New Westminster’s animal control service is urging residents to be vigilant in protecting their cats after a disturbing report about possible animal abuse. A resident contacted the city Monday to report an incident that occurred in the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood on Friday, July 2. “Her cat came running home, crying. It was saturated – they believe it was paint thinner,” said Nancy Millar, animal services officer. “His front legs and head were dry. It was like someone had picked him up and dipped him.” The resident had just noticed a neighbour’s cat was sitting on its patio. The cat was also soaking wet, but its owners weren’t home at the time. “When she picked up her cat, it reeked of what they believe was paint thinner,” Millar said. “She was able to bathe it.” The other cat, however, was stuck on the patio and the liquid is believed to have been absorbed into its body. It is now being cared for by a veterinarian and isn’t doing well. The cats belong to people living in the 1000 block of Queens Avenue. A file has been opened with New Westminster Police Service. Anyone with information is asked to call 604-525-5411. “We want people to be vigilant and keep an eye on their pets,” Millar said. “If anyone knows of anything, please contact New Westminster police.”

McFadyen, a member of Century House, wrote a submission stating that funds could be put toward equipment and furnishings in the new youth centre. Outdoor Burning Open burning of yard waste or garbage is a potential fire hazard. It also impacts the air quality in our region. New Westminster Fire Protection Bylaw 6940 prohibits the open air burning of any garden refuse, any and all waste material from construction sites or any land clearing materials. Outdoor Fire Places A great variety of outdoor fireplaces are for sale at hardware stores and garden centres. Although they are legal to sell, they are illegal to use within the City boundaries. Fluorescent Light Bulbs Now Accepted at Recycling Depot Starting July 2, 2010, New Westminster residents will be able to return Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) and fluorescent tubes at the New Westminster Recycling Depot. While these bulbs and tubes are more energy efficient, they do contain a small amount of mercury and must be safely recycled. Ballenas Project Management is aiming to build its third project in the Royal City. The developer has applied for a rezoning and a special development permit for 125 Columbia St. It hopes to build a 20-storey residential tower on the site that’s located near Albert Crescent park and the B.C. Transit Authority Police Services office. Coun. Bill Harper questioned the 777 square feet of commercial space being provided on the ground level and wondered if more should be included. He also expressed concern that council sometimes rezones sites and they then sit inactive. Senior planner Barry Waitt said the applicant has taken steps that give the city “some degree of confidence” that the project will proceed. Mayor Wayne Wright said Ballenas has a “magnificent track record” in New Westminster, having previously built new residential housing atop the police station on Columbia Street and the new Interurban at the corner of Begbie and Columbia streets. “This is his third project in the city,” he said. “That is the site that was having difficulty with anybody looking at it.” Wright said the site is located at the far end of Columbia Street, so commercial space may not be very viable at this time. Waitt pointed out that the city’s current plan includes the option of providing street-front commercial space at that site. “In that particular area, it is not designated as being mandatory.” Coun. Betty McIntosh agreed that commercial space may not be viable at the eastern end of Columbia Street. “It is going to be a commercial orphan,” she said. “It would have to be the type of commercial that would be highly used by the people living in it.” Lisa Spitale, the city’s director of development services, said empty commercial space can be detrimental to the street. She said the commercial space being contemplated at the site is very neighbourhood-oriented, such as a coffee house, that could contribute to the open space that will exist along Elliott Street. The application is currently being circulated to city departments, and Ballenas is working on completing its development plans. The neighbourhood will be consulted and city advisory committees will review the proposal before council considers the proposal.

Chris and Felicity Rudolph see the results of their hard work on a daily basis. In 2008, the couple bought a dilapidated house at 506 10th St. and moved it to 500 Fourth Ave., after receiving city council’s approval to subdivide their lot, locate the house at the rear of their home and restore the relocated house. “It was in awful shape,” said Julie Schueck, the city’s heritage planner. “It’s amazing to me – not many people would look at that house and say, ‘That could be something.’ It was a huge transformation.” The couple’s original plan had been to build a garage or coach house in the back yard of their home at 340 Fifth St. for relatives. “We drove by the house and put two and two together,” Chris said. “We have always had a soft spot for these old houses.” Chris said the 1902 house has seen a “big change” since the restoration got underway.

