Civic centre stirs up interest Nine submissions received for new civic facility project BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

The City of New Westminster is impressed with the visions it’s received from the development community for the future multiuse civic centre in the downtown. The city issued an expression of interest to determine if a developer wishes to purchase density from the city, construct a tower above the multi-use civic facility and build the civic facility based on the city’s requirements. The city will also explore developer interest in a second city-owned property at 801 Columbia St. Lisa Spitale, the city’s director of development services, said the city received nine very good submissions. Because the submissions are “proprietary in nature,” Spitale couldn’t disclose the names of companies interested in partnering with the city on the project. “What I can say is we had an expectation that some of the developers working in the city would put their names forward,” she said. “That has certainly been the case.” Spitale said five of the submissions were from companies

A tradition for 140 years For the 140th time, May Day took place in New Westminster, and the long-standing Royal City tradition went off on Wednesday despite drizzly conditions at Queen’s Park Stadium. The weather meant the cancellation of the running relays, but the traditional maypole and folk dances still went on. After Emma Best from Lord Tweedsmuir was crowned as this year’s May Queen, the Ancient and Honourable Hyack Anvil Battery set off three special anvil salutes. See more photos and details on page 23.

Forum looks at train noise

MP seeking input about railways from Quayside residents

Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian is inviting residents to sound off about train noise. Julian is holding a community forum about railway noise in the New Westminster Quay neighbourhood on Sunday, May 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. The meeting is being held in the Hyack Room North at the Inn at Westminster Quay. When the federal government was considering legislation concerning railway operations about three years ago, Julian tried to get the government to include amendments that would have restricted operations in urban zones to daylight hours. He said the government didn’t include those amendments, saying the process included provisions to address concerns about noise from rail yards. On April 13, the Quayside Community Board filed a noise and vibration complaint requesting that the Canadian Transportation Agency issue an operating guide for the rail companies that restricts operation in this rail yard to between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. The Canadian Transportation Agency assisted the Quayside Community Board in 2008 in reaching a mediated settlement with rail companies operating in the rail yard adjacent to the Quayside neighbourhood. After the forum, Julian will work with residents on a plan to have the government address the issue. Julian said laws are put into place because not everyone will abide by a voluntary code.

The school district and the city are continuing to hammer out the details around a new high school for New Westminster students. The school district needs the city’s support to build the new high school because the City of New Westminster owns portions of the site and the school district owns other parts of the site, which is bounded by Eighth and 10th avenues and Eighth and Sixth streets. “We are having meetings together and trying to search out what Victoria is thinking, what the possibilities are,” said Mayor

Wayne Wright. “I think we are growing all the time. We have been at it so long. There are only so many cans you can kick at.” Wright wouldn’t address rumours that progress is being made regarding plans for the high school site and construction of a new school to replace the aging New Westminster Secondary School. “I am confident we are going to do it,” he said. “I really am.” Construction of a new high school was delayed in 2008 after an old cemetery was located on the site, meaning the district has less land on which to build a new high school. The site is also home to Mercer Stadium and Massey Theatre.

Should city go greener? Coun. Bill Harper wants to see if the city could benefit from greener energy sources. Harper said Terasen Gas has a program in place to help cities build strategies around the creation of central heating systems. He said those systems can be applied to one building (such as a civic centre or a school) or an area (such as the Braid industrial area, or the Brewery District development/Royal Columbian Hospital). Council passed a motion directing staff to meet with Terasen and report back on

the feasibility of developing a central heating distribution program as part of green engineering and greenhouse gas policy. “Some of our main construction pieces are up for grabs,” Harper said. “We need to be talking to them.” Once council has a staff report, he said the city will have a better understanding on how these different heating systems can be applied. “Terasen Gas provides grants,” Harper noted. “That is one of the motivators for doing this. “ tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

New research is on the brink of revolutionizing the production of the un-mineable oil sands will have enormous impact of emissions. Readers should research Petrobank Energy on the TSX. Branding the Athabasca oil sands wrongly now has a serious negative impact on the new greener process. The reality is that the oil sands are the greatest economic generator in Canada’s future. It is taking up the decline in the auto and other manufacturing industries in Canada. It provides jobs in all parts of Canada (17 per cent of the residents are from Newfoundland and Labrador, and hundreds more commute). It pays huge taxes directly to Ottawa and, through Alberta’s contributions to regional equalization, to all other provinces. It is a major contributor to the Canadian balance of trade. Without it, every Canadian would be paying an enormous amount for seasonal and other imported foods and every other imported goods. Thousands of Canadians receive monthly dividends from the operating companies directly or through their pension plans, which are heavy investors. Global warming may be a threat. But it cannot be resolved at the expense of Canada’s major economic driver. It cannot be solved without the co-operation of all the nations of the world. It cannot be solved by the astronomical costs of the current alternate energies. Fortunately, Canada has this huge and useful resource

