Going up, not down City’s greenhouse gas emissions rising despite reduction plan BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
The City of New Westminster is finding it’s no easy feat to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 2008, the city adopted a corporate energy and greenhouse gas emissions reduction plan. It set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15 per cent in 10 years. “Relative to the 2007 base year, the city’s total greenhouse gas emissions quantity has increased by one per cent, or 57 tonnes,” said a staff report. “The largest change of greenhouse gas emissions occurred in the vehicle fleet sector with a increase of 58 tonnes or four per cent. The buildings sector was the only sector which showed a slight decrease in emissions.” Coun. Jonathan Cote said there are a number of reasons for the overall increase in emissions. He said the city launched a new “clean green” pickup service last year, which keeps yard waste from going to the landfill, but it also required the addition of a truck in the city’s fleet. “There are more trucks driving around,” he explained. the school. Each class gets to come in and do their Christmas shopping. They are very excited to come in.” That was evident by the smiles around the room as the kids purchased their gifts and showed their purchases to their friends. “Look at this!” said one Grade 2 student. “I got this for my mom, this for my dad and this for my grandma.” Students were able to select three items on Day 1 of the Kelvin Gift Company and purchase additional items on Day 2. “My mom and dad and sister will like me,” said one Grade 2 boy, who was pleased with the items he’d selected. “They will thank me.” Parents who volunteered at the event helped students select items and tally up
their purchases. “I have just had my first tearjerker,” Partaik said shortly after the event got underway. “A little girl who doesn’t speak English didn’t understand she was supposed to bring money. She had no money.” At the Kelvin Gift Company, no child leaves empty-handed even if they don’t have much or any money. A handful of pennies has the same financial clout as a $5 bill. “I had someone say, ‘How much is this?’ I said, $1,” Partaik recalled. “She said, ‘I only have 35 cents.’ I said, ‘It’s 30 cents.” As Partaik staffs the till, she tries to see how much money students have before she tells them the price of their purchases. ◗Kelvin Page 9

New Westminster’s past and present MLA are shocked and saddened that NDP leader Carole James has decided to resign as party leader because of dissension among some caucus members. James announced Monday that she was stepping down as NDP leader as soon as an interim leader is chosen early in the new year. She’ll continue to serve as an MLA. “It’s with a deep sense of regret that I accept Carole’s decision,” said MLA Dawn Black. “It’s her decision to make. She has done that because she believes it is in the best interest of the New Democratic Party and the best interests of the people of British
Columbia.” James said some members of the NDP caucus have decided to use their time and energy infighting, instead of working on behalf of British Columbians. “I’ve spent my entire life working at building things, not complaining and taking them apart,” she said in a prepared statement. “And right now, at this point in time, my time and energy as leader is consumed with the infighting. And that’s not right. It’s not productive, it’s not useful and most importantly, it’s not serving the people of British Columbia.” When James was elected as leader of the provincial NDP seven years ago, the party had two seats in the legislature. The NDP now has 35 seats. “It’s going to be a very difficult road ahead,” Black said. “We all have a responsibility to attempt to put our personal feelings aside and work with what should unite us – that is a belief
that the Liberals have been a disaster for this province in many ways.” Black believes that the only thing that can unite the party is to have people working for a common goal. “I am grieving somewhat,” she told The Record Tuesday. “I feel very strongly we have missed a political opportunity under Carole James’ leadership that only comes along very seldom.” Black said she would not be putting her name forward as the NDP leader, and hasn’t talked to anyone about their leadership plans. James’ decision to resign as NDP leader came less than a week after Vancouver Mount Pleasant MLA Jenny Kwan issued a statement criticizing James’ leadership. She had the support of about a dozen MLAs. “I am in absolute shock that a minority of the caucus can act like a cult and absolutely give no

`Bellies chase the cold away 24th annual Hyack Christmas Parade attracts hundreds The 24th version of the 2010 Hyack Christmas Parade of Lights went off swimmingly on a cold, but clear Saturday night. Honorary parade marshal Wayne Goss, a former New Westminster Salmonbellies superstar, was accompanied by a crew of young lacrosse players and rode in the showcase car for the parade that started at 4 p.m. and finished at Hyack Square with a tree lighting. Of course, the guest of honour was also present, as Santa and Mrs. Claus were out handing out candy canes to the hundreds of people who lined Visit www.royalcityrecord.com for a parade photo gallery Columbia Street for the annual celebration. Other highlights of the parade included students from Dance With Me and Dance Imagination performing, the Hyack Ambassadors waving to the crowd and The Christmas Revelers performing at the tree lighting ceremony. The Hyack Festival Association is the key sponsor/organizer of the parade and works with the City of New Westminster and the Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Society to help put together this holiday tradition. Organizers also collected non-perishable food items, unwrapped gifts and clothing items at Hyack Square. Those items will be distributed to the needy prior to Christmas.

