One proposal includes a 15-storey condominium tower on the southeast corner of the lot rising above a three- to five-storey podium. The other includes a 10-storey tower on the same spot but the podium would be up to six stories in height. The 144 condos in the second proposal would only be 10 fewer than in the 15-storey design.

Both developments include 207,000 square feet of space, of which 43,000 square feet is below grade and made up largely of the underground supermarket, as well as retail wrapping the entire block, second-floor offices on Ambleside and two new pedestrian plazas.

Police close to naming woman found dead in NV

POLICE are zeroing in on the identity of a woman whose body was found in a quiet North Vancouver neighbourhood last week, according to a spokesman for the RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

“Police are working on a few more details prior to being able to release the name,” said Cpl. Dale Carr, speaking to the North Shore News Tuesday. “We realize it’s important to get that out to the community.”

Investigators were initially unable to determine a gender from the remains, but following an autopsy Thursday, they concluded the body was that of a Caucasian woman in her 40s, five feet two inches tall, about 100 pounds with brown hair. The team has since been combing through missing persons reports in an effort to peg down her identity.

Passerby spots fire, wakes family

A North Vancouver man is being hailed for his quick actions after he woke a family and helped get them out of their burning home.

The man, who has not been identified, was walking his dog in the 3800-block of Orlohma Place just after 6 a.m. on Monday when he spotted smoke billowing from the roof of the house.

He hurried up to the door and hammered on it, waking the couple and their two young children who were sleeping inside.

The family got out before the blaze spread to the main part of the structure.

District of North Vancouver firefighters arrived on scene a short time later to find flames pouring from the roof. They quickly got the fire under control, managing to keep it contained to the attic before finally extinguishing it.

The home’s roof and attic will need replacing and the living room suffered some damage when a portion of the ceiling collapsed, but otherwise the house was left unscathed, according to firefighters. No one was hurt in the incident.

“If the neighbour hadn’t seen it, the fire would have got deeper into the roof structure and eventually burned down into the house,” said assistant fire chief Mike Cairns.

“He gave a real advance warning to get the residents out. It would have had to burn quite a bit further to set off the smoke alarms.”

The blaze appears to have started in or near the chimney, but investigators have not yet determined the cause.

The homeowners were insured.

The two plazas — one at 17th Street and Marine Drive and another at Bellevue Avenue and 17th Street — will be connected by a tree-lined sidewalk, with a centre courtyard for residents.

A taller building, however, will mean more space for those pedestrian plazas, especially the plaza at 17th Street and Marine, and a larger and brighter entrance into the courtyard.

Geri Boyle, director of community planning for the district, said the two designs will allow the community to decide what values are most important and fit in with the overall revitalization of Ambleside.

“We think it’s an ideal time to engage the community in this type of application . . . showing one density, two forms, and to see how the public views this type of development,” she told council.

The development would include a community benefit; however, the value of the uplift in zoning hasn’t been determined yet, said Boyle. While overall the project fits the goals of the OCP, she said staff are still examining the impact on views, traffic and city services, but wanted to bring it forward to a public meeting sooner rather than later — tentatively planned for March 10 at the seniors’ centre.

Jim Hancock, director of IBI-HB Architects and one of the proponents of the project speaking at council Monday, said the project also plans to build an extra 86 to 120 public parking spaces, which would be included in the community amenity package.

He said the company is preparing software to do view analysis of individual homes, meaning by the time of the public meeting they could show residents in the area exactly how they would be affected by the building.

“At that time, we will be willing and able to go to anyone’s house and anyone’s condo to take a specific view

and show what the impacts of this might be to them,” he said, adding the site was chosen to have the smallest impact on views and shadows. “The tower location has been studied to death, might I say, and we thought, in the end, that the best location is on the southeast corner, the corner of Bellevue and 16th.”

That corner will also have one of the new entrances to the underground supermarket, which will announce its presence with a large glass box. By putting the supermarket underground, windows can wrap the building, whereas right now there is a blank wall, explained Chris Phillips, a landscape architect for

the project. “The store is flush with Bellevue street elevation, but there’s a 10 foot drop between Marine Drive and Bellevue,” he said. “Windows don’t function very well in grocery stores — they want to have racks of food and when you’re looking at the back of a rack it’s not very impressive.”

There was a small fracas over the direct notification of residents. Staff had recommended directly notifying a larger area than normal, including up to the edge of the taller buildings at Esquimalt Avenue, but it wasn’t large enough for council, which voted to widen it to include the full Ambleside community.

Couns. Michael Smith and Michael Evison opposed the change due to the expense of direct mail-outs.

Evison also raised concerns about traffic analysis to staff, and whether Bellevue and 17th Avenue will be able to handle increased traffic as cars use those streets to enter the new underground parking.

“Traffic management seems to be weak, particularly the intersection between 17th and Bellevue and 16th and Bellevue,” he said.

Maggie Pappas, second vicepresident of the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, implored council to continue with the project, arguing the parking spots, new retail, offices, residents and streetscape improvements will all help to revitalize the area.

Burnaby woman’s death not related, say police From page 1

A resident found the corpse just after midday Feb. 2 while walking a dog in the 2300-block of Kirkstone Road. It had been covered in plastic, according to some media reports, in an empty lot opposite Kirkstone Park.

