The aging Westminster Pier deck is being demolished to pave the way for a future waterfront park. Dugal Purdie, project manager of the Westminster Pier Park project, said the project is proceeding according to schedule. “The marine contractor is working away,” he said. “He is working on deck demolition. He started pulling up the old timber, which he is planning to recycle.” The timbers started coming out after the asphalt surface was removed from the site. At the same time that demolition of the aging deck is being done at the waterfront site, city staff and consultants are working on the design. “The design is not yet complete, the detailed design,” Purdie said. “We are at something called the 75 per cent review stage.” Some residents have wondered why pile driving has yet to begin at the site, questioning if it’s related to ◗Park Page 9

Members of the Raymond Burr Performing Arts Society, who saw the curtain go down for the last time at their former home at the Burr Theatre in 2006, are applauding the announcement of a proposed 1,000-seat theatre to be built inside a new secondary school. “Except for sterling efforts by the Royal City Musical Theatre to fill the existing cavernous and aging Massey Theatre and the launch of other companies’ productions in smaller and technically inadequate facilities, New Westminster had been devoid of a mid-sized and affordable space to launch community theatre productions,” said E.C. “Ted” Eddy, a retired executive who headed up the $1-million bid by the Columbia Theatre Heritage Trust to purchase and restore the Burr Theatre last year. “My board of directors, its knowledgeable advisors and the Friends of Raymond hope that this current proposal falls within technical specifications and affordability so that New Westminster can once again host travelling productions of a caliber enjoyed by audiences in comparable facilities to its neighbours in White Rock, Surrey, Burnaby and Coquitlam.” The proposal for a new performing arts space would see it being owned by the school board and leased to the city and the city’s hope is that it would be run by the Massey Theatre Society. The theatre would be included in a new high school built on the current New Westminster Secondary School site. “Hopefully, if this proposal is launched successfully, theatre patrons can be repatriated to a local venue and won’t have to travel outside New Westminster to spend their entertainment dollars,” said Eddy, who is the president of the society. Eddy said the society has approved funding for an annual theatre arts bursary at Douglas College beginning in 2011, the details of which are still being worked out between the society, the college and city staff. He said the group is also open to loaning some of their collection of Burr memorabilia to be displayed inside the new theatre.

Harley the cat has likely used up one of his nine lives. The two-year-old orange tabby was playing with his sister, Linden, outside his home near Queens Avenue and 10th Street on July 2 when someone cruelly dunked both cats up to their waists in paint thinner. As there were no traces of the chemical on either cats’ faces or front paws, feline foul play seems to be the only possible explanation as to how the animals became covered in the corrosive chemical. While Linden’s owner discovered the abuse shortly after it happened and was able to clean the cat off, Harley got away and was only discovered by his owner, Jennifer Szoke, hours later in agony with his tongue and throat severely burned from trying to lick off the toxic solvent. The cat has been at the Canada West Veterinary Hospital ever since, racking up a bill of nearly $18,000 in the process,

Redmond: Destroying Massey ‘bad idea’ ◗ continued from page 1

more to build a new theatre than to upgrade the Massey. “Tearing down the theatre doesn’t make any sense from a budget point of view,” he said. “Even if you get something close to the capacity of the Massey (1,275), the end result is you’ve probably spent millions of taxpayer dollars to get a smaller theatre. Right now, on the face of it, it looks like a bad idea.” A district-commissioned engineer’s report said it will cost $18 million to upgrade the current Massey Theatre to code. In the spring, the city also performed a theatre review to determine the cost of upgrading the Massey – the costs it came up with haven’t been released. The society was only given one day’s notice about the proposal to close the Massey and have the society run a new theatre. “If you are going to announce something, you might want to ask them if they want to,” Redmond said. “The problem is it’s all been done with extreme secrecy.” Redmond has been involved with the Massey for about 10 years. His tenure as chair of the society ends in October. “It’s been a very well-run theatre. It’s

been very well run because of the staff that we’ve had,” he said. “That’s why it’s distressing to see it destroyed. It’s never lived up to its potential as a theatre because it’s always been the orphaned child of the school board.” The school district is slated to hear from the public on the proposal in September. A number of parents – some of whom have waited almost a decade for a new school – have come out in favour of the latest plan. “The idea of a brand new 1,000-seat community theatre in the high school is very exciting,” Mary Ann McKenzie, chair of the New Westminster Secondary School’s parent advisory committee, said in a recent Record article. The Massey Theatre Society board met Monday afternoon to discuss the matter and formulate a response. At press time, the response hadn’t been issued. Redmond did write in an e-mail update about the meeting that the board “is neither opposing nor endorsing the proposals.” “The board thinks we need more information and an open discussion of the issues so the public can make an informed decision. I certainly agree with that position,” he wrote.

