When faith fails: A matter of Pride After coming out in the media, a city teen gets a call from her church and is forced to make a decision BY NIKI HOPE REPORTER

Last month, when 17-year-old Tory Inglis was featured in a newspaper article about her involvement in the city’s first-ever Pride celebration, she never expected to face fallout from her church. Tory, a lesbian, has been going to the First Presbyterian Church on Seventh Street in New Westminster her entire life but withdrew her membership last month, after the church’s minister and another senior church member took her to task for being involved with New Westminster’s Pride Day. “They want me to leave the Pride organization, even though it stands for all of the things they preach in their church, which is acceptance of all people,” Tory said. Tory knew the church opposed gay marriage but was unaware that her involvement with Pride would be so contentious. “I knew their stance on it was you can’t get married,” she said. “I didn’t realize it’s … almost like ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy in the States.” A photograph of Tory and two gay men was featured on a front-page story in the June 12th edition of The Record. Roughly a month after the story appeared, Tory said the minister called her house to talk about her involvement with Pride. They discussed the gay “lifestyle” during what was an uncomfortable and emotional phone call for Tory. Tory later met with the minister and another female church member. The festivities kicked off with a pancake breakfast, and, as organizers geared up for the 11 a.m. start of the festival, the clouds went away and the sun shone brightly. “Everything went according to plan,” said Ashdown. “What made it even better this year was we seemed to have a lot more kids this year. The bouncy castle was very busy, and the kids zone seemed to be full all day. “I think a lot of families did a staycation and decided to do something closer to home,” he said. The night ended with the after-party at the Terminal Pub, with volunteers thinking about ways to make next year’s event even better. “We had some people ask us to put in a beer garden but we have to look at what that means,” said Ashdown. “This is a family-oriented event first. … All in all, we haven’t had many complaints, and everybody had a great time.”

It was Tory’s public display in the newspaper that seems to have gotten the backs up of senior church officials, the family believes. “(The minister) said because it became public knowledge, we have to act on it,” Karen said. The Record contacted the First Presbyterian Church’s minister to request an interview for this story. Rev. Timothy Bruneau wanted to have a face-to-face interview with The Record and the fellow church member who had met with Tory. Due to time constraints, The Record was unable to meet with the church before Bruneau’s summer holidays.

This Thursday marks the first of four Royal City Farmers Market events this month and there will be special activities and entertainment at all four markets in August. “It means a lot to the market that the city is behind us and continues to be behind us,” said Jen Arbo, the market’s operations manager, in a press release. “At the Farmers Market, shoppers’ dollars are re-invested in the community, strengthening the local economy. It’s also a unique opportunity to meet the people who make, bake and grow the food you buy.” In addition to supporting local food producers, the market aims to strengthen community ties. Sheila Rowswell, the market’s treasurer, said: “Each market day builds community as people connect, visit, listen to music and learn about vendors and other community

But, currently, human rights legislation in B.C. and Canada does not forbid religious organizations to deny membership or ordainment to gays and lesbians if that church’s doctrine holds that homosexuality is forbidden. Is that right or wrong? We, of course, have our own opinion. Our opinion is that human rights is an evolving

process, one that includes education, engagement and enforcement. We hope that in New Westminster, we’ll reach a point in the not too distant future where Tory Inglis’s treatment by her church will be seen as an error in judgment – one based on too little experience and information and too much dogma. But we also understand that change does not come as quickly as many of us would like, and people of good conscience and Christian compassion can hold beliefs that we find discriminatory.

Gateway pipeline a PR disaster IN THE HOUSE

his year’s bad timing award has to go to Enbridge Inc., the latest oil company to become enmeshed in a public relations nightmare caused by a leak in one of its pipelines. I wrote in this space a couple of months back that Enbridge’s bid for approval of its northern Gateway pipeline from Alberta to Kitimat would be a hard sell, from both political and environmental perspectives. That hard sell has now become near impossible, as public outrage over the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and now Enbridge’s own spill in Michigan may be sounding the death knell of Enbridge’s plans. While its Gateway pipeline will still go through a federal environmental process, it’s almost impossible to believe the Harper government will give the final go-ahead. While there is some local support for the project, based on its job creation potential, the opposition is more organized and vocal. First Nations firmly oppose the pipeline, and the Michigan