On examining the find, North Vancouver RCMP concluded foul play had likely been involved and called in IHIT. Investigators spent much of that afternoon and the day after going over the area for clues and canvassing neighbours.

IHIT has not revealed why the victim’s gender was initially unclear. Carr did say, however, that contrary to some early media reports, the body had not been dismembered and had not decomposed to any great extent.

It’s not clear how long the woman had been dead, nor whether she had been killed at the Kirkstone location, but Carr said Tuesday it did not appear the body had been in the lot “for a great period of time.”

The body of another woman — also apparently a victim of homicide, according to investigators — was found in a park in Burnaby Feb. 7. At this point, there

is nothing to indicate that the North Vancouver case was linked to that discovery or to any other killing in the region, said Carr.

IHIT never reveals whether it has identified suspects, he added.

The last time a body was found in North Vancouver whose gender was not initially clear was on Boxing Day 2009, when the remains of a man were discovered in Waterfront Park. In that instance, investigators concluded the man had not been a victim of foul play, but did not release the cause of death or the reason for the difficulty in determining gender.

A North Vancouver man with gang ties is in hospital after being shot in Vancouver.

Themanwasapparentlyinhis car near the West 37th Avenue and Oak Street intersection just before 4 a.m. Saturday when someone opened fire on his vehicle, causing him to veer into a parked car before bouncing up on to the curb and coming to a stop, according to police.

Vancouver police arrived to find the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, none of them life threatening, according to investigators.

He was taken to hospital for treatment. He is expected to recover.

Officers searched the area with dog teams but failed to turn up a shooter. Oak Street remained cordoned off for several hours while they collected evidence and interviewed residents of the neighbourhood. No arrests have been made, according to a spokeswoman.

The incident comes two months after 10 people, including gang members and associates, were caught in a hail of bullets outside an Oak Street restaurant a few blocks north.

No one died in that earlier shooting, but two people were critically injured.

Investigators have not said whether Saturday’s shooting was linked to the earlier incident.

NV man dies in ski accident Rescue team retrieves body after man falls 200m in backcountry James Weldon

A North Vancouver backcountry skier died Saturday after falling several hundred metres from a peak in Mount Seymour provincial park.

The 36-year-old was skiing with a companion on First Pump Peak some time before noon when he apparently lost control and tumbled 200 to 300 metres down a steep slope. He appears to have died of injuries suffered in the fall, according to police.

The man’s partner skied out of the area to call for help.

North Shore Rescue rushed to the site by helicopter; but by the time they reached the victim, the man had been in full cardiac arrest for some time. Based on the severity of his condition, the rescuers made the decision not to attempt to resuscitate.

Inclement weather made it impossible to transport the victim

by helicopter, so members took the man’s body out by foot.

“It’s a tragedy for anyone who uses the North Shore as a place of recreation,” said Cpl. Peter DeVries, a spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP. “It seems this was just a case of an unfortunate set of circumstance. Our hearts go out to the family.”

Police have not said what caused the fall, as the incident is under investigation, but a spokesman for North Shore Rescue noted conditions were extremely icy in the area that day. Slopes nearby were so slippery that members had to put on crampons before stepping out of the helicopter.

The volunteer group issued a warning about slippery conditions last week after a snowshoer lost her footing near the top of Hollyburn Mountain and was caught a few metres down the slope by a tree, narrowly avoiding a potentially fatal fall.

The organization advised visitors — snowshoers especially — to use crampons and ice axes when venturing into snowy areas.

At the request of the family, the police have not released the victim’s name.

Duo chase down alleged thief in N. Van DINNER out on the town with a friend turned sour for one North Vancouver man when he returned to his car to find a smashed window and a man sitting in the front seat.

The pair allegedly found North Vancouver resident Willard Lewis, 18, in the vehicle, which was parked near Chesterfield Avenue and West Third Street, and gave chase. Lewis was caught nearby and witnesses called police.

“It’s usually a small number of people who commit a large number of these crimes,” said Cpl. Peter DeVries of the North Vancouver RCMP. “Although we always caution people not to place themselves at risk by trying to stop a criminal, the capture of this alleged thief is great because it likely prevented a series of additional thefts.”

Lewis is charged with one count each of theft, possession of stolen property, mischief and possession of break-in tools.

Sinking feeling T

HE news that B.C. Ferries CEO David Hahn is touting major fare hikes barely two months after eliminating its fuel “rebates” and increasing prices has angered travellers and sparked another round of comments about the depth of the feather bed on which Hahn reclines to do his job.

But while it is always tempting to mock public figureheads who earn extremely high salaries, it is important to remember that the empire Hahn is responsible for has always received direct government subsidy.

Hahn’s gloomy predictions last week of fare increases for the four years from 2012 to 2016 in the range of 20 per cent on major routes, 50 per cent on minor ones and more than 100 per cent on northern routes will only come true if our provincial government chooses

not to increase its subsidy.

That subsidy of $92 million has not been increased since 2003, although additional subsidies for the northern routes were added in 2008. The federal government also contributes to funding those particular routes: last year, that was $27 million.

