She has a master’s degree in political science, but Kamaljeet Munday just graduated from high school. Munday’s degree – from a university in India – isn’t valid in Canada, so when the 30-year-old stepped off the plane five years ago, unable to speak English, she was, quite literally, starting from scratch. “My degree is a piece of paper here,” says Munday. She came to Canada in 2005, to be with her husband. When the initial culture shock began to subside, she started looking for ways to learn the language. The search took her to the Burnaby Public Library, where she attended English classes. Through that, she discovered New Westminster’s Pearson Adult Learning Centre. “I don’t want to just improve my English, I want to get an education,” says Munday. “In the beginning, when I took an English test, the teacher told me (I was at) a Grade 7 level. I was shocked because I had a master’s degree.” But Munday stayed on and improved, and on Thursday she, along with 32 students in the program, received her Dogwood – the name of British Columbia’s graduation diploma – certificate. A local social activist is calling on city hall to implement a tree bylaw and to uphold legislation that protects wildlife habitat. Roslyn Cassells is concerned that shrubs recently removed from a downtown site were home to nesting songbirds. The school district had the shrubs removed from the former Saint Mary’s Hospital site so it was able to comply with the city’s unsightly premises and street traffic bylaws and to respond to complaints about rats at the site. In response to Cassells’ complaints, maintenance work on the future school site ceased. A school district representative apologized to her on several occasions. “It’s not me that got hurt. It’s the animals that suffer. I can’t accept an apology on their behalf,” said Cassells, who believes justice is the best apology. “They can stop killing them, leave their habitat alone. After all the destruction they should provide a nature-positive place. I am hoping to work with them on that.” Cassells also raised concerns about a downtown ◗Habitat Page 10 est. 1946

No charges laid in fatal accident

Seniors’ homes get more funding

Investigators are still looking into the accident that claimed the life of 11-year-old boy

Two New Westminster care homes are getting additional funding from Fraser Health after rate adjustments were made in January. The health authority is providing an additional $12 million in funding this year for 43 facilities throughout the region. Fraser Health is slated to provide $8 million in additional funding next year, as well. “The target is to increase direct care,” said Ray Thorpe, spokesperson for Fraser Health. He added the funding is also intended to standardize care throughout the region. According to Thorpe, two seniors’ facilities in New Westminster will receive additional funding this year. Kiwanis Care Centre has 75 funded beds and is getting an additional $506,756, and Royal City Manor has 50 funded beds and is getting an additional $399,147 under the newly structured rates. The extra funding was made possible through a rate adjustment last January. “When the new and more equitable rate structure was introduced earlier this year, we committed that the increased revenue would be used to improve direct care for our seniors,” said Health Services Minister Kevin Falcon in a press release. The funding is intended to increase direct care hours from an average of 2.46 hours per day per resident to 2.79 hours throughout Fraser Health’s region, from Burnaby to Mission. Direct care hours do not include meals, laundry or housekeeping. New staffing standards have also been introduced. “New standards for staffing and increased accountability for all providers will ensure that seniors in residential care receive the same level of quality complex care at every facility in Fraser Health’s region-wide network of care,” said Barbara Korabek, Fraser Health’s vice president of clinical operations. Remembering Christian: A memorial at Sixth Avenue and McBride Boulevard marked the scene of the accident that claimed the life of Christian Mesa.

It has been over two weeks since a flat-bed truck struck and killed 11-year-old Christian Mesa on his way to school, and no charges have yet been brought forward against the driver involved in the accident. The sixth-grader at École Glenbrooke Middle School was riding his bike when he was struck near the intersection of Sixth Avenue and McBride Boulevard around 8 a.m. June 8. Christian, the only son of parents Rita and Joe Mesa, died a few hours later in Royal Columbian Hospital. “The lead investigator as well as the collision analyst continue to work on it,” said Sgt. Gary Weishaar of the New Westminster Police Service. Weishaar said there is no reason to suspect drugs or alcohol played any role in the fatal accident. “The driver was spoken to at the scene. I spoke to the police officer that had to later go back to the driver’s residence to advise him when the boy died, and he said there was just a full collapse of his emotions,” he said. “There were a lot of victims from that day, not the least of course is Christian and Christian’s family. It’s just terrible, I can’t describe it in words.”

Two city councillors are hopeful that the city will be able to capture one of Canada’s most recognized images in public art. Councillors Bill Harper and Lorrie Williams put forward a motion asking staff to report back to council on the feasibility of building a statue or some sort of public art that represents the picture Wait for Me, Daddy. The photo was taken on Oct. 1, 1940 by Province photographer Claud Detloff, who was photographing soldiers marching down Eighth Street to a waiting train.

