They wear a safety vest and hard hat and their only tool is a hand-held stop sign. And for traffic control persons, also known as flaggers, their job may be the most dangerous on any construction road project. On July 15, 49-year-old Donald Cain was killed in Mission while on duty as a flagger. In the past five years, 70 flag persons have been injured in B.C., with five injured this year alone. Removal of some columns and windows in the historic Mc & Mc Building on Columbia Street created quite a stir in the community. Plaza 88 Developments is currently working on its multiuse development near the New Westminster SkyTrain station. The project, which includes residential and commercial components, includes the Mc & Mc
Building that formerly housed the Salvation Army. As part of the development, Plaza 88 Developments agreed to protect the façade of the building at 811 Columbia St. In 2008, the developer indicated that the interior columns with their capitals would be removed. Coun. Betty McIntosh said the developer attended a meeting of the city’s community heritage commission in the spring and stated that the columns could be retained by lowering the build-

ing. She said the columns were removed from the building’s interior without notification, which prompted an outcry. Julie Schueck, the city’s heritage planner, said the heritage protection is for the building’s façade, not its interior. She said some confusion came about after the developer indicated he would be able to save the Art Deco columns with capitals on top. “I think the developer would have loved to have been able to retain them,” she said.
The developer’s intention to retain the columns and capitals by lowering the building was included in a revised heritage conservation plan that was done in March 2010. By May, further investigation indicated that it wouldn’t be feasible to lower the building. The city learned that the columns couldn’t be retained around the same time that city hall received calls from concerned citizens inquiring why all the ◗Columns Page 3

The boarded-up side of KC Market on the corner of Sixth Street and Agnes Street is the only evidence left of the excitement that took place on Sunday morning. Just before 11 a.m., a New Westminster police cruiser hit the north side of the small grocery store, coming to rest with its front end in the business. “The police were responding to numerous 911 calls about a fight in the 500 block of Columbia Street,” said Sgt. Gary Weishaar of the New Westminster Police Service. Weishaar said the officer was heading south on Sixth with his emergency equipment on when he had to turn the

windows had been removed from the Mc & Mc Building. According to Schueck, city hall fielded many calls from people who were in a panic about the removal of the windows. She said the work shouldn’t have taken place without informing the city. “The committee was quite concerned,” McIntosh said. “All of a sudden the windows disappeared.” On May 18, the site received a stop work order when the city discovered work was being carried out on the façade contrary to the heritage conservation plan, and without a heritage alteration permit or a building permit. When all of the city’s conditions were met, the order was removed. “It is very concerning, it is very concerning for me as the heritage planner,” Schueck said. “You want to believe everybody has the best of intentions. I think in that they do have the best of intentions I think perhaps they didn’t understand the process.” A recent staff report to council stated that city officials talked to the project architect, who assured the city that the wood-frame windows had been removed for repair and that the corners of the building would be repaired to match the original design and material. Schueck is confident the restoration of the windows will be done in an appropriate manner. She said the developer has hired excellent companies to restore the windows and make any repairs that may be necessary. “Those windows are safe and sound,” she said. “They have done everything right. They just missed that step of letting us know.”

