A Vancouver city worker who witnessed the alleged assault of newspaper delivery man Firoz Khan by three off-duty police officers said on Thursday that the trio seemed obviously intoxicated. Phil Pilon, testifying in the ongoing trial of New Westminster Police Const. Jeffrey Klassen, said he had extensive firsthand experience watching police make violent arrests while working the night shift downtown but said the incident involving Khan around 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 21, 2009 in front of the Hyatt Regency hotel was unlike
anything he’d seen before. “I thought something odd was happening,” Pilon told Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Jodie Werier. “I wasn’t sure whether they were onduty plainclothes police or off-duty.” “These guys appeared drunk,” the witness added. “It was obvious to everyone around.” Klassen is also accused of possession of stolen property. Khan’s cellphone, which Pilon said went flying while Khan, 49, was being beaten was later found in Klassen’s pocket. Pilon said he saw Klassen, 38, punching Khan in the head with a closed fist while the delivery man, who hasn’t been able to work since,
was laying face-down on the ground. The witness became angry under extensive cross-examination by defence lawyer Dwight Stewart, who suggested Pilon’s memory of what took place may have been clouded by media accounts of the incident. “You can suggest all you want,” said Pilon. “I saw what I saw.” Crown prosecutor Ralph Keefer said during his opening earlier this week that witnesses will be called to prove that Klassen had been drinking extensively that night with two other relatively inexperienced officers, West Vancouver Const. There was concern in the arts community on what effect closing Massey Theatre for an extensive period of time would have on the theatre’s operations. Another concern was uncertainty around whether the funding would be there in a couple of years to build a
new, larger theatre, the report said. The board of education is holding a special meeting Monday night to discuss the report and vote on two motions: that the board confirm its plan to include Neighbourhood Learning Centres at the elementary school at the St Mary’s site, the middle school at the John Robson site and the high school; and that, based upon the level of public support, the board confirms its plan to replace Massey Theatre.
The city will also discuss Massey Theatre at an afternoon council meeting Monday and there will be an opportunity for the public to speak at the open meeting in the evening as well.

The right to a lawyer exists to ensure that those accused of breaking the law understand our justice system and ultimately receive a fair trial. This week’s ruling undermines that. In the pursuit of a confession, police interrogators can veer into legally dubious territory, but without legal counsel,
there is no one there to pull them back. Restricting access to lawyers simply increases the odds the wrong person will go to jail. It’s been said that people will trade freedom for security, as long as it’s someone else’s freedom. Where the constitution is involved, however, the freedom is never someone else’s. If you were accused of a crime, which of your rights would you discard?
Female leaders face a tough road IN MY VIEW

t began with a harmless enough discussion in the newsroom. My colleagues started to chat about NDP leader Carole James, and the consensus seemed to be: “She’s a nice lady, but she’s not much of a leader.” I think it was the use of the word “lady” that did it. Out came my soapbox, and up on it I climbed. It was a long rant, but the basic premise is this: Female leaders are still being judged through a sexist lens. Before all you men start saying, “What, I’m not allowed to express an opinion about a woman in politics without being labelled sexist?” – no, that is absolutely not what I mean. What I mean is that we as a society – both men and women – have been so conditioned to associate “leader” with “man” that we don’t even realize we’re doing it. We pass judgment on a person’s leadership qualities based on our experience of what “leaders” look, act and sound like. Which is to say: Male. Think about it. What do we think of when we think of a leader? Someone who’s aggressive.

