When driving by the Richmond Winter Club you might notice a couple of large Statistic Canada mobile trailers. Those trailers are home to the Canadian Health Measures Survey’s (CHMS) mobile clinic. Over the next five weeks, about 430 Richmond and Delta residents will descend upon the clinic to participate in an extensive study into the health and wellness of Canadians. $

The residents, ages three to 79, were chosen at random and were already pre-screened. This is the first such survey of its kind ever conducted into the health of Canadians, according to Joel Roy, site manager of physical health measures division, Statistics Canada. “Most of our health charts are based on American citizens,” said Roy, who added this is the second cycle of tests carried out by CHMS. “The last time Canada
conducted a simple height and weight study was in 1981. “We were in real need of a national health data base.” At the mobile clinic, the respondents will undergo a battery of tests, including body measurements, fitness tests — cardiovascular, grip strength, partial curl-ups and stretching exercises — as well as blood pressure and lung function. “We will also collect blood and urine samples to test for heart health,

Richmond RCMP have arrested an 18-year-old male in connection with graffiti — some of it racist — scrawled at an Asian strip mall. Two young men were caught on surveillance camera at Empire Centre, although the strip mall’s manager believes up to five people — four males and one female — may have been involved at different times. The surveillance footage helped RCMP identify one suspect, who was spotted by an RCMP bike patrol at the mall Wednesday. The young man tried to flee, but was caught and arrested. He was released from custody and has a court appearance Sept. 14 to face charges of mischief. His name has not been released.
Crude graffiti fills two levels of a stairwell at Empire Centre in the 4600 block of No. 3 Road. One of the suspects wrote “Ch--k” and “F--k the Chinese” next to a Swastika, underlining that with “KKK.” Someone also wrote “187 a pig” and “187 on an undercover cop” and “F--k the police.” The term “187” refers to the California State penal code for homicide. A “187” tattooed on gang members is said to mean the person has committed murder. Despite that, Cpl. Sherrdean Turley of the Richmond RCMP said the graffiti is not considered a serious threat. “No direct threat was made towards anyone,” she said, but described the graffiti as “hurtful and disrespectful.” see Graffiti page 4

The word “jailbird” also appears a few times. A number of individuals are also named in the kind of juvenile trash-talk one finds scrawled on high school bathroom stalls. The graffiti had been tolerated until around July 21 or 22, when someone scrawled the racist slurs against Chinese people and broke the security camera — the act that, ironically, resulted in a clear photo, which was made public. While graffiti typically
would warrant a charge of mischief, Turley said the racism in the writing could raise the incident to a hate crime. “We’re trying our best to find out who is responsible for this incident,” Turley said. “Investigators will likely be looking at whether or not this is a hate crime. If it is determined that this fits into the category of a hate crime, then the investigation will be looked at accordingly.”

