The City of New Westminster is set to consider how to acknowledge its racist actions toward Chinese-Canadians. On Monday, council will consider a staff report about the Chinese reconciliation process that’s been underway for nearly a year. “I think it will be significant. The work we have done is very good,” said Coun. Bill Harper. “We are the only city in Canada to attempt it. I think it will resolve the issue.” City staff spent eight months researching council minutes from 1860 to 1926 and found that the city discriminated against the Chinese community regarding land and buildings, city regulations, employment opportunities and other areas. Staff then consulted with the public about appropriate steps toward reconciliation. “As we have gone through the process, interest has gone up,” Harper said. John Stark, the city’s senior social planner, said the city consulted with about 150 people during the consultation process. That included about 80 people ◗Reconciliation Page 8

The Columbia Street restaurant hosts the monthly drag shows and a weekly gay night in a private room at the back of the restaurant. Every Saturday, it opens up the room to the city’s burgeoning gay crowd – and their friends – for a night of fun called G.I.N. (Gay in New West). Luv started sauntering on the Heritage stage with her drag show in February 2009. At the time, she was also doing a show in Surrey but later dropped it. “The one in New West was so busy and so big that we decided to move the show over to New West. It’s a better venue.” People questioned whether the night could be a success in New West, but the crowds kept growing. Still, for Luv, the numbers don’t really matter. “I’ll perform for two people if that’s all that’s there,” she says. Luv first stepped on the stage in 1991. “The same year I started drag, I came out. I was watching shows. I saw good shows and some bad shows, and I said ‘Oh, I can do that,” Luv says. “(The first time) was Halloween, and it was a dare to get up onstage. It was a dare, otherwise, I wouldn’t do it.” Luv prefers performing over the almost two hours it takes to get ready for a show. “If I wasn’t on stage, I wouldn’t be in drag,” she says. Luv owns about 80 wigs, “which is low for a queen.” As for her reputation as a cheeky performer, Luv says it’s more hype than reality. “In drag, everyone thinks of a drag queen as bitchy. I’m more bitchy as me,” she says. Luv praises Heritage Grill owner Paul Minhas for opening his doors to the gay crowd and the drag night. “It’s astonishing to me what he is offering. There’s no one else who would say, ‘Hey, come and have a drag show.’” Heritage owner Minhas says the city’s demographics are changing “drastically,” and he wants to have a venue that meets the needs of every group. The Heritage Grill also hosts live music seven days a week, a documentary film night and

Minhas says he was approached by the gay community and asked if he would host a night in a second room at his restaurant. Board of education chair James Janzen and trustee Brent Atkinson are in China, attending a graduation ceremony at the New Westminster school district’s overseas high school. “It’s important that we have some sort of presence there,” Atkinson, the business company’s CEO, told The Record when he made the trek to China for last year’s ceremony. “It’s a cultural thing. If nobody went, it would be a slap in the face.” The business company runs a school and an ESL program in Wenzhou, China. The district has invested almost $1 million into the controversial endeavour, which critics says drains money and time from the district. Janzen left for China Thursday, June 24 and is slated to return Monday. This is the

first time the trustee has gone to China. “It’s pretty whirlwind,” Janzen said about the short trip. The district launched the company after the B.C. Liberals introduced legislation in 2002 allowing school districts to go into business. The company charges students in China for the B.C. school curriculum and expects to make $100,000 this year. This is the third year in a row that the company will bring money into the district to offset the almost $1 million the district has invested. The audited financial statements for 2008 showed net earnings of $36,649, and $157,365 for 2009. When asked recently why earning were down over the previous year, Atkinson wouldn’t comment. “I will wait until the audited financial statements are out and the business company reports back to the shareholder, that is the district,” he said.

