The new owner of the Paramount Theatre and the Dupont Block is committed to maintaining the heritage properties but isn’t making any commitments about the use inside the former Edison Theatre. David Sarraf was intending to buy the Dupont Block at 642 Columbia St., when its owner suggested he also buy the Paramount Theatre that he also owned next door. A two-year-old tabby cat named Harley, who was thought to be on the road to recovery after being dunked in a corrosive chemical by an unknown suspect last month, had to be put down over the weekend. The cat leaves behind a traumatized eight-yearold boy and a crippling vet bill – only two-thirds of which has been raised through fundraisers to aid the cat’s owner, Jennifer Szoke. “He had a relapse and went into distress, and although the vets were able to stop it, they discovered that the scar tissue in his esophagus had caused it to be so small they couldn’t even fit in a tube,” said Szoke. “There was nothing they could do.” The decision was made to put the cat out of its misery on Saturday. Record photographer Jason Lang happened to be passing through the downtown recently just as crews from the hit sci-fi television series Supernatural were shooting a scene where two stuntmen plummeted head-first out a window. The combination of lights, cameras and action is becoming an increasingly common sight these days as New Westminster finds itself gaining a growing reputation as a good place to shoot films and television. “The town is so friendly to a large extent, and that makes the film companies want to come here,” said Scott Harper, the city’s filming coordinator. “Location managers like to go with places that are relatively easy to shoot at.” Last year in particular was a banner year for the city. Fifty-one permits were issued in 2009, resulting in $294,400 in revenue, a whopping 65 per cent increase over 2008. One film (or series of films) in particular is a monster reason for the increase and has even spawned an offshoot cottage tourism industry. Several scenes from Stephenie Meyer’s hugely popular Twilight Saga were partially filmed here, which resulted in countless paparazzi and fanatical “Twi-hards” descending on the city hoping to see one of the stars during filming, and later fans eager to see the setting in real life. “It’s crazy and so hush-hush when they come here,” said Harper. “There’s

people that come from all over the world just to get a glimpse.” For many people, mostly young females, the appeal of the Paramount Theatre isn’t exotic dancers, it’s for being where Bella went on her first date with Jacob, and there are now several companies that include stops on Columbia Street as part of special guided tours of local Twilight zones. Other major Hollywood features with scenes recently shot in the city include I, Robot, Blade, Shooter, Watchmen, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Along with

Supernatural, recent TV series shot here include Fringe, Smallville, Human Target, Hellcats, Caprica, and Stargate Universe. “In the old days it wasn’t that easy to film here, there wasn’t anybody specifically handling filming, said Harper. “Since then it has become a good revenue generator for the city with lots of other spinoffs for local merchants.” City council is so committed to keeping the cameras rolling, it occasionally make its own chambers available, as anyone who watches the CBS drama The Good Wife might already know.

The New Westminster Police Service has issued a warning about a charity scam. In recent weeks, the police have been investigating two separate debit card frauds involving a debit card skimmer. In each instance, a victim was con-

tacted, either in person or by phone and solicited to donate to the Cancer Society of B.C. Subsequently, a woman then came to the victim’s home and swiped the victim’s debit card with a portable debit machine. The victims later determined that their debit cards had been used in fraudulent transactions. The female suspect is described as a

Caucasian, 20 to 25 years old, with olive skin, brown eyes and long, curly brown hair. The woman is approximately six feet tall, with a slim build, wearing a short skirt and high heels, and carrying a clipboard and portable debit card machine. The police are also offering advice to people who are donating to charities. “Ask questions and don’t give a

donation until you’re satisfied with the answers,” said Const. Bruce Carrie in a press release. “Charities with nothing to hide will encourage your interest. If necessary, ask the person to return after you have confirmed with the office of the charity that there is indeed a campaign going on and that they have authorized the charity drive that you’re being invited to contribute to.”

No one on board has yet been linked to any war crime during Sri Lanka’s long and terrible civil war; simply being Tamil doesn’t make someone a Tamil Tiger. What’s more, Tamil groups in Canada contend that at least some of the passengers have legitimate refugee claims. Let us not forget that when the Komagata Maru returned to India, 19 of the passengers were shot by police and killed.

If Tamil refugees are returned to Sri Lanka, it’s possible they will also face retribution from the government in Colombo, especially now that they have been branded as terrorists. The Conservative government would be wise to remember their own apology for the Komagata Maru incident. These Tamil migrants deserve a fair hearing, and rushing to judge them doesn’t help to protect Canadian shores. Let’s not lay the groundwork for tomorrow’s apology.

