WITH hordes of young people headed back to school next week, police and traffic safety groups will be using a variety of methods — old and new — to remind drivers to slow down in school zones. The District of West Vancouver will be installing a 3-D optical illusion on 22nd Street that looks like a young girl running into the street. Northbound drivers near Ecole Pauline Johnson will first see a sign that reads You’re Probably Not Expecting Kids to Run Out on the Road, followed by a 3-D image of a child chasing a ball into the street. The image of the girl is visible from about 30 metres away, giving motorists enough space to stop if they are obeying the speed limit. The girl appears to recede into the pavement as drivers pass by. The illusion, the first of its kind in Canada, will be in place for one week. HE two small communities on the isolated Australian islands of Cocos Keeling are longtime winners of the country’s “Tidy Towns” competition but, just steps away, three Vancouver sailors found a different story. On the eastern side of the atoll, strong trade winds bring waves crashing onto the shores, and with the waves come piles of plastic stretching out to the horizon. That’s all Ryan Robertson saw when he landed on the beach two years ago as part of a Vancouver-based exhibition to document plastic found in the oceans and beaches around the world. “We usually pick up (clean) 100 metres of beach — this time we could get nowhere close to it. We ended up just selecting a random 10-metre section and then decided we’re only going to collect sandals and only going to collect pop bottles,” he said by phone in Vancouver, where he returned to take care of his now three-month-old son, Dorian. In that 10-metre section of beach, he and his crewmates, younger brother Bryson Robertson and friend Hugh Patterson, found 350 sandals and 240 pop bottles. After an hour or two of cataloguing the jetsam, the waves had washed ashore enough trash to obscure their effort. That garbage came from Indonesia, just 2,000 kilometres to the east of Cocos Keeling, however plastic from all around the world, including North Vancouver, ends up in the world’s oceans. Three years ago the group set off from Mexico to sail the world and collect samples of the garbage they ﬁnd on beaches along the way. Within a week, they will be home in Vancouver after a successful expedition — sort of. Ryan said their journey has shown them the problem was far worse than they expected. For him, the full extent came crashing down in the waves at Cocos Keeling. “Where there’s so much plastic and the oceans are so full of garbage there, you just want to give up — that your whole mission is futile. You feel like the change you’re making in a few people is

But the last leg of the journey has taken the group into the largest ocean garbage dump in the world, where much of the plastic from North America winds up. The swirling ocean and wind currents push all the garbage in the North Pacific into one spot, called the North Pacific Gyre, where a high pressure zone causes it to get stuck. There, the plastic floats around in a garbage dump the size of Alberta far out of sight from most. Because the plastic can’t fully break down naturally, the sea is littered with tiny pieces of plastic the size of zooplankton, which are then ingested by the fish and birds. Bryson described it as “like a dense plastic soup.” Hundreds, if not thousands, of pieces less than two centimeters across float

In the gyre, there was far more plastic than marine life. But even outside the gyre in the supposedly vast, pristine ocean, the group would pick up as much plastic as marine life whenever they dropped the net. “If this is the amount of plastic we encounter on the inﬁnitely small path of ocean we have crossed, then to multiply it across the entire ocean becomes mind-boggling,” said Patterson. Ryan agreed. “The reality is that plastics like that exist in every ocean in the world, they just don’t have a place to collect,” he said, explaining why there’s nothing like the Great Paciﬁc Gyre anywhere else in See Documentary page 11

The northbound Upper Levels Highway from Taylor Way to the entrance to Highway 99 will lose one lane. Highway 99 will have one northbound lane reserved for cyclists, who will have the right of way at all intersections.

Every year in B.C., there’s an average of 16,655 crashes and 5,350 injuries involving children — with September and October the worst months for accidents involving child pedestrians. Ironically, parents rushing to drop their kids off at school and pick them up, are often among the worst offenders for school zone speeding — not exactly a great example to their children. Besides leaving early and obeying the posted speed limits, parents can help in other ways, perhaps by not driving at all. Many areas now have “walking school buses,” reducing the number of cars on the roads. They can also teach kids to unplug the iPod, put away the phone and make eye contact with drivers while walking. We all share responsibility for safety, especially at this time of year.

Who will steer Go Bus funding plan?

