Delivery of new garbage bins will soon begin for many Royal City residents. Starting in September, garbage and Cleaner Greener carts will be delivered to single-family homes in New Westminster. They’re part of the city’s new automated waste collection service that will get underway Oct. 1 and include the collection of garbage and yard trimmings. Under the automated collection system, waste will be deposited into carts that will be emptied by a mechanical arm on a truck. Workers will no longer have to lift and empty cans by hand. “We are still on for the Oct. 1 start,” said Jim Lowrie, the city’s director of engineering services. “The crews are training on the new trucks. They are here. The carts will be delivered to people’s residences. I think they are looking forward to it.” Lowrie said the crews have been giving positive feedback on the new trucks. In addition to reducing workplace injuries, the new automated collection program has environmental benefits. Residents will be able to include kitchen scraps (cooked and uncooked food, including meat and dairy) and foodsoiled paper into their greens cart. “The feedback we have received to date is residents are asking for that service,” Lowrie said. “It is part of the Zero Waste Challenge. The more we can divert out of the refuse stream, the better that is. That is a large part of it.”

Canadians from coast to coast got a chance to get to know the Royal City on Sunday. As a winner in the Kraft Celebration Tour, New Westminster earned a $25,000 donation from Kraft Canada for the new youth centre, a community barbecue and a live broadcast from TSN’s SportsCentre. “It went really well,” said Sandon Fraser, the city’s youth services coordinator. “It looks great on camera. The crowd looks great, really passionate.” City officials estimate about 2,000 people attended throughout the day, with about 1,000 people

Heritage Grant The Heritage Grant program is designed to assist New Westminster based heritage organizations with the delivery of heritage programs, projects, and events. Community Grant The Community Grant is designed to support communitybased projects for new and developing organizations, established organizations that work on a project basis, and organizations undertaking a special, one-time initiative. The projects must assist the City to fulfill its mission statement and accomplish strategic goals. These Grants are provided on a one-time basis for projects and will not be provided to fund the ongoing operation of the project. City Partnership Grant The City Partnership Grant is designed to assist not-forprofit incorporated organizations with the delivery of major events or services to the community. New Westminster city council has given the green light to a new commercial building on 20th Street. An applicant is planning to build a two-storey commercial building at 846 20th St., with 17 parking spaces where only 13 are required. On Monday, city council approved issuance of a development permit with variances, which relate to the placement of the building at the London Street property line. The zoning bylaw requires a side yard of 3.8 metres (12.5 feet) toward the London Street property line, but the applicant is proposing a 0.15 metres (0.5 feet) side yard. A letter from project architect Eric Pattison to city hall stated that the building will have up to three commercial retail units. “The right-in/right-out access from 20th Street is set as far as possible from the London Street intersection,” he wrote. “The building’s entrance at the southeast corner is chamfered to facilitate pedestrian access from 20th Street and the parking lot. Beyond providing an oversupply of parking, the development proposes to enliven the parking area and building’s setting with suitable trees and landscaping.” In the spring, the city’s transportation staff expressed concern about proposed vehicular access to the site. Area residents also expressed concern about the traffic impacts of the development, which may include a 7-Eleven store. Jim Hurst, a development planner with the city, said the applicant has since pulled the building back about two metres from 20th Street, which provides increased visibility that had been sought by city engineers. “They said they were be prepared to support it,” he said about their reaction to the current proposal. Vehicles will access the commercial building by right-in/right-out turns on to 20th Street. “What we need to do is it is not be attractive for someone to make a left turn in there,” Hurst said. “We will certainly try to set the driveways up so that is not a comfortable movement.” Mayor Wayne Wright said the commercial building provides a service for the neighbourhood. Some community members expressed a need for the project to

City prepares bylaw to borrow $3M if needed

The City of New Westminster is taking steps to borrow money if necessary. Council has approved a “revenue anticipation-borrowing bylaw.” A staff report to council says the city’s bank requires this bylaw to be renewed annually in order to provide the city with a line of credit that, among other things, protects the city from going into an overdraft position. The bylaw will enable the city to temporarily borrow up to $3 million, which is the city’s line of credit with the bank. The bylaw is necessary to ensure the city complies with the requirements of the Community Charter and meets the bank’s needs. – By Theresa McManus, staff reporter