Assertive. Forceful. Dominant. Competitive. Am I saying that women can’t be those things? Of course not. I know countless women who embody those qualities. But those characteristics are traditionally associated with “masculine” mindset and behaviour. As a society, those aren’t qualities we nurture or value in girls and women. From the playground on up, little girls are urged to play nice and work together, and little boys are encouraged to run faster, throw harder and just generally do better than the other guy. This often-unconscious stereotyping leads to unmistakable differences between men’s and women’s styles of relating to other people – and, inevitably, to differences in leadership style. Think, if you will, of some of the qualities we associate with “feminine” mindset and behaviour. Cooperation. Conciliation. Empathy. Compassion. Qualities, in short, that we ascribe to “nice” people – but not to leaders. And that’s where James – and a whole lot of other women, in politics and in business – come up against a no-win situation. Try to lead in a traditionally “feminine” way, with cooperation and conciliation and empathy, and you’ll be written off as weak. Try to lead in a more traditionally “masculine” way, with aggression and dominance and forcefulness, and you’ll be written off as a “bitch.” ◗James Page 7
‘Smart’ card system is flawed Dear Editor:
In 2013, TransLink will launch a new electronic fare system (http://tinyurl.com/BuzzerBlog) that would allow it to charge riders only for the distance they actually travel, rather than by zone. But just because they can charge more for people travelling long distances doesn’t mean they should. A “smart” card system is anything but. It makes intuitive sense to drivers to say that someone travelling from King George to Waterfront ought to pay more than someone going from Columbia to Sapperton. But when it comes to public transportation, riders paying more for travelling longer distances hamstrings efforts to get more people out of their cars. TransLink should be doing all it can to provide
incentives for suburbanites travelling long distances into work to take transit instead of driving. I understand that it costs more for TransLink to carry them, but it is more challenging and impactful to remove a car from the road that would travel from Surrey into Vancouver than a car travelling only a few blocks. The fare changes proposed are better than the current system. But what we really ought to do is implement a flat-fare system. Yes, it means that we subsidize riders in the ’burbs. Taking transit at least some of the time is easy in New Westminster, much of Vancouver and parts of Burnaby. Everywhere else in the Lower Mainland, it’s a significant sacrifice. Paying more for less service makes it even less attractive to choose public transit.

Check out this excerpt from her blog, Only in New West: In recent months, I’ve received numerous blog postings from Norman Wriglesworth. Curious, I’ve looked him up but been unable to find him in any online telephone directories. My editor assured me she has spoken with a Norman Wrigglesworth on the phone in the past, but doubted he was computer savvy and a blog follower. Arriving at work today after the long weekend, I
discovered Norman had called over the weekend. When I did speak to him, he quickly cleared up any confusion about whether he was indeed posting comments on my blog and others around town. “I don’t have a computer,” he told me. Looking closer at the name left in fairly frequent comments posted on my blog, I see that “Norman” spells “his” name Wriglesworth – one letter different than the real deal. … Norman Wriglesworth isn’t a common name. For
someone to use that name in its entirety (even if it’s shy one G) and post quite opinionated statements about city business and other topics, seems a bit wrong to me. Name theft? Unless there is indeed a real Norman Wriglesworth (with one G and a computer), perhaps a new blog name is needed. It’s a catch-22 that’s still all too prevalent, considering that we’re a decade in to the 21st century. Enough already, you say. It’s a tired old feminist refrain that’s been sung to death. Fair enough. It is. What’s sad is that it’s still true. Consider this list of names: Gordon. Ed. Brad. Greg. Dalton. Jean. Darrell. David. Robert. Danny. Dennis. Floyd. Eva. Those would be the premiers of Canada’s provinces and territories – all male, with the single exception of Eva Aariak of Nunavut. Federally, how does Parliament look? Well, we have Stephen, Michael, Gilles and Jack as party leaders. And, according to a study on the government’s own website, as of 2008, 68 of 308 seats were held by women – that’s a sad 22.1 per cent. Municipal governments, according to the same study, fare a touch better, with 23.4 per cent female representation. That’s still a sad number. Here in New Westminster, the news is mixed. Yes, we’ve had female mayors, and there’s been strong female leadership at city hall, both elected and among staff. Then again, we have a male mayor,
and only two of six current councillors are women. How about worldwide? Well, take a look at the G-8 leaders and you’ll find Angela Merkel, chancellor of Germany, as the solitary woman. (Interestingly, Merkel is the leader of a country where coalition government is the norm – she became chancellor not by virtue of winning the most seats in a first-pastthe-post election, but by building alliances. Sounds rather like cooperation, doesn’t it?) Still not swayed? Consider the recently published Forbes magazine list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. Topping the list? Michelle Obama. Yup, if you’re a woman in 2010, having the right husband apparently makes you more powerful than being Secretary of State (Hillary Clinton, No. 5) or, for that matter, leading a country yourself (Merkel, No. 4). I’m not dissing Obama. I think she’s an incredible role model in many ways, and she’s choosing to make the office of First Lady mean far more than just “attractive woman with great clothes who looks good standing beside the president.” But in a world without gender bias, surely she
would be the most powerful woman in the world for being the president – not for being married to him. Sigh. I’m not saying there are any easy answers. Finding ways to ensure better female representation in politics and in leadership positions of all kinds is a complex task. But surely a good first step is for us to acknowledge that, yes, we still have a huge societal problem with sexism. So go ahead and think that Carole James isn’t leadership material. Go ahead and dislike her policies, her party, her politics, her vision for B.C. (or, some might argue, her lack thereof). But before you dismiss her as just a “nice lady,” stop and think. Are you dismissing her because she’s not effective as a leader? Or because maybe, just maybe, you’ve been influenced by perceptions that have less to do with real leadership ability and more to do with old stereotypes and gender biases? Sweet rewards for high school project A CLASS ACT