Ready for Premier Carole James? IN THE HOUSE

know the next provincial election won’t occur for another couple of years yet (barring successful recall campaigns in a bunch of ridings before then), but it isn’t too early to start thinking what an NDP-led government is going to look like. While party leader Carole James hasn’t been able to completely silence her critics on the left, the odds remain quite good for her being called “Premier Carole James” after that election is over. But who else will form the face of such an NDP government? Who will be the cabinet ministers, and which will be the ones to whom James gives the most responsibilities? As in any political party, there is a pecking order in the NDP caucus. There is the A team, the B team, perhaps even the C team. Those on the A team will likely be the top cabinet ministers, along with a few in the B circle. Those in the other groups are destined for lengthy stays on the backbench unless they show more talent. And now to name some names, at the risk of bruising a

few egos along the way. There appear to be roughly 10 MLAs in the top group. They are the ones who ask most of the questions during question period (always a clue to who is considered the strongest by their leader and her top lieutenants) and are put forth in the media for stating party positions. In this group, I place house leader Mike Farnworth, health critic Adrian Dix, energy critic John Horgan, finance critic Bruce Ralston, justice critic Leonard Krog, social critic Shane Simpson, small business critic Jenny Kwan, environment critic Rob Fleming, caucus chair Norm Macdonald and caucus whip Katrine Conroy. I’d be very surprised if any of these people were not included in James’ first cabinet (assuming they all win re-election). It’s unlikely they will be given cabinet posts that match their critic positions, though (Mike Harcourt once told me one of his biggest mistakes was doing just that – simply pushing critics into the portfolios they’d been monitoring). But there may be two exceptions. Ralston is a good bet to be finance minister, and Krog (as a lawyer) seems a natural fit with the attorney general position. Others to keep an eye on include Surrey MLA Sue Hammell, who was a cabinet minister in the previous NDP government, newcomers Doug Donaldson, Kathy Corrigan,

Petition must go to legislature Dear Editor:

People in every community in British Columbia should be outraged at the refusal of Elections B.C. to send the successful anti-HST petition back to the legislature. The fact that some large corporate backers of the B.C. Liberals are challenging Elections B.C. is no surprise, but for Elections B.C. to thwart the democratic process of this difficult citizens’ petition initiative, and the wishes of an overwhelming 700,000 registered voters, is alarming. I believe that Craig James of Elections B.C. has wrongfuly yielded this petition to the courts, even though the British Columbia legislature is where this law was enacted and the legislature is where this law is being returned by the citizens of British Columbia.

The people of B.C., including many small business people, have spoken out in opposition to the HST legislation, and they do so in quite a simple term – it’s a tax shift that they oppose with extreme prejudice. If the delay to wait for the courts is allowed by Elections B.C., it will in effect have imposed a greater power onto itself than our lawmakers or our citizens possess. The act of petition or recall was designed so that citizens could take action on legislation or on an individual MLA, prior to the next election. If Elections B.C. allows for a process where a matter could be delayed in a court past the next provincial election, they will have inadvertently repealed and extinguished this important legislation, and that, I believe, is an authority that goes beyond their mandate.

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened my latest electric bill from the City of New Westminster to find enclosed some information which encouraged individuals to consider registering as organ donors. This topic is especially relevant with the International Transplantation Society currently holding its 23rd congress in Vancouver. There are 4,500 Canadians on transplant waiting lists, and 260 individuals die each year while awaiting transplants. It was noted in the city’s flyer that 85 per cent of B.C. residents have intentions to register, but only 17 per cent have done so. I hope the good people of New Westminster will take note of the need and register their intentions. Organ donation is a gift of life. Please take the time to register. Who’s intolerant here? Dear Editor:

Re: God a man-made concept, Letters to the editor, The Record, Aug. 14. I am not surprised by L. Kammel’s particularly coarse letter vilifying opponents by attacking the object of their faith. The tone of the letter clearly smacks of the same hate and bigotry Kammel is arguing against. We live in a democracy, and we are entitled to voice our views no matter how wrong or right, gay or not. The irony that those who accuse Christians of being “intolerant” are often the ones who “tram-

ple upon the freedom of others to express their religious and moral commitments” haven’t escaped me. The victims of this legally sanctioned intolerance aren’t only Christians – it’s all of us. The alternative to religious liberty isn’t “tolerance,” it’s what Alexis de Tocqueville called “soft despotism” – government by rules and regulations. Voltaire advocated civil liberties, including freedom of religion: “I die adoring God, loving my friends, not hating my enemies and detesting superstition.” In my opinion, he died as a Christian, even though it wasn’t in the eyes of a cultish Church that had changed into something that even Jesus wouldn’t have recognized. And atrocities? Let me state this, which most people – including media – miss: In the last century alone (1900 to 1999), more atrocities were committed under the name of the atheistic communism – 110 millionplus deaths, compared to all the Crusades, inquistions and reformations put together, sad events that Jesus would never, never teach (1.35 million deaths). I could go into much about God’s existence or the logical basis of the faith, but I know it would be pointless for persons like Kammel to really have an open mind (note the irony). I respect Kammel’s opinion, but I for one would like to see it backed up with real facts rather than simply uttering offensive remarks, and open up some real dialogue to bring everyone together rather than keeping sides apart. Another quote to what I hold dear is again by Voltaire: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Derrick Dong, New Westminster