Man injured in house fire Cause of blaze still to be determined BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
A man was hospitalized after suffering burns in a house fire in the Massey/ Victory Heights neighbourhood on Monday night. John Hatch, the fire department’s division chief of public safety and fire prevention, said the twostorey home on Scott Street suffered extensive damage after fire ripped through the house about 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 6. There is extreme damage to the main floor, and heat and smoke damage to the upper floor. “The cause is under investigation,” he said. “There were some serious burns to one of the occupants. With those burns we want to find out the reason.” Fire and police investigators attended the scene Monday morning to investigate the cause of the fire. A cause and damage estimate haven’t yet been determined. “The fire started on the main floor of the house,” Hatch said. “We are investigating the area of origin. We are still on scene.” Members of the New

Westminster Police Service’s forensic and identification teams were part of the investigation, because of the injuries sustained by the occupant. A man suffered “serious burns” to his upper body. “When the fire crews arrived from the Glenbrook fire hall, the structure was fully involved with flames coming out the front room window, the front door and heavy smoke to the back kitchen area,” Hatch said. “Flames had already extended to the dormers upstairs.” Fire crews ensured that the fire didn’t spread to neighbouring homes. “Absolutely,” Hatch
said about the risk. “There was a major threat. The fire crews did an excellent job to keep it contained to the house of origin.” A large dog was rescued from the two-alarm fire, which required several off-duty firefighters to be called. “The occupant managed to get out onto the porch,” Hatch said. “A young boy from across the street encouraged the man to jump off the deck to the driveway below.” The New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service didn’t have any information about the man’s condition before The Record’s press time

spilled and more damage caused when citizens were kept in the dark about the actions of their governments. The weapons of mass destruction that didn’t exist, yet were used to justify starting a war, come to mind. There’s also the small issue of the sub-prime mortgage meltdown and global economic crisis that was ignored by those who were in a position to see it coming. If knowing information means preventing war and economic collapse, we say long live the leaks.
‘Palace coup’ is trouble for NDP IN THE HOUSE KEITH BALDREY
T
he palace coup against NDP leader Carole James may have succeeded in removing her from the leadership, but it has created a giant crack in the unity of the party. It also raises serious doubts about the party’s ability to govern. Make no mistake: the 13 socalled “dissident” MLAs have inflicted enormous damage on their party and on their colleagues. While there’s no question James’ weak leadership was a challenge for the NDP, the method used to take her out will leave scars that run deep within a party that prides itself on embracing, among other things, giving women real political power. The party has been trying to portray itself as the “government in waiting.” This is an important image to craft, as voters have to be sure they are putting a responsible, competent bunch of people in office, with control over everything from the health-care system to environmental protection to taxes. Instead, the internal meltdown has portrayed the party as a clownish bunch willing to bend to the will of a minority driven

by self-interest rather than the greater good of the majority. Can you imagine behaving that way in government? Would an NDP premier give in to 13 dissidents in the caucus who were upset by a policy position agreed to by the majority? The dissidents have been described by some of their colleagues in the NDP caucus as behaving like “anarchists” and have proven impossible to deal with. One of the dissidents, Harry Lali, has said this whole episode shows it is the end of “party discipline.” Given that – and given that his dissident colleagues appear to agree with him – how does James’ successor fare any better dealing with the caucus? Jenny Kwan’s suicide-bomber approach to forcing James out of office should give everyone in the caucus who is considering becoming interim leader serious pause for concern. What guarantee does anyone have that Kwan will not pull a similar stunt against them? Indeed, Kwan and her colleagues’ nuclear attack against James has wounded the credibility of those who backed James. The top talent of the NDP caucus (which does not include any of the dissidents, by the way) has been tainted by the anti-democratic actions of the minority. So how does the NDP get it together from here?
Losing sleep over traffic troubles Dear Editor:
My wife and I bought our house on Rousseau Street in March 2000. We’ll have been here for 11 years this spring, if we’re still here. We’ve had many a sleepless night lately thinking about this. TransLink wants to build the United Boulevard Extension though our neighbourhood. The stated purpose of the extension is to connect United Boulevard to Brunette and facilitate trucking and the movement of goods as part of the North Fraser Perimeter Road. The issue is the train tracks that cross Braid, just east of Brunette. When the trains are running through there, traffic backs up in all directions. The proposed solution is to build an overpass over the tracks and SkyTrain that will connect to United Boulevard at the east end and to Brunette at the west end using one of four connecting options. Option A involves building an elevated roadway ◗NDP Page 7 with a “T” intersection at the top. It’s essentially a
half-kilometre-long hill, 30 feet high at the apex, with a traffic light at the top, at a cost of $175 million. City council calls this the “least contentious” option and wants TransLink to forget the other three. This is what city council approved “in spirit” in 2007, and they are upset that TransLink came up with and then presented the other three options to the public. Of course TransLink came up with more options! This one has no hope of accomplishing its stated purpose. The idea is to facilitate truck movement. City council thinks you do this by forcing them up a steep hill. When you add a light at the top, things only get worse. They’ll be lucky to get four or five trucks through a 90-second light. Trucks will be lined up all the way down the hill, through the Brunette/Braid intersection and back down Brunette to the highway overpass all day long. Those of us that like to open our doors and windows on nice days can forget it because the continuous truck noise will be deafening.

