Loss creates ‘chaos’

Members of the New Westminster Community Gardening Society are sharing the fruits of their labour with the Elizabeth Fry Society. A group of local residents formed the society to support the development and operation of community gardens in New Westminster. On Saturday, they harvested the community plots at the Mary Mount Community Garden at St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church in Sapperton. “This is fresh, organic produce grown using a traditional First Nations technique of using permaculture principles in agriculture,” said Brennan Anstey, chair of the New Westminster Community Gardening Society. “The corn provides support for the beans, which fixate nitrogen for the corn, and the squash acts as groundcover to keep in moisture and keep down weeds.” All the community gardeners have tended to the plots as part of their commitment of volunteer hours for maintaining the garden. The produce is being donated to the Elizabeth Fry Society to help it meet the needs of its clients. “This is part of the commitment we made to the city to help promote food security in New Westminster,” said David Maidman, a member of the society’s board of directors. “I think when you look around at what we have grown this year on this small plot of ground it shows the future potential for urban agriculture in New Westminster.” The society began construction of the garden plots in May, after reaching an agreement with St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church. Produce has been growing in 15 plots on the site that overlooks the Fraser River. New Westminster Family Place is on a hunt for space for some of its programs after losing a space it has called home for nearly a decade. Executive director Marjorie Staal said the nonprofit is no longer able to use the community room in Royal City Centre for its Friday morning drop-in and Friday afternoon program for immigrant grandparents. Staff learned they would no longer have access to the space when they went to the mall to set up for the program that was set to launch a week later. A security guard told them they were no longer able to use the space. “It means chaos down here,” Staal said. “We had it on our monthly calendar for September. We have been advertising here. We have it on our website that it was coming. It has been like a real bad dream.” Staal had hoped Family Place could at least offer the program for a couple of weeks, in order to reach those people who may not know it was no longer being offered at the mall, but that wasn’t permitted. The programs had been on summer hiatus at the uptown location and were set to resume in September. “We are homeless,” she said about the uptown drop-in. “We originally started that program to encourage the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood and the Uptown neighbourhood because parents up there were finding it trouble-

HMCS Freedom of the City Ceremony In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy, the Council of the City of New Westminster has conferred Freedom of the City upon HMCS Discovery. This honour is rarely given and since its inception in 1859, the City has granted this privilege to four persons and one group, the last one having been granted in 1963. Such an honour indicates the trust and respect that the City has for the HMCS Discovery and the Canadian Navy and gives the Discovery the right to march through the city with flags flying, bayonets fixed and band playing. The Freedom of the City award ceremony will be held on Sunday, October 3rd at 1:00 pm on the front steps of City Hall. The program will involve an inspection of the HMCS Discovery, the Navy League and Sea Cadets by the Mayor, presentation of the Scroll to the Commanding Officer of the HMCS Discovery and a march past on Royal Avenue. The school district held two public meetings last week on the plans for three new schools in New Westminster, which included information on a Ministry of
Education initiative that includes additional space at the schools for community programs, like daycare facilities and health and social services agencies. Roughly 50 people turned up to Thursday’s meeting and about 40 attended Saturday’s meeting, which included information on the Neighbourhoods of Learning initiative. Founded by the Ministry of Education, Neighbourhoods of Learning allows up to 15 per cent of additional space in new schools to be built to
meet the needs of the broader community. The district hasn’t determined what the additional space will be used for at all three schools, though it has said that at the replacement New Westminster Secondary School a portion of the Neighbourhoods of Learning space could go towards a new 1,000-seat theatre to replace Massey Theatre. Three new schools are slated to be built in New Westminster over the next several years, including a new elementary school
at the former Saint Mary’s Hospital site, a new middle school on the John Robson Elementary site and a replacement high school. One of the likely Neighbourhoods of Learning options is for the UBC counselling program to continue to be housed at the high school. The program has used space at the high school for 35 years, said Jim Alkins, a consultant hired by the ◗Learning Page 4

