Trustee raises conﬂict question BY NIKI HOPE REPORTER

Do school trustees who are members of the same union that the district is negotiating with face a conflict of interest during budget deliberations? Trustee Jim Goring is concerned that even if a trustee with union ties isn’t in conflict, the perception that there could be is enough reason for the district to craft a conflict-of-interest policy. “I felt very uncomfortable because it’s a difficult issue,” Goring told The Record. “I’m not stating that people are being dishonest, … that’s why it’s very difficult. I’m not making any allegations that people are doing things the wrong way, that they are using information incorrectly.” At Tuesday’s board of education meeting, Goring handed trustees a last-minute motion to develop a conflict policy by Nov. 18, and then vote on the policy at its next meeting. Goring told trustees that the board urgently needed to develop a conflict policy for trustees because the district had entered into union contract negotiations with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). The presence of a toxic blob at the Westminster Pier Park site means the entire site is classified high risk even though the contamination is contained to a small part of the property. Doug Walton, manager of risk assessment and remediation for the province’s Ministry of the Environment, said sites aren’t divided into different classifications; one classification applies to an entire site that’s being remediated. The presence of chlorinated solvents in the form of dense non-aqueous phase liquid means the whole site is now classified as a

high-risk site, rather than a low-risk site. Walton stressed that the contaminants are eight metres below the surface and don’t appear to be progressing out to the Fraser River. “It seems to be restricted to this one spot on the city’s property,” he told The Record Wednesday. Future drilling will refine the location of the contamination related to the chlorinated solvents. “Right now, we simply don’t know,” Walton said. A staff report presented to city council on Nov. 8 stated that the area in question is about 750 square metres, which represents about

five per cent of the park property. Walton and another ministry official meet every month or two with representatives from consultants hired by the City of New Westminster to review the work that has been done. “Are we providing formal approvals of any work? No, we are not,” Walton said. Walton said the city, through its consultant, has complied with the requirements of province’s environmental legislation. all received election contributions from CUPE. “We are now in negotiations. We are developing a second set of negotiations,” Goring said. “I feel very uncomfortable sitting in a closed session when I feel there may be some people not considering all of the information available if conflict of interest is there. “I just think we need to consider it since we are in negotiations. The sooner we consider it, the better,” he said. Goring wanted the policy to include guidance on the direct or indirect pecuniary (financial) interest of a trustee, including those whose spouse, parent or children are employed by the district, those who received campaign contributions from an entity that has a financial interest in the district or those who are shareholders in a firm that has financial ties to the district. But some of Goring’s fellow trustees didn’t have the same sense of urgency and opted instead to receive his recommendation as a notice of motion. According to board policy, trustees must provide enough notice for trustees to consider a motion. “Under our rules of order, we give notice of motion,” Janzen said. The board opted against suspending the rules of order and accepting Goring’s last-minute motion. The three Voice New Westminster trustees, Goring, Casey Cook and Lisa Graham, were the only trustees who wanted to discuss the conflict motion that night. “I must admit, I’m getting a little tired of politics by ambush,” Ewen told The Record. As for the current contract negotiations, Ewen said, “No trustees are sitting at the bargaining table for the first time in 30

years.” Ewen said he had been involved with CUPE negotiations in the past but isn’t this time around because his stepson is a CUPE member. Ewen also questioned where exactly conflict of interest ends. “Mr. Goring, in his wisdom, seems to imply that if you get money from unions, it’s bad, but I guess the questions I would ask is what about other conflicts? For example, I’m going to look at Voice filings and see who gave them money,” he said. “Should you have nothing to do with anybody who gave you a financial contribution? How far does one take this?” Conflict of interest surfaced more than a year ago when the district was considering layoffs to offset a $3.1-million deficit. Cook declared a conflict with the district’s budget because his daughter worked for the district. Ewen later also abstained from voting on portions of the budget because his stepson works as a casual custodian and his wife works as a teacher in the district. Ewen initially said he wasn’t in conflict but changed his stance after he sought a legal opinion on the issue. Trustee Brent Atkinson’s daughters also work for the district, though he has maintained that he is not in conflict. The only way a trustee can be challenged on conflict of interest is if an individual files a court action, according to the School Act. Conflict of interest has also caught the attention of the auditor general. In the spring, John Doyle asked that the school district provide financial information, including expense claims for trustees, and details on trustee relationships that could be seen as a conflict of interest. www.twitter.com/nikimhope

– and it’s subject to criticism for violating international humanitarian law, like everyone else. Conflating criticism of Israel with attacks on Jewish people does nothing but spread a chilling effect through legitimate public debate on the issue. But if people are left scared to speak out next time Israel bombs civilians, for fear of being labelled anti-Semitic, then the rhetoric has served its purpose, and there’s no need to violate the charter because we’ll be censoring ourselves.