Flaggers: ‘Always a high-risk position’ ◗ continued from page 1
many for Starlett Bluhm, traffic control program coordinator for the New Westminsterbased B.C. Construction Safety Alliance, which is responsible for training and certification programs for flaggers in the province. “This has always been a high-risk position, and that’s why we are constantly reviewing and updating the training programs for traffic control people,” said Bluhm. “We would also like to see better enforcement to make sure all traffic safety persons can do their jobs safely.” The issue of flagger safety has been in the news because on Aug. 29, a Burnaby driver allegedly impaired by alcohol hit a flag person in a Coquitlam construction zone. The incident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. when a 24-year-old man was driving a Toyota Yaris westbound on Lougheed Highway near Colony Farm. The driver allegedly struck a 33-yearold female flag person, who was controlling traffic at the entrance to the construction zone. The woman was thrown by the impact. She was taken to hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. She was released later Sunday morning. Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said the initial investigation revealed alcohol was a factor in the accident. Phil Hochstein is executive director of the Burnaby-based Independent Contractors and Businesses Association of B.C. The association offers certification exams for flaggers, and Hochstein is also concerned about flagger safety. “The job has always been dangerous and that’s part of the training,” said Hochstein. “In the case of the (Coquitlam) incident, I’m not sure the flagger could have done anything because you have someone who may
be impaired.” Hochstein said he is in favour of the heavier fines – double – for drivers who exceed the speed limit in construction zones. Bluhm reiterated that while traffic control work is a high-risk position within construction, there are many other dangerous positions in the industry. The challenge with traffic control is mitigating the hazards that arise from contact with the public and motor vehicles. Hochstein said it may be time to look at alternative ways to control traffic in construction zones. He said he recently returned from England, where he saw a system of automated stop lights controlling traffic in work areas. “Maybe it’s time to look at different approaches,” he said. Traffic control people must pass a twoday course to be certified to work on a construction project. Typically, the first day includes classwork, including: ◆ Roles and responsibilities of a traffic control person ◆ Complying with regulations and standards ◆ Using traffic control equipment ◆ Setting up work zones ◆ Working around equipment The second day often features practical skills experience outside the classroom and a written or online exam. WorkSafe B.C. requires that any worker stopping traffic must be certified by a recognized training course. In 2009, 5,779 new traffic control persons were certified in the province and in total, there are almost 17,000 certified flaggers in B.C. Flagger safety was also in the news last
autumn when Jennifer Beauregard, 23, suffered a shattered pelvis and other serious injuries while controlling traffic. Beauregard was hit at 6:50 a.m. on Sept. 25, 2009, in Delta by the inattentive driver of an SUV who was texting and driving at the same time. The impact knocked her out of her boots, sending her five metres in the air, and she landed on her head 30 metres away from where she had stood with a traffic sign in her hand. Beauregard had her arm broken in five places, her pelvis shattered, all her ribs cracked, her spleen ruptured, and she had a severe brain hemorrhage. Beauregard, now the poster girl for WorkSafe B.C.’s Slow Down campaign, was in a coma for six days and in hospital for two months. As part of the safety campaign, Beauregard talks about her injuries in a sobering video aimed at getting motorists to drive slower through road construction sites. It’s not the first time that Beauregard’s plight has been highlighted. Last October, her fellow flag workers organized a rally on the Port Mann Bridge to educate drivers on the dangers flaggers face. The rally caused traffic mayhem, but the flaggers got the message out that their job involves working in busy traffic all the time. “We were not involved in that rally,” said Bluhm, who said the alliance does support the message of raised awareness for traffic control workers. And with seemingly more construction projects in the Lower Mainland set to continue throughout the rest of the year, flagger safety has never been a bigger issue. - with files from Postmedia Network Inc.

Two face murder charges in city case Patrick Leblanc’s body was found in the trunk of his car in New West on April 9

Two men have been charged in connection with the April 9 murder of 67-yearold Patrick Alexander Leblanc. The RCMP integrated homicide investigation team (IHIT) announced Tuesday that Glen Anhert, 28, was arrested in Brandon, Man. and Russell Benson, 38, was arrested in the Niagara region of Ontario. Both arrests occurred on Sept. 1. The two have been charged with the second-degree murder of Leblanc, a Vancouver resident.
Leblanc was found in an abandoned Cadillac in the back parking lot of Royal City Apartments at 225 Royal Ave. IHIT investigators announced in April that they believe Leblanc was murdered elsewhere. On Tuesday, IHIT investigators confirmed that theory, saying that investigators went to a warehouse in the 1800 block of Victoria Diversion in Vancouver and soon identified that warehouse as the location where Leblanc was murdered. After police searched the warehouse, they were able to advance the investigation, interviewing witnesses and securing evidence that allowed them to issue Canada-wide warrants for Benson and Anhert. On Aug. 29, IHIT investigators travelled to Brandon and the Niagara region to prepare for the simultaneous arrests of

Leave for work early, slow down, remain patient with the crosswalk guards and those little skipping children. You were there once. While you’re at it, give that tentative little kid on the corner a wave, and be nice to the teens working at their jobs. We wish them all well and Godspeed on their daily adventures.

t’s got a pretty good name, but can the B.C. First Party amount to anything more than yet another fringe party destined for irrelevancy? In most situations, I’d say the odds were extremely long that it would become anything more than a hobby horse for the handful of people involved in it. But with the B.C. Liberals teetering on the edge of disaster, it’s worth pondering what could happen if that party’s coalition of interests breaks up before the next election. And with the likes of Bill Vander Zalm and Chris Delaney lurking around the political landscape and continuing to poke the Liberals in the eye at every opportunity, all bets are essentially off when it comes to foreseeing how the centre-right vote in this province is going to be distributed come the next election. The B.C. First Party was registered with Elections B.C. by a couple of former Conservative activists, including one – Sal Vetro – who is directly associated with Vander Zalm (he was his official agent for the anti-HST

petition). They claim the party would brand itself as a centrist party, which could potentially appeal to a bigger pool of voters than the more narrowly defined B.C. Conservative party. But attracting the right kind of leader is one of the keys to any chance of even modest success. So far, neither Vander Zalm nor Delaney has said they are interested in joining the new party. Delaney is still active in the seemingly moribund B.C. Conservative Party, but he’s close to resigning because of prolonged in-fighting among the few people active in the organization. At the moment, both Delaney and Vander Zalm have a higher political profile than any other non-elected activist on the political scene. They are in the news constantly as a result of their successful petition campaign and will continue to be in the public eye as the government goes through what could be a lengthy process in determining what to do with the HST. Delaney’s been a party leader before, when he headed up the doomed Unity Party in 2001 (even getting a spot in the televised leaders’ debate in that year’s election campaign). And Vander Zalm, of course, is a proven campaigner and one whom the television cameras love (until he actually gets