Shaking down Hahn and other top ferry executives might feel good to taxpayers, but clearly the dollar amounts needed to fund the present levels of service are much more than are going to be found in any cost-cutting review. Without subsidy increases, the alternatives are only fare increases or less service.

Hahn was right to run these distress flags up his ship’s flagpole. It’s up to our future political leaders to revisit this debate, not shoot the messenger.

Working to bridge the gap

Dear Editor: Further to your Jan. 19 editorial, Highway to Hell: On Jan. 17 I attended the District of North Vancouver workshop on the Highway 1 reconfiguration project around the Fern Street overpass.

Since being elected in May 2009, this has been my primary infrastructure priority. I have had countless meetings with all potential partners involved in this project, including the councillors and mayor, our MP and First Nations representatives, as well as numerous meetings with Minister of Transportation Shirley Bond and ministry officials. I even took the minister, her deputy minister and senior staff on a driving tour of the area last spring.

One thing I know for sure — for anything to happen, all these partners have to work together to bring forward a solution. And they certainly have to agree on what the problem is. Namely, that people cannot travel in or out of the east-of-

Seymour area without getting caught in the daily bridge or “Cut” back-ups.

This doesn’t just affect North Vancouverites. This interchange cuts off traffic to and from Burnaby, Vancouver, the Sea-to-Sky corridor and B.C. Ferries.

The simple fact is the problem includes the TransCanada Highway, and any solution must include the federal government in addition to everyone else. So let’s stop blaming each other and sit down and find a solution that actually fixes the problem.

If the municipalities, province, federal and First Nations governments can all work together, we can share the cost and make it happen. To that end, I’d be happy to convene a meeting with all partners.

Let’s work together on this one.

Handsworth student hampers a boon Dear Editor: I am writing on behalf of all the moms at Open Door, a support group for single moms. For the past several years, the P.E. 12 and the Fitness 11/12 classes at Handsworth secondary, under the supervision of Randy Storey and Michelle Pye, have organized the students at the school to produce and distribute hampers to each of our moms at Christmas. Each year the number of moms has grown, and yet the students have still managed to get together an amazing hamper for each family.

This past Christmas that number was 26. These hampers include food, gifts and gift cards.

The moms feel so special as they know that without this help, the room under the tree and in the cupboards would be quite bare. They are overwhelmed with the care these wonderful students have shown them and so want to say a huge “thanks” for all the work that these hampers show.

There’s no practical plan for licensing cyclists

Dear Editor: The debate over the word “possible” or “practicable” between one of your readers and RCMP Cpl. Peter DeVries is semantically interesting, but ignores a key point: the Supreme Court of British Columbia has ruled in favour of a cyclist’s right to “take the lane.” The ruling recognizes a cyclist’s own personal feeling of safety is a component of the decision about what is “practicable.”

One of your readers suggested licensing for cyclists and while I’m not opposed to this in principle I’ve yet to hear anybody introduce a comprehensive, coherent and practically executable plan for such a licence. In Oregon, a licensing fee was proposed that was equal to the fee for a motor vehicle, ridiculous when you consider the relative cost of the vehicle. Would the reader license children as well, or should they be allowed to ride unlicensed?

If they ride unlicensed, would they not then lose on the benefits of licensing, as presumably some form of rider education would be required to receive such a licence. If not, then what would be the criteria to receive a licence? There is much to carefully consider in such a scheme. It’s harder than just saying “License the bastards, each and every one! That’ll teach ‘em!”

Proponents of licensing often suggest that these fees could be used to make “cyclists pay their own way.” Such statements conveniently ignore the fact that vehicle licensing fees in no way come close to paying the costs of operating vehicles. I do not own a car, and yet a great deal of the tax money I pay goes towards a vehicle infrastructure that is dominated by singleoccupancy motor vehicles while public transit remains chronically underfunded. It hardly seems fair, does it?

Less talk, more action on children at risk

These programs will directly contribute to saving lives and to improving the health of mothers and children in these countries.”

PRIME Minister Stephen Harper’s announcement pointed to $178 million in new funding, almost all of it spread over five years.

As co-chairman of the Commission on Information and Accountability for Women’s and Children’s Health, Harper was also updating Canadians on the group’s progress since the Muskoka G8 Summit of June 2010 and Canada’s commitment to spend $2.85 billion on improving perinatal care in developing countries.

Before discussing Harper’s announcement in relation to other recent developments, I should emphasize that, no matter where they occur, initiatives to improve maternal and child health, family nutrition and disease prevention warrant our support. No one wants to see children, anywhere, living in poverty or dying from hunger, neglect or abuse.

So Harper’s assurance that accountability will be paramount as the 2.85 billion tax dollars are spent is welcome news.

But if Harper truly believes in the Muskoka goals, why has his government not taken similar action to mitigate those same problems here — problems that have been

Imagine what $2.85 billion could achieve if it were dedicated to the recommendations outlined in the report, Fragile Lives, Fragmented Systems, by Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth.

Released on Jan. 27, the review details the remarkably similar circumstances that ended in the deaths of 21 infants “who died before the age of two years old between 2007 and 2009.”

What were the similar circumstances and challenges cited?

Fifteen of the infants were aboriginal, nine were from Vancouver Island.