According to Harper, the photo has been deemed to be the second-most-recognized picture in Canadian history, behind The Last Spike. In the photo, a five-year-old boy named Warren Bernard can be seen reaching out to his father, Jack, who is among the soldiers marching down Eighth Street in New Westminster. “It is this incredibly emotional picture,” Harper said. “That picture represents New Westminster. People see that picture and don’t recognize where that is.” Harper said the image is important to New Westminster and should be brought to life in some sort of public art. He said its ideal location would be in or around the future civic centre, which will be built in the vicinity of where the Wait for Me, Daddy photograph was taken many years ago.

Thinking outside the blue box

Once a week, New Westminster residents haul blue boxes filled with plastic bottles, glass containers and tin cans out the curb. And once a week, they cart yellow and blue bags full of newspaper and cardboard out as well. But what about electronics, fluorescent light bulbs and batteries, which are not picked up for recycling by the city? There are options for getting rid of these items safely. The provincial government introduced an electronics recycling program in August 2007. Depots accept desktop computers, printers, monitors, televisions, computer spare parts and laptop computers. Residents and businesses can drop off electronic equipment without charge at the Salvation Army thrift shop at 774 Columbia St. from Monday to Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., on Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The provincial take-back program – officially known as product stewardship under the environmental protection division – includes tires, pharmaceuticals, car and rechargeable batteries, and used oil, as well as electronics at depots throughout the Lower Mainland. New Westminster’s recycling depot at Sixth Avenue and McBride Boulevard is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and accepts many of the items listed by the product stewardship program. These include used motor oil and filters,

car batteries and household batteries. The depot also takes hot water tanks, microwaves, barbecues, refrigerators, empty propane tanks and other appliances, as well as paint. B.C. Hydro will pick up and recycle fridges that are 10 to 24 cubic feet and still in working condition. Hydro also pays $30 at the time of pickup. Businesses in New Westminster and throughout the Lower Mainland act as recycling depots for a wide array of products. London Drugs’ green deal recycling program accepts cellphones, PDAs, rechargeable batteries, alkaline batteries, disposable cameras, ink jet cartridges, laser cartridges, metal film canisters, electronic goods, small appliances that have been purchased at London Drugs, compact fluorescent bulbs and fluorescent light tubes. London Drugs also accepts packaging from products bought in the store. As long as you have the receipt, you can bring cardboard, plastic, plastic wrap and even Styrofoam back to the customer service counter at the London Drugs at Westminster Centre, at 555 Sixth St. Best Buy at Queensborough Landing, at 805 Boyd St., accepts MP3 players, cellphones, portable DVD players, portable CD players, batteries, ink cartridges, CDs, DVDs and gift cards for recycling. Look for the Greentec drop-off bin at Best Buy stores. The Source by Circuit City at 610 Sixth St. accepts rechargeable batteries and cellphones. The owners of a Surrey-based demolition company are facing numerous charges after allegedly dumping asbestos-filled drywall at a New Westminster recycling depot. Kelbeir Singh Sall and Bhupinder Singh Dhillon of Speedy Excavating were charged earlier this month with nine offences under the Environmental Management Act for illegally transporting and disposing hazardous waste. Asbestos can cause serious health problems, including cancer, when the fibres become airborne and are breathed in to people’s lungs. Drywall (also known as gypsum or Gyproc) is banned from landfills, and the law requires it to be separated for recycling. According to Jack Trudgin, the B.C. conservation officer who investigated the case, it is the first time in the province’s

history that a company has been charged for illegally disposing asbesdos-laden drywall, although he suspects the practice is dangerously widespread. It costs around $100 per metric tonne to have drywall hauled away. “This is the first case where we believe we have enough evidence to support charges,” said Trudgin. He alleges that Speedy Excavating was illegally disposing of drywall rather than spending thousands of dollars to ship the materials to Alberta, the closest place that recycles asbestos safely. Kristian Davis, New Westminster’s supervisor of solid waste and recycling, said his department was unaware of the alleged incident, which court documents say occurred in December 2008, and that investigators hadn’t contacted his department. The two men are scheduled to appear in Surrey Provincial Court on July 9. – with files from the Vancouver Sun

My husband and I have separated. We have two children aged 12 and 9. My husband agrees to pay child support but believes that after the government mandated amount, that is all he has to pay me regarding the children. We don’t want to be a drag on graduation celebrations. Quite the contrary, we’d like to see every last grad make it

That’s why we applaud any and all students who work towards dry grads and safe celebrations. By all means celebrate – graduation is an important milestone along the road through life. But there are many more and possibly greater milestones ahead for those who have the sense to temper their celebrations with a bit of responsibility.

