Inaugural Diversity Week celebrations got drenched – but spirits remained positive BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER

It was set to be the highlight of New Westminster’s inaugural Diversity Week, but Mother Nature rained all over Saturday afternoon’s Hills and Heels fundraiser. Organizer Vance McFadyen estimated that 75 people participated in the walk up Sixth Street to city hall, a much smaller-thananticipated number. “I think the rain cost us twothirds of our participants,” said McFadyen. “We were very happy to have as many people walk because the weather wasn’t that great. ... I had so many calls and e-mails from people apologizing profusely for pulling out.” The Hills and Heels fundraiser raised more than $1,900 for the new youth centre at Century House McFadyen said the Pride celebrations continued despite the rain, with more than 200 people at city hall to hear the Pride Proclamation from Acting Mayor Jonathan Cote. “We were very pleased with the attendance of our local politicians and the reading of the proclamation,” said McFadyen, who said he will frame a copy of that document in his home. Even when a Christian protestor threatened to disrupt the proceedings, McFadyen said participants took everything in stride. “He was making his point and all we said to him was Happy Pride Day,” said McFadyen. Coun. Bill Harper attended Saturday’s events, which also included the world’s largest flock dance in heels, along with a drag show at the Heritage Grill earlier in the week.

“I was pretty pleased with how the whole week went,” said Harper, who estimated the crowd at closer to 300 for the city hall proclamation. “I think we’re seeing New Westminster becoming a residence of choice for people from the gay community.” Harper said he expects Diversity Week to grow bigger and better next year. “This was a great first event,” he said. “I think the organizers did a great job and with this experience, they’ll put on an even better event next year.” As the party adjourned to Tipperary Park for an afternoon picnic party, more than 15 tents provided entertainment and respite from the rain for the people

A Queensborough institution is on the market for close to a cool $10 million. The Queens Motor Hotel, a 30-room hotel, pub and restaurant, has been listed by Homelife Benchmark Titus Realty for sale at $9.999 million. According to a listing by realtor Barry Bock, the property with frontages at 1110 Ewen Ave. and 240 Jardine St. has 111,296 square feet of space and the potential for 15 storeys of development. And while the property is zoned for multifamily high-rise and commercial mix usage, the value of the land lies in the future redevelopment of the property. Calls by The Record to Bock were not returned before press time. The property is currently owned by the Djurkovic family. Patriarch George, now deceased, bought the hotel on April 1, 1969 although the hotel has been in operation for more than 50 years. In the late 1950s, when the hotel was built and considered the city’s newest attraction, there were no highways and very few stores in the area for people to shop. hardy enough to persevere. “Korki the Clown was a hit, and the bands played non-stop,” said McFadyen. “The one thing we did do was we cleaned up at 4:30 p.m., an hour earlier than planned, because everything was getting pretty damp.” Even with the inclement weather, McFadyen

said the entire week’s festivities were a rousing success. “We engaged the community, and we consider the entire week a tremendous success,” said McFadyen. “We had our closing party at the Quay on Sunday night, and we all agreed it was a great week. … We’ll all take a break now, and we’ll start planning to make next year’s event even better.”

We saw that as the number 1 education priority in the city. “It’s going to be built last, so that raises some concerns,” said Bruyneel, who also noted that he wasn’t speaking on behalf of his school’s parent council, though other parents on the council

share his concerns. The parent council sent a letter to the district parent advisory council, a districtwide parent group, expressing concern over the fact that the high school would be built last. The district’s plan is to build the elementary school first, then the middle school and lastly the high school. According to the timeline, the high school – for students in grades 9 to 12 – would be completed in about 2016/17. Under that timeline, the next two generations of middle school students will miss the chance to attend the new high school, Bruyneel said. “If you reverse the order, you might have only one generation that would miss it,” he said. Bruyneel’s own daughter, who’s in Grade 7 at Glenbrook, wouldn’t make it to a new school, even if the project was pushed forward. Another reason for getting the

Walking all over art

Last weekend’s cultural crawl, a literal smorgasbord of art offerings throughout the city, included a guided tour along 12th Street. Tour-goers got to check out and learn about the street’s many colourful mosaics. West End resident Mary Wilson, who first approached the city with the idea of telling the stories behind the public art on 12th Street, attended the tour guided by Tim Ellison. The artwork on 12th Street includes granite street marketers, 16 poetry and quote pavers, and five mosaics. For the past seven years, the annual New Westminster Cultural Crawl has helped people add to their art collections with more than 50 artists displaying their wares in 23 studios spread across the city. The two-day event lets art enthusiasts visit artists, studios, galleries, live music venues, restaurants, theatres and historical locations throughout the city and discover emerging and internationally-acclaimed artists, including several Federation of Canadian Artists members.