Cummins long advocated for Coast Guard vessel
The waters off the coast of Richmond will soon be a lot safer —with the news that the Coast Guard on Sea island is to get a new $27.3 million hovercraft. One man with more reason than most to celebrate is Delta-Richmond East MP John Cummins, who has been advocating for many years for a new hovercraft for the Richmond-based Coast Guard. “This is great news for recreational boaters, commercial mariners, the Vancouver airport and all who rely on the Coast Guard hovercraft, should trouble occur,” Cummins said. “I have been fighting for a new hovercraft for almost a decade and am delighted by the news.” Hovercraft must be available on a 24/7 basis to affect marine rescues of boats in trouble and, most importantly, to be available to assist in the rescue of those aboard passenger jets that might be forced to ditch on the shallows and mudflats off the airport runway. There are no other craft or vessels that can so effectively operate in shallow water or on the mudflats when the tide is out. Hovercraft are high performance crafts requiring almost constant maintenance.
In order to maintain 24/7 coverage two hovercraft are required, due to down times for maintenance or when a vessel is deployed elsewhere. There are currently two hovercraft operating out of Sea Island. The new craft will replace the Penac, a European vessel constructed in 1984, which was purchased, and converted from a passenger vessel to a search-and-rescue craft by the CCG in 2004. Upgrades worth around $8 million extended the life of the vessel, but the operational capacity was still limited because of the restrictions associated with the original design. Cummins was critical last year of the ability of the Penac to deal with certain conditions and he ramped up his calls for a replacement craft. “When I raised the issue of the limitations of the Penac and the need for replacement with the Prime Minister in mid 2009, he was very supportive of the need to acquire a new state-of-the-art hovercraft capable of operating in all weather and sea conditions,” he said. Cummins’ Richmond colleague, Alice Wong, hailed the prime minister and minister of fisheries and oceans for finding the $27.3 million for the new vessel.
Shop owner fights would-be thief A local store owner was sent to hospital Monday with knife wounds after confronting a would-be thief. When a thief armed with a knife tried to rob the House of Cards gift shop at the Broadmoor Shoping Centre around 1:30 p.m., the store’s owner fought back. The man picked up a metal rod and managed to fight the thief off, but was badly gashed on the face in the process. He was not in to work Wednesday, but an employee at the gift shop said the store owner was sliced on the side of the face and had to receive stitches. As for the thief, he managed to get away, albeit empty-handed. RCMP were on the scene shortly after
receiving a call and conducted a search of the area. Despite the aid of a police dog, police were unable to track the man down. He is described dark-skinned male, about 5’5” tall, with closely cropped black hair and possibly a beard. He was wearing blue pants and a blue vest over a white tshirt. Cpl. Sherrdean Turley of the Richmond RCMP warned that victims should not try to resist in an armed robbery. “We encourage employees faced with this type of situation to cooperate with the suspects involved,” she said. “Your lives are worth much more than any amount of money found in a cash register.”

After the clinic visit, each respondent will be provided with a waterproof activity monitor to record normal physical activity patterns all day (except while sleeping), for a week. “They also go home with an indoor air sampler to collect air samples in their home,” said Roy. “It will measure a number of airborne substances.” Once the data is compiled and measured, researchers across the country will be able to access these statistics for various studies. “These stats will be used to build a data bank for researchers to use,” said Roy. “While some general data will be released to the general population, such as the average height, weight and BMI (body mass index, measuring the body fat

percentage), most of the data will be for the specific use of researchers. “The results will guide future health care policies and public health programs or could be used to eventually change the food guide,” said Jeanine Bustros, director of physical health measures division, Statistics Canada. Dr. Meena Dawar, medical health officer with the Vancouver Coastal Health, is thrilled about the survey. “I think it will provide a very interesting picture about the general health and fitness of Canadians and the stats will be very useful to us,” said Dawar. “The only drawback that I can see is that the stats will
not be broken down by province. “However, I think that by randomly choosing the residents, this will give us a truer image of Canadians physical health.” The price tag per year to Canadian taxpayers? A cool $14 to $17 million. “Canadians need to understand that it costs $2,000 per respondent just for the extensive lab tests because we are being very careful to avoid cross contamination,” said Bustros. The first-ever comprehensive health survey by Statistics Canada is currently underway in Richmond. But don’t tell our local Conservative MPs that, because if they ever tip off Stephen Harper, he just might put a stop to it. After all, if Harper thinks filling out a long census form is too intrusive, a health survey that requires urine and blood samples will surely drive him into an obscurantist rage. Last month, the Harper government announced it would scrap the mandatory long census form, because it constitutes an unreasonable invasion of privacy, and replace it with a voluntary form. The problem with voluntary surveys is that it does not give you a truly random and accurate snapshot. The information gathered in these long census forms are important for a wide range of social services agencies, which rely on data on things like income, housing, education, etc. It helps them get a more accurate picture of social problems, like poverty. Economists also rely on this kind of information, as do journalists, police and various government agencies. Accurate information helps guide government in policy making, so Harper’s antipathy towards the census long form only feeds his reputation as being indifferent to social justice issues. We think information about Canadians is a good thing, which is why we welcome the Canadian Health Measures Survey being conducted here by Statistics Canada for the creation of a national health database. Much of the information used to inform policies on health in Canada comes from U.S. surveys, which is ridiculous, considering how differently our two countries’ health systems work. Harper needs butt out and let Statistics Canada do its job.