Pick a reason to oppose HST

By taking a deceitful, dictatorial approach to the HST, the B.C. government ensured that the debate about the HST became: In a democracy, who has the final say on government policy? Because we have the Recall and Initiative Act, people have a chance to hold the government accountable before another election. This is a tremendous tool, because it’s been the game of all governments to play “bait and switch” with voters early in their mandates, in the hope of manipulating the people at election time to get re-elected. If we succeed with the petition to repeal the HST, that game will end in B.C., forever. Now, Premier Gordon Campbell wants to travel B.C. this summer to try to change that debate to the so-called “merits” of the HST. But here again, the

Liberal attempt to control people’s thoughts regarding their Hated Sales Tax will fail. The HST is not only bad politics, but it is bad policy, and harmful to British Columbians for many reasons: 1. It’s a cruel tax that will hurt low-income, fixedincome, working families and seniors the most. 2. It will kill jobs and damage business and economic activity as people curb consumption to make up for the extra cost. 3. It eliminates the fees paid to businesses to collect PST. HST must be collected for free. 4. It will drive up inflation as people demand higher wages to pay the extra seven per cent cost, offsetting any benefits to businesses from the input tax credits. 5. It will push the economy underground. In the U.K., VAT (HST) evasion is over $20 billion per year.

6. It will make B.C. less competitive with Alberta, Washington, Oregon and Asia, where there is no HST. 7. It will cost more to administer. Ottawa is hiring all of B.C.’s 1,200 provincial tax collectors, yet the only thing that will change is instead of calculating the GST at five per cent, they will calculate the HST at 12 per cent. 8. The federal government will take billions from B.C. in additional taxes for goods previously considered a “writeoff” under PST, which will now become taxable under HST. 9. The HST is more complex. The HST agreement has 16 pages of calculus formu-

las outlining the revenue sharing with B.C. that will require math geniuses or computers (or both) to figure out. 10. It will destroy B.C.’s sovereignty over provincial taxation. Ottawa will now set the rates, determine our exemptions, and will calculate and distribute the revenues to B.C. There isn’t anything in this world that can’t be improved, including our tax system. But the government needs to cancel the HST right now, take a sober second look at it and invite all British Columbians to participate in the debate, and then try again. Education: Big changes coming? ◗ continued from page 6

government (most notably Vancouver school trustees themselves) have dismissed the report as a meaningless exercise that revealed nothing new. But those who view that report only as it pertains to school trustees may be missing the larger picture. Comptroller-general Cheryl Wenezenki-Yolland portrays the Vancouver school board as operating within a governance model that is largely controlled by the employees who work for it (i.e. teachers and the Canadian Union of Public Employees support staff workers). As a result, flexibility and the ability to change policies are greatly hampered. While there has been a lot of attention paid to the war of words between Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid and Vancouver School Board chair Patti Bacchus, a key phrase from the minister has been overlooked.

She has talked about the need for a new “governance model” and how she will develop one soon. A new model is going to have a more profound impact on our system than closing a few schools or squabbling over a school board’s budget. So what, exactly, is the B.C. Liberal government up to? Is it about to do an end run around the B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and CUPE by setting up these “new forms of schools” with direct parental involvement? Is it about to take the first steps toward creating a new parallel education system? One clue may be what’s going on England, where the new coalition government is embarking on a massive restructuring of the country’s education system. There, the Swedish model of so-called “free schools” (where parents and organizations set up their own school with gov-

ernment money) is being implemented. Will we see “free schools” set up on a trial basis in a few school districts? It can be argued that the B.C. Liberals, given their very low standing in the polls, do not have the political credibility or muscle to carry out big changes on any front. But they wouldn’t be the first government to go down swinging over an issue it considers important enough. The BCTF will soon enter negotiations for a new contract and it won’t accept a wage freeze like other public sector unions, so a fight is brewing on that front as well. Perhaps that’s the one thing – a contract battle with teachers – that won’t change in education. But it sure seems likely that “21st-century learning” means other changes are on the way. ing to a press release. About 6,000 beds are located in 68 residential care sites funded by Fraser Health but operated privately or by non-profits. Twenty-five residential care facilities in the region did not receive additional funding.

