the picnic area, which seemed to be unknown to that previous writer, also. The artificial turf is NO longer an issue as it was not passed by city council. The area the lit basketball courts were created on was not big enough for any other purpose, and was truly wasted land. If you feel areas lit until 11 p.m. pose problems — then you only have to look towards the tennis and lacrosse courts a few hundred metres away.

They, too, are lit up until 11 p.m. every night and are well used by the public right up until those lights go off. There are many of us who feel South Arm Park is underused — it is a community park and when it is not being used, it is a waste. Many soccer, baseball and school sporting events already occur within its confines, but more are always welcome by those of us who feel the youth and adults alike should be busy and have healthy opportunities to be so. May I suggest that those who live in Burkeville expect airplane activity, that those living near schools to expect children’s noise at recess and lunch time, and those living near parks expect improvements. As one young city worker commented to me, “old people hate change.” Count myself and my friends who live near the park an exception to that rule! Jill Davidson Richmond

Future of our natural park is at stake The Editor, While enjoying a rainyday walk in this beautiful park, I couldn’t help reflecting on how contentious it all has become about the proposed changes. It is dividing people into groups. While not necessarily always a good thing,

sometimes it can’t seem to be avoided. Regarding Diamella Hsiung’s letter, she focuses mainly on her age group. She points out obesity issues that I agree with, as her (younger) generation like none other before (certainly not mine) suffers from a lack of physical activity leading to all kinds of health issues later in life. What I don’t agree with and strongly resent, is Ms. Hsiung’s suggestion that other residents of this community could go elsewhere. Older people or those

CONSCIOUSNESS

It’s simple, live a mindful life When we live life in the moment, anything we need to do or know will be present. Whether KEEP IT you’re washing dishes, cooking, driving your car, visiting with a friend or working, make a conscious decision to be mindful and present with what it is you are doing. You may notice all these extra thoughts that went on in your mind before will disappear when you begin living in the moment. What a relief! Our mind is a very useful tool for helping us to live the practical parts of our life each day, such as driving our car, performing our work, honouring responsibilities, playing sports, running our households etc. But when the mind delivers thoughts geared towards stories about who we are or who others should be with labels attached to grasp our attention, then it’s very useful to recognize these are just thoughts and no action is required. There are of course times when we do have a very relevant fear for our own or another’s safety through a thought and it is our human instinct to respond, but the thoughts I am pointing to here are those created by the mind and we inherently know

Lorraine Wilson

the difference between the two. The more you consciously bring awareness to your SIMPLE thoughts you may begin to notice they will dissipate because you are no longer responding to them. We have been conditioned to believe everything our thoughts tell us about who we are and the truth is we are much bigger than any thought our mind can produce. The more you pay attention to these types of thoughts the more they tend to manifest in your life. Many of us spend wakeful hours because our mind is delivering nonstop thoughts, but when you become the observer of your thoughts they will eventually dissolve, because you are no longer engaging with the thought. Be aware that it does take vigilance to be conscious of not becoming your thoughts. Begin to be mindful about what thoughts arise and if they have nothing to do with the practical part of your life then let them pass by. When you begin to let these stories be present without action, they will come and go just like the moment they arrived.

The more you pay attention to these types of thoughts the more they tend to manifest in your life.

I recall a non duality teacher, Pamela Wilson one day saying that ‘a river doesn’t mind having a fish flow through it’ well it’s the same concept as thoughts passing through your mind, their just thoughts, let them come and let them go, no need to attach yourself to any one thought. Try this and let us know your experience. Begin today to enjoy the freedom that will come when you begin to live your life in the present moment and let go of thoughts running your life. Lorraine Wilson is a Richmond program facilitator and guest speaker who desires to live a conscious life. Check out her website at www.keepinglifesimple.org.

