Police say last Friday’s firearms bust at a New Westminster military surplus shop is part of a worrying trend across the country – replica and starter pistols being illegally converted to fire live ammunition.

The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit presented dozens of seized starter pistols, thousands of rounds of ammunition, body armour and several firearms that had either been illegally built from spare parts or converted from replica guns at a press conference today.

Firearms enforcement members raided Westley Military Surplus on Front Street on Feb. 25 as part of a five-month investigation dubbed “E-Penury.” Following a tip from two Coquitlam men who had been charged with firearms offences, the unit sent undercover officers to the store.

“As a result of that investigation, … Westley Military Surplus was identified as a source of illegal ammunition, that is, ammunition that could be purchased without having to provide a firearms licence as required by law,” said Sgt. Shinder Kirk, the unit’s spokesman.

Kirk said the undercover officers then learned from storeowner Westley William Baker that they could purchase replica starter pistols, which are legal.

“What investigators found disconcerting was the alleged counselling by the accused on how to convert these pistols into fully functioning firearms and operational machine guns,” Kirk added. “Both converted and unconverted pistols and replica starter machine guns are

Judge OKs legal action in worker’s death

More than six years after Lyle Hewer died at Weyerhaeuser’s now-closed New Westminster sawmill, his union co-workers are still fighting for him.

On Wednesday afternoon, Judge Terese Alexander ruled that the United Steelworkers can continue proceeding in their private prosecution of Weyerhaeuser.

The decision will allow the Crown or a private prosecutor to pursue charges of criminal negligence against Weyerhaeuser.

“Hopefully, this will bring some justice,” said Stephen Hunt, the steelworkers’ district director for Western Canada.

The steelworkers have engaged prominent lawyer and Queen’s Council member Glen Orris to argue their case. At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Orris said Weyerhaeuser will now have to answer the charge in court.

The steelworkers’ union will now wait for the attorney-general’s office to review the decision before proceeding further, Orris said.

“We’re simply at the point where we’re starting the process,” he said.

The steelworkers announced in March 2010 they were launching the private prosecution, a rarely seen legal manoeuvre that Orris admitted doesn’t happen very often because the courts want to safeguard against frivolous prosecutions.

In October, Orris started arguing his case behind closed doors in the New Westminster courthouse.

While both Worksafe B.C. and New Westminster Police Service investigators recommended to Crown counsel that there was enough evidence for charges to be laid, Crown twice declined to move forward with the case in criminal court.

The steelworkers’ union decided to move forward on the case because of a new law that came into effect in 2004. The Westray amendments to the Criminal Code were inspired by the death of 26 Nova Scotia coal miners in 1992 and were designed to impose criminal penalties on corporations that fail to protect the health and safety of their employees.

New Westminster sawmill. Hewer was clearing the bottom of a large grinding machine called a hog. The hog converts wood waste to chips. The debris wedged above him came loose while he was working on it and smothered him.

The machine was known to be dangerous, but sawmill senior management resisted work orders from line managers to make it safer.

According to a Worksafe B.C. report, mill managers determined that making the hog less dangerous, at a cost of $30,000, was too expensive.

In 2007, Worksafe B.C. levied a fine of $297,000 against Weyerhaeuser Canada, citing the fact mill management ignored safety concerns and condoned a culture where

now surfacing on our streets.”

Police recently seized two such guns in Nanaimo, one in Maple Ridge and a converted machine gun in Surrey.

New Westminster Police Service Chief Const. Dave Jones said he will soon be approaching New Westminster city council to discuss how the city can help by possibly revoking the business licences of stores found to be illegally distributing gun parts or ammo.

“We serve notice out of New West: The police service now has a process of working together with city staff to look at, review and hopefully deal with business licences and whether that business licence will continue to stay in place,” adding that he has already begun the process with Westley Military Surplus.

Jones estimated his officers seize replica guns about twice a year in New

Westminster and added his officers must always treat replicas as if they are real until proven otherwise, putting suspects who carry them danger.

Currently, there are no federal regulations on the importation, sale or distribution of starter pistols and they are completely untraceable, something police agencies would like to see changed. While the guns do have legal uses, including film production, dog training and actual use as starter pistols, Supt. Tom McCluskie of the anti-gang task force said demand for them is growing at a suspicious rate.

“How many more track meets have you heard about where we need to start importing as many of these starter pistols as we see here and that there’s a request in for? It just doesn’t correlate,” he said.

