Testing is underway to get more information about contamination at the future Westminster Pier Park. A Nov. 8 report to council states that remediation of contaminated soils at Westminster Pier Park has been completed, but recent groundwater testing in the area around Fourth Street has identified a higher concentration of contaminants than what was previously known. The highest concentrations of these contaminants are located a short distance north of the park boundary, within the railway corridor. “It’s in liquid form, but the molecular structure is heavier than the water, so it does not sink,” said Jim Lowrie, the city’s director of engineering services. “Most fuels will float in water -– this is a denser product. It is still in liquid form.” The contaminants have been labelled a “toxic blob” by some. Lowrie said the contaminated groundwater is located in an area that’s very deep and close to the railways. Testing that’s underway will determine the extent of the contamination and how to remediate it. “They are drilling this week,” he said. “They are drilling a couple more test holes immediately north of the rails on Front Street.” Lowrie said the city hopes to have the test results within a few weeks. The results of those tests will determine whether the contamination is from an offsite source or is a “localized area” in the railway corridor. If the contamination is located in the railway corridor, it could indicate that the contamination resulted from sort of railway operation, such as a spill or railway maintenance activities. “As part of the remediation process, a human health and ecological risk assessment study will be undertaken to assess the degree of exposure to humans and environment in order that appropriate mitigation measures may be implemented,” stated a recent staff report ◗Drilling Page 4

Royal City residents who’ve been wondering about what was going on behind all the papered-off windows at the old Quayside market finally got a chance to find out on Saturday. River Market community services manager Julie Ramirez estimates that at least 1,000 people stopped by for the grand opening of Donald’s Market, the second tenant of the revamped market to open its doors for business. People were also able to explore the rest of the 70,000-square-foot building to check out the new artwork and renovations to get an idea of what is coming up next as well. “It went really, really well,” said Ramirez. “The place was just a flurry of activity all day long, and it was great to see such a strong turnout.” Mayor Wayne Wright was on hand to cut the ribbon for the 9 a.m. opening ceremo-

Early arrivals were presented with special buttons with the name of a food item on them, with the idea of it being a challenge for shoppers to then cook a meal using the named food item as an ingredient. Along with people simply curious to see what the inside of the renovated space now looks like now after years of being closed to the public, many were also likely drawn by

the promise of a free bag of groceries for the first 100 customers through Donald’s doors, a promotion they intend to continue every Saturday until Christmas. Parking fees will also be reimbursed for every customer who spends $15 or more at the store. While the Vancouver Circus School and Donald’s Market are the only two businesses currently operating in the waterfront landmark building, others soon will be. Confirmed tenants getting ready to launch include Make, a commercial kitchen available for rent for aspiring bulk food manufacturers, the Great Wall Tea Company, and Tiny, a gourmet food outlet that packages local specialty foods in small-sized portions. A new location for Wild Rice, a trendy Gastown restaurant specializing in Chinese food, has not yet been confirmed as had been previously reported. “Things are pushing forward but nothing has been finalized yet,” said Wild Rice manager Andrew Wong, who added that an expansion into NewPort Village in Port Moody or the Morgan Creek development in South Surrey are also being considered. “River Market fits a lot of the criteria for what we’ve been searching for, but right now we are still only a potential (tenant).” www.twitter.com/flematic

to council. “Additional groundwater sampling is currently underway to determine if the contaminants are mobile, and to identify the potential source of the contamination.” The presence of chlorinated solvents in the form of dense non-aqueous phase liquid – dubbed a toxic blob – means the whole site is now classified as a high-risk site, rather than a low-risk site. An official from the province’s Ministry of Environment has stressed that the contamination is eight metres below the surface and doesn’t appear to be progressing out to the Fraser River. Remediation of the site is following an “independent remediation” process, as permitted by the Ministry of Environment.