While he appreciates that people like the work that’s been done on the house, Chris believes it’s important that people working in the field, such as project architect Eric Pattison and contractor Basil Restoration, are recognized for their efforts in these type of projects. The Boiler House at Victoria Hill also received an award of honour from Heritage B.C. “The Boiler House and Howay Cottage each went up against provincewide competition of all types and sizes of heritage projects,” Schueck said. “There were probably two dozen winners overall. We batted two for two. It speaks to the quality of our heritage program.” The Boiler House, constructed in 1930, was one of five buildings on the former Woodlands site that was identified for consideration.
“The original intention of the Boiler House was to provide a reliable source of heat to all buildings on the (Woodlands) site, using what was then an advanced technology,” said a heritage statement from the city. “Today it is an amenity space with a fitness room and a variety of purposebuilt rooms that can accommodate everything from quiet studying to animated billiards games.” The heritage overview states that the Boiler House has been rehabilitated into a pleasant and functional place that honours the past and looks to the future. The City of New Westminster recently recognized several heritage projects at a recent city council meeting. The owners of the 1932 David and Margaret Simpson House at 501 Seventh Ave. received a painting of their home done by local artist Angela Au Hemphill. The house received the Heritage Shield for outstanding exterior heritage restoration at the 2008 Royal City Builders Awards.

Lacrosse fans want hall in civic centre

Members of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame want the city to elevate their museum to a place of prominence that it deserves. The Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, now located in Centennial Community Centre, includes trophies, jerseys, old equipment and photos. Lacrosse is considered Canada’s national summer sport and originated with the First Nations. Chuck Puchmayr, a director of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, recently told city council that the hall of fame wants to work with the City of New Westminster on opportunities to be included in the future multiuse civic facilities in downtown New Westminster. He believes there are potential synergies to be gained from having the hall of fame in a building that could also potentially house the police and military museums. Puchmayr said the New Westminster Salmonbellies have won the Mann Cup a record 24 times, so it’s only natural that the hall of fame be located in the oldest city west of the Great Lakes. He said it needs and deserves to be located in a prominent location that is easily accessible for visitors.
Governors of the hall of fame are contemplating how to create an interactive and fun place for the people of all ages. That could include a place where children could shoot a lacrosse ball and have their speed measured and recorded for comparison at future visits to the hall of fame. “Museums people will go to once or twice,” Puchmayr said. “An interactive museum, people will attend more often. … We want to contribute to an active downtown, a vibrant downtown. We think by having the hall of fame active, it will do that.” Puchmayr said the hall of fame is also considering ways to bring the collection to schools by taking some of the smaller and interesting displays to children to get them excited about visiting the facility. A museum is one of the uses planned for the future multi-use civic facility. The city is interested in bringing the collections of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the military and police museums together in one building. “I think it needs much more prominence,” said Coun. Lorrie Williams of the lacrosse hall of fame. “Certainly our city is known for its lacrosse.” Coun. Jonathan Cote said he’s visited the attraction a couple of times, but it isn’t easily accessible to the public. He believes it would be a huge benefit for the city to have the

Puchmayr said the hall of fame currently occupies about 1,200 square feet in Centennial Community Centre, but a lot of its collection is in storage because of space limitations. “Certainly what we have now is really not appropriate,” he
said. Representatives of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame have had discussions with city staff but wanted council to know they’re interested in sharing their ideas. “We need to know what your requirements are, whether they will fit,” said Coun. Betty
McIntosh. “I am sure some of it will fit.” In 2007, the City of New Westminster negotiated a fourparty development assistance compensation agreement concerning casino funds. The fund includes $35 million for a multiuse facility to be built between 2009 and 2013.