Avoid smoke detector scam New Westminster firefighters support smoke detectors, but they’re not using them as a means of collecting cash. Glen Bailey, vicepresident of the New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society, said the fire department received a call from a concerned citizen who had been contacted by someone claiming to be from the fire department. The caller discussed updated regulations for smoke detectors and then asked if the resident would be willing to donate $150 to the fire department. “The person said no,

they would get back to them, and phoned the fire department,” Bailey said. Neither the New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service nor the New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society are

soliciting donations by telephone or e-mail. According to Bailey, the only way the society solicits donations is through its fundraising events or donations dropped off at fire halls.

End?” in the June 19 edition of The Record. Love brought me to Canada in 2006 from Seattle as my boyfriend – now husband – Terry is a Canadian. We lived in downtown Vancouver until moving to New Westminster in 2008. The sidebar story, “The fight for rights: from criminals to marriage vows,” was poignant because as a former religion reporter in Seattle (1998-2000), I noticed a change taking place in the larger gay community with more and more gays and lesbians wanting to legally marry like heterosexuals and hear those words, “in the presence of God.” Just before moving from Seattle, a domestic partnership bill was signed into law, but I had mixed feelings: thrilled to participate in the public rally on the steps of the state capitol asking for passage of such a law but bittersweet that those around me couldn’t marry like Terry and I could in Canada.

Staff keep eyes peeled for criminal activity

City staff are hoping to help take a bite out of crime after adopting the “City Watch” program created by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). The new municipal crime-fighting program was announced Tuesday after a brief ceremony at city hall. Similar to the popular residential Block Watch program, where people are encouraged to keep an eye on their neighbours and receive training on how to make observations that could be helpful to police, City Watch combines the efforts of city employees, CUPE 387 members, New Westminster Fire and Rescue Service and the New Westminster Police Service to prevent and reduce crime by encouraging municipal employees to be alert to any criminal activity they may witness on the job. “City Watch provides employees with training on what to look out for in the course of their dayto-day duties,” explained Jeannie Ziraldo, human

Air India apology only a beginning

When former Supreme Court justice John Major recently released his scathing report on the botched investigation of the 1985 Air India bombing, few people who’ve paid attention to the case would be surprised by his conclusion that “a cascading series of errors” by government, the RCMP and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) were to blame for failing to prevent the tragedy. Certainly New Westminster author Donald Hauka wasn’t. “No, I can’t say that I was,” he said with a bitter chuckle. “A lot of the things that were outlined in the report, we’ve been saying for years.” Along with investigative reporter Salim Jiwa, Hauka literally wrote the book on the longest, costliest trial in Canadian history of the accused bombers, one that resulted in

not a single conviction due to ineptitude and lack of cooperation between the Mounties and Canada’s then-new spy service. Their 2006 book, Margin of Terror, covers what they call “the judicial debacle” that resulted in Sikh separatists Ripudaman Singh Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri being found not guilty of Canada’s worst act of mass murder. Air India Flight 182 blew up off the coast of Ireland after a bomb hidden in luggage at YVR Airport exploded, killing all 329 people aboard, 270 of them Canadians. An hour earlier, another bomb, destined for a second Air India plane on the other side of the world, exploded on the ground at Tokyo’s Narita Airport, killing two baggage handlers. Hauka said the apology from Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Wednesday was a belated step in the right direction. “The thing that astonished me the most was when Brian Mulroney was coming out and sending his condolences to the people of India,” he said,

still incredulous more than two decades later. “This was a Canadian tragedy. This is something that affected our country, and yet for years there was this sense of, ‘Oh, it happened a long way away over the Irish Sea and affected an identifiable ethnic community, so what’s the problem?’” Renee Saklikar, who was raised in the Royal City and lost her aunt and uncle in the bombing, agrees that the longawaited apology will be of some consolation for families who continue to be affected by the tragedy. “I think it’s important as well that the current government – and credit has to be given to them because they are the ones that finally ordered the inquiry – is issuing an apology,” said Saklikar, who is married to NDP MLA Adrian Dix. “While the people who put bombs on the planes are the ones to blame, it is something that affects and continues to affect Canadians. Entire families have been devastated.” Saklikar said the ordeal has been particularly hard