Cancer tests should be covered

Dear Editor:

This month is Prostate Cancer Month. Men are requested to grow moustaches to bring attention to this male cancer, fatal if not detected in time. This cancer can easily be detected by a simple blood test. However, men have to pay for this test to the amount of $35! I think this is highly unfair. Just imagine if a woman had to pay for a mammogram! There would be a public outcry, and women would revolt, and rightly so. Why this inequity? We are told prostate-specific antigen blood tests are not very reliable. Hogwash, not all mammograms are 100 per cent accurate either. It’s about time men got some backbone and phoned their MLA, and women should support us. After all, men run in the breast cancer marathons. This worn-out excuse has been used too long. Are you listening, Hon. Kevin Falcon?

Time to build a green city

Dear Editor:

I’m mad! Not at the city for hiking the cost of water, sewer, and solid waste utilities, although the fact that our two-person, 1,000 square foot household will foot the same portion of the bill as someone in a less expensive neighbourhood in a large house with eight occupants does rankle. No, I’m mad at us! The residents of New Westminster. We are using water without thinking. We are creating more garbage than anyone has a right to create. And we are flushing our toilets to get rid of a little hair from the hair brush or a small “squirt” before bed that our partner will repeat and flush 20 seconds later. We are paying the price for ignoring our global duty to reduce. As a city we are looking for solutions to reduce what we send to the landfill. Good. As individuals we are filling our homes with “temporary toys” (for kids and adults), going overboard with trinkets

People in apartment buildings will see rent increases as a result of a family of four finding it impossible to 1) live with only one garbage can worth of garbage per week; 2) separate their green garbage out of the general garbage; 3) ration their water consumption responsibly. All the charity work a person does in a year will have less effect on the bottom line for those in need than working together to create a cheap-to-run-and-maintain green city. Let’s get on it. Don’t pick on Sapperton Dear Editor:

Re: Sapperton rail yard isn’t close to residential area, Letters to the editor, The Record, Nov. 10. I have followed with sincere interest and certainly championed the cause of the Quayside community with regards to the train noises, but that came to a full stop this week after their response to the letter written by my fellow Sapperton resident. Apparently a little more “clarification” is indeed required in this matter. While the Sapperton yard is not as near to our homes as what the Quayside residents are currently faced with, I would like to make it perfectly clear that we are already dealing with noise issues of our own. In the summer months we turn the fan up full blast in our room and our sons’ rooms to mask the noise from the trains while we sleep with our windows open. Unfortunately, a fan isn’t an option in the colder winter months when, even with the windows closed, we are still disturbed by the braking, shunting and horns blowing at all hours. I can only imagine how much worse this would be if the rail yard activity is moved to the Sapperton yard. What a shame this issue has dissolved into a “who

has it worse” situation as opposed to everyone working together towards a common goal. Let’s get back on “track” here so we can all focus our efforts on implementing legislation that will be best for everyone in the community of New Westminster as a whole. Campbell was good for B.C. Dear Editor:

When the premier stepped down last week, it was not so much surprising as it was unexpectedly sudden. But for how long can anyone be expected to ask their family to endure the extreme partisanship of B.C. politics and the kind of public exposure the Campbell family have had to endure? Fortunately for B.C., Campbell persevered through it all and endured, and I have no reservation whatsoever in applauding him for his leadership, and especially for his leadership on climate change and the development of B.C.’s abundant renewable green energy resources. The forward-thinking energy policies implemented under Campbell’s leadership have put B.C. back on the road to electricity self-sufficiency and reversed the trend that saw our province relying increasingly on imported coal-fired electricity. Under Campbell’s leadership, B.C.’s aging hydroelectric dams from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, which previous governments neglected and allowed to fall into disrepair, are being refurbished and modernized through a multibillion-dollar reinvestment program that will ensure they are there to produce clean energy for the generations that follow. And thanks to the new B.C. Clean Energy Act, which paves the way for economic growth and job creation by unleashing our full potential in clean energy, B.C. is also on track to become a major exporter of renewable green energy and a leader in power smart technologies, environmental stewardship and climate action. Campbell has left our province in far better shape than the “have-not” province he inherited, and we owe him our gratitude for the determination and tenacity he has shown in service to this province. Like Chrétien, he used his political capital to savagely attack the government’s books and eliminate the deficit. Once that was under control, he could be a benevolent leader, as the

good times rolled and he could hand out new bridges and clinics. We’ve definitely had worse premiers in living memory. Glen Clark almost destroyed his party, Mulroney-style. Bill Vander Zalm was actually hated by a good many people before he became premier, and things just got worse from there. Bill Bennett’s restraint programs almost

provoked a general strike. I suspect history will remember Gordon Campbell more fondly than the current public rage suggests. It will take some time to sort out how bad or good his policies were. under the Environmental Management Act as long as the ministry is notified at the start and at the completion of remediation,” said the ministry’s website. “At many sites, remediation may be routine, the risks posed by the site low, and methods of treatment readily available. With the assistance of capable environmental consultants, such a site can be remediated with very little involvement of the ministry. About 60 per cent of the sites being cleaned up in B.C. are handled this way.” Through the independent remediation process, the consultants investigate various areas and undertake remediation as determined to be necessary. It’s done without any formal approvals from the ministry. “The independent remediation process would account for about one-half of all the sites that are remediated in a given year,” Walton said. “This is nothing unusual.” According to Walton, the province recognizes that the Westminster Pier Park site is a “priority” and is in a prominent location on the Fraser River. “There is a signoff which is done through a certificate of completion,” he said. “Certainly the city has always indicated it will be making application for certificate of completion.” Before signing off on any certification, officials from the environment ministry will review the remediation work that’s taken place at the waterfront site. “The work is going along fine,” Walton said. “It is taking longer than I suspect the

city had imagined.” Because of the independent remediation process being followed, the city hasn’t provided the ministry with any detailed site plans about the remediation that’s taken place. It’s expected those reports would be presented to the ministry in the late spring or early summer of 2011. “At this time, they are proceeding with an independent remediation process,” Walton explained. “That would mean they have not put together their detailed reports for the site.” Until ministry officials have that information in front of them, they can’t put together a detailed full picture about the site. “We don’t have that in hand right now,” Walton said. “Certainly across the site there are a number of areas that have been or continue to be contaminated.” Walton said the “main area of concern” that’s remaining is an area where groundwater has been found to contain a chlorine solvent. It is a dry-cleaning fluid, but a former drycleaning business that was thought to have been the source of the contamination has been ruled out. “This investigation continues,” he said. “It is happening in the weeks ahead.” Some have referred to the chlorinated solvents in the form of dense non-aqueous phase liquid as a toxic blob. Walton said the source of those chemicals and how they ended up in that location is unknown and is part of the ongoing investigation. No information has been

While it may be true that most Canadians prefer their ice sports to involve wearing skates – be it for hockey or figure skating – kids this year in New Westminster are also hurrying hard to the local curling rink in greater numbers than ever. They may not enjoy cleaning their rooms but it turns out quite a few of them like to sweep. Local blogger Shelia Keenan, whose son and husband are both involved with the widely misunderstood sport, was at this season’s first Little Rocks session at the Royal City Curling Club – where kids aged five to 10 have a chance to throw some stones and bust out their brooms – and said “it seemed much busier than last year, maybe 20 or so new curlers”

over the 30 that showed up regularly last season. Rink manager Lesley Hruby said she thinks a certain recent major sporting event held in Vancouver probably has a fair bit to do with this year’s larger turnout, as curling is one of those sports that tends to disappear from a lot people’s radars in the years between the winter Olympics. “I think it really is due the Olympics and kids saw Canada do great in a sport that doesn’t always get a lot of exposure,” said Hruby. “Now we’re getting a really great turnout for both the Little Rock and the Junior levels. It might also help that we have some fairly prominent curlers living here in New West and we host some big events like the Westcoast Curling Classic.” Last month’s fifth annual Westcoast