Purpose: The purpose of this bylaw is to adopt the Downtown Community Plan as an Official Community Plan for the Downtown area of New Westminster. The Downtown Community Plan would become a Schedule to the Official Community Plan (OCP) thus amending the OCP to include changes made through the new Downtown Community Plan. Local resident earns international honour

Local broadcaster and Royal City resident John Ashbridge was named Tuesday as Crime Stoppers International’s 2010 Civilian of the Year at the organization’s convention in Halifax. The honour is the highest civilian award that Crime Stoppers bestows, and Ashbridge was lauded for “his selfless devotion, persistent service and significant contribution to a member Crime Stoppers program.” “I found out on Friday (Aug. 27), and I was really surprised because I didn’t even know I had been nominated,” said the former CKNW broadcaster, who is still wellknown for his announcing duties with the Vancouver Canucks, Vancouver Giants and during the 2010 Winter Olympics. “I think this reflects so well on the Metro Vancouver wing of Crime Stoppers

because Shirley Stocker won the award four years ago,” said Ashbridge. “She’s the one who got me into this, oh, 25 years or so ago.” Stocker, also a former CKNW employee, won her award in 2006 and was in Halifax to accept Ashbridge’s award. “The award is somewhere on a cruise ship in the Baltic because that’s where Shirley’s now on vacation,” said Ashbridge. Ashbridge is a member of the Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers board of directors and serves as the voice of Crime Stoppers, writing and producing the popular weekly Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week and Most Wanted – Mugshots features heard on radio stations and carried on Shaw Community Access TV throughout Metro Vancouver. Ashbridge also chairs the communications and marketing committee for Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers.

Private partners not the answer

Dear Editor:

Re: RCH set to grow, The Record, Aug. 25 I’m happy to read that Fraser Health intends to ensure the RCH expansion is designed to “meet the hospital’s clinical needs and the community’s needs.” However, news that the project would likely be a public-private partnership is concerning. The evidence clearly shows that public-private partnerships (P3s) are not an efficient use of public funds. They put corporate profits before public needs, and they limit public accountability and transparency. The private sector always pays a higher interest rate on borrowed money than the public sector does, and the shareholders in the P3 projects expect a profit that is built into the lease payments. P3 projects also come with additional layers of

legal, financial, and administrative bureaucracy – all of which cost money. P3s result in lower quality health care. It has been shown that the higher costs of private financing means there is less money for the clinical needs of patient care. The use of P3s to fund health services and infrastructure in the U.K. has been described as resulting in the largest bed closure program in U.K. history. P3s also limit accountability and transparency. I just wanted to say thank you to the City of New Westminster employees who are maintaining the gardens: they are simply outstanding. I live by Glenbrook Middle School, and the garden there is outstanding. Not to mention the fabulous job with the gardens in Queen’s Park. Thank you for creating such beautiful gardens of us. out in a recent Vancouver Sun column, there are two routes to becoming a refugee in Canada: You can get there from a refugee camp, or you can show up and say you would suffer persecution if returned home. The Sri Lankan government has been dismantling refugee camps since the war ended; it’s an open question whether persecution has ceased and one that will likely determine

the refugees’ fate. Finally, the notion of freeloading is also interesting. A lot of fury has surrounded the idea that these are only “economic migrants,” that they just want a better life, with things like clean water, good jobs and nice homes. Well, how dare they! Those things are clearly for those of us who were already here and inherited them without doing a lick of work settling this coun-

try. But of course, perhaps I’m biased. Aside from the recent arrivals from America, none of my family members ever applied for permission to come to Canada. The HST issue has been a thorn in our collective side not because it is an evil piece of legislation but because of its polarizing effect, and ultimately it is divisive for the wrong reasons. The political, legal and economic angles have been covered extensively, and yet we are none the wiser. The fight leading to the anti-HST campaign to recall the legislation and the proHST reaction to it would make Niccolo Machiavelli very proud indeed. But then, what is politics without a Machiavellian angle to it? And when you have the former premier, the Zalm, leading the attack on the entrenchment and the Gord defending the ramparts, you can rest assured that you will need all your wits with you to sort out the truth and half-truths out of what is being said. Ultimately, though, the answer to our HST dilemma can be explained by our own humanity. Tax in any form is repugnant because, in historical perspective, it alludes to a time when it was brutally exacted by an unscrupulous ruler. Regardless, the current situation was brought about by the accusation that the Liberals lied about it, bringing it in just a few months after they won a majority. Fair enough, except the fact that had they been transparent they would not have been elected. In this case, the antiHST is right. But what struck me after this is the demonstration of human frailty like gullibility, naivety and most damning selfishness. It appalled me to witness educated people lapping up all the arguments put forth by the Zalm and his forces, ignoring the facts presented by the pros. Did they really think that the government can move forward and satisfy the health and social programs people demanded without additional taxation?