on her mother, Banu, who lost her younger sister in the blast. “They were both doctors in their 40s, heading back after their first trip to Canada, where they had a truly wonderful time, barbecues with the neighbours, doing all the touristy summer things,” said the self-described New West girl, the daughter of former longtime local school trustee Vasant Saklikar. “There were so many children on board, and so many families have been devastated. There was one family with four generations of women all on board taken out, just like that.” Hauka says that while the apology is helpful, the next step will have to be some sort of financial compensation for affected families. “The families made it clear they were unhappy with the way they were treated. This is more for them. The victims should be compensated and Canadians can finally embrace this as ‘our’ horrible tragedy … a tragedy for everybody involved.”

Nothing can keep her down Despite serious illness, grad keeps on moving forward BY NIKI HOPE REPORTER

When Leah McLellan was four years old, her parents noticed that it was hard for her to walk long distances. “I would cry,” she says. They also noticed that her joints were swollen. “It looked like I’d had an allergic reaction,” Leah explains. When the diagnosis came, it was a bleak one. Little Leah had polyarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, meaning she had a chronic, progressive and degenerative disease that made every joint in her tiny body ache. When Leah’s mom, Kathy, began look-

ing for information on it, what she found didn’t give her much reassurance. “It was scary because at the time there was really just one book about childhood arthritis, so I read it. … There was a chapter about picking out your child’s wheelchair,” Kathy says. “It was a shock to read that, (but) that didn’t turn out to be the case, and that doesn’t turn out to be the case for very many. “I don’t think the pain part was the biggest part because I knew they could control the pain. It was the fact that it was a crippling disease. My concern was, what was going to happen to her.” What’s happened to Leah is that despite swelling in her joints and some difficult, pain-filled days, she has managed to thrive, and, this month, Leah graduated from New Westminster Secondary School. Fred Langston, head of the counselling

department at NWSS, says Leah “pushes through it in the most admirable way.” “She is a solid A/B student across the board,” he says. “A very, very bright character. She just does so incredibly well and doesn’t whine. She does not let herself be a victim. … Whereas sometimes people, including me, might use this as an excuse to put out at a much lower level. And she’s so pleasant while doing it.” There are days when it’s hard for the 17-year-old to get out of bed. Mornings when it feels like she’s been “ran over by a truck.” “I’m in pain every day – to a degree,” she says. “These days, I’m really tired. I do find, most of the time, I have to rest more than other people.” Early spring is an especially rough period.

“I’ll have a huge flareup. My immune system gets down,” she says. This year, she had strep throat, bronchitis and two ear infections. To treat her arthritis, Leah takes a potent drug called methotrexate. She injects herself with the drug weekly and has to have her blood monitored because of serious side effects related to the medication. Leah has tried more than half a dozen different

drugs over the years. “This is the one that hasn’t given me terrible side effects,” she says. “It’s pretty easy compared to the other ones.” Genetics are not the cause of her arthritis, Leah says. “Personally, I think it’s the luck of the draw,” she says. She may have been dealt some difficult cards, but Leah has managed to play them well. She’s been accepted at the University of British Columbia and

plans to study general science. She wants to major in physiology and then go on to medical school. “I want to be a pediatrician,” she says. “Maybe specialize in rheumatology to deal with other kids with arthritis.” Along with school, Leah works for the City of New Westminster’s parks and recreation department and is involved in musical theatre. Overall, there isn’t much time to dwell on her illness. “Everyone has their

challenges,” Leah says. “I know I’m not the only one at my school who has overcome great challenges. You do what you can, that’s what I’ve learned. I’m not saying you can’t achieve anything, but you have to pace yourself.” When the pain kicks in at school, it’s hard to concentrate, but Leah has the support of staff at the high school. They have developed a learning plan that works for Leah – something she says had made a huge difference to

