The Royal City is number 2 in the country for federal parolees per capita living in the city.

According to data obtained by The Vancouver Sun, the Royal City has 167.4 parolees per 100,000 residents, second only to Victoria, which topped the list with a per capita rate of 187 parolees per 100,000 residents.

The data reveals there are so many ex-cons living in Victoria and New Westminster that their share of parolees is more than six times the national average.

New Westminster MLA Dawn Black said Royal City residents don’t need to live in fear.

“I’ve lived in this community for a long time, and my children and seven grandchildren all live here,” she said. “I feel very secure living in New Westminster, and so does my family.”

Chilliwack, at 94, and Prince George, at 79, are also among the top 10 cities nationally for parolees, both with more than three times the national rate of 25.

There are roughly 8,500 former federal inmates in Canada on day parole, full parole or statutory release. While some are required to live in a halfway house, most are free to live on their own, anywhere from a rented apartment to a relative’s basement.

Why some cities have so many more parolees than others isn’t entirely clear, but it appears linked to the number of halfway houses and parole offices in a city.

Sara Parkes, a spokeswoman for Correctional Services Canada, noted in an interview with the Vancouver Sun that those cities with the most parolees also tend to be those with halfway houses and parole offices.

The draft Financial Plan incorporates a proposed 2.98% property tax increase for 2011. This increase is required to fund a number of budget challenges in 2011 including collective agreement increases, operational and inflationary increases.

Utility operating budgets for 2011 include the Electrical, Water, Sewer and Solid Waste Utilities.

Utility rate increases are 11.0% for Water, 5.4% for Sewer and 6.0% for Solid Waste to address the increases in the 2011 Metro Vancouver rates charged to the City. The Electrical Utility rates for 2011 will be set in March / April and will follow BC Hydro’s rate increases to the City.

Use your head to help the homeless

Royal City residents who want to help stay warm this winter while helping out with the youth homelessness problem at the same time are urged to toque up this week as part of the annual Toque Tuesday cross-country fundraising event.

Toque Tuesday happens on, as you’d expect, Tuesday (Feb. 8) and is put on by Toronto-based Raising the Roof, Canada’s only national charity dedicated to long-term solutions to youth homelessness.

Now in its 14th year, the fundraiser provides a chance to keep heads and hearts warm by “putting a cap on homelessness” in participating cities across the country. The warm winter hats – available in gray, red or black and with a small campaign logo – will once again be on sale for a minimum donation of $10 at locations throughout New West.

“It’s been wonderful,” said Dave Brown, manager of community outreach for the Lookout Emergency Aid Society, about the traditional local support for the February campaign. “I find the seniors’ community, more than any, really steps up

to the plate for this kind of initiative. … For seven square miles, it never ceases to amaze me what is done on this turf.”

Brown said that toques will be available at Douglas College, Royal City Centre, the New Westminster Public Library, outside the downtown Starbucks and at both SkyTrain stations throughout the day.

People can also pay the extra $3 freight and order online at www. raisingtheroof.org. Tax receipts for donations of over $20 are also available through the website.

Since 1997, Raising the Roof has allocated over $3 million to more than 117 partner agencies across Canada working to reduce homelessness at the community level.

Organizers say the purchase of each individual hat can make a tangible difference in someone’s life; one toque can buy bus tickets or clothes for youth, 10 can help put an individual into supportive housing for a week, while 200 toques can help somebody go back to school and learn new skills for a year. According to Raising the Roof, one-third of Canada’s homeless population is between the ages of 16 and 24.

Trustee says legal opinion ‘political’ attack

School trustee Lori Watt had told her close friends and family that she wasn’t going to run for a fourth term as a New Westminster school trustee.

But after local parent Patrick O’Connor commissioned a legal opinion from Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP partner Roy W. Millen about a perceived conflict-of-interest situation involving her, Watt is coming out fighting and saying she will not be pushed out of office by O’Connor.