But the business lobby countered with a court-based assault, claiming
Fight HST didn’t have legal grounds to present the petition, and the provincial Liberals have maintained the petition has no teeth, in any case. And now Vander Zalm and Fight HST are countering with a B.C. Supreme Court thrust of their own, claiming that the whole HST is unconstitutional, and that’s not to mention their goal to start recalling 24 Liberal MLAs around the province. So perhaps the HST is a fact of life. But facts of life can indeed be elusive.
When friends become enemies IN THE HOUSE

he B.C. Liberals may learn the hard way that an old adage is true: Sometimes your best friends can become your worst enemies. I’m referring to the move by business groups to launch legal action against the initiative aspect of the anti-HST petition on the grounds that the legislation it purports to send to the legislature is unconstitutional. Their arguments may very well be accepted by a judge. Former B.C. Liberal attorney general Geoff Plant (a noted lawyer himself) recently wrote a detailed critique in The Vancouver Sun of the proposed initiative that seemed to demolish – on legal grounds – the idea that the petition’s proposed law could stand up in court. Plant argues the province lacks jurisdiction to arbitrarily scrap the HST because it is a federal tax, not a provincial one. Bill Vander Zalm hasn’t really responded to Plant’s arguments, but he and his supporters have launched their own court action, arguing the HST itself is constitutionally invalid. While Vander Zalm had a

poor track record on constitutional matters when he was premier, he has impressively hired noted lawyer Joe Arvay as his counsel on this matter. Of course, there is an ironic aspect to Vander Zalm’s own court action: It may very well ensure the future of the HST will remain cloudy for months, perhaps even years. If the B.C. Supreme Court gets involved, it may take a long time for the case to be heard, and then there’s the matter of appeals (this would likely go all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada). How likely is it, then, for the provincial government to do anything – legislate an end to the HST, or send it to a provincewide referendum – while the matter is before the courts? I would suggest not very likely at all. But back to the business community’s legal challenge. If a judge does indeed side with the business groups, he or she will only inflame an already hot electorate. A legal dismissal of the petition would look like an arrogant slap-down of the more than 700,000 people who signed the anti-HST petition. And it won’t be the presiding judge who will incur the public wrath. Rather, it will be the business community and, by logical extension, the B.C. Liberal government. Even before it swept into power in 2001, the B.C. Liberal party had very strong,

High school project lagging

May I suggest a committee of Nobel Prize winners be assembled to solve the most vexing question of our time, specifically what in world is taking the City of New Westminster and the trustees of School District 40 so long to announce that the high school construction will start on an announced date. We have a new park announced, civic centre, heck even new roads and sidewalks here in the hinterland of Sapperton, soon to be known as the Brewery District, but still no news about our new high school. I know negotiations are supposed to be done behind closed doors, but is anybody even in the same room together? Both sides: admit defeat, suck up your losses and get on with it! We, the parents and taxpayers of New Westminster, are thoroughly fed up with this inaction by all parties
concerned, more money is disappearing into the monstrous sink hole of studies, consultants and media spin doctors, enough already. I have watched parents pull together to build playgrounds and as others build a football program in less time than this fiasco has taken, get with it and get this project going, or get out of the way and let us do it. We as parents couldn’t do any worse than what we have watched for darn near a decade. Patrick Harris, New Westminster

a small run-of-river power project in a wilderness area and assuming that it’s typical of such facilities. Alas, Mr. Taylor, it is not. Among the hundreds of run-of-river schemes now competing for a share of power consumers’ money there will be some small, inconspicuous ones. But also in the works are some enormous ones that threaten to change the face of B.C. One of these is a 39-phase development in the Bute Inlet-Toba Valley region, about 150 kilometres north of Powell River, launched by Plutonic Power and General Electric on a projected construction budget of $4 billion. If completed, this huge, multinational undertaking could supply (expensive) power to some 375,000 homes. Even in these times of great bundles of cash routinely changing hands, $4 billion is a lot of money, and the people of B.C. would eventually be manoeuvred into covering the costs and putting up the profits. I don’t think any of the many miles of transmission lines, diversion tunnels, penstocks, turbines and roadways would “blend into the scenery leaving barely a scratch.” Instead, it seems that there are few watersheds in the southern half of the province that are safe from exploitation by a new army of profiteers.
City staff earn too much