Royal Lancers part of May Day

The Royal Lancers are thrilled to be a part of New Westminster’s longstanding May Day tradition. In memory of Megan

The community is invited to help celebrate the life of a little girl whose life was tragically ended far too soon. Megan Gunderson was just three-and-a-half years old when she was hit by a vehicle in front of her Queensborough home 14 years ago. A woman was seen driving away, but no one has ever been charged in her death. A new toddler playground constructed in Ryall Park was named Megan’s Place. “I took her to that park everyday,” recalls grandma Dolly Gunderson. “She loved the park, absolutely loved the park.” Each June, family, friends and community members gather at Megan’s Place. She died on June 20, 1996. “Usually the moms and kids come, and we scrub

down the playground,” Gunderson said. “The firemen come and hose it down. It’s just great.” Community members are invited to attend this year’s event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 27. “My son barbecues hotdogs. We have hotdogs and drinks for the kids. We have Buttercup the clown coming,” Gunderson said. “The kids sweep the playground. They take ownership of it, which is good.” New Westminster police are still in touch with the family, but no one has been charged in the hitand-run. “The witness saw her look back and go,” Gunderson said of the driver. “It’s a terrible thing to live with.” When Megan was killed, she had been gardening with her mother and ran inside to get a hat to protect her blonde head from the sun. The little girl then saw a van that looked like her father’s and ran out towards the vehicle, probably thinking her dad was coming home.

Fraser River Pile & Dredge (GP) Inc., formerly Fraser River Pile Driving, will mark its 100 years in this industry next year. For many people watching activities on the Fraser, the letters FRPD on dredges, barges, pile drivers and tugs bring instant recognition and has done so for many years. In the early days of this firm, the colours were white with black letters while now the colour red is predominant. We, A Sense of History Research Services, are honoured to have been commissioned to write the history of this company as part of their anniversary celebration. The search is continuing as we chronicle the vital role played by this business, which by all standards has been the prominent player in this aspect of maritime industry. In New Westminster, the company’s home base,

the community has been able to watch its involvement with docks and structural foundations, bridgework, river training walls and many other structures. The company’s work can be found in such examples as ferry docks, bridge connections, harbour facilities, innovative wharfage and cannery footings. They were also involved with Expo ’86 construction, recent SkyTrain construction, the Vedder Canal and its connection to the British Empire Games of 1954, flood reconstruction of 1948 and even the rollercoaster at the PNE site. The Fraser River Pile & Dredge Company has played an important part in the growth of our province. Choir auditions for girls 5 to 25

Girls from five to 25 who can belt it out are invited to audition for the B.C. Girls Choir on Monday, June 28. Three programs are accepting new members. The introduction to the choral singing program, for ages five through seven, teaches new members the foundations of rhythm, singing, following a conductor and Curwen/ Kodály hand signals. There are two training choirs for ages seven to nine, and 10 years old and up.

Those over 10 participate in a weekend rehearsal camp. The Town and Tour Choir is for ages 12 to young adulthood. Members sing in three to six parts and perform and travel locally, nationally and internationally. The next tour, to take place in Canada, will be in 2011. “We’re looking for girls who are into singing,” said Lynn van Zanten, choir administrator. The choir had about 78 members last year but has had up to 100 in previous years, she said. The choir will also be starting SongClub this fall. It is a non-auditioned choir for elementary students from grades 2 to 7, according to van Zanten. She will be taking names for the club over the summer. Those interested in registering should contact her before September. Girls interested in auditioning for the choir on Monday must preregister. Three local schools – Connaught Heights, McBride and Hume Park – participated in Move for Health Day events in May. “Connaught Heights ended up doing a conga line,” she said. “I thought, I have to go see this.” Earle said Connaught

We had a little more money to play with.” The city received a $1,500 Walk B.C. grant from B.C. Recreation and Parks Association. Normally the grant for Move for Health Day events is about $300, but the extra funds allowed the city to do bigger events and hire guest speakers.

