Let it snow, let it snow Winter arrives early in the Royal City

New Westminster had its first real taste of winter on Thursday.

Environment Canada reported around 10 centimetres of snow had fallen by the end of the day, creating trouble for midday commuters – although it wasn’t anything the city’s small army of street cleaners couldn’t handle.

“Unfortunately, they built the city on the side of a hill, so it can be a bit of a struggle,” said city street cleaner Greg Dodgshon with a laugh.

He said coping with the heavy snowfall went better than expected. “I’ve been doing this for close to 20 years and, for that much snow, it was surprising, it went really well. Usually we have ◗Snow Page 2

Board adopts conflict-of-interest policy

The board of education passed a conflict-of-interest policy for trustees, but for one trustee the conflict issue is an “insult.”

Earlier this month, Voice trustee Jim Goring introduced a last-minute motion to the board, saying it urgently needed to develop a conflict policy for trustees because the district had entered into union contract negotiations with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

“The original policy introduced by trustee Goring, while he says it wasn’t any kind of personal attack, I really don’t think that’s true. I think it was political grandstanding,” trustee Lori Watt told The Record.

She felt that Goring attacked her integrity with his motion, which dealt with conflict as it relates to the financial interest of a trustee, including those with a family member working for the district, those who received campaign contributions from an entity that has a financial interest in the district or who are shareholders in a

firm with financial ties to the district.

Though Goring had been the one pushing for a conflict policy, it was trustee Michael Ewen who brought forward the motion that was passed in a 5-2 vote – with Watt and trustee Brent Atkinson being the only two trustees to oppose it.

Ewen was trying to build consensus with his conflict motion, Watt said, though she still didn’t support it.

“Had it been introduced differently, maybe I would have supported it,” she said, referring to Goring’s original bid.

governed by the School Act with regards to conflict.

“I’m tired of hearing stories in the newspaper about how I’m in conflict,” she said. “It was very clear that this was a move to remove any labour-endorsed candidates from any discussions.

“At the end of the day, I will still govern myself under the School Act,” she said. “It doesn’t really change anything in terms of our regulations.”

Rick Molstad still can’t get the vision of 500 Santas streaming down Columbia Street at last year’s Hyack Christmas Parade of Lights out of his head.

The flash mob of red-suited Jolly St. Nick’s came streaming out of the Columbia Street SkyTrain station and made an impromptu appearance at last year’s parade.

“We try and have only one Santa so that we don’t confuse the kids,” said Molstad, the parade director. “When all those Santas came out, we didn’t know what to do.”

For the most part, those happy Santas were well behaved, with one exception.

“We had to write, I think, one letter of apology for one of the Santas,” said Molstad. “It was definitely interesting with all those Santas.”

This year’s parade is set for Saturday, Dec. 4, starting at 4 p.m. and culminating with a tree lighting ceremony just before 6 p.m.

The 24th version of the parade is scheduled to include approximately 65 floats and entries, including bands and

horns. The larger trains are heavier to switch because they have more tonnage to push or pull, and every car takes up the slack going both ways. The noise can carry for miles, never absorbed by the ballast on the ground.

The train cars come from all over North America, and the condition of the cars is unknown, because the railways no longer have inspection safety standards that satisfy the majority of the public demands on noise and non-braking applications in switching yards. The railway has this historic claim blaming the public for crossing accidents and run-overs, claiming such things as the brakes work, but don’t stop the train. Or the brakes do not work so the train won’t stop.

The senility of the system says we will use louder horns because we have gotten away with it so far. The public complaints are very justified and post-judge the early day being brought into today’s world in New Westminster, without public legislation and only railway regulation, as if were not here.

Politicians in New Westminster, who pass plans to build residential highrises beside the railway tracks, are reluctant at the same time to have the local real estate board put a railway danger clause in the contract so the buyer has the knowledge first, and then can beware.

All one has to do is go for a walk along the Quayside and count the real estate signs. People want out of something they did not know they were getting into. And one thing for sure, they are not at fault.

This same transportation problem is chronic throughout North America. In the early ’50s most railways moved out of big cities, got rid of passengers, then went to the jet.

Today the cities have caught up to them again, with enormous growth patterns, and the railways are circled by that sprawl and are trapped in the circle that grew around them. Their logic seems to be, louder horns for denser off-rail traffic hazards, and longer trains so there are fewer of them to interfere with highway traffic.

In 1987, Judge Foisy of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench told CN and CP the cause of the Hinton crash was productivity over safety. In other words, moving freight and ignoring safety regulations caused the biggest passenger train disaster of last century.