spill will heighten concerns about the same thing happening in this province. Enbridge has been criticized for its inadequate response to the spill of 3.1 million litres of oil into the Kalamazoo River, creating a 50kilometre slick that threatens to drift into Lake Michigan. As well, it has been accused of ignoring concerns that its pipeline had seriously deteriorated. Not exactly the kind of publicity Enbridge needs as its pushes to build another such pipeline here. The spill in Michigan took place in a populated area that is relatively easy to get to for cleanup. But the proposed northern pipeline runs through remote, pristine wilderness where access is anything but easy, thus presenting a nightmarish scenario of a similar leak occurring in a place where a clean-up response may almost be impossible. But before all the antiGateway folks get too excited, remember this: Alberta’s dirty tar sands oil will still be shipped to Asia (notably China) and that means potentially even more oil being loaded and shipped out of Vancouver. That could translate into even more tanker traffic through Burrard Inlet and the Juan de Fuca Strait. Tankers have been plying those waters for decades, and traffic is already up significantly the past few years.

Cote misunderstood letters Dear Editor:

Re: Pier park reclaims waterfront, Letter to the Editor, The Record, July 28. Mr. Jonathan Cote, with respect, you clearly misunderstand the letters that have been published. I don’t recall letters or citizens that don’t want a new park. I have read about concerns regarding the cost to build the park, the return on investment and the timing of the purchase. Others about the remediation plan, the impact on the Fraser River and safety for people who will visit the park. Was the public ever asked if it wanted the city to spend more than $1,031 for every man, woman and child in New Westminster (estimated cost to ◗ Oil Page 8 complete the park)?

No doubt it was great to get $17 million in grants, but no mention is made of the $17 million the city will spend ($8.5 million to build and $8.5 million to purchase). Perhaps as others have written (if the city had consulted), they may have opted to fix Canada Games Pool instead. What are the economic benefits that Cote espouses? Was the business community consulted about spending $54 million dollars? What are the borrowing costs on our share? Where are the connections to the park? Are these costs included? Will it be hard to get to, like Sapperton Park? Jonathan speaks about how much park will be completed and what is included, but this is still not confirmed (see the article, Wharves first to go, The Record, July 28). On consultation, there have only been two meetings. Is this enough for a project this size?

Long-form census makes good financial sense Dear Editor:

Since the end of June, I have watched with an increasingly sinking feeling our federal government’s plan for the 2011 census; namely, to do away with the mandatory long form and replace it with a voluntary survey. This decision will cost taxpayers $30 million more and seriously damage the information the census provides; the quality will be worse, as it will ignore important and vulnerable parts of society (the poor, new immigrants, etc.) and will make it impossible to compare future censuses with nearly a half-century of painstakingly gathered information that has been called a “national treasure” for the role it plays in making our country great. The logic of paying more for a worse product is obvious and should offend all members of society who find government waste distasteful. However, this decision is doubly wasteful. The information, which is gathered by the census, is used every day to make good decisions by governments, community organizations and businesses. Commonplace questions like “what kind of languages should the New West library stock?” or “how many buses do we need to purchase in the next 10 years?” are answered largely by the census. Businesses (especially small) use the census to target their flyers, or to decide which neighbourhoods they should open stores in. Doctors use it to plan life-saving pandemic response plans, or to focus hospital care. Nearly everything you care about is touched by the long-form census – and without the census, the many decisions we (as a society) need to make will be less informed and, therefore, worse. Worse decisions mean worse outcomes for our community, and a shameful waste of money. There is no replacement for the census. No other survey can provide the same information and create the same value. The government’s stated rationale is that some find the census “intrusive” (though the privacy commissioner has recorded only a handful of complaints)

and disagree with it being mandatory. With respect, I disagree – we live in an amazing and wonderful country. Part of being a citizen means helping our country stay that way. Anonymously answering a handful of questions every 25 years, in the interests of good government and sensible decision-making, should be a responsibility of citizenship we all welcome. I certainly do, and I hope you feel the same way – and will call upon our government to change its decision on this matter. Jonathan Graves, New Westminster

New high school plan works for everyone Dear Editor:

I am thrilled at the prospect of three new schools, including a high school for the children of New Westminster. As chair of the Lord Tweedsmuir parent advisory council, I look forward to the beginning of the new school year this September. When we will consult with the parents of Tweedsmuir, this plan will be the top of our agenda. We look forward to a robust consultation process. In my opinion, this is a very wellthought out plan by both the city and the school board. The plan does its best to address the concerns of the sports community, the Massey Theatre group, parents and school-aged children of New Westminster. The school district and the city have done more than I expected to help out our theatre community by offering them $10,000 a month for a 30-month period, during the time that the theatre is not available. When the new theatre is finished, they will have a new state-of-the-art facility that is only 200 hundred odd seats smaller than the current theatre. The Massey Theatre group have been involved in the process, as we all have, over the last 10 to 12 years. This may not be the result they were expecting, but it is the best result for all of New Westminster. We get a new high school, middle school and grade school. I am told that almost half the school population of New Westminster will be sitting in a new school once this project is finished. In addition, New Westminster will have a new Massey Theatre, and a repaired sports track with the stadium seats attached. I think all levels of government, provincial, municipal and the school board, should be congratulated and supported. Let’s get on with the process of consultation and input from the community and then let’s build these schools. Don Ellam, New Westminster

For now, the tankers have carried oil from the Kinder Morgan pipeline that extends from Alberta to Burnaby. One of the trickiest parts of the ocean voyage occurs early on: navigating through the Second Narrows in Burrard Inlet, which is just 121 metres wide and not very deep. The BP oil spill understandably has everyone concerned about oil drilling and has revived awful memories of the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska. Many people have called for a ban on tanker traffic. But those who want to kill all the pipelines and beach all the oil tankers are ignoring an essential part of the picture – we depend on oil for our state of living. That’s not to say we shouldn’t try to wean ourselves off of oil dependence, but that will take

many, many years and require a huge shift in our social behavior. There is a hypocritical streak embedded in many of the moral arguments against oil usage. (For example, how many people who attend anti-oil protests take dieselburning transit or gasfuelled cars to get there?) The Alberta oil sands are an enormous financial investment for the companies involved up there. They are not going to walk away because a pipeline doesn’t get built to Kitimat. Rather, the dirty oil will find a way out of the province – and that still means cutting through B.C. – either through the existing pipeline or, more likely, via tanker rail cars — and likely into the Burnaby refinery. And that will mean more tankers cruising past Vancouver, the supposedly green capital of Canada.

Kitimat’s loss is not necessarily Vancouver’s gain. Oil spills do happen. Let’s just hope and pray one doesn’t occur if a tanker runs aground or collides with something in Burrard Inlet or out in the waters surrounding the Gulf Islands. A grateful SkyTrain passenger was reunited with a lost $200,000 US certified cheque on Thursday afternoon. The businessman lost the cheque shortly after 1 p.m. on July 29 and used the emergency platform phone at the Sapperton SkyTrain station in New Westminster to ask for assistance from SkyTrain attendants. Local artisan with a touch of glass

You never know what you can learn at night school. Two years ago, Susan OttoBain decided to attend New Westminster’s continuing education glasswork course. She had always had an interest in art and had various projects on the go, and she was ready for a new challenge. “I always wanted to try it,” she says. She had to face her fear of fire to learn the craft, she says, adding she doesn’t even like using gas stoves of barbecues. “The biggest challenge was overcoming my fear of the flame,” she says. “Turning on the torch and facing it.” But Otto-Bain says she has never burned herself while working with the glass. Otto-Bain crafts glass lampwork beads, using a technique where she melts glass rods around a rounded metal stick. Another challenge is making sure the glass doesn’t drop, which requires turning the metal rod constantly while working with it, she adds. She works in her studio from about five to 20 hours a week, depending on her schedule. She sells beads, fish and turtle designs, fused glass pendants and earrings.

“I make all kinds of wild, colourful beads,” Otto-Bain says. “”They’re very funky and colourful.” Otto-Bain will be bringing her work to the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival in August. It is her second time at the

festival – she was one of the first eight artisans to take part in last year’s market. “They picked artists that really went with the festival,” she says of the inaugural market. “It was fabulous,” she says. “It is such a great environment.”