Add to that the huge clouds of exhaust fumes that are expelled by those trucks going up that hill. This option condemns the neighbourhood to a hell of continuous noise and pollution. Option B involves connecting the overpass to a cloverleaf at a cost of $167 million. Most of this would be at grade (ground level), with a gentler rise to the overpass, that the trucks will be able to get going and gain speed before having to climb. There are no extra stops or intersections involved in this option, just a smooth and steady flow of traffic. With less climbing and no stopping, both the noise and the pollution will be cut to where it is no worse than it is now. Option C involves connecting the overpass to the end of Rousseau Street at a cost of $151 million. This would turn Rousseau into a four-lane highway down a residential street. All I can say about this is that someone at TransLink obviously has a sense of humour. This option would run all those trucks down Rousseau to Braid and from there down to Brunette and vice versa. Traffic on Braid is already bad enough, thank you, and no amount of noise barriers and/or landscaping could make the houses on Rousseau livable. Option D is much like Option B, except it has less ramps and adds another intersection on Brunette about one block south of Braid, for a cost of about $152 million. While better than Option A as far as noise and pollution, the extra intersection adds stop and go and means less efficiency and more noise/pollution than Option B. That
extra intersection could also cause havoc with the flow of Brunette traffic. The traffic and the trucks are never going to go away. Increased traffic is inevitable as populations grow and more and more condos are built in the area. Something clearly needs to be done to alleviate it, and it needs to be done as soon as possible. The longer we wait, the more it will cost us. I say “us” because we are all taxpayers in one way or another, and that’s where most of TransLink’s money comes from. We were told at a McBride-Sapperton Residents’ Association meeting that when Option A was first proposed in 2004, its estimated cost was $55 million. It is now over $175 million. That means it’s more than tripled in only six years. We can’t afford to wait much longer. The residents’ association wants to sit back and wait until funding can be found to do the entire North Fraser Perimeter Road can be done at once. Realistically, this will probably not happen. Let’s do what we can, when we can, and work towards making things as good as we can. Half measures and “cheaping out” will only cost us down the road. We can’t afford the ”least contentious” or the cheapest or prettiest option. As taxpayers we need to demand the best, most efficient option. Sometimes sacrifices must be made for the greater good. We’re not overly happy about possibly moving from the house we’ve spent the last 10 years making our home, but we recognize and understand the need for change and improvement of our roadways. We wholly support Option B.
Well, unless the Gang of 13 agrees to work within a caucus environment, the party has no chance of moving forward. Even if they do come back to the fold, the relations between them and their caucus colleagues have become toxic. One reason for the visceral relations is that a male-dominated minority has forced a woman leader, who was supported by the majority, from office. Nine of the 13 dissidents are male. You can imagine the anger over this development that is now seething in certain quarters of the NDP, which was supposed to be a champion of feminist causes. To be sure, James’ leadership was dogged by questions about her ability to lead and her ability to win. But none of her

detractors could point to any current evidence that there was no way she could win the next election. Poll after poll has the NDP well ahead of the B.C. Liberals. While James has long had trouble with her approval ratings, so did Gordon Campbell while he was winning three elections. In the end, this was all about a faction of the NDP unwilling to give up control of the party and resisting James’ attempts to modernize it and move it more to the political centre. The shame of this is that it may well cost the NDP the next election. There is no doubt many people out there who do not want to give the B.C. Liberals a fourth term are now forced to look in
despair at an alternative that is broken and, for now anyways, somewhat discredited. James may well have won the next election, as the centre-right coalition of the B.C. Liberals is showing its own signs of cracking. But now we’ll never know for sure. The NDP now has to go through a potentially agonizing leadership race of its own. How’s this for a scenario: the next B.C. Liberal leader calls a snap election in March, catching the NDP either leaderless or engulfed with bitter internal strife. If the NDP loses the next vote, the party can look back at the minority-led coup that took out its first female leader as it searches for the reason for the loss. Five arrested in city raid, firearm and drugs seized Five people were arrested on Dec. 2 after the New Westminster Police Service executed search warrants on two separate suites at 1210 Cameron St. The warrants were conducted by the street crime
unit after a six-week long project was launched to address numerous citizen complaints regarding drug dealing and suspicious activities in the area. During the search, a firearm, along with a quan-
tity of suspected drugs was seized. The five people in custody are facing a variety of charges, including firearms offences, and further charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.

