New Westminster firefighters will be trading in their work gear for hockey sticks when they take to the ice against the Vancouver Canucks Alumni at the sixth Hydrant Cup. The teams will vie for the sixth Hydrant Cup at Queen’s Park Arena on Friday, Nov. 19. The biannual hockey game is a fundraiser for the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society, which raises funds that it disperses to many charities. “We are hoping to fill the building,” said firefighter Paul Adamson, who is helping to plan the event. “Capacity is about 4,200. Over 3,000 would be perfect.” The fun gets underway long before the puck drops at 7 p.m. The City of New Westminster

Canucks tickets and autographed Canucks jerseys are among the items up for grabs in the silent auction. “It’s a fun family event,” Adamson said. Tickets will be available through schools and can also be purchased at the Glenbrook fire hall at Sixth and McBride, and the Moody Park and Queen’s Park arenas. The Vancouver Canucks Alumni roster is fluid but is expected to include the likes of Jyrki Lumme, Cliff Ronning, Paul Reinhart, Mike Brown and Moe Lemay. The New Westminster Fire and Rescue

The mounds of wooden piles and beams, the piles of rocks that will prevent the park from being washed into the river, the muddy terrain and ongoing construction make it hard to envision what the future Westminster Pier Park will look like – but that’s just what city officials and the project manager attempted to do when taking local media on a tour of the construction site on Friday. Project manager Dugal Purdie said about half of the 3.2-hectare (nine-acre) site will be fully completed in Phase 1. Although the park will only be fully completed from Sixth Street to Fourth Street, residents will still be able to access the park site as they travel from Fourth Street to Elliott Street. “We are going to develop all the land,” Purdie said. “We can do that for much less cost than the decking components.” A progress report on the project will be presented at city council’s meeting on Monday. A recent presentation on the park’s design included 3-D images of the park. “Construction drawings are out for tender at the moment,” Purdie said. “These 3-Ds are very easy to visualize what is coming.” To date, about $5.1 of the $25.1milion budget has been spent on soil remediation, steel pipe

Service, which includes some firefighters who’ve played a high calibre of hockey, will put its number 1 game on the ice. “It’s a competitive team,” Adamson said. “It’s about entertaining the fans.” Suiting up for the firefighters’ team is New Westminster resident Bill Ranford, a Stanley Cup champion goalie with the Edmonton Oilers in 1988 and 1990. He’s expected to play defence for the firefighters team. “This is our number 1 fundraiser of the year,” Adamson said. “This will be bringing in the most money. We are hoping to raise $20,000. Remembrance Day Ceremonies The 2010 Remembrance Day Ceremonies will be held on Thursday, November 11 at the Royal Westminster Regiment Armoury. Participants are requested to assemble in the Armoury at 9:30 am for the Memorial Service which will begin at 10:00 am. Doors to the Armoury will be closed at 9:45 am. The memorial address will be delivered by His Grace the Duke of Westminster. Overﬂow seating will be provided at Queens Avenue United Church. The Church will open at 8:30 am and the public will be able to watch and listen to the Ceremonies taking place in the Armoury. Following the ceremonies, there will be a parade to the Cenotaph at the front of City Hall. At the Cenotaph, the two minutes of silence will be observed at 11 am. Royal Avenue will be closed from Eighth Street to McBride Boulevard between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. No trafﬁc will be able to access the Patullo Bridge from Royal Avenue between those hours. Eastbound trucks using this route will be diverted to the Port Mann Bridge via Front Street.

American tour. “First responders don’t get enough respect … and I’m proud to say first responders saved my butt,” said McLachlan. McLachlan told the story of how when she was pregnant for the first time, she didn’t know she was with child until she passed out in her bathroom, but not before calling 911. “They took me to Lions Gate Hospital and saved my life,” McLachlan said. De Genova, the driving force behind Honour House, said there were two poignant moments during this two-year-plus journey to get the facility built. The first occurred when De Genova and retired Canadian Gen. Rick Hillier met in a suite during a Canucks game to talk about

making Honour House a reality. Hillier had been asked by De Genova to be the patron for the facility. Hillier replied by flipping a challenge coin back to the former Vancouver politician. “He issued a challenge to me to get Honour House built,” said De Genova. “Today, I can say we have met that challenge.” The second moment came when De Genova was on a street corner trying to raise money in the Helmets for Heroes campaign. “We’re standing out in the rain when a homeless man came up and said ‘These guys helped me before, and I want to help them now.’ He’s holding all the money he has, it was 36 cents, and it really touched our hearts,” said De Genova.