general crankiness seems to have taken hold of the electorate, which is bad news for politicians of all stripes. As a result, it has become increasingly difficult to have a rational political debate about various issues. I detect this anger on radio phone-in shows, in e-mails I get from viewers and readers and from posts on various forms of social media, including Facebook and personal blogs. And I hear from strangers who stop me on the street, ready to vent their hostility towards politicians and governments of various shapes and sizes. It’s not all directed at the B.C. Liberal government, although I think the Liberals attract the biggest portion of anger from voters right now. The other day, while walking down busy Government Street in downtown Victoria, I was accosted by two of the many merchants who have stores there. Yes, they said, they weren’t too happy about the HST, but what was really making them angry right now was the rising cost of

municipal property taxes. They pointed to a couple of recent store vacancies, attributed they said to property taxes in the tens of thousands of dollars. I just finished reading a few e-mails from folks upset about another B.C. Hydro rate hike, which comes even as the Crown corporation reports huge earnings every year. Last week, there was the reannouncement of the new Port Mann Bridge being a year ahead of completion. Nothing new there, except a reminder that everyone will be paying a rising toll for crossing it when it’s done in 2012. Throw in the carbon tax that went up again at the beginning of the month, plus the HST, which has boosted the price of everyone’s latte, and you’ve got a lot of reasons to explain why people appear to be so frustrated. I’m sure a lot of folks feel they are getting dinged everywhere they turn these days, and they’re tired of it. And so they are taking out their anger and frustration on institutions, officials and politicians. Check out some of the vitriolic bile to be found on the Internet. Google “Gordon Campbell” and “HST” and see what comes up. It’s not so much the websites that come off reading like the ravings of seriously

Pier park reclaims waterfront

Dear Editor:

In reading the letters to the editor over the last few months, one might get the impression that the community is not supportive of the city’s move to build a new waterfront park. Yet in talking to people from all across the city, I don’t believe the negative sentiments expressed in these letters are reflective of the community’s feeling towards this new park. New Westminster has a tremendous opportunity to reconnect with our riverfront. The community and economic benefits of reclaiming our waterfront and transforming it from a vacant, unusable piece of property into a riverfront city park are immense. The city has also been very fortunate to receive a $17 million grant from the provincial and federal ◗Angst Page 7 government to cover the cost of building two-thirds

of the park. These grants could easily have gone to another community if the city was not as dedicated to this project. This project will need to include a significant investment from the city, but as New Westminster continues to grow, I strongly believe that we need to support new amenities for the community. Over the past year, the city has engaged residents in the design of the new park. The result has been the development of a master plan that reflects the diverse needs of the community. Although the entire waterfront park will not be completed in the initial phase, the most important elements that were the highest priority for the community will be included. When work on the Westminster Pier Park is complete in the fall of 2011, the new park will include a large public square,

Train cause must go further Dear Editor:

Last month, I attended a meeting hosted by Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian. The event was concerning the noise along the Quay in New Westminster, generated by the four rail companies operating in a common yard. I am in full sympathy with this cause, but I feel it does not go far enough. We live directly adjacent to the tracks, owning a cubbyhole about 30 metres (100 feet) above ground level. We are subjected to large amounts of air pollution and noxious diesel fumes, from train engines, which idle for over an hour, at the oddest times of the day or night. Recently, I witnessed a taxi drive up to an idling train, which had been idling for one-and-a-half hours, delivering an engine crew and, finally, it left. I called a hotline number of the four railway companies recently to complain

about a CN train that was idling for more than 20 minutes. Oddly enough, it moved on within five minutes. In the last six years that I have been here, I am aware of at least four derailments in my backyard. I understand that another downtown Vancouver terminal is closed and rail traffic is now directed through here. Traffic is up. Good for the economy. But what happens if a load is toxic? Residents have not been told how to prepare, evacuate or whatever. I firmly believe that we need to work with the railways to create a win-win situation. Unfortunately, the people who call the shots are far away in eastern Canada or the U.S., and the bottom line is the economic benefits for them. So, to put it crudely, they don’t give a rip about Quayside residents. However, I’d love to meet them on their turf to look at ways so that we can make economic sense of the noise and air-quality situation and keep residents of the Quay healthy and happy, sane and able to pay their taxes. I think it can be done. However, we have to include other stakeholders in this discussion: the people at the municipal level who thought it was a good idea to transform old, abandoned dockyards alongside a rail bed into residential areas. And those at the regional/provincial level who regulate the environment and other health issues. We must not forget those at the national level who regulate the railways and their operations.