can contribute to annual variations in energy consumed and emissions released. “The increase in electrical consumption from 2007 to 2009 was most significant in the three facilities: Canada Games Pool, police building and city hall,” said the report. “The increase in consumption at city hall is likely attributed to the completion of renovations and occupation of the east wing of the second floor.” From 2007 to 2009, natural gas consumption dropped at Canada Games Pool, Moody Park Arena and Queen’s Park Arena. The city is attributing this to the installation of two new energy-efficient boilers at the Canada Games Pool and the replacement of the brine pumps at the arenas with high-efficiency motors. According to the report, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the fleet vehicle sector both increased by four per cent or 58 tonnes from 2007 to 2009. While the consumption of gasoline fueled vehicles increased just slightly, diesel fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions increased by six per cent – something attributed to the addition of clean green pickup, street cleaning preparations for the Olympics and snow removal during the winter of 2008/2009. The staff report states that it will “need to take a more aggressive role” in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to meet the city’s10-year target. It noted that new facilities and vehicles often add to the corporate fuel/energy consumption, asso-
ciated emissions and energy cots. “We are going to be adding services,” Cote said of future buildings such as the civic centre. “That is going to make it harder to reach. Just because it is a difficult task, we shouldn’t be throwing our hands up in the air.” According to Cote, Canada Games Pool provides the city with its largest opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “If that pool is in the future renovated, retrofitted or replaced, there is opportunities for huge energy savings there,” he said. “That’s probably going to be the biggest opportunity to reduce on the building sector.” Opportunities for improvements also exist at the New Westminster Police Service building on Columbia Street, which has a boiler replacement proposed in its 2011 capital budget. The city notes that its vehicle fleet sector has had the most prominent influence on the increase in total emissions in the past three years, but it is committed to reducing this sector’s influence on greenhouse gases and energy consumption by doing a comprehensive emissions reduction and fleet review in 2011. “This initiative will help to gather information on vehicle use and driver behaviour, determine vehicle kilometres traveled by all vehicles tracked by the city’s fueling system and develop a vehicle procurement model that identifies the priorities and weighting system for purchases of specific vehicle classes,” said the report.

New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service’s newest truck will soon embark on its long trip to the Royal City. Fire chief Tim Armstrong recently visited Appleton, Wisconsin where the vehicle is being built. “I signed off on it yesterday,” he told The Record Wednesday. “It will be on the road heading to Calgary where it gets all its equipment.” Last year, city council approved the fire department’s request for a new aerial platform unit. The 100-foot aerial platform truck will replace the department’s existing ladder truck. Although the vehicle is built in Wisconsin, it will be equipped with firefighting gear in Calgary. Mechanics who will be working on the truck will go to Calgary to get some training for working on the vehicle. Armstrong estimates that the truck will be rolling into the Royal City just before Christmas. Firefighters who will be driving the vehicle will begin in-service training in January, and the vehicle should be on the road by late January or early February 2011. “This is pretty complex,” he said. “There will be a fair bit of training.” Earlier this year, Armstrong told The Record that the fire department had been negotiating with two suppliers to see which one could offer the “best bang for the taxpayers’ buck” in terms of issues such as delivery time for the vehicle that will cost about $1.1 million. The U.S.-based Pierce plant was selected because it could build the truck in a much shorter time. Armstrong’s goal is to create a new and more consistent look for the fire department’s fleet, starting with the new aerial platform unit and continuing as other engine trucks are due for replacement.

“The Liberals must be sleeping soundly these days,” he said. “This has been handed to them on a golden platter.” Puchmayr said it’s now time for the NDP to do some soul searching and healing. “I am too emotional to comment on where we go from here,” he said Monday. Black said the NDP has to form government in order to bring about positive change in B.C. She said she’ll get over her sadness and do what she can to rebuild the party. “There’s things that still need to be dealt with. What is the tried and true process of caucus solidarity has been badly, badly eroded,” she said. “There is a lot of work to be done.” Black said that “without a doubt” this has been the toughest thing she’s ever had to deal with politically because it wasn’t issue oriented and because she didn’t understand the motivation of some of her colleagues. “This was not on a policy, on an issue, on a value we did not share,” she said. “It made it very difficult to understand.” Black appreciates the calls she’s received from community members in response to the NDP leadership issue. “I want to thank the people in New Westminster who have contacted me,” she said. “They haven’t all been on the same page, but they have all been respectful. I do appreciate that. The vast majority were supportive of Carole James, not all.”

With nearly a dozen tuxedo and/or wedding gown stores located along a single stretch of Columbia Street, New Westminster has a well deserved reputation for being a good place to get suited up before getting hitched. While it may not be a particularly good idea if you’re a superstitious sort, odds are good you could probably also even find a secondhand wedding dress in one of the many thrift shops found within the city’s seven square miles. The stigma surrounding shopping at thrift shops isn’t nearly what it used to be in these tough economic times, and for many people it is downright ridiculous to pay top dollar for, say, a pair of jeans when you can pick up ones just like it already broken in for a fraction of the price. Shopping at thrift shops is often only slightly more expensive than shoplifting and, if you choose to go to one connected with a charity, you can even feel good about buying things. Another benefit is you can practice a catchand-release style of shopping. If you buy it and later decide you don’t like it after all, simply set it free again by donating it back. “We really like to be able to feel like we’re helping out the community and that we are making a difference in New West,” said SPCA Thrift Mart manager Roni-Lyn Sanders, who has been helping local residents discover tossed and found treasures for nearly 20 years. “We also raised almost $30,000 for the SPCA this past year, and that’s something I’m really proud of.” Although preventing cruelty to animals is one of her motivating factors for going to work in the morning, Sanders said her 12th Street store also takes on other charitable causes. The local fire rescue service often send people who’ve lost their belongings in a fire to the store to receive an even bigger discount, and currently there is also a bin outside her store set up to accept warm, warm winter coats for the homeless and needy families. “We’re hoping to get between 5,500 to 8,000 coats for people, and we’ll be accepting donation up until mid December,” said Sanders. “We do this every year before the winter kicks in. What we’re looking for is ones that can help keep people warm, so not raincoats or light jackets.” Pets and people needing help to stay warm are just one of many pet projects local thrift stores support. You could also choose to do your shopping at Thrift Mart’s next door neighbour, Mega Thrift, which helps support Western Society for Children, a charity that aids families with disabled children. Other second-hand shopping options supporting good causes include the uptown Treasure Chest Thrift Store (supporting the Canadian Mental Health Association), the Saint Barnabus Church Thrift Shop, the New To You in Sapperton (with all proceeds going to the Royal Columbia Hospital) and the massive Salvation Army store downtown in the renovated B.C. Electric building.
Not all have a charitable angle to them, of course. Haircut fundraiser helps ’Bellies team AROUND TOWN