Re: More city staff hit the $100,000 mark, The Record, July 3 I’m outraged to read more city staff hit the $100,000 mark. In the last 18 months, many jurisdictions have been looking at ways to cut costs while New Westminster is eager to increase them. From 38 to 72 city employees now in that special “$100,000 club.” What are we thinking in New Westminster? Where does this insanity stop? Frankly I’m tired of the argument that you have to pay to get good people. I don’t feel that New Westminster gets its money worth. More and more companies continue to do more with less, as do many governments and government agencies, while we dole it out hand over fist. Hey, come work for New West where the “livin’ is easy.” I’m not out to attack individuals for their earnings but to bring attention to the lack of fiscal control for something as simple as wages and benefits that you and I pay for again and again, every day. For this we pay overpriced senior administrators to tell us that we can expect to pay more and more in the future, including retroactive pay. Where is the control over our tax dollars? I guess the tail really does wag the dog in New West.

obvious ties to the province’s business community. And since then, those ties have become entrenched in the public’s mind. The fact that companies contribute vast sums of money to the B.C. Liberals is not surprising and not a new development. However, it is the party’s avowed pro-business policies that make it hard for many people to distinguish where the interests of the business community end and where the interests of the B.C. Liberal government begin. Whether it’s chopping corporate tax rates, weakening employment standards, subsidizing a private power industry, easing regulations for resource companies or stubbornly refusing to raise the minimum wage
(which now lags behind the one in Newfoundland, of all places), the B.C. Liberal government has made it clear where it hangs its ideological hat. So if the business groups – the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, the Council of Forest Industries and the Coast Forest Products Association, among others – succeed in swatting the initiative down, the general public will view the result as a poorly masked manoeuvre by the B.C. Liberals. The last thing the government should wish for right now is something to further enhance the chances of a successful recall against its MLAs. But a successful court action by the business community could very well do just that. If the business groups were truly concerned
about the anti-HST petition going forward, they should have launched their legal challenge at the beginning of the petition process, not at the end of it. At the very least, the business community should have mounted its own counter-campaign against Vander Zalm if it was genuinely concerned the HST was better for the economy than not. As much as the B.C. Liberals fumbled their handling of the HST, so too has the business community bumbled along in its own dealings with the red-hot political issue. The Kraft Celebration Tour allows for multiple voting during the 24-hour voting period. “I’ll be asking everyone I know to vote for New Westminster on July 23,” Wright said. “It’s something I’ve never said before, but I’m happy to say it now: Vote early and vote often.” Kraft will celebrate in each of the winning communities with a free community celebration in August. “They will be doing 10 across the country,” McFadyen said. “I think we have an excellent chance.” McFadyen believes the youth centre is a worthy project for residents to rally behind. “This is the one that stuck out. I am so impressed. We attached the youth centre to Century House. I think that is very unique, if not the first time in Canada,” he said about locating a seniors’ and youth facility together. “I thought it would be great to assist the campaign. Speculation is mounting that good news is coming regarding a new high school in New Westminster. A delegation from New Westminster visited Victoria Tuesday to hammer out a deal that could lead to construction of a new high school. Mayor Wayne Wright and city administrator Paul Daminato joined school district representatives in a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Education. “It’s to do with the school issue,” Blair Fryer, the city’s manager of communications, said when asked about the meeting. “We hope to have something to announce very shortly, as soon as next week.” Neither school board chair James Janzen nor Wright could be reached for comment. “I look forward to the day it’s done,” said Paul Johansen, chair of the district parent advisory council. “A lot of parents look forward to the day it’s done.” Once the deal is sealed, the city stands to gain three new schools. The former Saint Mary’s Hospital land will house John Robson Elementary, while the John Robson site will be home to a new middle school. Those projects can’t get underway until a decision is made about where the new high school will be located, a decision that’s been complicated by the presence of an old cemetery on the New Westminster Secondary School site.