Orange Room Rotary marks a century set to close Service club helps support charities in New Westminster

One of New Westminster’s most innovative restaurants will close its doors for good this Sunday. The Orange Room, at 620 Sixth St., served unique tapas dishes with a mix of art and culture for almost two years. But a combination of high rent, overhead and the HST meant running the uptown eatery proved too much, and now a dozen workers will be looking for new jobs come Nov. 8. “We were told three weeks ago,” said executive chef Darin Wall. “We had our high points here, but with things like the HST coming in, there was a massive dip in business and that really hurt.” Wall said the orderly shutdown of the restaurant meant employees were paid out in full, including severance. “We were treated with pure class,” said Wall, who’s already lined up his next gig, working in the kitchen of the renovated Horizons Restaurant on Burnaby Mountain, set to open on Nov. 24. On the home webpage of the restaurant, www. theorangeroomtapas.com, the closing is noted at the top of the page. “Well, that’s it. After a little over a year-and-a-half, we have to say good-bye. We’ll stay open until Sunday, November 7, at our usual hours. Depending on staff availability we may open for brunch the following weekend, November 13 and 14. We’ll keep you posted. “Thanks to everyone for their patronage. We’ve enjoyed serving you and hopefully you’ll be able to drop in and say good-bye!” Wall said the restaurant will be offering some discounts this weekend, and he’s encouraging people to come in and give the Orange Room one last try.

They toil quietly but effectively, and they’re now celebrating 100 years of service in Canada. Rotary International celebrated its first century of service on Nov. 3, with Canada Post issuing a stamp featuring a person sporting the traditional Rotary vest. “What a great honour for Rotary,” said Don Michiel, president of the noon hour Rotary Club of New Westminster. “We’re pretty proud of the honour and it’s great recognition

for what Rotary does in Canada and abroad.” Michiel, a retired sales staffer at The Record, has been involved with Rotary for the past 15 years, including a stint as president in Tsawwassen. Michiel was appointed Rotary Club of New Westminster president on July 1. “I think the enduring legacy of Rotary is that while other service clubs have peaks and valleys, Rotary has continued to grow,” said Michiel. “We’re continuing to do important things in the communities we service.” In addition to operating a seniors’ tower near McBride Boulevard and Tenth Avenue which houses more than 100 seniors, the organization is involved in many local charitable

Cops seek suspect in 7-Eleven robbery New Westminster police are looking for a robber who held up a convenience store early Thursday morning. Just after midnight, police responded to a 911 call saying the 7-Eleven store on Sixth Street had been robbed. The robbery suspect is described as a white man, 6-2, who was wearing a thick winter jacket, black jeans and a white bandana. The man produced a kitchen knife and demanded money and cigarettes. The man was last seen heading towards the rear of the store, where police believe he escaped in a car. Anybody with infor-

In terms of the bigger picture, Michiel said it’s important to note that the first Canadian club was the Winnipeg Rotary Club, which was founded by P.A.C. McIntyre. The Winnipeg club was the first officially chartered club outside the U.S. and marked Rotary’s transformation from a national to an international organization. The big push internationally for Rotary is the eradication of polio. Michiel said Rotary has raised more than $1.2 billion worldwide toward that goal, with $350 million being donated by the Bill Gates Foundation. Premier Gordon Campbell’s new press secretary still has a job despite her boss’s decision to resign. New Westminster native Belle Puri, appointed last week as Campbell’s new press secretary, said the news was surprising in some ways. “There’s not a dull day in B.C. politics,” Puri said on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s certainly been an emotional roller coaster.” Puri said she didn’t know about Campbell’s resignation when she was appointed, but the premier’s office left her a message shortly before Campbell’s 11:30 a.m. press conference. “I missed the call,” Puri said in an e-mail. “When I checked my messages – I could speculate but didn’t know anything for sure.” Puri was actually in her old stomping grounds when the announcement

was made. “I was in the CBC newsroom tidying up some things,” she said. “It was very interesting to be on the other side.” Puri’s old CBC colleagues did try to pry the information out of her, but she didn’t know anything for sure before 11:30. “I watched and listened like everyone else,” said Puri. While her appointment is a political appointment, it is also connected to the premier’s office, no matter who’s in charge. “This is still a great opportunity for me,” she said. “No regrets.” As for the future, Puri said she’s looking forward to working the upcoming leadership conference and the inevitable jockeying as the Liberals look for their new leader and Puri’s new boss. “It’s just so fascinating,” she said. “I still feel like I felt before this announcement.”