The new care standards also apply to the 13 residential care facilities owned and operated by Fraser Health, representing about 1,700 beds. Five of these sites will adjust their staff mix to introduce licensed practical nurses.

Wireless trial gets underway The City of New Westminster is going live. The city’s small-scale Wi-Fi project is set to get underway by June 28, having been previously approved by the electrical utility commission and city council. “It’s going to be a trial

Cassells contacted police, who asked that additional trees not be cut down until the property owner had talked to staff at city hall. Cassells is concerned that city hall tells people they can do what they want with trees on their own property, even though there are federal and provincial laws in place that protect wildlife. She said one tree was removed from the Merivale Street property, but wildlife enforcement officers told the property owner the trees at the rear of the site couldn’t be cut down at this time because they’re home to migratory birds. Cassells is calling on city hall to implement an immediate moratorium on tree cutting, until a workable and ecological tree bylaw is developed. When the issue of tree bylaws has been raised at city hall in the past, council members have often voiced concerns that people would rush out in advance of its approval and cut down trees. “That is why a moratorium needs to come in immediately,” she said. “While a bylaw is being discussed, they would be cutting down trees.” Cassells is concerned that the city lacks policy and initiatives to protect the ecology and lacks respect for

current and federal laws relating to ecology. She believes the city needs to institute a public education campaign around the importance of ecology and the interconnectedness of life and to implement a tree bylaw that protects heritage trees from being cut down. “This is a really cruel place if you are wildlife in the city,” she said. “I haven’t been able to get any of the public institutions to enforce any of the laws until now.” Julie Shueck, the city’s heritage planner, met with federal wildlife officers after the tree was cut down on Merivale Street. The officers said active nests cannot be disturbed during nesting season, which is from April to August, without permission from Environment Canada. “It’s any tree, anywhere,” Shueck said of the law that applies to public and private property. “It’s the Migratory Bird Convention Act of 1994.” Staff presented council with a memo about the matter and will make information available to staff in various departments so everyone is aware of the legislation. Mayor Wayne Wright said the tree on Merivale Street was removed because it was almost pressing against a home.

“There were no birds in it,” he said. “They went through it.” The City of New Westminster doesn’t have any bylaws protecting trees or heritage trees. When the issue of a tree bylaw has been raised in the past, council members have voiced concerns about private property rights and the possibility that people would try to beat the bylaw by cutting down trees on their property. “I think one will come,” said Coun. Lorrie Williams. “We should consider a tree bylaw in which people could seek advice about cutting down a tree.” Williams hopes a bylaw would prevent people from cutting down trees before thoroughly considering alternatives. She expects council will give direction to staff regarding the development of a tree bylaw. Coun. Jaimie McEvoy said it is incumbent on the city to honour federal legislation. “The request to look into a tree bylaw is very old,” he said. “It’s been flagged that this is something that has been left undone. We are going to have a look at it.” While McEvoy believes there may be some argument in favour of supporting the retention of heritage trees on public property, he’s not sure how he feels about an overall tree protection bylaw.

at the Pearson centre who helped her succeed. “The teachers were so friendly, so nice,” she says. “I started to think positively.” Munday didn’t just find academic support at the centre – she found life-skill training, as well. Her teachers helped her put together her resumé and prepare for her first job interview in Canada. Today, Munday works

at London Drugs, where she recently received a promotion. The adult learning program offers flexible hours, so Munday was able to maintain a job. Patricia Kearney, a teacher at the Pearson Adult Learning Centre, says the program can go from kindergarten to Grade 12. Some students come in with almost no education while others just need a few classes to graduate.

Some may want to upgrade a certain class to help them enter a post-secondary program. Many of the students who graduate with their adult Dogwood pursue post-secondary education, Kearney says. The Pearson Adult Learning Centre is located in a portable on the New Westminster Secondary School grounds. As for Munday, she was so inspired by her teach-

ers that her dream is to become one herself. But her higher education plans are on hold. Her husband is unable to work right now because of a back injury, so Munday is their main supporter until he gets better. A group of New Westminster women who are battling mental illness are finding that yoga brings increased balance to their lives. The women, who are dealing with issues ranging from depression to bipolar disorder, have found that yoga has lessened the symptoms of their illnesses. They consider it another tool to combat mental illness, in addition to cognitive therapy, group therapy and medication. “It makes everything else strong that you are doing,” said Erin. “This complements it all and brings it all together.” In the fall of 2009, the group received funding to begin practising yoga as a form of therapy. That funding covered the program for 16 weeks but has since run out. “My case manager suggested doing yoga,” said Cindy. “I looked at him like he was on crack.” Being an overweight, depressed and sedentary smoker, Cindy said she was skeptical about the benefits of yoga. “I had dismissed it. Physically I didn’t think I could do it. I decided to go for it,” said Cindy, who agreed to attend a 90-minute class. “For me, doing 90 minutes of anything