How short-sighted can one be before he realizes that what he is advocating is simply selfishness? People are living longer, our population is rising and demands to our system are ever increasing, and yet what we hear is increase the minimum wage, renegotiate current labour contracts to best reflect the rising standard of living, etc. – and, by implication, to hell with the future generation. Just don’t raise our taxes. Is this normal human behaviour? I have always been of the impression that what separates us from the lower species is our ability to plan way ahead for our future generation and not just our ability to secure the present. The fight over the HST among other things tells me otherwise. We are willing to compromise the future of our children and their children after that in order to indulge ourselves on the present. Come what may, we would rather indulge in empty rhetoric about how corrupt those who we voted to represent us are than finding a solution so that the future world would be as pleasant as what we are enjoying today. No wonder we are our own worst enemy.

An Emory Street home will need repairs after a Sunday morning car accident in the quiet Queen’s Park area neighbourhood. According to Coun. Jonathan Cote, who lives two houses down from the house that was hit, the commotion started around 5 a.m. on Sunday, when he was awoken by the sound of screeching tires and a large crash. “It was quite the excitement in the neighbourhood,” said Cote. “I woke up, and when I looked out, there was a car that had driven into the basement and living room of my neighbour’s house.” Cote said the New Westminster Police

Service was on scene very quickly, and it appeared they were looking for four people who were in the car when it crashed. “We saw the police jumping into backyards and chasing after the people who were in the car,” said Cote. Cote said the homeowners had a restoration company looking at the damage on Monday. “They’re quite upset by what happened, and it looks like the foundation may be damaged,” said Cote. “It’s not often we get this type of excitement in this neighbourhood. … The neighbours were joking that when we had our block party earlier this summer, we didn’t get as many people as the people who came out to see what happened.”

consider the greenway along London Street and the traffic impacts on London Street. “What we are asking as residents is that council adhere to the policies set forth by the official community plan for 20th Street and ‘mitigate impact of traffic on adjacent properties’ by reconsidering the suggestion to close the present opening on London Street west of the development to allow for safe bicycle and pedestrian traffic,” said residents Karl Brysch and Mary Jane Najvar in a

letter to the city. “This closure should have minimal impact on the operation of any businesses.” Coun. Jonathan Cote said the intersection of London and 20th streets has always been challenging. Earlier this summer, members of the city’s bicycle and pedestrian advisory committee toured the London Street greenway, which runs from 22nd Street to the high school and connects with other greenways in the city. “Probably the major location we looked at was

20th Street,” Cote said. “We recognize this is an area that is going to need some work.” Cote said some residents and cyclists are concerned that vehicles leaving the building that want to turn left onto 20th Street would exit via London Street. He said commercial development is permitted under the site’s zoning, and staff feels the new siting is the best for the building. Cote said the 20th Street traffic study will consider the short- and long-term needs of that particular intersection.

Living a cycling dream T

wo city employees have an interesting “what I did on my summer vacation” story to tell. Jim Lowrie, the city’s director of engineering services, and Mitchell Edgar, manager of economic development, visited France during the Tour de France. The 97th Tour de France included 20 stages and covered 3,642 kilometres. “I cycled one of the stages – not with the pros,” Jim laughed. “It was fabulous. It was a wonderful experience.” Jim and Mitchell were among a group of cyclists who did one of the stages, about three days before the professional riders rode it themselves. Thousands of riders cycled through three mountain passes and narrow streets as part of the once-in-a-lifetime experience. “Every year they allow 10,000 riders to do this stage,” said Jim. “All of the French people are on their doorsteps waving. It was a really neat experience, a lot of fun.” In addition to cycling a stage of the Tour de France, the duo also watched three stages of the event – including the finale in Paris. In preparation for their 180-kilometre ride, they’ve been riding local mountains for the past few months, including a ride of Seymour, Grouse and Cypress in one day. Jim took 11 hours to ride his stage of the Tour de France route, noting that compares to the fiveand-a-half hours it takes the professional cyclists.