The two later met for about 20 minutes in the mayor’s office at city hall to talk about the city’s plans for its downtown and waterfront. “He was very instrumental in getting everything passed for the pier,” he said. Wright said it’s hard for anyone to leave political office if they feel they have more to contribute and projects they want to see completed. Campbell said it’s clear that government initiatives are being overshadowed because the public debate is focused on one person. “It’s time for a new person to lead. I am asking the party to move as quickly as possible to organize a leadership convention. I intend to ensure a smooth and orderly transition. My goal is to return to public attention to what is important to British Columbians – their jobs, their families and how government can best support them,” he said. “That is what the decision on the HST was all about. I hope that my announcement today will allow British Columbians to move forward and fully consider the HST and the alternative on their merits between now and September 2011.” B.C. for his many years of public service and for the contribution he has made to British Columbia. “Premier Campbell made the right decision today. It’s become increasingly clear the B.C. Liberals have broken trust with the people they were elected to serve. No issue shows that more clearly than the HST,” she said in a released statement. “But we must also remember that all B.C. Liberals played a part in the HST deception. All B.C. Liberals played a part in the slashing of public services, in the growth of social inequality we’ve seen in B.C. over the past decade. The people of this province need someone to stand up for their issues, to address concerns about our economy, society and environment and the issues that matter to their families.”

Traffic can be a dirty word, but the folks at the New Westminster Environmental Partners want to clean it up. The group of active and greencentric New Westminster residents, which has lobbied for sustainable policies at city hall, is hosting an Urban Transportation Forum on Nov. 9, 7 p.m. at the Douglas College Student Union lounge. “Traffic is important to New Westminster because a lot of our traffic is thru traffic,” New Westminster Environmental Partners president Patrick Johnstone said.

Roughly 450,000 vehicles travel through the city Monday through Friday. There are two major projects being considered that could significantly increase the flow of traffic along East Columbia and Front streets in New Westminster: replacement of the Pattullo Bridge and the new North Fraser Perimeter Road. Johnstone would like to see more focus on providing alternative modes of transportation. “I wish they’d have the same willingness to spend to get the Evergreen Line,” Johnstone said. The Nov. 9 meeting will feature three speakers. Former New Westminster city

councillor Jerry Dobrovolny, director of transportation for the City of Vancouver, will discuss how the Olympics and separated bike lanes are helping to make Vancouver the “Greenest City in the World” by 2020. Joe Zaccaria, a sustainable transportation advocate from South Fraser OnTrax, will present some facts from the south-of-Fraser region, including options to decrease traffic. Coun. Jonathan Cote will talk about how urban design and form affect sustainable transportation. The New Westminster Environmental Partners will hold its annual general meeting after the discussion. The room is silent, the hush broken only by the soft strains of orchestral string music in the background and the gentle scratching of pencils and charcoal on paper. A half-dozen artists are grouped in a semi-circle facing the small platform where a model holds a series of poses, her light blue sundress swishing softly as she moves. Some are smiling. Others are wearing frowns of concentration. But each seems caught in the spell of the moment. This is a Heritage Life Drawing Society gathering at the Dance With Me Studio on Front Street. The non-profit group is hoping to find more local artists to come join in their regular Sunday evening gatherings. “We see a large number of artists, but it’s hard to get a consistent turnout,” explains Gillian Wright, taking time out from her work at the easel to chat about the group. This, as it happens, is a Monday afternoon – not a regular gathering, but a specially called meeting to give their Record visitors a chance to see the group in action. As the artists work, Wright explains how a usual gathering

works. First, she notes, the model will hold a series of short poses – five one-minute poses and five two-minute poses. These are so the artists can work on “gesture drawing,” with quick strokes. “It’s kind of like when you do a warm-up for exercise,” Wright says, noting it encourages artists to be “freer and easier” with their work and not fuss about details. As the session goes on, the model will hold poses for increasingly longer stretches of time – five minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes. Then, at the end of the session, whatever time is left will be devoted to one long stretch of time for artists to work – usually about an hour, divided into two 25-minute sessions, with a break for the model and the artists in the middle. There’s no instructor, and it’s not a class: The whole idea is to give the artists a chance to work on their life drawing skills. “With life drawing, it’s something you can practise every week,” Wright says. “It’s exercising your hand-eye coordination, which is important to all artists. It doesn’t matter what your discipline is.” The artists in the room today come from a range of backgrounds. Shelley Rothenburger – who today happens to be on the platform, pursuing her other job as an artist’s model – is an artist and art instructor whose courses have been taken by a number of the artists in the room. She also teaches art at New Westminster Secondary School. Tom Morgan is a now-retired

