The folks at the Port Royal Community Garden celebrated the expansion of their garden with the first ever Kites in Bloom celebration. The event took place on Saturday, July 10 at Port Royal in Queensborough. Organizers estimate about 400 people attended the firsttime event. “Fantastic,” Carrie Gogela, a member of the Port Royal Community Garden committee, said about the event. “It was a real hit. Two plots have been designated for growing food for the local food bank. The Kites in Bloom event includes a professional balloon artist, face painting, food, refreshments and prizes. Members of New Westminster city council will be getting raises of nearly four per cent. On Monday, city council approved an updated remuneration policy that includes pay increases and separation allowances for members of city council. The mayor’s annual salary will increase from $81,987 to $86,878, and councillors’ remuneration will increase from $31,534 in 2009 $34,089. Mayor Wayne Wright believes citizens get good value from their elected officials, as they all put a lot of time into their council jobs. “They are very communityminded,” said Wright. In May, the city sought input into a review of council pay. A staff report said that generated “limited media or public response” in the form of three newspaper articles, one letter to the editor and one e-mail. No one spoke about the proposed changes at the May 17 council meeting, when delegations were being heard on the issue. “I think we are there,” Wright said, when asked if the increases were fair. A staff report provided council with a lower range, mid range and upper range amount for councillors and mayors in the region. The city’s practice has been to apply the mid-range when adjusting council members’ pay. A policy established in 2001 provides the method used to calculate changes to city council’s ◗Council Page 8

Riverboat to the rescue MV Native paddlewheeler comes to the aid of two stranded boaters BY ANDREW FLEMING REPORTER afleming@royalcityrecord.com
A routine dinner cruise on the Fraser took an unexpected turn for the dramatic on Saturday when the crew of the local paddlewheeler MV Native came steaming to the rescue of two stranded men. The riverboat had just set off from her berth near the foot of the Inn at Westminster Quay around 7 p.m. when alert crew spotted the men stranded in the water after the Sea-Doo they were riding began sinking. “Thank God we were there,” said Paddlewheeler Riverboat Cruises owner Frank Froebel. “They were struggling and trying to hang onto the vessel, but it was just going down.” Froebel said paddlewheelers, which were once a common sight on the Fraser a century ago, are highly manoeuvrable, and the experienced captain had no trouble pulling up alongside the two men. Froebel then extended a pole and, with help from his crew, managed to pull them aboard and tie the sinking Sea-Doo to the side. “I just happened to be going for a walk with friends, and I saw the whole thing,” said local resident Julia Schoennagel, who sent photos she took of the action to The Record. “The two Sea-Dooers were two swimmers by the time the paddlewheeler got to them. After they got them on board, I guess they just took the two guys off for dinner because they went off on their way again. You can’t exactly turn back again with a hundred or so people on a dinner cruise on board.” Froebel, who was unaware he even had an onshore audience for the rescue, laughed at the suggestion the two men joined the tour for dinner. “I don’t think they were in the mood for a free dinner cruise,” he said. “All they wanted to do was get to shore. I think they were quite embarrassed actually.” The unidentified men were instead dropped off at Brownsville Bar Park, where they had first set off from. Froebel suspects the men probably put a hole in the bottom of their Sea-Doo after hitting a piece of wood, adding it was the Native’s first rescue in 21 years of operating on the Fraser River.

New Westminster city council has endorsed the contents and timeline of the future multi-use civic centre in order to meet critical deadlines. The centre, which is being funded through gaming grants, will be located at the corner of
Eighth and Columbia streets. In order to meet the construction timelines, council needed to confirm the programming elements of the centre by July 12. Grant Turnbull, project manager, said major milestones have been identified in order to complete the project on schedule. The plan is to begin construction on Jan. 1, 2012, and complete con-
struction by Oct. 31, 2013. It hasn’t been determined how many levels of below-grade parking will be provided at the centre, Turnbull said. Because of soil conditions, work on the belowgrade parking will take place in the summer of 2012. Detailed design work on the civic centre will get underway in September.
Brenda Beck, principal of B.E Beck and Associates, said the centre will include four major components – theatre space, arts space, museum and archives space and conference and multiuse space. Reception space, banquet space for up to 500 people, multipurpose rooms, art studios, pottery studios, rehearsal spaces,
and permanent and temporary galleries will be included within those four programming areas. Beck said a combined fine arts/temporary museum gallery is proposed for the building. Located next to the New Westminster Museum’s temporary gallery space, the fine arts ◗Gallery Page 8