McCluskie said he is putting other military surplus stores on notice: “If you have any intention of selling

A new starter pistol sells for about $200.

Converted, it can go for as much as $2,500, but people buying those converted pistols are buying a shoddy and dangerous product, according to Const. Frank Grosspietsch, firearms expert.

“Because it’s not manufactured as an actual firearm, the chances of this gun actually blowing up in your face is great. Very simple. It’s not built to handle the pressure of actual ammunition,” he said.

Converting them to working guns or possessing one is a crime with a minimum three-year prison sentence.

Baker, 67, is charged with four counts of unauthorized transfer of ammunition, one count of unauthorized transfer of a firearm and one count manufacturing a firearm.

Police say more charges are pending. Baker has declined to comment on the case, and his lawyer was unavailable to speak on his behalf.

Nurses’ union voices criticism of hospital programs that keep people, especially seniors, out of the hospital to begin with.

“The Fraser Health Authority closed 200 acute care beds in the last two years, which is shocking given the growth of the population there,” she said. “The very thing that they complain about is the backlog of seniors who are coming into acute care, is directly attributable to the lack of investment in appropriate services to keep them healthy.”

Fraser Health spokesperson Joan Marshall countered McPherson’s assertion that the health authority has failed to plan.

“Fraser Health has actually done quite a bit of planning for population growth. We’ve completed a number of capital projects,” Marshall said.

“Look at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital, Chilliwack General has a recently refurbished emergency department, the Jim Pattison Surrey outpatient care and surgery centre will be opening soon. The new tower at Surrey Memorial has been approved, so there’s a number of plans actually made for the growing population of Fraser Health.”

The B.C. Nurses’ Union has joined the chorus of voices decrying Monday’s incidentatRoyalColumbian Hospital in which patients were assessed in the hospital’s Tim Hortons when all other space was occupied.

“We’re quite appalled that the (Fraser) Health Authority and even the minister himself, Colin Hansen, said he believes that it’s appropriate for emergency patients to be cared for in a Tim Hortons coffee shop,” said Debra McPherson, Union president. “This is not the first time this has happened, according to the nurses there.”

McPherson said she hears reports from nurses that Royal Columbian’s emergency room is regularly holding 27 to 30 excess patients while patients are kept in the corridors and halls. McPherson said she attributes the overcrowding, which she said occurs in every hospital across Fraser Health’s jurisdiction, to three things: failure to plan for population growth in the Fraser Valley, closure of St. Mary’s Hospital and a lack of investment into

Trial set to start Monday

By Jeanie Fraser’s count, it’s been more than 4,700 days between March 10, 1998, when her brother Vic was killed in her Surrey home, and Monday, when the trial for Gary Johnston begins.

Johnston is facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of Fraser, a Sapperton resident. The trial is scheduled to begin in New Westminster Supreme Court on March 7.

“It’s taken 4,745 days for this to get to court,” said Jeanie.

Fraser, 42, died on March 10, 1998 when he was visiting Jeanie’s home in Surrey.

Jeanie and her boyfriend weren’t home.

Fraser was stabbed to death, and his body was found on the floor inside Jeanie’s home.

It would take the police more than 11 years to make an arrest, as they took Johnston into custody in September 2009

in Montreal.

“It’s taken this many days again to get to court,” said Jeanie.

Johnston was arrested through the combined efforts of the Surrey RCMP and the Montreal police.

Jeanie told The Record in 2009 that the case haunted her.

“There were times in the past 11 years that I had given up, but then I remembered that I had to keep going for Vic,” said Jeanie.

Vic was a longtime resident of the Sapperton area and was known as a kind and gentle trucker. After Vic’s murder, he was laid to rest at Forest Lawn in Burnaby, and his co-workers at Phoenix Truck and Crane Service paid tribute to him with a 21-crane salute.

Enough with the water nonsense

Dear Editor:

I give up.

If I were a wrestler I would be tapping the mat.

Do the members of the school board not realize how bad the optics are on this? It is the cherry on top of new school delays, conflict of interest accusations, and the inability to close a school down that has an enrolment of 22 students (not to mention the “business company” in China).

Now, I don’t know anyone on the school board, and I’m sure they are very nice people, but you are making New Westminster look like fools with all this nonsense. Smarten up and behave like adults!

And to John Challinor II of Nestle Canada, if you are so confident that your bottled water is all that you say it is, then why don’t you put your money where your mouth is and use the New Westminster high school as a testing ground.