Now, he’s getting back to painting full-time. He’s found the group to be rewarding, he says – he loves the relaxed environment and the spacious room the dance studio provides for them. And, he says, he’s finding that he takes much of the work he accomplishes at the Sunday evening sessions and uses it for his oil paintings later. “Drawing is the basis of painting,” he points out. “The better your drawing is, the better your painting turns out, usually. The stuff you learn from drawing, especially figure drawing, is irreplaceable.” Joann Heringer took one of Rothenburger’s portraiture classes last year and got drawn into the Heritage Life Drawing group through a neighbour. “I really, really feel that it’s really helped my drawing,” she says. “I was really good at landscape, but I like to put some life in my paintings.” Davinder Brar, who’s been coming to the group’s sessions for six or eight months, has a background in video game animation

and comic books. Why we should remember

e must remember. If we do not, the sacrifice of those 100,000 Canadian lives will be meaningless. They died for us, for their homes and families and friends, for a collection of traditions they cherished and a future they believed in; they died for Canada. The meaning of their sacrifice rests with our collective national consciousness; our future is their monument. (Heather Robertson, A Terrible Beauty, The Art of Canada at War, Toronto, Lorimer, 1977.) These wars touched the lives of Canadians of all ages, all races, all social classes. Fathers, sons, daughters, sweethearts were killed in action, were wounded. Many who returned were forever changed. Those who stayed in Canada also served – in factories, in voluntary service organizations, wherever they were needed. Yet, for many of us, war is a phenomenon viewed through the lens of a television camera or a journalist’s account of battles fought in distant parts of the world. For those of us who were born during peacetime, all wars appear to be far removed from our daily activities. As Canadians, we often take for granted our current way of life, our freedom to participate in cultural and political events and our right to live under a government of our choice. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms in our constitution ensures that all Canadians enjoy protection under the law. The Canadians who went off to war in distant lands went in the belief that such rights and freedoms were being threatened. In remembering their service and their sacrifice, we recognize the tradition of freedom they fought to preserve. These men and women had faith in the future and, by their acts, gave us the will to preserve peace for all time. On Remembrance Day, we acknowledge the courage and gallantry of those who served their country.

Why we wear the poppy W

hy was the poppy chosen as the symbol of remembrance for Canada’s war dead? The poppy, an international symbol for those who died in war, also had international origins. A writer first made the connection between the poppy and battlefield deaths during the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th century, remarking that fields that were barren before battle exploded with the blood-red flowers after the fighting ended. Lieut-Col. John McCrae, the Canadian doctor who wrote the poem In Flanders Fields, made the same connection 100 years later, during the First World War, and the scarlet poppy quickly became the symbol for soldiers who died in battle. Prior to the First World War, few poppies grew in Flanders. During the tremendous bombardments of that war, the chalk soils became rich in lime from rubble, allowing ‘popaver rhoeas’ to thrive.

A few years after the war, an American, Moina Michael, was working in a New York City YMCA canteen when she started wearing a poppy in memory of the millions who died on the battlefield. During a 1920 visit to the United States, a Frenchwoman, Madame Guerin, learned of the custom. On her return to France, she decided to use handmade poppies to raise money

for the destitute children in war-torn areas of the country. In November 1921, the first poppies were distributed in Canada.

In Flanders Fields. . .

We remember our veterans for their sacrifices

he famous lines by Lt-Col. John McCrae, scrawled during the Battle of Ypres, have become enshrined in the innermost thoughts and hearts of all soldiers who hear them. John McCrae was their voice. The poem circulated as a folk song, by word of mouth and all who hear it are deeply touched. The poem speaks of Flanders fields, but the subject is universal – the fear of the dead that they will be forgotten, that their death will have been in vain. Remembrance, as symbolized by the poppy, is our eternal answer which belies that fear. Sadly, McCrae died of pneumonia at Wimereux near Boulogne, France on January 28, 1918 when he was 44 years old. His words, however, are immortal.