Work is getting underway that could see changes to next year’s municipal elections in British Columbia. The province has given the green light to implement 31 recommendations from the Local Government Elections Task Force. “The province is now in a position to proceed with drafting the legislation necessary to implement the recommendations,” Minister of Community and Rural Development Ben Stewart said in a press release. “We expect the
legislation to be introduced next spring, in time for the local elections in November 2011. There is a lot of hard work ahead to flesh out the details of the recommendations, such as how to establish expense limits that will work in B.C.’s diverse communities, but we’re confident the end result will have a positive impact on

Who should lead the Liberals? IN THE HOUSE

he legislature is a fairly quiet place these days, as our politicians are scattered far and wide for the summer. But their absence hasn’t ended the main political guessing game in this province. That game is about trying to figure out if there is any hope of a revival of B.C. Liberal fortunes, and if so, who is going to create it. A lot of names have been kicked around, but it would seem only one person has a realistic hope of breathing life into the party and returning it to competitive status come the 2013 election. That person’s name? Carole Taylor. Of all the potential heirs to Gordon Campbell’s leadership, only Taylor can separate herself from the current government, particularly over the issue of the HST. When she was finance minister, she opposed bringing the HST to this province. Among her reasons was a refusal to give up all kinds of exemptions to the tax and reluctance to cede authority over the sales tax to the federal government.

But her potential strengths go much deeper than that. As finance minister she racked up some hefty budget surpluses and gained a reputation as an able, pragmatic and non-ideological politician (although there are likely many people who never really viewed her as a politician in the traditional sense of a partisan combatant). Her public image is one built on achievement, likability and even glamour. On all these fronts, she scores much better than any other potential leadership candidate. But a key strength is her ability to go to the voters with clean hands, to make the argument that she had nothing to do with the things that made the B.C. Liberals so unpopular over a relatively short period of time. Speculation abounds over Gordon Campbell’s future. Personally, I think he will announce sometime next year or early 2012 that he won’t be running again. Of course, if there’s a miracle turnaround in the polls – an eventuality that appears extremely remote – he may well choose to stick around. But he once told me that he thought 10 years in the premier’s chair was a good benchmark of political success, and that means the due date would be May 2011.
Looming deadlines threaten funding for city projects

Our city has been offered a large financial gift of $35 million for a multi-use facility from Starlight Casino. This funding was negotiated by the city in 2007, and the funds must be used to pay for the complex that has to be completed by 2013. It was a big surprise for our civic officials who held an open house consultation on June 10 to find out, according to Coun. Bill Harper, chair of the arts and cultural commission, that there is “some genuine confusion in the community about the components of the arts centre in the future civic centre.” I have two questions for New Westminster city officials: ◗Leadership Page 7 1) If you knew that this project must be completed by
2013 or we lose the funding and you knew the terms of the deal in 2007, why did you wait until June of 2010 to invite the people of New Westminster to an open house to find out what they would like to see in this facility? 2) Why do this city’s leaders and officials seem to only get on with improvements in the city when deadlines approach with the threat of losing grants or funding? A few examples are: the parks and trails in Queensborough that must be completed by year end; the final agreement of New Westminster Secondary School building plan, which is holding up provincial funding for the needed construction of an elementary, middle and high school (the latter should have been built 10 years ago); the waterfront pier park (now granted a small extension); and the civic centre.

B.C. behind on clean energy New Westminster headed Dear Editor: by some big spenders
Back in the 1990s, young people like myself were leaving B.C. in great numbers and heading to places like Alberta, where the economic conditions and opportunities were much better. That’s a sad situation to be in. Alberta may not have any provincial sales tax, and it may not have any debt, but it’s not home either. Fortunately, the tide has now changed, and B.C. is once again a province of opportunity and a far more attractive place for those of us who want to stay. All of the economic indicators for B.C. have been pointing in the right direction, and we’re leading the country, in most areas. The one area where we’re falling behind, however, is in the critically important renewable energy and clean technology sector. Ontario recently stole the clean energy lead from B.C., and that represents jobs and opportunities that could have been ours here in B.C. If this province wants to keep its young people, then it’s going to have to redouble its efforts and regain the lead position in clean energy and technology.