What does it mean to live a mindful life and be conscious of your thoughts? When you set the intention to live a mindful life and take responsibility for who you are life changes. You are no longer depending on anyone or anything to ‘fix’ you or your life situation. We define ourselves and our lives as a result of the thoughts that come and go in our mind. Thoughts about what we think of ourselves and what others may think of us and the truth is none of these thoughts are real, they are simply just thoughts, that’s all. It’s important to realize this because it is the key that sets you free. Who would you be without a thought? Investigate that question a little deeper and see what you discover. The human brain produces approximately 70,000 thoughts on average per day (ref: www. wiki.answers.com) and some thoughts do grab our attention more than others but thoughts are just thoughts, they come and go and there is no need for us to attach ourselves to any one thought. Imagine if we followed every thought we had throughout the day, we’d be exhausted. The first step to living a mindful life is to begin being conscious of the present moment and the thoughts that arise. Become the observer of your thoughts by simply watching the thoughts let them come and let them go and be mindful not to follow the thought.

Toyota’s top cat has some reasons to purr with new makeover

BOB MCHUGH

Special to the News

Yes, Avalon is still around and the top-cat Toyota has been given a styling makeover inside and out, plus a tech up-date for the 2011 model year. It’s also a recently announced Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Pick” award winner. Why buy a Toyota when you could get a Lexus for almost the same money, or not too much more? It’s a very good question and no doubt it’s the reason there were only 280 Avalon buyers in Canada last year. Avalon appeals to buyers who care less about brand names and more about good value. There are also buyers out there who want those finer luxury traits and toys that it provides, but prefer not to flaunt wealth or success by owning a luxury class car. Like every Toyota, this flagship Toyota is extremely well put together, super reliable and historically it has excellent value retention. Avalon also gives Toyota a foothold in the full-sized near-luxury segment where it competes with cars like the new Buick LaCrosse, Ford Taurus, Hyundai Genesis and

Chrysler 300. The 2011 body styling changes include a new grille, bumper fascias, front and rear lighting, chrome rocker panels and folding side mirrors. A radical transformation it is not, as you’d have to be an Avalon aficionado to spot them from a distance. On the inside, however, there are some significant changes. There’s a redesigned dash and centre console, active front seat head restraints, standard USB input, XM satellite radio, Bluetooth phone connectivity, audio input capability, it now has an auto up/down feature on all windows and it comes with an upgraded navigation system. Avalon comes with a 3.5-litre V6 engine that can produce 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque and it’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. While power output falls a tad short of the entry-level Lexus ES 350, which gets 272 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque out of its 3.5-litre V6, the Avalon provides slightly better fuel economy. see Avalon page 18

Avalon: XLS standard features are extra nice neered in North America and it’s built in Kentucky, at a facility where the Camry, Camry Hybrid, and Venza are also assembled.

The Looks

Changes to the front of Avalon include a wider, more substantial grille and new projector-beam headlights. The fog lights are integrated into a new trapezoidal front bumper and they provide a wider angle of illumination. Looking from a side

view, the Avalon now has more chrome trim, redesigned rocker panels, and new side mirrors with integrated turn signals. That said, you would also be forgiven for mistaking it for a Camry (not that there’s anything wrong with that). At the rear, oval-shaped dual exhaust pipes emerge from a new blacked-out lower bumper design. The tail lights have also been reshaped and have unique LED light pipes and both clear and red lenses.

A minor annoyance was the lack of a trunk lid latchrelease at the trunk. There’s an inside release button, but the only way to open it from the rear is with the key fob.

The Inside

It’s a spacious and elegant interior with comfy leather seating, plus a nice mix of chrome and wood grain trim materials. There’s also comfortable seating for three passengers in the rear with lots of leg and head room. The rear seatback recline feature is via a manual pull-up lever on the side of the seat cushion. A down-side to this feature is that the seatbacks don’t fold flat to provide an expanded cargo area. There is, however, a small cargo pass-through opening behind a drop-down centre armrest. A new instrument panel has new easier to view and chrome-ringed ‘Optitron’ gauges with graduated white illumination and white pointers. A wood and leather clad steering

Continued from page 15 There is only one Avalon trim (called XLS) and only one factory option, a special pearl paint finish that costs an additional $220. Extra nice standard features also include eight-way power heated leather seats, reclining rear seats, a navigation system with backup camera, power sunroof, automatic headlights, and fog lights. Toyota only sells the Avalon in North America. It was designed and engi-

Safety

While Avalon looks prestigious and luxury features abound, there is an eye to cost control that’s cunningly executed in order to bring it to market at a sub-Lexus price. For instance, it comes with a conventional key that you put in the ignition, instead of a push-button keyless system. Manual tilt and telescopic steering controls and halogen (not Xenon) headlights are two more, but some of these less-expensive features may even be preferred by potential owners. Steering effort is decidedly on the light side at low vehicle speed. see Avalon page 20