Otto-Bain has also sold her work at the Herbert Spencer Elementary School and St. Thomas More Collegiate craft fairs. Other local artisans featured at the festival include Shannon Powell of Air-a-Tatt, who will be

selling airbrush tattoos, and the New West company, Sunseeker Toe Thongs. Burnaby’s Tom Wray, who builds custom-made guitars, and Rita Khimani, who will be selling exotic henna tattoos on site, are also among those selling their goods at the festival. Wray was at last year’s festival as well. There should be about 11 artisans this year, according to JulieAnne Slade, the special events officer for the city who is in charge of organizing the market. Displays range from airbrushed and henna tattoos to neon artwork, from guitars to toe jewelry. This year’s Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival includes performances by Taj Mahal, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Serena Ryder, Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real, Colin Linden, Little Miss Higgins and Yukon Blonde, and will be held on Saturday, August 14 at 12:30 p.m. The winner of Shore FM’s Sounds of Summer Contest, Zaac Pick, will also play. The 11th annual Blues and Roots Festival will be held at the newly renovated Deer Lake Park.

Question Could you provide any advice as to the quantity and frequency of watering newlyplanted cedars and a maple tree in our backyard? Josephine, Burnaby Answer In this weather, water them lots. Cedars are moisture lovers. Summer isn’t a good time to plant cedars, and a heat wave can cause them immense problems. If your cedars are a newly-planted hedge, watering them by handheld hose could take an enormous amount of time and water. It would be better to acquire soaker hoses. They could run along each side of the hedge, or around individual cedars if yours are island plantings in your garden. With soaker hoses, you can run water at a very low level for a long time. Gradually, the moisture will soak down to the roots. Be sure to check that pressure in the soaker hoses is strong enough to

Urban areas now include raccoons, skunks, rats, squirrels and coyotes. Squirrels, rabbits and chipmunks all nibble on plants if they need moisture. Deer sometimes invade suburban gardens and mature ones can reach at least two metres (six feet) high. They love munching on roses. About your nasturtiums: If the damage is only edge notches, the culprits could be vine weevils or leaf-cutting wasps. Slugs or snails eat holes in the middle of the leaf as well. It was the New Westminster Salmonbellies time to turn the tables on the Coquitlam Adanacs in Game 2 of the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League playoff finals. In a similar fashion to the A’s overtime win in Game 1, New Westminster broke open a tightly played playoff final game with five goals in the final period to defeat Coquitlam 9-5 at Queen’s Park Arena last Friday. The win evened the best-ofseven championship final at one game apiece. Game 3 is scheduled for tonight (Wednesday) at the Coquitlam Sports Centre. Game time is 8 p.m. The junior A Salmonbellies clawed their way back into the match after falling behind 2-0 after the opening period. Mark Negrin and Jay Card got New Westminster right back into it, scoring less than a minute apart to start the middle frame. Keegan Bal and Colton Clark, with his seventh goal of the playoffs, knotted the game at 4-4 to head into the final frame. But like Game 1, the home team struck quickly and completely. Brandon Goodwin, Cody Bremner and Bal all tallied in a three-minute span early in the period to give New Westminster the momentum it needed. Frank Scigliano made 31 stops in the Salmonbellie net to record the win. Bal and Goodwin both scored their second goal of the game and eighth of the playoffs to give the junior ’Bellies a five-goal lead late into the stanza. Coquitlam’s Robert Church tallied his hat trick in the final minute of play with the goalie out for a sixth attacker. “We didn’t want to go down two games,” said Salmonbellies captain Jarrett Toll after the game. “We know they are a great team, but just knowing we can beat them is a big boost for the boys.”

36 overall, holding the Adanacs to just 20 shots in the latter two periods. That’s the kind of effort it’s going to take for the rest of the series, Card added “It’s going to take hard work to beat them. We’re just going to have to bring our A game every game,” he said. The host association defeated West Vancouver 9-5 in the final round-robin game of the provincials Friday. Starting pitcher Markus Zacharuk got the win for the home team, striking out five and allowing four runs in five and one-third innings. Zacharuk also had a pair of hits, includ-