“This type of nonsense has me seriously considering running again,” she told The Record on Thursday morning.

“Here’s the thing that’s laughable. I told my family months ago I wasn’t intending on running, but Patrick O’Connor has frustrated me so much. … This is a gentleman who has run unsuccessfully before. I’m a three-term trustee, and this is a politically motivated attack.”

Watt’s ire comes after O’Connor started circulating a legal opinion dated Jan. 24, 2011.

O’Connor asked for the opinion because he believes Watt, as an employee at CUPE B.C.’s Burnaby head office, is in a potential conflict because she has the ability to vote on two matters: the approval of a new collective agreement with CUPE Local 409 and a motion to ban bottled water in school district facilities.

According to Millen’s legal opinion, “Ms. Watt would be in a conflict of interest in respect of both matters due to her employment. … If Ms. Watt votes on either matter, a court could remove her from office.”

In the legal opinion, Millen bases his findings on six relevant facts that were provided to him, but he adds the footnote that “if any of these facts are inaccurate or change, please advise us promptly as our opinion may also change.”

Watt said she believes several of the facts are in error, and she is already getting her own legal opinion.

“I can read the School Act, and I can say I’m not in conflict,” said Watt. “I just find it incredibly frustrating that somebody like Mr. O’Connor would engage in such a

malicious personal attack on me. He’s attacked me for nine years now.”

For O’Connor, he believes the legal opinion speaks for itself and that he was forced to go to this extraordinary measure because the only other mechanism for him to register his concerns was to go to the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

“Trustee Watt’s failure to acknowledge that her employment with CUPE B.C. represents a conflict of interest wherever and whenever school district matters have an impact on the interests of CUPE B.C. is very troubling to me,” O’Connor wrote in the cover letter he attached to the legal opinion that was e-mailed to all school trustees and the Education Minister. “It is truly unfortunate that this conflict of interest has gone unacknowledged for so long.”

In a subsequent conversation with The Record, O’Connor said he hoped Watt would publicly acknowledge her conflict of interest and then the matter would be done.

But if that doesn’t happen, O’Connor doesn’t intend to stop.

“I don’t want to, but if I have to, I will pursue it to the Supreme Court of British Columbia,” he said. “There’s no other mechanism for me to address this.”

Trustee Jim Goring said he had received the e-mailed legal opinion, and it’s an issue he thinks the board has to look at seriously.

Chinese reconciliation work earns city kudos

The City of New Westminster has been honoured for its humanitarian efforts regarding Chinese Canadians.

Xiang Pu, president of the Canadian Community Services Association, recently presented the city with a certificate at a banquet in

Vancouver.

“This certificate is presented to the mayor of the City of New Westminster and city council in recognition and appreciation of your humanitarian efforts and positive contribution to the community,” said the award handed out Jan. 29.

“Your hard work and dedication is sincerely appreciated.”

Blair Fryer, the city’s manager of communications, said the group is comprised of Chinese-Canadian business people.

“This was the major award of the evening given out. No other city received such an award. It was in recognition of all of the work done on the reconciliation process over the last couple

of years, as well as the work we do between the friendship and sister city relations in Asia.”

Mayor Wayne Wright accepted the certificate on the city’s behalf at the association’s banquet that was attended by hundreds of people.

“It’s quite gratifying to get it,” he said. “We were

the only city to get it.”

The Chinese reconciliation process that was undertaken by the City of New Westminster was the first such process taken by a municipality in Canada.

Research done by city staff confirmed that city council acted in a discriminatory matter, particularly by restricting employment

opportunities and by asking senior governments to pass discriminatory laws.

In July 2010, the City of New Westminster made a formal apology to the Chinese community for these injustices.

“We are the only council that has ever done it,” Wright said. “They were appreciative.”

Land title workers vote to strike

Land title workers in New Westminster, Victoria and Kamloops voted 105 to 2 in favour of striking, but that doesn’t mean those offices will be behind picket lines immediately.