currently working in the city, one was from someone wanting to work in the city, and another was from a company that’s looked at sites in the city in the past but didn’t proceed. One submission didn’t meet all the city’s requirements. “At the end of it, really good submissions,” she said. “We are going through the evaluation and interview process.” The city determined that a site in the 700 block of Columbia Street, between Eighth and Begbie streets, would be the best location for the $35-million multi-use civic facility. The City of New Westminster attended an Urban Development Institute meeting in April to unveil its request for expressions of interest for developers interested in development of a multiuse civic facility with possible high-density, mixed-use tower. Having secured gaming funds to build the civic facility, the city is interested in “leveraging opportunities” that could be gained by partnering with a developer. Two developers who attended that meeting but aren’t currently working in the city are among those who made submissions. “If it works, that’s great,” Spitale said. “If it doesn’t, that is OK. The city is entitled to have expectations.” Turnbull Construction Services, which has been hired by the city to manage the multi-use civic centre project, will ensure this process doesn’t creep into the project’s timelines. “We really need to be on the site, demolishing buildings in January 2011,” Spitale said. “That means in the next few months Lisa Spitale we have to nail down, will there be a ‘Due diligence’ developer partner? What does that look like?” Spitale said there’s no guarantee the city will decide to partner with a developer on the civic centre project. “Absolutely not,” she said. “We are in the full due diligence process right now.” The nine developers submitted their vision for the site and a concept about how the project would work. The city will then decide what the various proponents would bring to the table and what it would mean in terms of the project’s overall cost. Spitale said it’s evident the proponents have read the city’s downtown community plan and understand the principles of that plan. “We have had some pleasant surprises, in terms of some of the submissions in terms of the creativity,” she said. “In my own mind, I thought they would be highdensity residential, and they haven’t been.” While there are some common characteristics in their submissions, Spitale said there are variations because the developers have honed in on different aspects of the downtown plan. The plans principles include improving economic development opportunities and building a complete community. Some developers may be asked to submit detailed proposals. While some community members have speculated who the city may partner with, Spitale said no decision has been made. “At this point, every submission is looked at equally. … Personally, I wouldn’t be involved in something that is a fait accompli,” she said. The multi-use civic centre site would be bordered by Eighth and Begbie streets, from Columbia Street to below the SkyTrain guideway. The city’s portion of the project must be complete by December 2013. The City of New Westminster has yet to solidify what amenities would be included in the facility, but theatre space, art studios, recreation space, archives and museum facilities, meeting rooms, banquet and convention meeting space are among the uses being considered. The city previously purchased 801 Columbia St. for potential use as a civic centre or civic building site. City staff believe the two properties could work together and allow for two gateway developments at the foot of Eighth Street and Columbia Street.

Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian will be “pushing harder” in the weeks ahead to try and convince the government to extend its timeline for infrastructure projects in Canada. Julian said communities should be able to spend infrastructure grants in a way that makes sense so projects aren’t rushed to meet artificial deadlines. “I would agree you don’t want an open-ended timeline,” he said. “That doesn’t make sense either.” Julian is concerned that the federal government’s strict timelines may be creating extra burdens for municipalities. “You are handicapping these projects,” he said. “That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.” Julian said communities that have received federal grants may find themselves incurring unnecessary costs by rushing projects through to meet artificial deadlines. He believes a reasonable extended deadline is warranted.

“That is what municipalities are looking for,” he said. “We will be putting more pressure on the government. The City of New Westminster has received $8.3 million from each of the federal and provincial governments toward construction of Westminster Pier Park. The federal government is requiring that work be completed by March 31, 2011. “It’s something that we have raised. We haven’t got a satisfactory response,” Julian said. Coun. Bill Harper believes the City of New Westminster could save money – and possibly build more of the park – if the federal government would relax its March 2011 construction deadline. “We are going to have to build the landscaping on top of the deck at the time of year it is recommended not to do it, in the winter,” he said about work that should be done in milder weather. “Because of these deadlines, we can’t do that. It is going to cost us more money.”