ing a run-scoring single in the fifth inning. Jonathan Tomalty got the save, giving up two hits and striking out two. New Westminster won the game on the strength of a seven-run second inning, capped by Brandon Lee’s first-ever Little League home run. Lee slammed the tworun dinger over the centre field fence for his second hit of the game. Jake Bell started the rally with a line drive to right field that scored Joelson Del Rosario. The win left the hosts with an overall 2-4 record, just one win short of a semifinal berth. “I was hoping it would mean something, but it’s a good win to get this far,” said New Westminster team manager Ed Zacharuk. “I think they learned they can play with

these guys.” New Westminster held a two-run lead against eventual finalist Hastings earlier in the tournament before the East Vancouver association found its stride in an 11-3 win. The Royal City side then rebounded with a 95 victory over Vancouver Island champion Layritz July 27. Layritz wrapped up a spot in the semifinals with a 10-8 win over Whalley on Friday. “We showed some heart and showed dedication, and we came to play even

though Whalley didn’t help us out,” Zacharuk added. Round-robin winner Little Mountain went on to win the provincial title, blanking Hastings 8-0 in the championship final on Sunday. Zacharuk, who is vicepresident of the association, praised the city and sponsors for a successfully run tournament. “New Westminster is definitely on the baseball map,” Zacharuk said. New Westminster ’s intermediate A and B teams both won medals at the provicial lacrosse championships in Richmond this past weekend. The B team had to settle for a silver medal after two tough matches against eventual champion Juan de Fuca. The Vancouver Island club, 7-2 winners in roundrobin play, beat New Westminster 6-4 in the B gold medal final Monday. “The boys deserve a ton of credit,” said New Westminster intermediate B head coach Chuck MacDonald. Russell Birosh was named top goalie and selected to the provincial all-star team along with teammate Carson Metcalfe. Justice Pash, Ian Ham, Jordan Smith and Hudson Ducommun scored one game apiece, while defenders Brandon Sidhu and James McKenzie also played well against the physical Juan de Fuca side. New Westminster, the North conference league champs, defeated the South conference winners, Delta, 6-5 in its opening match. “The boys showed fantastic composure. The kind of composure you’d expect from a team that was competing at a higher level,” MacDonald said. “As far as I’m concerned, they were the better team on the floor as far as skill and dignity.” The intermediate A team won a bronze medal, defeating regular-season runnerup Coquitlam Adanacs 8-7 in the provincial consolation final. The win was the second of the tournament against Coquitlam, giving New Westminster a 3-2 series advantage in head-to-head meetings this season. “I’m more than happy. It clearly proved the first time was not a fluke,” said intermediate A head coach Don MacDonald. “In the friendly, adversorial competition between the two associations, it was sweet to go in and beat the second-place team convincingly.” Despite being the most penalized team in the ◗Intermediate Page 21

The New Westminster Salmonbellies locked up a second Western Lacrosse Association regular season title in three seasons with an emphatic 13-5 win over the Burnaby Lakers July 29. Salmonbellie rookie righthander Corbyn Tao sparked a five-goal scoring spree midway through the second period that opened up an otherwise close game. Alex Gajic, with back-to-back markers 23 seconds apart, Ilija Gajic and Sean Robinson also scored to give the home team a 94 edge going into the final frame.

It was rough and tumble, and we beat the tar right out of (Port Moody),” said Taylor. Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I’m a B.C. boy – born and raised in Richmond. I began playing football while attending high school at Vancouver College and continued to develop my skills during my university career at Simon Fraser. I have been a fan of the Black and Orange all my life and distinctly remember attending Lions games at BC Place in the 1980s. My brother Mark was briefly a Lion in 1990 – so football genes definitely run in my family! After 10 seasons with the Lions, I still can’t believe that I get to come to work every day and play the game I love, and I’m more determined than ever to bring the Grey Cup home to B.C. at least one more time during my career. As one of the longest-serving veterans on the team and the guy anchoring the offensive line in the centre position, I take a leadership role in the locker room and am sometimes looked to for advice by the younger players. Our team — and the O-line in particular — is like a family to me and I’m proud of my contributions in the locker room and on the field. As the second-youngest of six kids in my family, I looked up to my older siblings when I was growing up for inspiration and guidance. For that reason, I love taking part in the Lions’ community programs throughout the year, particularly the club’s Lions in the House initiative. It makes me feel proud to know that I could have a positive influence on a young person who is at a very important time in their life.