Whoever wins in Kamloops and/or Prince George will likely be in cabinet, since regional representation is always a factor in putting together a cabinet. So start paying more attention to those MLAs right now. The odds are good they’re going to be deciding how your tax dollars are spent before too long. ◗ It’s time everyone cut interim chief electoral officer Craig James a little slack. His controversial decision not to immediately pass the anti-HST petition on to the legislative committee responsible for dealing with it has been

met with a near-hysterical reaction. I wrote a short time back about the irrational anger that is strangling reasoned debate in this province, and the venom aimed at James is an example of that. Those who insist his actions are somehow an assault on democracy are making exaggerated claims. The legislature committee will not even sit until sometime in September at the earliest, so whether or not it receives the petition right now is irrelevant. As well, it’s unlikely the committee will take any action until it gets a sense of what’s going to happen to the two court challenges involving the petition. Finally, the legislative bill to repeal the HST will not be introduced in the

legislature until the spring (if that is indeed what the committee opts for). So there is no urgency here. While I personally feel James should have indeed sent the petition to the committee, his failure to do that hardly creates some kind of intolerable anti-democratic atmosphere. If, by the fall, the committee still doesn’t have the petition, then we may have a problem. But one does not exist right now. And those conspiracy buffs who darkly ascribe partisan motives to James’ decision are wildly offbase as well. I’ve known the man for more than 20 years and can attest to his integrity and independence. So, everyone: calm down. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

oyal City residents may want to mark Aug. 21 on their calendar if they’re in the mood for bargains or some community fun. The fourth annual Quayside Festival and Sale is taking place on Saturday, Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. along the waterfront boardwalk. It’s estimated 5,000 to 10,000 people attended last year’s festival and sale, which featured 150 tables selling a wide variety of items, including house wares, sporting goods, clothing, books and more. In addition to providing a venue where people can shop and recycle, the event features a kids’ zone at Hyack Spirit Square, live bands on two stages (Legal Limit and the Knots), food and beverages and more. The event was founded by the Quayside Community Board, but is now being held in partnership with the Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Society and its merchants. The Quayside Festival and Sale is being held along the riverfront boardwalk from

Reliance Court to the River Market, at Hyack Spirit Square and up Columbia Street. Organizers have planned a day that’s intended to bring family and friends together to shop and enjoy themselves, to provide an opportunity to recycle items by selling them to others instead of sending them to landfills, and to raise awareness about social issues. People are encouraged to bring nonperishable donations for the food bank and drop them off at Reliance Court (headquarters for Quayside Community Board organizers). The Lions Club will once again be selling barbecued hotdogs and chilled beverages. A raffle, supported by many area businesses, will raise funds for Royal City Musical Theatre Society and other local charities. Any unsold items will be donated to local thrift and hospice organizations.

Mayoral history

Dale Miller is leading a tour about the mayors of New Westminster on Aug. 22. A Sense of History Research Services is presenting the free tour, which takes about oneand-a-half to two hours and runs rain or shine. The City of New Westminster held its first civic election in August 1860 – the first city in Western Canada to have a municipal form of government. Back then, the mayor was called a president. In recognition of this anniversary, the local historian will lead a cemetery tour in Fraser and St Peter’s cemeteries, where she will introduce a selection of the city’s mayors. The tour will start on Sunday, Aug. 22 at 3 p.m. near the office of the Fraser Cemetery on Richmond Street. Pre-registration isn’t required.

A New West couple living across from Queen’s Park recently discovered their living room had become a hive of activity without their knowledge. Judy Dixon said she and her husband Bill rarely use the room during the summer, and consequently don’t clean it much. She said she was surprised recently while dusting to discover a pile of dead insects on one of the room’s windowsills. After guessing that an open chimney flue was the only way they could have gotten into the house since all the windows are kept shut, she decided to poke her head in the fireplace. “It wasn’t what I saw but what I heard that gave me my answer,” said Dixon. “I was instantly transported to a small World Cup soccer game going on up the chimney complete with hundreds of vuvuzelas.” She wasn’t certain, however, if the buzz was coming from bees or wasps. She called a friend who had taken a beekeeping course and was told they were honeybees. “My husband was unconvinced by novice identification and so took a sampling in a jar to a pest control company,” she said. “’Nope,