If the HST were actually about raising more taxes to spend on our cash-strapped school system and underfunded public services, I would be all in favour. I agree wholeheartedly that people who whine and complain about having to pay taxes are shortsighted and foolish, as well as selfish. I find they are also often the first to complain about potholes in their roads, the waiting times for their surgeries and the exorbitant cost of their prescriptions. This is not a tax increase to pay for much-needed ◗Liberals Page 7 services and programs. In fact, the HST is designed
to be revenue-neutral to the province. Over most of my lifetime, we’ve already seen the tax burden shift further onto individuals, particularly those who have basic working (rather than investment) incomes. This is yet another shift to make the load on business lighter, at our expense. Poor single parents now have to pay tax on things like food and their kids’ clothes; these are many small increases to regular purchases that will add up and hit them hard. Physio treatments, elective surgeries and dozens of other services are now costing significantly more than they used to – but the money isn’t going back into the system to help those in need. The HST is merely an administrative adjustment to make less “red tape” for business, and they are the only ones who will benefit. Who should our tax system be serving?

Dear Editor:
I would like to comment about the 7Eleven being put in the lot on 20th and London Street, New Westminster. Once again the big guys come, destroying the little guys, such as our corner store, Hi-View Market, which has just finished a major renovation to the store, making it a great place to go to. And the little vegetable market, what happens to them? Trying hard to just stay alive, and then this happens to them – and, oh well, close up. The same thing will be happening to
PriceSmart in Queensborough once the Wal-Mart has put in the new market they are developing as we speak. I prefer the little guys. I understand how hard it is to be doing this on your own, and I for one will support them, not the big guys. 7-Eleven is also going to cause a hangout area to ensue as they all do, as well as yet more junk for the kids to access to eat. I wonder if the city has taken the time to poll the Connaught Heights area if they really want something like that in their area? I know the ones I have talked to said a definite no. For Westminster House’s development assistant Susan Hogarth, giving back is part of the journey she began several years ago. After 30 years of self-managing her addictions, she needed help. “I was out of control and full of shame, using one drug to help me manage my addiction to another drug,” she said in
a press release. Help from her daughter brought her to Westminster House in 2007. Hogarth said she not only feels grateful for her life, but wants to show it by living the way she was taught while she recovered. “When you’re living in addiction, you’re a broken individual who doesn’t care about much beyond taking your next drug,” Hogarth explained. “But as you recover,
things that meant nothing begin to mean so much: your appearance, your environment, your future. power, which is when his weaknesses come to the fore). While I don’t see Vander Zalm getting back into electoral politics (I think his wife, Lillian, would banish him to the garden if he did), I can see Delaney taking a stab at things. He’s a pretty good communicator, although his somewhat prickly personality may have to be held in check if he expects to make progress. In any event, the time seems right for someone or some party to seize the obvious anti-government sentiment that is building in this province and do something with it. The NDP always struggles with gaining even a percentage point or two in the popular vote in every election, so it would appear to have limited growth potential.
Of course, if the B.C. First Party mobilized itself and actually picked up a significant chunk of voters, it would virtually guarantee an NDP government because it would split the vote with the B.C. Liberals. The current situation has some striking parallels to the one this province faced back in 1991. Back then, a coalition government that had been in power for too long was crumbling right before our eyes. Its supporters went looking for an alternative, and for almost all of them the NDP certainly wasn’t that alternative. Then along came Gordon Wilson, who breathed life in the dormant B.C. Liberal Party and almost stole the 1991 election on the strength of a single, throwaway sound bite during the televised leaders’ debate.
But he succeeded in splitting enough votes to allow the NDP to win. Are we headed towards the same kind of scenario? Ordinarily, I’d say the idea would be far-fetched. But we are not living in ordinary times. Our political scene is fracturing, a fervent populism seems to be sweeping the land, and the desire for change is in the air. It seems the most unanswered question is not which party is going to win the next election (increasingly, that would appear to be the NDP), but which party is going to finish second. The odds favour the B.C. Liberals being that second-place finisher, but don’t completely count out any alternative, whether it’s B.C. First or something else. Noort Homes is accustomed to working on residential and commercial projects, but one of its latest endeavours is personal. The company has embarked on making substantial interior and exterior renovations to 401 Sixth St. Known as the Schofield Building, it’s located at the corner of Sixth Street and
Fourth Avenue. City council approved a development permit for the project, and work is now underway at the site. Merlin Wick, Noort Home’s development manager, said the building’s main floor is being retrofitted to accommodate the company’s corporate office. Existing tenants continue to occupy upper floors. “We needed larger office space and a bit higher pro-
file,” he said. “We acquired it with that in the back of our mind.” Since June 1980, Noort Homes’ head office has been located at Sixth Street and 11th Avenue in Burnaby. “We are doing an upgrade to the entire exterior, refacing all the facades to a degree,” Wick said. “We are refitting the main floor for our corporate office.”