The vote was taken by members of the B.C. Government Employees’ Union who have been out of contract since September 2010. There are 54 unionized workers at the New Westminster office.

Talks between the two sides broke down just before Christmas and the union members want to kickstart negotiations.

“Our hope really is that the employer comes back to the table for productive negotiations,” said union communications officer Oliver Rohlfs. “I think with a 98 per cent vote, it’s a pretty strong signal to management.

“We hope a strike can be averted.”

Rohlfs said the two key issues that remain unresolved are vacation scheduling and wages.

“There is an inflexibility with vacation scheduling that we would like addressed, as well as wages,” said Rohlfs.

The Land Title and Survey Authority of B.C. is a statutory corporation responsible for managing the land title and survey systems throughout the province. Its services are provided primarily to lawyers, public notaries, land surveyors, registry agents and other real estate professionals, with 116 BCGEU members working at land title offices in New Westminster, Kamloops and Victoria.

needs to generate a policy on this,” said Goring. “With the policy we’ve passed, it’s the individual trustee’s responsibility to determine their position and act accordingly.

“I suggest the points made in the opinion are certainly not iffy. … The lawyer states his points very strongly and I think it bears a lot of weight. … I would definitely pay attention and act accordingly.”

In Millen’s legal opinion, “Ms. Watt has a pecuniary interest in the contract between the Board and Local 409 by virtue of her employment with CUPE B.C. …

Similarly, Ms. Watt has a pecuniary interest in the bottled water matter by virtue of her employment with CUPE B.C. … If Ms. Watt took a position on the board that conflicted with CUPE B.C.’s policy, she would risk negative consequences in her employment.

“The interest of CUPE B.C. (and therefore Ms. Watt) in these matters is

neither remote nor insignificant … If Ms. Watt votes on either matter, a court would probably remove her from office unless she can prove that she acted in good faith in reliance on a legal opinion.”

For Watt, her frustration also comes from having to expend energy on this matter while there are other, more pressing issues, she’d like to concentrate on.

“This is taking me and the board away from dealing with our budget issues and on the capital building project,” she said. “That’s what we should be focusing on, that’s what we were elected to do.”

Our justice system is a frequent target of criticism. But most are unlikely to have ever seen the inside of a courtroom, let alone watched a trial unfold.

It’s worth noting that the ban on broadcasting audio and images from courthouses is government policy. The Supreme Court’s policy merely upholds it.

Attorney General (and ChilliwackHope MLA) Barry Penner has indicated that he is open to cameras in courtrooms.

But despite being the one man with the power to reverse the medieval policy, he hasn’t actually done anything about it.

Penner is known for his love of photo opportunities. Surely he wouldn’t argue that their omnipresence has detracted from his ability to perform his job.

It’s time for him to show the same lens love when it comes to courtroom cameras.

Stop train movement at night Dear Editor:

One suggestion in the ongoing dispute about noise between New Westminster’s Quayside residents and railway operators is to have train activities eliminated at night – say, from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The rail people don’t seem too keen on that idea.

In recent weeks, however, the Southern Railway of B.C. swing bridge over the North Arm to Queensborough has been undergoing major maintenance work, with rail traffic suspended during the day shift so maintenance workers can get on with it.

Despite these restrictions, the trains seem to do all the hauling required of them.

So to allow those residents living in the bridge area to escape the nightly rumblings and whistling, all the rail people need do is reverse the current arrangement and run the trains only during the day, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Same amount of hauling time

in each 24-hour period. Where’s the problem?

And if it works for the Southern Railway, why not for other Quayside rail operations?

Child crisis is everyone’s problem

Dear Editor:

The headlines continue in response to representative Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond’s aggregate review of 21 infant deaths in B.C. I am glad that is so. As chair of the B.C. Association of Social Workers’ child welfare committee, it is very easy to endorse the recommendations in the report. The research, the stories and the analysis are stark and compelling.