I felt that the second opinion was self-serving and so we needed a tiebreaker. We called a gentleman who removes honeybees, and he came to give a look. ‘Yup, those are honeybees all right.’” It’s just as well the couple sought out a third opinion, as their initial plan was to start a fire and smoke the insect interlopers out. “We looked online and discovered that basically we would just be redecorating once the whole house smokes up.” Or worse. According to bee expert John Gibeau of the Honeybee Centre, “nests have to removed because when the person starts a fire, it’ll melt the wax and the wax will drip and start a chimney fire. So somebody has to go up there

and scrape the wax off. It’s less important with a wasp nest – which I’ve never, ever seen in a chimney in my life anyway – because it’ll just go up in a puff of smoke.” Although honeybees are considered highly endangered, and it’s estimated that the world loses a third of its bee population each year, it is still legal to destroy bees’ nests in B.C., and Gibeau said many pest control companies – whose workers aren’t always trained to tell the difference between wasps and bees – simply destroy honeybee nests rather than remove them. “The way we can tell even over the phone is by describing the nest,” said Gibeau. “Honeybee nests have to be in a cavity, usually something around the size of a microwave oven, while a wasp nest is usually in a tree and is made of grey paper quite unique from wax.” In the Dixons’ case, the hive was successfully relocated to the Honeybee Centre. “We managed to save two great big containers of them,” said Dixon, who says the couple have since installed a screen over their chimney flue and are considering installing permanent bee hives on their roof. “People need to be – ha, ‘bee’ – aware that if you have something like this, there are solutions to it, and the Honeybee Centre is a really great resource.” Visit www.honeybeecentre.com or call 604- 604-575-BEES for more information.

illing potholes, planning neighbourhoods, picking up garbage are but a few of the many jobs carried out by city employees. Some city employees have lesser-known duties that fly under the radar. We’re highlighting some of these jobs in our ongoing Odd Jobs in the City series. This issue, Theresa McManus talks to Maryann Janzen, a library assistant with the city.

t’s pretty safe to say that Maryann Janzen is one of the few city employees who gets to use a guillotine as part of their job. Janzen, a 20-year employee with the New Westminster Public Library, has a variety

of duties in her job as a library assistant in the library’s technical services department. One of those jobs is to mend 300 to 400 books, CDs and DVDs each month, a process that extends their lives and allows library patrons to continue enjoying those items. “Some books cannot be replaced or they are hard to find, so it is good to get a few more years out of them,” Janzen said. Chief librarian Julie Spurrell said the library generally mends books that can’t be replaced or items where it makes financial sense to mend rather than replace. “It takes a lot of patience,” Spurrell said about mending. “What she does is very interesting.” Janzen did some mending in the Vancouver Public Library system years ago and then learned some additional skills from her mending predecessor

at the New Westminster Public Library. “She taught me her tricks,” said Janzen, who finds other techniques through searching the Internet. “I love it. It’s a job with lots of variety.” Janzen’s workspace has assorted tools that help her with her mending, including tape in various colours, glues and heavy objects that can hold pages of a book in place while mending is done. IN A guillotine standing in the corner of Janzen’s workspace allows her to cut the outer edges off a book whose pages may have been written on or dirtied. “This is my baby. It is probably about 140 years old,” said Janzen, noting other city employees were able to replace its blades about a year-and-ahalf ago. “When a book comes to me

and people have written on it or it’s really dirty on the edge, you can still borrow it, but gee, it just doesn’t look so good. I am going to trim off a little bit of it.” A couple of other library employees also know how to use the guillotine, as they use it to cut paper to specific sizes. The guillotine may remove writing on the outside edges of books, but Janzen needs other tactics for dealing THE CITY with writing done on interior pages. Fine sandpaper can be used to remove writing and dust from books, but it’s not something that can be done often because the pages will wear out. If a page is missing or has to be replaced because it’s ripped or written on, Janzen can borrow the book from another library, copy the page and insert it into the right place in the

book. Janzen said it’s unfortunate that some people write in library books, but she does her best to remove the offending text. Names and phone numbers are the most common things written in books, but grocery lists and other things have also been spotted. “People like to write in political, religious and self-help books,” she noted. “They like to write in the margins.” Sometimes the bindings of books start to fall apart. Fixing this can require glue and tape. “When I am mending children’s books, the coloured tape is good,” Janzen said. Heavy metal pieces of a train track, a brick wrapped in heavyduty paper and insulators from electrical transformers are some of the items Janzen calls on to hold pages down or apply pressure to books under repair. books to the library that are wet, perhaps having fallen in the tub, been in a wet backpack or gotten exposed to rain. Janzen places sheets of paper towel between the pages, closes the book and places something heavy on top. “It is going to wick the moisture out,” she explained. Janzen’s toolbox also includes modern gadgets such as the Disc-go-Devil. A liquid chalk in the device helps take scratches off DVDs and CDs, a process that takes five to eight minutes per disk. “The reward is seeing the finished product,” Janzen said. Notes such as “this video stops 20 minutes in” allow Janzen to hone in on the problem, as she can’t sit and watch a two-hour DVD to ensure it’s no longer skipping. Janzen said most libraries have some mechanism for mending books, whether they send it out or do it in-house. If Janzen receives a book in the morning, there’s a good chance it will be mended by the afternoon. The New Westminster Public Library has books that are 80 to 100 years old, most of which are in the special collections and aren’t available for borrowing.