New bridge helps out greenway cyclists Still Creek crossing made easier for travellers using Central Valley Greenway

Life for bicycle commuters along the Central Valley Greenway, a 24-kilometre bike path linking New Westminster, Burnaby and Vancouver, recently became a bit easier. Although Still Creek waters don’t run deep, getting around the Burnaby Lake tributary near Gilmore Station used to be a considerable hassle for cyclists, who previously were forced to either navigate a steep and awkward pedestrian bridge or take their chances in traffic to get around it. Not anymore. The new bridge is very discreet, and many cyclists, unless they remember the old way of crossing the creek, won’t even notice they are on a bridge at all. “The first time I rode the CVG, I completely blew past it,” admitted Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition spokesperson Talia Fanning. “This one is flat rather than arched, so bike access is much, much better.” Although a new bridge over the modest creek has been in place for a couple months now, its grand debut, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with scissors wielded by Mayor Derek Corrigan, took place June 12. The cycling coalition also turned the event into a bit of a party, complete with a barbecue and live music from the ever-

been using sections of it the entire time. “Part of the reason it was officially opened last year was because the Winston overpass was completed, but now it is even better,” said Fanning. “It’s great that, even though it was
officially opened a year ago, Burnaby has continued to improve upon what was opened and has been really supportive of the idea of, once it is finished, that you never stop going back and continuing to work on it.”

A traffic calming plan has been approved for the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood. During a consultation about traffic in the Brow of the Hill area, residents expressed concern about too much traffic, speeding, traffic noise, inefficient arterial and collector roads, cars parking too close to intersections and crosswalks, and crosswalk concerns, such as drivers not yielding and poorly lit crossings. Residents also requested stop signs for 13th Street. A staff report notes that surveys were mailed to 8,400 Brow of the Hill residents and more than 320 responses were received. Engineering staff are forwarding results about enforcement of traffic and/or parking-related issues to the city departments that deal with those matters. “There was a series of safety issues that people brought forward about four-way stops,” said Coun. The contest is part of the debut of “Post Script,” a River Market arts program that hopes to stimulate creativity in the Royal City through “inviting friends and neighbours to converse in playful ways.” “I think it’s a really fun thing,” said Tenth to the Fraser blogger Briana Tomkinson. “It should get people to just stop and appreciate summer and get a little bit of culture. Green cones will be doled out to members of the city’s environmental advisory committee, the business community, residents associations, council members and a Zero Waste community pilot project. The green cones provide an environmentally friendly way of disposing of all types of household waste, such as items that can be composted. he New Westminster Service Canada Centre for Youth is hosting its summer opportunities fair on Thursday, July 8. The fair focuses on helping youth find volunteer experiences by providing volunteer and networking opportunities for youth and volunteer organizations. “The summer opportunities fair helps youth find volunteer opportunities in their community,” said Katerina Marta, youth services officer. “Many of the skills gained through volunteer experience are transferable and recognized by employers as relevant and valuable.” The fair will take place on Thursday, July 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Cameron Complex at 9523 Cameron St. in Burnaby, just behind Lougheed Town Centre. Student chops locks for charity

Hair today, gone tomorrow. This was a lesson learned last week by 14-year-old William Sandwith, who had 11 inches of his copper-topped mop cut off and donated to Angel Hair for Children, a charity that provides real hair wigs for children who have lost their hair due to medical treatment or health conditions. He also managed at the same time to raise
a fair chunk of change for yet another charity that builds schools in Africa. “We raised $522 for Free the Children, one of the programs I work with,” said William of the hair-cutting ceremony that took place recently at Glenbrook Middle School. The teen became motivated to grow his hair after being inspired by another student who did something similar. “A boy at our school named Russ about two years ago, when I was in Grade 6, he shaved his head and donated the hair, so
I thought that was a really cool thing,” he said. “I have been growing my hair since, except for the occasional cutting of the dead ends.” Sandwith is pleased with his shorter ’do, which should make his summer that much cooler. “It’s pretty darn good, I would say,” said the teen of his new pageboy look. Sandwith said he plans on growing his hair out again and “harvesting” it again in a couple of years.