some to come down the hill and back up again. We have so many families attached to us through that mall. That’s their place. They were waiting for us to open up.” Laura Veevers, property manager at Royal City Centre, said the mall’s tenants pay for maintenance of the community room. She said several tenants reported that they were unable to use the room for seminars and workshops because Family Place equipment was stored there. “They have had 10 great years of use of that room free of charge. We do a lot of work for the community,” she said. “I would personally like to see more seminars and workshop type things. It’s too permanent what is in there right now. It has prevented others from using it.” Veevers said the community room has suffered several break-ins, which have been attributed to the items being stored there by Family Place. She said the plan is to improve the space with new flooring and paint and make it available for groups looking to put on seminars and workshops. “It’s been great they have been able to use it for 10 years,” she said. “We need it to use it for other uses as well.” Two Family Place staff attended the mall on the day the drop-in program was set to begin. “People were really upset,” Staal said of parents’ reactions. “They are really confused. They are really upset. They don’t understand the reason. I don’t know what to say.” Royal City Centre has made the space available at no charge to New Westminster Family Place for nearly 10 years. From January to June of this year, 535 adults and 598 children accessed the programs that Family Place offered at the mall on Fridays. “We have in the drop-in program, a core of 80 to 100 families. The grandparents program is probably 100 families,” Staal said. “Most of them buy things there. They stop for lunch.” According to Veevers, the mall’s new owners are interested in reducing the number of vacancies in Royal City Centre. City wants port money
The City of New Westminster is seeking full payment from Port Metro Vancouver for its property in the city. Council has directed the mayor to write a letter to Port Metro Vancouver requesting full payment of unpaid “payments in lieu of taxes” for the years 2000 to 2010. A staff report to city council states that the Federal Payments in Lieu of Taxes Act sets out the guidelines for “fair and equitable administration” of those payments by crown corporations. Since 2000, the City of New Westminster has applied to the federal government for full payment of the taxes, which is known as PILT. “Port Metro Vancouver, and its predeces-
sors, has repeatedly denied application by the city for PILT on federal real property consisting of unoccupied portions of the Fraser River riverbed,” said the report. “We believe that Port Metro Vancouver’s valuations did not properly reflect the property assessment valuations for the unoccupied Fraser River riverbed lands, as determined by B.C. Assessment.” The city will provide Port Metro Vancouver with detailed calculations for each year from 2000 to 2009. According to the City of New Westminster, Port Metro Vancouver has paid the city $672,000 for those years. The city wants an additional $1.5 million.

Families worried about group home cuts Changes to Community Living B.C. raise fears for families

Devastating, drastic and depressing. Those are just a few words that come to Andrew Latta’s mind when he considers the life his sister could face should a series of rumoured provincial budget cuts take effect in group homes across B.C. Andrew’s48-year-oldsister, Susan, lives with Down syndrome and other challenges related to her ability to communicate. She’s lived in a supported group home on Rochester Avenue in Coquitlam for almost 20 years, and it’s through that setting that she’s made tangible strides towards successfully integrating into the community. However, Andrew, a New Westminster resident, and others in his family fear that those tenets of independence, trust and comfort will disappear should a series of provincial funding cuts close down the home that Susan and two others
live in. “Susan’s been living there for almost 20 years. She’s very, very happy, very well served, and she wouldn’t be doing as well as she would without the services and supports that she’s getting,” he told the Coquitlam NOW, a sister paper of The Record, on Monday. “What the government is about to do is kick her out of her home, take away all those services, and it’s going to be devastating to her life. Andrew was reacting to news that Community Living B.C. (CLBC) is in the process of conducting a “service level redesign,” one that is meant to address a six per cent growth in demand for services this year.” Redesigning service delivery to be cost-effective is prudent, because it effectively manages our resources to ensure our system of supports is sustainable,” said a rep from the Ministry of Housing and Social Development, who asked not to be named. “The community living sector has shifted from housing people with developmental disabilities in institutions and isolation towards including people

But now people with disabilities are being forced from their homes, and some of the most vulnerable people in our communities are having to pay the price for the B.C. met with a refusal as a matter of course. It was anticipated that most requests would have to go through an appeal process, which would take time and, in some cases, money. The plan was pretty obvious – stall and hope the request goes away. Or, by the time the request is met the information will not be as “newsy.” According to the Minister of Citizens’ Services, Mary McNeil, the government has made great strides in the process. She notes that since 2001, information request response times have gone from an average of 71 to 24 business days. And
there has been a 90 per cent compliance rate. Critics are not quite as pleased with the stats and say that there is still much improvement needed. But it’s worth noting that Elizabeth Denham, B.C.’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, has been clear that she expects compliance with the law – and, judging by her recent actions, she’s not to be trifled with. Let’s hope everybody gets the message and the ‘right to know’ becomes much more than just a great slogan one week of the year.