Nestle Canada pays for the proper water fountains to be installed and pay for an unbiased third party to track consumption for one year. If your facts are correct, then bottled water sales will not suffer, and you can use the data to promote your product ad nauseam.

Just think, you could use all the profits to develop that new product you are working on … “bottled air.”

By the way, I am just your average New West resident with no political affiliations, just sick of this garbage (both literally and figuratively).

The strongest argument brought up by people who wish to keep bottled water is that it is a matter of personal choice.

However, do we get to choose whether or not we wear seatbelts? Do we get to choose whether or not we can drive drunk?

As silly as those questions may be, the answer is obvious because some choices have detrimental consequences to both the individual and to the community and as such, a decision must be made as to what is better for the population as a whole.

In the case of bottled water, as with many other issues of “personal choice,” the choices we have made have left us in dire straits. The environment can no longer bear the consequences because too many people are choosing to be careless and wasteful.

Take plastic bags, for instance. Remember the huge uproar when there was talk of getting rid of them? Now almost all stores charge you extra for them. Before long, it’s going to be normal to just not have them at all because everyone brings their own cloth bag. I just hope the same attitude change to bottled water is not far behind.

And while we’re at it, why do we still sell toilets that aren’t dual-flush? Australia banned them long ago (they also got rid of plastic bags and the penny years before us too).

We need to all start making smarter choices that are good for not just ourselves but for everyone.

Re: Joke is over on bottled water issue (Opinion, The Record, Feb. 26).

Conflict of interest is a very serious subject, and it is one that is central to the integrity of public governance. I therefore find it very troubling that Mr. Samuels would suggest in his letter of Feb. 26 that the conflict

of interest questions I have raised in relation to trustee Lori Watt have been raised on a whim or on some sort of flimsy pretext.

Mr. Samuels even goes so far as to claim that the definition of conflict of interest being applied in relation to trustee Watt’s conflict of interest situation is “broad” and as insubstantial as the “flapping” of a butterfly’s wings.

Contrary to Mr. Samuels’ assertion, the definition of conflict of interest being applied in this matter is the one found in B.C.’s School Act, and it is very clear on the question.

Section 56(b) of the School Act states that a trustee has an indirect pecuniary interest in any matter in which the board is concerned if “the trustee … is in the employment of a person or firm that has a pecuniary interest in the matter.”

Conflict of interest may be a “joke” to Mr. Samuels, but for many others – including myself – it is not. Would Mr. Samuels think it was a joke if an employee of a major developer like Onni or Bosa sat on city council and did not declare a conflict of interest in matters that might impact his or her employer’s interests?

If Mr. Samuels is truly interested in exploring the conflict of interest questions I have raised, he can download a copy of the legal opinion I obtained from Blake, Cassels & Graydon. I have posted a copy of it online for public viewing at http://focusnewwest. wordpress.com.

I have also posted several other documents relevant to this issue, including a side-by-side comparison to the legal opinion Lori Watt obtained from Jonathan Baker.

People can read these documents and judge this issue for themselves while preparations are being made to file a formal application in this matter with the Supreme Court of B.C. under the School Act (application to the Supreme Court, unfortunately, being the only mechanism available in a case like this under the School Act).

Twenty per cent of municipalities have faced shortages in recent years.

According to Maude Barlow (Council of Canadians), Canada is a net exporter of bottled water, selling its ancient glacier waters all over the world mostly for the profit of the

foreign-owned, big four water companies. “Most provinces charge these companies next to nothing to extract this water from springs and aquifers, and whole watersheds are now under threat from this practice.”

In 2010 the United Nations’ General Assembly voted unanimously in favour of water as a human right in spite of the efforts to the contrary by the corporations selling water,

bottled and otherwise.

Lastly, kudos to the students, particularly Hannah Crisp and Marie-Claire Massicotte.

I thank them for their concern for the future of our planet, their courage to stand up and speak out and their determination to continue the fight.

Maybe some of it will rub off on the superintendent and the six trustees.

Cops warn about rash of break-ins in ’Borough

New Westminster police are warning Queensborough residents to be cautious following a spate of recent break-ins.

According to a news release from Sgt. Gary Weishaar, as many as nine breakand-enters have taken place on the island in the last three months with similarities in each one. The break-ins have all occurred during daylight hours while the homeowners were out.

Weishaar said police are stepping up presence in the neighbourhood, as are volunteers from Citizens Crime Watch patrol and bike squad volunteers.

He added that residents in the area should keep an eye out for suspicious people loitering and contact police if they see anything suspicious. People should call 911 immediately if they see someone trying to gain access to locked homes.