Fraserside is urging lowincome families to take advantage of its annual Camping Bureau. Diane Cairns, Fraserside’s director, said families on low incomes can get financial assistance for recreational programs year-round. According to Cairns, lowincome families registering for programs through the City of
New Westminster’s Active Living Guide can get a 50 per cent discount from parks, culture and recreation. They can then apply to the Camping Bureau for assistance with the remaining portion of the cost of recreation programs. “We can help you with that remaining cost,” she said. “We get the parent to pay something. If it is totally free, it seems the value is lost. You could get 75 per cent of the entire cost.”
In addition, Fraserside’s Camping Bureau also helps families attend summer camp, whether it’s a half-day soccer camp or a two-week long wilderness camp. “If you register through our Camping Bureau, the camp gives them a reduced rate,” she said. Cairns said that applies to summer camps offered by the city or any other camp. “It is reasonable to say it is common to only pay 25 per of any camping program,” she said.
According to Cairns, the Camping Bureau usually registers 140 to 150 kids for camps during the summer. Fraserside has almost reached that number for the summer of 2010, but because of generous donations from the Vancouver Foundation, City of New Westminster, RBC and CKNW, it still has some funds left to support the requests. “We have money. I want people to come and use it,” Cairns said. “I think we are at 130. … I
want to increase the number of registrations we do.” Cairns said the Camping Bureau’s mandate is that no child wanting to go to camp will be prevented from doing so because of financial reasons. “We do everything we can to make it happen,” she said. Starting the weekend off is Music in the Square at Hyack Square with the amazing talents of The Mojo Stars and the Latin Dance of Rumba with Mike Plawutski from Dance with Me Studios on Friday, July 9th from 6pm to 9pm. nce again, Columbia Street will be playing host to the 11th Annual Show and Shine. Classic cars, hot rods and motorcycles will be lining the streets Sunday, July 11th for your viewing pleasure. What could be a better prelude to the Show and Shine than an old-fashioned drive-in movie? Classic cars and drive-in movies are a quintessential pairing. However, do not worry if you do not own a classic car, you are welcome to bring the vehicle or lawn chair of your choice. Last year’s Drive-in movie was such a hit that it was voted Best New Event in New Westminster by Newsleader. The heroic quest for colour and imagination is the primary story in this year’s Burnaby Summer Theatre production, Chroma. Chroma, a world of colour, is under attack by The Shade, who consumes all the colours and keeps them in his well of darkness. Superheroes Dasos and Neela must free the colours and learn something important in the process. The play was created in the same manner as the comedy TV show Curb Your Enthusiasm, according to director Shawn Sorensen, with a synopsis written and the performers creating each scene on their feet using improvisational techniques. The small cast – all students of Langara College’s Studio 58 theatre program – has created a piece that deals with classic themes such as good versus evil, as well as gender discrepancies and violence in classic superhero story lines. When working in child care, Sorensen noticed that superhero play was discouraged because violence was unacceptable in that setting, but many of his friends at Studio 58 discussed the superheroes of their childhood with enthusiasm. So he decided to create a play that
would allow children to connect with superheroes without the gratuitous violence, he says. “We took a respectful approach,” Sorensen says. “I wanted to bring superhero play back in a way that was controlled, safe and silly.” To that end, any mild violence in the piece is more Three Stooges than Batman. The cast specifically decided against hits to the face and went with comedic fighting scenarios instead. “I wanted it to be edge-of-your-seat exciting,” Sorensen explained, adding he wanted the performance to be safe for young children while pushing boundaries around the taboo of superhero violence. “I’m attracted to people (in the industry) who challenge the art form,” he says. The fight scenes utilize the choreography experience of leading man Dustin Freeland, who plays Dasos, one of two superheroes battling The Shade, played by Alex Rose, to return colour to the world of Chroma. The Burnaby Summer Theatre troupe will be touring the Lower Mainland from July 7 to Aug. 19, with shows at day camps, community centres, parks and more. The troupe will perform at New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave., on July 20 at 10:30 a.m.