In all honesty, I have struggled to find a response that can add to the arguments and dialogue.

on solid research on essential changes in law, policy, service delivery and practice have been presented to all levels of government and the public for many decades. If even a small percentage of those “facts” and the resulting recommendations had been acted upon years ago, we would all feel the benefits and families would be experiencing much better realities today.

It baffles and in fact stuns me that it seems so easy for too many of us to ignore those living in poverty and unsafe conditions to the extent that children die. We don’t want to look at the harsh realities our values, politics, practices and priorities have created. Parents still are blamed, or addictions or mental illness or family history.

I have been working in the social work field for four decades. Forty years ago, we knew that solving poverty would benefit all. We knew it was never going to be as simple as creating jobs. We knew we Canadians had to shift our attitudes and perspectives and join a movement to end poverty, violence and inequities.

We had to mend the old wrongs of colonialism. We had to face our classism and our personal contribution to the perpetuation of impoverishment and injustice and prejudice. We all play a role in letting the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and in allowing government after government to make promises or offer Band-Aids or test “new” theories and initiatives.

No one ministry, one social worker, one health worker can solve all the issues that contribute to the death, abuse or neglect of children. Responsibility for the depth of poverty faced by so many children and families in B.C. lies with all of us.

We have the power, the right and the responsibility to insist on and support action on Mary Ellen’s recommendations, on First Call’s demands to end child poverty, on the bottomless pit of research that clearly shows that universal childcare, safe affordable housing, living wages, a fair minimum wage and welfare benefits are essential.

For the Ministry of Children and Family

Development, the solutions are complex yet possible. It is not as simple as reducing case load size. The quality of social work practice must be high and consistent provincewide.

This requires professional social work education, solid hiring procedures, and ongoing access to training “on the job.”

There are times when a caseload of three families can fill every working hour and other times when a caseload of 30 might be manageable. Systems must be in place to manage those unpredictable fluctuations in need for intervention. Access to skilled and supportive supervision is essential for social workers. Access for families to strong, well-funded, community social and health services is also essential and we are very aware of those service disparities across the province.

Investment in children and families, in ending poverty and violence, is the only ethical and socially and economically prudent route for any progressive government to take. The benefits will be felt in all sectors: health, justice, education, child safety.

Invest in prevention must be our call to all levels of government.

Re: New park irks priest. The Record, Jan. 29.

As a 28-year resident of Queensborough, I was deeply offended by the remarks made in your recent front-page article.

Rev. Hughes suggesting that this park was designed to block the view from his windows “done deliberately, to provoke” or was “anti-Catholic” is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a very long time.

So many people in the community have worked tirelessly for many years to bring positive changes for the residents, and this park is just one of the many improvements we are seeing.

I am thankful to those people and hope that Rev. Hughes will come to see that there was no target on him or the church, just people doing their best to bring improvements to this growing community.

New Westminster, a city with fewer than 60,000 residents, has two halfway houses.

Both cities also have parole offices.

The halfway houses for men in New Westminster are Genesis House and Maria Keary Cottage on Carnarvon Street, with both of them operated by the non-profit Westcoast Genesis Society. The Elizabeth Fry Society also runs Columbia Place on East Columbia Street for women.

Incoming New Westminster Police Service Chief Const. Dave Jones said the numbers, while disproportionately high, are not a cause for big concern.

“The numbers are high, but the thing with parolees is we know where they are,” said Jones. “They have to report to a supervisor, and there’s a record of their activities.”

Jones said that while the police are aware that the numbers may be high, police have a good handle on the situation.

“We have a good working relationship with the halfway houses, and we have not had problems with them in the past.”

In fact, each summer, the Westcoast Genesis Society puts on a popular community barbecue that allows parolees a chance to interact with the public.

“The picnic put on by Genesis is one of my favourite events of the year,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “When I read the (Sun) story, I thought it was scare-mongering. Our crime rate is going down, and we have shown that we offer a city and the supports for people.”