Seems that it wouldn’t matter – the NDP would still be miles ahead. Rather tame stuff. However, we’re still waiting for the poll on which politician voters would most like to swear at in person. We’re thinking a couple of local politicos would be miles ahead in that poll as well.

Costs balloon for B.C. Place roof IN THE HOUSE

or a government that is in serious trouble when it comes to credibility and trust, it’s odd for the B.C. Liberals to continue to make nonsensical claims about their economic competence. I’m referring to last week’s boast that the new roof for B.C. Place stadium is “on time and on budget.” For sheer gall, I suppose that claim is in some way impressive. But it doesn’t ring true when compared to the history of that controversial project, where costs have ballooned and the schedule for getting a new roof kept changing for years. For a long time, the B.C. Liberals denied there was any need for a new roof. The government dismissed a 2006 engineering report that said the original roof needed replacement. Then, a year later, a giant hole was blown in the roof, and it began to leak regularly. It was agreed a new roof was needed, and in 2008 it was announced a new retractable roof would be installed. Less than a year later,

Tourism Minister Kevin Krueger said the whole project was delayed because it was proving more complex than originally thought. But not only has the timeline wobbled back and forth over the years, so has the budget, which has climbed an astronomical 58 per cent in a little more than a year. The first estimate from the government was $365 million. Then, a few months after the last election, the new number was $458 million. (Gee, what do you know, another big number revision announced only after everyone voted!) But Krueger then admitted that when you included all associated costs, the true budget was $563 million. But wait – he forgot about the $14-million cost for the temporary stadium at the old Empire Stadium site. So, everything in, and the final tally is $577 million, which is $208 million over the original estimate (an estimate based on an actual business plan, according to the B.C. Liberals). On top of all this, no firm date can be given for when the darn stadium will re-open for business. The B.C. Lions had been told they’d only have to spend one year in the temporary facility (although, by most accounts, it’s a lot nicer place to watch the Leos than the concrete bowl of B.C. Place stadium).

Look for guidance in God’s word

Re: Hope for change in church, Letters to the Editor, The Record, Aug, 7 I am one of the “church folk” casually referred to by Reverend Tim Dutcher-Walls in his letter to the editor, which was entitled “Hope for change in church.” I’m going to suggest a new title. How about “Change in church – for hope!” Unless we all, as individuals, deliberately decide to change our lives to become more like Christ within our churches, we will continue to struggle with the hopelessness in this world with our “human experiences.” The reverend’s statement that “many of our denominations are evolving” is not news. The apostles’ letters to every church in the New Testament, ◗Budget Page 7 from Romans to the book of Jude, read that the early

churches had to choose to place hope in God, who never changes, or hope in the world that is always changing its mind about who God is. Our human experience often conflicts with that of God’s, and when it does, we often seek the solutions to our problems from councils, committees, handbooks, conventions and synods, when in fact we should be searching God’s word for guidance – and not The New York Times. Suicide barriers ineffective

Dear Editor:

I have nothing but sympathy for the RCMP and other police agencies under siege by the public and the media for various misdemeanors attributed to some recalcitrant members who are giving the force a black eye. And then they have to

put up with threats of suicide from some admittedly confused souls, or in some cases, just plain demented people, which require the police to follow standard procedures involving such cases, which in turn, do not endear them to an ever-exasperating public who refuses to see things from the point of view of police procedural manuals. Talk of unpleasant choices. To me, these exposed threats of suicides are just for show – a prank – or, at worst, a real cry for help, although God knows why they choose to inconvenience people is beyond me. The serious threats will not make it to the six o’clock news except as an aside if the body is found soon enough. These are the people we should pay attention to for signs because they do not need nor want attention. They’ll just do it. People who scale bridges to supposedly commit suicide are not a serious risk to me, and if we just ignore them, they’ll probably just come down on their own volition if they notice that nobody gives a hoot about what they threaten to do – not the media nor the police. But we are a society that has been “toilet-trained” to empathize, and a threat of suicide is certainly something to agonize about. Be that as it may, there were suggestions that we should erect barriers to prevent these unfortunate incidents. But as TransLink spokesman Ken Hardie pointed out, these suicide barriers are ineffective by themselves. Physical barriers are not the answer but understanding man’s humanity could be. What we should strive to do is make our society more responsive to human needs, dreams and aspirations. We should try to master self-understanding and being at peace with ourselves. Then, and only then, will we solve these embarrassing human dilemmas. Norman Ostonal, New Westminster