Someone coined the phrase “New Westminster, a little city with a big heart,” (but it’s) headed by some big spenders. The hours and money spent having city employees research local Chinese history; the money spent on a new park few will have access to; the money being spent on a new community/theatre complex, where parking is minimal and traffic maximum. I recently read an article (in the Vancouver Sun) on former Vancouver mayor Art Phillips and his many achievements (i.e. conversion of the False Creek industrial area, creation of a property-endowment fund, his fight against a waterfront freeway and banning expressways in the city to saving the historic Orpheum Theatre). “He and his party stood for fiscally conservative yet socially progressive policies.” Any chance we can get him to run for mayor of New Westminster? Leadership: Plenty of ambitious Liberals ◗ continued from page 6
His departure would theoretically mean a leadership race in the party. But there doesn’t have to be one. The NDP, for example, opted to let Mike Harcourt – fresh from Vancouver city hall – take over the party leadership unopposed in 1987. The New Democrats were mindful how much damage a messy leadership fight can do to a party, particularly when things don’t go as planned and a longshot candidate whom no one really wanted as leader ends up being just that (remember Bob Skelly?). The B.C. Liberals, however, seem to have no end of people whose ambition may lead them to reach for the leader’s position. Cabinet ministers such as Rich Coleman, Kevin
Falcon, Mike de Jong, Shirley Bond, George Abbott and even the beleaguered Colin Hansen all get mentioned when talk turns to a party leadership race. But they appear to all be hamstrung by the fallout over the HST, and even if the public grudgingly accepts the tax, I’m not sure they’re going to forgive the politicians responsible for it. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts is also talked about as leadership material, but her inexperience at the provincial level may create enough doubts to nix a winning candidacy. This brings us back to Carole Taylor. She hasn’t actually said she’d even be interested in taking the job, but that’s to be the expected response as long as Campbell is still the boss. And with Campbell

likely to remain leader for another year or so, it is premature for the B.C. Liberals to allow any public speculation by their own people on the leadership issue. But privately, you know they’re all thinking about it. And if they want to survive, they had better have a game plan. It appears the best such plan would see all those leader wannabes check their egos at the door and allow Taylor to win by acclamation. That could set up a historic fight in 2013: Carole versus Carole. Not only would that guarantee an elected female premier in this province for the first time ever, but it would likely ensure this province sticks close to the political centre. he Elizabeth Fry Association of Vancouver is ensuring that children are able to experience some summer fun. The association is introducing free summer day camps as part of its program to support the unique needs of children who have parents involved in the justice system. Beginning July 12, the association is hosting 96 children aged six to nine in six weeklong camps. “When parents commit crimes, children pay a price,” said executive director Shawn Bayes in a press release. “They lose access to their parent, and when that parent is the mother, they often lose their sole caregiver, their home, their school and their friends. One in three will themselves commit a crime. We can help change that by creating supported opportunities for normalcy. And what’s more normal than summer camp?” Four camp leaders will guide 16 children each week in typical camp experiences such as sports activities and outings to a Vancouver Canadians baseball game, Maplewood Farm and tea at the Hotel Vancouver. Campers will also learn vital coping, leadership and team-building skills. “We didn’t want cost to be a barrier, so EFry Summer Day Camp is free to participants and lunch is provided,” Bayes said. “We hope to recover some of the $250 per child operational costs though private sector donations.” Nike Canada and the Forani Group are supporting the camp through donations of sports equipment. Space is still available, so interested parents or caregivers can call 604-520-1166 for registration details. The Elizabeth Fry Society of Great Vancouver provides support services to women, girls and children at risk of involvement, involved in or affected by the justice system. Its programs are intended to break the cycle of poverty, addiction, mental illness, homelessness and crime.

illing potholes, planning neighbourhoods, picking up garbage are but a few of the many jobs carried out by city employees. Some city employees have lesser-known duties that fly under the radar. In the coming weeks, we’ll highlight some of these jobs in Odd Jobs in the City. This issue, Theresa McManus talks to Sandy Earle, the city’s active communities programmer.