ew Westminster Salmonbellies are hoping people will get their hair cut for Christmas. The high school aged team is heading to Florida for the 2011 Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions from Dec. 31 to Jan. 2. On Sunday, Dec. 12, the team is holding a fundraiser at Zahra’s Ultimate Hair Design from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “The kids are going to come in and get their Christmas haircuts. It is $15 a haircut,” said Dave MacGrotty of the Salmonbellies. “It’s Christmastime – it’s almost a necessity to get a haircut. You are going to spend money on a haircut anyway.” Community members are invited to support the team by attending the fundraiser. Fifty per cent of the proceeds go directly to minor lacrosse to help the team compete in the national championships in Florida.
“It is the same tournament the New West teams have won twice,” MacGrotty said. “They are going back for a threepeat.” The New Westminster Salmonbellies high school team consists of players up to 18 years of age. Fourteen of the 16 players attend New Westminster Secondary, and three were on the 2008 team that won the tournament. Zahra’s Ultimate Hair Design is located at 446 Sixth St. “She (Zahra) is very community minded and when I approached her and her business partner, Matthew, they were thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of this fundraiser,” MacGrotty said. “They went as far as booking a Sunday, they usually aren’t open, to accommodate the event.” Ilija Gajic, a member of the New Westminster Senior Salmonbellies that went to this year’s Mann Cup, is the team’s head coach.

road construction on East Columbia Street and the awareness that Thrifty Foods will be opening in Sapperton in the future. “I am going with no bread anymore,” Fabio said. “I am sticking with the cakes and pastries.” Starting Jan. 1, Fabio will focus on what Bella’s specializes in – cakes and pastries – and will offer and an expanded selection of desserts. “The response has been very understanding,” he said. “The bread sales are mostly residents of the area.” Fabio, said the shop already loses money on bread. With Thrifty Foods set to locate in the Brewery District development, he said their prices would be hard to beat. Fabio is hoping he can garner the title of New Westminster’s Cake Boss, by focusing on sweets. “Instead of starting at 3:30 in the morning, I can start at 6 a.m.,” he added. “That’s a big difference. My wife is very happy about that.”

Kudos to New Westminster chartered accounting students, Daniel Chow (Manning Elliott LLP) and Xin Liu (Herd & Co.), who recently passed the national Uniform Evaluation. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of B.C. and the CA School of Business recently announced that a total of 503 B.C. writers successfully completed the exam, which was written over three days in September. To become a chartered accountant, students must complete rigorous course work, pass the evaluation, and work for 30 months in a chartered accounting firm.

A Victorian Christmas at Irving House is the topic of this month’s New Westminster Historical Society evening. The presentation is being held Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the New Westminster Public

A press release notes that many aspects of the Christmas season that were adapted or created during the Victorian Age set the standard for a large number of festivities that followed. This particular period of our history emphasized characteristics of the holiday season, and out of this age came many of the traditional pieces that are part of Christmas celebrations today. This presentation will also cover the popular exhibit of a Victorian Christmas at Irving House in New Westminster, an exhibit that was developed in the mid 1970s. Since then, Russell Roberts and Colleen Winton have been carrying on their Christmas in Wales traditions on larger stages – and this year is no exception. The husband-and-wife acting duo from New Westminster is presenting Christmas in Wales on Sunday, Dec. 19 at Mount Seymour United Church in North Vancouver. They’ll offer up selections from the Dylan Thomas classic A Child’s Christmas in Wales, set to an original score by Vancouver composer Brian Tate. Tate – a well-known jazz musician who’s also the music minister at Mount Seymour United – will accompany them on piano. The readings will be interspersed with seasonal readings and songs from other musicians and a variety of friends, including the couple’s younger son, Gower Roberts. (Their elder son, Sayer, wasn’t available – Colleen laughs that they didn’t book him in time, and he found another engagement.) Mount Seymour United Church is at 1200 Parkgate Ave. Tickets are available at the door - $15 for adults and $5 for youth. And Colleen notes that there’s good news for parents – all children are welcome, even infants in arms, since the church has a crying room available.