They and their families lived in inadequate housing, and in chronic poverty.

Intergenerational trauma, abuse, neglect and domestic violence was a thread that wove its destructive way throughout these families.

Substance abuse was common, and many families had “documented mental health issues such as depression, suicidal behaviour and anxiety.”

Worst of all, given the fatal results, was that the social and

medical safety nets we expect to be available to at-risk families in British Columbia lacked co-ordination and were “fragmented systems that failed to provide the supports (the families) needed, and failed to identify and respond to the risks that were in many instances obvious.”

The conclusions of this latest review, released in the second decade of the 21st century, drive me to distraction, especially when they follow on the heels of Harper’s announcement just one day earlier.

One sentence in particular made me want to pick up a copy of the report, carry it over to Victoria, bang it down on the premier’s desk and say, “All of these things were being said 30 to 40 years ago; I know because I typed them over and over. When does the provincial government — any government — plan to quit spending money on more studies and spend it instead on actually doing something to solve the problems?”

“Any government” because the 10-year reign of the B.C. NDP has nothing to crow about on this file either — despite last Saturday’s political finger-pointing on CKNW by interim leader Dawn Black.

The sentence in question

appears in the introductory summary of the review.

It speaks of the need for targeted public health nurse visiting programs and goes on to say, “This is clearly an area where great benefit could come from a more consistent, standardized approach to the services provided.”

Standardized approaches were recommended by the multi-disciplinary Perinatal Program of B.C. as far back as the 1970s.

Community health workers — mostly public health nurses — aided by completion of a standard set of program-designed obstetric and newborn records, would guide families through optimum care protocols to a safe and successful conclusion.

That program, later called the Continuing Advisory SubCommittee on Perinatal Care, was no casual effort.

First chaired by its founder, pediatrician Dr. Archie Hardyment, and later

by North Vancouver family physician Dr. Curt Latham, its executive boasted a full spectrum of health-care professionals that included public health nurses.

sleeping arrangements, is that one of the pediatricians who provided regular input was North Vancouver pediatrician, Dr. Sydney Segal.

An internationally recognized expert on the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Segal would turn over in his grave were he to read the echo of his words in the reports of today.

Given that history, it is a wonder to me that British Columbia still deserves to

have people like TurpelLafond willing to take up the torch in an effort to carry it through to the finish line.

The justice system must seem to make a mockery of all your efforts at times, knowing that hardened criminals will get off with a “slap on the wrist.”

Dear Ms. Carroll: I want to offer you a personal note of thanks on behalf of the police officers here at the North Vancouver detachment.

Since we don’t often receive such thoughtful gestures of support, I forwarded your letter to the members here in our office.

As the media officer, I have the pleasure of talking about the hard work everyone else does, and although for many years I too worked the hard, overnight shifts and dealt every day with the discouraging

incidents to which the police are so often called, I no longer do. As such, those who most deserve your appreciation are the patrol officers, the general investigators and the support staff, all of whom work in shifts during the times when most of us are at home asleep.

It’s true that the men and women of the RCMP work very hard to provide the best service they can, despite the negativity and thanklessness with which they are often met.

And yes, our officers have missed many Christmases with family, welcomed in many new years with a quick cellphone call home from the seat of their police cars and been late for

dinner more times than they like to admit.

We do this for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it sets us apart; there is great pride in knowing we willingly do the things that others cannot and will not. We also do it because we know that we can make our communities safer with a little personal sacrifice. It’s a price we’re willing to pay for the comfort of knowing everyone’s children can more safely walk home from school and that loved ones, including ours, can sleep more peacefully while dedicated officers pull a graveyard shift.

The Mount Seymour forward operating base came online in January, just weeks after the volunteer organization opened its fourth station in Cypress Bowl.

The two new facilities, which include shelters for equipment and helicopter landing pads, continue the organization’s push to decentralize.

The move will help accelerate NSR’s response to emergencies, said Tim Jones, a spokesman for the group.

“For a volunteer SAR team, in my opinion, it’s state of the art,” he said. “Every mountain resort (on the North Shore) now has a SAR station at it or nearby.”

Until 4½ years ago, North Shore Rescue’s resources were confined to a single facility in the City of North Vancouver works yard.

When calls came in for an emergency in the mountains, members would have to make their way from work or home to that central point, gear up and then fly or drive out from there.

That arrangement tended to slow things down, with volunteers frequently held up by traffic or snow while trying to travel east-west across a community whose rivers and other natural barriers tend to run north-south.

By pushing the stations up into the mountains, the organization has made it possible for team members to take relatively unobstructed routes north to reach their mustering points.

That will save lives, said Jones.

“We’re usually operating in a time-compressed fashion with closing light windows and (approaching) weather systems,” he said.

“We need to have prepositioned equipment and facilities so we can establish command and get hasty teams in the field.”

Jones emphasized the original facility nonetheless remains important.

“It’s our main resource base,” he said. “The most critical rescue ever done in the team’s history — at Theta Lake — was done from the city works yard.”

North Shore Rescue’s Bone Creek station in the Seymour watershed opened in May 2006.

That was followed by facilities in the Capilano watershed in May 2008, at the top of Indian Arm in September 2009, at Cypress Bowl last fall and on Mount Seymour last month.