So for those of you who live along the New Westminster right-of-way, plan for a big railway accident, because they got the message all wrong.

Fees for cancer tests discouraging people Dear Editor:

Re: Cancer tests should be covered, Letters to the editor, The Record, Nov. 13.

I have spent the last 20-odd years complaining to any and every MLA and/or MP that the fee for the prostate-specific antigen test is not only unfair but also discouraging men from taking the test.

I am now in the fortunate position whereby I will not be paying the fee in the future since my last paid PSA test started the ball rolling by indicating that I had prostate cancer from whence came the biopsy, the estrogen injections and the seven weeks of radiation therapy, which now, hopefully, has solved the problem.

The radiation therapy visits to Surrey Memorial Hospital were shared with my wife, whose mammogram had detected a cancerous lump, which again hopefully was detected in time for an effective cure.

I appreciate that many letter writers felt obligated to call our editorial antiSemitic.

I don’t agree with that assessment.

But, frankly, I would

rather have allies of Jews erring on the side of speaking out against what they viewed as an antiSemitic statement, than not speaking out or writing.

Whatever you may agree with or disagree with, it is, in my opinion, better to share your

thoughts.

That is, after all, what the editorial was all about: freedom to speak and criticize and, hopefully, do so without fear of prosecution or persecution.

Parking pressures growing in Sapperton

Coun. Betty McIntosh believes the city needs to find ways of addressing mounting parking pressures around Sapperton Park.

McIntosh said people who want to park around Sapperton Park are finding it increasingly difficult to find spots. She said there’s no dedicated parking for Sapperton Park, which is located at East Columbia and Sherbrooke streets.

“Those teams that are practising don’t just generate from New Westminster,” she said of park goers. “It’s another pressure point in Sapperton.”

At the Oct. 25 council meeting, McIntosh served notice that she’d like staff to report on suggestions to re-establish parking on the south and west side lanes around Sapperton Park. Parking was previously permitted in the lanes.

“I am confident it will work,” she said.

“There are ways of doing parking that would work.”

McIntosh, a Sapperton resident, said there used to be parking in the lanes around Sapperton Park, including the lane that runs parallel to Sherbrooke Street and a lane that runs above the park’s playground.

“It’s because of the high usage of the park,” she said. “That’s great. That is what parks are for. You should also provide some parking for the park.”

In addition to park goers, McIntosh said people going to Royal Columbian Hospital and nearby businesses and churches are having a hard time finding parking.

McIntosh said Sapperton is continuing to densify and businesses have opened that are attracting people to the area. She’s confident the city would be able to find additional parking spots in the area.

In 2009, the city removed several parking spaces in front of Sapperton Park on East Columbia Street.

‘Con Air’ flies again

New West police have flown yet another out-of-province criminal back home again. On Nov. 15, members of the New Westminster Police Service arrested a 33year-old man as a result of a fraud investigation.

“A check of the male found that he had a lengthy criminal history including robberies, property crime and violence,” said police spokesperson Sgt. Gary Weishaar.

“It was also learned that he was wanted

by the Toronto Police Service for breach of a one-year conditional sentence order after being found guilty of multiple counts of assault and uttering threats.”

Robert Joseph Fraser had agreed to several conditions in order to avoid going to jail, conditions he violated by relocating to B.C. Fraser was flown back under escort to Ontario earlier this week and transported to jail.

It seems only fitting that snow is falling as Morna Edmundson chats about the Elektra Women’s Choir’s concert in New West this weekend.

The soft white blanket is the perfect backdrop for Chez Nous, the concert set for 2 p.m. today (Saturday, Nov. 27) at Queens Avenue United Church.

It’s a concert Elektra has been performing on the first Sunday of Advent since 2005 – each time including guest artists and a children’s choir.

This year’s concert features harpist Heidi Krutzen, flutist Lorna McGhee,

and pianist/organist Stephen Smith. The Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus, under the direction of Marisa Gaetanne, will also take the stage.

“It’s going to be beautiful,” promises Edmundson, the choir’s artistic director.

The program will feature both familiar and not-so-familiar melodies designed to get audiences into a Christmas frame of mind.

“It’s always a mix of familiar things and new and exciting things,” explains Edmundson.

This year’s concert centrepiece is Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, the 1942 work that has become a choral classic. Audiences can also expect arrangements of some traditional songs – a Derek Holman arrangement of In Dulci Jubilo, a Stephen Smith arrangement of the traditional English Yorkshire Wassail, John Rutter’s arrangement of Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day and a Ken Berg arrangement of the Austrian Still, Still, Still, among

Teen earns honour THE LIVELY CITY JULIE MACLELLAN

S

arah Quinn is winning honours again.