You treat it like gold.” Janzen notes there are people who specialize in antiquarian books. Librarians make the call about what items to repair and forward any suitable items to the technical services department. Part of Janzen’s job is to mend books that have been damaged, but she also creates plastic covers to prevent softcover books from being marred. The mending service is

available only for library materials and not offered to the general public. In addition to her mending jobs, Janzen has been labelling the spines of the New Westminster Public Library’s book collection. While the fiction collection is already labelled, it’s now being done to non-fiction books. The labels will show the category (mystery, science fiction, romance, etc). and the first four letters of the author’s surname, ultimately saving time when it comes time to reshelve books. Janzen has received positive feedback about

the labelling as she works among the public. “I don’t see the public that much except when I am downstairs doing this labelling,” said Janzen, whose upstairs office is out of the public eye. Janzen also helps create paperwork required for interlibrary loans that has books being shipped via Canada Post. “I’ve just sent one to P.E.I.,” she noted. “There is a lot of paperwork that goes with them. Very rarely does a book go missing.”

Poets from the Lower Mainland, including New Westminster, are gracing the stage at Vancouver’s Summer Dreams Literary Arts Festival this coming weekend. Summer Dreams is put on by Pandora’s Collective, a Vancouver-based writing group. New Westminster poet Ariadne Sawyer will be hosting the reading at the festival between 3 and 3:15 p.m., along with another New West poet from the world poetry reading series, Alejandro MujicaOlea from Chile. Persian poet Masume Mahasti, from New West, will also be reading, as will Vancouver’s Anita Aguirre Neveras, originally from the Philippines. The poets will read in English, Spanish, Farsi and Tagalog. The idea began 12 years ago when Mujica-Olea approached Sawyer after being turned away from another writing group because he wanted to read in Spanish, she says. “The lady was rude to him,” Sawyer says. “She told him to go home and learn English.” So Sawyer decided to start a group that was inclusive of other cultures and languages, with readings conducted in English as well as a second language. “They’ve had doors shut in Canada,” Sawyer says, explaining that many of the writers are well established in their countries of origin. “It’s fun to see people given support

and respect and honour become more confident,” Sawyer adds. Members of the group range in age from the youngest, who is nine years old, to 97. There are more than 500 participants. The World Poetry Series started at Urth Coffee House but had to move quickly when the café closed. The New Westminster Library offered the poets a space for the last reading meant to take place at the café and has since given them a permanent spot. World Poetry New Westminster will celebrate its one-year anniversary on Oct. 25. The World Poetry series is held on the fourth Wednesday of every month, at 6:30 p.m. in the library auditorium. The poets are preparing for a few book launches in September, including MujicaOlea’s book of poetry, which is being released in the United States. The group will be at Vancouver’s Word on the Street Festival in September, as well as the Summer Dreams festival. Prominent poets Susan Musgrave and Evelyn Lau will also be at Summer Dreams, along with many other regional writers and performers. The World Poetry Series poets can be found on the main stage. There are two other stages with a variety of performances throughout the day: the Granville Stage and the Children’s Stage. A look at a boomtown from 150 years ago OUR PAST

ne hundred and fifty years ago, in early August 1860, New Westminster was starting to see the plan for the city take shape. The hillside was being cleared of trees and underbrush,

the street pattern was being roughed in, buildings were being built, and ships with goods were now coming directly to the city without going through Victoria first. The town was thriving and looking forward to the years to come. Just a few months earlier, the cornerstone for the Church of England had been laid. The Methodists were here, the Catholics were coming soon, and now this capital city had three churches to accommodate the growing

diverse population. With more and more people arriving from “Canada West” (Ontario), people were noticing a growing “Canadian” tone. The town now had a variety of businesses including a shoemaker, tinsmith, baker, butcher, carpenter, blacksmith, watchmaker, general provisioner, lawyer and real estate agent. There were also hotels, boarding houses and saloons, along with a variety of government offices. There were houses,

rough cabins and tents. The power of the gold rush on the lower Fraser was greatly diminished, but news of other finds was drawing the gold seekers north to the creeks and rivers of the Cariboo. The Royal City was still a busy place as prospectors, homesteaders and others arrived to buy supplies and await the paddlewheelers to upriver points. In July 1860, the New Westminster Municipal Council Act had put in place the mechanism for

the first locally elected government in Western Canada. It created four wards and outlined the requirements for voters and candidates for office. At that time, the populated part of New Westminster stretched from Royal Avenue to the river and, in 2010 terms, roughly from the foot of 12th Street to McBride Boulevard. Now, in early August, the city was finally going to witness its first civic election, and the townsfolk were watching with some

interest to see how the process would work out and who from among them would occupy the seven seats as city council. Abuse can shatter survivor’s sense of self-worth HEALTHWISE