The Cypress and Mount Seymour stations were made possible by contributions from Cypress Mountain and Mount Seymour Resorts, the North Shore Credit Union, the Charros Foundation and a number of other donors.

WEST Vancouver residents who keep their phones in their pockets are endangering lives.

The WVPD is hoping it can begin to bring the number of false alarms down through education. It’s asking cellphone users to slip their gadgets into a case before putting them in a pocket or purse.

Simply locking the keypad isn’t always enough, said Johal, since some phones can trigger an emergency call even when the keypad isn’t fully active.

That’s the message from the West Vancouver police this week after the force received some 182 abandoned 9-1-1 calls over a two-week period — the vast majority, apparently, from cellphones that had been activated by accident in the user’s pocket.

The figure came from E-Comm, the company that provides dispatch services to the WVPD and other Lower Mainland forces. The number may not be out of the ordinary, but West Vancouver has only just begun tracking it recently, said Cpl. Jag Johal, a spokesman for the force.

E-Comm operators attempt to locate the source of every call that comes in. When someone dials 9-1-1 and then hangs up on a mobile phone, the service attempts to triangulate its point of origin using cell towers. It then dispatches officers from the appropriate jurisdiction to the area.

If a call came from Ambleside Park, WVPD members will rush there and search the area until they found the caller or were satisfied no mishap has taken place, said Johal.

That eats up a significant amount of police time, he said.

“If you’re taking time away from an actual emergency, it’s going to take us that long to respond,” said Johal.

the Mustard report; the Hughes inquiry and a succession of reports by the children’s representative, wherever the Muskoka initiatives may go, accountability is an absolute must.

And that brings me to Bill C-575, the First Nations Financial Transparency Act, a private member’s bill tabled last fall by Conservative MP Kelly Block.

As noted by Kerry Blackadar in the North Shore News on Jan. 30, the bill calls for greater transparency regarding “federal funds flowing to First Nations officials (to) bring politicians on reserves in line with other (non-Native) elected officials.”

This information is critical given the number of aboriginal families who are living in abject poverty.

Yet Blackadar reports that Chief Ian Campbell of the Squamish Nation opposes C-575 on the grounds that it smacks of “blatant paternalism.”

The chief has my sympathy; I feel the same way about completing my annual tax returns.

Unfortunately, that annual accounting is required if I want to benefit from Medicare and all of the other services, pensions and grants available to me out of a pool of taxpayer dollars. My only other option is to walk away from the pool.

Also troubling was Blackadar’s news that Ottawa is not alone in asking for accountability. It seems Squamish member Jo-Ann Nahanee has added her voice to others who seek to know how federal dollars are spent in their communities.

Perhaps they, like me, find it difficult to understand why, despite the billions of tax dollars allocated over the past halfcentury, so many First Nations families are living in Third World conditions today.

And that comment is intended to be neither paternalistic nor judgmental.

Rather, it is a respectful acknowledgement of the despair conveyed by Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, herself a First Nations Canadian, when she recorded that “deep poverty was the single largest risk factor in (the infants’) environment.”

How much better it would be if, with Harper’s $2.85 billions and the will of the province, we could work in harmony to find lasting solutions to that problem. rimco@shaw.ca

The first is Sugar & Co., 1348 Marine Drive, West Vancouver. This is a fantastic candy store that you will find a large variety of old-fashioned candy and some new varieties that will guarantee a smile on any child’s face. Look for Swizzel’s Love Hearts and Liquorice Allsorts, and who doesn’t remember the good old-fashioned Whirly Pops.

Another fantastic candy store is Frankies Candy Bar, which closed its Dundarave location and has opened an online boutique and Kerrisdale storefront. Frankies features Jones Soda Carbonated Candy and King Of All Love Beads.

Advantages of winter pruning are many

Todd Major PEOPLE always seem to have some uncertainty about pruning.

This is probably due to information overload and because everyone applies their own pruning nuance to the work. Pruning is a highly skilled form of art that requires an understanding of the science of pruning and plant growth response. But most people manage to do reasonably well with a little information and some trial and error, not including hack and whackers that only know how to shear mercilessly any plant in their path into a square or ball.

In a recent column, I wrote about the advantages of pruning during winter

— to obtain the plant growth response of invigoration, which occurs when pruning most plants during dormancy.

A few of our readers emailed me to point out that giving advice to the uninformed homeowners was irresponsible and that based on my advice people may go out and start pruning without understanding what they were doing, which could lead to problems and loss of flowering wood.

To assume that gardening homeowners are so incapable of intellectual growth is archaically patriarchal and irresponsible and it prevents

learning. However, I am sometimes the first person to admit that I have omitted information. So in an effort to help everyone clarify their pruning knowledge, I offer the following advice about winter pruning.

Many deciduous and broadleaved evergreen trees and shrubs can be safely pruned during winter, without removing too much of the flowering wood.

This does depend on your hardiness zone. Pruning in cold zones like in Alberta or Ontario is more of a risk for some plants and has to be done with increased skill,

timing and focus. Pruning during winter on our warm West Coast is much less problematic.