Employees and residents in the City of New Westminster know how to move-it move-it. Sandy Earle, the city’s Active Communities programmer, said 2,635 people participated in New Westminster’s recent Move for Health Day events. This included participants at three schools that held events and people who attended events at local recreation facilities. Ninety-five people participated in the first-ever community walk with the mayor, which included a walk through the neighbourhoood near city hall. “It went really well. We had a real range, everything from families to seniors,” Earle said. “We had a beautiful day. We were lucky.” After the walk, people gathered at city hall where they enjoyed guest speakers and a healthy lunch of fruit, vegetables, yogurt and muffins. “I made about 500 muffins. I did them for that and the corporate walk,” Earle laughed. “It was a lot of muffins.” Earle noted that the corporate walk for all city

The BGSC Canadian FC are loading up for a second season in the premier division of the Metro Women’s Soccer League. The Canadians received a commitment from four new players for the upcoming season, including graduated Simon Fraser University netminder Cassie Newbrook of New Westminster. Joining Newbrook are midfielders Lauren Lachlan and Amy Thorogood, and central defender Jessica Fleming. Newbrook was the Clan’s starting goalkeeper for her four seasons with the varsity team. She was named to NAIA Association of Independent Institutions all-conference first team last season. Newbrook started in 15 of 17 games last season for the varsity Clan, posting a stingly 0.82 goals against average in the independent conference. Douglas College names two new head coaches Cavanagh Whitely was named the new head coach of the Douglas College men’s baseball program June 23. Whitely, a 10-year member of the University of B.C. Thunderbirds’ varsity baseball team, worked the last seven seasons as a specialist coach in charge of infield, offensive systems development and the program’s mental skills training. From 2004 to the present, Whitely served as the full-time assistant coach to head coach Terry McKaig at UBC. That included the Thunderbirds’ run to a fourth-place finish at the NAIA world series in 2006. Whitely is also a high performance consultant with Baseball B.C. and the current coach of both Team B.C. and the national team summer program.

“I’m looking forward to taking over the Royals baseball program here at Douglas College,” said Whitely in a school press release. “Our goal here will be to develop student-athletes to meet their potential on and off the field, and allow them to move on to good four-year programs or even to the professional ranks.” Whitely started his career as a player at Douglas under coach John Haar. From there he transfered to UBC, where he played three season until 2002. He also played pro in Australia, while at the same time serving as a director of coaching and development for that country’s baseball association.

Clayton Pottinger as the new head coach of the men’s basketball program. Pottinger spent five seasons as the head coach of Kings University College in Alberta before taking on the assistant coaching role at his alma mater, University of Alberta. As a player, Pottinger played five seasons at Alberta, where he captained the Golden Bears to a Canadian Interuniversity Sports national championhip title in 1994. “I am thrilled at the opportunity to lead the Douglas Royals and I look forward to the challenge of competiting in the BCCAA conference,” Pottinger said in the release. “I will spend the summer recruiting and scouting players to ensure that Douglas College is competitive this year.”

Local masters sprinters getting older and faster Edmonds senior runner Norm Lesage set two new age-group sprint records in his debut into the 80-year-old ranks. Lesage, 80, won both the men’s 100- and 200-metre sprints in record time at the B.C. masters track and field championships in Langley last week. The Burnaby runner, who likes to champion the cause of physical fitness for seniors, won the 100m in a time of 16.25 seconds on Sunday. That time beat the Larry Chalmers’ 2009 provincial record time of 16.78. A day earlier, Lesage won the 200m with a 34.37 clocking, knocking six-tenths