Curling Classic, where over 30 men’s teams competed for a total purse of $80,000 saw Olympic gold medallist Kevin Martin narrowly defeat current world champion Kevin Koe – both of whom are Canadian – in a heavyweight match held in a city that doesn’t tend to see a lot of head-tohead action between world class athletes. Just as more than a few local kids probably picked up a baseball mitt for the first time thanks to the success of hometown hero Justin Morneau in Major League Baseball, the fact that the Royal City is also home to curling champions such as Sean Geall, Brent Pierce and Bryan Miki probably could also help explain the sudden new interest in playing “chess on ice.” Three years ago, the six-sheet rink also produced the junior men’s provincial champions – Team Wakefield (Jay Wakefield, Chase Martyn, Paul Cseke and

Jamie Danbrook) – and the rink is looking poised to create a new crop of up-andcoming curlers. “It’s great to see and hopefully, once they get a taste of it, they’ll want to keep playing as they get older as well,” said Hrudey. It probably doesn’t hurt that, in these tough economic times, curling is a lot easier on parents’ wallets than Canada’s better known sport that’s played on ice (funny shoes and a broom costing quite a bit less than keeping a growing child in hockey equipment) and it goes without saying that it also comes with a considerably lower risk of injury. The Little Rockers take to the ice every Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. while Juniors (ages 11 to 20) have ice time from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 75 East 6th Ave. Check out www.royalcitycc.com for more.

The event, hosted in partnership with Redken 5th Avenue, NYC, took place in Red Deer, Alberta. It attracted more than

300 attendees and received more than 160 makeover challenge entries. A press release notes that the professional event was designed exclusively for Chatters’ hairstylists to teach the latest hair techniques and styles – and give them a chance to showcase their talent and win prizes.

Looking for stories

The New Westminster Historical Society’s next meeting will focus on the continued search for stories about the Royal Engineers. For a number of years, Jacqueline Gresko and Anita Bonson have sought out the stories of the families of the

Royal Engineers who were in British Columbia in the 1850s and onward. They want to know more about those early residents, specifically about the families that grew and stayed on in the province. In their upcoming presentation, the researchers will bring a collection of stories of the families of the men of the Corps. The focus will be on the Royal Engineers’ children and their lives, including schooling, fun and games and work activities. Gresko and Bonson will also examine the children’s involvement in the community as they grew up, including connections to churches, local organizations, politics, cultural life, and pos-

sibly more. The free presentation is being held on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the New Westminster Public Library. Everyone is invited.

Tailgate tally is high

The Hyack Football Tailgate Auction recently raised $17,000 for the football program. The Hyack Football newsletter notes that 130 supporters attended the event and bid on more than 150 prizes. The night’s big winners included Jeff and Francis Melville, who took home the trip for two to Hawaii that had been donated by Brent Atkinson and Tim Ruane. The newsletter notes that

he New Westminster Chapter of Canadian Parents for French has been busy. The group has already hosted kindergarten Bonjour, Bonne Nuit events at all three French immersion elementary schools – École Herbert Spencer, John Robson and Lord Tweedsmuir. The French storytime takes place in the evening at the schools, and the students wear their PJ’s and enjoy a night of reading en français by older students in the French immersion program. Each kindergarten family received a take-home French book provided by Canadian Parents for French. “It was a wonderful event. The enthusiasm and excitement was palpable in the air,” Tweedsmuir principal Patty Farris said in a press release. “I look forward to other exciting events with Canadian Parents for French.” More exciting events are being planned for the upcoming school year. The site includes government-sourced data about individual facilities – listing elementary schools, preschools and daycare facilities in Metro Vancouver with information such as maximum daycare sizes, satisfaction surveys, test scores, and demographics. Site visitors can write in – anonymously, if they wish – about their experiences or perspectives on a school or daycare. Art exhibitions at New West library

The New Westminster Public Library is displaying a variety of art in November. In the reference department, Martin Jasiak’s show Moments in Time brightens the walls. A press release from the library notes that Jasiak was born in

Poland in a small-town setting that influenced his later love of nature. Encouraged to draw from a young age, Jasiak studied fine arts at Langley Fine Arts and Emily Carr but likes to challenge himself with the sciences.