The 2011 Avalon’s roof withstood 4.07 times (the current federal standard is 1.5 times) its vehicle weight in tests performed be the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in order to claim the already mentioned “Top Safety Pick” award. The rollover test was added (in 2010) to the front, side and rear crash impact tests already performed by the IIHS and a good rating in all tests is required in order to win this award. Avalon also comes with electronic stability control and an additional driver’s side knee airbag, which brings its airbag total to seven. It also has active

Avalon: A comfortable cruiser

Continued from page 18 While it does firm up a bit as you pick up speed, it’s still on the vague side in terms of driver feedback. That said, sport handling is probably not high on the priority list on an Avalon target buyer and it is a very comfortable highway cruiser. Quiet yet powerful, Avalon’s V6 engine has a 24-valve system with a dual VVT-i electronic valve-control mechanism that helps provide a broader power

band. It also provides good fuel economy on regular gas.

BOOKS

Novice writer racks up a not so dirty dozen BY MICHELLE HOPKINS

mhopkins@richmond-news.com

W

hen Irene Butler speaks about the heart wrenching conditions she witnessed in the slums of Nepal, the pain is still etched in her eyes. While on a year-long trek around the world, the Richmond writer met Pundya, a 20-year-old Tiger Balm salesman on the streets of Kathmandu, Nepal. “He would spend 12 to 14 hours a day selling Tiger Balm to tourists for a profit of 25 cents per sale,” said Butler, adding the young man barely weighed 90 pounds, if that. Pundya braved the cold, windy weather wearing threadbare clothing and thongs, so that he could send money home to his parents. “My husband, Rick, and I came up with the idea of Pundya selling tea to locals for extra money,” said the 66-year-old award-winning writer. “We bought him a Thermos, tea, tin cups, sugar and powdered milk.” With all the purchases in tow, Pyndya led the couple to his home. “He pushed through a small, rather hidden door along a lengthy row of shops, to a dark passage that led to a courtyard, where a plethora of slum dwellings were unveiled,” said Butler, who added their investment in his small venture cost them $18 Canadian. “Then, when he showed us his pot half-filled with rice and vegetables and told us proudly that he saved cooking oil by making enough food for a week, my heart ached … that pot was what Rick and I each ate in one sitting.” That is only one of many deeply moving stories in the author’s inaugural book, Trekking the Globe with Mostly Gentle Footsteps – Twelve Countries in Twelve Months. The book chronicles the couple’s journey, which began in 2002, through Australia, China, Nepal, India, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Switzerland, Germany,

Irene Butler and husband, Rick, sold up and spent a thrilling year trekking the globe CHUNG CHOW/RICHMOND NEWS

Irene Butler and her husband have been trekking around the world to places such as China and India.

France and the United States. Butler kept a journal to record their grand adventure, which many of us only dream about and fewer dare to do. “I always loved to travel and I’m sure that if I ever shook my family tree, many gypsies would have fallen out,” quipped Butler. “Both of us get antsy if we don’t travel often.” Over the years, Butler had many careers — stay-at-home mom to her three sons, then working in the fields of education, real estate and retail, — joining her husband Rick in his Richmond Canadian Tire store. In 2000, the local couple sold the store and retired. “We explored the idea of trading our tourists hats to be travellers,” said Butler, who holds degrees in psychology and gerontology. “However, when we started planning for our year-long adven-

ture, we budgeted $100 a day, about the same amount we would have spent at home on a daily basis.” That was for both of them and included all meals, entertainment, lodging, incidentals and transportation. (It didn’t include any flights; they purchased two world-wide open tickets for approximately $4,500) “However, we were hard pressed to spend $50 a day between us in India.” Any residual money was added for the pricier countries in Europe and the United States. All told, the savvy travelers spent $35,808 over 355 days. (That comes to exactly $100.86/day). Their globe trekking was full of hair-raising adventures, humorous and frightening moments, as well as many deeply touching, wondrous tales to tell their seven grandchildren for many years to come.