of a second off Harry Thompson’s 2008 record time. “I was quite surprised,” said Lesage, who has been nursing stiffness in his leg. “The leg is still numb. The doctor says when the numbness goes, I’ll be faster.” Another senior runner, Klazina Noort of New Westminster, took first place in both the 100 and 200m in the women’s 75to-79 class. Noort clocked a 21.42 second time in the 100m and 45.41 in the 200m. She also has a B.C. masters record pending in the women’s 4x100m relay, also run at the Langley meet.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Sophie on Monday, June 21st, 2010 after 90 wonderful years. Sophie was born in Princeton, B.C., resided in Vancouver, then Burnaby. She was predeceased by her husband Lloyd, parents Peter and Milien and her siblings. She will be remembered by her daughter Pamela McCready, grandchildren Bryan (Beryl), Lauren (David) Sheldon, and great grandchildren Alessandra and Madeline. She will also be remembered by niece Evelyn, Alex and the McCready family, many friends in Burnaby and Seton Villa. Her passing cannot take away the loving memories of a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. Sophie enjoyed people and her infectious laugh and smiling eyes lit up any situation. She was never afraid to speak her mind. She faced life on her terms with enthusiasm, humour, and determination even when presented with difficult challenges. Sophie loved the B.C. Lions and was an original season ticket holder. She loved baking and her cheesecake, pies, and tarts will be missed. She spent many hours volunteering for Meals-On-Wheels, the Seton Villa Store, and Confederation Park. Until her eyesight deteriorated, she was an avid lawn bowler and card player. The family would like to thank the staff at Burnaby Hospital, Seton Villa, and Dr. Appleby for their kindness in making Sophie’s final years less difficult. At Sophie’s request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC would be appreciated.

Verna passed away peacefully June 19, 2010, age 92. Predeceased by her loving husband John, she is survived by her children, Roxsane Tiernan, Betty Toporowski, John Harper Jr., Sally Gibbeson, Ross Harper, Edward Harper and Grace Loftus. She also leaves 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Verna had a long and love filled life. Born in Winnipeg, she moved to Calgary where she attended high school and met her future husband. In 1937 her family moved to Vancouver and husband-tobe, John soon followed. They married in 1939 and shortly thereafter John went off to war and six long years of separation. Home again, the family grew. Verna and John settled in North Delta where they raised their children and operated a small nursery. When North Delta became residential they moved to Cloverdale and developed an experimental vineyard which tested more than 1000 varieties of grapes to determine their suitability for growing in BC’s climate. When Cloverdale became residential they moved to Cobble Hill and developed two of the earliest vineyards and wineries on Vancouver Island. Verna and John were true pioneers in BC’s viticulture and winery industry. They supplied the original vines for many of BC’s best known vineyards and were unstinting in the help, knowledge and encouragement they provided to anyone interested in viticulture and wine. Verna will be missed and fondly remembered. A special thanks to the staff at Kiwanis Care Centre for all their gentle care. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on June 29, 2010 at Columbia-Bowell Funeral Chapel, 219 Sixth Street, New Westminster. No flowers by request. Summer officially started this week, but that doesn’t mean you should put your job hunt on hold until September. This week I will debunk the most common summer job search myths – you can read part 2 of this article next week. Gregg Taylor MYTH #1: No one hires in the summer. This is true for some businesses, but others will hire in summer due to “use it or lose it” budgeting. Many companies have an August 31st year-end, and will hire to meet their budget spending deadline rather than risk next year’s budget being cut or reduced. Also, summer doesn’t stop normal business conduct; people will take vacations but work still has to be done! MYTH #2: Since nothing happens during the summer, you might as well head out of town for vacation. Since many people think this way, you can take advantage of reduced competition for jobs that are available by being in town. MYTH #3: You won’t find the job you really want in the summer, just part-time student type jobs. Companies recovering from the recession can’t afford to postpone hiring just because it’s summer. When the alternative is reduced productivity or losing a contract, employers will hire whenever they need to, at any time of year for a variety of positions.