as the anti-HST campaign headed by Bill Vander Zalm and Chris Delaney shifted from being an exercise in grassroots democracy to becoming a form of mob rule? It’s a question worth posing in light of their attempt to force the B.C. government to back down from holding a provincewide referendum on the HST next year. While it can certainly be argued that waiting a full year to resolve this issue may not be the preferable route – why can’t the vote take place next spring, for example? – it doesn’t follow that an elected government should bend to the demands of an unelected minority. Last week’s news release from the Fight HST group that outlines their plans for a mass recall of 18 B.C. Liberal MLAs reads like a ransom note. “Give in to our demands or you will never see your government again” might as well have been the headline on that release. It lists five demands that must be met by the government before recall efforts are called

off. One of those demands is that Fight HST (i.e. Vander Zalm and Delaney) be allowed to formally approve the actual question to be put on the HST referendum Who do these people think they are? Why should Vander Zalm and Delaney be granted some kind of special status in a referendum that is supposed to be democratic? Why should a man who resigned in disgrace from the premier’s office for serious ethical lapses be allowed to dictate the terms of how we are going to vote for or against a tax? It’s important to separate your opinion of the HST, of Gordon Campbell or of the B.C. Liberal government from what Vander Zalm and his gang are demanding. There’s no question the B.C. Liberal government is deeply unpopular, and opposition to the HST remains high. But anyone who wants the government replaced or the tax repealed is not required to also embrace the idea that Vander Zalm and his unelected gang are allowed to dictate who ultimately runs this province. One of Vander Zalm’s recall organizers, Al Romanchuk of Kelowna, has had to resign his position after it was revealed he is an admirer of neo-Nazi Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel (explain to me again why New

Sept. 25. Interesting article, and I applaud Ms. Keenan for the idea. I walk almost everywhere and do all of my grocery shopping at the local shops, meat markets and grocers uptown. It’s easy to check weekly specials for the bigger stores on the Internet or the flyers. My only grumble is the lack of a local fishmonger. Of course, the grocery items are not local, but supporting the local folks is always how I’ve shopped. I’ve heard ladies stressing that they cannot get lingerie and other clothing items locally, but would many support such small shops? Yikes, the rent/lease costs are high, then add insurance, utilities, stock, personnel – it’s a tough market to turn a profit. Still, New West has some fun bookstores, eclectic shops with retro clothing, antiques, jewelry, many salons and barbers, gas stations and car repair, and some excellent stand-alone eateries from small diners to upscale bistros. I love it all! I wouldn’t ignore the churches either – we have many, and I love the sense of comfort and spirituality they offer, even if I don’t get out to service much. But I know I wouldn’t be turned away at any of them. That’s kind of like shopping, isn’t it?
A matter of semantics Dear Editor:
The oil barons seem to have succeeded in persuading most Canadian media that the term “tar sands” is derogatory, so “oil sands” should be used instead in discussing the big petroleum mining operations in northern Alberta. What I don’t understand is why mining corporations find tar to be such a dirty word. After all, the recent BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico was not caused by the blowout of a tar well. The Enbridge pipeline spill in Michigan this summer was oil, not tar. The tanker Exxon Valdez did not foul Prince William Sound in Alaska with tar, but with oil. The toxic haze that hangs over our highways is not the result of burning tar. Would it help the cause of the petrochemical empire to have California’s famed La Brea Tar Pits renamed La Brea Oil Pits? If the exercise in corporate semantics is followed through, will oil fans no longer set their sights on targets, but on oilgets? Will they strum their guitoils under the soils of the night sky? That’s just silly, isn’t it? But is it any sillier than playing word games with what much of the world sees as a very dirty and dangerous way of extracting crude oil from tar sands? But that revelation should come as no surprise, as Vander Zalm has a long history of attracting questionable characters (with extreme right-wing views) to anything he’s in charge of. To give the Fight HST organization some kind of formal power over the terms of a referendum flies in the face of democracy. No one has elected them to do anything. (Delaney has tried several times to be elected an MLA, but he hasn’t come close to being chosen by the people.) Even their anti-HST petition, for all its success at exceeding a low thresh-
old to make it effective, was ignored or rejected by more than 81 per cent of the electorate. Vander Zalm and his gang have essentially been given a free ride in the media since they began their petition drive. People who should know better have been swept along by populist sentiment and the charismatic, engaging former premier. But excuse me if I choose not to be part of that blind obedience. Recalling a B.C. Liberal MLA is one thing, but the implications of allowing a non-elected gang to dictate the law to a government are enormous and quite troubling.
It may make Gordon Campbell’s attempt to stay in power more problematic, but hopefully he ignores the demands from the mob. ◗ We all lost a dear friend last week when Sindi Hawkins succumbed to her long struggle with cancer. The former B.C. Liberal MLA from Kelowna was an inspiration to all who knew her and even to those who didn’t. She rarely let her illness dampen her spirit, and she maintained a cheerful and even humorous optimism as she overcame one challenge after another. She will truly and sadly be missed. The newly opened youth centre is attracting youths from all walks of life. Located in Moody Park at the rear of Century House, the New Westminster Youth Centre is being embraced by many local youth. “After school we are averaging 70 to 80 kids every day. They usually go home for dinner. At the end of the night you will see 20 to 30 coming back,” said Sandon Fraser, the city’s youth services coordinator. “Friday and Saturday has been a consistent 50plus all day. out.” Sandon said the numbers of people visiting the centre are consistent with what he’d been hoping for. He noted that one-half of the 13- to 18-year-olds who are living in New Westminster live within one kilometre of the youth centre, which is one of the reasons the Moody Park site was selected as its home. “One big thing we are seeing nowadays is they don’t have houses, they don’t have basements,” he said. “They need a place like this they can come and hang with their friends.”
Playing bubble hockey, pool, foosball and Rock Band have been some of the centre’s popular attractions. Youth have also enjoyed checking their emails in the computer lab and break dancing in the recreation area. Sandon is pleased to see that the centre has drawn youth from a variety of social groups and ages. He said jocks, mainstream youth and youth at risk or medium risk are all attending the centre – something that indicates the centre is successful in its goal of making everyone feel welcome.