And it’s not just Campbell who is a target on the Internet. NDP leader Carole James seems to be despised by many of the same people who profess to be Campbell haters. Here she is with a 20plus point lead in opinion polls, and there are still those on the left who want to decapitate her leadership. Two recent articles in left-wing media outlets reflect the angst on the left. The comments following the articles, for the most part, excoriated

James and demanded that she step down before the next election. This doesn’t make sense. But it is further evidence of an irrational anger that is spread across the political spectrum. For example, it has been near impossible to have a rational debate on the HST. I’ve pointed out the NDP estimates the average “hit” to a consumer from the HST is about $520 annually, which works out to $10 a week or about $1.50 a day. But when I use those stats to make the point that the HST, while unpopular, may not be quite as horrific as some insist, I get denounced as a Liberal apologist or worse. Anyone who sticks their head up right now runs the risk of it getting shot off. The trouble is, I don’t

see any relief any time soon on any front. Unless the courts throw it out, the HST is likely here to stay. (In fact, even if court action derails it, I suspect it will only be temporary relief.) Our hydro rates will continue to increase for at least a few years. The carbon tax will go up again next year, and our municipal property taxes will continue to climb. And that Port Mann bridge toll will take effect a couple of years from now, and the prospect of more tolls cannot be discounted. Everyone will continue to get dinged, over and over again. Robbing a coffee shop that’s across the street from the police station is never a good idea. A 43-year-old man learned that lesson the hard way on Saturday morning. Early Saturday morning, two New Westminster police officers were going for morning coffee when they met the man and exchanged pleasantries. A short time later, with the officers still in the shop enjoying their coffee, they noticed the same man come back into the shop and start talking to the barista. According to New Westminster Police Service spokesperson Const. Bruce Carrie, the man walked directly to the till and started demanding money. “He then threw a large drink can at the employee, narrowly missing him,” said Carrie in a press release. “The offi-

cers looked at each other in disbelief and amazement prior to taking the male into custody.”

A New Westminster police officer sustained minor injuries after his marked police cruiser was involved in a collision early Sunday in the 200 block of Royal Avenue. Const. Ryan Phillips, along with a civilian passenger, was treated at Royal Columbian Hospital for soft tissue injuries and released later on Sunday. The incident began early Sunday when an off-duty Vancouver police officer reported that he was following a suspected impaired driver. Phillips, in a marked police cruiser, was patrolling in the Royal Avenue area. According to a press release from spokesperson Const. Bruce Carrie,

delays in environmental approvals. “The pile driving can’t start until we demolish the old wharf,” Purdie said. “They have started with the asphalt. That is being removed. Now they are pulling up the timbers that formed the deck.” According to Purdie, the demolition of the deck and the piling and decking work to come are part of one large contract that the city has awarded. The project will include two types of piling. Purdie said the timber piles that will be used to help stabilize the site will be the first to go into the ground and water. “There is literally thousands of them going in,” he said. “They literally drive them in like a pin cushion.” Steel piles will also be required to support the new concrete deck on which portions of the park will be located. ChristopherBell,whohas been critical of some aspects of the project, including costs and environmental issues, remains concerned about the brownfield site. He questioned why environmental testing continues to be done regarding the site’s groundwater. “My question is, what is going on?” he said. “They are testing for the groundwater, which is terribly toxic.” Purdie said there are “staged approvals” that have to be followed as the project proceeds. “FREMP (Fraser River

Local teens set to tame the shrew

Two New Westminster performers are appearing in the Carousel Theatre’s production of The Taming of the Shrew. The retelling of William Shakespeare’s play is inspired by the film Moulin Rouge, and runs from July 30 to Aug 14 on Granville Island. Luke McAndless-Davis, a New Westminster Secondary School student, is one of the local players performing in the upcoming show. The 15-year-old has performed in Theatre Replacement’s That Night Follows Day, Pacific Theatre’s You Still Can’t and Sorrento Centre’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar. He has always wanted to act, Luke says. “I have been interested in acting for as long as I can remember,” Luke writes in an e-mail, “but my passion really grew after I attending a few classes at Carousel Theatre.” He is playing the role of Christopher Sly. “Sly is along for the ride like the rest of the audience,” Luke says of his character. Sly is a drunk, Luke says, who is tricked by a local lord into believing he himself is a lord as well. This is Luke’s favourite role thus far, he says. “Sly is so much fun to play because of the ridiculous situations he is put in and his attempts to act lordly when really, he’s having a hard time just staying conscious.” At some point Luke would like to try the other end of the spectrum – playing the dramatic role of Hamlet. “His inner turmoil and the question of whether he is actually mad fascinates

Royal City residents recently took Mayor Wayne Wright’s advice to “vote early and vote often” to heart, beating out Nelson, B.C. in an online contest and raising $25,000 for the new Youth Centre at Moody Park and a street party. The Kraft Celebration Tour announced the results of the online voting on Monday and New Westminster clobbered Nelson by a score of 220,531 to 154,709 in the 24-hour contest that ran from 9 a.m.