Salmon are part of city’s past OUR PAST

he news lately has been filled with comments about the sockeye run on the Fraser River and photographs have shown hundreds of fish boats vying for space in the various reaches of the river. This huge run is reminiscent of salmon catches from the past. Since our family has connections to the fishing industry stretching well back into the 1800s in B.C. and has been recognized, along with a number of other families, as a heritage fishing family, a comment

or two on past images of the B.C. salmon industry is in order. One of the first canneries on the Fraser was in the Sapperton area. It was near the Brunette River and used an old building or two from the Royal Engineers’ Camp. In time, there were a couple more on the New Westminster waterfront and another in Queensborough. Across the river, Annieville became a prime site, with its name drawn from the wife of James Syme, a canner and architect. Down river a bit on Lion Island, Alexander Ewen developed a major site, while across the channel were Glenrose (some buildings are still there) and St. Mungo. Canneries and fish processing plants were concentrated near Steveston at the river’s mouth, and there are stories of a couple

of dozen businesses lining the riverbank. We could go on for some time with cannery locations, but for now will mention Ladner, Port Guichon, Canoe Pass and Deas Island. The early fishing boats were open vessels, often rowed to the fishing grounds at the river mouth or upstream. Usually two men fished from these boats, sometimes using a small sail to move a bit faster from place to place, the catch from their nets then filling the boat itself as they struggled back to the dock. In some areas of the coast, these small fishing boats were towed, many at a time like a parade, by small steamboats. Favourite photographs of this time period show thousands of these boats fishing at the mouth of

the Fraser, and the huge catches of salmon being off loaded onto the docks for processing. Other related photos show workers in the canneries cutting the fish and filling the cans. Photos of this action usually show women and men, First Nations, Chinese and sometimes Japanese. Of course it is important to remember that for many thousands of years, the salmon of the river that we now call the Fraser was, as it continues to be, a staple of the First Nations who lived near this river. This was the food source the Hudson’s Bay Company at Fort Langley wanted to trade with the world. As you watch today’s fishery unfold, read about this industry and its history. It is a great story and an important part of this city’s past.

Whether you’re doing the daily commute, seeing the sights while on vacation, or just running to the neighbourhood grocery store to shop, there are things you can do to help make our roads safer. Here are some of ICBC’s smart driving tips: 1. Plan ahead: Beginning September 20th, police in B.C. will be armed with Canada’s toughest laws and penalties to get impaired drivers off B.C.’s roads faster and for longer. If your activities will include alcohol, take all the necessary steps to make sure you get home safe. Be safe – don’t drink and drive. Make plans to have a designated driver, take a taxi, public transit or call a friend or family member for a ride home. Remember – a true designated driver is a person who decides not to drink. Period. 2. Focus: Studies show that drivers who talk on a cellphone lose about 50 per cent of what’s going on around them, visually, and are four times more likely to get into a crash. If your cellphone rings while driving, let voice mail do its job and call back later. If you need to take the call, use

Riley Loewen got his Minto Cup ring. The Burnaby lefthander played a signficant role at the Canadian junior A lacrosse championships. Loewen, who came over to Coquitlam from Burnaby along with Nick Bilic and Brodie MacDonald in an earlier trade deadline deal, led the Coquitlam Adanacs in scoring in the final two games of the best-of-three Minto Cup final that culminated in an 8-4 victory over the Orangeville Northmen last weekend. The Minto Cup win was the first ever for the Coquitlam Adanacs. The victory also prevented the Northmen from joining an elite company of five other box lacrosse teams that have won three or more consecutive Canadian junior A titles. The last three teams to accomplish that feat were the Peterborough James Gang in the early 1980s, Burnaby Cablevision in 1977 to ‘79 and the Peterborough PCO’s in the early 1970s. The Oshawa Green Gaels, under the great Jim Bishop, won an unprecedented seven Minto Cups in a row during the 1960s. Brampton ABC’s also won three straight to end the 1950s. Loewen scored one goal and added three assists in the cupwinning game at the Coquitlam Sports Centre Saturday. On Friday, Loewen tallied a pair of goals and added one helper to give Coquitlam a 9-5 victory in the opening game of the series. Loewen finished seventh overall in Minto Cup scoring and fourth among Coquitlam shooters with six goals and six assists. But more than half of Loewen’s points came in the crucial last two games of the series. On Saturday, Loewen drew assists on Coquitlam’s two firstperiod tallies that gave the host club a 2-1 lead at the interval. With the game still close and Coquitlam leading 6-4 midway through the final period, Loewen spun off a defender and pot-