Silence would be irresponsible Dear Editor:

Re: Op-ed misses the point, The Record, Nov. 20 Letter writer David H. Brett resorts to unsubstantiated conspiracy theory in his confused effort to abuse your editorial. (Don’t confuse criticism with anti-Semitism, The Record, Nov. 13). All I can gather from his rant is that he exemplifies the practice of equating criticism with antiSemitism. He presents no example of what he sees as “abhorrent hate-speech.” Is he referring to growing world condemnation of the hurtful Israeli blockade of Gaza or Israel’s refusal to suspend Jewish home construction in disputed territories? If so, what does a state’s ethnicity or religion have to do with political-military actions? Mr. Brett suggests, in effect, that Canadians have no right to speak out about policies that threaten to spread the horror of war if

those policies are pursued by a Jewish state. He is wrong. Not only are we free to speak, but in some cases we would be irresponsible not to. Accusing The Record or any Canadians of inability to appreciate the difference between anti-Semitism and legitimate criticism is both insulting and dangerous. Tony Eberts, New Westminster

blatant atrocities against the Palestinian people, which include the indiscriminate bombing of civilians. The arrogant, illegal jackboot action of Israeli commandos and detention of ships on the high seas with supplies such as medicine for the Palestinian people are, in my opinion, reprehensible and indefensible. The continuing occupation and settling on Palestinian land, condemned by the United Nations and opposed even by the United States, is at the centre of the conflict. There is no doubt that those who support the actions of Israel will continue to label any criticism as anti-Semitic. To dismiss any criticism of these actions as racism or to suggest that the editorial board of The Record is specious or contaminated by anti-Semitism because it questions the possible problem of the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism stifling legitimate criticism begs the comment: “Methinks [thou] doth protest too much.” Perhaps it is worth remembering Reverend Niemoller’s poignant statement regarding free speech and the duty to speak out, in reference to the Nazi occupation and inhumane treatment of people during the Second World War: First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not

speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me. Some of my Jewish friends are reluctant to criticize Israel other than around the kitchen table, so to speak. There are many others in the state of Israel who are critical of their country’s policies. Are their opinions also racist? Like others, I, too, see the editorial as a reasoned expression of concern for free speech. Bill Zander, New Westminster

Lying by omission?

Re: Don’t confuse criticism with antiSemitism, The Record, Nov. 13 You are quite correct when you write: “But if people are left scared to speak out next time Israel bombs civilians, for fear of being labelled anti-Semitic, then the rhetoric has served its purpose, and there’s no need to violate the charter because we’ll be censoring ourselves.” The trouble comes not in speaking out, but in leaving out. If Canadians criticize Israel’s bombing of civilians -- but without discussing why she did so, or what her specific goals were, or whether the civilians bombed were collateral damage or intentionally struck, or, when the latter, whether those bombed were specific targeted persons, targeted for what they had previously done with respect to Israeli civilians and/or what they were planning to do in the future – then “speaking out” against Israel is merely lying by omission. The group includes rural MLAs such as Katrine Conroy and Norm MacDonald from the Kootenays, Nicholas Simons and Gary Coons from the Coast, Harry Lali from the Interior, Jenny Kwan and Guy Gentner from Metro Vancouver, and Island MLAs Lana Popham, Doug Routley, Leonard Krog and Claire Trevena. Some of these folks simply can’t get over the fact that James fired Cariboo MLA Bob Simpson for insubordination. It is quite conceivable a number of them may well decide to join Simpson in exile. The level of animosity to James varies among this rump group. But this problem extends beyond James and now pits some MLAs against others.