Justin Morneau may be an all-star in the American League, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots. Morneau and his wife, Krista, have sponsored the multi-purpose room in the city’s new youth centre. The space will provide youth with an indoor gymnasium where they can host recreational programs and social activities. “Krista and I are very pleased our donation will help to furnish and equip this much-needed youth centre,” Morneau said in a press release. “Youth deserve a dedicated space so they can hang out with their friends after regular school hours and participate in customized recreational and social activities. Krista and I are happy to donate to such a worthwhile project in the city I was raised.”
A spokesperson for Morneau said the amount of the couple’s donation isn’t being disclosed but confirmed the multipurpose room would be named in the family’s honour. The spokesperson said Morneau is also working with Reebok to provide youth athletic equipment over the next couple of years. Morneau is a first baseman with the Minnesota Twins. “The youth of New Westminster are so excited about the Morneaus’ donation,” said Isabel Gomez-Garcia, a member of the city’s youth advisory committee and co-chair of the youth centre’s fundraising campaign. “It says a lot about how much they care about the youth in our city, and we are so grateful they recognize how important this centre is to our city.” The youth centre’s campaign website indicates that donors contributing more than $25,000 are Justin and Krista Morneau, Westminster Savings and Kraft Canada.

oyal City Farmers’ Market is dedicating its Sept. 9 market to one of its founders. Ilona Schachner, who was one of the market’s first vendors, passed away in June. To ensure that shoppers are aware of Schachner’s contribution to the market, organizers are erecting a stall in her honour and collecting donations in her name for the Canadian Cancer Society. “Ilona was part of the reason that RCFM attracted as many high calibre vendors as it did in its first year,” said an e-mail from Royal City Farmers Market. “With three other community markets opening the same year, it was challenging to find high-quality vendors. Ilona, along with Laila Axen from Arila Apiary, would go to the other markets she sold at and encourage vendors to give New Westminster and RCFM a try. She recognized the idea of building a community event. She loved New Westminster and was not only a well-respected member of the farmer market industry, she was also a proud business owner, with her shop, Vienna Treasures, on 12th Street.” The special market that’s being dedicated to Ilona Schachner takes place in Tipperary Park near Fourth Street and Royal Avenue from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9.

Eva Markvoort’s legacy continues to inspire people to raise funds for cystic fibrosis. The 25-year-old New Westminster woman lost her battle with cystic fibrosis in March. Beginning Sept. 7, Edward Chapman WOMAN and Circa Ici, in partnership with the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, are launching 65 Red Roses Passion for Fashion, a fundraising initiative that’s intended to raise awareness and funds for cystic fibrosis researchers. Earlier this year, 65 Canadian artists painted a single red rose for a piece of art that is now hanging in the front window of the Edward Chapman WOMAN flagship store at 10th Avenue and Granville Street in Vancouver. Until Oct. 30, every customer who donates $65 or more will receive a “65 Red
Rose” coupon for $65 off future purchases at all Edward Chapman WOMAN and Circa Ici stores. “Anyone who knew Eva knew how much she loved getting dolled up in beautiful dresses and shoes. She was glamorous and gorgeous and a total fashionista,” said Nancy Lyall, a buyer for Edward Chapman WOMAN and Circa Ici. Lyall’s son is the codirector of 65redroses, the documentary film about Eva’s life on the transplant list in 2007. Philip Lyall and Nimisha Mukerji were recently nominated for a Gemini Award for best direction in a documentary film for their work on 65redroses. “Eva’s love and legacy will continue to live in our hearts forever,” said Martina Mechkova, director of the Lower Mainland Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “We are very grateful to Edward Chapman WOMAN and Circa Ici for joining us in the fight against cystic fibrosis in honour of Eva. The funds raised through this initiative will accelerate the research efforts in our quest to find a cure for cystic fibrosis.”
Church history
The New Westminster Historical Society’s upcoming presentation will focus on the 150-year history of the Catholic Church in New Westminster. The presentation takes place on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the New Westminster Public Library’s auditorium. With 2010 marking the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Catholic Church in New Westminster, the presentation concentrates on images and stories of buildings associated with the Catholic Church in the community, including images of the early mission building, churches, schools, the convent, a relatively unknown monastery, a hospital, orphanages, a hall or two, and the cemetery. Anecdotes will refer to results of a violent windstorm, the response after the Great Fire 1898 and the opening of the St. Peter’s Cemetery. A walking tour of many of the sites mentioned in the presentation will take place on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m. from the corner of Fourth Street and Royal Avenue on the city hall lawn. ith the start of another school season, almost everyone’s lives become a bit more hectic – the
increased traffic on the road is a perfect example of this. Store-bought, premade breakfast bars are not always the healthiest solution to breakfasts on the run, so I want to share this recipe made with whole wheat flour, oatmeal and ground flax. Make them ahead of time and freeze each of the 16 bars individually. For those hurried mornings, microwave one bar from
frozen on high for 30 seconds, and you are out the door with warm oatmeal in your hand. Yes, the recipe does have butter in it for moisture and tenderness, but remember this makes 16 bars: That’s only just over two teaspoons of butter per bar. I hope this recipe will take a bite out of your busy mornings.