Dear Editor: The Go Bus provides an essential service to many seniors, some of whom are members of the Lynn Valley Seniors Association. These are the seniors whom you would never see without this service. They are the seniors who are trying to stay active despite the various challenges of growing old. We all know that there is a growing senior demographic in our North Shore communities. The aim is to stay healthy through activities with others. This can be tough even when you seem not to have any physical limitations. It is not easy to get from your house to the swimming pool for therapeutic exercise when you

can’t walk more than three blocks. It is not easy to get to the shops just around the corner when you need a taxi for you and your walker. It’s not always about the cost of these services to our seniors. It’s about the flexibility of the service. The regular transit service frightens many of our frail seniors who have a justified fear of falling. And HandyDart provides a level of service that is not necessary to these riders. It’s so nice to be able to say: Thank you to Pacific Arbour for stepping up and donating enough funds to keep the Go Bus operating for another two months. And they have challenged other businesses to help in a similar way. The funding is truly welcome, but this is hardly a permanent solution. There is always the

potential that we’ll be back to a place of uncertainty and worry for the seniors who need — and use — this service. The bus, we have. And now we have enough ﬁnancial resources to operate it for a little while longer. A user-pay system could be implemented, but that seems to be a resource denied to the Go Bus program. So, will the various governments, municipal and provincial, help to come up with a better plan? Could our members look forward to a transportation system that serves seniors who need more than regular transit, but less than HandyDart? Stephanie Varju, president, Lynn Valley Seniors Association

Canadian economic stimulus plan is number 1

Dear Editor: Liberal candidate Daniel Veniez does what opposition critics do — sometimes without logic or restraint — in criticizing federal economic stimulus spending received by our riding in his Aug. 27 letter Stimulus is Just MP Rhetoric. But in his mockery, he contradicts the priorities articulated by people who, unlike him, actually live here. The criticism falls ﬂat because people who live here see that the stimulus is working. The plan is the toast of the developed world and Prime Minister Stephen Harper continues to win

praise from other world leaders and other sources. Canada is number 1 in rebounding from the recession, with the strongest economy in the G8. Veniez finds fault with federal spending. The Federal Economic Action Plan reflects Canadian and Conservative values, yes, values of accountability, deficit control and of leveraging the resources of the community to recover from the second biggest recession in a century. The plan’s programs have clear criteria and specific deadlines, deadlines that insured the stimulus would benefit the economy when it most needed government intervention, when consumers

weren’t spending and lenders weren’t lending. Why has the plan succeeded so well? Because local governments across Canada agreed to get shovels in the ground right away. I acknowledge and applaud the hard work of many people who have helped this riding attract more stimulus funding than other areas. NV RCMP stakeout results in arrest

Man charged with 2 construction site break-ins NORTH Vancouver RCMP have arrested a man they believe is responsible for a pair of break-ins at a Brooksbank Avenue construction site. The arrest follows a spate of eight burglaries at the building in less than a month, although it’s not known if all the incidents are related. “It was actually pretty good police work from the patrol ofﬁcers that were able to catch him,” said Cpl. Peter DeVries, the detachment’s spokesman. “A lot of times on general duty policing you only have time to react to things. Usually the follow-up investigations

are left to the specialized units. But they had become aware of these repeated thefts from this site and they had taken it upon themselves to do some extra, targeted patrols, and it was as a result of this they were able to ﬁnd him.” Just before 5 a.m. Wednesday, ofﬁcers saw a man leaving the site on a bicycle with an attached trailer. Police say they discovered 136 kilograms of copper wire and several tools in the trailer. The cyclist was arrested without incident. The project’s site supervisor, Ben Marsolais, said whoever was responsible for the burglaries targeted copper wiring, copper piping and power tools. The partly demolished building was locked and fenced and his company employed security guards to patrol the perimeter,

NORTH Shore residents who need a criminal background check for their work or volunteer position are in for a wait, as changes to the way police screen for sex offenders have created a huge backlog.