The 14-year-old New Westminster girl has just earned the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Silver Medal for Grade 5 voice.

The Silver Medal awards go to the students who achieve the highest mark in the province at each grade level. Sarah earned 91 on her Grade 5 voice exam in June – which puts her among the top one per cent of students across the country and earned her a First Class Honours With Distinction.

The medals were presented at a ceremony at Mount Seymour United Church in North Vancouver on Nov. 13.

Sarah is a Grade 9 French immersion student at New Westminster Secondary School, going into her third year of studying voice with local voice and piano teacher Lois Weninger.

You may remember Sarah from a feature article that ran in The Record in May, when both Sarah and

Krista Gibbard – a 17-yearold student of Weninger’s – were chosen to compete at the Performing Arts B.C. 2010 Festival.

Sarah has sung with the B.C. Girls’ Choir and the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus, and she’s currently in the senior chamber choir and jazz choir at NWSS, where she also plays clarinet in the concert band.

Besides her voice lessons, she also studies piano with Weninger, and she recently completed her intermediate foundation ballet exam – which ends her seven years of dance study because she wants to focus on voice. She has aspirations to become a professional opera singer.

Kudos to Sarah once again.

Your husband is most definitely not correct. In British Columbia, marriage is considered an economic partnership. Once a married couple separates, they are entitled to apply for a division of family assets. The starting point is an equal division of all assets used for a family purpose. Such assets can include (amongst others) the family home, RRSPs, employment pensions and household goods and effects. The longer the marriage, the less likely a court will deviate from an equal division of the family assets although both parties are entitled to ask the court to divide the assets unequally if an equal division would be unfair in a specific set of circumstances. You should seek legal advice regarding your entitlement to a division of assets.

Queensborough residents demonstrated a flair for photography and a passion for their community in the Hot Shots! photo contest.

The City of New Westminster held the contest as part of the Queensborough community plan planning pro-

cess. The photo contest was meant to provide a fun way of engaging the community in the planning process, allowing them to share their pride, spirit and creativity through photography.

“We will be putting them in the Queensborough plan,” senior planner Lil Ronalds said about some of the submissions. “We wanted to involve the com-

munity at a very organic level in the plan.”

The Queensborough plan will help guide future growth and development in the Queensborough neighbourhood.

“We had quite a few more entries than our downtown one, which is really exciting,” Ronalds said. “We got some incredible photos. We are really ◗Hot shot Page 23

oy (Buster) Cairns’ contributions to the Royal City won’t soon be forgotten. Cairns, who was born in Clayburn, B.C., in 1925, passed away on Nov. 13 at the age of 85.

The Royal City resident volunteered with the New Westminster Police Service for more than 20 years.

“He was an awesome, awesome, awesome gentleman,” said Const. Bruce Ballingall. “He worked really hard to make New Westminster a safe place.

He was an awesome community partner. He is definitely going to be missed.

He is what we call a straw that stirs the drink.”

Cairns served in the Canadian Air Force in the Second World War. He was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in soccer.

“Roy was a member of Canada’s first World Cup soccer team and was also awarded Athlete of the Year in 1957,” said an obituary.

“Roy was further honoured with recognition in the New Westminster and Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame.”

A memorial service is being held on Saturday, Nov. 27 (today) at noon at Columbia-Bowell Funeral Chapel, 219 Sixth St. In lieu of flowers, people may make a donation in Roy’s name to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation.

Urban Academy craft fair packs the house A CLASS ACT

he weekend craft sale at Urban Academy was a big hit, with even Mayor Wayne Wright making his way to the event to support the independent school’s fundraiser.

Christmas at the Manor Craft Sale was held on Nov. 20 and 21, with roughly 1,200 people showing up for the fundraiser at the Victorian-style manor, which houses the school.

Attendees were able to enjoy Christmas carols, sung by students, just before the mayor cut the

ribbon to officially open the fair. The sale also featured an old-fashioned tearoom staffed by student volunteers who served up tea, coffee and cookies.

Money raised at the event will go to support the school’s art, drama, French and music programs.

Urban Academy is a non-profit independent school in New Westminster. The artsinfused school offers programs for junior kindergarten to Grade 10 and plans to expand to Grade 12 by 2012. It offers a tuition-assistance program and awards thousands of dollars in scholarship money to students.