Church history explored
This year is the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Roman Catholic Church in early New Westminster – and a walking tour is being offered for those who want to find out more. A Sense of History Research Services is offering the tour on Sunday, Sept. 19. It starts at 1:30 p.m. on the front lawn of city hall, at Royal Avenue and Fourth Street. The tour will visit a number of sites that
have played a role in the Catholic history of the city since 1860 – including a reminder of St. Ann’s Academy, a reminder of Saint Mary’s Hospital, the site of St. Louis College, the site of the early St. Peter’s and St. Charles’ churches and more. The tour is free, takes about one-and-ahalf to two hours and goes rain or shine. There’s no need to pre-register. Anyone who wants to take part can just show up and join in the walk.

Oatmeal Breakfast Bars Recipe created by Chef Dez/Gordon Desormeaux 2 ¼ cups whole wheat flour 2 ¼ cups quick oats ¾ cup raisins 3 tbsp ground flax seed 1½ tsp baking soda 1½ tsp cinnamon 1 tsp salt ¾ cup butter, room temperature ½ cup Splenda Brown Sugar Blend 1 cup unsweetened apple sauce 1½ tsp vanilla extract 2 eggs Preheat oven to 350
degrees and prepare a nine-by-13-inch cake pan with baking spray. Tip: Line the pan with parchment paper, leaving the ends sticking out, to make the uncut product easier to remove from the pan once cooled. Combine the whole wheat flour, quick oats, raisins, ground flax seed, baking soda, ground cinnamon and salt in a mixing bowl. Beat the butter and Splenda Brown Sugar Blend together in a separate bowl. Add the apple sauce, vanilla extract and eggs to the butter and Splenda/ butter mixture. Continue
beating until thoroughly combined. Combine the mixtures in the two bowls together. It will be a very thick batter. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes until firm. Cool in the pan until room temperature – it is important for it to set up firm enough to cut into bars. Cut into 16 equal bars by removing the product from the pan first. Enjoy immediately or freeze individually. Makes 16 bars. Visit Chef Dez online at www.chefdez.com.

New website keeps an eye on daycares, schools CLASS ACT

arents who want more information about daycares and schools will be able to look up reviews on a new website called The Shorty List. The site collects parent comments and reviews of daycares and schools from all over Metro Vancouver, including New Westminster. The site, called The Shorty List, was created by Karen Young Chester,
a stay-at-home mom with two preschool-aged children. The Shorty List is up already but is only accepting comments and reviews. The site’s final launch will be at the end of October. “We are getting a good flow of reviews,” Young Chester said. “We are definitely looking for reviews from places all around Metro Vancouver.” Young Chester admits the anonymous nature of the site could lead to abuse, so she’s established some rules, and every post will be reviewed before it appears online. “We have a long list of regulations,” she said. The site will remove the names of specific individu-
als. She also plans to post up-to-date government statistics including school test scores, demographics, satisfaction survey results and daycare sizes. The site will include advertising, but not from the daycares, preschools or schools, Young Chester said. “We are a little bit unsure about how to do that and have a situation in place that there’s no conflict of interest,” she said. As another training camp wraps up for the Hyack Football program, excitement continues to build as we head into 2010 season. The Varsity and JV teams have had shown tremendous progress and enthusiasm over the past 2 weeks. The youth program is now better than it has ever been, with more success at the summer tournaments than ever before. In all there will be over 200 players on 6 Hyack teams this fall from