Police offer two levels of background check, said Cpl. Matt Dawson, head of West Vancouver Police Department’s information services unit. The first is a simple search for convictions or criminal charges. The second level, called a vulnerable sector check, is offered to people who need to demonstrate their clean past before working or volunteering with children, seniors, or people with a disability. As well as checking for criminal charges, this screen also searches a national database of pardoned sex offenders. “If someone has been convicted of a sex offence and received a pardon, the understanding is that pardoned offence will remain in a different database at the national level that can be screened,” Dawson said. Police forward an applicant’s name and date of birth to the Canadian Police Information Centre in Ottawa, or CPIC, where they are checked against the records of pardoned sex offenders. Any applicants who generate a “hit” — a similar name and birthday — are then called into the police station to be fingerprinted. Once the fingerprints prove they are not the person in the database, police can issue a letter for the applicant’s employer. The problem, said Dawson, is that only B.C. and Alberta require a person to be fingerprinted when they change their name. “The worry is that you could have a pardoned sex offender who goes to a province that doesn’t take fingerprints, obtains a legal name change and could then evade a hit on the screening and get access to kids or vulnerable people,” he said. Starting in July, CPIC started to screen people twice: once for a similar name and then separately for a similar birthday and gender. With roughly 14,000 people in the database, most of them men, the chances of a male applicant having a similar birthday are very high. “What we’re encountering is that a lot of people are returning a hit based on that secondary search,” Dawson said. “So it’s saying ‘This person needs to get checked, this person needs to get checked, this person needs to get checked.’ It’s for a righteous reason. We don’t want these people getting access to kids, but what it has caused is an inordinate amount of people having to come down for fingerprinting.” In his three years of handling background checks before the new policy, Dawson has only had to call two people back to be fingerprinted. Since July, he has fingerprinted 19 people and has another 19 waiting to be processed. “It’s really taxing our resources and it’s an inconvenience to a person who is already volunteering their time,” he said. People asking for a check in order to get work will also pay a $25 search fee. Volunteers don’t have to pay the fee. Several applicants have expressed concern over privacy issues, Dawson said. The fingerprint records are destroyed in Ottawa after a successful search, but this will likely generate even more workload in the future as some organizations require annual checks. Clearance is now taking anywhere from a month to four months. North Vancouver RCMP is also affected by the national policy change.

That doesn’t work.” Drivers snared by Ramey or his colleagues will face a minimum $196 ticket, with fines escalating steeply from there. A motorist caught doing 52 kilometres per hour in a school zone will be slapped with a $253 ticket. “There’s a nice reminder that school is on,” Ramey said. “Hitting a child really ruins your day.” The BCAA traffic safety foundation says September and October see the greatest numbers of child pedestrian injuries and fatalities, with students aged five to 14 being the most at risk. The foundation’s research suggests that talking or texting on a cellphone while crossing the street increases a pedestrian’s chance of being struck by a vehicle.

Throughout their journey they stopped at schools in each community to talk to students about plastic use, and have built links with schools from South Africa to Sutherland secondary in North Vancouver. Back ashore, they plan to keep working on their mission, with a documentary called Our Plastic Oceans planned for release in 2011.

The response has always been overwhelmingly positive, said Ryan. “Probably the most rewarding part of the trip is speaking to kids. what they should do with their child’s newfound interest in recycling. Ryan, however, chooses to emphasise reducing the amount of plastic used by buying goods that aren’t prepackaged rather than recycling. Simply cutting plastic out of our lives is the only way to be sure it doesn’t end up in places like the North Paciﬁc Gyre, he said. But even if that does happen, this expedition has chronicled just how much pollution there is already ﬂoating in our oceans.

A newer movement that’s been ﬂoating around the North Shore for the past couple of years is the idea of having a Mandarin bilingual program in schools. Slightly different from immersion, the proposal is that 50 per cent of classes be taught in Mandarin and 50 per cent in English. Among those in support of the program is a group of more than 120 North Shore families who have formed an organization called Mandarin for B.C. schools. “The common theme amongst all of us is we see the future in terms of the criticality of China as a worldwide power and as a language in business, Mandarin is clearly going to be one of the predominant languages spoken in business,” says North Vancouver’s Linda Brown, spokeswoman for the group. “We talked and agreed that . . . this needs to be in the public school system if we want to make a go of it as something sustainable.” But with tightening budgets and school closures on the forefront right now, the idea may be on hold for a while, she adds. Nonetheless, the West Vancouver School District recently held two Mandarin and Fun summer camps to introduce children aged 5-11 to the language. “The kids are really getting a lot out of it they’re loving it and we’re hoping in the future we can continue something like that but as always it’s based on community need and our ability to provide space and classrooms,” says Jill Johnson, manager of community learning for the school district. Currently, the only space available for a Mandarin program is at Sentinel secondary, says Johnson. “At the elementary schools we’re full so because of that we haven’t been able to just yet get it started. But in the future if we can create the space, for sure we’ll provide the program without a doubt,” she says. “There’s a very strong community on the North Shore of parents that are interested in having Mandarin in their family as a main second language. . . . ■ Prepare lunch or a snack together the night before. ■ A special treat to celebrate their first day of school. ■ You can always take your child by the hand and introduce her to another child and parent(s). Compliment that child and ask if both of you can sit with them. Watch, see if your child is interested in the other child. ■ Let them know that you’ll be there to pick them up after school. ■ First days can influence their entire school experience. Do handle with care. Lots of hugs. A few caveats: Don’t: ■ Ask your child if it’s OK to leave. ■ Sneak out on them. ■ Take the child out of the room to say goodbye. But a growing amount of research shows that women investors are now stepping up to take a bigger role and tend to emphasize different aspects of investing than their male cohorts. These differences make for multiple strategies and ap-