was a lot. Physically, I was certain I couldn’t do it.” Instead, she’s found something that makes her feel better physically and mentally. “I saw benefits from the very beginning.” When the program’s original funding from Fraser Health ran out, the women formed a yoga committee called Yoga for Mental Health. Its slogan is “Bending our Bodies to Straighten our Minds.” Christina, who suffers from bipolar disorder and fibromyalgia, has also seen physical and mental improvements since starting yoga. “It clears your head. The ups and downs, it levels you out a bit,” she said. “With the body, you are stretched out. There is definitely a reduction in pain. For me it works both ways.” Erin suffers from bipolar disorder and feels the yoga helps bring her into balance. Bipolar disorder is an illness in which people suffer from serious depression followed by periods of extreme highs. “Yoga is a huge help in creating that balance,” she said. “We are doing this so maybe it is helping us stay out of the hospital. We are trying to be less of a drain on the system.”

The Yoga for Mental Health members are doing everything they can to avoid hitting “that low point,” which may include thoughts of suicide. “I’ve seen the toll on my son when I was in the psychiatric ward,” said Sukhi. “I never want to go there again.” Sukhi, who suffers from depression, said she never imagined she’d be able to volunteer at her son’s school, but that’s something she’s now able to do. The yoga group partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association so it could solicit donations (and offer tax receipts) to keep the program running. Funding for the program, which totals about $7,000 a year, runs out in the middle of July. “We started this in October,” Cindy said. “The effects have been phenomenal on many different levels.” Members of the yoga group have found that the twiceweekly, 90-minute yoga sessions have helped them regulate their emotions, find inner strength, gain confidence and provide a community connection that’s made them less isolated. “Mental health is just one part of us,” Vikki said. “It is not all of who we are.” Yoga group members aren’t suffering from a bout of ◗Yoga Page 15

the blues but have acute and chronic symptoms that prevent them from working. They’re doing what they can to be productive citizens and get back to work. Erin said the women don’t want to rely on a little pill and the government to fix them, but want to do something positive for their own care. Some members of the yoga groups participated in the Simon Fraser Rehabilitation and Recovery Learning Exchange, which was attended by mental health workers and clients from all across the Simon Fraser Health Region. While the program has started with a small group of women in New Westminster, they hope to expand to include a men’s group and a newcomers’ group. Erin said yoga complements the treatments

they’re already pursuing in a bid to address their mental health issues. “We are all going to do much better mental healthwise by doing this,” she said. The women say have noticed a decrease in anxiety and an increase in mindfulness – being in the moment as opposed to looking back on the past or to the future – since they started practising yoga. “We get trapped,” Erin explained about mindfulness. “This allows us to be here.” Cindy has lost 20 pounds since she started doing yoga, but the benefits go much further. “The yoga has brought me right into my body on a day-to-day basis,” she said. “Before, I was numb from the neck down.” People with mental illnesses are often told about the importance of breath-

ing for dealing with issues such as anxiety and depression. Yoga forces them to focus on their breathing. “Focusing on breathing makes me stay where I am. If I am focused on this breathing, I can’t focus on anything else,” Vikki said. “It stills my mind.” The women have also found camaraderie that exists in being among others who share their mental health issues “We all get it,” Christina said. “I know if I didn’t have this I would be home doing nothing, not feeling good about myself. I come here and I feel good.” The women also know if they come to class and lay on a mat for 90 minutes, they won’t be judged – because at least they made the effort to come. ecently, 80 of my classmates from Burnaby North came together for a reunion at Anducci’s. Though 80 per cent of the class couldn’t make it, I was impressed by those who did. They filled the restaurant, spilling on to the patio – old classmates reconnecting in an emotional evening. Those who weren’t there didn’t come for a variety of reasons. Some didn’t know about it; some had moved away and couldn’t be tracked down. Some of my friends felt that they had grown up so much since high school that they had no interest in going back. Some felt that