promises,” said Shane Simpson, MLA for Vancouver-Hastings, in a release issued Monday. The home Susan lives in is run by the Simon Fraser Society for Community Living, a non-profit organization that’s served everyone from infants to seniors from the Tri-Cities and New Westminster for more than 50 years. When contacted Monday, the society’s executive director could neither confirm nor deny whether the Rochester home was being shut down or whether any of the society’s clients will be displaced. “That’s a question that will be answered over what we hope will be a longer period of time as we engage in conversation with our funders, the families and the individuals,” said executive director Christine Scott, who
was scheduled to be in meetings with Community Living B.C. reps throughout Tuesday to get more clarity on the issue. Andrew said the funding allotment his sister traditionally received was more than $8,000 per month, though those portions have recently been reduced to $1,779. That change means she can no longer stay in her home of choice, and she’ll be placed in foster care instead. “She’s going to lose all her social support, she’s going to lose all her emotional support, and she’s not going to get the service and support she needs: the medication she needs, the doctors’ appointments, getting out into the community,” he said. “She’s going to become a prisoner of her bedroom and isolated. She’s going to become withdrawn and depressed. It’s going to be a nightmare.”
Adding insult to injury is the timeline attached to Susan’s impending move. Her family has been told by the province that she’ll have to be out of the Coquitlam home and into foster care by November, although her family members have been advised by those in the health-care field that such a move could take up to a year to successfully complete. “I’m her older brother. I’ve known her for her entire 48 years. I see what goes into supporting her, and I see how fragile her success is,” he said. “So if you take away her supports, you throw them to the wolves and start bouncing these people around in foster care, this is going to do irreparable damage,” he said. “We’re concerned a little bit about timeline, and that the timelines are responsible, and that good process be followed,” Scott added.