n my last column, I wrote of how violence and abuse – physical, sexual or emotional – can shatter the survivor’s sense of self. Each is an act of aggression, control and dominance. Each is a violation of the person and trust. When we use others to gratify our own needs without their consent or regard for their needs, thoughts and feelings, we treat them as objects, as mere bodies and not persons. What is stolen from survivors of rape and abuse is their sense of control and trust – in their world and in their relationships. The harm and loss is so great that, in most cases, survivors can never fully trust or feel safe again. Their lives are changed forever – how they feel about themselves, how they relate to others and how they see the

world. The healing process is daunting, and it cannot be done alone. Fortunately, there are supportive people and resources available in our community. Survivors must be able to retell their stories repeatedly and, with each retelling, reshape the narrative and their emotional responses. This must be done in a safe and supportive, healing relationships. This act can defuse traumatic memories and begin the process of remaking the self. Professional counselling is helpful. Support groups can take away the sense of isolation the survivor may suffer; they can share coping strategies, and they can offer hope that one can feel better. Though never the same, their new selves can be stronger and better. Talking with emotionally strong and empathic others who are willing to listen can allow the expression of confused emotions – depression, anxiety and anger. Survivors of sexual assault can have difficulty expressing their anger at their aggressors. In the case of childhood sexual

Pornography encourages this dehumanizing objectification, as does popular media and advertising that teaches us to seek validation and self-worth on the basis of our physical appearance. Survivors of sexual abuse may fall prey to prostitution and, as described in a recent Vancouver Courier article, the abusive pornography industry. Healing for the survivor

abuse, the abuser may be dead. Sometimes fear can be the barrier to feeling anger. The act of the narrative allows the survivor to piece together a new healed self – to regain a sense of control over their own emotions, thoughts and bodies, control over their environment and their connections to others. They may regain their sense of self and selfworth. Because traumatic feelings and physical responses can be frozen with the past self that is now shattered, one may accept that it is OK or even desirable to be seen as an

of sexual assault and abuse involves the tasks of retelling your story in a safe and healing environment, the alleviation of selfblame, the healthy expression of anger, the regaining of trust in yourself, in others and in the world, regaining your connection to the rest of humanity, and the realization of your self-worth – that you are worthy of both love and happiness. We exist in relation to one another. We are each vulnerable and dependent on one another. To harm another is to harm ourselves. To heal ourselves is the beginning of healing our world.

We all share in the responsibility of objectifying women and ourselves. As parents, we must teach self-respect and self-worth but also the imperative to treat others as equals and not objects. hen the journals of Captain Cook’s third voyage were published in 1784, they sold out in three days. By 1800, an additional 14 editions had been printed, as well as translations into six different languages. Granted, the sensational story of Cook’s bloody demise during the voyage added to the public’s interest. Nonetheless, travel narratives were a significant part of 18th-century publishing and remain popular today. Not all writers travel for the same reasons, and thus their approach to their travel experience differs. On Captain Cook’s first voyage, for example, the botanist Joseph Banks went along to discover and classify new plants. In the recently published Adventures Among Ants, Mark Moffett’s fascination with ants leads him on a global search for just some of the 12,000 species of these industrious creatures. A biologist with the Smithsonian Institute, he captivates the reader with the gory details of marauder ants in India who swarm their prey, the horror of driver ants from Africa that can devour half an antelope, and ants in the Amazon who enslave their captives. The closeup photographs add to the squeamish delight of this book. A good travel guide will give us reliable recommendations for accommodations, places to eat and noteworthy sights and activities. But travelogues are much more intimate, with writers sharing their first encounters with a foreign land. The authors are often naïve but well-intentioned. We learn of their fears and

faux pas, their surprises and discoveries, and, like the central character in a novel, we watch them grow as a result of their experiences.

Bumblebees, mason bees help in gardens ANNE MARRISON

ue to mites and pesticides, honeybees are vanishing in many countries – and as suppliers of honey they are absolutely irreplaceable. But pollination in home gardens isn’t a lost cause because it can be done very effectively by other members of the bee family. The crucial thing gardeners can do is make gardens welcoming for these lesser-known but hardworking bees. Bumblebees, for instance, are resistant to the dreaded varroa mite that has decimated many honeybee hives. Other mites also attack bumblebees, but most weaken rather than kill outright. These bees are willing to work in temperatures below 10 C – unlike honeybees that don’t stir until temperatures are above 16 C. Bumblebees are good-tempered, and

spring, the eggs have gone through a larval stage and transformed into large blue-black hairy mason bees resembling bluebottles. For gardeners, the tube houses sold in early spring in garden centres can be placed on a house or shed wall for use by mason bees. Many commercial tube houses are wooden sandwich-type blocks that have been scooped out with a router so that they form tubes when the layers are together. Others are moulded plastic. Those first cocoons are clean and viable. Yearly maintenance involves taking the tube houses apart and discarding the dirtylooking cocoons because they will contain mites. The others can be placed outside in a birthing box (like a small birdhouse) to await warm weather. People in rural areas may find they can simply put mason bee tube houses on a house or shed wall and mason bees from the wild will lay eggs in the tubes. So will leaf-cutter bees. These are great pollinators working late into the summer when mason bees have vanished. You