The Editor, I want to point out the ridiculous parking situation at the oval. It is touted as a great place to get in shape, and it is. However, on this day, today, I dropped my daughter off at her Richmond oval camp and I fully ignored the parking ticket machine, as I would expect that the city knows full well that parents will just take their kids in and then come out as I did, a total round trip of six minutes. Did I break the rules with not purchasing a $2.50 for one hour parking stub? Yes, I did, and for that I will pay the $35 parking fine. What I want to get across to everyone and in particular the City of Richmond is, to expect people, especially parents on their own, to pay $2.50 for six minutes of time is ridiculous. I was not even aware of the 10 minute drop off parking, there are no clear signs when you come in that they exist. Even so, there are only a few, what if they are full? Well, you have to purchase a ticket. So you are back to where we were to begin with. So to drop your child off and walk them safely into the building and out for the one week of camp will cost a parent an additional $25 for a grand total, using my in and out time, of one hour. This is totally stupid if you ask me. The city when putting on these camps should inform parents of the parking options, and also issue a camp stub for drop off parking so parents can drop their kids off at the facility safely. I would also like to know how it was, that the parking enforcement officer was there at the exact time that camp started? Is the city that in need of money? Mark Rasmussen Richmond

HST doesn’t = Happy Summer Time Here we are, four weeks into the new harmonized sales tax (HST) and how are we feeling? It seems to me that everything is costing more. And here I thought that right-wing governments billed themselves as tax adverse! I’m certainly not opposed to taxes, but at least they could have said the revenue would be used for health and education instead of leaving it to our imagination. Well I guess someone has to pay for the Olympics and the G20 summit — and that means us. I found the easiest way to understand the HST is that now we pay PST on things that were only GST taxed before. In other words, that means another seven per cent on a lot of stuff. For a list of PSTadded items, I reviewed the B.C. government’s website on HST. Hmm, I see it’s at the top of the Google listing — looks like there have been a lot of hits lately. I wonder what the feds and the province are trying to tell us? Ah hah, now I see — the HST is a form of social engineering! Here are some lessons we are being taught. ❚ Learn to do it yourself, why bother to hire a tradesperson? Or pay cash and

avoid the tax altogether. ❚ Buy new clothes, not used. ❚ Buy food that comes from far away places; don’t bother to grow your own food because those little plants are now taxed. ❚ Let your support for local live theatre, concerts, clubs and community events dry up; they are just frills anyway. ❚ And for those things you can’t avoid paying for — weddings and funerals and safety gear — well let’s just soak the poor suckers. There is some good news though, liquor taxes went down from 15 per cent to 12 per cent. There you go, there’s no need to cry in your beer. Anyway, did you know that we don’t have to pay any tax on municipal water? Great, no tax on a tax. So in light of all this downer news, here’s my formula for a happy “taxfree summer.” ❚ Visit any branch of the Richmond Public Library and take out books, CDs and DVDs or read newspa-
pers and magazines from around the world or surf the net, all for free. ❚ Go and experience the exhibits in the Richmond Art Gallery and the Richmond Museum — it’s free admission every day. ❚ Or you can pack a picnic dinner and take your kids to one of the many water parks in our fair city. ❚ Or bike around the dyke with your friends or go for a walk in any of our beautiful parks. ❚ Or take your dog to one of the off-leash parks and have a chinwag with the other doggie people. ❚ You can also offer to help out at the Sharing Farm or at Terra Nova community garden, there is always lots to do. As for me, I’ll be at the doggy park or biking along the Shell Road trail, or in my garden growing veggies and flowers, enjoying the good life. But you’ll never see me with home-cut hair or doing my own plumbing or buying veggies from Mexico. I must draw the line, some things just shouldn’t change. I won’t be giving up my community centre membership either. And for sure I’ll still be going to concerts and live theatre wearing my awesome gently used clothing.