He then drew a third assist on Mark Matthews’ second goal from outside the circle. “I’m speechless. It doesn’t even feel real right now,” said Loewen. “We just kept on battling, even if we were leading. We didn’t want to slack off or anything. We wanted to keep it going.” And in a similar fashion to their five-game series win over

New Westminster, the Adanacs did it with a full 60-minute effort. In Game 1 of the series, Coquitlam overcame a 5-4 Orangeville advantage in the first frame to score five unanswered goals through the next two periods. In Game 2, the Adanacs outscored the Ontario champs by a 4-1 margin. The victory was as much a triumph for the Adanacs back end as it was for the Coquitlam offense

that was led by tournament MVP Robert Church, Minto Cup leading scorer Matthews with 27 points and righthander Ben McIntosh, who had a stellar championship run, including a championshipleading 12 goals. McIntosh scored a hat trick in Saturday’s final game. Dan Lewis, who was The Record’s Minto Cup MVP, won all five games for the Adanacs, while putting up a stellar .843 save percentage in goal for the Adanacs. Lewis stopped 31 shots to earn player of the game honours for the A’s in Game 1. He was even better in Game 2, stopping 40 shots as the Northmen outshot Coquitlam 44-30 in a gallant effort to tie the championship series. “Curt (Malawsky) had us working like a machine,” said Bilic, who garnered his only point of the Minto Cup in Coquitlam’s wild 15-12 win over Orangeville in the round-robin portion of the Minto championships. “Every game in the tournament was an investment – every game, every shift, every slash. We just gave 100 per cent every shift and it paid off for us,” said Bilic, who along with Loewen battled Coquitlam in two great playoff series the 2008 and 2009 B.C. playoffs. “Things happened. We all meshed real quickly. It was unexpected,” added Loewen. Where they were once bitter rivals, there is now a single family, and with that a common bond among teammates that can never be broken, they both added. “Even though I have my Burnaby friends, these are my boys from Coquitlam,” Bilic said. “This year, we were a team.” And none could be happier than MacDonald, who finished up his junior A career with a Minto Cup ring despite being used sparingly in the championship tournament. “It feels good, definitely good,” said the 6-7 Vernon goalie. “Yeah, I’ve never won anything before, not even a league championship, so this is a real change.”

The Burnaby Bulldogs are this year’s Baseball Canada’s senior men’s champions. Burnaby chucker Steve McCrea spoiled the host team’s party, winning a pitcher’s duel against Dartmouth starter Merek Deska to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory in the championship final Sunday. McCrea gave up just three hits, while striking out six Nova Scotia bat-

ters. Deska fanned 10 Burnaby batters in his three-hit effort over six innings. The winning run came off the bat of Kevin Atkinson, who crushed his third home run of the competition, a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth inning. The title-winning run was Atkinson’s ninth RBI at the championship. McCrea was near perfect the rest of the way, allowing just one Dartmouth

runner on base in the final three innings. In the semifinals, the Bulldogs avenged an earlier loss to New Brunswick in the tournament with a 6-2 victory to advance to the Sunday gold-medal final. Rob Harynuk threw a complete game, giving up just six hits, while Jeff Sheppard of Burnaby got the Bulldogs started with a two-run double in the bottom of the second inning. He later scored on a runscoring single by Mike

Elias. In the third inning, Atkinson connected on his second home run of the competition, bringing home Brian Briscoe from second base. On the opening day of play, the B.C. respresentatives were blanked 8-0 by New Brunswick. Burnaby came back the following day with an 8-4 win over Alberta champion Red Deer. Tim Fehr got the win, going seven innings while giving up 11 hits.