The music therapy program at Queen’s Park Care Centre is giving folks another chance to support its efforts and get some unique musical instruments. Each Friday, a group of the residents meet in the centre’s music therapy room to make musical instruments from kits ordered from Minnesota. The group recently held a sale of the musical instruments and music boxes, but Mother Nature didn’t cooperate. “It was snowing, snowing, snowing all day,” said Jeremie Tucker, music therapist. “The snow completely wrecked the sale. Nobody came in.” The group is holding another sale on Dec. 9 and 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the lobby of Queen’s Park Care Centre. Banjos, oval harps, wood and cigar box ukuleles, lap harps, strumblies, a 77-string dulcimer, traditional dulcimers, copper wind chimes and music boxes are among the items that will be for sale. Last year’s sale netted $1,300 for the program, but the group made less than one-third of that total at the Nov. 25 and 26 event. “It was really sad,” Tucker said. “We had a beautiful display.” Items will be offered at “substantial discounts” at the upcoming sale, in recognition of the current economic conditions. The seniors have continued making instruments so even more items will be available at the next sale. “They are nice things – I want them to have a home,” Tucker said. Members of the group, including some people in their 90s, enjoy the experience of making musical instruments and the camaraderie they share. Funds raised at the sale are used to purchase more kits for the program. The musical instrument making meetings start and end with singing – and participants make some beauti-
ful instruments in between. The music therapy department offers music on all three floors of Queen’s Park Care Centre, including its extended care, hospice and adult day units. Queen’s Park Care Centre is located at 315 McBride Blvd. The parking lot has pay parking.

Orchestra, dancers team up for concert Christmas wouldn’t be complete without this holiday tradition in New Westminster. The New Westminster Symphony Orchestra and the Richmond Academy of Dance are holding their 11th annual festive concert at the Massey Theatre on Friday, Dec. 10. “Once again, it will be an evening of beautiful music and dance,” says New Westminster arts promoter Tony Antonias. This year’s concert features principal dancer Dana Lanz-Ross, along with Fiona Drewbrook, in the timeless roles of the Nutcracker Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy. They will be joined by dozens of talented young dancers from the Richmond Academy of Dance, all in dazzling costumes. Orchestra conductor Jin “Jack” Zhang and Richmond Academy of Dance directors Annette and Jozef Jakubowski and Heather Joosten-Fair have arranged a program of music, song and dance full of holiday favourites. Concert highlights include A Carol Festival, Sleigh Ride, a Christmas reading for children by local actor Russell Roberts, and everyone’s favourite selections from The Nutcracker. “There is plenty for all ages at this wonderful annual concert,” Antonias says. Well-known vet dies A man known for his care of local animals and for his contributions to his church has passed away. Dr. John Waller, 82, served the communitiesofNewWestminster and Burnaby as a veterinarian for more than 30 years. He also spent countless hours contributing to his church. “As the president of the Federation of Independent Schools Association, he worked tirelessly to obtain government funding for independent schools, and he was honoured to receive the “Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice” medal from Pope Paul VI for his achievements,” according to an obituary. “He was a founding member of Corpus Christi College on the UBC campus, and he served on St. Mary’s Hospital board in New Westminster for many years. He was an inspirational leader to all who knew him. His family is especially thankful for the constant love,
support and guidance he so willingly shared throughout his life. Waller died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He is survived by wife of 56 years, Barbara, as well as children Angela, Susan, Christopher, Anthony, Paul, Sarah and Andrew and their spouses and 18 grandchildren. Waller was predeceased by his parents Fred and Molly Waller and his brother Tom. He will be greatly missed by his brother Richard and family in England. Prayers are being held on Thursday, Dec. 9th at 7 p.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 9387 Holmes St. in Burnaby. Anyone wishing to can make a donation to the Westwood Education Fund (westbrookedu fund.ca), the St. Mary’s Health Foundation (saintmaryshealth foundation.com) or a charity of your choice.