I was an eyewitness to this deterioration of caucus relations during that council meeting. On my way out of the room after James’ speech I found myself suddenly in a near-physical encounter between Simons and fellow NDP MLA Mable Elmore (Vancouver Kensington). Simons was leaning into Elmore, jabbing his finger at her, and loudly saying over and over again: “Do you want to fight?” He suddenly saw me, and slunk away. Oh, what a happy bunch! The magnitude of this problem for the NDP cannot be underestimated. At some point, James is going to have to take action. I can’t see all 12 leaving, but it is conceivable Conroy, Popham, Routley, Simons and MacDonald

(they appear to be the angriest as well as being the closest to Simpson) leave and sit with their one-time colleague from the Cariboo. Again, all it takes is for three of them to join Simpson to gain official party status. B.C. has long been a two-party province, with a third party popping up with scant representation from time to time. But we may be on the verge of a huge political re-alignment. The two dominant parties are fracturing right now and if they don’t end their internal strife (and the NDP has the biggest problem on this front right now), they’re going to find one or two new competitors suddenly appearing on the scene. City: Repair it or else property owner to demolish or repair the building within 180 days of receiving the order. The order also specified the work that must be done. An Oct. 18 staff report to council stated that the owner’s legal counsel has indicated his client objects to the remedial action order on a number of grounds. One issue is the requirement to provide connections from wood floor joists to wood and steel support beams for lateral restraint, something the owner felt went beyond repairing the building. According to the staff report, the city issued an exploratory building permit to the owner in July. While it appears that some of the exploratory work may have started, city staff viewed the property and didn’t see any sign that work was being done. “The city has been concerned about safety of the building at 410 Columbia St. since 2007,” said the

The City of New Westminster wants a Columbia Street building repaired or demolished. Council has directed the city’s solicitors to pursue a Supreme Court Order compelling the owner of 410 Columbia St. to comply with the city’s building bylaw, the B.C. Building Code and a remedial action order that was issued in March. This action will be done if the owner fails to initiate “prompt and substantive actions” to comply with the remedial action order. “It’s with the city’s solicitors,” said Blair Fryer, the city’s manager of communications. “They are currently filing orders for Supreme Court proceedings against the owners of 410 Columbia St.” At a special hearing in March, city council approved a remedial action order that required the

staff report. “From that time, the city has pursued various measures to assess the building and to get the owner to make it safe, leading up to council issue the remedial action order in March 2010. Although the owner has retained consultants and indicated repairs and would be implemented on a number of occasions, the owner has not proceeded to make any repairs. It is very likely the city will need to pursue enforcement measures to get the owner to implement the required repairs.”

The mystery of the disappearing Seaforth mace has a happy ending. On the night of Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m., the New Westminster police recovered the historic mace, which had been stolen from a car parked at

Queen’s Park Arena on Oct. 29. The mace was returned to the Seaforth Highlanders and according to a press release from the police service, there was no damage to the mace. The 100-year-old mace, which was approximately five feet tall and made of brass and Malacca cane, had been

missing for almost three weeks after it was stolen, along with a car, from the Queen’s Park Arena parking lot. Police also recovered the vehicle the mace was in and investigators are going through the recovered car to see if they can find any evidence as to who stole both the car and the mace.

City biz takes racing to new heights Royal City company to bring adventure racing to SFU and Burnaby Mountain BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

Come May 28, 2011, more than 400 competitors will be kayaking, orienteering, mountain biking and trekking their way up, around and down Burnaby Mountain at SFU in the 32nd edition of the Atmosphere Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race (MOMAR). MOMAR is a New Westminster-based company that has organized 31 other events, mostly on Vancouver Island and in Squamish, and this is their first foray into the potentially lucrative Lower Mainland market. The off-road multisport race will require individuals or teams to mountain bike, kayak, orienteer and trek through a series of checkpoints. Each race has two course options: a 30 km sport course or a 50 km enduro course. “We’ve been organizing events for the past 12 years and we are one of the largest adventure racing organizers in North America,” said race director and MOMAR principal Bryan Tasaka. Tasaka said that while the exact course route is top secret until the morning of the race, most racers are savvy enough to know that the kayaking is one of the first elements of the race – and no, the kayaking won’t be taking place in the SFU pond. “The course route will incorporate Burnaby Mountain, SFU and Burrard Inlet,” said Tasaka. “It will be challenging.” Tasaka pointed out that for the enduro course, there will be approximately 10 kilometres of kayaking, 20 to 25 kilometres of mountain biking and 10 to 15 kilometres of trekking. Add in the orienteering between the different stages and you have the makings of a fun event. “There’s an eight-hour cutoff for everybody to finish,” said Tasaka. “The elite racers will finish in about four hours and most people will finish in the six to sevenand-a-half hour range.” Making the race even more fun is that racers can do the race solo or in teams of two or four members. “The team element of the race allows more people to get involved,” said Tasaka. “Burnaby is a fantastic venue for a MOMAR. ... The trail system on Burnaby Mountain is amazing, the Simon Fraser University campus is spectacular and Burrard Inlet is a fantastic place for a paddle. “I think many of the long time MOMAR racers will be very surprised by how adventurous this race will be.” Participants for the event are expected