Female comics make ’em laugh in New West THE LIVELY CITY JULIE MACLELLAN

his first item comes courtesy of my lovely colleague Janaya Fuller-Evans, who served as a guest judge for the recent Laff Riot Girls Funniest New Female Comic competition right here in New West – and loved it. Here’s Janaya: Barbra Streisand, eat your heart out. There’s a new funny girl in town. Wanda Roberts won the Laff Riot Girls’ 2010 Funniest New Female Comic in B.C. Competition on Oct. 21 at Lafflines Comedy Club. The competition for female comics with less than three years full-time experience is a signature event for the local comedy group. As one of the judges for the final round of the competition, I was lucky enough to catch Wanda’s act, along with the other 14 finalists. What stood out for me

was Wanda’s pacing – one great bit after another – which made it difficult to breathe between chortles and guffaws. And anyone who has ever known a teenager could well appreciate her hilarious commentary on raising two of them. The other judges agreed, and Wanda took home first prize, which included $500 cash, a suitcase and a BCAA road kit. Second prize went to Lauren McGibbon, who had me nearly breathless as well with her description of the “B.S.” chain, as opposed to the food chain. The bit tied up nicely with a description of a beleaguered Tim Hortons employee that was just perfect. Rachel Burns came in third with her awesome nerdy girl intro, and a fantastic bit about ineffective self-defence techniques. Amy Wilding won the Most Improved Comic award, decided by Laff Riot Girls’ founder Ardell Brophy-Fitzpatrick. Her impressions of her back and forth with her father, including some odd advice about a potato, were a highlight for me. There was also some inventive use of Tina

Turner lyrics (which obviously stayed with me – I found myself humming What’s Love Got to Do With It? the next day.) Actually, Amy is probably the comic I’d most like to see perform again. If this is her at “Most Improved,” I can’t wait to see what’s next for her. The other 10 performers – Margo Prentice, Teresa Trovato, Karin Koshack, Lesley O., Jules, Shayla Gillis, Linda Feuerhelm, Jessica Rangel, Jessica Crane and Leah Howie – were also fantastic. What made the winners stand out, in my opinion, was a careful balance between confident ease and engaging energy. The competition was MC’d by Laff Riot Girl Lee Ann Keple, and previous winner Jane Stanton headlined the event. My fellow judges were Brophy-Fitzpatrick; Rona Goodman, a local event planner; and promoter Trigger, with Girlgig Productions. Overall, a hilarious evening. – Janaya Fuller-Evans

And yes, that’s Hot l Baltimore – the scene is the lobby of a rundown hotel that has lost the “e” from its marquee. A synopsis of the play – which was written by Lanford Wilson – explains that the residents, young and old, meet and interact with each other during the course of a day. “The drama is of passing events in their lives, of everyday encounters and of the human comedy, with conversations often overlapping into a contrapuntal musical flow,” it notes. “In the resulting mosaic, each character emerges clearly and perceptively defined.” Watt is directing the production, along with Denton Winn. It also features Winn, Seth Gordon Little, Csilla Markus, Tatiana Robinson, Steve Kroeber, Desiree Zantolas, Lauren Martin, B.J., Michelle Sewell, Desmond Hussey, Chris Lomas and Valeska Gonzalez. Screen success

A belated thanks to the Arts Council of New Westminster for yet another successful offering in the Last Mondays at the Movies series. (I’ve blogged about this already, but here it is again for the print world.) The Oct. 25 screening was, as you’ll likely know, Gunless – William

Phillips’ Canadian comedy about a notorious American gunslinger who escapes death only to find himself in (gasp!) Canada, where he just can’t get no satisfaction on the gunfighting front. It stars Paul Gross (of Due South, Passchendaele and Men With Brooms fame) and features a cast of Canadian faces that will be familiar to many – Graham Greene and Callum Keith Rennie not the least among them. Gunless pleased the crowd at the Massey screening – as well it should have, what with its fine combination of great scenery (thanks, Osoyoos), terrific acting and an abundance of humor that made it a fresh approach to the Western genre. The Last Mondays fun will continue at Massey this fall. Coming up this month it’s Babies. A look at the history of the cenotaph OUR PAST

bridge. In 1950, after the end of yet another world war, a new roll of honour was added to the cenotaph at that location. The early 1950s brought a number of changes in the Royal City, one of them being a new city hall on Royal Avenue, up the hill from the previous one downtown. The new building was opened in late 1953, and the cenotaph was moved from the Pattullo Bridge location in time to be used that Remembrance Day. It still stands in that location, now in the Millennium Plaza. A unique feature of the New Westminster cenotaph