His bright, surrealistic oil on canvas paintings are inspired by his feelings about nature. On the ramp gallery, members of the Century House Painters display their talents with a colourful sampling of their work in a variety of styles and media.

ooking at recently returned books is a great way to see what others are reading. In the library we often see people perusing the carts of books to be reshelved, hoping to discover a new gem to read. A look at the list of what is sitting on the holds shelf, waiting to be picked up, is even more fascinating. On these shelves are items for which people put their name on a list and were willing to wait for. Here’s what I found on one given day last week. There were 589 items waiting to be picked up. To be expected were new books from bestseller lists. Freedom by Jonathan Franzen was there, as well as his earlier success The Corrections. There’s a thriller by Icelandic mystery writer Indioason Arnaldur as well as all three books by the Swedish sensation Steig Larsson. The latest books from such bestsellers as Lee Child, Robert B. Parker, Nora Roberts and Janet Evanovich are to be expected, as well as new books from award-winning authors – The Long Song by Andrea Levy, whose book Small Island

was so good I’ll read anything she publishes. A few titles are set in foreign locales, such as Camilla Gibb’s The Beauty of Humanity Movement, set in Vietnam, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoot by David Mitchell, a riveting read set in 18th century Japan, and The Man from Beijing by Henning Mankell. And this is just from the fiction collections. There are just as many books from almost every subject area. Travel guides, cookbooks, knitting, politics, biographies and history books. Three that stand out for me are The Happiness Project (Gretchin Rubin), A Thousand Sisters, one woman’s amazing Oprahinspired dedication to help women in the Congo, and Fever: How Malaria has Ruled Human Kind for 500,000 Years. This a snapshot of what is currently waiting to be picked up. This same list next week will have an entirely different and probably just as exciting selection.

Learn about the ‘Royal Engineer children’ OUR PAST

n interesting aspect of the story of the Columbia Detachment of Royal Engineers, stationed in New Westminster from 1859 to 1863, is that many of the men arrived with their wives and children. Others received permission to have their families come out to join them in the colony. This meant that when the Corps was disbanded in 1863, there were a number of “ready-made” families who became instant permanent residents. Once the Corps had disbanded, the men who stayed on received land and many of them contributed to com-

munities throughout the province. There are examples throughout the Fraser Valley, the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, as well as in the Okanagan and the Cariboo. As we follow these people, we often remain focused on the men, the ones sent here in service to Queen Victoria, and the family stories are left out. Much is being done by a number of people to add to the Royal Engineer family stories by documenting and seeking the backgrounds of all the people of this detachment. We have been able to locate many of these folks through cemetery research, and we are always pleased to identify another Royal Engineer or a connection to a name. A couple of years ago, members of the McMurphy family gathered to place a grave marker for Sergeant Major John McMurphy in New Westminster’s Fraser Cemetery. Among several other

connections that we have been able to make, are ones with descendents of Morey, Keary, Hall, Digby, Rylatt, Rowling and even of the commanding officer Richard Clement Moody. Last month at the Historical Society program, Tim Watkins, a re-enactor who portrays the Royal Engineer figure James Lindsay, recounted the background stories that are found by re-enactors in their study and the effect that this kind of personal information has on the interpretation of these men and their families. Two other people are focussing specifically on the women and children connected to the Royal Engineer’s and their descendents, many of whom still live in B.C. Irish bring knowledge to coach exchange

The luck of the Irish is smiling on the North Burnaby Boxing Club. The amateur boxing club, relocated to Rev’s Entertainment Centre at Holdom Avenue earlier this year, is the home for two Northern Ireland champions for the remainder of November. Peter Brady and James Ferrin are part of an international partnership exchange involving SpringboardOpportunities Limited in Ireland and the Aware Society, which has a location in New Westminster. The Springboard programbringstogetheryoung people from Catholic and Protestant areas of Belfast in Northern Ireland and from Dublin in the republic to the south, providing them with opportunities to develop their vocational and personal skills. The homestay program is aimed at bridging the gap between the two countries and mainstream religions that has divided the Irish people for decades. “It’s very hard to get this kind of experience in Belfast because of the recession. Everything is really drying up big time,” said Ferrin, a 21-year-old, four-time champion at 164 pounds. Ferrin, who was studying sports fitness in college back home in Belfast, discovered the exchange program through an advertisement in the local newspaper. “We all will (feel differently),” Ferrin added. The pair coach at the North Burnaby club every Monday to Thursday, with a drop-in on Saturday, and will be on hand until Nov. 18, when they return home following their seven-week stay in Burnaby. But that might not be the end of it. Ferrin has been working with current Canadian junior champion Robert Couzens. The two are in the same weight class and both have their eye on the 2012 Olympics in London, England. “We may cross paths. It may happen,” said Ferrin. “But if it does, we’ll still be friends. But when we step into the ring we won’t.”