they already kept in touch with everyone with whom they wanted. Some may have had memories they just didn’t want to revisit. Some may have been embarrassed that they no longer looked like their teenaged selves, though none of us did. Those who did come to the reunion had their own reasons. There are always some old friends with whom you just lose touch. There is the morbid curiosity of how the popular kids aged. There is that nasty, schadenfreude hope that your former arch enemies, the mean girls and the bullies, met up with karma. In terms of the decades that have passed since graduation, the short span of five years we went to high school doesn’t seem that significant. Yet it was during a critical time in our lives. As adolescents, our brains, bodies and emotions were changing,

growing and breaking out. As with our families of origin and maybe more so, we can hold rigid caricatures of high school characters, and though they may seem larger than life characters in our minds, in reality they are complex individuals with qualities more grey and coloured than black and white. Well … maybe one guy was larger than life in high school, but in retrospect, he had a bipolar mood disorder. Our memories for those years are also focussed and incomplete. In our minds, we can make minor events bigger than life. Talking to old classmates we discover that we each remember events

a little differently. We remember selectively, sometimes incorrectly. A reunion can allow us to correct the blindspots in our memories of those formative years and our narrowed characterizations of our classmates, and as you’ll see in my next column, while sharing our lives as adults, we can transform the way we see one another – and our own selves. How to help rhubarb thrive BRANCHING OUT ANNE MARRISON

Question: I have a rhubarb patch in a raised bed. I started out with three plants, and they kept multiplying. Now I have a dozen, but they are very spindly. What can I do? Joan Coffey, by e-mail Answer: Your rhubarb plants are overcrowded and possibly under-nourished. They need digging up and dividing. It’s a job for a sharp spade and good muscles because rhubarb has enormous, deep roots. You may have to slice through to divide them. An axe can help if the spade isn’t sharp enough. There are always deeper bits of root that won’t come up. That’s normal. The divisions for replant-

ing should be cleaned up of any old brown bits left over from previous harvestings. It would be best to renovate the bed by digging in composted manure before replanting. A yearly top-dressing of more composted manure will keep up the nutrition level. This can be done either in spring, when harvesting is over, or in fall or winter when rhubarb has gone dormant for the year.

Question: We did a yard reno last fall and dug up many tulips, which I planted in pots. They bloomed this spring and have now died back in the pots. I plan to put them back in the ground. Will it be OK to leave them in pots until the fall and then plant them? Or should I dig them up and keep them in my garage until fall? Or is there another alternative? Bev Pearson, Coquitlam Answer: Storing your tulips in pots is fine, but they must be in a very, very dry

place. The old-time gardeners routinely dug up tulips after flowering, stored them in a sheltered spot until the leaves finished dying down then stored them under cover. They replanted them in fall and, I suspect, did most of the fertilizing then. But I do think you should dig your tulips out of the pots when the leaves have died down, then take a good look at them before returning them to storage in the pots. Any diseased or rotted bulbs should be discarded. Also many tulips (especially the large-flowered, exotic ones) split up into little bulblets after flowering. Some tulips will have a very small main bulb surrounded by tiny mini-bulbs, while others will have nothing but tiny bulbs. These bulblets could develop into big, flowering tulip bulbs – but only if you grow them on in perfect conditions for a few years. This is difficult to do because our climate is far

too wet for most tulips. Tulips come from Turkish hillsides where the average rainfall is similar to the Okanagan. Winters are very cold and summers hot and dry. Looking for a summer job? Start here Service Canada centre connects youth with employers BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

Local students on the hunt for summer jobs can head to the New Westminster Service Canada Centre for Youth for assistance. The centre is now open and ready to help businesses and young workers with their summer employment needs. It also connects young people with employers or homeowners for casual summer employment. “Whatever the job – big or small, short- or long-term – we can help you fill it,” said Katerina Marta, youth services officer. “In the coming weeks, youth services officers will be contacting local employers and youth to make them aware that our (centre) is now open and ready to assist them in any way it can.” Service Canada Centres for Youth provide employers or homeowners with a location to post job openings and young people with job postings, interview advice, resumé building and job search strategies. The centres also provide information on health and safety in the workplace.