t’s a high school project that pays off with honey. New Westminster Secondary School has held a beehive program, where science students, under the direction of teacher Axel Krause, help raise bees. This year, one of the hives produced 100 pounds of honey. Three baby hives have produced about 20 pounds each since June, and there is hope that the four hives will survive the winter and produce about
400 pounds of honey next year. Eight high school students are actively involved in the bee program, but that number is expected to increase as the bee club starts up this year. The project helps teach students about life cycles and honey production of an insect responsible for roughly one-third of what we eat. Krause is a former beekeeper who started the program in 2008 with students in the school’s environmental club. To start the unique beehive project, Krause had to get approval and financing from the school district. Honeybees have garnered a great deal of media coverage in the last
decade because they are disappearing like dinosaurs. Honeybee colonies in North America have shrunk significantly in the last 20 years. These diminishing populations make housing beehives – from an environmental perspective – an important step in helping students’ value and understand the insects. There is also the larger community benefit of having more honeybees in the neighbourhood, helping to pollinate plants. Do you have a good-news story about local schools? location – which would involve both a liquor primary licence (for a new pub license) and a licensed retail store licence (for a private liquor store) – if he sold his Columbia Street building. to Ballenas Project Management, which has since demolished the hotel and replaced it with the new Downtown Interurban condominium tower. Mayor Wayne Wright denies any such promise was made. Despite significant community opposition, rezoning for the 12th Street location nonetheless received approval for a third reading by council but was removed after Walia spoke up about his application at an October 2006 council meeting. As a result, city council was advised by its lawyers to repeal its third reading vote due to a procedural bylaw that prevents members of the public from speaking about rezoning matters before council while they are between third and fourth readings to prevent the appearance of corrupting the public process. Walia contends city officials should therefore have prevented him from speaking to council about the rezoning. Council unanimously voted against the rezoning in January 2007. Walia promptly tried to cancel his deal with Ballenas – a deal partially arranged by Whitehead – but courts ruled against him. A second attempt to get a pub and liquor store at different site on 12th Street was also unanimously denied by council. Walia’s liquor licences have since expired. Judge Gropper is expected to release her verdict some time in the next few weeks.