Most people would be happy to get out of a jail. Local restaurateur John Klockow isn’t one of them. He and his wife Kerry have spent the past 12 years successfully running the Pen Café and Bistro inside the old B.C. penitentiary gatehouse on Governor’s Court. They reluctantly decided to close up shop recently after losing a lengthy legal dispute with their landlord, PF Media, which bought the historic Sapperton building six years ago and operates a corporate translation service on the premises. Their business relationship turned sour several years ago after plans to expand the restaurant into available space next door fell apart. The spot is now occupied instead by the Sunshine Montessori Preschool. “The owner, Jim Gee, told me a year ago that he wouldn’t renew my lease when it was up in five years,” said Klockow. “I was really stuck between a rock and a hard place. Do you tell your staff and have them all go in bits and pieces, or do I wait five years to close and then walk away?” The decision has left 15 workers at the restaurant unemployed. Gee, however, claims he never gave Klockow any such ultimatum and that the restaurant’s sudden closure May 18 came as a surprise. “What he is telling you is absolutely incorrect,” said Gee. “He’s got an automatic five-year rollover with two automatic one-year extensions for a total of 12 years.” Bailiffs have since been summoned

Open no more: Signs in the window at the former Pen Café inform visitors that the restaurant has been closed. to secure the former jailhouse’s doors, but Gee said the decision to call them wasn’t acrimonious. “He shut his doors, and I had to secure the premises,” said Gee, adding that he hasn’t been in touch with the Klockows since. “He has a small amount of shortfall in his rent, but the amount isn’t insurmountable, it’s a very small amount of money.” Gee said there are no immediate plans for new tenants to move in and he would like to see the restaurant reopen. “We would prefer him to contact us and see what the dispute is,” said Gee. “Apart from that, we have no further comment.” Along with the legal dispute over the failed expansion, Klockow gave a long list of alleged grievances that include having the heat turned off

to downstairs washrooms, suffering three break-ins due to the lights being cut off early in the morning, common area fees shooting up and public access to the restaurant impeded due to neglected outdoor steps being blockaded for the past several years rather than repaired. “I’ve decided it’s best to move on and cut my losses,” said Klockow, who added the silver lining is that he will finally be able to spend some time with his 10-year-old son this summer after years of working long weeks inside the restaurant. “I have grounds for appeal, but how much money do you throw at something? We just spent four full days in court with a lawyer charging $250 an hour. As a small business, I don’t have a ton of extra money to throw around.”

Police warn about scammer

The New Westminster Police Service is warning residents about an old scam that is rearing its head once again. On May 23, at 4:15 p.m., a man was knocking on doors in the 300 block of Richmond Street. The man described as Caucasian, approximately 35 and wearing khakis, asked a resident for cash, stating he was in a car accident and needed money for his vehicle to be towed. When the resident offered to contact the police on his behalf, the man immediately left the area. “Crooks and fraudsters like to rely on the kind hearts of Good Samaritans,” said Sgt. Gary Weishaar in a press release. “Don’t bite the bait.”

Weishaar pointed out that not everybody who knocks on your door is suspicious. In cases where a person is at your door representing a charity, check their credentials. “All accredited charitable agencies supply their staff with identifying credentials,” said Weishaar. “You may even want to contact the organization that they represent to confirm they are whom they claim they are.” Police are continuing to look for the man involved in the May 23 incident, and anybody else who may have come into contact with him can call the police nonemergency line at 604-525-5411. alau@royalcityrecord.com