can identify their tubes because they are sealed with green chewed up leaves. Mason bee tubes are sealed with grey mud. Wasps also pollinate, though not very successfully because they’re too smooth to carry pollen well. But tiny wasps and large yellowjackets visit flowers to eat the nectar, and so some pollination happens anyway. Yellowjackets are also useful predators of caterpillars. All pollinating insects are attracted to gardens where a shallow body of water has perching places

their stings are extremely rare, though very painful when they do occur. They work commercially in greenhouses pollinating tomatoes and sometimes peppers and cucumbers. Bumblebees are said to adapt well to greenhouses since they have senior moments and forget where they used to live. All they need for a nest is a hole in the ground. This could be an old mousehole or a hole under a board, or under a flat stone – somewhere rain can’t penetrate. Nothing bothers to rob a bumblebee hive: the total amount of honey in a nest is about two teaspoons. A colony starts small when the queen comes out of hibernation, but later the larger hives can reach 200 bumblebees. Invaluable for pollinating fruit, vegetable and ornamental crops in spring, mason bees have never been known to sting. They usually begin pollinating during the first warm spell in February but die off by mid-June, leaving eggs behind. In nature, each egg is sealed off in a plant stem or hole in a tree. By

The host Burnaby Burrards dropped their opening two games at the Presidents Cup senior B lacrosse championships at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre Monday. The Burrards lost 11-8 to CanAm champs Onondaga Redhawks to open the competition before dropping a 10-6 decision to the Kahnawake Mohawks in a later game. The defending two-time champion Owen Sound Woodsmen opened with a 14-9 victory over the Cornwall Island Redmen. The championships run all this week, with medal finals on Saturday. The bronzemedal game is set for 3 p.m. The championship final is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins proved his worth in the money game at the 2010 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka under-18 hockey championships in Slovakia. The 17-year-old Burnaby product scored the gold-medal-winning goal for Canada in a 1-0 victory over Team U.S.A. in the final of the Hlinka tournament in Piestany, Slovakia on Saturday. Nugent-Hopkins scored the game-winning goal in the opening two minutes of the first period on a solo rush up the ice for the defending champions from Canada. The Red Deer Rebels centre and last season’s Western Hockey League rookie of the year took a puck from inside his own zone and streaked up the right side, beating a U.S. defenceman and going in on a two-on-one with teammate Daniel Catenacci on the American keeper Steven Michalek.

Using Catenacci as a decoy, the speedy forward roofed the game’s only goal, beating Michalek with a wicked wrist shot to the top corner of the net. Canadian netminder Tyson Teichmann faced 22 shots on goal, posting Canada’s first gold-medal game shutout since Trevor Cann against the U.S. in 2006. The victory was the third year in a row and sixth time in seven years that Canada has won the Ivan Hlinka memorial title, which was formerly known as the Junior World Cup. Canada advanced to the final with a 6-2 win over co-host Czech Republic on Friday. The U.S. outlasted Sweden 5-4 in overtime in the other semifinal. “I think the guys understood that ‘hey, we’re in a real tough battle. They were unsure what to expect from the U.S. team, who played real gritty hockey throughout … a highpressure, high-intensity team, said Team Canada coach George Burnett

in a Canadian Press release. “(It’s) a great effort, a great feeling. When you put the time in that these guys have to prepare and go through this whole thing, and to come out on top, it’s a pretty special feeling.” Nugent-Hopkins, who is ranked as high as sixth overall in the world by TSN for the upcoming NHL junior draft, also drew one assist in the win over the Czechs in the semifinal. Nugent-Hopkins led all scorers with five goals in the tournament, including a hat trick in a 7-3 victory over the bronze medallists from Sweden on Day 2 of the week-long summer tournament. Canada’s roster was made up of 13 forwards, seven defencemen and two goaltenders, including 13 players from the Ontario league and just four from the WHL. Nugent-Hopkins was the lone player from B.C. to make the national team squad. He arrived home from Europe on Sunday.