Heritage agreements to be streamlined by city
The City of New Westminster is proposing to streamline the heritage revitalization agreement application process to address concerns regarding the length of time needed to get through the process. City staff has proposed suggestions for streamlining the process to address concerns about the number of city committees involved with reviewing an application, and the costs associated with taking an application through the regulatory process. Here’s what’s being proposed: ◗ If a heritage revitalization agreement proposal meets the policies and guidelines of the official community plan and pertinent neighbourhood plans, the application will be considered at one meeting of the city’s advisory planning commission. ◗ If a heritage revitalization agreement doesn’t involve the construction of a new multi-family or commercial building, the proposal will not need to be considered by the New Westminster design panel. – Theresa McManus

Fire hall opens doors

New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service is once again opening its doors to the community in honour of Fire Prevention Week. The annual fire hall open house and safety fair is taking place on Saturday, Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Glenbrook fire hall, which is located at the corner of McBride Boulevard and East Sixth Avenue. Fire inspector Charles Calogiros said the open house is a good opportunity for residents to see firefighters in a different setting. “They see the fire service in an
emergency situation,” he said. “This gives them a chance to see us in another environment. It’s a different side of firefighting and rescue.” In addition to providing some fire safety information, the event is meant to be fun. “I had one kid last year tell me, ‘This is better than the PNE,’” Calogiros said. Now in its fifth year, the open house gets bigger each year. New additions to this year’s event include participation from New Westminster parks, culture and recreation staff, who will be setting up a crafts table for the kids. “It’s a huge opportunity for build-
ing bridges with various community partners and city departments,” Calogiros said about the event. Some of the participants from the city’s first ever youth firefighter program will be on hand to give out applications for the 2011 program. Heritage plans revised A Brow of the Hill resident is hoping the third time’s the charm for a heritage revitalization agreement. The city has received a revised heritage revitalization agreement that’s proposing to subdivide 1010 and 1012 Third Ave. into three properties retain the two existing heritage houses and build a new compatible house on the new lot. A staff report noted that this is the applicant’s third proposal for the property at 1010 Third Ave. “After extensive public consultation and significant opposition, the applicant revised his proposal,” said the staff report. “He pur-
chased the single lot directly to the west of the property and now owns both 1010 and 1012 Third Ave.” The owner withdrew a previous application because of financial concerns. The house at 1010 Third Ave. was built in 1915, while the home at 1012 Third Ave. was built in 1893. The 100-year history of St. Aidan’s Church will soon find its way into the history books. In December 2009, St. Aidan’s kicked off a celebration of its 100-year anniversary with a special service of worship. This year’s events have included a musical evening, a talent show, a float in the Hyack International Parade featuring a replica of the church, participation in the New Westminster Heritage Homes Tour, a strawberry tea and vintage fashion show, an old-fashioned family picnic and an evening featuring old movies of congregational events. The year-long celebration will wrap up with a series of events being held Oct. 8 to 10, including an informal open house, an anniversary dinner and a worship service. “We have been celebrating various events since December,” said Eileen

Some things, however, have stayed the same. In 1912 and again in 1925, the congregation was asked to vote on joining with the Methodists and Congregationalists, but the congregation chose to remain with the Presbyterian Church. St. Aidan’s is named after an Irish monk who helped establish a monastery on the island of Lindisfarne in Northern England in 634 AD. “The Ladies’ Aid was formed in 1910, and it was their fundraising efforts in the early years which sustained the church. One of their major activities was serving dinner at the Provincial Exhibition Grounds in Queen’s Park,” said the document. “The Vagabond Players had their beginnings as a drama group at St. Aidan’s in 1937.”

ob Chessell has assumed command of one of the cadet corps affiliated with the Royal Westminster Regiment. A change of command parade was held Monday at the Royal Westminster Regiment Armoury. At that time, Chessell assumed command of the army cadet corps from Capt. Wendy Blomme, who has been the commanding officer for several years. “I really enjoy it,” said Chessell, who has been involved with the group for about 10 years. “You get to work with some young, enthusiastic kids.” The 2316 Royal Canadian army cadet corps is one of five cadet corps affiliated with the Royal Westminster Regiment. As the army cadet corps’s command-
ing officer, Chessell will be responsible for its training, administration, exercises, uniforms – and more. Chessell was involved in the army cadets back east in the 1960s and got involved once again after retiring. Lt.-Col. Doug Poitras, commanding officer of the Royal Westminster Regiment, was among those who attended Monday’s change of command parade, which included a march past the retiring commanding officer, an inspection and a march past the new commanding officer.
Pledging peace
New Westminster’s Baha’i community observed International Day of Peace with a family festival on Sept. 18. The event, held at the Centennial Community Centre, included face painting, crafts and snacks. Attendees had a chance to sign a Peace Pledge. “This year (United Nations) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling on young people around the world to take a stand for
peace under the theme, Youth for Peace and Development,” said an email from Eman Elmasri. “The campaign slogan this year is Peace=Future.” A group of local friends/mothers from New Westminster’s Baha’i community organized the event to celebrate the International Peace. The Local Spiritual Assembly of New Westminster Baha’i Community sponsored the event. Elmasri explains that the United Nations celebrates International Day of Peace each year on Sept. 21, a day that calls for ceasefire and non-violence. In keeping with this year’s theme of Youth for Peace and Development, organizers decided to organize a family festival for International Peace Day. More than 70 people attended the event and celebrated the International Peace Day. MLA Dawn Black and Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian were among those who attended. “Many families and their children were there,” Elmasri said in the e-mail.