That’s music to the ears of Matthew Coyne, executive director for Tourism Burnaby, who’s been slowly, but steadily building up Burnaby as a Lower Mainland sports tourism hub. “We wanted to host an adventure race and when we did our research, we came up with Bryan and his local company,” said Coyne. “We approached Bryan and it came together very quickly.” Coyne said 2011 is set to be a great year in Burnaby sports, with both the MOMAR and the Giro di Burnaby on the summer sports calendar. “Bringing events to Burnaby increases our destination awareness,” said Coyne. “You add in showcase events like the Blues and Roots festival, the Symphony in the Park and the concerts at Deer Lake Park and you can see how strong the Burnaby brand is becoming.” With Coyne on board – and with a receptive city council – Tasaka found the usual obstacles he faced not so tough in Burnaby.

“Getting the permits for this type of event is usually time-consuming,” said Tasaka. “In Squamish, we had to deal with 15 different landholders. ... Here in Burnaby, we dealt with the city and SFU. The city has been incredibly supportive and SFU is allowing us to use their campus.” For Coyne, having another event that will be filled with half the field from out of town has obvious tourism benefits. “This will help the hotels, the restaurants and local businesses that cater to the competitors and their families,” said Coyne. “This will be an economic boost for the city.” With entry fees in the $140 range, Tasaka expects the event to sell out, especially since the entry fee includes the after-party at SFU. “The event is a lot of fun but the after-party is also quite memorable,” said Tasaka. “This is a very social event.” Tasaka is also proud of the fact that a portion of all entries goes toward the Make-A-Wish Foundation, with more than $17,000 donated from the previous 31 races. “That’s our official charity and we are

New Westminster Secondary School student Calliandra Grekul recently filed a story for The Vancouver Sun as part of CBC’s News Day in B.C. News Day in B.C. took place on Nov. 18. CBC partnered with the newspaper or this year’s event. Calliandra’s story was about British Columbia’s training wage. In addition to getting her story published in the Sun, Calliandra joined her fellow students at the CBC

broadcast centre on Nov. 18. As part of News Day in B.C., 30 student journalists presented stories on CBC and in The Vancouver Sun. They worked on the stories for the last six weeks. Students from across Metro Vancouver were selected after pitching their stories during a twoday audition process in October. CBC and Sun employees mentored successful students with their stories. “The students really raised the bar this year,” said Johnny Michel, managing director of CBC

The Group of Five’s upcoming fundraiser offers people a chance to get into the holiday spirit and help a good cause. The Candy Canes, Poinsettias and Pottery fundraising luncheon is being held on Friday, Dec. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at La Rustica. “It’s a three-course holiday luncheon,” said Shirley Piper, a member of the Group of Five. “It’s a beautiful salad, a hot turkey lunch and candy cane ice-cream.” Tickets for the lunch are $30 per person. The event features a luncheon and special holiday entertainment. “We are selling poinsettias, some pottery – beautiful pieces at ridiculous prices. Margaret Saloustras does amazing pieces,” Piper said. “There will be a small silent auction, 20 items max. It is Christmas things.” Funds raised at the event will help the Group of Five buy “bone foam” for Royal Columbian Hospital. The foam, which mirrors the image of the human body, is used in operating rooms. “It keeps them in position,” explained Piper of the product that contours to the patient’s body. “We have already bought one piece. The piece we bought already is for children. It’s a pediatric piece for pediatric surgeries.” The bone foam pieces can be, reused as they have a covering that can be cleaned and sterilized. “Every piece is several hundred dollars,” Piper said. “A little pediatric piece