For all the ups and downs this season, the New Westminster Salmonbellies are still in first place, and looking like the team of old after a 14-9 win over the Langley Thunder last week. The senior A lacrosse club shook off last week’s loss to last-place Burnaby with a solid team effort that eliminated the Thunder from playoff contention. Eleven separate players scored goals for the ’Bellies at Queen’s Park Arena last Thursday, while outshooting the Thunder 63-37 in a crisp outing that showcased many of New Westminster’s strengths. Transition runner Pete McFetridge scored a pair of early back-to-back goals to give the ’Bellies a 3-0 lead after just four minutes of play. Cliff Smith, captain Nenad Gajic and defender Wade Dewolff, with his first goal in three seasons, also scored in transition for New Westminster.

“It felt good to put the ball in the net,” said Dewolff, who picked up a turnover ball in his own end and ran the floor before finishing off his unassisted tally. “I think everybody realized what we had to do to get into the playoffs. It started (last) Monday at practice. It felt like ’Bellies lacrosse again.” That Salmonbellies lacrosse translated into almost 20 shots per period, lots of player movement on the floor, and all but four New Westminster players inking the scoresheet. The ’Bellies chased Langley starter Joe Bell from the net midway through the first period. Kevin Croswell came on in relief and made 43 saves for the Thunder. Matt Roik registered the win in goal with 28 stops. Smith led the Salmonbellies with two goals and two assists. Jamie Floris also had a four-point night. Tyler Crompton, with a pair of goals, Alex Gajic and Corbyn Tao all contributed three points apiece to the win. For the first time this season, all

three Gajic brothers, including Ilija in the opening period, scored a goal in the same game. “Everyone played their role. We didn’t rely on anyone to do it all for us,” Dewolff added. With missing players due back this week from the recently completed world field lacrosse championships in England, Dewolff says team practices will be more competitive than ever. “I think we got it. I think we can play like we did in the past,” Dewolff added. “We’ll have everyone back for playoffs. We’ll have everyone fighting for a spot in the playoffs.” A win in their final home game of the season would wrap up a second Western Lacrosse Association league title in three seasons for the senior A Salmonbellies. New Westminster finishes off its regular season against the Burnaby Lakers at Queen’s Park Arena on Thursday. Game time is 7:45 p.m. Burnaby needs a win to keep its faint playoff hope alive.

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and have been playing football since I was in the seventh grade. From very early on, I knew I wanted to play professional football and focusing on that goal kept me motivated to do well in high school and get in to university so I’d have an opportunity to realize my dream. After 10 seasons with the Lions, I still love coming to work every day and doing whatever I can on offence to help this club win a championship for the CFL’s best fans. Growing up, I saw firsthand what could happen to kids who don’t stay focused on their goals so I’m very aware of making sure my own children are surrounded by positive influences, whether it’s encouraging my teenage son to do well in high school or coaching my younger son’s football team. It’s also a big reason why I love taking part in our club’s community programs. Among the programs I take part in, I would say the Lions Pride program is one of the most rewarding because I’ve seen firsthand what happens to a young person’s life when they make the right choices. New Westminster ball team takes Games gold Trent Fletcher helped the Fraser River Delta zone 4 baseball team to a gold medal at the B.C. Summer Games in Langley last weekend. The hardball team doubled the zone 2 team from Thompson-Okangan 6-3 in the gold-medal final. Ethan Strome picked up two track and field medals. The first was a silver medal in the boys’ 200metre hurdles in a time of 27.05. Strome then earned a bronze medal along with Colin Donahoe in the boys’ 4x400m relay. Donahoe also placed seventh in the boys’ 1,500m steeplechase. Natasha Lazecki also picked up a second-place medal in the 200m hurdles. Lazecki clocked a time of 29.68 in the girls’ final. She was also fourth and fifth in the triple and long jump, respectively. Meghan Malkowich shared a silver on the zone girls’ softball team, following an 8-2 loss to Fraser Valley in the final.

Caity McMillan also earned a silver medal on the zone 4 girls’ volleyball team. Mihailo Stefanovic took bronze in the boys’ triple jump with a leap of 11.64m. Equestrian Natasha Sukorokoff placed third after the opening day of in the female jumper event. Jaycee Pineda helped the boys’ basketball team to the bronze with a 69-56 win over Vancouver IslandCentral Coast. Ryan Spencer earned a bronze on the zone 4 boys’ softball team. Ryan Donahoe and Javier Tudela won thirdplace medals with the Fraser River Delta boys’ field lacrosse team. Trevor Donald paired with Paul Whitmore of Burnaby for third in the boys’ 500m C2 canoe. Donald also placed eighth in the 2,000m open singles kayak. In all, New Westminster athletes won 12 medals, including seven bronze.