Weishaar said police suspect the thieves are coming into Queensborough from another community and that New Westminster police are working with other

local police forces in the ongoing investigation.

In the meantime, Weishaar said residents should brush up on safety tips, including answering knocks on the door to make thieves aware that someone is home and never letting a stranger in the house.

He advises that residents keep doors and windows locked or even double locked if you they are going out, even for a short time, and always make the home look like it is occupied by having lights and a radio on a timer and keeping the yard clean and free of delivered newspapers.

Using “strategic lighting” and trimming back trees and shrubs can be a deterrent for would-be thieves as well.

Lastly, Weishaar recommends neighbours look out for each other by joining or starting a local Block Watch or Crime Free Multi-Housing program, which police can help organize.

Public art under review

A new committee will oversee the development and implementation of a public art master plan for the Royal City.

Council has agreed to establish a public art advisory committee and has approved the committee’s terms of reference.

A city staff report noted that the advisory committee will encourage the development of public art and develop a public art mas-

The committee will also provide input into on public art policies, projects and funding strategies.

“The public art projects will be juried by a committee that is made up of experts,” said Coun. Bill Harper. “They will be making a decision on what the public art looks like.”

It will, but the Yarn Bombers aren’t waiting.

As you know, one of the first signs of spring is pink cherry blossoms.

The Yarn Bombers are planning to make the Joy Kogawa cherry tree in Vancouver bloom early.

Yarn Bombers are guerrilla knitters who are making the world a warmer and more beautiful place.

They have wrapped fences and trees in socks and sweaters in Mexico City, scattered knit and crocheted tulips and mushrooms in a Netherlands park, and placed a giant knit orange squid on the lap of the statue of Darwin in London.

And the Yarn Bombers are coming to a street near you.

Opening reception Sunday for new exhibition at Arts Council of New Westminster gallery in Queen’s Park

Patricia Davies is exploring the power of myth in a new mixed-media show at the Arts Council of New Westminster gallery.

Literature of the Spirit runs at the arts council gallery in Centennial Lodge, Queen’s Park, until March 26, and an opening reception is set for March 6 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Davies, in an artist’s statement, notes that much of her work has been inspired by Joseph Campbell’s book The Power of Myth.

“He suggests that ‘one of our problems today is that we are not well acquainted with the literature of the spirit. We’re interested in the news of the day and the problems of the hour,’” Davies says.

Campbell also notes that: “We’re so

engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget that the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it’s all about.

Myths teach you that you can turn inward, and you begin to get the message of the symbols.”

Davies points out that myths are metaphors or poetic responses to the mysteries and ideas that cannot be explained concretely – and that is some of what she explores in her art.

The other dominant theme of her work is nature.

“I used to think that the two themes were unrelated until I realized that it is the mystery and beauty of life that fascinates me,” she says in her artist’s statement.

“Living on the West Coast, we are abundantly graced with the beauty of nature.

My fabric collages reflect the West Coast landscape. I choose to enjoy and celebrate life’s mysteries and beauty.”

Davies’ work incorporates the use of

handmade paper, fabric and photo transfers – reflecting her varied background in art.

She took at textile design course at the University of British Columbia in 1993 and received a diploma in visual arts from UBC in 1993.

She’s also taken courses at Emily Carr University in handmade paper, bookmaking and typography, as well as Photoshop, and she has taken classes in such varied art forms as fabric dyeing, collage, book arts, painting and surface design.

“Because I have an eclectic nature, my work combines an eclectic sense of content with an eclectic use of materials,” she says.

Violinist on stage with symphony

Violinist Nancy DiNovo is making a return to the Royal City.

DiNovo, who appeared with the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra last spring, is back with the orchestra for its concert this weekend.

On Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m. she will open the orchestra’s new spring season at the Massey Theatre with Violin Concerto in D Minor by Jean Sibelius.

“Nancy DiNovo has the high level of vir-

tuosity that this thrilling work by Sibelius demands,” local arts promoter Tony Antonias says.

The orchestra’s conductor and music director, Jin “Jack” Zhang, has also included two other great works on the program: Symphony Number 1 by Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven’s Overture to Fidelio, the only opera he ever wrote.

The concert is at Massey Theatre, and admission is by donation at the door.

The New Westminster Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest community orchestras on the West Coast, and it includes musicians of all ages – from their teens to seniors.