The Burnaby Central Wildcats parlayed a second chance into a berth to the provincial AAA boys’ soccer championships. Central, 3-2 losers to Burnaby South in last week’s district semifinal, was awarded the district’s second berth into the BNW/ North Shore zone playoffs when AA Cariboo Hill made it into the championship final. Central and South met again Wednesday and fortune seemed to smile on the Wildcats following a 2-1 shootout win at Burnaby

Junior Central goalkeeper Cody Recsky proved the hero on the day, stopping two consecutive penalty kicks to help give the ’Cats the No. 2 zone berth into the provincials Nov. 25 to 27 in Burnaby. Recsky, who plays with the Burnaby Selects under-16 A Metro team, stopped both Marrion Nzuzi-Luaka and Tyler Leonard from the penalty spot. Rajan Kooner slotted Central’s fourth goal in the shootout to clinch the final provincial berth. After a scoreless first half, South got the go-ahead goal from Leonard with a solid strike that

beat a diving Recsky to the far post. The goal looked like it might be all that the Rebels needed. South keeper Oscar Ramirez was Johnny-on-the-spot when needed, and was lucky when Mark Baldisimo missed a glorious opportunity on an out swinging corner kick later in the half. Leonard had a chance to score a second goal in the latter half, but Recsky managed to corral the hard shot. Central’s game-tying marker came on a penalty shot goal from Kooner with less than a minute to go in the game.

In overtime, Josh Hardy had what would have been the goahead goal for Central, on a great cross from Jeff Raman, called back on a suspect offside call in the second period of OT. “The pressure’s off. That’s finally done with,” added Recsky after the match with South. Central might well feel fortunate to be in the position they are heading towards the provincials, having survived elimination on two separate occasions by the skin of their teeth. “At least half our team are Grade 12s. They wanted to win before they graduated.”

The Burnaby North Vikings captured both the senior boys’ and girls’ district volleyball titles Wednesday. The Viking girls swept a well-supported Cariboo Hill Charger team in straight sets, while the North boys had to go to four sets before defeating Burnaby South 3-1 at Burnaby North Secondary. The North girls won 2517, 25-18, 25-15. Ilaina Hecimovic and Layla Balooch were named the North all-stars, while Mina Kilburn and Milica Bjelica were the medalwinners for Cariboo. “Honestly, if we play the way we played today, we’ll be unstoppable,” said Hecimovic on North’s chances at next week’s Lower Mainland AAAA championships Nov. 18 and 20. Bjelica praised the hundreds of Charger fans that came to North to watch them. “It’s a big deal and our team really appreciates it,” said Bjelica. “It’s the first time to the Mainlands for our year. It’s a big opportunity.” The North boys were led by all-star power Preston Wong, who had 16 individual kills and two service aces to lead the Vikings to a 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 win over South. “We definitely wanted it really bad. The last time we played (South), we won in five sets. We knew we had to play even harder to take it,” said Wong. Lorenzo Robiso contributed seven blocks for North, including three in the all-important final set. Florian Zhou was named North’s other allstar. Mark Dallas and Alex Pang earned the all-star nods for South. The Lower Mainland AAA boys’ volleyball championship will be held at St. George’s School on Nov. 16 and 17. “I’m pretty optimistic. We have a pretty strong group,” Wong added.