Tim Veresh, head of the John Howard Society of B.C., which runs several halfway houses, said the location of such facilities can have a big impact on where parolees live even after they’re no longer required to reside at one.

That’s because most parolees spend their first few months of freedom in a halfway house, and those months are crucial to building their post-prison life.

“They go to school, they get a part-time job, they end up with a full-time job,” said Veresh – in short, they start making the kinds of community ties experts say are essential to an offender’s successful reintegration into society. As a result, many parolees decide to stay in the same city.

“They’re pretty much laying roots. And that’s what we want them to do,” said Veresh. “It would make sense that they would probably stay.”

And Wright has no problem with that if parolees become productive members of society.

“We have some of the most affordable housing in the Lower Mainland and people are choosing to stay in our city,” said Wright. “If people have changed, if they get jobs in the city and want to stay here, I see that as a positive.”

Film screening at farmers’ market meeting T

he Royal City Farmers Market is inviting community members to attend the first-ever screening of The Clean Bin Project in New Westminster.

The market is holding its annual general meeting on Feb. 5 at Holy Trinity Cathedral, which is located at 514 Carnarvon St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for citizens to register and buy an annual membership for $10.

Councillor goes back to school

Coun. Jonathan Cote has headed back to class.

Following the Christmas break, the city councillor started the Urban Studies graduate program at Simon Fraser University. The program’s courses include topics such as urban housing policy and urban planning.

“The first course that I am enrolled with this January is urban transportation, which should be very interesting given the transportation challenges we face here in New Westminster,” he said.

Cote will be taking the program part-time. He anticipates it will take three to four years to complete.

“I think, not only will I benefit from the program, but I think my experience on city council will bring an interesting perspective to the program as well,” he said.

Cote, who is in his second term as a city councillor, thinks the graduate

program will provide a great opportunity to explore some of the leading edge research in the field of urban development.

“In the coming years, cities are going to be at the forefront of almost all economic, social and environmental issues,” he said. “I believe this program will allow me to develop a better understanding of the critical issues we will be facing in the future which in turn will help me put forward solutions at the council table.”

Cote said he is paying for his graduate studies, not the city, as has been rumoured.

Gauld and Cara Roth teamed up to offer the Vancouver Raw Cooking School, which has been asked by River Market to provide a weekly program for seniors. “The strength of an HRA lies primarily in its flexibility and in its ability to be site-specific; however, it is this very flexibility that can create a lack of clarity from one project to another,” said the report.

The group is an artist-run, non-profit society designed to celebrate, support, encourage and promote visual artists in the community.

The society just got started and is holding its official launch with an exhibition Feb. 11 to 13 at River Market.

The launch will feature members’ work, with each member allowed to enter up to three pieces for free. The only catch?

Everything must be for sale for under $100.

Fergusson, who’s the group’s president, noted that the under$100 theme was chosen to make the exhibition as inclusive as possible for everyone in the group, both the hobby artists and the professionals.

She points out that, for many of the professional artists, that’s not the price range they’re usually working in – which is challenging them to think in new ways.

Hollenstein, for one, admits the under-$100 limit was a challenge. He works off-and-on as a full-time professional artist, though right now he’s doing some contract work and filling the rest of his life with art.

For the launch, he decided to create three small Cubist pieces.

“It’s not really my style, but I like it,” he says.

Nearly all the members of the group agreed to take on the challenge, something that thrills Fergusson immensely.

“I’m proud of everyone for doing it,” she says. hat she got such good response to the group’s first effort reinforces for Fergusson what she thought all along: that there has long been a need for an artists’ group in New West.

She’s new to the Royal City, having moved here just about a year-and-a-half ago. She took a job at Van Dop Gallery when she first arrived, and her work there – which included helping to organize the Cultural Crawl – brought her into contact with many art-

“I started meeting more artists and finding that, to me, there was a need for one artist-run group to unify people,” she explains.

She sent e-mails out to artists around the city and started getting plenty of interest in the idea, so she figured it was worth a try.