If there is anyone who can truly appreciate Barack Obama’s slogan of “Yes We Can” about making positive changes in life, it is former homeless drug addict Ken Lyotier. Fifteen years ago, Lyotier turned his life around for good and launched a non-profit recycling business called United We Can in Vancouver’s troubled Downtown Eastside that literally provides an opportunity for change to the so-called “binners” who recycle bottles and cans for money. More than just change actually; roughly around $2 million a year is put in the hands of people down on their luck in the country’s most impoverished neighbourhood. Lyotier, known on the streets as both Saint Ken and the King of the Binners, is now retired but wants to use his influence to help others help themselves and will be the keynote speaker at a New Westminster Homelessness Coalition (NWHC) fundraising dinner taking place tonight at Inn at the Quay. “People who are engaged in this activity are looking to earn some money from the work they’re doing,” said the 63-year-old. “That old idea of a lazy bum on welfare not willing to earn a living – mostly I’ve found that not to be the case. People feel like they want to be productive.” Since then, United We Can has started other services such as cleaning up alleys, and running bicycle and computer-repair shops and building an urban vegetable garden. Profits from tonight’s dinner, which includes an auction of artwork created by Downtown Eastside artists hosted by the CBC’s Catherine Gretzinger, will go toward I’s on the Street, a new downtown sidewalk cleaning service run in partnership between the NWHC and the

Lookout Society that so far employs eight people who live with mental health issues and/or are homeless. Walk for kids’ wishes
R
oyal City residents can help make some wishes come true for children coping with life-threatening illnesses. Wishmaker Walk for Wishes is a national walk whose participants include families, individuals and corporate and community groups. The Children’s Wish Foundation is holding a walk in New Westminster today (Saturday). Registration gets underway at 11 a.m. at the Heritage Grill at 447 Columbia St., and the walk starts at noon. The walk includes a leisurely stroll along Columbia Street and the boardwalk and will be followed by a celebration at 1 p.m. New Westminster MLA Dawn Black is participating in the event and urges Royal City residents to show the rest of B.C. that New Westminster has a big heart. “This family event will raise funds for children between the ages of three and 17 who are suffering from life-threatening illnesses, so they may experience their most heartfelt wish,” she said in an e-mail. “The foundation began in 1984 and has granted over 15,000 wishes to date to children suffering from high-risk illnesses.” Black notes that the walk will feature a pre-Halloween “Trick or Treat” where kids of all ages can sample candy, treats and hot chocolate at various stops along the walk route, as well as performances in Hyack Square by the Vancouver Circus School and local rock and blues band Foster Child. The registration fee is $20, but will be refunded upon collection of $175 in pledges. Prizes will be awarded to the top fundraisers. For more information visit www.childrenswish.ca.

A Douglas College marketing instructor has been appointed to the City of New Westminster’s economic development advisory committee. On her first trip to Uganda, New Westminster resident Laura Richard worked with people suffering from severe mental health disorders, including psychotic disorders, manic depression and bipolar disorder. In a country where life is hard enough without the plight of a health condition, Richard was, at first, overwhelmed by the suffering around her. “I was very depressed for a couple of weeks there … seeing people who weren’t always able to reach treatment or sustainable treatment. (The) lack of medication … was a large part of it,” said Richard, a graduate of Douglas College’s community social services workers program. Also in Uganda, there is a stigma around having a mental illness, just as there is here, Richard said. While it was tough at first, by the end of her two-and-a-half-month stay, Richard said she didn’t want to leave. “It was hard to come home to Canada and realize how much we take for granted,” she said. “Also, that sense of community wasn’t here, as it was there.”
Richard enjoyed her trip so much that she has gone back. The 25-year-old is one of 15 Canadians aged 30 and under that Douglas College has sent to Uganda to work in the country’s hospitals, libraries and aid centres as part of the college’s ongoing Uganda Project. They have travelled to the African country for a five-month paid internship. The program is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Douglas College partnered with both CIDA and the country of Uganda to make the project a reality. “We’re aiming for two things,” John Fox, a Douglas College instructor and coordinator of the Uganda project, said in a press release. “One, we want to contribute to developing projects that will boost people’s quality of life. Two, we want to give young Canadians international experience that will help them find jobs back home.” Some participants are in Uganda’s Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, where they will work with patients with HIV/AIDS, medical conditions, mental illnesses and other healthrelated needs. Others are working on literacy projects in community libraries with the Ugandan Community Library Association. Others have been placed as interns with the Child Restoration Outreach, where they are working with street-entrenched children and youth, as well as with the Uganda
Schizophrenia Fellowship, the Uganda Society for Disabled Children and the Namugongo Fund for Special Children. “When participants come back, they’ll be able to use this experience to kick start their careers,” said Fox. “Given their age, the benefit will pay itself forward for decades.” The college has a strong foundation of experience in Uganda already. Since 2006, close to two dozen students from the community social service worker program, and more recently from the co-occurring disorders, early childhood education and dental assisting programs, have travelled to Uganda for 10-week field learning practicum placements with various agencies as part of their education. The college also has other long-term commitments to Uganda. In 2006, it established the Uganda Endowment Fund to provide funding for social service agencies in Uganda with a focus on inspiring children, strengthening families and building community resources. “Uganda is improving rapidly, but it pales in comparison to Canada in terms of health, education and social services,” Fox said. “Contributions made by Canadians in partnership with Ugandans will enhance the pace of progress, but more importantly will contribute to the learning and development of both partners.” For more about Douglas College, see www.douglascollege.ca.