The Editor, Re: “If you can’t bust them — legalize them,” News, July 21. To all Richmond city councillors: I was unable to attend the council meeting on July 25 with regard to the rezoning of property from agriculture to industrial storage to permit commercial vehicle parking and storage at the 16780 River Rd. site. I was unaware of the council meeting mentioned in this article or I would have attended. Who would have expected council to side with law-breakers against the wishes of the law-abiding residents in that area? I continue to be surprised with council’s legitimizing illegal use of land (Lulu Island Winery and now this). Their job is to enforce the laws, not look the other way, thus tacitly approving flouting of the rules. If council wishes to change the rules, then hold well-publicized public hearings. Don’t change the rules ad-hoc for the benefit of law-breakers. From the article in the Richmond News,
I gather that this was what was expected to happen (quote from the article): “But, with no apparent opposition from the floor at city council’s public hearing this week, the rezoning was approved and will now go forward to Monday’s full council, where it’s expected to be rubber-stamped.” This article’s report of the council meeting states that “there was no apparent opposition from the floor” at this meeting, yet the article’s first sentence states “Despite fierce public opposition”.... which council had received over time but ignored except for finally handing out some citations. Now the law-breakers have ‘stared down’ the council and achieved their aim. The message to be taken from council’s actions is that if you wish to have a law changed for your advantage, just keep breaking it repeatedly and you’ll finally get your way by having the law cancelled/ changed. Rezoning rewards scofflaws
SPCA shouldn’t compete with city shelter literally hundreds of cats at the cat sanctuary operated by RAPS. When the SPCA imports animals from other communities for adoption in Richmond it means that our local dogs and cats may not get a home. While the SPCA does wonderful work, I find it confusing that they would continue to operate an adoption centre in a community where they do not take in local animals for adoption. B. The Editor, “Cat, kitten adoptions down at BC SPCA,” News, July 23 The News reported that adoptions are down at the Richmond SPCA adoption centre. With television cameras rolling, Rima Elisia Andre slowly gets out of the car at Richmond’s Auto West BMW. The 36-year-old thought she was there to pick up a part for her friend’s father’s BMW, before heading for a day at the beach. Covering her face, the petite Andre, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 terminal cancer in her breast and liver just over a year ago, looks somewhat overwhelmed. A tall man sporting a rather scary looking blue mask and red suit — a.k.a the Blue Man or the Genie – is approaching to tell her she’s been awarded an Experience Dream Day. With that, Andre looks over to the women who nominated her — Danielle Schroeder, counsellor and coordinator of youth programs at the Callanish Society and Tammy Dyson, her hospice palliative care social worker — and starts to cry. “I’m completely taken off guard and I had no idea,” says the Trinidad-born Andre. “But when I saw the Genie, I knew what was happening because I’ve seen him on television.” With that, cameras flash and television crews start to interview her. Soon, Andre is whisked off in the black Z4 convertible with her “genie” for a day of fun and pampering. Sporting a huge smile, Andre lets out a whoop and raises her arms in the air for a wave. “I’m sure I’m going to turn a lot of heads with this car,” says Andre of the $100,000 sleek Beemer. The man behind the mask is entrepreneur Joshua Dawson, who founded The Experience Genie over a year ago. Over the course of a year, he has traveled to 30 different cities. Dawson — who is originally from St. John’s Newfoundland and runs his company out of Montreal — journeys across the world on the lookout for “local heroes” for an Experience Dream Day of new, exciting adventures and experiences. “I started this because five years ago my father passed away from cancer,” said Dawson, who has been interviewed by all the major Canadian and American television stations, including CTV, CBC, Global, NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox. “I had always wanted to provide a great day out for my father and sadly it was too late … I felt it was time for