Winter pruning is very beneficial if you want to take advantage of invigorated regrowth. This is particularly true of cane-producing shrubs like forsythia, nandina, viburnum, red-stem dogwoods, hydrangeas and other plants that produce new growth from the ground.

Pruning of these shrubs involves removal of the offending stem right to the base of the plant, not as some

I am a big fan of the idea of eBooks, and to be fair they are a polarizing concept. Some people have an emotional tie to paper books, almost a religious attachment. They feel some special relationship with the paper and feel of a real book.

I thought I had a similar bent; turns out I am far more shallow than that. I am happy to read away on an eBook, and in fact, after having one for just a little over a month, I prefer it. Time for an excommunication from the book snobbery club!

The Kobo will set you back about $150 and comes loaded with some 100 classic books to start your library. All those books and thousand more can be stored in the main memory of the Kobo, which also boasts an SD memory card slot, so you could literally store thousands of titles on your Kobo.

The display (crucial for an eReader) is a six inch passive E Ink display. The term passive means no backlight. This is important from several aspects.

First, no backlight means a far lighter and more energy efficient unit is possible. The Kobo is only 221 grams (a tad under eight ounces to you old-time non-metric thinkers). It makes the Kobo light

enough to comfortably hold in one hand while you read. By contrast, the Apple iPad, at just over a pound, is too heavy to do this. Battery life on the unit is measured in weeks — two to be precise — as opposed to hours for a traditional display, so you could pack a Kobo on a week-long holiday, read to your hearts content at the beach and still have plenty of juice! Ah. . . the beach! Another benefit of the passive E Ink display is you can read in outside conditions — glare is not an issue. In fact, you need an external light source for the Kobo to read, just like a real book.

The E Ink display is also easier on the eyes than a backlit display, something I appreciate after spending hours on a computer each day.

You can adjust the font size to suit your preference.

When I say the Kobo is bare bones, I am really referring to the operating and navigation systems. You use a multi-directional pad on the bottom of the Kobo to navigate through menus, select titles and turn pages. The system works well enough, but the Kobo itself is a tad sluggish in response — something that only really bothers me when I am in maintenance mode, not when I am reading. But in this age, with

more support and guidance as teens than they do in their middle years. But it’s different.

Letting go, allowing our teens increasing independence is not easy, but is essential if our teens are going to grow up to become capable young men and women.

Helping them determine who they are, what they are good at, what they should be considering for their future is another challenge for parents.

No longer is it helpful to tell Olivia that she can be what she wants to be. She is now ready to consider who she is and what that can really mean for her future. Some questions she may be considering are: ■ What am I good at?

■ How do others perceive me?

■ What will I do in the future?

■ What are my personal characteristics?

■ What kind of person am I? Your job is to help her with this process, to support her as she works through her options and to offer input about her abilities.

For example, if you have noticed that she has an amazing sense of colour and design, tell her. Often kids have special abilities that they don’t recognize. She may think that everyone can walk into a room and see how furniture placement, wall colour and art pieces would create a beautiful space. Let her know that being able to do this is special.

The next part is to talk to her about whether this is something she would like to consider as a career. Put the idea in her mind and then let her mull it over.

We have all heard about the power of networking as a way to meet the right people to move forward in our careers.

Our teens don’t have a strong network, but we can help with that.

Halloween night two years ago a friendship turned into love and I was swept off my feet by a crazy Frenchman.

Since that rainy North Vancouver night we have realized that we want to grow old together, travel to far away destinations and ride into many future sunsets — laughing every step of the way.

Describe your first date: After the Halloween party, Rene invited me over to watch a hockey game at his place a few nights later — nothing too exciting. But, our best date was when Rene borrowed his friend’s motorcycle and he took me on my very first motorcycle ride up to Squamish and through the dirt roads along the Squamish Valley River. Five hours later we made it back home. What an awesome day!

How do you like to spend time together: Cooking and sharing a bottle of wine, walking the dogs, sitting by the campfire listening to music and just being outside.

We were at his friend’s shop and he hid the ring in a motorcycle helmet and waited for me to go to the washroom (which I never did and really, how romantic!) so he finally dragged me into the shop and pulled the box out of the helmet and asked again.

Ross has muscular dystrophy, an incurable disease which means that his body is missing part of the genetic information to create muscle. Because of his condition, Ross spends much of his time in a wheelchair. This will only increase as his muscles deteriorate. Transporting a growing child and a wheelchair is very challenging and some days almost impossible.

Celebrate Apple Month this February

WE all know what February is.

It’s the month we focus on things that are sweet, fresh and good for our hearts.

That’s right, it’s Apple Month!

Apparently February has long been deemed the month we celebrate the widely cultivated tree fruit, but I’m going to let it go if you didn’t realize it. (Neither did I.) “I’m not sure how February came to be Apple Month,” said Adrian Abbott, director of marketing at B.C. Tree Fruits.

He agreed that most people would guess Apple Month to take place in the fall, during the harvest. In February, we’re so distracted by the chocolate and roses filling stores for Valentine’s Day that we can hardly be blamed for not picking up on a promotion that’s good for us.

Nevertheless, it’s in January and February that B.C. consumers buy the most apples, presumably because, thanks to effective cold storage, they are one of the few local fruits still widely available fresh at this time of year.