New recycling drive targets batteries and cellphones
Royal City residents with drawers being cluttered up with out-ofdate cell phones now have an easy option to recycle them through a new provincial collection program. As part of the recently launched provincewide recycling program, batteries and/or phone can be dropped off at select locations across the city.
“This will make it easier for consumers who have either a small battery or alkaline battery or cellphone that they’re not using any more ... and to be able to recycle it, and by having this system they’re able to phone, find out where the nearest location is, go over there and drop it off,” said John Yap, B.C. minister for Climate Action.
While the Call2Recycle program has allowed people to recycle reusable batteries for several years, the newly expanded initiative now allows people to drop off many more kinds of batteries – including those weighing up to five kilograms – as well as cellphones. Participating businesses include London Drugs (555 Sixth St.),
Western Shaver Center (544 Sixth St.) and Magnacharge Battery (1279 Derwent Way). Other recycling boxes in the Lower Mainland can be found by calling 1-888-224-9764 or online at www.call2recycle.ca. The fascinating world of historical re-enactors Battle of Little Big Horn; the Battle of the Plains of Abraham; Williamsburg, Virginia; Louisbourg, N.S.; Fort Nisqually, Washington; as well as Great Britain or Europe – where you might come across some Anglo-Saxon hordes, a few Vikings or even a Roman legion or two. The list is really very large. In B.C., you will find some re-enactors in places like Barkerville, Fort Steele, Burnaby Village and Fort Langley, but do look further because there are many others. One of the most active groups in the Lower Mainland is the Living History Group, who spe-

e-enacting an historical event has been around for some time, but with more and more coverage of this activity on historically themed TV channels, many more people are becoming aware of it. Some of the prominent re-enactors are concerned with the U.S. Civil War; elements of the First and Second World Wars; the

From that research perspective and from our experience with historical fiction, we are well aware of the effort that goes into the study needed to portray an actual person from the past.

If you don’t have enough flex in the stick, it just doesn’t work the way it should.” Ronning said that, because the business is factory direct, they are able to keep prices lower than they would otherwise retail for. “We can offer a highquality product that would sell for maybe $270 and can get it to people for under $149.” He said a motivating factor was making the game he loves more affordable for families. “I’ve been coaching kids