ormer New Westminster MLA Joyce Murray has joined the army of redheads who are honoring the memory of Eva Markvoort. Murray, a former New Westminster resident and MLA who now lives and represents Vancouver Quadra, has spoken of Eva in the House of Commons. She recently dyed her hair red as part of the Reddy for a Cure fundraiser for cystic fibrosis. “I want to congratulate the organizers of Reddy For a Cure. The campaign’s effectiveness can be measured by the amount of times I’ve been asked about my new hair colour,” Murray said. “If dying my hair red raises awareness of CF on Parliament Hill and leads others to help, then I am honoured to participate.” Murray, a longtime friend of the Markvoort family, will attend the Great Strides Walk for cystic fibrosis on May 30. Eva passed away March 27, having been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of one. She had undergone a double lung transplant in October 2007 but later went into chronic rejection. Eva, the 2002 Miss New Westminster Ambassador, was the subject of the award-winning documentary 65_RedRoses. BRANDFX, a communications agency based in North Vancouver, has teamed up with Suki’s hair salons and the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on the Reddy For a Cure fundraising campaign, which seeks to raise money and awareness about Cystic Fibrosis and recognize Eva. Kim Bowie, who is BRANDFX’s public relations and social media manager, was a close friend of Eva. “Eva’s legacy lives in all of us, and together, we will work towards finding a cure for CF,” Bowie said. “Eva’s dream was for CF standing for ‘Cure Found.’ It is our goal to carry that dream for her until it does.” The “Reddy For a Cure” project launched on May 16 at the unveiling of the 65 Red Roses art piece that was spearheaded by local artist Angela Au Hemphill. Two Royal City mothers are hoping to make coupon clipping and saving money cool again. Heather McGrath and Danielle Connelly are the co-owners of Mother of a Deal, a deal-hunting website with a local bent. Since Connelly started the company in 2009, the little company has grown to having more than 1,500 subscribers to its regular newsletter and more than 10,000 visitors per month to the company’s website, www. motherofadeal.com. “We’ve also got more than 1,500 followers on Facebook and Twitter,” said McGrath, who used to work for a local credit union before deciding for a better work-life balance with husband Patrick and daughters Leah, 3, and Neve, 21 months. In fact, McGrath’s involvement in Mother of a Deal came from an e-mail Connelly sent out earlier this year. “I’d been using the website to find deals, and Danielle sent out a note saying she would probably be scaling back and trying to spend more time with her own family,” said McGrath. “I thought this was such a great service that I had to help where I could. “We got together for lunch, and we hit it

Realtor Melodie Coelho is gearing up for her second Ride to Conquer Cancer. Coelho is participating in the two-day cycling journey in June that will see her bike from Surrey to Seattle to raise funds for the B.C. Cancer Foundation. She was part of a team from Re/Max Advantage Realty that participated in last year’s event, but this year she’s traveling solo. Coelho’s great aunt lost a quick yet courageous battle with pancreatic cancer in March, just five days

before her 75th birthday. She passed away less than a month after being diagnosed. Coelho’s mother-in-law was recently diagnosed with colon cancer and is undergoing treatment. The news has hit the family hard, as her father-in-law passed away from cancer 13 years ago. Coelho, an associate broker with Re/Max Advantage, is holding a fundraiser at Rivers Reach Pub on June 7 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and include a beverage and pizza. “We will have a raffle for a signed Daniel Sedin jersey and some smaller prizes,” she said. “All of the money will be going to support my ride. It’s a pretty big event. It is 1,600 people. Each person has to raise $2,500 just to ride.”

While she was a bit “freaked out” before her first ride last year, Coelho is looking forward to this year’s Ride to Conquer Cancer. “The whole experience is really amazing,” she said. “It’s really quite a moving experience.” For tickets, call Coelho at 604-526-2888. Tour theatrical history OUR PAST

ecently there have been some discussions, some more vociferous than others, about theatres and similar venues in New Westminster. Massey Theatre and the Burr (the old Columbia Theatre) have been most prominent. Other performance spaces that have been in the news include the Bernie Legge Theatre, Douglas College and Queens Avenue United Church. These, and a few others, are current and well-used, but historically this city has an interesting “theatre” story. Looking back to the early part of the 1900s, and of course to the 1800s, and the first selection of rooms and meeting halls that were used for presentations, performances and gatherings, we find that the list is really quite lengthy. The places ranged all the way from a saloon that could become a “theatre space” to a large opera house. In fact, there were two opera houses. Mr. Herring built his own opera house on Carnarvon Street, near Sixth Street, and it served well for many years until it was destroyed in the city’s Great Fire of 1898. The city then got involved with a new large theatre constructed at the corner of Lorne and Victoria streets. It only lasted until the ‘20s, as it wasn’t a very sound structure, but in its time it was a busy place. It featured opera, musical theatre, orchestral concerts, oratory presentations, political meetings and even wrestling matches. Columbia Street had many theatre spaces for vaudeville and similar type performances, as well as early motion pictures. Before the Columbia Theatre came along in 1927 and set a newer, more modern standard, there were the Crystal, City, Royal and an early Edison

or two. A newer Edison Theatre was renamed the Paramount, which is still downtown today. One of the early spaces was a converted livery stable and it was said to have an “interesting fragrance” in warm weather. Apart from the early saloons providing places for a play or concert, there was the Hyack Hall. Most

of the time it was a fire hall, but other times, without the horses but filled with chairs and benches, it was a place for concerts and meetings and even oral school examinations. The award-winning Wine Factory has been serving New Westminster for 15 years. One of its shining stars is its retail sales associate, Arlynne Holowchak. Chelsea Coates The Tanning Studio Chelsea Coates came into the tanning industry with a wealth of experience in the corporate world. She began her career working for a software company. Rain can’t stop May Day New Westminster’s May Day festivities went off almost without a hitch on Wednesday despite the rain. Members of the May Queen suite were escorted into Queen’s Park Stadium with the usual pomp, accompanied by local politicians,

dignitaries and school trustees. The only tiny glitch occurred during one of the anvil salutes by the Ancient and Honourable Hyack Anvil Battery – a piece of shrapnel flew across the baseball infield, but nobody was hurt.