The Simon Fraser University Clan will be making its NCAA Division II debut this Saturday on the gridiron. The varsity Clan are hosting Western Oregon University in their debut in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at Terry Fox Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. SFU first played in the NAIA under U.S. college football rules from 1965 to 2001 before joining Canadian Interuniversity Sport for eight seasons. This season marks the return to the four-down American game. Santa Rosa junior college transfer Quinton Agosta is expected to be the starter on opening day. Burnaby rookie Stephen Spagnuolo, a Notre Dame Regional grad and provincial all-star who led the B.C. high school in rushing last season, is expected to see the backfield at some point this season. Senior running back Gabe Ephard, who averaged 7.7 yards a carry in 2009 will likely get the start in the back field against Western Oregon. Mathis Baumbach, SFU’s top returning receiver from 2009 and San Mateo transfer B.J. Bryant are expected to be the targets for Agosta in the opener. Along the offensive line, Brad Erdos is the lone returning starter from last season and is a lock at left tackle. Senior Kris Gluppe is expected to move into the starting role at left guard, while former defensive tackle Connor Reh has moved to provide more depth to a young and relatively inexperience O line. St. Thomas More grad Marc DesLauriers was injured in training camp with a bruised heel and is expected to move into the safety spot when healthy. Moscrop grad Jeff Biles will return to his kicking duties for his senior year after missing last season with knee problems. Biles will handle both the placekicking and punts for the Clan. “We have to be able to make this transition (to American rules) without any major hiccups,” said SFU head coach Dave Johnson, in a Clan press release. “Offensively, we are still discovering our identity. We are going to have a multiple set offence, and because we are very young, we are going to use a lot of misdirection and quick hits. “Defensively, we are a little more established. We have more returning players and we are very athletic, particularly up front on our defensive line.” The expanded GNAC schedule will see SFU play 10 regular season games, including five home games, four of them coming in the first five weeks of the schedule.

The junior ‘Bellies averaged just six goals a game during the Canadian championships, including nailbitingly close 6-4 loss to the defending two-time Minto Cup champion Orangeville Northmen in the tournament semifinal last Friday. New Westminster scored a total of seven goals in two games against the Northmen, while potting seven in a four-goal loss to the eventual Minto Cup champion Coquitlam Adanacs in pool play. The lack of firepower, despite the lack of the league’s top scorer Tyler Digby who was missing because of athletic scholarship priorties with Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was evident. So too was the overall lack of team speed compared to that of the B.C. and Ontario provincial champions. These two areas are what junior Salmonbellies general manager Doug Zack hopes to address next season. “You look at this Orangeville team, and the West is always trying to copy the East. They’re highly skilled and are quick in transition,” Zack said after the semifinal loss. “We’d love to have that and be

The Royal City Hyacks community football club won the flag division at the 41st annual Bronze Boot tournament in Surrey last weekend. The five- to seven-year olds took first place overall with an undefeated showing, following an 8-7 victory over the defending champion Cloverdale Cheetahs in the final. Andoso Dancey was the hero, booting a last-second field goal for the win. Dante Baylis led the Hyacks offence with numerous touchdowns. Tyler Duprey-Steinman was the standout on defence. Willem Barnard had an outstanding day on the kick-return team, while Nicholas Dujmovic and Graham Armstrong anchored the offensive and defensive lines. The eight-and nine-year-

old atom Hyacks earned the second-place trophy at the Sun God tourney in North Delta. New Westminster rebounded from an opening loss to host North Delta with a 30-0 victory over the North Langley Bears. Shaye Rathjen made over a dozen tackles on defence, caused two fumbles and recovered one of them. Defensive backs Arjen Bal and Evan Pattison also had multi-tackle efforts for the Hyacks. THIERMAN, George George lived life to the fullest until his passing August 25, 2010 at St Paul’s Hospital at the age of 92. George fought through rheumatoid arthritis, prostate cancer and most recently colon cancer. His colon surgery went well but he succumbed to complications following the operation. George was born in Portage la Prairie Manitoba March 16, 1918. He moved his family to BC for the second time in 1965. George loved golf and horse racing; spending many hours at each. He was a great provider and would do anything to help his family. George took great pride in working for H. A. Simons Consulting Engineering for over 30 years. His storytelling will be missed by all his family and friends. George was predeceased by his loving wife Tillie and is survived by his children Kathy (Gary), Theresa (Dave), Patrick (Dale), Joe (Gail), John (Doris), David, Andrew and his grandchildren Christina, Caitlin, Laura, Alex and Julie. George will be greatly missed. Prayer Service will be held Wednesday, September 1st at 6:30 pm. with a Funeral Mass Thursday, September 2nd at 9:30 am at St. Frances de Sales Church, 6651 Balmoral Street. Burnaby, BC.