Two decades ago, Jeff Fisher, executive chef at Replay Lounge in Sports Central, started in the hospitality industry as a dishwasher for Boston Pizza. Rather quickly, he moved up the food chain, working for Vancouver’s Luisville Bistro where he snagged best
for its patio in the coming months. The chef is still renowned for his mouthwatering soups and still wins awards. Replay combines an upscale menu while still offering a sports bar ambiance. Replay boast good food to go along with its large patio with fireplace,
situated right across the manmade sand beach. This long weekend, the News asked Fisher for a succulent burger for your backyard barbecue party. Here’s a unique twist on the beef burger.
BBQ BASIL & PROSCIUTTO BURGER
METHOD: In large bowl, mix ground beef with one large egg, and breadcrumbs. Add minced garlic, salt, pepper, BBQ sauce, ketchup, and Hp sauce into the bowl, and mix together. Dip hands in water and gently shape beef into four patties roughly five ounces each. Take prosciutto and wrap around the burger patty, use three slices per patty. Place in frying pan on med-high heat;
use a press or the bottom of another pan with tin foil between to sear. Press each patty for one minute or so. Place on the barbecue and cook until done, which will roughly take eight minutes. Place buns on barbecue to lightly toast them While patties are cooking, put the mayonnaise into a bowl and mix in the sun dried tomato pesto. Spread on both side of buns and add the fresh

Westerns next for ’94B Islanders Provincial silver medalists host championships Aug. 5-9 at London Park
Sam Young’s Richmond 94B Islanders are heating up as they prepare to host the Western Canadian Bantam B Girls Championship at London Park, August 5-9. The Islanders will head into the Western showcase event with plenty of momentum after finishing second at the recent provincial championships in Port Alberni. The girls’ season started on a somber note, with the unexpected and tragic passing of assistant coach Dennet Kuan in December. Coach Kuan’s role on the team was immeasurable and his knowledge and enthusiasm for the game were going to be sorely missed. But each and every person associated with the team knew that he would want them to continue on and play the game they all love. And so they did, with heavy hearts. The season, dedicated in Kuan’s memory, has been very successful thus far. The Islanders finished with a 17-1-1 record in league play and captured the Lower Mainland championship. Tournament play also featured a victory at their own invitational and second place in
Abbotsford. Richmond opened the provincials with a 23-2 romp over Ridge Meadows and produced three more mercy rule wins over the ’95 Islanders, Surrey Storm and White Rock to secure the second seed for the double knockout championship round. The locals continued where they left off with a 9-1 victory against North Vancouver but then were surprised 4-0 by White Rock, sending them to the loser’s bracket. The long road back into championship contention began with a 9-2 win over the Naramata Wildfire, behind the solid pitching of Melissa Holyk. Richmond looked to be on its way to another easy win, this time against the Nanaimo Breakers, when the Island squad erupted for five runs in the fifth and would eventually take the lead. The Islanders responded in the bottom of the seventh with a run and then with Erin Lee and Madison McCardell in scoring position, Katie Ross came to bat and stroked a clutch two-out walkoff single to cash in both runners. The locals then got a chance to avenge its earlier loss to White
Rock and they did just that, scoring early and often. Jen Kuan flirted with a perfect game and the defence of Kianna Trewin in centerfield, Ross in right, Maddy Schram in left, Robyn Wozny at third, Simmi Sidhu at shortstop, Lee at second, Emily Dawydiak at first and catcher Samara Young shut down the Thunder offence completely in a 13-0 win. The championship game was a tall order against a rested Abbotsford Outlaws team that has not lost a game this season. Despite some excellent defence and pitching from Madison Kaplan, the Outlaws took a 2-0 lead into the fifth. The Islanders answered when Dawydiak drove in Ross and Lee with her ninth extra base hit of the tournament. Abbotsford regained the lead for good in the sixth with a pair of unearned runs to make it 4-2. Richmond did manage to put the tying run on base in the seventh but settled for silver. Coach Young and assistants Allan Levy, Marissa Young and pitching coach Rob Scott could not be more proud of the effort, dedication and determination their girls have put forth all season.

Goalkeeper Raffy Paterno, came out thrice during the game first to clear a ball, second for stunning punch clearance before a Kamloops player was able to get his head on a nice cross and a clean defensive slide tackle several yards outside the 18 yard box preventing a Kamloops breakaway. Legge scored his second goal of the game midway through the second half as he dribbled past two Blaze defenders before blasting the ball home. Matthew Ward and Jordan Lau both sprained their ankles in the dying minutes of the game. Odjegba was chosen by BC Soccer officials as the Most Valuable Player of the game. The Gunners had tuned up for the Provincial Cup final by capturing the Baker Blast Tournament in Bellingham.