Cottonwoods can pose a hazard in wind BRANCHING OUT ANNE MARRISON
Question: This spring we lost two of our cottonwood trees because of the windstorm. They are very tall, and we have six more in the backyard. Which is the best time to reduce some branches from the trees? Jaya, e-mail Answer: Cottonwoods can be hard to live with. They grow extremely tall and
tend to crash down in windstorms because they have shallow roots. In old cottonwoods, rot can develop, and large branches or even the whole top can topple in high winds. The dormant season, late fall and winter, is the best time to prune them, but pruning may be the wrong thing to do in this case. If your remaining cottonwoods are tall, old trees, pruning any of the huge branches may make them more unstable. Moderate pruning of all the branches to preserve symmetry will make them prone to rotting and more dangerous in the long run. If you are in a newly
built home, it’s possible that land-clearing has exposed the trees much more to the force of the wind. It’s very likely the next few winters will see some of the others falling as well – maybe in places that can cause you serious problems. I think you should ask an arbourist to visit and evaluate whether these trees are dangerous. It’s possible the safest thing may be to get these trees taken down before nature does it for you. But removal won’t deprive you of cottonwoods or that delightful honey smell they exude in the spring. Suckers will spring up
from the roots and these young trees will be safe for many years. ◆ Question: I have a question about a plant in Coquitlam. It’s about six feet tall with reddish, hollow stalks and small purplish flowers like an orchid at the top of the plant. The seed pods have a skinny, pear shape, and when they are touched, they burst and the seeds fly. Ray Reynolds, e-mail Answer: The plant you’ve seen sounds like Policeman’s Helmet (Impatiens glandulifera). It’s said to come from the hill country of India. It’s a really beautiful
plant, but it’s on invasive lists because when it gets established it grows in dense stands that crowd out native plants. People often filch a bit from the wild and plant it in their gardens – but it can be a problem to control even there. ◆ Question: I just received my little Rose of Sharon, Freedom, through mail order and was advised to plant it as soon as possible. With the current cold weather, should I set it out now or repot it in a bigger pot and store it in the garage until next spring? Funn Loong, e-mail Answer: The Rose of Sharon
(Hibiscus syriacus) will do best removed from the pot and planted outside this fall in a sheltered sunny spot. Protect it from cold by piling leaves, straw or bark mulch on top of the soil around your plant. Remove the mulch in spring after frost. If you garden only in containers, putting it in a bigger pot is a good idea. In the garage you will need to be very careful to water so that the soil stays gently moist. adillac has a long history of famous coupes, including the ’59 Eldorado, whose iconic tail fins are often used to symbolize a golden era for American automobile production and prosperity. It’s been eight years since an Eldorado Coupe last graced a Cadillac new car showroom, but a coupe is back for 2011. Cadillac has expanded its successful rear-drive CTS line up to include a sexy two-door version. While nothing like its older predecessor, the CTS reflects the dramatic changes that have also taken place within the prestigious luxury car division of General Motors. The CTS line has transformed Cadillac and made it far more appealing to younger buyers. Its sharp and very distinctive styling lines are augmented by a rigid chassis and a sport-tuned suspension. Two highoutput V6 and a V8 are the engine choices, a manual transmission is offered, and the interior is decidedly driver-focused yet still luxurious. Our test CTS Coupe (base price $47,450) came with a six-speed automatic transmission included in a (Premium) Preferred Equipment ($7,085) package, and a Sport ($1,770) packages, plus a special “Tintcoat” paint ($1,295) – which pushed its price up to $59,250, including fees and delivery charges.
The base CTS sedan comes with a 3.0litre (270-horsepower) V6 engine and a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. The CTS-V coupe comes with a 6.2-litre (556-horsepower) supercharged V8 engine and a horde of other performance components. The Coupe comes with a 3.6-litre V6 that has all the latest engine technology including four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing and direct fuel injection.
The Looks
Nicely proportioned and lower than the sedan, the CTS Coupe has the same sharply chiselled and very distinctive styling lines. While the coupe’s wheelbase is the same as the sedan, the body is a little shorter, and it has a wider rear track. The Coupe’s front windshield is also more steeply raked than the sedan, and so is its rear window.
The Inside
The Coupe’s dash is much like the sedan with a three-pod instrument cluster, with a combination of analog and digital readouts, in front of the driver. The front bucket seats are generously sized, and you sit lower, more sports-carlike, than in the sedan. The two rear seating positions look inviting and are nicely padded and upholstered. Head and leg room is limited, however.

