Elections Task Force delivers proposals Jane Seyd

CIVIC activists are praising recommendations of the local elections task force that would put limits on how much municipal candidates can spend, see candidates’ financial information posted online and make Elections BC responsible for overseeing complaints. But they warn when it comes to how effective new rules will be, the devil’s in the details. John Jensen, a council watcher in the City of North Vancouver, said overall the suggestions made the task force are good ones. “It struck a balance between people who were demanding quite significant changes and those who were hoping for none at all,” he said. Provincial law requires a citizens’ initiative to sign up 10 per cent of voters in each of the province’s ridings, a mark the Bill Vander Zalm-led group says it has reached. But Vander Zalm is pushing for at least 15 per cent in each riding as a safety margin should Elections BC reject some of the signatures.