If it seems like you need this program more than usual to get to know your favorite football team, you’re not alone. But it won’t take long. Yes the varsity team may have graduated 22 players from last years team including 20 starting positions, but the cupboard is far from bare. While many of the names are different, this year’s edition of the Hyacks still has the ability to compete with the best teams in the province and win. Offensively the Hyacks hope to continue the fireworks of the past three years, with Andrew McKechnie taking over as offensive coordinator. Since introducing the Wing-T offense in 2007, New West has averaged 55 TDs per season and 34 points per game. It starts with Regan Eberding, who will be another in the line of outstanding Hyacks quarterbacks. Regan combines a good arm with outstanding athleticism. He has an exceptional grasp of the offense and the
Jr. Varsity A deep and talented JV team will step on the field in 2010 with hopes of advancing to the final four for the first time ever. It will start up front, where virtually all of last years starters are back Jordan Chin, Jonathan He and Yahia Gomaa are good enough to see plenty of playing time in varsity and will also lead the JVs. Leo Kubotani, Greg Levkine and Tyler Hill have all worked hard this offseason and will occupy key roles. Other linemen who could also make an impact
on either side of the ball are Mikah Jacobs, Patryk Gaviola and newcomer Arjun Venkatesh. Gr 9 Tanner Jorgenson will also contribute. While the majority of linemen on the JVs will be in grade 10, the bulk of the skill position players will be in grade 9, led by QB Tommy Robertson. Tommy’s arm has developed throughout the offseason and his attitude and leadership are outstanding. Tristan Sands has stood out among the backs, with his speed, toughness and experience. Prabh Bal, Pavan Mrock and Julian Ramirez will see plenty of time at the fullback and inside

game of football. James Belgrave and Manraj Bains will lead the way at the wing and halfback spots. Belgrave is the fastest player on the roster and maybe even faster than anyone in last years explosive backfield. Bains is a versatile, hard-working player who was an outstanding scout-teamer last year, and then won the off-season weight room competition this past spring. Ian Henderson and David Ramirez will handle the fullback duties. Both players are hardnosed aggressive runners who can grind out the tough yards. At receiver, Amit Bath is a consistent route runner with good hands and speed, while newcomer Anthony Baker, the athlete of the year in his grade last year, will also contribute. Up front, returning starters Jamie Wandell and Nick Adomat will anchor the offensive line and will be as good a pair of tackles as there is in BC. Gr 11s Derek Stagner and Michael Desjarlais and Gr 10s Jonathan He and Jordan Chin will round out the rest of the offensive line. Jeremy Wilson, along with Henderson and Stagner will see time at tight end.
Defensively the strength of this team may be in the secondary. Belgrave, Eberding, Bains and Jonathan Lopez will also see starting time and have the speed and athleticism to match most receivers. The linebacking corps will consist of Henderson and Ramirez on the inside, with Connor Brady and Kevin Sabau will providing a physical presence on the outside. Wandell and Adomat will provide plenty of muscle in the middle of the defensive line, while Stagner, Wilson, Makoto Brennen and Clay Alexson will make for a deep rotation at end. The defense showed what it could do in the final scrimmage of team camp in Oregon when it held Liberty HS (5A) of Oregon without a first down. The team also built plenty of chemistry in Oregon and followed that up with great attendance at summer weight room sessions. Most impressive has been the attitude and commitment of the returning seniors. While there are only eight of them, all are showing tremendous leadership and the coaches are excited about the prospects of working with them this fall.
LB spots. Other athletes that stood out through spring camp and team camp included Eric Teng, James Nicholas, Blair Huang, Stewart and James Sommerfeld. Mitchell Dozzi-Daigle and Mohammed Alyan will provide good targets at receiver. The JVs turned out in big numbers in the weight room this winter, reminding the coaching staff of the outstanding senior class that just graduated. There will be plenty of opportunities for the younger players to earn playing time and this team is sure to show huge improvement over the course of the season and in years to come. hyackfootball.com

The citizens of New Westminster have always supported the football program whole heartedly and we believe teaching social responsibility by giving back to the community is part of the foundation.

Recovery house hosts city cleanup

The folks at Westminster House are giving back to their community during Clean Up in New West. Westminster House, a recovery home for women, is holding the Clean Up New West event at Hyack Square on Sept. 11. Westminster House has been helping women recover from their addictions for more than 25 years. For Westminster House’s development assistant, Susan Hogarth, giving back is part of the journey she began several years ago.

After 30 years of self-managing her addictions, she needed help. “I was out of control and full of shame, using one drug to help me manage my addiction to another drug,” she said in a press release. Help from her daughter brought her to Westminster House in 2007, but change wasn’t easy. “I was in addiction for so long, it took two months for me to really want to leave that life behind,” Hogarth said. “After four months, though, I knew my life was changing dramatically.” Gratitude is a key ele-
ment of Clean Up in New West, during which teams of people will compete to clean up the most garbage and recycling from around downtown New Westminster. The day’s events will include family activities, such as face painting, a pie-eating con-
test, puck shoot and a chinlone (combination of sport and dance) demonstration. “For some people, gratitude is just a word,” said Sarah Franklen, executive director at Westminster House. “To the staff at Westminster House, it’s an action, it means actively
giving back.” Clean Up in New West takes place on Sept. 11 at Hyack Square. Registration begins at 11 a.m. for participants, with the cleanup contest kicking off at noon. Electronics to be recycled and clothing dona-