Dementia poses difficulties for caregivers HEALTHWISE

I
n a previous column, I introduced you to the emotional and moral minefield faced by the families of individuals with dementia. With illness and advanced age, we can lose our independence in action and decisionmaking. We can become more reliant on family and friends for many of the activities of daily living, including shopping, housekeeping, cooking, bathing and dressing. Increasingly, adults in their 30s and 40s are finding themselves in the sandwich generation, raising their growing children while looking after the increasing needs of their aging parents. It can be a stressful role, especially if a parent is suffering from dementia. Every week, at least one older patient will tell me, “Don’t ever grow old.” I always respond, “It seems better than the alterna-
tive,” but I know what they mean. Every day can be a challenge when your body can no longer do what it used to, you have to take six different medications, including sleeping pills because, though you’re tired all the time, sleep is lighter and nonrestorative. More unfortunate still is the fact that none of us gets a choice over what will go first: the body or the mind. Is it better to have clear awareness of the suffering of our aging bodies, or is it better to imagine ourselves young again with the loved ones of our past, unaware of our complete dependence of others? It is quite normal to have some decline in short-term memory with age, and this usually presents as benign absentmindedness. When most patients come to the doctor with concerns with their memory, subsequent testing reassures them that the misplacement of their keys at home is not a harbinger for dementia. It’s normal to misplace your keys when you’re not paying attention, but you may have a problem if you find them in the
microwave. It’s normal to walk into your bedroom and forgetting what you were looking for, but it’s not if you find yourself in your neighbour’s house. It may be normal to wander around the Metrotown parking lot looking for your car, but it’s not if you took the bus there – or you actually had to give up your driver’s licence 5 years ago. With dementia, it is often family members who first pick up on the memory problems. If you or your loved ones are worried that you may have a problem, don’t hesitate to see your family physician. A simple test for dementia is the Mini Mental Status Exam. Most cases of dementia respond to medications if started early on in their course. Other treatable causes of memory loss include hypothyroidism and depression. The decline in cognitive function with age can be delayed or even reversed with stimulating activities, including the challenge of learning new information or cognitive exercise. I often prescribe the Nintendo DS game Brain Age to my older patients.