Walt Weaver’s number is up on June 1. The New Westminster junior A Salmonbellies president will have his No. 6 jersey officially retired in a ceremony during the first intermission of the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League game against the Coquitlam Adanacs at Queen’s Park Arena Tuesday night. The dedication ceremony will celebrate not only Weaver’s five seasons as a player with the junior ‘Bellies, but also his administrative contributions as team governor and president. “It’s certainly an honour and humbling to think of how it’s being prepared and supported. I hope they will think of this as part of our tradition,” said Weaver. “I certainly didn’t come back into lacrosse for this to happen.” Weaver has played more junior A games than any other ‘Bellie, and his 419 total points in five seasons, including three as its team captain, still stands 10th all-time. Weaver led the Pacific Junior A Lacrosse League in scoring in both 1970 and ‘71. His best year was 1970 when he tallied 52 goals and 122 points. In 1969, Weaver also scored a career-high 56 markers for New Westminster in the final season of the old Inter-City junior league. During that time, Weaver was picked up to play in three Minto Cups, winning a Canadian junior A lacrosse title with the

Into the rafters: New Westminster junior A Salmonbellie president, Walt Weaver, will have his No. 6 jersey ofﬁcially retired in a ceremony at Queen’s Park Arena on Tuesday, June 1. Richmond Roadrunners in 1971. But Weaver’s off-floor contributions are every bit as accomplished. Along with Forest Day, Harry Ferguson and Bryan Jones, Weaver took over control of a struggling junior Salmonbellie franchise in 2006 and has turned it into the thirdhighest-ranked team in the country in a recent weekly national poll. “I really did it because I remember what lacrosse did for me. It’s a great age to be involved with it. We want kids to experience that. It’s a lifestyle to be

involved as a team on the national stage and to have some success,” Weaver said. Some of that success came in 2007, when New Westminster was awarded the hosting rights for the Minto Cup. The Salmonbellies upset the Six Nations Arrows in their opening game and lost a one-goal decision to the eventual finalist from Burnaby in round robin play. New Westminster then lost a heartbreaking 65 decision to the Eastern champions in the semifinal playoff.

“I think (hosting the Minto) turned things around,” Weaver added. “As an organization, we really grew there, and it gave us a lot of credibility.” New Westminster has been a factor in league play ever since, and that is something that the junior organization prides itself on, Weavers said. Drafted No. 2 behind Dave Durante in the firstever junior league draft in 1972, Weaver refused to report to the Victoria team that acquired him. In fact, he sat out an entire season while two

other teams dealt him in trades before he was finally shipped back to his beloved Salmonbellies by Coquitlam in 1974. “I was proud. I wanted to be a Salmonbellie. There is such a strong feeling of community in our organzation,” he said. “There’s a culture of lacrosse. We adjusted that pride and tradition to our organization.” Weaver played five seasons with the senior Salmonbellies, helping them win three Mann Cups before he retired, choosing ◗Number Page 33

Locals make a splash at water polo nationals The Pacific Storm A team finished just out of the medals at the 16-and-under national club water polo championships in Regina last weekend. Matthew Hart of Burnaby was named to the all-championship all-star team for the fourth-place Storm following the meet. Pac Storm lost 6-2 to the Ottawa Titans in the consolation final. CAMO defeated DDO 1 5-4 in the all-Quebec final. Hart scored seven goals in championship play, including four in the Storm’s 14-3 win over Edmonton in the quarter-finals.