is anywhere from $400 to $1,200. There are pieces that can be used for a head injury, a neck injury. A lot of it is used for seniors to get them into comfortable positions.” In addition to helping surgeons, Piper said the bone foam helps patients as they’re placed in more comfortable positions. “It can be used by any surgeon,” she said. “It assists the surgeons in that it gives them a better view of the area. The patients don’t suffer any trauma.” Gerda Suess, founder of the Group of Five, said the tour of houses decorated in their Christmas finery isn’t being held this year, but will be offered next hear. Last year, the Group of Five tour featured several local homes decorated to the hilt for the holidays. “We are going to do it every second year,” Piper said. “We have full commitments for next year from some amazing homes.” The year ahead is shaping up to be a busy time for the Group of Five, which is planning to hold its garden luncheon, the holiday home tour and the tie, pashima and Italian jewelry luncheon. A group of local women formed the Group of Five (and Friends) in 2004 to raise money to buy items that were needed at Royal Columbian Hospital but weren’t being funded. “We are now an association,” Suess said. “Not only that, but we can write tax receipts.” Tickets for the fundraising luncheon are available by calling the Group of Five at 604-522-7196 or 604-522-9907, or at Root Source Inc. at 239 Sixth St.

Bob Salt was let go by the ’Bellies late last week after seven mostly successesful seasons with the storied senior A Western Lacrosse Association club. Salt guided the Salmonbellies to three league titles in the last four seasons and to three consecutive Mann Cups. Giovanni Trasolini scored two touchdowns to lead the junior varsity St. Thomas More Knights to a 36-7 win over Lord Tweedsmuir Nov. 18. The quarter-final victory at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West put the Knights into the final four and a meeting with archrival Vancouver College Fighting Irish. The upcoming semifinal took on greater significance following the varsity Knights’ ignominious 49-2 loss to Vancouver College in the AAA varsity quarter-final at Thunderbird Stadium last Friday. “Do I use that as motivation? Yes, I do. We are a program. When one of the programs feels it’s been challenged, the other program steps up, and that’s what we’re going to do,” said STM JV head coach Dave Ruyzcki. Trasolini, a 6-3 junior wide receiver, hauled in two touchdown passes from quarterback Chase Malcolm, scoring from 40 and 21 yards out. Sebastien Adugalski ran for a 15yard score, while Elliot Nelson also had a rushing TD for the Knights. Dante Vigini blocked a punt and recovered the ball in the end zone for a fifth STM touchdown. Malcolm, the Knights’ Grade 9 pivot, completed eight passes for just over 100 yards in the win. STM’s only defeat this season was an exhibition loss to the Fighting Irish

The New Westminster Minor Lacrosse Association was named host of the Canadian girls’ bantam and midget national championships in 2011. The championships will be played from July 24 to 28, with the possibility of the opening ceremonies taking place on July 23. The St. Thomas More Knights AAA varsity football team now knows what it’s really like to lose. The team of mostly firstyear senior Knights took a paddling at the hands of their arch-rivals Vancouver College Fighting Irish, falling 49-2 in the quarter-finals at Thunderbird Stadium last Friday. The game began on an ignominious note for the