When we are no longer able to understand our circumstances, our medical choices and the implications of those choices, we are deemed incapable of our own medical decisionmaking. In the absence of an advanced directive, your doctors will turn to your spouse or family to make choices on your behalf. In our consultations at Burnaby Hospital, the ethical resources committee would guide family members in considering the medical choices (e.g. to start or not start tube feeding; to continue or withdraw life support; to decline or submit to surgery) within the context of their loved one’s whole life – the individual’s personal values and where the greatest meaning in life was found.
For example, artificial feeding through a tube may be appropriate when an individual is no longer able to safely swallow yet is able to enjoy visits with friends and family. It may not be if it prolongs suffering and a quality of life that the individual would deem untenable. Over time, family members may need to revisit their decisions and reassess the patient’s circumstances when their condition and quality of life may have declined. Again, this should only be done from the individual patient’s perspective. When caring for a dependent loved one with dementia, emotional and moral stress can be overwhelming. Family members may find themselves feeling resentful, impatient and angry. This is often
associated with a sense of guilt for having these normal feelings. As caregivers, we have to embrace the good days and appreciate the time distortions of dementia. They live in a different present – which may be the seemingly real present of childhood – of happier days. We do not have to draw them into our present if they are happiest where they are. Self-care of the family caregiver is essential. Each must have their own support system, others who are willing to listen. There is the option of respite, wherein the loved one can be admitted to a long term care facility for a weekend or a week to give the primary caregiver a break. House, as it was known because of its colourful blossoms. Mike and Ray’s father, Harvie, inherited two small boats, the Harvie W and Old Faithful, and began working on the river as Pitt River Towing. The float house was badly damaged by ice in 1939, and a new log float and house were built to serve as both home and dock for their three tugs, which now included the Wayfarer. By 1944, Harvie had married Nellie, and the couple began operating a shipyard site and sawmill for 10 years. As Harvie continued to expand the business, the Forrest name became synonymous with towing, fishing and sawmilling. Forrest Marine is now known as a leader in towing, log handling and
storage, marine transportation and marine contracting. “We are thrilled to be able to honour Nellie, Mike and Ray Forrest,” said Ouellet-Martin. The Fraser River Hall of Fame gala dinner goes on Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Fraser River Discovery Centre on the New Westminster waterfront. “We’ve held the gala at the Discovery Centre the last two years because we think it’s important for people to see the progress we’re making here,” said Ouellet-Martin. Tickets are $150 and available by calling the centre at 604-521-8401. Tickets to last year’s gala sold out, so people are encouraged to reserve early. Forrest Marine Ltd., a third-generation family business, will be the 21st inductee into the Fraser River Hall of Fame. The award, administered by the Fraser River Discovery Centre, honours river-based businesses or individuals who have made a positive contribution to the Fraser River community. “The Forrest family has done so much on and for the river,” said Catherine Ouellet-Martin, executive director for the Discovery Centre. “I can’t think of a more worthy family and business to receive this year’s honour.” The Forrest family’s connection to the Fraser River goes back more
than 100 years and has included endeavours such as sawmilling, log sorting, log salvage, tugboating, water taxis and fishing. The current owners, Mike and Ray Forrest, are the third generation of a family who has lived and worked on the river. In 1916, Mike and Ray’s grandparents, Samuel and Hilda Forrest, towed their float house with their two children upriver from Annacis Slough to the present day site of Harken Towing in Port Coquitlam. Just after 1930, Samuel moved their float house up to the government wharf at the foot of Pitt River Road, next door to the family’s presentday home. Samuel died in 1935, and Hilda and her three young children were left on their own in the Flower Float

Perhaps it was wishful thinking when Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing played on the speakers at Mercer Stadium in the waning moments of a New Westminster Hyacks 430 loss to the Vancouver College Fighting Irish on Friday night. The Hyacks, now 0-4 for the year after playing the top three ranked teams in the province in consecutive weeks, played better than the score indicated and were undone by key turnovers that resulted in 29 of the Irish’s 43 points. The Hyacks came out strong, stopping the Irish on their opening drive and taking the ball on their own 22 to start an eightminute drive. The Hyacks converted two fourth-down gambles, the first on a 12-yard completion from Regan Eberding to James Belgrave and then on an 11-yard Belgrave run to the Irish 13-yard line. But it was the third fourth-down gamble that turned the tide for the Irish. With the Hyacks facing fourth-and-eight from the Irish 10-yard line, Eberding rolled out left and tried to force a ball into coverage. Irish defensive back Daniel Laventure picked the ball off at his own six and with a convoy of blockers in front of him, returned the pigskin 94 yards for the opening score. “That was a huge turning point because the worst we should have been is still tied with them deep in their own end,” said Hyacks head coach Farhan