Its season runs from September to May, and rehearsals take place Sunday afternoons in New Westminster.

he City of New Westminster is hoping for a good turnout at this weekend’s rally for the Healthy Weight Loss Challenge that’s now underway.

Some of the celebrity trainers from CBC’s Village On A Diet television series will be attending the Healthy Weight Loss Challenge rally that will take place on Sunday, March 6 at 1 p.m. in the Queen’s Park Arenex. The rally is designed to inspire and motivate the 260 people who have signed up for the community weightloss challenge, but everyone is invited to attend.

“We’re really hoping for a great turnout. CBC has just confirmed that they will be attending to promote their Live Right Now campaign, and we’d like to sign as many New West residents up for this as possible,” said Sandy Earle, New Westminster’s

New Westminster Girl Guides collected more than 1,700 items for the Hospitality Project at their recent International Fair.

The New Westminster Girl Guides held their 46th annual International Fair on Feb. 26 at Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School.

The event celebrated the international sisterhood of Guiding in 144 nations around the world with displays and presentations about other Guiding countries.

The 1st New Westminster Rangers added a service component to the fair, with the Girls Helping Babies campaign that saw Girl Guides in the New Westminster District collect items for babies.

“They collected over 1,700 baby items such as baby food, diapers, clothes and toys and donated them to the Hospitality Project,” said a press release. “Kimberly Hayek and Coun. Jaimie McEvoy,

who was representing the city as well as the Hospitality Project, were at hand to receive the contribution.

“Hayak said she was moved to tears at the generosity shown by New Westminster Guiding towards the community, and feels the real benefit to the families will be in knowing that there are people, in the community that care about them.”

The intriguing history of uptown New Westminster is the focus of this month’s New Westminster Historical Society evening.

New Westminster’s young guns are loading up for another run at the B.C. AAA high school girls’ basketball championships.

But the unranked Hyacks will have to do it with a roster of girls whose average age adds up to little more than a junior-aged team.

The Hyack girls are one of the most successful high school hoop programs in the province with 26 top-eight finishes, including three B.C. banners.

But the last time New Westminster won a provincial title was back in 1994.

The program suffered a setback in 2000 when a core group of players transferred to Brookswood and started a mini dynasty at the Langley school.

Current head coach Doug Woodward stepped in to salvage the program and did so with youth.

“We had to rebuild the program and one way we did it was to bring some of the Grade 9s to reboot the program, and we just carried on.”

Woodward started out with his daughter Krista and junior Mollie Stelmack, who together lifted New Westminster to three con-

With less than a week before the opening provincial tipoff against No. 5 seed South Kamloops at Capilano University on March 9, Woodward says consistency is what his young starters, including co-captain Jaylen Canton, juniors Natasha Lazecki, Kelsey Lonergan and Meriam Ali, and first-year forward Jettie McLaughlin, have to strive for.

“When we work hard all the time and push the other members of the team, we get better. That’s why we’ve done well with our leadership,” he added.

“Leadership quality has always been at the point guard position and that’s what we need.

“A lot of those teams we had, shouldn’t have been there.”

Opening tipoff

The New Westminster Hyacks will face No. 5 seed South Kamloops in their opening game of the B.C. AAA high school girls’ basketball championships at Capilano University on March 9.

Tipoff is 3:30 p.m. The championship final is 2 p.m. on March 12.

Burnaby and New Westminster will be ringette central for the provincial club championships next week.

Burnaby’s Bill Copeland Sports Centre and Burnaby Lake Arena will be the ground zero for the A provincials, while Royal City’s Queen’s Park and Moody Park arenas will handle most of the B and C championships from March 10 to 13. Burnaby Winter Club will handle a bit of the overflow scheduling on the Saturday.

As the host association, Burnaby/New Westminster will field teams in the under-14, -16, -19 and 18-plus teams in the A division.

BurWest has perhaps its best chance for a medal at u-16A and 18-plusB. The teen team topped the A division regular season rankings, while the B team posted an impressive 10-11 record this season.

Burnaby/New West has a good history at previous provincials.

Last year, the Lower Mainland representative came second at u-16 and third at u-14 in the A division and first at u-19.

In 2009, BNW won two gold at the 11-and-under petite and 15-and-over junior divisions.

The association also medalled in each of the previous four years as well, including a gold in belle A in 2007 and petite C a year earlier.

“It’s very exciting,” said association director of promotions Susanna Chow.

“The whole experience has been positive. A lot of companies are positive about (helping children), even if it’s a small company giving us a $20 gift certificate. It all adds up.”