An annual program offered by city staff helps keep track of health and fitness levels of their fellow city employees. As part of the city’s corporate wellness program, city staff does annual health assessments of employees at various city facilities including city hall, Century House and the engineering operations yard. “We keep track of it for everybody,” said active communities programmer Sandy Earle. “This is the third year in a row we have done it. For people trying to make some changes, it is very good.” The health assessments include a blood pressure check, as well as measurements of weight, height, bone density, body fat and

hydration levels. Earle notes that these assessments are really useful when done yearly because staff can see where they’ve improved and what they need to work on. Between the 2008 and 2009 assessments, staff who returned for a followup assessment had lost a total of 86 pounds. Staff from the city’s parks, culture and recreation department assessed 67 employees last year and are hoping to do even more assessments this year. “It gives them a metabolic age, whether they are older or younger,” Earle said. “For people who are really fit, they end up around 12. There’s not too many of those.” IN A new feature this year is fitness assessments, which include cardio and strength testing and flexibility assessments. “As far as the fitness testing, we have probably got about 15 people signed up,” Earle said. “That is a little bit more involved.” The City of New Westminster established a corporate wellness committee in the spring of 2008. Its initiatives have included Move for Health Day in May, Healthy Workplace Month in October, Bike to Work Week in June, fitness classes for
staff that run during the lunch hour all year long, lunch-and-learn seminars on health related topics and the annual fitness and health assessments. “It’s always fun at engineering operations,” Earle said about doing the assessments. “They are a little bit competitive about who has the best blood pressure.” David Creighton, manager of Centennial Community Centre, said the goal is to encourage city employees to be active and to improve their level of physical fitness. “It can be motivating for people,” he said. “It encourages them. It’s about awareness too.” The assessments are a small THE CITY part of the parks, culture and recreation department’s workload but part of an increasing emphasis on corporate wellness. The first time I set foot inside Empire Stadium was on Saturday, Nov. 26, 1960 for the 48th annual Grey Cup Game. In 1960 I was 10 years old and this was the first time that I attended a professional football game. It was the first time that I attended any professional game. The Ottawa Rough Riders defeated Edmonton 16 to 6 to become the 1960 Grey Cup Champions and Ron Stewart of the Ottawa Rough Riders was the Grey Cup’s Most Valuable Player. Before the game there was the Grey Cup parade. My dad was a sea cadet officer with the Captain Vancouver Corp in Stanley Park and the cadets were part of the parade. As I watched the parade it was like waiting for Christmas morning; I couldn’t wait to get to Empire Stadium. Finally
the parade ended and my dad, still in uniform, got me and we went to the game. Arriving at Empire Stadium the sounds, smells, and the entire goings-on put my head on a pivot, for I did not want to miss any of this first-time experience. We waited in line with our tickets and then waited in line at the concession stands. Now well prepared with hotdogs, Coke and peanuts, we walked through the small tunnel entrance and for the first time I could see Empire Stadium from the inside. Both teams were on the field warming up. Punters were punting, kickers were kicking field goals, quarterbacks were throwing to receivers, linemen were going over their blocking techniques and there was just so much to watch at one time. I had been to a three-ring circus but this was so much more. My dad pointed out Vic Chapman. When you are a child you may sometimes refer to parent’s close friend as Aunty or Uncle, even though he or she is not a blood relative. Vic Chapman was my Uncle Vic. Many times Uncle Vic had been at our house. Dad reminded me that it was Uncle Vic who had given us the tickets to the game. As Uncle Vic was practising close to the track, my dad encouraged me to go down to the rail and wave to him. I went down the stairs, zigzagging between the people trying to get to their seats and as I got to the rail I called out to Uncle Vic. How he heard me above all the noise I do not know. He ran over and asked me how the seats were. The announcer asked for our attention and there was such a fanfare going on before the game. Introductions of the many important people that were there that day, the introductions of the starting lineups for both sides, the flip of the coin for the kickoff, and then finally the kickoff and the
game was on. My eyes never left the field. The action was a continuous assault upon both my vision and hearing. Hearing the pro-Edmonton, crowd gasp as the ball was thrown to a receiver and then a quiet hush as the ball fell through his fingertips. I loved everything about it. I wanted nothing to change. To me, football had to be played in this way in this stadium. Over the years there were many more times that I visited Empire Stadium. I watched the Lions roar; there were concerts, and track and field events. As a high school football player I played at Empire Stadium against the Notre Dame Jugglers in the 1969 Shrine Bowl. Unfortunately we lost. I believe that we were the last game on real grass at Empire Stadium. A few years later as a player for the Vancouver Meralomas, I returned to Empire Stadium to play in the Junior Big Four Football League. It was quite something for me to play for the Vancouver Meralomas. For it was with the Meralomas that my Uncle Vic had played part of his football career. His picture still hangs on the clubhouse wall in the president’s room. Yes, Empire Stadium holds many memories for me. I was sad the day they tore it down. But now I rejoice at the realization that I will take my 22year-old, son to a Lions game at Empire Stadium. It won’t be like 1960, it won’t be for the Grey Cup, but it will be the continuation of a tradition. My dad took me to my first game at Empire Stadium and even though I have taken my son to the dome, he has yet to experience Empire Stadium: the sounds, the smells, the whole experience of watching football outdoors in a grand old stadium. Empire Stadium should remain and be used as a sports and entertainment complex at least until my son can take his son to Empire (Stadium) Field.