One of their scariest encounters came in China. It was the end of August, in Chongqing, an off-the-beaten-track city built on a steep hill. After three days absorbing the sights and sounds of this fascinating city, the couple was ready to head out on a Three Gorges Tour. “We were trying to catch the bus to go on a river tour,” said Butler, adding prior to the trip, they had taken a six-month course to learn Mandarin. “With our limited Mandarin, we asked a man if he could help us locate where the bus office was.” Grinning, the man nodded and responding by leading the pair through a dingy passageway and into a series of tunnels. “Sirens went off in my head and I was completely scared,” Butler said. In her book, Butler described

finally entering an arena-size area lit by only two light bulbs dangling from the rafters, while workmen were digging up a dirt floor. In a tense moment, they watched as the men stopped their backbreaking labour to stare at them. “The man leading us grinned in a fiendish manner and led us into an office,” said Butler, adding all of their possessions — passports, money, credit cards and clothes — were on them. Thankfully, the man who led them through the maze was legitimate and took them directly to the bus ticket counter. Besides a few heart-stopping close calls and a couple of bouts of dysentery and stomach aches, the couple came home relatively unscathed, but more importantly, they came back armed with precious memories and tales to recount. Her 240-page paperback narrative has already garnered rave reviews. Butler said she was completely “shocked” when her first ever article, The Giants of Patagonia, was accepted and ran in many community newspapers across the Postmedia Works chain (of which the Richmond News is part). What’s next for the nomadic pair? At the end of October, they head for a five-month tour of the Middle East. Trekking the Globe with Mostly Gentle Footsteps – Twelve Countries in Twelve Months is a mix of historical and geographical facts, cultural experiences and travel tips. Meanwhile, Butler will be signing copies of her books on Saturday, Aug. 21 from 1-3 p.m. at Black Bond Books in Lansdowne Centre. ALBERTA

Picture-perfect scenery is abound in Jasper BY MICHELLE HOPKINS

mhopkins@richmond-news.com

Y

ou probably haven’t heard about Mary Schaffer … I know I hadn’t. But while on a trip to Jasper recently with my sister Johanne Enemark, I learned a lot about this fearless and adventurous pioneering woman. Schaffer was raised in Philadelphia’s high society, and yet in 1891 she left it all behind to explore the unknown wilds of the Canadian Rockies. As I stood in Jasper Provincial Park, in awe of the majestic peaks of the spectacular Rockies, our guide Fred MacMillan of Sun Dog Tours, regaled us with this amazing woman’s life story — the first nonnative woman to explore Jasper. A walking encyclopedia on Jasper, MacMillan also told us that the federal government, in honour of Schaffer’s numerous and successful expeditions in the Canadian Rockies, invited her to name all the stunning snow capped peaks in front of us. Like Schaffer, I feel under Jasper’s mesmerizing spell. We flew into Edmonton around 10 a.m. After picking up our rental car, we headed for the 4 ½ hour drive to Jasper. We arrived around 4 p.m. and checked into our hotel room at The Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre. We were instantly charmed by the large stone fireplace and hand built log furniture in the foyer. After dropping off our bags in our room, we walked into Jasper town centre. We wandered up and down the main streets, familiarizing ourselves with the area. We took the time to visit the Jasper Alberta’s Information Centre. It is housed in a rustic 1914 cobblestone and timber building. The staff here is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. We discovered there are many ways to truly experience Jasper. For us, it was by horse, by our own steam and via the waterways … white water rafting with the Rocky Mountain River Guides, a scenic and fun two-hour trip along the Athabasca River. While on our Maligne Valley tour, MacMillan provided wonderful little snippets about the fascinating natural and human history of Jasper National Park. MacMillan told us that 10,000 years of erosion created a 165-foot deep gorge. Along the Maligne River, we all marveled at the water as it thundered through the canyon in a series of waterfalls. We also stopped at Medicine Lake and then Maligne Lake, where we hiked along the Mary Schaffer Loop. Maligne Lake is indeed a picture-perfect land-

Michelle Hopkins and her sister Johanne Enemark take in the breathtaking views of Maligne Valley, considered one of the most spectacular gorges in the Canadian Rockies.

scape — you are surrounded by an open forest of lodge pole pine and spruce on the north end, and to the south are the ice capped mountains, which circle the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies. When it comes to dining, I have found that asking locals where to eat is always a good idea. A shop owner recommended a few of her favourites. Our first evening in this picturesque town, we ventured down to Evil Dave’s Grill (there’s a great

story behind the name; ask the owners). Great service, sinfully delicious cuisine housed in a funky, upbeat restaurant. The following day, after an early morning rafting trip, we had lunch at the Jasper Pizza Company, which offers artisan thin-crust pizza from its wood-burning oven. We arrived to a packed house, yet the waitress never rushed us and was quite friendly — even though we asked for a pizza with different toppings on each half.