Storm teammates Marco Pudar and Max Handfield of Burnaby scored two goals apiece for the A team at the nationals. U-16 national team pool player Jackson Schaefer of New Westminster had a solid showing for the 12th-place Fraser Valley club team. Schaefer tallied 11 goals and was named a star in three of Fraser Valley’s matches, including a fourgoal first-star outing in a 12-5 victory over Calgary Black in the team’s first game. Kyle Jung scored a pair of goals, while Bobby Chieng played

in goal for Fraser Valley. In Surrey, Maryann Slama helped lead the Pacific Storm A team to seventh place at the Canadian national under-16 girls’ water polo championships. Slama scored a total of five goals and garnered two game stars, including a first star nod following a three-goal performance in a 14-4 win over Pac Storm B in the final placement match. Goalie Shanel Mack of New Westminster and longtime Burnaby Barracuda swimmer Natalie Murao also shared in the seventh-place finish. Mack posted

an earlier shutout in an 8-0 win over DDO 2 in earlier round robin play. Pac B keeper Erica Marquez of Burnaby was a third star in a 7-2 loss to Ottawa. Riel Antes-Schaefer and Jenna Melton of Burnaby also pitched in towards the Storm’s eighth-place finish. Across the pool, Katerina Schwab of Burnaby scored two goals in the Fraser Valley B team’s 7-4 loss to Hamilton in the final game for 12th and 14th placing. The Calgary Renegades A defeated CAMO 9-4 in the final.

The Burnaby Lake Rugby Club is putting its best foot forward into B.C. Rugby Elite Youth 7s program this summer. The Central Valley club will be hosting one of seven new sanctioned seven-aside rugby tournaments in the Pacific Northwest this summer as part of B.C. Rugby’s 7s Series. Simon Fraser University’s Highland Summer 7s tourney, held in midJuly is one of two existing tournaments that will be incorporated into the new program. The initiative is part of a new direction in rugby since the men’s and women’s sevens’ game was added to the list of Olympic sports for the 2016 Games. B.C. club teams that compete in four or more sanctioned tournaments will accrue points toward crowning a provincial men’s and women’s champion at the completion of the event at the Cowichan 7s in September. The series kicks off on Vancouver Island with the James Bay Buccaneer 7s on June 12. Other venues include Brockton Oval in Stanley Park, Bellingham, Abbotsford, North Vancouver and South Surrey. B.C. Rugby has also implemented an elite youth program geared to youngsters 11 to 16 years of age, who aspire to play the seven-man game at the provincial and national level. Program funding has enabled B.C. Rugby to retain the services of Shane Thompson, one of Canada’s most decorated international 7s players, as the program’s high-performance coach. Thompson played in 55 international 7s tournaments before turning his efforts to coaching Canada’s national team. He will be assisted by director Doug Tate. “With rugby 7s recently being added to the 2016 Olympic Games, this age range has become the most important group to focus on in the immediate future,” Tate said in a B.C. Rugby press release.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail? This is a thought provoking question, Deb Little particularly on the career front. Often we get stuck in our limited perspectives of the world and who we are in it. This is because we only see where we are right now, or with limited possibility. We don’t believe in ourselves and our abilities enough to dare to take a chance. What if you CAN have the job of your dreams? Saying this does not suggest that you throw caution to the wind, quit your day job, and go join a rock and roll band if you have only just started guitar lessons. What I am pointing out is your ability to create any opportunity for yourself, when the desire to do it is compelling enough. Feeling compelled will increase your likelihood of success. How do we know when a career might be compelling? Ah, another great question. An opportunity is compelling when it makes you feel energized and alive. Perhaps being an astronaut is of interest to you. While it is not always possible to jump into a spaceship to be able to try space travel, it is important to look at the underlying experiences that excite you about the job. In the case of space travel, it might be risk taking; adventure; problem solving; or a keen interest in science that stir in your belly. Alternatively, it might be your desire to take the road less travelled; to work in small confined spaces; or the tranquility you feel being far away from it all. Gill won the individual uneven bars and balance beam, and was third on vault and fourth on floor. Omega clubmate Shae Zamardi placed third. Tsang won the individual vault with a 14.900 score and placed third on floor exercises. The 1996-born Tsang also placed sixth on the uneven bars and ninth on balance beam.

That all changed when he was approached to fill the shoes of a retiring Murray Lehman as president of the junior lacrosse club. “I guess, the truth of the matter is it takes me back to when I played,” Weaver said. “It’s like going back in time and we’re helping those kids succeed. “It’s not about me. It’s what we’ve done as a group. That’s the rewarding part,

working with them all and getting to see my old friends.” This Tuesday, Weaver’s two daughters and son will join him for the special retirement of his jersey number at Queen’s Park. His mother, who never really wanted him to be involved in such a violent pasttime, will also be at his side, just the way Weaver would want it. “I’ve done a lot of things in my life, but it’s been about the people around me,” he said. On June 1, there will likely be a whole lot of people at Queen’s Park Arena to lend their support.