Her philosophy, she says, was simple: “Let’s all promote ourselves together. There’s a lot of strength in pooling the resources and talent together.”

Rothenberger, who’s been in the city for just three years, was immediately on board with the idea. Her multi-faceted work as an artist, art instructor and artist’s model has brought her into contact with all kinds of artists and artist groups in other communities.

What she’s found, she says, is that artist-run guilds are very positive for the artists in their communities.

“They’re very good, they’re very productive,” she says. “The community in them is very strong. I’m thinking, why don’t we have something like this in New West? There’s lots of artists here.”

Fergusson points out the group is run by the artists, so whatever members want to do is what the group will do.

In the future, she’d like to see the group put on at least two juried shows a year and also offer some teaching – both in artistic areas and in the more practical side of the business, such as building portfolios and computer skills. or the moment, however, she’s concentrating her efforts on the launch exhibition. She hopes to see the community turn out to support the launch and see the kind of talent the city has to offer.

And she wants the exhibition to send out the message that “purchasing fine art, particularly local fine art, is within reach,” she says. “It’s getting people’s minds opening to the possibilities.”

The exhibition opens at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, and will remain open during the same hours as Donald’s Market, until Sunday at 8 p.m. ◗ For more information, check out New West Artists online.

Royal City artist earns prestigious award THE LIVELY CITY JULIE MACLELLAN

A

New Westminster artist has received a prestigious honour from the Federation of Canadian Artists.

Angie Au Hemphill received a gold medal at the federation’s Spilsbury Medal Show on Granville Island in December.

The Spilsbury Medal Show is an annual juried exhibition open only to signature members of the artists’ federation.

Angie was honoured for her acrylic painting Christchurch Oxford.

Angie, who was born in Hong Kong and moved to Canada in 1973, is represented by the Van Dop Gallery in New West.

“Her latest work captures the vibrancy of a scene by distilling it into precisely placed blocks of solid and transparent colour,” notes a press release from the gallery.

These days, Angie works from her home studio in New Westminster.

She’s a big supporter of the New Westminster Heritage Preservation Society and has painted many heritage homes for the City of New Westminster, as well as for commissions from homeowners.

She serves on the board of directors of the Federation of Canadian Artists and has twice

received its Award of Excellence. Her works are held by collectors in Asia, the States, Europe and across Canada.

Congratulations to Angie for her latest honour.

Culture Days

Also from the art front, a New Westminster gallery owner has been announced as the programmer of the 2011 B.C. Culture Days.

Trudy Van Dop will take on the role for this year’s celebration of the arts, which will happen Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and 2.

Culture Days is a Canada-wide celebration of the arts. Last year, some 75 B.C. organizations and art-

ists took part in three days of open-house events and activities. But there wasn’t a provincial organizer – and this year, the effort will be coordinated across the province.

Kevin Dale McKeown, the Alliance for Arts and Culture’s director of communications, will serve as the B.C. coordinator.

Trudy said the provincewide celebration will be a positive one.

“Culture Days is an exciting way for us to build on existing relationships and create new connections with our audiences and communities,” she said in a press release. “I see this as an opportunity for us

Royal City skip looking for third masters curling title Rick Pughe skipped his way into the masters men’s provincial curling championships.

The Royal City club skip qualified first overall at the Region 11 championships at the Coquitlam Curling Club Jan. 29.

Pughe and third John Zwarych, second Jack Finnbogasson and lead Steve Lambert defeated Royal City clubmate Craig Lightbody 6-4 in the A event final with a deuce in the final end.

Pughe, who won two previous provincial master men’s titles in 2008 and ‘09 with Zwarych and Finnbogasson, had an easy time of it in Coquitlam, blanking two of the host rinks en route to the final.

Pughe opened with a 9-0 win in just five ends over Coquitlam club’s Gaynor Hagyard.