Knights. The usually surehanded STM quarterback Mikey Carney fumbled the opening snap on his own 11yard line. He was then sacked for a four-yard loss before losing the handle on a long snap on a third-and17 call. That set up College for an easy score with barely two minutes gone in the contest, which was played in falling snow for much of the game. STM’s only points came

on a safety touch when an Irish ballcarrier slipped in the end zone. STM managed just five yards rushing and 47 through the air against College in the first half. The Knights also lost lineman Luca Molanari and running back Justin Siglos to injuries in the first quarter. “At the end of the day, (College) had to play with the same conditions and they played better,” said STM head coach Bernie

we were as good. I take the blame for not winning, but these guys really performed,” said the Canadian hall of famer. “I’m a lacrosse guy. I like the game and I love the ’Bellies. What a team I had. I had a great team. What an opportunity. I played and coached a long time and then I end up with this magic team.” Salt even ranks his time with the current Salmonbellies above that of his World championship win as coach of the 1980 Coquitlam Adanacs. But Salt’s passion was not enough to earn him another year behind the ’Bellies bench. “I think Bob (Salt) had the respect of the room. But over the years, (the players) grew comfortable with their surroundings. It was time for a change,” Richardson said. “We had to send a message through the

During the afternoon of November 13, 2010, Roy (Buster) Cairns passed on peacefully, comforted by love from family during his ﬁnal moments. Beloved father of Randy (Carmen), Janice (Ken), Cathie and Royann. Predeceased by his wife, Elly, son Ronald and granddaughter Angela. Survived by his ﬁrst wife, Rose Cairns. Loving grandfather to: Daniella, Michael, Steven, Gregory, Jessica, Brenna, Seth, Kerrie Anne, Brandy, Charlie, Rowan, Torie and Kathleen and 5 greatgrandchildren. Roy (Buster) is also survived by his loving brother Bud Cairns, sister, Noni Larson (Cairns) of Abbotsford and many loving nieces, nephews. Roy was an energetic, witty and gentle spirit that lived a full life. He proudly served for his country in WWII with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Roy (Buster) Cairns was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in soccer. Roy was a member of Canada’s First World Cup Soccer Team and was also awarded Athlete of the Year in 1957. Roy was further honoured with recognition in the New Westminster and Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame. Roy greatly enjoyed volunteering in his community of New Westminster at the Police Detachment’s Crime Prevention Division for over 20 years. Roy’s friendly attitude and whimsical smile opened the door to many lifelong relationships that will remain cherished. Roy had a loving and caring nature about him that will live on within his remaining family. He touched the hearts of many and we will remain forever blessed for having shared our lives with his. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at 12:00 noon at Columbia-Bowell Funeral Chapel, 219 - 6th Street, New Westminster, BC. a full day’s worth of research: Look at everything online on the potential employer and download its financial reports and any news stories about the company. Those hiring want to see that candidates recognize what the organization is currently going through and the significance of its business. “The resume needs to really prove that you understand what you are looking at and be speaking to the cogent points that are identified in an advertisement,” says Carpenter. “Pull out points and address issues. It really has to be customized — use your knowledge, intuition and research ability — and avoid using formulaic vocabulary, such as ‘team player’ or ‘highly motivated.’ These will not cut it.” When describing the assets you bring to a job, make sure it is backed up by your working life. “You want to highlight different dimensions of your experience to be congruent with that organization and that specific job,” says Aplin, the COO at David Aplin Recruiting. “Ensure there are no empty words.” A resume can be a way to show your personality, he suggests. Include a few aspects that are unique to you such as a health or community initiative with which you were involved, for example, if appropriate to the job. “If a typical HR person is filtering through a high volume of resumes, you might be able to add colour or zing to your resume to make it more interesting to read,” he says. In explaining your career, adds Carpenter, never put the onus on the reader to do further research. “I can’t stand when I get a resume and they have the company name but nothing about size, scope, nature of business, reporting structure, revenue,” he says. “You should be able to look at the resume and get all the information you need to make a decision.” Employers find it hard to resist “compelling” resumes, according to Tayts. “In order to stand out and get to the top 10 per cent of the talent pool, you need to have a resume that is able to articulate value very quickly,” says the founder of ResumeTarget Inc. He estimates it takes around nine seconds for a hiring manager to propel the applicant to the next stage. Enlisting professional advice in writing your resume is often the best approach, according to Aplin. “It’s a good thing to polish or make the writing more attractive or engaging,” he says.