In 2009, the local centre helped 120 youth and students by providing one-on-one assistance with activities such as resumé and cover letter writing and job searching techniques. During last year’s run, 334 youth and students attended 20 workshops offered during the summer. In addition to part-time or fulltime employment, young people can choose to sign up at the centre for the casual labour program. They indicate their work experience and availability and are then notified when a suitable job is available. “Casual labour helps youth obtain more work experience,” Robert L. Anderson, youth services officer and casual labour specialist, said in a press release. “If they are busy in the summer, travelling or going to school, they can work for a couple of hours or weeks and get a reference from their employers.” Lawn work, clerical duties, painting and flyer distribution are some examples of odd jobs that help students earn money. These jobs can vary from a few hours to a few weeks. Homeowners or employers who are interested in using the centre’s services – and youth who are looking for summer employment – can visit the New

The Grandview Steelers kicked off its 2010/11 Pacific International Junior Hockey League season a day before summer officially started. The Burnaby-based Steelers held their annual junior evaluation camp at the Burnaby Winter Club last weekend, which culminated in a rousing allstar game Sunday. Team Black outscored Team White 4-1 in the final period to post a 6-3 win in the showcase game. “There are a couple of kids who we’d like to sign to cards, but the No. 1 thing for these kids is to play Junior A (hockey),” said Steelers head coach Aldo Bruno. With the B.C. major midget league allowing more older-age 17-year-old players to play this season, Bruno says there is little indication of a drop-off in player numbers at the weekend junior B camp. “This year is probably our youngest camp so far. We’ve definitely seen a lot of 16-year-olds and a ton of 17-year-olds,” Bruno said. “We’re still limited to two 16-year-olds, but I don’t think the 17-yearold situation is going to change at all.” Player numbers at the camp were again well over

ing and winning team is important, but developing players to move on to higher levels is foremost in his mind. He believes by moving players through his program, the better players coming along will also want to be affiliated with the progressive Steelers’ club.

“The first thing we say to the kids is ‘Hopefully you only have one year with us. If you are here for two years, we’re a little disappointed.’ It’s about moving these kids forward,” Bruno said. The junior B Steelers will hold their main preseason camp, beginning Aug. 12.

A one-goal loss may have looked better on Burnaby than a one-goal win did on the unbeaten junior A New Westminster Salmonbellies. The junior Salmonbellies, winning its second consecutive B.C. Junior Lacrosse League game with just six goals, eked out a 6-5 victory over a short-staffed Burnaby Lakers club at Bill Copeland Sports Centre on Sunday. The win moved the ’Bellies a point ahead of Coquitlam on top of the junior A loop. The two league leaders meet Wednesday at the newly refurbished Coquitlam Sports Centre tonight at 8 p.m. New Westminster also played Port Coquitlam at home on Tuesday (after Record deadlines).

The ’Bellies started out in promising fashion, garnering the game’s first goal in the opening minute on a low shot from Leif Mydske. Kyle Robinson tallied shortly after with a goal on transition, but then the Salmonbellie wheels appeared to gradually grind to a halt. “They (Burnaby) plug the middle up, and that’s where we like to go,” said Mydske, who led the ’Bellies with a pair of tallies. “Honestly, if we want to get 13 goals like we did the last time, we have to shoot better from the outside.” Burnaby goalie Brodie MacDonald was up to the task, stopping 36 shots. Frank Scigliano was solid at the other end of the floor, stopping 28 shots for the win in goal, while improving on his league-

high 84.38 save percentage. Burnaby’s Mackenzie Davis, with his second goal on the night, and Blake Mattinson scored late in the third period in a desperation comeback to draw level. But a key shorthanded tally by Mydske in the opening minute of the third period and the eventual game-winner by Keegan Bal sealed the deal for the visitors. “Everyone wants to get up for us, but we have to learn to get up for everyone else,” said Mydske, who is currently third on the squad with 22 goals. “We have to start moving our feet more. When you’re not moving, anyone can check you. When you’re moving, that’s when you get the chances.” Matt MacGrotty gave the visitors a 3-2 lead early in the middle frame with a perfect finish on a clear-cut break. Daniel McQuade potted his 17th marker of the year,

in just his 10th game to date, later in the period to re-establish a onegoal advantage. The Lakers were playing without the services of two key snipers, Jackson Decker and Riley Loewen. Burnaby transition runner, Nick Bilic, who scored four times in the Lakers 11-9 overtime win against Langley three days earlier, got the team’s first goal to cut the first-period lead to 2-1. But less than two minutes later, Bilic was slapped with a game misconduct resulting from a five-minute back check that further lessened Burnaby’s scoring punch. The senior Salmonbellies continued to struggle through a rough patch in the Western Lacrosse Association season, falling to the Victoria Shamrocks for the second time in two weeks12-9atBearMountain Arena last Friday. The loss, New Westminster’s third in four games, has dropped the Salmonbellies’ record to 5-3 and has left the WLA wideopen to any club that can cobble together any consistency. The league standings are currently the tightest they have been in recent seasons, with just four points separating the bottom teams from second place. Even the first-place Shamrocks cannot feel home-free with a record of 7-3. Rhys Duch and Ryan Benesch got the home Shamrocks off to an early 3-0 lead. First-star Duch led all scorers with five goals and six points, while Benesch had a five-point outing, including a hat trick. Dean Hill helped out with six helpers. First-round draft pick Corbyn Tao, the game’s third star, had his best game to date in a ‘Bellie uniform, scoring four times while assisting on a fifth. City team sparkles at Jesse Bent memorial meet