O
ur feet withstand incredible amounts of force during exercise, but unless they’re in pain, the feet are easily neglected. Not all fitness buffs focus on their feet when their real focus is on upping cardio endurance or making the biceps bigger. This is unfortunate, because a proper pair of shoes prevents damage to the feet that could cause chronic pain and difficulty when exercising. Consider these four aspects of shoe selection: ◗ Wear pattern: If you have an old pair of running shoes hanging around, you can inspect them to learn about your personal biomechanics. (If you don’t have old shoes, an alternative is to inspect the prints you leave after walking around with wet feet.) If the old shoes are worn on the inside, near your arch, this means you pronate
your feet. If they are worn on the outside, this means you under-pronate your feet. If you fit into the former, you’ll need a stability shoe with lots of medial support. If you fit into the latter – or somewhere between the two categories – neutral shoes will do the trick. High arches require neutral shoes with added cushioning. ◗ Type: Shoe companies aren’t trying to make more money by offering multiple types of exercise shoes; running shoes really are designed for running, and cross trainers really are for – you guessed it – cross training. Running feet hit the ground in a heel-to-toe pattern, for instance; running shoes are designed with extra support where it’s needed, so the force of weight transfer from the body to the feet is properly absorbed and dispersed. Cross-training shoes are designed to provide proper foot support for gym workouts, aerobics and shorter durations of running. ◗ Fit: Having the right shoe type means nothing if you don’t have the right fit; an improper fitting shoe will not provide the support needed. You might also
have to sacrifice the exact style of shoe you want to ensure the best possible fit. When looking at a pair of shoes, try on three sizes – your regular size, one size up and one down – and don’t rush to make a purchase. Give yourself a minute or two to see if your feet feel neutral in the shoe; the feet should not roll to either side when you walk. Shoes should be snug around the middle of the feet and have onehalf to three-quarters of a thumb width between your toes and the toe-end of the shoe. ◗ Replacement: Old, worn out shoes stop giving proper foot support. Replace your workout shoes every eight to 12 months – eight if you exercise daily and 12 if you exercise less frequently. Runners can also know when to replace their shoes based on distance – a great reason for keeping a running log. Runners need new shoes every 650 to 1,000 or so kilometres. The first black female athlete to represent Canada in international competition has been chosen to be inducted into the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame. Barbara Howard, 90-years young, represented Canada at the 1938 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Sydney, Australia as a 17-year-old sprinter and although not coming home with a medal in the 100 yards, she did return with two relay medals, a silver and a bronze. She had entered the Games as the fastest woman sprinter in the Empire after recording an 11.2 second time in the 100 at the Western BEG trials. She finished fifth in the BEG final. The voyage to reach Sydney took one month aboard a ship. Joining Howard in the athlete category is hockey player Karl Alzner and boxer Des Archer. The Burnaby Sport’s Hall of Fame induction dinner is being held Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Burnaby Firefighters Hall at Metrotown. Alzner, now playing in the NHL with the Washington Capitals, won two World Junior hockey championship gold medals with Team Canada, the last as team captain. He was also named the Western Hockey League’s top player and Canadian Hockey League top defenceman in 2008. Alzner was drafted in the first round, fifth overall, by the Capitals in 2007. Archer was one of the finest boxers ever produced in Canada. Coached in Burnaby by sports hall of fame member Harry Twist, Archer won just about every amateur title out there, including Diamond Belt, Golden Gloves and a Canadian championship. Overall, he won more than 50 fights. Being inducted into the Builder category are Burnaby Winter Club orga-
nizer Lynn Mason and renowned sport physiotherapist Alex McKechnie. As a curler, Mason took his rink to both provincial and Canadian playoffs. As an organizer, Mason was a member of the committee that organized the first 75and 80-plus hockey tournament, believed to be the first such tournament of its kind in the world. McKechnie has served as physiotherapist for SFU’s NAIA teams, Vancouver Whitecaps NASL teams, and the 1976 Canadian Olympic soccer team. He opened a private practice in Burnaby in 1977 specializing in orthopaedics and sports medicine and became so well known that many of his clients included star European soccer and NBA players. Being inducted into the Coaches category are boxing’s Manny Sobral and soccer’s Frank Palmieri. Co-founder of the North Burnaby boxing club, Sobral has coached his athletes to more than 20 championships, including B.C. Bronze, Silver and Golden Gloves titles, as well as provincial and Canadian championships. As a professional boxer, he established a record of 29 wins and just two losses. Palmieri has been a volunteer soccer coach in Burnaby for close to 30 years. During his coaching career, his teams have won nine Coastal and Provincial Cups and he led two teams to national championships. Being inducted into the Team category is the 2005 under-17 Burnaby Royals soccer team, which captured the coastal, provincial and national u-18 club championships. New Westminster teen third at junior racquetball worlds Anthony Schonberger won a bronze medal at the 22nd annual world junior racquetball championships in Los Angeles last month. The New Westminster Secondary School student shared one of four third-place medals in doubles for Canada with Quebec partner Samuel Murray in the boys’ under-16 competition. Schonberger finished ninth overall in the junior singles. Schnonberger was the only player from B.C. selected to Canada’s 12member national junior team. The Canadian team won a total of
seven medals at the worlds, placing fourth overall behind overall champion the United States, with 15 total medals, including five gold. Mexico and Bolivia finished second and third with 11 and nine medals, respectively. Canada’s Pedro Castro won a silver medal in u-18 men’s singles. Castro lost the gold to USA’s Taylor Knoth 15-5, 15-8. Castro, along with partner Jamie Slamko of Edmonton, also won a bronze medal in doubles. Frédérique Lambert of Quebec also won an individual silver medal,
placing second in the u-18 girls’ singles. Lambert was beaten 15-6, 15-4 in the championship final by American double gold-medallist Aubrey O’Brien. U-14 team member Coby Iwaasa of Alberta was Canada’s other double-medallist, winning bronze in both the singles and doubles. In u-14 girls’ doubles, Michelle Morissette of Quebec and Mckenzie Brayley of Calgary won a bronze medal. Burnaby will play host to the Canadian junior nationals at Rev’s on Holdom April 24 to 30.