Art examines diversity
Art exhibitions at the New Westminster Public Library are taking a look at our diverse society. In the reference department, Creative Youth is a display by young immigrant adults of the North Shore Multicultural Society’s Get Connected program. Through creative art projects, facilitated by art instructor Gabriela Diaconu and program coordinator Saba Golchin, students have expressed their personal journeys as new immigrants to Canada. On the ramp gallery, community is also explored with the exhibit My
Neighbourhood, My City. Presented by the New Westminster Museum and Archives, the exhibit affirms the connection between people, their stories and their neighbourhoods and how these memories have become the soul of the community. The Heritage Grill is adding a new form of entertainment to its menu. Already home to musical acts and drag show nights, Heritage Grill owner Paul Minhas and chef Ron Wiginton have joined forces with mystery producer Trevor Jenkins to stage the Heritage Grill’s first participatory mystery show. The event will include a four-course meal and live dinner theatre. A press release notes that professional actors will perform scripted lines and also interact with the audience. The event also includes an opportunity for participants to stand up and tell their best joke, with the winner (selected by applause) receiving a prize. Rotarian helped the city
A longtime member of the Rotary Club of New Westminster passed away July 6 at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock. Don McKenzie, a member of the club since 1956, is a past president of
The Biggest Little Garden project may have originated in New Westminster, but it continues to attract interest around the world. Fraserside Community Service launched the program in May 2007, with a plan to create eight to 10 gardens in the first year. Instead, 54 of the three-tiered garden containers were distributed in the inaugural year. The free program provides the means for New Westminster residents living in apartments or townhouses to have access to home grown, fresh vegetables. Fraserside has received interest in the program from places around the world, and some nearby communities are now implementing the program. “We have franchised this program,” said Diane Cairns, director of Fraserside’s Living Well programs. “Burnaby is looking at getting it next year.” In New Westminster, Fraserside distributed about 50 planters in each of the first two years and 70 in each of years three and four. The New Westminster minor lacrosse association keeps finding ways to top even itself. For the first time, New Westminster won medals in every division at the provincial female box lacrosse championships in Port Moody Sunday. New Westminster won three gold medals, one silver and two bronze in four separate divisions at the annual B.C. championships. Salmonbellie teams took gold in the peewee, bantam and midget divisions, while also earning a bronze at the junior level. In all, seven New Westminster teams qualified for the B.C.s, including a third midget team that placed fourth overall. Individual New Westminster players, peewee Delaney Davidson, bantam Ahsley Smith and midget Mackenzie Ballance, also won three of four provincial MVP awards. “It was a busy weekend and good to see so many New Westminster teams qualified,” said assistant midget 1 coach Kevin Ballance. “All three teams medalled last year as bantams.” But with the focus on team balance, the midget 1 team stood out, winning all five of its games, including a come-from-behind 9-8 win in overtime over Coquitlam in the opening