Budget: Liberals worse than NDP ◗ continued from page 6

The only commitment has been that the stadium will be ready to host the 2011 Grey Cup game, which occurs in November. So, this is all “on time” and “on budget?” The B.C. Liberals have for years dined out on the supposed fiscal incompetence of the NDP government in the 1990s. They love to talk about the “dismal decade” and such things as the fast ferries fiasco as a way of perpetuating the idea that New Democrats cannot manage anything to do with economics. But when you start going through the list of

cost overruns that have piled up on the B.C. Liberals’ watch, it’s hard to take seriously their boasts of being so much better on economic matters than New Democrats. Aside from the B.C. Place roof overrun, there are such things as the new Vancouver Convention Centre, which cost almost $900 million – almost double the original estimate. The Port Mann Bridge project has ballooned from $600 million to $3.3 billion. For years, the government has insisted the costs for the 2010 Olympics would be $600 million, and not a penny more. Last month, it finally admitted

the tally was about $925 million – an overrun of more than 50 per cent. And let’s not forget last year’s pre-election budget, which turned out to be the most inaccurate budget in B.C. history. Last year’s wildly inaccurate budget dwarfs the NDP’s record when it comes to missing the mark. Various polls continue to show voters give the B.C. Liberals more credibility than the NDP when it comes to the economy. Based on the track record of this government recently, it’s difficult to see why that continues to be the case. A mother’s love: Gale Stewart started Aunt Leah’s Independent Life Skills Society in 1988 as a way to help children in foster care. The organization recently received a big boost from the federal government – a grant to help buy the home it was renting for young aboriginal mothers in Burnaby.

Keeping young moms off the streets Record reporter Jennifer Moreau caught up with Gale Stewart, a Vancouver resident who started Aunt Leah’s Independent Life Skills Society in 1988. The New Westminster organization runs a house in Burnaby that gives aboriginal teen moms a place to stay so they don’t end up homeless. Aunt Leah’s recently received $666,500 from the federal government to buy the home the organization was renting in Burnaby. J: What does Aunt Leah’s do exactly? G: Aunt Leah’s Society helps prevent children in foster care from becoming homeless and mothers in need from losing custody of their children. To support them on their journey of self-sufficiency, we provide supported housing, job training and coaching on the essential skills.

J: Tell me a bit about yourself. Where are you from? What were you doing before this? G: Originally I am from Ontario but have lived on the coast for the last 30plus years. I graduated from Ryerson University in Toronto in radio television arts. When we moved to Vancouver, we started a family and at the same time Paul (my husband) and I were foster parents for about 10 years. J: Why did you start the group? G: As a foster parent of teenagers, it was very evident that a youth who had lived in four, five, 10 foster homes was not interested in being part of another family – of wanting to recognize another set of foster parents as “mom and dad.” All of their energy and development was heading toward the desire to live independently, move

a licensed residence with a 24-hour staffing model. Ideally, we like the moms to come into the program when they are in their sixth to seventh month and to stay with us, minimally, till their infant is three months old. J: Who stays there? What are teens like? Where do they come from? G: The priority is given to aboriginal teens, but if a bed is empty, then a teen mom from the mainstream can be placed at Aunt Leah’s House. The moms are all foster children and their home community can be anywhere in B.C. J: Canada has a long history of apprehending aboriginal children. How do you help these young moms keep their kids? Why is that important? G: We do have a long

history of apprehending aboriginal children. And one can make a very strong case that these apprehensions have been a negative continuation of the residential school experience – a continuation of separating young children from their culture and their family and community. Aunt Leah’s is not an aboriginal organization, but we do strive to hire aboriginal staff, to seek wisdom and direction from aboriginal elders and to provide culturally based programs and recreation for the residents. In order for a teen mom – who is developmentally able – to retain custody of her baby, she needs lots of support, and that support needs to continue past her time in care. We have developed a second stage program called Thresholds, which has a suite where a mom can learn to live on her

own. Unfortunately, at the time of this interview we only have one suite. Two years ago we were able to accommodate five moms in the Thresholds program. The downturn in the economy hit, and we had to cut this particular program. We are in the process of rebuilding and hope to have it back to full capacity in the next two years.