Fifteen-year-old Royal City Track veteran Natasha Lazecki won five medals at the recent Jesse Bent Memorial meet at Percy Perry Stadium. Lazecki won the 200 metre hurdles, placed second in the 80m hurdles, long jump and javelin, while placing third in the 200m sprint. The Grade 9 New Westminster Secondary student will also compete at the B.C. Summer Games in Langley next month. Fellow senior Simon Rokeby was third in the 1,500m and fifth at 3,000m. Hannah Dixon, 16, was third in the javelin and fourth in both the 100m hurdles and 400m. The team’s nine-yearolds were also a force on the track. The boys’ team combined for 13 medals, while the girls garnered six more,

including Shianne Lowka, who won the shot put and was third in the long jump and 60m. Jenevieve Patry-Smith placed first in the high jump and Emma StewartBarnett had a personal-best win in the 800m. Hannah Bernoe combined with the previous three athletes for gold in the girls’ 4x100m relay. Newcomer Emma Hughes placed sixth in the 60m. Kiery Isbister, Alex Lazecki, Ryan Jensen and Maxwell Jones shared gold in the 400m sprint relay. Isbister also won the 60m hurdles and 800m, was second in the long jump. New Westminster Baseball Asssociation handed out its second annual Justin Morneau bursaries June 19. This year’s winners of the $1,000 awards were Brandon Harder, who will be attending Simon Fraser University to pursue a teaching degree; Mathew Battocchio, who will study criminology at Douglas College; and Sam Rokeby, who will attend the University of Alberta in natural resource management. “It’s about the kids, baseball and striving for excellence on and off the field,” said association president Ron Suffron in a press release. New Westminster will be hosting the major Little League provincials from July 23 to Aug. 2.

“We got to work with what we have and try and find success that way,” said Davis, who paced the Lakers with three points and leads the team with 19 goals and 20 assists to date. “It’s all we got to do, have our offence come out and put more than five goals in the net and have the defence do what they’re doing.” With scoring at a premium for both clubs, New Westminster can ill afford to lose its touch at this point in the season. The Salmonbellies had six games left in the season, including Tuesday’s match with PoCo, but with four of the upcoming games against Coquitlam and fourthplace Nanaimo, New Westminster is under pressure to find a quick answer to its recent scoring woes.

Johannes Reta was second in the 200m hurdles, while Aleksander Korzuchowski was fourth in the hurdle sprint and triple jump. Nina Schultz, 12, won the hurdles and triple jump, placed second in the high jump and third in the shot put. Marco Sherwood won the 200m hurdles and placed second in the hurdle sprint and third in the long jump. Devin Strome won the high jump and hurdles, while Simran Chane was third and fourth in the respective events. Simran Rai opened the meet with a win in the 1,500m race.

The Spartans track club showed well in a number of age classes at the Cheetah Track meet in Coquitlam last week. Damanpreet Rai won the juvenile girls’ 100 metre hurdles and placed second in the long jump, while teammate Manisha Kandola won the high jump and was a runner-up in the triple jump and 100m hurdles. Ali Nizamani was third in the boys’ 300-m hurdles. Junior Milena Stafanivic won the triple jump and Patrick Grzelak was second in the long jump. Olga Radivojevic, Abinnas Chane and Marco Saric also performed well. In the midget division, 14-year-old Ahmad Nizamani won the 80m hurdles and long jump and was third was in 200m. The New Westminster Royals squirt girls beat teams up to three years older to earn a berth in the softball provincial championships. The Royals advanced with a resounding 20-8 victory over the Richmond Strykers behind a complete game victory by pitcher Keira Jang in the doubleknockout district championships. New Westminster handed the Strykers their first loss following a 13-12 win in the first game of the final. Richmond won the second game 7-5. The provincials will take place in Vernon on July 9 to 11.