The New Westminster Salmonbellies moved into top spot in the Western Lacrosse Association with back-to-back wins in overtime last week. The senior A ’Bellies got past the Coquitlam Adanacs 11-9 in OT at Queen’s Park Arena, their second straight win over the A’s in extra time in less than a week. New Westminster then eked out a 9-8 decision in Nanaimo against the Timbermen on July 3. Sean Robinson got the game-winner at home with his hat-trick tally at the sixminute mark of the 10-minute overtime. Rookie Corbyn Tao set up the big left-hander with his fifth assist of the contest. Jamie Floris sealed the club’s ninth win and fifth in overtime with a late goal. In Nanaimo, Jordan Hall got the only goal of extra time, potting his second tally of the night early in OT from Craig Conn and Floris. Floris, who was named the game’s first star, tied the match with just two minutes remaining with his hat-trick tally to send the game into overtime. The win moved New Westminster into a first-
place tie with the Victoria Shamrocks. Both teams have 18 points. “Every team wants to beat us and our players will be better for it,” said New Westminster head coach Bob Salt. While Salt recognizes the ’Bellie offence has been less productive than last season, he likes the way the team has responded in tight matches. “Our team has played with really good composure in the last five minutes of the games,” Salt said. “Parity has hit the league. … It’s great. I love it and my players love it.” At Queen’s Park, New Westminster allowed Coquitlam a 6-4 advantage heading into the final period before first-star Conn, with back-to-back goals, and Robinson took back the lead. Matt Roik made 41 saves for the win in goal, while Coquitlam’s Nick Rose stopped 52 shots at the other end of the floor. In Nanaimo, Tyler Richards backstopped the win with 44 saves in a closely played game. Shasta tumblers win two of three gold in Japan Shasta Trampoline Club’s Chelsea Nerpio delivered the goods at the 2010 Indo Pacific trampoline championships in Kakegawa, Japan last week. The 17-year-old went into the Pac Rim competition as a medal favourite and came away with a win on the double-mini trampoline and a fourth-place finish on conventional trampoline. Nerpio helped the Canadian team win a silver in the over-17 team doublemini event. She also placed eighth in the synchronized trampoline with Shasta teammate Anita Cirillo. “I had a few problems, but overall I’m happy with how things went, especially my last pass,” said Nerpio in a Gymnastics B.C. press release. “Not all my four passes were as clean as I would have liked, but I prepared really well for this event and it paid off with the gold medal.”
Ben Blais of Shasta also picked up a gold on double-mini in the boys’ 10-12 age group. Blais was strong on other apparatus as well, placing sixth on the trampoline and fifth on synchro. Cameron Quinlan was fourth on trampoline, fifth on synchro and sixth on double-mini in the boys’ 13-14 division. In the girls’ 15-16 group, Shannon Commeault was fifth on double-mini, sixth on synchro and eighth on trampoline. Poppy Quinlan shared sixth place with Commeault on synchro. She finished up ninth on trampoline and 11th overall on the doublemini. All 11 athletes on the B.C. team qualified for at least one final at the competition that included teams from Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Africa. both teams on Sunday. The move by Burnaby suggested there will be no such repeat of the fireworks that ocurred in the playoff meetings between the Lakers and the Adanacs over the past two seasons. In 2008, Burnaby knocked out regular season champion Coquitlam in the semifinals in straight games. Last year, the Lakers took the A’s to a thrilling fifth and final game before bowing out in the second round of the playoffs. “The biggest disappointment for me is we didn’t go after what we needed to go after,” said Burnaby head coach Mike Kuppan. “Bilic is a big loss. New Westminster ’s Justin Morneau will make his first-ever start at first base for the American League at the Major League Baseball all-star game on July 13. It is also the first time two Minnesota Twins teammates have started the all-star game together since Harmon Killebrew and Rod Carew in 1968. Twins catcher Joe Mauer and Morneau will be among the starters against the National League at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California next Tuesday. Morneau garnered close to three million votes to beat Miguel Cabrera of Detroit and the New York Yankees Mark Teixeira in the tightest balloting for an AL position. It is Morneau’s fourth straight trip to the midsummer showcase. “We’ve been close in the past and obviously either way you’re happy to go, but to get voted in by the fans is special,” said Morneau in a Twins press release.

Louis Bernard Nofield January 25, 1920 - July 1, 2010
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing away of Louis at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. Louis was born in Saskatchewan and leaves behind his loving wife, Maria, and many admiring nieces, nephews, grandchildren, stepsons and friends. Before his passing, Louis mentioned that his eleven years with Maria were, without a doubt, the happiest years of his life. Louis epitomised the following: successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of children, who leaves the world better than they found it, who has never lacked appreciation for the earth’s beauty, and who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves. He will never be forgotten and always occupy a very special place in our hearts. Prayers will be offered at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday July 7th, at Columbia Bowell Chapel, 219 6th Street, New Westminster. Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 (Noon) on Thursday, July 8th at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 330 Royal Ave, New Westminster.
