Police ID Kirkstone Park body
Surrey woman was reported missing; killed off the North Shore James Weldon jweldon@nsnews.com
THE body found near North Vancouver’s Kirkstone Park earlier this month belonged to Jennifer Ferguson, a woman who went missing from Surrey three weeks ago, according to investigators. Ferguson, 40, was reported missing to police Jan. 30. Her family had last seen her at her home in the 14600-block of 84th Avenue on Jan. 22. They told investigators it was out of character for her to be out of contact for such a long period of time. Ferguson was a slight woman, just five feet tall and 90-100 pounds. She also went by the name Jennifer Sondergaard. Investigators believe Ferguson was a victim of homicide. It appears she was killed somewhere outside the North Shore, they said, and then transported to the empty lot in the 2300-block of Kirkstone Road where she was found Feb. 2. A resident discovered her body, which had been wrapped in plastic, while walking a dog. No charges have been laid in the case, and investigators will not say See Police page 5
Sultan finds childhood ‘poverty’ exists in W. Van James Weldon

A West Vancouver Liberal MLA is calling for action on childcare and settlement programs for immigrants after an analysis he performed uncovered some unsettling trends among low-income families in one of Canada’s wealthiest communities. Ralph Sultan, MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano, made the recommendations in a discussion paper called Childhood Poverty in West Vancouver: Fact or Fiction, a 100-page analysis of census data due to be released to media and other groups in the next few days. Sultan concludes the phenomenon — which he says should more accurately be referred to as “low-income families with children” — is real, See Immigrants page 5