is that the bronze statue of “the unknown soldier” surmounting the granite is based on a real local person. The model for the figure was Paul Corrigan who, having returned from nearly five years in France in the First World War, was asked to pose after “a big shot from Ottawa” failed to show up to model for it. Paul later married Maud Corrigan, city councillor from 1955 to 1966. When you go to the cenotaph to remember those who have served, think as well of its past. “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

was ready for a very proud and emotional unveiling of New Westminster’s cenotaph. The monument, with a granite base and bronze statue on top, was unveiled as part of a large formal ceremony at Leopold Place. This location today is at the corner of Columbia at McBride Boulevard, in the large open area on the west side of McBride, renamed Canada Place in 1927. The cenotaph was at that location from 1922 to 1938, but with the construction of the new Pattullo Bridge and a new set of road approaches, it had to be moved. The new site was at the north end of the new

his coming Thursday will be Remembrance Day, a day on which people around the world gather at cenotaphs, military cemetery markers and other locations. The location that has been used most in New Westminster is in front of city hall, where the cenotaph has been located

since 1953. The area has only been a formal plaza for about a decade. Before that, people attending Remembrance Day ceremonies gathered on the front lawn of city hall. But where was the cenotaph prior to this? In 1919, the first anniversary of the end of the First World War was marked with two minutes of silence. During those two minutes, people stopped whatever they were doing, and streetcars and other activities halted. In 1921, a campaign was mounted in New Westminster to raise funds for a cenotaph. Perfection is just two conference games away for the Simon Fraser University men’s soccer team. The 16-0-0 Clan played Seattle Pacific University Thursday (after Record deadlines) and then finishes up the season at home against St. Martin’s University on Saturday. If successful, SFU would become the first non-American team to ever win a NCAA conference title. They would also be the first such team to win a championship in their inaugural season, a potential record that would be hard to match. Last season, SFU posted a 15-3-0 record and went into the NAIA national championship tournament ranked fifth overall. This season, SFU’s historic debut in the NCAA DivisionIIGreatNorthwest Athletic Conference, the focus of Clan head coach Alan Koch was on the process and not wins and losses. “I don’t think, to be honest, we thought about how good our record would be. We knew we had a good team, we just had to go out and prove it,” said the third-year skipper. “We have a great team. We have a lot of talent. Guys are willing to play for each other and the more they play for each other, the more it developed a killer instinct to win.” That drive was evident in two key overtime wins

The first was a 3-2 win over Seattle Pacific. Clan captain Helge Neumann tied the score with five minutes left to play.

The other match saw Max Baessato boot home a goal that knotted the score 1-1 against St. Martin’s. On both occasions, SFU came back to win the game in extra time. “It’s an exciting way to finish the season,” said

Koch. With many off last year’s roster returning for another season, Koch brought a handful of natural freshman onboard who have fitted right in. “Recruiting-wise, we had to be careful to find

the right pieces to the puzzle and I think we hit it spot on,” Koch said. The play of first-year local players Carlo Basso, Gagan Josan and Derrick Bassi has been telling. Basso currently leads all team scoring with eight goals and 19 total points. Gagan has started in all but two of the team’s games to date and is sixth in scoring with four goals. Bassi, a member of the Canadian national u-20 team, has started in all 16 matches for the Clan this year. Bassi’s two goals have both been game-winners. Another first-year freshman, Joseph Martin, has scored a team-high three game-winning tallies coming off the bench. “They are young players with maturity and different experiences,” said Koch. That will come in handy as the Clan attempts to make history with every new fixture it plays in. In just its second year of probation in the NCAA, SFU is ineligible for postseason play in the Great Northwest conference. The Clan will also hope to make the most of its No. 1 ranking at the Association of Independent Institutions championships next week. A title there will earn SFU a berth into a final small college national championship tournament. The last time SFU won an NAIA soccer title was in 1983. ◗SFU Page 24