So a celebration is appropriate. This year, B.C. Tree Fruits is pulling out all the stops to ensure we know it’s time to enjoy our province’s sweet apple bounty, and to give us plenty of opportunities to bite

Last week, the marketing group hosted an apple-themed cooking class and dinner at The Dirty Apron Cooking School in Vancouver.

Nutritionist and apple grower Darcel Markgraf explained why apples are such a smart choice — especially at this time of year.

“Canada’s Food Guide recommends seven to 10 servings of vegetables and fruit per day.

I call apples ‘the gateway fruit.’

They’re a good lead-in to other fruits and vegetables.” With more fibre than a bowl of oatmeal and superb anti-oxidant

properties, grabbing an apple or incorporating them into an easy recipe adds quick nutrition to your winter menu.

We gave it a go by sipping apple cocktails as we baked Olive Oil and Apple Thyme Cakes, followed by dinner spiked with . . . you guessed it, apples (created by Dirty Apron chef David Robertson), then our own desserts.

What a revelation — you can use apples in almost anything. They add juiciness and the lift of well-balanced acidity, but don’t overpower any dish they’re added to.

Robertson used Spartan apples in the potato-apple blini, upon which he fanned crispy seared duck breast. Next to

it, he laid a pressed and pretty apple terrine.

It was thin-sliced Fuji apples layered with potato and onion in the elegant pavé on the plate with maple roasted Berkeshire pork and green beans.

And we used small-diced Ambrosia apples in our cake.

Neat fact: did you know Ambrosias are slower to oxidize than other varieties, so are therefore a good choice for snacking, or tossing in a salad?

However you slice it, or them, this is a great month to add the often-overlooked apple to the menu; and your Valentine is sure to love them, too.

Home-cooked meal is perfect for Valentine’s

YOU know what they say about “the way to a man’s heart …” (a woman’s heart as well, if the truth be told).

With these recipes, you can have a really beautiful dinner for Valentine’s Day without the expense of going to a restaurant. Splurge on a great bottle of wine or champagne to accompany your special meal, put on some romantic

music, light the candles and enjoy.

The nice thing about the following recipes is that the potatoes and dessert can be made ahead and baked just before serving, and the steak takes only a short amount of time to prepare. The final touch would be some roasted asparagus — toss trimmed asparagus spears with some olive oil, salt and pepper and place on a baking sheet in the oven for 20 minutes while the potato casserole is baking.

Beef Tenderloin with Wild Mushroom Sauce It’s a criminal offence to cook tenderloin any more than medium rare! Don’t use a non-stick skillet to sear the steaks — they won’t brown properly.

4 beef tenderloin steaks, about 1½” thick 2 tbsp vegetable oil 4 tbsp butter, cut into 4 pieces 10 oz mixed wild mushrooms (you can find “chef’s blend”

mushrooms in grocery stores, which are a mixture of several different types, but regular sliced button mushrooms will do fine as a substitute) 1 shallot, minced ½ cup red wine ¼ cup low-sodium beef broth Salt and freshly ground

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Pat steaks dry with paper towels and season generously with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a large steel skillet (not nonstick) over medium-high heat until just smoking. Add steaks

to the pan and do not move them for three minutes. Flip the steaks over and cook the other side for three minutes.

Place the pan in the oven and let the steaks finish cooking for six to eight minutes for medium rare. Remove pan

100 g sugar 1 egg ¾ cup all-purpose flour ¼ tsp baking powder 2 tsp fresh thyme pinch of salt Preheat oven to 325 F. Butter a small loaf pan and coat with sugar (a five inch x 2½ inch loaf pan works well). In a small bowl, whisk together the butter, egg and sugar until light and fluffy.

Slowly drizzle in the olive oil and continue to whisk. Using a spatula fold the thyme and apples into the batter (feel free to save some of each for garnish). Sift together the remaining flour, baking powder and salt. Gradually stir into the creamed mixture. Spread evenly into the prepared pan and top with desired garnish.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool.

For best results, use a high quality dark chocolate with about 30 percent cocoa butter content. These only take 13 minutes to bake so they can go into the oven just before you want to serve them. The recipe makes eight servings — I’m betting everybody will want seconds!

12 tsp plus 5 tbsp granulated sugar 8 oz bittersweet (not unsweetened) chocolate, chopped ¾ cup unsalted butter 3 large eggs 3 large egg yolks 1 tbsp all purpose flour 2 pints premium quality coffee ice cream (go for the good stuff — it’s worth it!)

Generously butter eight ¾ cup ramekins. Sprinkle the inside of each one with 1½ tsp sugar. Stir chocolate and butter in heavy medium

saucepan over low heat until smooth; remove from heat.

Using an electric mixer beat eggs, egg yolks and remaining five tbsp sugar in a large bowl until thick and pale yellow, about eight minutes. Fold 1⁄3 of the warm chocolate mixture into eggs, then fold in the remaining chocolate. Fold in flour. Divide the batter among the ramekins. (Can be made ahead to this point; cover with plastic and chill.) Bring dishes to room temperature before baking.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Place ramekins on a baking sheet; bake until edges are puffed and slightly cracked but centre one inch of each cake jiggles slightly when dishes are gently shaken — about 13 minutes. DON’T OVERBAKE! Top each cake with a scoop of coffee ice cream and serve immediately. Makes eight servings.