Down 6-1 at one point in the game, New Westminster fought its way back into the game before Leah Purdey capped the win with a backhanded breakaway goal. It was clear sailing after that. Goalie Gracie Wardle stood tall in the New West goal in the gold-medal final, allowing just one goal in a 7-1 triumph over Coquitlam. In the final, Emily
Nottingham shut down Coquitlam’s top gun, while all-star Shaya Sandhu and Lauren Stewart led the front end. The midget 3 and 2 teams placed third and fourth, respectively. The No. 3 midget team just missed a spot in the final following a close 4-1 loss to Coquitlam in the semifinal. The score was 2-1 for Coquitlam with 12 minutes to play in the game before the eventual final-
ists potted a pair of goals on the power play. Emily Goss, Rhianne Wilkinson and captain and all-star Melissa Caviglia were all a force on the floor. Tristan Ranford also had a strong tournament. Selam Eyob was named to the all-star team from New West’s midget 2 team. New Westminster dominated at the peewee level as well, with Team 1 defeating Team 2 4-3 in a close gold-medal final.
Nadine Stewart scored the game-winning goal on a pass from behind the goal by Olivia Malcom with just five minutes left. “That was awesome having two teams in the final. The teams are so close. Two ’Bellies named to lax Hall
Bob Stewart of Burnaby was one of nine new members named to the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame Thursday. Stewart, who is better known in recent decades for his work in the New Westminster Salmonbellies organization, was named as a builder along with Terry Lloyd of Oshawa, Ont. Stewart devoted more than 60 years to the game as a player, coach, general manager and administrator. As a player, Stewart began in North Burnaby in 1947 and later shared in three provincial championships and two Minto Cups in 1954 and ‘56 with the PNE Indians and Mount Pleasant Legion junior teams. He later coached in South Burnaby in the 1970s. Stewart then returned to lacrosse in 1986 as the GM of the junior Salmonbellies until 1992. He then took over the job as GM with the senior ‘Bellies for the next four seasons. Stewart has remained active in the Salmonbellies executive to this day. Also earning induction in the player category is current Salmonbellies assistant GM Ken Thomas. Thomas spent two of his 13 seasons in the Western Lacrosse Association with the Burnaby Lakers. Joining Thomas in the box player category was Tyson Leies of Victoria and Ken Webb of Surrey in the veterans category.

New Westminster lacrosse coach Warren Goss knows he has a special group of players. The bantam New Westminster Salmonbellies rode a 41-3-1 season record to a second provincial box lacrosse championship in Richmond Sunday. The bantam ’Bellies defeated Port Coquitlam 9-3 in the A1 bantam final to win a third B.C. title as a group. They also won the box title last year, as well as an under-12 field provincial gold. “It was a great weekend for lacrosse in New Westminster,” said Goss, referring also to the
girls’ provincials where New Westminster took six division medals, including a bronze in the midget ranks where he also coaches. Mitchell Flintoff, game MVP and captain Jordan Mckenzie and provincial MVP Connor Robinson led the Royal City team to the banner. Robinson had his second straight multi-goal game after a hat trick in a 9-4 semifinal win over Juan de Fuca to avenge the team’s only defeat in the tournament, an earlier 4-3 loss to the Vancouver Island club. Drew Belgrave also potted a pair of goals in the semifinal win. But winning the banner was
an overall team effort, Goss said. “I have 15 runners who I could put out at any particular moment or situation and they would excel,” said Goss. Underscoring the accomplishment was New Westminster goalie Laiton Manuel, who posted a goals against average of under three at the provincials. Goss also credited his assistant coaches, Kyle Robinson, Mark Negrin and Blake Duncan, who are all currently playing in the B.C. Junior A league playoffs, with helping to mould a winner. “They’re going to stay together for a while,” Goss said of the Photo submitted/THE RECORD team. “I’m just going to jump on the bandwagon for a while.” Gold again: This is a third B.C. title for core group of Salmonbellies.