Lord Kelvin Elementary school has a new face at the helm.

hired to replace retiring principal Barb Keating, who was at the Moody Park Elementary school for about a year. Previously, Keating was the principal at F.W. Howay Elementary.

Rama will take over principal duties at Kelvin on Jan 1, 2011. She brings more than 20 years of experience as a teacher, vice-principal and principal in the Abbotsford school district.

She has extensive experience with instructing English-as-a-second-language and special education and served both as a department head and counselling coordinator.

She was the Canadian Teachers’ Federation representative for teaching in Kathmandu, Nepal. Rama also has roots in New Westminster. She was born in New West and lived in Queensborough as a child.

Local link to ferries OUR PAST

his year is the 50th anniversary of B.C. Ferries. The fleet started in 1960 with the MV Tsawwassen and the MV Sidney, and two terminals at Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay. Personally we have used the ferry service since the beginning of its operation and continue to use that particular run on a regular basis, always enjoying the trip.

One ferry with a local connection is the Queen of New Westminster.

Actually this ship has two connections to our history. Having first sailed in 1964, she is one of the older vessels in service. We were on the Queen of New Westminster recently and noted a plaque mounted on a wall on the main deck. It states: “Presented to MV Queen of New Westminster, compliments of the Mayor and Council and citizens of the City

of New Westminster, The Royal City, B.C., commemorating the maiden voyage, July 1964.”

Other dates on nearby plaques mark the phases of the ship as it aged, grew in size and continued to serve. One of those noted dates is 1973, when the ship underwent a conversion to increase space and carrying capacity. Part of the innovative process included actually lengthening the vessel by cutting the ship in half and sticking in a new mid-section.

The plaques also note that in 1991 the vessel was completely refurbished and in 2008, completely upgraded.

The second local city connection with the Queen of New Westminster, involves the conversion and enlargement in 1973.

As noted previously, this process was quite innovative and drew a lot of attention, so it stood to reason that when the work was completed, something special was needed to promote what had taken place. What better way than to sail her into the town she was named after – New Westminster.

For a couple of days, as

we remember, the Queen of New Westminster was moored at the dock on the local waterfront. Again, if memory is reasonably correct, there were tours of the ship as well as a special by-invitation-only gathering on board. The affair focused on the Queen of New Westminster and was wellattended by many government and senior officials and dignitaries.

As the very new curator for the city looking after Irving House, the museum, archives and so on, Archie was invited to the event and was able to meet many people involved with the project. A special item was obtained that day for the city archives.

After this very new and “green” curator had been introduced to then-premier Bill Bennett by thenmayor Muni Evers of New Westminster, he proceeded to relieve the premier, for archival purposes, of a telegram to which he had referred in his remarks.

That telegram is probably still in the archives.

Swim team more important than self

Sophomore starts SFU hoop team out right

ForAlexandraSchofield, winning the Burnaby district’s only gold medal at the B.C. high school swim championships took a second place to what it took to just get there.

The17-year-oldBurnaby Mountain Secondary student and Simon Fraser Aquatics club swimmer expected to be on the podium following the open girls’ 100-metre butterfly final.

Schofield took first place in the event in a winning time of 1:03.54, nearly two seconds ahead of the next fastest swimmer.

She also made final swims in the open freestyle and backstroke races at the provincials held in Nanaimo, coming fourth and fifth, respectively.

But perhaps more important to Schofield were the results of her two Mountain teammates Cristian Cristurean and David Pinksy.

The two Grade 9 Mountain students made up the other half of the Mountain swim team.

Cristurean made the consolation finals in the open boys’ freestyle and individual medley. Pinsky was a consolation finalist in the 100m breaststroke.

It was with a school team in mind that Schofield undertook the job to organize the group in time for the provincials.

“I really wanted there to be a high school swim team. I always thought it was ridiculous that we had a swim academy but no swim team.”

“It wasn’t hard to get the swimmers on board, but it was harder to get the teachers. That was difficult,” Schofield said.

She found, without the help of an in-school sponsor, getting information and the necessary forms from B.C. School Sports was also a bit stressful.

She succeeded in getting all the paperwork done just one week before the actual provincial qualifying meet was to be held.

Now that Schofield succeeded in creating a swim team at Mountain, she is not about to let it become a one-year wonder.

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe recorded a double-double in both games for the Clan.

The sophomore forward posted 25 points and 13 rebounds in SFU’s 88-65 win over Southern Oregon University Nov. 20.

A day earlier, RaincockEkunwe had a monster night, scoring 24 points, while adding 12 boards, seven steals, five assists and three blocks in a 75-69 win over the Warner Pacific College Knights.