J: Have you seen any changes over the years? Are things improving? G: The biggest change is that we now have research that affirms what we have always known. Foster children, like the ones that lived in my home and in yours, need support as young adults. And when this support is not given, then very quickly they become an addition to the homeless population. When interviewed, over 60 per cent

The wild card with any major summertime outdoor event is always the weather, but it looks like Mother Nature will be cooperating with blue skies for the upcoming Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival at Deer Lake Park. The forecast is calling for highs of around 25°C for this Saturday’s party in the park – just about the perfect temperature for dancing in the sun, soaking in the whole lakeside scene and making the most of the beer garden. When it started 11 years ago, the event simply was the Burnaby Blues Festival. Held rain or shine, the fest has grown to be a popular single-day event that is push-

ing the newly upgraded outdoor venue’s 8,000 capacity to the max and has since included roots in its name to better reflect the wider genres of musicians the Burnaby bash now attracts. This year’s lineup is a case in point. While true blues legends such as Taj Mahal and Kenny Wayne Shepherd are the evening headliners. The worst appears to be behind the New Westminster Salmonbellies. If lessons have been learned, the Salmonbellies should wrap up their best-of-seven Western Lacrosse Association semifinal against the Maple Ridge Burrards tonight (Wednesday). The senior A ’Bellies took a 3-1 series lead Monday following a 12-6 win at Planet Ice. However, the outcomes againt Maple Ridge have been decidedly closer at Queen’s Park Arena. The Burrards surprised the home team 12-11 in the opening game. New Westminster then got by the upstarts 12-9 on Saturday on the strength of a 6-0 second period run. “(Maple Ridge) deserves all the goals they get. When we do go on runs, it’s not necessarily they’re not playing well. It’s a lot of things, it’s breaks and luck,” said Cliff Smith, who has nine goals and 17 points so far in the playoffs. On Monday, Salmonbellie second star Tyler Richards stopped all but one of 16 shots in the opening period to help the visitors to a 3-1 advantage. New Westminster kept the pressure on in the following periods, scoring on four-of-five power play opportunities to put the

The Coquitlam Adanacs are one win away from a second straight B.C. Junior Lacrosse League championship. The three-time defending regular season champs broke the home-team advantage in Game 4 of the best-of-seven junior A final series, defeating the New Westminster Salmonbellies 9-5 at Queen’s Park Arena Friday. The Adanacs now hold a 3-1 advantage in the series over New Westminster. Game 5 is at the Coquitlam Sports Centre tonight (Wednesday), beginning at 8 p.m. The game followed the pattern of the first three games of the series, with the score tied heading into the third period. In a similar scenario to the earlier games in the playoff final, one team took over in the final frame. This time, it was Coquitlam

who made the best of its chances in the third. Robert Church and Ontario import Mark Matthews, on a fine individual effort, sparked a fivegoal third period for the winners. Church opened the final 20 minutes with back-to-back markers less than a minute apart. Matthews, who assisted on both of Church’s goals and finished with a game-high six points, then tallied his fifth goal of the playoffs half a minute later. Matthews’ counter may well have broken the spirit of the Salmonbellie defence when he took a loose ball from his own zone the full length of the floor to score unassisted on starter Frank Scigliano to give Coquitlam a three-goal lead after just two minutes of the final period. “It’s a couple of mistakes that are hurting us each game,” said Salmonbellies captain Jarrett Toll. “It’s the simple mistakes we’re

making. Anyone could have scored. … It’s something we have to corrrect, if we want to have any chance of winning this series, or winning the Minto. Our defence has to be better.” New Westminster had a promising start in the opening period, holding a 3-1 lead on unanswered single goals by Tyler Digby, Cody Bremner and Daniel McQuade. But Adanac goalkeeper Dan Lewis looked sharper in the second period and Coquitlam took advantage on the power play, taking the lead on two extra-man markers from Ben McIntosh. McQuade scored his second goal of the game to keep the score even at 4-4. But in the third period, only one team rose to the occasion. Jeff Cornwall, playing in just his first game in the final series, silenced any chance of a New Westminster comeback, scoring shorthanded on a breakaway pass

from Lewis early in the period. Cornwall then scored his second goal of the game into a vacated net. “Our team works really hard on fitness. Everyone is in the best shape of our lives here, and we say we’re just going to get better,” said Cornwall. “It feels nice to get another chance at home and possibly finish the series.” The key to stopping the Salmonbellies in five games is to keep taking away what the New Westminster shooters want,” added Cornwall. “We got to keeping hitting them hard. Not too many teams can keep up with us if we keep hammering them,” he said. Toll believes the outcome will be different if the Salmonbellies just keep their focus for a full 60 minutes. “We have to play better,” Toll said. “We have to come and focus like we did in the first period.”