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words Jon Hameister-Ries - 67 I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta and didn’t begin playing football until my senior year at Strathcona High School when my team went undefeated and won the city and provincial championships – I’d say that was a pretty good start to my football career! Following my high school graduation, I had an opportunity to head south to continue my education and play football for the University of Tulsa, which was a long way from home but turned out to be one of the most positive experiences of my life. After four years on the Golden Hurricanes’ offensive line, I was excited to hear I’d be returning home to Canada after I was selected by the Lions in 2006 CFL draft. Now in my first full season on the Leos’ offensive line, I truly enjoy coming to work every day and playing football for a living. My teammates on the offensive line would do anything for each other and it’s good to know that the guys you’re going into battle with are people you can count on. From a very young age, I’ve always believed in the importance of higher education, which is why I completed my MBA at Tulsa last year. As a guy who has had a couple of injuries in his career, I know that football isn’t forever and it’s important to look ahead to the future in preparation for the next phase in life. For that reason, I really enjoy taking part in the club’s Lions in the House program. In today’s world, youth are faced with many decisions that can ultimately determine their future and it’s a good feeling to know that I might in some small way inspire a high school student to make positive life choices. xerstriding is a relatively new activity in Canada that entails walking with Nordic poles, which resemble cross-country ski poles. You may be slightly hesitant to use these poles while walking in fear of standing out; however, Nordic poles are catching on in Canada, and there will likely be Nordic walking groups popping up all over the country. Using Nordic poles while walking has many health benefits that you won’t get with regular walking. Studies have shown that Nordic walking increases your heart rate and burns up to 46 per cent more calories than walking alone. Exerstriding is a whole body workout that uses 90 per cent of the muscles
in your body. However, this activity is gentler on the joints than many other forms of cardiovascular exercise and won’t leave you sweating profusely or gasping for air. Exerstriding engages the core muscles while walking, and studies boast an average of 1,800 abdominal contractions with each mile of walking. Nordic walking poles are extremely easy to use. Simply grasp the handles lightly so that your arms hang comfortably at your sides. Let the tips of the poles gently rest on the ground behind you, then begin to walk as you normally would while dragging the Nordic poles behind you. Your arms and legs should alternate naturally with each pace, as they would with ordinary walking. To get all the benefits of Nordic walking, swing your arms a little higher in front of you without locking your elbows, as if extending your arm to shake someone’s hand. You will then feel the tip of each pole catching on the
ground behind you. To effectively engage your trunk muscles, more firmly press the edge of your hand onto the base of the handle. Keep your arm slightly bent at the elbow and let the motion come from the shoulder. Try to maintain as normal a stride as possible, and make sure the movement is fluid and natural. The technique is simple to learn and does not take much time to perfect, but if you feel like you need a bit more instruction, you can locate a class online to help with your technique. The New Westminster Salmonbellies will meet a battle-tested Peterborough Lakers club when they take to the floor for Game 1 of the 2010 Mann Cup championship series on Friday. The senior A Salmonbellies left for Peterborough today after two weeks of practice following the Lakers’ 11-9 victory over the defending Mann Cup champion Brampton Excelsiors on Monday. In the back of their minds is the memory of a four-game sweep back East by the Excelsiors in 2008. An even more painful recollection is the final moments of last year’s Game 7 that cost New West the title to Brampton in the 100th anniversary of the Mann Cup. But Salmonbellies team captain Nenad Gajic says that is all in the past. “We got beaten by a better team,” Gajic said. “We’ll take that and move forward. If we think much about what we had, we’ll forget what we have in front of us. That’s the way we’re going to deal with it.” Gajic admitted there is a part of him that wanted to take on Brampton one more time to square old wounds, but when push comes to shove, he says, the ’Bellies want to meet the best team out there. “We want to see the best there is so we can beat the best. At the end of