The other local haunt was the Bear’s Paw Bakery. If you are craving homemade soups, sandwiches, fresh muffins, or even a baguette, this is it. P.S. Be prepared for long lineups, but it is well worth it! Meanwhile, as Francophones in B.C., we seldom get to practice our father’s tongue. We were thrilled to meet French-speaking Europeans from Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland and France. In fact, a stroll down the main street is cul-

turally enriching, with languages from around the world being spoken at every turn. Later the next day, while horseback riding with Skyline Trail Rides, located at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, we met up with a young father and his daughter from Holland. It was their inaugural trip to Canada and he told us he was in awe of the grandeur and size of Jasper. He quipped that he would get lonely in such vastness. No wonder! Holland is smaller than Vancouver Island and has a population of 16 million. Anyway, I digress… I was originally reluctant to go horseback riding because years ago I was thrown off a horse. However, our guide Susan ensured I saddled on a gentle horse named Lucy. I’m so glad I went, even though I fumbled to hoist my leg up onto Lucy’s massive girth. We trekked by three pristine lakes — Annette, Edith and Trefoil — as well as great mountain terrain with many elks grazing lazily nearby. We ambled leisurely through the rugged landscape, which was lined with a wide variety of conifers and deciduous trees. Afterwards, at my sister’s urging (OK, she didn’t have to ask twice), we sipped on a marguerita on the deck of the historic Jasper Lodge; the views are spectacular and the people watching equally so. That evening, we headed into town for dinner at the Jasper Brewing Company. Although I’m not a beer fan, Johanne is willing to indulge in a good pint now and then. The secret to their beer is that they craft it using pure Canadian Rockies water. I chatted with fellow diners, regulars here, and they gave big thumbs up to beer. For me, it was about the culinary journey and it didn’t disappoint. The following day, after our white water rafting escapade, Johanne and I had a few hours to kill before going on an evening wildlife tour. We asked the hotel concierge if there was a hiking trail nearby that would afford us great views of the valley below. Without hesitating, he mentioned the Old Fort Point’s Loop. The entrance to the loop is close to the city centre. The loop trail over the top is steep in places, but it presents superb views of Jasper and its surroundings. I read on one of Alberta’s travel sites that the name Old Fort is presumed to refer to Henry House, a North West Company cabin built near here in 1811, long gone but memorialized as a National Historic Site. see Jasper page 25

Jasper: Trip was a true adventure holiday Continued from page 24 There are a number of ways to reach the summit, the quickest route being up the stairs that start by the cliff. (The stairs lead to a Canadian Heritage Rivers plaque about the Athabasca.) But it’s a steep climb. Then there’s an easy one that begins behind the trail information kiosk. We, being hardy and competitive souls, decided on the former. If you have ever climbed the Grouse Grind, I can tell you this will be a challenging enough hike for you. After our climb, we had just enough time to shower and get ready for our Jasper Adventure Centre’s wildlife evening tour and a soak in the famous Miette Hot Springs — dubbed the sacred waters of the mountains. The tour was to be a highlight for both of us as we were excited at the thought of seeing wild animals up close. Our patience paid off. One of our traveling companions let out a “Look over there, on the side of the road” and there it was, our inaugural black bear sighting. Close enough to our van; the bear kept munching on the berries without giving us a second thought or even glancing up. On our fourhour excursion, we were fortunate enough to snap photos of two black bears, elk, deer, bighorn sheep and mountain goats. When we arrived home at the Vancouver International Airport after our four-days on the “wild side,” Johanne quipped that she had to come home to rest! Now that’s what I call an adventure holiday.

Did you know?