proaches. Most notably, women tend to make safety their ﬁrst investment priority, just as they are more likely to wear a seatbelt, ﬂoss their teeth, or shun cigarette smoking. Women investors were much more focused on avoiding large losses, not underperforming a benchmark, or trading in the face of too much uncertainty. Men, on the other hand,

tend to hold more volatile portfolios and expect bigger returns. They trade more frequently and are less risk-averse. In looking for long-term growth, they may be more likely to make investments at the bottom of a market when fear is at its peak. Part of this difference is directly related to emotions. When asked about the ﬁnancial crisis, men were far more likely than women to say they were

“more angry than fearful.” Women on the other hand tended to feel more fearful than angry. Harvard psychology professor Jennifer Lerner says that anger tends to give us a heightened sense of certainty and control when in fact it may not be warranted. Instead of trying to ﬁght a bear market, a cautious investor is more likely to accept the reality of the dour situation and act accordingly. A mutual fund company found that among 2.7 million people with RRSP-like accounts, men were far more likely to sell their stock-based investments during the Credit Crisis of 2008 and 2009. Women were more likely to hold their positions and focus on the long-term. Both methods have their beneﬁts and need further analysis but it does illustrate how different the investment styles can be.

While neither sex may be better than the other at predicting the financial future, their combined influence on a portfolio can clearly offer benefits which I can personally attest to. Think along these lines, though, and you won’t go too far wrong. Whether white or red, forget about anything seriously oaked. It really just doesn’t make sense to be drinking a toothpick Chard with a nice piece of fish. (In this case, Gray Monk’s unwooded Chard would be a good thought.) Moreover, whatever anyone says about red wine with fish, stay away from anything obviously tannic and herbal. If you are going to stick with white, consider something fairly dry, rather than off dry, with decent structure, and also some acidity to contrast with the higher fat content in the fish. Also, give some thought as to how you’re going to prepare the fish and what it will be served with. For a simple lemon and dill dressing, consider staying fairly light, such as a Pinot Gris or Sauvignon Blanc if you like to use plenty of herbs. Pinot Gris works well with a fresh dill and yoghurt dressing, while if citrus is more dominant you might want to go with the Sauv. Blanc. If you like to barbecue with a sweeter glaze, a Riesling is a good choice to cut through the sweetness, although our advice — especially if the fish is super fresh — is to let the flavour of the Sockeye speak for itself. Another all too often overlooked white is B.C. Pinot Blanc — which was actually the wine that launched our obsession with food and wine pairing, way back in the ’90s. There was a reason organisers of the inaugural Salmon and Pinot Blanc “Marriage made in B.C.” chose that variety: first of all, there used to be no shortage of Pinot Blanc before much of it was ripped out to make way for our (fleeting) affair with

Chardonnay. But, more to the point, its quiet richness can work very well, without overpowering the fish — especially if you throw in a little fruit salsa. Tips for a rainy day bathroom break

“THE back door is open you two,” I said to my dogs. “You can go outside and do your business any time now!”

But they would have nothing of it. Instead they sat close to the edge of the open door threshold and stretched their necks to sniff the air outside as if it was ﬁlled with some sort of toxic substance . . . rain! Seriously, you would think my dogs would melt if they actually had to go into the wet stuff to do their business in the back yard, yet they will happily go for a walk in the wet stuff, even joyfully run through knee deeps puddles. I don’t pay their balking at the rain any heed. I simply close the door and they both go and lie down. I know that soon their little bladders will be brimming and they will willingly go outside to relieve themselves. This is not something I recommend to those people

who have young dogs just beginning to get the hang of house training. My dogs are older and are fully trained to do their business outside so I have no concerns at all about them doing their “thing” in the house. With a young dog, still in the throes of learning the rules to house training, you could ﬁnd yourself cleaning up a mess on your Persian carpet. House training in the rainy season has both its positive and negative sides. In the sunny summer season we tend

to leave the doors open and Fido has full run of the in-out experience at will. This certainly allows for a dog to get the hang of going outside rather than in but it does not allow a dog to learn how to “ask” or “let you know” that it has to go out, because it has never been expected or taught to do so. Dogs do not automatically let you know they have to go outside and pee. They have to be taught to show you some short of a cue. The same way they have to be taught to sit on the command “sit.” This human type of communication is not hardwired into their heads. They have to learn how to communicate with us and we have to teach them how to do it. The beneﬁt of this is that we can teach our dogs to use cues or forms of communication that are easy for us to understand and recognize. So even if the weather is blue skies and warm breezes, keep the doors closed to teach your dog how to ask to