The Clan also got a solid outing from Anna Carolsfeld against Southern Oregon.

Carolsfeld chipped in with 18 points and 11 rebounds, including six-ofseven from the floor and a perfect six-for-six at the charity stripe.

In Portland, Kristina Collins finished the game with three three-pointers and 16 total points for SFU. New Westminster Secondary grad Kia Van Laare provided eight points in the win, including a pair of threes and two at the foul line.

SFU is in Denver, Colorado this weekend against Western State and Metro State universities.

The Clan men were not so lucky in their opener, losing 92-79 to Hawaii Pacific in Oregon Nov. 17.

Ricky Berry led all SFU scorers with 29 points.

Justin Brown added 17 for the Clan men.

A win against West Van would have pitted North in a rematch with Pool C runner-up Gladstone.

North, which had won Pool D in the Nov. 17 preliminaries, lost to Gladstone 2-0 in a controversial championship round match on the Saturday.

“We lost a lot of traction (momentum) in that game,” Ditchfield said. “I would have

liked to play against (Gladstone) again.”

Still, Ditchfield was happy with the players, who as a team were less than 100 per cent healthy.

“This is the furthest that this group of seniors have gone in the Vancouver and Districts,” she said.

Burnaby Mountain and wild card No. 2, New Westminster, also qualified for the Lower Mainlands.

Both schools were eliminated on the second day of competition.

Mountain fell to Point Grey 2-0, while New Westminster also lost in straight sets to Gladstone.

On Wed. November 24, 2010 Lex Henderson peacefully passed away with family at his side. He is survived by his wife,Bina,six children Kelly (Cam), Colleen (Laurence), Maureen (Colin), Rick (Ann), Brian (Joan) and Kathy (Gert), 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, his sister Eileen Thome, and many nieces and nephews, predeceased by his sister Jean Glanville.

Lex will be remembered as a compassionate educational leader, a sports enthusiast, a contributor to the community, the most loyal of friends and above all a dedicated family man. He has touched the hearts of countless people over the years and left aSPACE lasting imprint with all those he met.

BOOKING Born in Vancouver and raised in South Burnaby, Lex was a teacher and For: KELLY school administrator in Burnaby from 1950-1985. As a young man Lex Rep: LBampton played softball and soccer, captaining the New Westminster Royals to the Ad#: 1282871 Dominion Cup Soccer Championship.

Lex was an avid supporter and volunteer of many high school sports both locally and provincially. His community contributions included New Westminster School Board Trustee, president of New Westminster and District Concert Band, and after retirement volunteer driver for the Cancer Society.

A constant in Lex’s life was sharing his passion for outdoor activities with family, friends and newcomers - camping, fishing, crabbing, outdoor fires, gardening. Lex was a man of great character. He will be deeply missed by the many who loved him, children and adults alike.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wed. December 1, 2010 at Roma Hall 940 Ewen Ave. New Westminster.

13 Annual To the Heart of the Matter GALA EVENING th

On Friday, February 11, 2011, the Rotary Clubs of New Westminster-Royal City and Burnaby and Monarch Place, will host the 13th Annual “To the Heart of the Matter” Gala Evening at the Inn at the Quay. Donations from local businesses and individuals are sold at the Silent and Live Auctions to raise funds to support Monarch Place, and several internationally sponsored Rotary charitable initiatives.

Last year’s event raised more than $40,000 for our deserving beneficiaries.

For the past 12 years, Monarch Place has been offering shelter and support for women and children fleeing violence.

More than 1500 women and 900 children have received support over these

years and represented a panorama of perspectives, cultures, ages, and family situations.

Internationally sponsored Rotary initiatives include supporting projects in South Africa, Mexico, Indonesia and Haiti.

Donations to support “To the Heart of the Matter” are gratefully accepted.

The association also gave out its most inspirational midget, bantam and peewee player awards.

Peewee winners of the Iris Dalzell Award were: Chloe Nottingham, Madison O’Bravac, Troy Bradsen, Harrison Sherley, Stephen StehrSo, Nolan Duncan, Nathan Brajak and u-12 girls’ field lacrosse players Annaleise Meyer and Erica Malcom.

Peyton Lupul was named the most dedicated minor referee.

Tony Malcom won the John Witt Memorial award as coach of the year.

Barry Castagner also received a special award for his long service to the game and the association.

“I have seen really talented swimmers just up and quit. It’s upsetting to watch.

“Swimming has helped me realize and helped me stay relaxed, and helped me perform at school and swimming.”