Basketball B.C. teams all medalled at the national under-15 and u-17 championships last weekend. The girls’ u-17 team came away with the gold medal, upsetting host Ontario 80-75 in overtime in Toronto Aug. 7. Alisha Roberts, a 5-7 guard from York House School, played more than 40 minutes in the final, finishing with six points, seven rebounds, three assists, four steals and one blocked shot. The championship win avenged an earlier 56-54 loss to Ontario in the weeklong tournament. St. Thomas More forward Lexi Der lifted B.C. into the championship final, scoring 18 points, while leading the team in rebounding with 12 boards in a 74-68 win over Quebec in the semifinal on Friday. B.C.’s u-15 girls came away with a bronze medal, following a 62-43 victory over Alberta. In Winnipeg, the u15 and u-17 boys both brought back third-place medals from their respective age-group nationals in Winnipeg. The u-17 boys, including Burnaby South Secondary’s Ater Degal and Nick Irvine, held on for an 80-79 victory over Saskatchewan in the consolation final Saturday. Degal, a 6-1 guard for the Rebels, scored five points and grabbed three rebounds, while earning three assists and two steals in the final game. B.C. lost eventual champion Quebec 89-86 in the semifinal. Degal scored 14 points in the loss. B.C. defeated Nova Scotia 98-49 in the championship round. Irvine, a 6-7 senior post at South, scored nine points and led B.C. in rebounds with 10 in the game. Quebec defeated Ontario 86-75 in the final. In u-15 play, Giovanni Trasolini, a 6-4 guard from Burnaby, also won a bronze medal with Team B.C., following an 86-69 win over host Manitoba. B.C. lost to Quebec 9464 in the semifinals. Ontario topped Quebec 82-77 in the u-15 goldmedal game.

Team B.C. got scooped in the boys’ and girls’ finals at the Ontario Lacrosse Festival in Whitby last weekend. Both the boys’ and girls’ bantam teams rode unbeaten records into their respective gold-medal finals only to come up empty against the host Ontario teams. B.C.’s peewee boys, third-place finishers after the round robin, also earned a silver medal, upsetting Team Iroquois 7-5 in the semifinal before falling 111 to Ontario in the championship final Aug. 7. The bantam boys, including New Westminster’s Connor Robinson, Mitchell Stokes and Jordan McKenzie, went a perfect 8-0 in the round robin, including a 10-4 win over eventual champion Ontario. Shawn Fitzsimmons and Chandler Bradley of Burnaby were non-travelling alternates. B.C. lost 6-1 in the goldmedal final to the host province.

Robinson collected 15 points for B.C., including seven goals. Stokes garnered three goals and eight assists, while McKenzie tallied a goal in a two-point offering. Iroquois took the bronze medal 6-5 over Alberta. Ontario snuck by Alberta 5-4 in the A semifinal. In preliminary round play, B.C. shut out Quebec, Nova Scotia and Manitoba, while allowing one goal against New Brunswick and just two to Saskatchewan. Marcus Davis of Peninsula led the bantam boys’ team, finishing third in overall scoring with 16 goals and 29 points. Jeremy Bosher of Kamloops led B.C. with 17 goals. The bantam girls, including team high scorer Nicole Shanks of New Westminster, outscored their combined opposition 22-2 in round-robin play. Shanks finished second in overall scoring with five goals and a tournamentbest six assists. Ontario blanked the B.C. girls 4-0 in the gold-medal final. B.C. squeaked by the host team 1-0 earlier in the

tourney. Also representing B.C. were Courtney Kearnes, Ellelan Degife, Jenna Chernoff and Nina Biagini of New Westminster and Burnaby’s Jolene Robinson and Amber Gilmore. LACHMANN, Manfred It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Manfred Horst Lachmann on Monday, August 2, 2010 at Royal Columbian Hospital at the age of 71 after a short battle with cancer. Manfred was born on June 16, 1939 in Puschkau, Germany and came to Canada in 1965. Manfred started working for the City of New Westminster in June, 1966 and retired in July, 2000 after 34 years as a gardener with the City’s Parks Department.