It wasn’t Burnaby South’s day in zone soccer playdowns this week. South lost both the AAA senior and junior boys’ zone titles to a Sentinel Spartans squad, both by one-goal margins. The senior Rebels fell 10 to the West Vancouver school in a provincial qualifying match in Burnaby on Monday. The juniors lost 2-1 in a shootout to Sentinel at Sutherland Turf on Wednesday. In the junior zone final, midfielder Alban Hodo opened the scoring for South after just five minutes gone in the second half. Sentinel answered 10 minutes later and the game

went into overtime with the score tied at 1-1. Matthew Shannik, who leads South in scoring with 14 goals this season, had a glorious chance careen off the crossbar in the match. Rebel keeper Alex Morraquin made a number of spectacular saves to force the shootout. South lost the match on penalty kicks. Earlier, South won the Burnaby/NewWestminster junior boys’ soccer banner with a 5-3 victory in overtime over Byrne Creek Nov. 4. Byrne Creek held a 3-1 lead at halftime on goals by Filip Radovic, Daniel Hurmer and Sameer Aslami. South rallied to tie the contest 3-3 and then scored

a goal in each of the two overtime periods to winner the district banner. Christian Guzman and Shannik, with a pair of markers, scored to send the game into extra time. Tyler Huguet and Louis Zhou tallied in OT. “I told them don’t be disappointed. Wait until next year when you have a chance to prove yourself at a higher level,” said Byrne Creek head coach Sava Miljanic, who praised his boys for a fine season. “It was an excellent outing. Last year, we had a not so good season, but we finished second and beat (Burnaby) North 2-0 in the regular season. After the first half, we were really confident we were really going to win.”

Freshies sixth in Charlotte

The Burnaby Mountain Selects made it to the semifinals of the rising stars A division at the Charlotte Fall Classic field lacrosse tournament in North Carolina Nov. 1. New Westminster’s Sean Fitzsimmons, Hayden Goss, Jordan McKenzie, Connor Robinson and Mathew Sweeney helped the freshmen elite team to a 3-2 record, including an 8-4 over Old North State in the under-15 quarter-finals. Burnaby Mountain lost in the semifinals 8-6 to eventual champion Team Florida. The freshmen Selects were ranked fourth overall after a pair of wins in the seeding round.

Burnaby Mountain edged the No. 6 Cougar Selects 3-2 in its opening match. They also got by the second-ranked Iroquois team from New York State 7-6. The Selects were the lone club from Canada at the 60-team tournament. In addition to the competition, Select players took time to tour the campuses of the University of North Carolina and Division 1 lacrosse national champion Duke University. Before heading home, the tourists also made a stop at Bank of America Stadium, the home of the NFL Carolina Panthers. They also caught up on school work with three hours of study on the trip.

Ray served in the Royal Navy in war time. After immigrating in 1957, Ray worked with VPD as a ﬁngerprint technician, and in later years as ofﬁce manager at the Richmond Review Newspaper. For many years Ray worked tirelessly with Boy Scouts in both Britain and in Richmond, BC. In his retirement, he was an active volunteer in New Westminster, working with Community Policing and Century House. For many years Ray served Holy Trinity Cathedral faithfully as Warden and in the choir. A Memorial Service will be held at Holy Trinity, 514 Carnarvon Street, New Westminster on November 17, 2010 at 11 AM. Preparations for the 14th Annual COBE (Celebration of Business Excellence Awards) are in the final stages. This is always a much enjoyed and sold-out event.

Affectionately referred to as the “Oscars for Business”, this exciting evening begins with a cocktail reception and appetizers, followed by a delicious buffet, complemented with fine wine – then the much anticipated presentation of Awards. This year’s event will be held at the Inn at the Quay on the evening of November 17th. Earlier in the year, The Record Newspaper called for Nominations and published Nomination Forms for two months. In response, the Chamber office received Nominations from the community in the following categories: New Business of the Year, Home Based Business of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Large Business of the Year, Community Spirit, Customer Service and Business Person of the Year. All Nominations, their supporting information and blank score sheets were then turned over to five independent and impartial judges whose job it was to judge each Nominee based on specific criteria. When each of the judges returned these completed score sheets to the Chamber, the results were combined with those of the other four judges and the winners thus determined. The winners will be announced at the Banquet – Even the judges will not know who the winners are until that time! To cap off the event, the COBE (Celebration of Business Excellence) Award for Lifetime Achievement, Sponsored by the Record Newspaper will also be presented on this special night.