Few questioned believe the East perceives the New Westminster lineup in a similar way. Gajic dismisses the question out of hand. “In our locker room, I look around and see our super stars, and that’s all I worry about,” he said.
“I don’t want to wait until everyone accepts us as a top team.” One man who already believes is New Westminster head coach Bob Salt. “I’m not a God person, but there is a sports god, and that night, he was not on our side,” Salt said of last year’s final game at Queen’s Park. “It’s no excuse, you can blame us, we played the game. But how many times does Ilija (Gajic) make that play? And (Jordan) Hallsy hit the post twice just before that, and (Cliff) Smitty also
hit a post. We just weren’t going to beat (Brampton). We beat them, but they won the Mann Cup.” Salt too, defends his lineup. Believing that Ontario teams have all the talent is like buying into all the hype of the continental pro league, he said. “It’s B.S.” “We have a terrific offence. It’s going to be hard to check our team,” Salt said. But a Canadian title won’t be won on the skill up front alone, said transition defender Curtis Hodgson, who came to the
Salmonbellies in a trade from Victoria at the beginning of the season. “I think it starts with our goaltending, and one thing about our defence is depth,” Hodgson said. “We have a lot of big, strong, intelligent and athletic defenders. We showcased that in the Victoria series. It’s the deepest team I’ve played on. Varsity Hyacks spanked in season opener The New Westminster Hyacks were no match for last year’s Washington State finalist in their high school football season opener. The varsity Hyacks were handed a 40-0 loss by Kennedy High School Trojans at Mt. Angel, Oregon Friday. The No. 3-ranked 3A Trojans got five touchdowns from running back Derek Traeger, including one score on a punt return in the game. Ian Henderson and David Ramirez combined for 120 of the Hyacks’ 170 total rushing yards. On defence, the linebacking pair of Henderson and Ramirez were the best of New West with 10 and seven tackles, respectively. Kennedy rushed from 205 yards in total and created five Hyack fumbles on defence. “We moved the ball well on our first three drives, but then stopped ourselves by taking some needless penalties,” said New Westminster head coach Farhan Lalji. “We have some kids with a lot of ability, but they are starting for the first time, so it’s going to take some time for them to learn to deal with the pressure that comes with those expectations.” New Westminster hosts No. 1-ranked W.J. Jack Fulton could be the New Westminster Salmonbellies lucky charm at this year’s Minto Cup championships. Fulton just celebrated his 84th birthday on July 30, but the passionate Salmonbellie alumnus brings more to the table than just cake-on-the-candle wishes. In 1962, Fulton was the team manager of the senior A New Westminster club that went back East to win the Mann Cup, sweeping the Brampton Excelsiors in four straight games behind the MVP effort of the great Jack Bionda. Back then New Westminster earned the right to challenge for the Mann Cup following an unforgetable seven-game series

NCAA grid opener one to forget for varsity Clan
Simon Fraser University took a licking in its first-ever game in NCAA Division II football. The Clan was spanked 38-0 by the Western Oregon University Wolves at Terry Fox Field Saturday. Senior quarterback A.J. Robinson led the Wolves with a three-touchdown, 261-yard passing performance. Trevor Gates hauled in two touchdowns and four receptions for 69 yards. Justin Ore also caught four balls for 95 yards. Western Oregon outgained Simon Fraser 339 to 104 through the air. Clan starter Quinton Agosta and backup Ryan Schwartz combined for only 11 receptions on 33 passes between them. Gabe Ephard was the Clan’s leading rusher, carrying the ball 14 times for 64 yards. One highlight for the
Clan was the play of true freshman outside linebacker Casey Chin of New Westminster, the team’s leading tackler with eight individual stops. Kyle Bridge, Andrew Marshall and Justin Capicciotti all registered a sack apiece for the Clan. “It’s kind of like when you fight your older brother for the first time, you are going to get knocked around,” said SFU head coach Dave Johnson in a Clan press release. “I was actually very pleased with our effort. We didn’t quit in the second half, and really if was four or five major mental mistakes that led to their big plays.” The Wolves opened the scoring after just three minutes of the first quarter when Robinson hit Ore on a 49-yard TD pass. Clan men start first NCAA Division II soccer season on the right foot
Simon Fraser University’s Carlo Basso made beautiful music in the Clan’s first two varsity men’s soccer games of the season. The freshman forward opened the scoring in the Clan’s season opener against the University of Victoria Thursday en route to a 4-0 win. Basso then potted two more goals in a 6-1 rout over Vancouver Island University at home on Saturday. Basso tallied the first goal of his university career in the 13th minute, taking a long ball from Josh Bennett inside the 18-yard box and firing the eventual game-winner by the Victoria keeper to
the near post. Roman Doutkevitch added a second goal in the 28th minute. SFU scored twice more in the second half from last year’s leading scorer Alex Hanne and Manvir Brar off a deflection in the 88th minute. Hide Ozawa earned the shutout, although largely untested, as SFU outshot Victoria 20-4. On Saturday, redshirt freshman Lucas Ferritto tallied the eventual game-winning goal at the 30-minute mark just two minutes after subbing into the game. The Grandview Steelers open their Pacific International Junior Hockey League season against the Ridge Meadows Flames on Friday. The Steelers will have 20-year-old goalie Norbert Biszczak, picked up in a trade with North Delta, in goal. With just seven returning players this season, the Burnaby Winter Club-based junior B club is looking for bigger things from veteran playmaker Kenny Tanaka and team captain Curtis Rocchetti.