The four-day tournament kicks off March 10 with early morning 7 a.m. starts most days and runs all day.

Final placement games start at the Copeland centre on March 13, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The B and C medal matches at Queen’s Park start at 2 p.m.

The association has also been granted hosting rights for the Canadian ringette championships in 2012.

The Burnaby-based junior B club exited its bestof-seven first-round playoff series in five games following a 4-2 defeat to the Delta Ice Hawks in Ladner Tuesday.

Douglas College business accounting student RuiLin Huang was named the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association female badminton player of the year Wednesday for an unprecedented third straight year.

Huang won six individual titles this season, including four in women’s singles, and is undefeated in 45 games to date.

Over her three-year college career at Douglas, Huang has won 112 games. Her only loss over that period came in a team event match.

The two-time defending national collegiate women’s singles champion is looking for a third consecutive title at this year’s championships hosted by Mount Allison University in New Brunswick this weekend.

Obituaries

Finn Berle Sept 6, 1943 - Feb 22, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Finn Berle. He is now with The Lord and re-united with his father and brothers.

Finn is survived by: his mother, Jenny; sister, Ingrid; nieces, Tamara and Lisa; and nephew, Troy.

His family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the professionals who assisted in enabling Finn to end his days with grace and dignity: BC Cancer Society; Fraser Health; Royal Columbian Hospital; Burnaby General Hospital; Nurse Next Door; Home Instead. He died at home, comfortable and with loved ones by his side.

Finn lived life to the full and succeeded in carving out his own destiny while, selflessly, being a rock for all those he loved. Friends and family will recall countless acts of generosity, insightful humour, poetry and musicianship.

A celebration of Finn’s life will be held on Saturday, March 5th from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. (2516 136St, South Surrey).

In lieu of flowers, donation to The BC Cancer Society or Fraser Health would be appreciated.

Russ Duncan 1925-2011

It is with tears and great memories we announce the passing of Russ Eve Duncan (nee Russell) who passed away on February 15th. Predeceased by husband John, brother Malcolm & Margarite, sister in law Margaret and niece Gail. Survived by brother Al (Torch); children Jim (Delee), Bruce (Kathleen) & Erin; grandchildren Eric, Spencer and John. Russ was born in North Vancouver.

In 1932 the Russell family moved to Regina where they lived until Russ, in her early teens struck out on her own to Toronto. There in the 1940’s she worked for de Havilland building the Mosquito bomber. In 1945 Russ won the “Miss Models Model” contest, defeating over 3000 entrants. Her modeling career was launched and she moved to New York. It was there she discovered her lasting passion, dance. One of her regular dance partners was Ira Murray brother to the famous Arthur Murray. She returned to Vancouver as the house model for the Couture dept at the Hudson Bay Company where she met John. They married in 1954 and enjoyed all Vancouver’s blessings including water sports, skiing and camping. In 1956, they moved to Calgary, bought a restaurant and saw the birth of their sons, Jim and Bruce. They missed Vancouver, and came back for the birth of their daughter, Erin. Russ was involved with founding of the Sharks Swim Club, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and The United Church. Her real passion was the Dance Box which she started in 1972. She bought an old mail truck painted it hot pink, stocked it up and drove to dance studios across the lower mainland to fill the need for dance supplies. The Duncan TV room was changed into a store which overflowed to a shed, until the first “real” store on Austin Ave in Coquitlam was opened. The Langley store followed close behind, as she ran the business with her usual flair and spirit, while building a reputation as “the go to” person for Pointe Shoe fittings. She fit and took pictures of thousands of the ‘first pairs’. Russ’s first acting break came in her 70’s.

She had parts in Cold Squad,Animal Miracles and many commercials. She was involved with the Cranberry Saucies Red Hat group which she loved, Russ was never one to miss wearing a fashionable (or not) chapeau. She golfed, white water rafted, snorkeled, made pottery, painted, swam, and loved to travel. Russ was a remarkable woman who lived her life to the fullest, right up to her very last days. She was a connoisseur of a good Martini and never missed a party. A celebration of her life will be held on her birthday April 17th 2011. Heartfelt thanks to Royal Columbian Hospital 5th floor South & North and Crossroads Hospice. In lieu of flowers a dance scholarship fund will be set up in her name. Donations can be sent to the Dance Box with scholarship fund noted or go have a good Martini.

As the follow spot fades she slowly turns and walks away. The final curtain has come down. Bravo

A minimum of five years experience in senior’s rental housing management as a Property Manager (public or private) is preferred.