Coquitlam stepped back on the podium at the 25th annual Jack Crosby novice memorial all-star lacrosse tournament in Burnaby. The Coquitlam gold team outscored Ontario’s Oakville Hawks 10-7 in an entertaining gold-medal final in the advanced division at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre Sunday. Eric Bouma scored four goals, including the first of three third-period goals that iced the association’s first win since 2006. Daniel Miller potted the game-winner for the gold, capping a three-goal surge in the opening minutes of the third period. Oakville, a winner of the intermediate division at the Crosby tourney in 2008, got goals from six individual players, including team MVP Connor Pickford who potted a pair of counters in the final frame. Daniel Sudiro tallied a hat trick for the winners. Gabriel Procyk, with a goal and one assist, was Coquitlam’s MVP in the gold-medal final. Burnaby’s advanced team finished third, behind Oakville and Coquitlam gold, with a record of 2-2 in the blue pool. Burnaby defeated Juan de Fuca 5-4 in a fifth-place consolation match on Jacob Fetchko’s game-winning tally. Michael Hajdu, Aidan Guld, Trevor O’Reilly and Basil Cooper, who was named to the advanced allstar team, also scored in the
crossover match. Port Coquitlam defeated New Westminster 8-3 in the bronze medal game. Josh Van Os, Travis Peterson and Cameron Husband scored for New West. Burnaby 2 finished without a win in the intermediate tier 1 division. Burnaby’s Tyler Eckert scored two goals and Nicolas Fernandes also tallied in a 7-3 loss to Saanich following pool play. Dylan Bondi was named to the tier 1 all-star squad. Colorado, coached by former senior A Burnaby Laker Steve Govett, easily won the tier 1 gold 183 over PoCo in the final game. Saanich finished with the bronze. In the tier 2 bracket, Burnaby 1 lost the bronze medal 6-4 to Kamloops. Shea Janke and Cole Malmquist both scored a pair of goals for the home association. Burnaby advanced to the semifinals against eventual champion Cowichan Valley with a 7-6 win in overtime over Saanich. Malmquist, with three goals, and tier 2 all-star Devin Prasad, with a pair, did most of the scoring. Burnaby goalie Braeden O’Hanley was also named an all-star. Cowichan defeated New Westminster 10-4 in the final game. Tournament all-star Colton McKenzie tallied a hat trick for the tier 2 silver medallists. Although this was the third all-star tournament since Jack Crosby’s passing in January of 2008, it’s still an emotional and exciting time, said son Mike Crosby after the event. “It’s about the kids,” Crosby said. “To see this tournament to be as successful as it is makes those feelings go away, replacing the tears with the smiles.”

B.C. Junior Lacrosse League playoff series to the Delta Islanders in straight games, falling 9-7 at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre Sunday. Jackson Decker led the Lakers again in a desperate attempt to force a deciding game. The clever right-hander scored four goals and helped out on a fifth
to lead all scorers, but it proved not enough despite a wide disparity in shots in Burnaby’s favour. “It’s just disappointing leaving the playoffs in the first round. Last year was way more fun, challenging the No. 1 team,” said Decker.“It’s tough having a lot of changes in the dressing room.”
The New Westminster Salmonbellies remained in top spot in the Western Lacrosse Association despite a two-game split with the Maple Ridge Burrards. The senior A Salmonbellies defeated Maple Ridge 9-7 at Queen’s Park Arena last Thursday. The Burrards then returned the favour with a similar 9-7 scoreline in Maple Ridge on Sunday. Thursday’s game marked the debut of Alex Gajic, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2008, in a Salmonbellies uniform. Alex responded to the warm reception at Queen’s Park with a three-point night, including his first WLA goal at 14:20 of the third period that sparked a fourgoal rally that proved the difference in the outcome. Alex also set up brother Ilija Gajic with the gamewinner in the final minute of play. In Maple Ridge, all three Gajic brothers were in the lineup, including captain Nenad. Alex garnered a third game star, leading all scorers with his first league hat trick in a six-point night. “I feel alright. I felt better than I thought I would,” said Alex after Thursday’s game. “I don’t feel out of place. I feel like a part of the team already.” That was noticeable from his opening shift at home. With his first touch of the ball, Alex sent a cross-floor pass to Cliff Smith in position in front of the goal that just failed to click. On his third shift, Alex played a pick-and-roll with game first star Tyler Crompton to perfection, but could not beat keeper Ron Schibild with an overhead fake. The fourth time out on the floor, Alex took a Corbyn Tao pass at the goalie circle and forced Schibild to make another huge stop. “I noticed that right away. We came out so confident. But we have to come out harder,” said Alex. “If you have confidence you can do some things. Confidence is a big factor.” In Maple Ridge, the Burrards had a big second period, scoring four times on 25 shots on Matt Roik to take control 6-4. Tao added two goals and two assists in the loss. In Thursday’s victory, Tyler Richards got the win in goal with a 40-save performance. Crompton led the ’Bellies with two goals and one assist. Schibild had 86 stops for the Burrards in goal in the back-to-back series with New Westminster. The Salmonbellies do not have a home game at Queen’s Park this Thursday. The Salmonbellies will be in Burnaby on Friday. Game time is 7:45 p.m.