APCARIAN - GHARAKHANIAN Clemance Mrs. Clemance ApcarianGharakhanian passed away February 3, 2011 at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver.

Clemance was born in Esfahan Iran on May 11th, 1930. She was married to her devoted husband Abram for 53 years, who has passed away in November 07.

With 2 sons, they moved to England in 1978. In 1982 they came to Canada, where they resided on the North Shore.

Clemance cooked and baked almost constantly. She loved to play her favourite songs on her organ, sew dresses on her sewing machine as well as keep up with her favourite soap operas on TV. Clemance always has friends or family visiting or speaking to her on the phone.

She loved to gather with her girl friends every week to play Rummi where jokes and laughter could be heard for hours on end.

In their younger years they loved to travel and see the world. Hong Kong, Cuba, Hawaii, Jerusalem and Lourdes are only to name a few. But the place most dear to her heart was her home land Armenia. She had a deep faith in God, and held onto this faith until her final days of life. Clemance leaves behind their eldest son Razmik (from Los Angeles), his wife Arpi and their 2 children Garoon and Raffi, as well as their second son Ruben, and his wife Louise and their 4 children Sebastian, Julian, Christopher and Olivia. She will be deeply missed, but we can all feel comfort in knowing that her suffering is over and she is once again wither beloved Abram.

Viewing will be held at the First Memorial Funeral Chapel in North Vancouver on Wednesday, February 9th between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Church services will be held at St. Vartans Church, 1260 West 67th Ave., Vancouver on Thursday, February 10th at 11:00 am followed by the Funeral Services at 1:30 pm at the City of North Vancouver Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Armenian Children’s Fund, c/o Saint Vartans Church, or to your choice of Charity.

GODENZIE - Frank William In loving memory of Frank who passed away peacefully on January 28, 2011 with his family at his side. Survived by his loving wife Margaret, daughter Lisa (Darrell), grandchildren Adrienne and Nathan, and son Ian. Predeceased by daughter Laura (Rob) and son Andrew. HARMON - Gordon On Sunday, January 30th, Gordon Harmon passed away at his North Vancouver home surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his mother Lillian (Babe) and father Harold. Gordon moved to North Vancouver in 1968 from Bentley, Alberta and enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with Prudential Sussex Realty. He loved his family, his many friends, his job and his favourite place was the outdoor patio at Seymour. He was a mentor to many in the real estate business, a friend to all and never had a bad day. A Celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, February 9th from 3pm to 6pm at the Seymour Golf and Country Club, 3723 Mount Seymour Parkway, North Vancouver, B.C. V7G 1C1. HUNT - Margaret [Peggy] Born March 10, 1916 in London, England and immigrated to Canada with parents Frank and Jenny in 1924. Peggy passed away peacefully at Lynn Valley Care Centre [Manor] on February 3, 2011. Pre-deceased by husband [Joseph] in 1972 and son Francis [Frank] in 2007. She will be sadly missed by son Bob, [Lydia] and grand-daughter Kyla, and son Jim and family in Mission.

Peggy spent her entire life in Lynn Valley where she was active over the years in activities from Church events, Garden Clubs, to volunteering at LGH. Some of her happiest memories were the years she operated ’Hunt’s Antiques’ at Lynn Valley Road and Mountain Highway. Special thanks to the nursing staff and care-aids at Lynn Valley Care Centre who contributed to mom’s comfort in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated. There will be no service by request.

PORTER - Carolyn It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved daughter and sister, Carolyn M. Porter on Feb. 2nd, 2011 at age 49 years. Carolyn was an intelligent, determined woman with a fearless heart and resolute spirit in the face of a decades-long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Both a student and teacher, she worked to further the status of the disabled and the rights of women. In later years she was a faithful member of the church. SHARMAN -Robert (Bob) Newing January 25, 1925 January 30, 2011 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing, after a lengthy illness, of our husband, father and grandfather Bob Sharman at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Bob leaves behind Dorothy, his loving wife of 61 years; children, Doran (Annmarie), Grant and Dayle (Norm); grandchildren, Noel (Julie), Kelsey, Caitlin and Blaine; great-grandchildren, Liberty and Lincoln. Bob will also be missed by his sisters, Dorothy of West Vancouver and Joan (Doug) of Nanaimo. His beloved granddaughter Rachel predeceases him. Bob was born in Vancouver and lived the first two years at Lake Buntzen, BC before the family moved to West Vancouver. He was a WWII veteran serving in the Canadian Navy before returning to West Vancouver and starting his career with BC Electric. After 38 years Bob retired from BC Hydro in Nanaimo. He spent many years volunteering with the Royal Canadian Legion, always helping with the annual Poppy Drive. He also enjoyed his monthly luncheons with the Navy League and BC Hydro Power Pioneers.

Bob and Dorothy\’s greatest passions were the travels they took to far off places. Bob enjoyed telling about his adventures whether one of their many camping trips, their visits to Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and the Far East or one of their many cruises. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 18, 2011 at 2 PM at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 257, Lantzville, BC.