The Burnaby South Rebels continued their giant-killing ways, upsetting undefeated league champion Burnaby Central Wildcats 3-2 at Burnaby Lake West Wednesday. The win sent the Rebels through to the district championship final against the Cariboo Hill Chargers on Friday. The game was played after Record deadlines. The Chargers defeated the Burnaby Mountain Lions 1-0 in a shootout after the two teams played to a scoreless draw in regulation time at Cariboo Oval. Charger keeper Riley Wray was instrumental in the win, making two big saves in the penalty kick shootout. At Burnaby Lake, South pounced on the Wildcats early,

scoring all three goals in the opening half and then hung on against Central, which rallied despite being down a man for all of the second half. Rayhaan Ali opened the scoring, heading down a cross from the left side by Ismil Golshan that beat Central keeper Ryan Parmar to the near post. Soon after, Faisal Arif took a free kick from 25 yards out and bent the ball over the wall and saw it skip through the hands of Parmar for South’s second goal. The Rebels then capitalized on a second free kick after Arif was taken down just outside the box. Tyler Leonard took the kick, which was stopped by Parmar, but the ensuing rebound fell to the foot of Jacy Zerb, who tapped it into a gaping net. Central, a man down after a brief scuffle on the far touchline,

scored just before halftime on an opportunistic goal by Josh Hardy. The Wildcats then stepped up play in the final half, looking far the more organized team despite playing with just 10 men for the remainder of the match. Amar Omerovic narrowed the deficit to 3-2, finishing off a through ball from teammate Ivan Mrdjen after South was stripped of the ball at midfield. But try as they might, Central could not find the equalizer. The difference was South keeper Oscar Ramirez, who stifled any remaining chances by the Wildcats, including a fine chance from Rajan Kooner to Geordie Penman that was well saved. “The sun was pretty harsh,” said Ramirez. “But, I knew we would pull things out. I knew our team was good enough.” Backup keeper C.J. Roydhouse

said it better. “That’s what we wanted. We wanted to reach the highest we could go. At the beginning of the season, we lost three games in a row and we thought if we wanted to do that, we had to be serious. And that’s what we did,” said Roydhouse. “Those first couple of goals got us going.” South will now play Sentinel in the AAA zone qualifying match at Burnaby Lake West on Monday, beginning at 3 p.m. Central earned a reprieve and was named BNW #2 on the strength of its superior league record after Cariboo Hill’s win over Mountain. The Wildcats will face the No. 2 North Shore school, also at Burnaby Lake, on Monday. Cariboo will meet the North Shore AA champion at Sutherland Turf on Nov. 10 at 3:30 p.m.

The Burnaby North Vikings claimed top spot in both the boys’ and girls’ high school district volleyball this week. The maroon and white finished with undefeated records in both divisions, including a regular season title-winning victory of Cariboo Hill by the Viking girls on Wednesday. Led by junior star Layla Balooch, the North girls defeated the host Chargers 3-1 in a match with firstplace implications. The 15-year-old Balooch, a two-year under-16 provincial team member, had 11 kills and 21 total winners in the match. North defeated Cariboo 25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 25-17. The loss dropped the Chargers to third place overall behind runner-up Burnaby Central. After a relatively routine first set for North, Cariboo began to assert itself in the second behind three kills and two stuff blocks by Mina Kilburn. The Chargers never trailed en route to a win in the third set. Milica Bjelica helped Cariboo with seven total kills. But Balooch opened the fourth set with a 10-1 service and kept North in front with five winners at the net. “It’s nice to have some young club players coming up. It’s nice to think our team will be getting stronger and more focused,” said North coach Moyra Ditchfield. The North boys had little trouble dispatching Cariboo in straight sets. Preston Wong nailed five of his 11 kills in a 2511 opening set. Lorenzo Robiso added one kill and six individual blocks for the Vikings second unit that played most of the remainder of the game. The New Westminster Secondary School girl’s field hockey team won the Burnaby/NewWestminster girl’s field hockey banner for a second straight year. Emily Skelton scored the game’s only goal in New Westminster’s 1-0 win over Burnaby South in the final last month. New Westminster then

moved on to the AAA zone qualifying match, losing 5-1 to West Vancouver Secondary. Kelsey Lonergan scored the only goal for New Westminster. Brandon Darby, a NWSS grad, has coached the team for four years. The former spring league club coach has seen his school team bolstered by club players from the Burnaby youth team.

“We used to not have a full team, and now we’ve won it twice,” said Darby. “We had eight starters injured this season, but we still managed to win. Next year is our year.” The New Westminster team is lead by junior Ellen Colbourne and Sunny Virk, one of only two seniors graduating from the team this year. The other senior is goalie Katrina Hilliard.

New Westminster field lacrosse put seven players on this season’s Burnaby Mountain Selects teams.