The team’s only loss of the tournament was a 6-2 defeat by Team 2 on opening day. The win over the eventual champs was a doubleedged sword, said Team 2 coach Rich Browning. “I don’t have a problem with that. It was a good thing for both of us,” Browning said. “It was a fantastic game and the outcome is what it is. … The two teams just played hard. It was a credit to all the kids.” Both New Westminster peewee teams finished with a record of 4-1 at the provincials. Monica Dosinjh was named to the all-star team from Team 2. The bantam girls also won gold at the provincials with a perfect 5-0 mark, just one week after placing first in a prestigious full-contact tournament in Calgary. New Westminster goalie Ashley Smith backstopped the wins, posting an incredible sub-two goals against average at the provincials. Nicole Shanks scored two goals, including the game-winning tally while shorthanded in the final two minutes of play in a 3-2 win over Coquitlam in the championship final. Ellelan Degiffe also scored in the game. New West also had to come up big over Burnaby in the semifinals to advance. With the game scoreless into the final two minutes of play, Degiffe and Tara Stamberg, with the gamewinner, scored in a 2-0 victory over Burnaby. Alison Shanks was

A busy 10 days: The New Westminster bantam girls followed up a tournament win in Calgary last week with a gold medal at the minor female lacrosse provincials in Port Moody Sunday. named to the bantam allstar team. The gold was also a first for the New West coach, who had just silver and bronze medals to show for his involvement at previous provincial championships. “This is kind of sweet for me, too,” said New Westminster bantam head coach Duncan Shanks. New Westminster’s junior girls’ team was unlucky to come away with the bronze medal. The juniors registered just one loss at the provincials, but it came in the allimportant semifinal – an 8-3 loss to eventual runnerup Burnaby. “We lost just one game but it just happened to be the wrong one,” said New West coach Calvin Corbett. “The story is we play a typical New Westminster pickand-roll, cut game, while (Burnaby) play an aggressive, physical style that we don’t match up well with,” said Corbett. It was just the fourth loss of the season for the New West team. The juniors rallied to defeat Coquitlam 8-1 for the bronze. Leah Catton and goalie Paige Smith were standouts for the juniors. Jessica Goodwin was named to the
junior all-star team and Fair Play award winner. “They are an exceptional group of young women who genuinely love the game of lacrosse,” Corbett added. And in a nutshell, that is one of the reasons for the minor association’s continued excellence over the years in the girls’ game. Other reasons are coaching and cooperation, said the association president. “Absolutely. It says a lot about the coaching and the energy this community has for lacrosse,” said Stewart. “We have a lot of kids that play. They’re energetic about lacrosse and it starts with the senior Salmonbellies. Our coaching is better than any other association. Our kids know how to play lacrosse.” Perhaps the biggest difference between New Westminster and other minor associations is how the players are treated, Stewart added. From the junior girls on down, teams are outfitted and scheduled floor time equitably, he added. “It goes a long way. The boys don’t get anything that the girls don’t get. We have 40 teams and we start from there and work our way down, with equipment, floor time and jerseys.”
City gives funding for Little League B.C.s City council approved funding to the New Westminster Baseball Association for the upcoming major Little League provincial championships at Justin Morneau Field July 23 to Aug. 2. The City of New Westminster will provide up to $3,500 towards hosting a welcome barbecue at the provincials,” said association president Ed Zacharuk. “We’re very excited about the tournament and are grateful to the city for their help,” Zacharuk said in an association press release. “It shows that the city understands and appreciates all the hard work and money that New West baseball has put into park facilities at both Moody
and Queen’s.” In the last few years, the association has spent close to $60,000 upgrading facilities thanks to funds provided by many of its sponsors, according to the release. The improvements include a batting cage, new netting and a new electronic scoreboard at Justin Morneau Field. A second scoreboard, purchased for Queen’s Park, is awaiting installation. The major league championships will begin next Friday with eight teams of 11and 12-year-olds from throughout B.C. The winner will represent B.C. at the Canadian championships.