The Irish took over on their own 48 and running back Lendl Magsipoc rumbled up the left side for a 40-yard gain that set up an eventual 11-yard TD reception from Jeff Tichelman to Reiner Theil.
The Hyacks couldn’t move the ball on their next possession and weren’t helped by a 10-yard punt that gave the Irish the ball again at the Hyack 32-yard line. Running back Adam Konar busted up the middle for a 35-yard gain – the Irish had been pushed back because of penalties – and then got the Irish’s third score on a one-yard plunge. The Irish went for two points after the Hyacks took a procedure penalty and Daniel Kalinowski made it 22-0 with 2:36 left in the first half. “We thought about taking a knee and going into the half only down 22, but we thought that sent the wrong message to our kids,” said Lalji. “We
had done a lot of good things offensively in the first half and we thought we could just get down and get something before the half.” That plan went out the window when Irish allprovince lineman Christian Covington wreaked havoc in the Hyacks backfield. With only 17 seconds left in the half, Eberding got sandwiched between Covington and Stefan Renzullo, knocking the Hyacks’ “Mr. Everything” out of the game. “Christian played really well and he did a lot of good things,” said Bernett. Lalji was even more complimentary: “Christian’s a stud,” said Lalji. “He played like an absolute stud.” Backup QB Serafino
Gentile came in and was picked by Konar, who returned it 79 yards for the Irish’s fourth TD. “We should have gone into the half down 14-7 and instead, we were down 290,” said Lalji. “For an emotionally fragile team like ours, that was tough.” The second half saw the Irish capitalize on two more Hyack turnovers. A Gentile fumble led to Theil’s second TD reception of the game, from 19 yards out, and a Gentile pick was returned by Sean Mayzes from 23 yards out to complete the scoring. Clan suffers 44-30 loss Gabe Ephard did his part for the Simon Fraser University Clan, rushing for two touchdowns and 222 yards, but that wasn’t enough to beat the No. 22ranked Central Washington Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Fox Field. The Clan fell to 0-4 for the year, losing 44-30 in a highly entertaining offensive shootout. Ephard’s scores, a 64yard scamper in the second quarter and a 70-yard run in the fourth quarter, were overshadowed by Wildcat Bryson Kelly’s 246 yards, the first time in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history that two backs have each gone over the 200-yard mark in a game. Kelly finished with four TDs, making it seven touchdowns in the last two weeks of action after he scored three against Dixie State last weekend. “I thought we competed well and were right there with Central Washington, but we just let the game slip away in the third quarter,” said SFU head coach Dave Johnson in a press release. “Gabe was just outstanding today, and I thought our players did a fantastic job this week of being prepared, guys went out of their way to watch film and go the extra mile after practice. I thought we had a chance, but we just let it slip out of our hands with a couple of key mistakes.” After the teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter, the game went to the half tied at 10 after field goals by Wildcat Sean Davis and the Clan’s Jeff Biles. The Wildcats jumped out to a 30-10 lead with 20 unanswered points in the second half before Ephard closed the gap to 13 with his second score of the game. Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words Paris Jackson - 19 I was born and raised in North Vancouver and live year-round in the Lower Mainland with my family – so I suppose you could call me a true hometown Lion! I began playing football while attending high school at Carson Graham Secondary and it became my passion – in fact, I set the school’s single-game record for most rushing yards and touchdowns. From early on, I knew I wanted football to be in my future, so focusing on that goal kept me motivated to get good grades and attend university so I’d have the best opportunity to realize my dream. Following my college career at Utah, I was fortunate to be drafted by my hometown BC Lions – a team that I had been inspired by since childhood. After eight seasons with the Black and Orange, I can tell you that having this job is a dream come true. I was fortunate to be part of the team that brought the Grey Cup home to BC in 2006 – the warm welcome we received when we stepped off the plane is a feeling I’ll never forget. As a lifelong B.C. resident, I know British Columbians love their football, which is why it is my mission to do whatever I can on offence to win another championship for the CFL’s best fans. Growing up, I remember what it felt like to look to professional athletes for inspiration, which is a big reason why I love taking part in our club’s community initiatives. Among the programs I take part in, I would say the Timbits Camp is one of the most rewarding because it gives me a good feeling to teach young kids about the game I love and was introduced to right here in British Columbia.

Simon Fraser University Clan junior cross-country runner Jessica Smith was recently named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week after winning the Sundodger Open in Seattle on Sept. 18 Smith’s win led the Clan women’s team to the season’s first meet, with the men putting in a fourth-place overall finish. “We had some great individual performances out of our women,” said SFU head coach Brit Townsend in a press release. “And fourth overall is a great performance at the start of the season for our men. I’m very happy with the start of the season.”
On the women’s side, Smith outpaced the field, completing the six-kilometre course in a time of 21:51.94, narrowly sqeezing past fellow teammate Angela Shaw, who finished second in a time of 21:25.69. Sophomore Helen Crofts came in fifth place, while freshman Lindsay Butterworth finished 13th. Rounding off the top seven for the Clan were sisters Michaela and Brianna Kane and Madeleine Barker, who finished 16th, 18th and 19th respectively. For the men, SFU captain Ryan Brockerville led the Clan with his eighthplace finish, completing the eight-kilometre course in a time of 25:17.45. Sophomore Keir Forster finished in 16th place, while Adam Reid finished 24th.