The Richmond City Young Gunners capped a remarkable season in fitting fashion, capturing the Provincial U13A Cup with a 3-0 victory over the Kamloops Blaze. The visiting Coastal Cup champions wasting little time in drawing first blood against their Interior opponent as Ovie Odjegba found the back of the net just minutes after having his initial goal was waved off. He would set-up Matt Legge to make it 2-0 at the interval. Gunners' midfielders Leuvin Ray Ebora, Jordan Lau, and Matthew Thomas, along with forwards Savin Sandhu, Damon Couling and Fraser Kirkland enjoyed a wide edge in possession, patiently passing the ball around and pounding the Kamloops goal on every opportunity. Two July cases, one from the B.C. Court of Appeal and one from the B.C. Supreme Court, provide good insight into current law in the areas of incapacity and unjust enrichment. Adult children of elderly parents may find these cases of interest. Antrobus v. Antrobus Linda Antrobus is the eldest child of William and Joan Antrobus. As a young girl, Linda was given significant responsibilities by her parents. She cooked, cleaned and looked after her youngest siblings. She did not have a life typical of a teenager. As an adult, she managed her parents’ properties. When she was older, her parents promised her their entire Estate in consideration for all her services. In 1999, Linda and her parents had a confrontation, which ended Linda’s assistance. Later on, Linda discovered her parents made a Trust, in favour of Linda’s siblings, which countered her parents’ earlier promises with respect to their Estate. Linda sued. The Supreme Court of B.C. set aside the parents’ Trust agreement, and declared that the parents were unjustly enriched from Linda’s services. Linda was awarded $190,000 in damages, which was about a quarter of the value of her parents’ assets. That was based on the distribution in the parents’ Wills. Linda’s parents appealed. The Court of Appeal did not allow the parents’ appeal, expressing the view, in general, that the Supreme Court Judge assessed the case properly. Thus, the Trust was indeed set aside, and the unjust enrichment declaration stood. However, the Court reduced the damages awarded, to $100,000. The Court said that the damage calculation in cases like these is not “purely a mathematical exercise” and that the goal is fairness. Linda’s siblings also assisted their parents over the years, and so the Court in its effort to be fair, felt $100,000 would be adequate as a damage award. RE Mesley (The Committeeship of Emma Helene Mesley) Emma Mesley, mother of two daughters, lived in Calgary. One daughter, Celeste Duvenhage lived in Kelowna and the other, Heather Thompson, lived in North Vancouver and South Africa. In 2003 Emma signed a personal directive, appointing Celeste as her agent (under Alberta law). A year later, Emma was unable to manage her affairs. Celeste first arranged to move her to Kelowna, and into a care facility. Ms. Thompson brought an application for Committeeship, and was opposed by her sister. They ultimately reached an agreement, in 2005, on Emma’s care. However, in 2008 the application of Ms. Thompson was again brought. It appeared Ms. Duvenhage was not communicating well with the staff at the care facility, and Ms. Thompson was concerned that Emma might be moved to a new facility, which would not be in her best interests. Ms. Duvenhage opposed the application of her sister. The Court rendered an excellent, interesting judgment. First the Court pointed out that Emma when she was competent chose Celeste as her agent (not Ms. Thompson). Second, the Court noted Celeste resides in the same community, Kelowna, as her mother while Ms. Thompson does not. Third, the Court said that the mere fact of the deterioration in the relationship between Celeste and the care staff is not enough to change the authority for health management from Celeste to Ms. Thompson. The Court also referred to some poor statements made in an affidavit of Emma’s family physician. He said in one paragraph that Celeste has a difficult personality and that is why she wants to move her mother to a new facility, and her relationship with the care facility staff has deteriorated. Those opinions were not supported by evidence, and so the Court did not accept the doctor’s statements. The Court concluded that regardless whether Celeste’s personality is difficult, she is still an appropriate person to care for her mother (whose Estate by the way was less than $10,000 and so certainly Celeste was not doing the work in expectation of a large inheritance) and it was in Emma’s best interests to have Celeste as her Committee. Perhaps because of the controversial nature of the case, the Court ordered that it remain for three years the sole Court to hear any future applications in the case. This is not commonly ordered by Courts in cases like these. Summary These two cases are illustrative of several facts. Among them is that disputes among families are inevitable, albeit unfortunate, and certainly every family is different. The level of emotion in such situations tends to be high and although compromise can be valuable, one can’t expect it all the time. Also, in the Antrobus case, you might ask whether Linda could have secured something in writing from her parents, once they promised her their Estate. However, generally you might think this state of affairs in a family should not have to be. In my opinion, we have reached a stage in the evolution of law where Estates tend to be larger than they were a century ago, and children may actually be entitled to expect some compensation for services they provide on behalf of their parents. I am not sure that entitlement existed years ago. Finally, it is worth mentioning that for Linda Antrobus, it is hard to observe how she clearly sacrificed for her family, and how her life must have been significantly affected by her parents’ decision (that lead her to sue). There are few solutions to such problems.