It won’t get any easier for the New Westminster Salmonbellies when the Minto Cup kicks off Saturday. The B.C. Junior Lacrosse League runner-up earned a spot in the annual Canadian junior A lacrosse championship as the B.C. representative when host Coquitlam Adanacs defeated them in five games in the best-of-seven playoff final last week. The junior Salmonbellies will have their hands full when they meet the A’s again on Day 2 of the championship round robin, but first up is the Ontario champion Orangeville Northmen. New Westminster will meet the defending twotime Minto champions in the championship opening game this Saturday at the Coquitlam Sports Centre. Game time is 5 p.m. The Northmen swept their Ontario junior A league final series against the Six Nations Arrows in four straight games. “(They’re) legit,” said New Westminster head coach Dan Perreault. “They have won two previous Minto Cups. They have experience. … They have a lot of everything.” Orangeville did it convincingly as well, beating the Arrows 14-8 in Game 4 of the Ontario final in their opponent’s own barn. Playoff MVP Jeremy Noble led the Northmen with an eight-point effort, including six goals in the OLA final. Noble also led all playoff scorers in the East with 47 points, including 31 assists. Orangeville teammate Adam Jones led all goal scorers with 26 markers. Both Noble and Jones

are hunting for a third consecutive Minto Cup ring. Goalie Ward Dillon, who had just two starts in last season’s playoffs, played in all 12 games for Orangeville in the 2010 post season. Dillon lost just one game in the playoffs while boasting a post-season-best 6.12 goals against average and an .833 save percentage. New Westminster will then meet host Coquitlam on Sunday at 8 p.m.. The Salmonbellies finish off the round-robin against the Alberta champion Okotoks Raiders on Tuesday at 8 p.m. The Raiders could be the best team to represent the province in the Minto since Alberta made it a four-team format in 2003. Okotoks fashioned an overall record of 26-0-1 in league and playoffs this season. The Raiders swept its best-of-seven final over the junior Mountaineers with a 7-4 victory in Game 4. The Alberta champs are anything if not consistent. The Raiders boasted 10 of the league’s top 17 scorers in the playoffs. And of that 10, three did not factor in the league’s top-20 scoring leaders this season. Brett Baron led the Raiders in playoff scoring with 15 goals and nine assists. Delta transfer Carlton Schuss was next with 15 assists and 20 points. Danny Dahms and Travis Comeau are also coming off strong playoffs, with 17 and 16 points, respectively. “We have to play very sound defensively,” Perreault added. “We can’t give up weak goals and leave our goalies out to dry.” The Minto Cup best-ofthree final begins Saturday, Aug. 28 at 8 p.m.

handed Manitoba its first loss of the competition 12-4. The nationals continues through the week, with B.C. playing Nova Scotia today (Wednesday) at 3 p.m. B.C. takes on Ontario Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m. The final placement games run all day Friday, with the championship final taking place at 8 p.m.

New Westminster golfer in top eight at senior men’s provincials John Gallacher of Burnaby won a championship but just not the one he was hoping for at the B.C. senior men’s golf championships in Abbotsford last week. Gallacher, who golfs out of Pitt Meadows Golf Club, shared the zone championship with defending threetime senior men’s champion Gudmund Lindbjerg,

Gary Heselton and Brian Bates. Gallacher, the provincial senior men’s champion in 2007, finished seventh overall with an eight-over-par 219, including a one-under 69 in the second round at the 6,131yard Ledgeview Golf and Country Club Aug. 12. In the final round, Gallacher carded a four-

over 74, bogeying four of the final five holes to drop him out of contention. Lindbjerg finished with a two-over 212, two shots ahead of runner-up Brock Waldron of Kelowna. Both Lindbjerg and Waldron finished the 54hole competition with one-under 69 scores. Paul Kerbrat of New Westminster finished one

shot back of Gallacher in eighth place with a 220 score. Kerbrat struggled mostly on his par-threes, committing a pair of bogeys, two of his seven in the competition, in the final 18 holes. Paul Batchelor of New Westminster finished tied for 28th with a three-round 228 score.

Bowler wins three bronze at Americas Two local bowlers brought back medals from the 48th annual Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas tenpin bowling championships in Orlando, Florida. Burnaby’s Jordon Jung won three silver medals in the junior 16 to 19 age group, while Miles Nerona of New Westminster won three bronze medals in the senior men’s division in the America’s competition, held in the first week of August. Jung teamed with Melissa Corchesne to win a silver medal in the junior A mixed doubles with an overall 2,458 pinfall. Jung and Corschesne were just over 100 pins out of first place which was won by an American pair. Jung helped the Canadian junior A team to another second-place medal in the 12-game team event. The U.S. won that event by nearly 800 pins. The Burnaby bowler also earned a third silver medal in the team all-events competition.

Jung placed fourth with partner Graham Fach in the junior men’s doubles in a tight race for placing medals with runner-up Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Jung finished fourth overall in the singles portion, placing just nine pins out of a medal spot behind Kyle King of the U.S. Jung rolled a 12-game total of 2,396 in singles. He was also fifth in the individual all-events final. Nerona and Canadian teammate Amneris Fernandez placed third in the doubles competition with a combined 2,172 score. Nerona also helped Canada nip Puerto Rico for the bronze with a 24-pin win in the team event. He also took home a third bronze in the team all-event competition. Nerona placed fifth in the senior men’s singles competition, with a 2,351 total, just 25 pins out of a fourth bronze-medal position. He was sixth in the individual all-events.