St. Thomas More middle hitter Pamela Ho was named to the second all-star team at the B.C. high school AA girls’ volleyball championships in Kamloops last week. Ho had eight kills and no errors after the first game in STM’s 2-0 win over Holy Cross that placed them ninth overall. “Pam was outstanding. We just had momentum,”
said STM head coach Danielle Bohemier. After finishing second in their pool with No. 1 seed and eventual fourthplace finishing Brentwood College, STM was beaten in three sets by Mennonite Educational Institute in the championship crossover match. The loss put the Knights on the consolation side of the draw and a best possible ninth-place finish. “Our expectations are fairly high but we don’t
control what happens in that crossover round, but we wouldn’t have had an easy draw,” Bohemier admitted. The Knights rallied back, knocking off College Heights and host Sa-Hali in straight sets before getting a second chance at redemption against Holy Cross in the final placement game. STM took that game 25-21, 25-18 to finish in ninth place. “It was nice to see Holy Cross, … they had beaten
us twice in the season,” Bohemier said. Senior power hitter Sarah Hughes had a strong championship tournament. Claire Power, Ho and younger sister Megan Ho, a Grade 9 callup to the provincials, also had strong defensive outings for the Knights. Surrey Christian defeated No. 6-ranked Lambrick Park 22-25, 25-10, 25-18, 25-17 in the championship final.

NamNguyenofBurnaby won a bronze medal at the Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenge in Misssissauga, Ont. Dec. 4. The North Shore Winter Club skater was unable to match his winning 159point performance in the junior men’s program at the B.C. sectionals in November, garnering just 143.14 points despite a second-best overall free skate. Samuel Angers of Quebec won the event, coming from fifth place after the short skate to post a 103.18 score in the long program. Pollux Yeung of Burnaby placed 17th in the junior
men’s division. Sectional runner-up Andrew Lum of Burnaby wound up 11th in the senior men’s skate. Lum was ninth after the short program. Moscrop grad Nicole Orford teamed up with partner Thomas Williams to win the junior dance with a 120.59 score. Qwynn Dalmer and Sara Aghai finished ninth. Madeline Edwards and Zhao Kai Pang of Burnaby won the novice dance with an 89.37 total score. Cariboo Hill student Timothy Lum placed second with dance partner Noa Bruser. Burnaby’s Caelen Dalmer and Shane Firus finished fourth in the novice dance.
In the pre-novice men’s division, Adonis Wong of Burnaby also finished fourth behind three Quebec skaters. Ajax Wong placed 21st overall. Burnaby’s Kitty Qian had a top-10 finish in the junior women’s division, placing ninth with a 104.44 total, nearly four points better than her fourthplace-finishing score at the sectionals. B.C. sectional gold-medalist Janet Truong failed to match her earlier form, finishing 28th overall in the junior women’s division. Rika Inoda also had a disappointing free skate, tumbling to 22nd-place in the senior women’s after sitting seventh following the short program.
Three on all-academic grid team James McKenzie was named B.C. high school football’s academic player of the year. Besides his prowess in the classroom, the St. Thomas More Knights fullback/ linebacker was second overall in team tackles with 73 this season, including two
quarterback sacks. Also earning scholarships were New Westminster Hyacks lineman Nick Adomat and STM wide receiver/defensive back Ross Hilliam. Hilliam had 58 tackles on defence and was runner-up in overall receiving with 621 yards.

The Northwest Giants held on to first place in an ever-increasingly competitive B.C. major midget hockey league. The Giants gave up a temporary share of top spot in the 11-team loop, following a 6-4 loss to the second-place Cariboo Cougars in Prince George last Saturday. But the regional elite team, made up of players from the Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore, regained the lead with a 5-2 win in the Sunday matchup. League scoring leader Alex Kerfoot led the Giants with a six-point weekend, including the eventual game-winning goal and three helpers in the win Sunday. Sam Reinhart shared the glory Sunday, tallying two goals and two assists. In the weekend series opener, the Giants held a 4-2 lead early in the middle period but couldn’t hold onto the lead. “Obviously, every day, every shift is very important right now,” said Giants first-year head coach Todd
Harkness. “But (the team) gets it and they want to win.” That fact was evident when early in November, the Giants slipped from first to third place after dropping a tight weekend series to the Greater Vancouver Canadians. Since then, the Giants are unbeaten, working their way back into first place, fashioning a 5-0-3 record along the way. In Prince George, the Giants showed that they are more than just a team of skill and speed in a chippy Game 2 that saw 164 minutes of penalties blown down. “The whole team stepped up. We’re in first place, and we were not going to get pushed around,” Harkness said. On Saturday, the Giants found themselves in some penalty trouble and also unable to capitalize when they had the man advantage. But the team made the necessary adjustments in the latter contest, said Harkness, changes that will have to continue to be improved on to keep pace with what is shaping up to be the most competitive

Born in Calgary, Alberta on December 24th, 1916, Albert (Al) passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 28, 2010 after a short battle with cancer. Al was predeceased by his wife Norma and many siblings. Al was a tremendous husband, father and friend and is survived by his 2 daughters, Yvonne Atkinson (George), Lynne Grohman; 3 grandchildren, Judi-Ann, Norman, Daniel; and 7 great-grandchildren. His companion over the past 11 years, Jo Bloom, will also miss him very much. Al was a veteran of the 2nd World War and was also very active in his communities (Burnaby & Coquitlam) in various volunteer capacities. He was recognized for his long time service with the Victim Assistance program in Burnaby by the RCMP. Al and Norma took in and fostered many young adults over the years. One young man, Art Pearson, was welcomed into the family as their son. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to be held on Saturday, Dec 11th, 2010 at 2pm at Como Lake United Church, 535 Marmont St., Coquitlam, BC.