An SUV that’s not a big drinker Outlander has a new look, a car-like feel and better fuel economy for 2010

A complete redesign for the 2010 model year gives the Mitsubishi Outlander a bold new look, a more car-like feel and better fuel efficiency. It takes steps away from its SUV roots, yet still offers off-road driving capability and it can seat up to seven occupants. The base Outlander ES ($25,498) trim comes with an economical 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that’s matched with continuously variable ( CVT) automatic transmission. It’s the only front-drive version of the Outlander and 9.5/7.2 L/100km city/highway fuel economy is possible on regular gas. An ES trim with all-wheel-drive ($27,998) is also available. Both the LS ($29,498) and top-line XLS ($34,498) trims come with a 3.0-litre V6 and a six-speed conventional automatic transmission. A hideaway third row of seating is also included with the V6 models, and the XLS trim comes with Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC). An advanced full time all-wheel-drive
Our test Outlander was a top-line XLS trim. It also came with a Navigation and Entertainment Package ($4,000), which included a backup camera, a rear seat DVD system and a 40 GB music server with the navigation system. Its all-in price (including delivery and PDI costs) came to $40,198 before taxes.
The looks
The new Outlander has been completely redesigned with a fresh new look. system with an “active” front differential, the Mitsubishi S-AWC system is designed to provide superior traction and cornering control.

Like the Lancer (reviewed a couple of weeks ago) the Outlander now comes with what Mitsubishi calls its “jet fighter” front grille. A taller body makes the blacked-out front opening even bigger on the Outlander and it comes with chrome trim. Big fender flares and blacked-out roof supports (B-and C-pillars) are distinctive elements of the new Outlander design. The rear quarter panel fascia has been redesigned and it now comes with heated, colour-keyed and folding door mirrors. see Seats page 23

Our test Outlander came with a mostly grey interior, including leather upholstery which had nice stitching on the seams. The second row seats were on a (fore/aft) rail system and they had a tumble-forward feature to expand the rear cargo area. Passengers sitting in the second row sit higher than those in the front and additional space under the front seats for their feet is provided. It was a relatively flat 60/40 split seat and I had just about enough headroom (those over six feet probably not).

Outlander’s tailgate is strong enough to support a 200 kg/440 lb. load or could be used as a sporting event seat. Control (ASC) system is standard on all versions of the Outlander. The Drive
The larger V6 engine is a smooth performer with higher horsepower numbers than torque, making it more of a sprinter than a puller. Still, it fits well with the sporty, lightweight athletic character of the new Outlander, which offers a nice blend of practicality and performance. On a level surface and with a light load, the V6 can make the Outlander move very quickly and it sounds great doing it. On a steep hill or with a heavy load on board, on the other hand, more low-speed engine grunt would be desirable. A rotary knob on the centre console allows selection of the three SAWC modes, which are Tarmac (paved roads), Snow (or ice) and Lock (off-road). Simple to use