Jasper is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies. Wildlife in the park includes elk, caribou, moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, grizzly bear, black bear, beaver, Rocky Mountain pika, hoary marmot, gray wolf, mountain lion, and wolverine. The landscapes contain mountain peaks, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, canyons, and limestone caves, as well as fossils have been found here. As well as being surrounded by numerous pristine glacial lakes, the town is bordered by the Athabasca River in the east and the Miette River in the south. The park itself roughly encompasses 10,800 square km of natural Rocky Mountain land with the Icefields Parkway shared with Banff National Park on the south.

Super Mites finish 4th Spirited play sees success for first year rep team

CHUNG CHOW/RICHMOND NEWS

Richmond’s Nick Lee A (in white) goes for the ball against Edmonton in the B.C. Chinese Soccer Tournament at Minoru Park.

The Richmond Senior Select Super Mites turned in a strong showing at the recent 17th annual Mite Invitational Championships in Burnaby, placing fourth among 16 teams. The girls fastpitch team, comprised of nine and 10-year-olds, opened the tournament with a come-from-behind win over Tsawwassen thanks to a home run from Josie Cooke and a timely hit by Capri Horstmann. The second and third games against squads hailing from Vancouver and Newton presented challenges; however Richmond won both games behind the combined pitching of Tylere Morin and Ellen Yam. Richmond was then engaged in a pair of highly entertaining battles against Ladner. The first encounter saw Emilie Sherritt pitch an outstanding game in a 2-1 loss. She went the distance, striking out 15 batters and allowing just one hit and no walks. Natalie Caras and Cooke made key defensive players behind her. Sherritt took to the pitching circle again for the rematch and she again had a terrific outing, surrendering one hit and two runs. This time, her teammates provided

enough offensive support. In the bottom of the fifth and with two out, Abby Zawada hit a triple, scoring two hitters later to tie the game at two. Following a defensive gem at second by Morin to stem a Ladner rally — Richmond went to work in the bottom half of the seventh. Down one run, the Super Mites would not be denied as Sherritt — on second with two out — scored the winning run after Emily Latrace pounded a double to left. The exhausted Richmond squad played some spirited ball but would come up short in their final two games against gifted teams from Langley and Cloverdale. Contributing members of the squad whose steady efforts throughout the tournament factored in the team’s very successful run included Jalen Donaldson, Kenzie Wrightson, Miranda Herle, Serena Sturton, Anastasia Morrison and Natasha Kis-Toth. The Select team was coached by Larry Morrison, Bert McGolrick, Jody Latrace and Mike Morin. Summer Garage Sales Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Aries March 21 - April 19: Your month of joy continues! Problems might not be solved, but they ebb. You might need to make a choice regarding a relationship, a relocation, or an opportunity Monday, Friday/Saturday. Hint: doing what you want, opting for expansion or under standing, for cheerfulness, for legal, publishing, international or educational “growth” is luckier than seeking to further your ambitions through a relationship. But start no new projects before Sept. 12. (Others might be skeptical toward you for the next two years if you show “naked ambition.” You might marry into another generation.)

Cancer June 21-July 22: Start nothing new before Sept. 12. Instead, apply yourself to ongoing projects, and protect these from supply disruptions, secondguessing, delays and mistakes. Your home life is very active now through early September – if not on the outside, then emotionally. A real estate deal could involve your career or prestige ambitions – but don’t start a new one: keep with what’s begun. A “long lost” acquaintance might get in touch – good, not spectacular. Sunday/Monday are romantic. Work succeeds Tuesday/Wednesday. Relationships turn volatile Thursday/Friday: a structural change is “destined.”

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Before Sept. 12, start no new projects, especially in legal, governmental, administrative, manufacturing, tax, charitable, spiritual, educational, far travel, publishing or similar areas. Your romantic, social and personal magnetism is at a great peak – take advantage, don’t stay home! However, since nothing new will work, focus (until Sept. 12) on people you’ve already met. If you’re after love, stand before old flames, or present company. This week, your own sober outlook might subtly clash with kids, home, realty objectives – a partnership needs hope, assurance: give it!

Taurus April 20-May 20: Start no new projects before Sept. 12. Slowdowns, indecision, secondguessing, missed appointments and supply disruptions could “populate” the weeks ahead. An old flame might return soon – if after Aug. 21, it could lead to strong romance! If that happens, you will need to dec ide whether this relationship has a long-term future. Many half-hidden, slowly evolving forces and “subconscious wrestling matches” exist here. But it could be exceptional! Early week demands a choice between chores/duties. Financial luck high Tuesday/ Wednesday. Love fights work, Thursday onward.

Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Defer new starts, projects, relationships until Sept. 12. Those begun now will meet indecision, delay and, ultimately, lack of heart – especially in monetary regions. Focus on what’s already started – and money (etc.) from the past. August is a fine time to revisit old haunts, friends – pleasure is certain, flirtation and a bit of heartquickening quite possible, too! A trip might interfere with your work demands: if so, you choose. Sunday/ Monday emphasize home, kids and a casual vs. profound choice (in relationships, law, intellect, travel). Romance, creative flows, Tuesday/Wednesday!

Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Start nothing new before Sept. 12, especially in social, investment, financial and organizational zones. These areas might yield fruits from the past – be aware, ready to pluck them. (E.g., someone from an old social circle might call; or a past investment you couldn’t capture returns. Jump in, if you know it’s good.) A secret love could attract you August or early September. You might be wiser to wait until Sept. 9 onward, when your magnetism will soar! Vexations in communications/travel signal the need for a whole new system/vehicle, etc. – after Sept. 12.

Gemini May 21-June 20: Start nothing new, relationships nor projects, before Sept. 12. Delays, indecision, second-guessing and “no shows” increase. A former domestic matter, a prodigal child, a real estate idea/urge/project might return. This could be good, but be cautious: over the few months ahead, someone might oppose you in these areas. (This could take the form of unpredictable action by a cooperator or partner.) You’ve entered romantic territory. Early week, you face a choice between romance and friendship, or between being creative or social. Late week, DO NOT gamble with finances or sex!

Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Finish, advance ongoing projects. Refrain from starting anything new. A slowdown starts next week, lasting to Sept. 12. Sunday/ Monday could solidify a source of income,and/or bring a durable set of ideas, a practical “life philosophy” that helps you go forward steadily. Instability also lurks, if you allow pleasure or romantic notions to steer you away from duties or practical goals. Contemplate the different paths of earnings versus investments. You might make a choice between these now to mid2011. Rest, contemplate to Tuesday. Money’s good Friday/Saturday. A good week!

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Defer new starts until Sept. 12 onward – especially in relationships, career, VIP relations, litigation, negotiation, relocation and dealings with the public. (E.g., don’t start a public relations campaign, lawsuit, love affair, etc.) You might profit from reprising the past in these – e.g., contacting a former employer in your career search. Your social life hums along, and love could be real, “light” and non-suffocating. (Love’s laughter can be far healthier than love’s extremities.) You impress others Tuesday/Wednesday! All week, revise hopes to meet money realities.

August 15 - 21 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Don’t launch new projects or relationships before Sept. 12. Reprise past ventures, or continue with ongoing ones – protect the latter from misunderstandings, delays, missed appointments, etc. An old flame (the love was gentle, proper) might reappear in the weeks ahead. If you’re unattached, “re-engaging” probably couldn’t hurt! (He/she is ready to “go forth” sexually.) All week, your status, prestige, relations with higherups come under review. (It could be your review!) Deep changes are in store. Be aware that finance (and sex) has a “fooling glitter” right now. Caution. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Don’t start new projects or relationships before Sept. 12. Especially avoid new financial, mutual or partnership ventures.Deep desires, urges and insights well up from the past – a past sexual or financial interest might return also. Nothing wrong with these, but examine the financial before proceeding. Your legal, intellectual, love, cultural, educational and far-travel spheres grow increasingly active – and beneficial. This week presents a rare chance to seal a deal (NOT a new one!) in any of these areas – including love! Wishes can come true midweek – be diplomatic, reasonable. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: An “ex” might reappear in the next several weeks – or a relocation opportunity, a deal that was never quite cemented, an opportunity to place yourself in front of the public; if you’re unlucky, even a lawsuit. You’re working hard, so have less time for these “opportunities” – therefore, jump fast, carpe diem. Your financial and sexual urges are active and rising, but neither fits easily with your “wisest future,” so do some deep pondering – remember, you’re exiting a decade of hard work, entering one of enjoyment. Be ambitious mid-week. Decide between quick money, and big. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