The Pughe foursome then downed John Munro of Abbotsford 10-3 in a six-ender, before making short work of Jim Skelton of Coquitlam in just three ends with one in the second and five in the third.

The Lightbody rink of third Don Burrus, second Ted Bassett and lead Roy Marao also made it to the final of the B qualifier, dropping a 6-3 decision to Milt Sinclair of Abbotsford.

Ken Watson of Richmond also qualified for the B.C. final, which will take place in Qualicum from March 10 to 13.

Sapperton gets comeback win The Sapperton Rovers were named team of the week in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League following a comeback 3-2 victory over ICST Pegasus last Saturday.

The Rovers rallied from a 2-0 half-time deficit behind stellar goalkeeping from Garth Legasse to claim their fifth win of the men’s premier division season.

Jay Gangnes got the Rovers started, taking a pass from Mark McQuade and slipping past a couple of Pegasus defenders to bring Sapperton to within a goal in the 52nd minute.

Gangnes also scored the game-winning

marker with his second of the game just before full time.

McQuade sparked the late comeback with a well-taken goal in the 82nd minute.

Omid Ahmadi set up McQuade for the marker.

But Legasse’s play, particularly in the first half, was key to keeping the Rovers withing striking distance.

Legasse was spectacular in the opening 45 minutes, stopping four clear-cut breakaway opportunites.

Sapperton faces Columbus at Empire Field on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.

Giants over most difficult hurdle The Northwest Giants can see a glimmer of light at the end of the B.C. major midget hockey league tunnel.

The Giants finished arguably the toughest segment of its remaining schedule, taking seven of a possible eight points from two of the toughest competing teams in the past two weeks.

The Giants edged fourth-place Greater Vancouver Canadians 43 last Saturday and then drew 3-3 on Sunday in a weekend series at Burnaby Winter Club.

League scoring leader Alex Kerfoot scored a natural hat trick, including the eventual game-winning tally, in a five-goal second period.

New Westminster ’s Mitch Fyffe started the middle-period rally.

The second period was another big period in Sunday’s matchup.

Trailing 2-0 after one period, Sam Reinhart sparked

a three-goal rally with a pair of back-to-back goals.

Fyffe gave the Giants a momentary 3-2 lead with his second goal in as many games.

Greater Vancouver salvaged a single point with a single goal in the final frame from Malcolm Glaholt.

The Burnaby-based Giants currently lead the pack with 22 wins and 49 points, one better than the Valley West Hawks.

The Giants also have two games in hand over the top five clubs.

Next up for the Giants is a two-game series with the 10th-place Kootenay Ice in Nelson.

The Grandview Steelers won the game, but slipped a point in the Pacific International Junior Hockey standings.

The junior B Steelers defeated conference doormat Squamish Wolf Pack 5-1 at Burnaby Winter Club last Sunday.

Linemates Danny Merth and Marko Gordic claimed the game’s first and second stars, respectively.

Merth and Gordic assisted on two of Grandview goals.

Mike Phillipson also had a two-point afternoon, including the eventual game-winner three minutes into the middle period.

Curtis Rocchetti opened the scoring with his 15th goal of the season. Rookie Robert Wilkinson tallied his 12th of the year on a late second-period power play.

VERNA AGNES (Graham) December 10, 1921 January 31, 2011

Died in her 90th year in Vernon, B.C. Verna was daughter of the late Christopher and Constance Graham. Predeceased by her husband David and sisters Constance Graham and Roberta Sargent, she is survived by sons Graham (Sally) of Vernon and Barry (Verna) of Airdrie, Alberta, sisters Willa Sandes, Shirley Bourke and Vivian Shepherd, and many nieces and nephews. Verna was born in Prince Rupert, B.C. and moved to New Westminster as a teenager and attended the Duke of Connaught high school. Vernon had been Verna’s home for many year but she loved coming back to New Westminster for what she called a 'Graham fix.'

There will be no funeral by request. The family will gather in May for a celebration of Verna’s life.