Safety
The front passenger is protected by a dual-depth design of airbag that’s more effective at reducing injuries. The OnStar system, with security and emergency features, is another GM exclusive.
The Drive
The driving position is excellent with an full range of adjustments on the seats. Rear vision is limited and the side mirrors are small, so the rear view camera
came in very handy. The sport package stiffened the ride, but it was still comfortable. The body feels rock solid over rough roads. The transmission shifts smoothly, but if you want to drive more enthusiastically, the manual mode is the way to go.

Obituaries
MOORE, Gertrude Edith (Trudy)
Died suddenly at home in New Westminster on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010. Known as Trudy by her many B.C. friends, but grew up as Gertrude in Oshawa, ON., one of five siblings. Trained in Ottawa as a Registered Laboratory Technologist, specializing in Haematology and Microbiology, Gertrude’s career took her to Syracuse, N.Y., Bermuda, and New Westminster where she worked as microbiologist at the Royal Columbian Hospital from 1953 until her retirement in 1989. Gertrude was loved by all who knew her. Her great loves were nature and animals, art and music. She travelled to many parts of the world on birding or cultural trips and also had fun on wilderness canoe trips with Ontario siblings. She was a long-time volunteer with Orphaned Wildlife, and worked to support causes related to animals and the environment. Gertrude’s joy in her seven successive “pooches” cannot be overlooked. She served on the Arts Council and was herself a painter. She played viola for many years with the Elgar Strings and the New Westminster Symphony, also serving on the Board of Directors. She also quietly supported upcoming musicians. Gertrude’s long phone visits will be sorely missed by her siblings: Ruth Jones (Johnnie,deceased) Richmond, B.C., Bett Warnica (Jim), Oshawa ON, Dave Moore (June), St. Catharines ON, and Mary Buck (Bob) Mississauga ON. Loved by nieces and nephews Olwen, Leslie, Wayne, Richard (deceased), David, Gwen and Bruce, as well as many great-nieces and nephews. A celebration of Gertrude’s life will be held on October 18th, 7 - 9 pm at the Glenbrook Park Amenities Building in New Westminster and her ashes will be interred in Oshawa, ON. Her family thanks Trudy’s friends and neighbours for their kind help over the last few years. If desired, donations could be made to Orphaned Wildlife, or the New Westminster Symphony, or a charity of your choice.

Whenever we say ‘yes’ to one thing, we are saying ‘no’ to something else. When exploring and committing to a career change, sacrifices are necessary. It takes time, energy and money to investigate, develop and secure a career that will ultimately provide you with the time, energy and money that you desire. The average person will spend approximately 45 years of their life involved in the world of work. This breaks down to approximately 40 hours a week, 8 hours a day. And this is a conservative figure when you factor in overtime, commuting time, and the energy you spend thinking about work-related things, even when you’re not there. A huge portion of life is devoted to work. If you are experiencing intellectual, creative, social or physical satisfaction in your work, then it will be a huge joy. If you are experiencing very little satisfaction, or if it’s depleting you of your own humanness, then it will be a huge burden. I believe that life is too precious and too short to tolerate a painful situation, not when there are alternatives you can access. Yes, the process of making a career change can take considerable time, energy and money, (trust me, I know, I’ve made several career changes in my life), but you need to see this process as an investment toward your daily, as well as long term peace and happiness. It takes courage, commitment and a positive attitude to pursue a career path that can bring you closer to what you really want. It means saying ‘no’ to what’s contributing to your discontent and saying ‘yes’ to doing whatever it takes to acquire something meaningful, powerful and gratifying for you and your life!