go outside. During the rainy season we keep our doors closed, so Fido doesn’t have the free run to the outdoors as he did in the warm weather. The down side is that Fido tends to have more accidents in the home because we humans are not able to recognize a young dog’s behaviour that indicates it has to go to the bathroom, such as exiting a room quickly from a nap or play, snifﬁng around the ﬂoor or the edge of doorways or beginning to circle with their derrieres pointing to the hardwood. But the rainy season does give us an opportunity to teach our dogs how to let us know they have to go out, such as sitting by the door to the back yard. Once the dog is outside and doing its business I don’t typically recommend using treats as a reward system for doing their business. Dogs receive a self-reward by experiencing the relief that is felt from emptying their

bladder or otherwise. But there are exceptions to this rule, such as a dog that has been very challenging to house train — challenging means that it has taken longer than one month from the time you brought your new dog home. These dogs should receive an extra reward given by you to encourage the behaviour of doing their business outside. On rainy days, when dogs

simply do not enjoy standing in the rain, go with them into the yard and reward them with a treat once they eliminate in the yard on the super soggy days. I know we are still a few months (hopefully) away from the rainy season but it is wise and good leadership to adopt the habit of insisting your dog ask to go outside regardless of the time of year. joan@k9kinship.com

Sanya: Due to its remoteness, Sanya has sometimes been called Tianyahaijiao, which means “the end of the sky and ocean.” Some prime ministers in various dynasties were exiled there. Sanya’s climate lies within a tropical wet and dry climate, roughly on the same latitude as the island of Hawaii, featuring very warm weather all year around. It features a relatively lengthy wet season and a relatively short dry season. It has a population of 536,000 as of 2006. After the capital, Haikou, it is the second most populous city of the island. SO here we are, sitting under palm fronds and Chinese lanterns, listening to the surf of the South China Sea break on a sugarwhite beach. We’re eating Russian borscht, drinking Malaysian beer and trying to get our morose, blond waiter to smile — or at least pronounce the Cyrillic letters on his name tag. “Muck-zeem,” he finally growls in response to our clumsy hand gestures, and we get it: Maxim. He walks away rolling his eyes, a study in Slavic disdain. Travelling in Asia, one experiences a lot of “where-the-hell-are-we” moments, occasions when the glamour, the kitsch or the squalor (more often, all three) overwhelm the senses. Nowhere is this giddy surreality more palpable than at Dadong Hai, the long, gorgeous horseshoe beach in Sanya at the southern tip of China’s Hainan Island. The Chinese call Hainan “the Hawaii of China,” because the island, China’s southernmost territory (not counting a handful of much smaller islands whose sovereignty is disputed by Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Brunei), is at a latitude roughly parallel to Hawaii. And because the island offers, in Sanya, the country’s only tropical beach resort. If it strikes you that “China” and “beach resort” shouldn’t be in the same sentence, take it as fair warning. Incongruities abound in Sanya. More than 18 million tourists flock to Hainan Island every year, yet it is all but unknown outside China, and Sanyo’s beautiful beaches are practically empty all day long. Unlike every other beach resort in Asia — from Thailand’s Phuket to Bali’s Khuta and the Philippines’ Borokay — almost no one in Sanya speaks English. But everyone, from the desk clerks to the beach touts, speaks some Russian to anybody who is not obviously Chinese. You’ll look long and hard to find a decent hamburger in Dadong Hai, but if you have to stroll more than 100 metres for a good blintz, you’re not paying attention. Outside China, Sanya is perhaps best known as the site of a not-no-secret nuclear submarine base, whose construction made headlines in 2008. But for the

Chinese, it is a seaside resort that is warm in the winter yet doesn’t require all those tedious exit permits and entry visas that are the bane of would-be tourists in mainland China. For western ex-pats based in southern Chinese cities such as Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macau, Sanya is the perfect weekend getaway, barely an hour away by air, but boasting beaches as good as you’ll ﬁnd anywhere in Southeast Asia. Sanya is neither nearby (most Russians have to fly six or more hours to get here), nor politically convenient (all foreigners, including Russians, need visas to visit China). Chalk up the phenomenon to some savvy entrepreneurship back in the late ’90s when Sanya was just beginning to be developed as a tourist destination. Sergey Zhang Sha, the Russian-born son of a Chinese circus performer who visited Hainan soon after it was made a province in 1988, brought his first Russian tourist to Sanya in 1997. Since Russians were the first foreign tourists, services developed that catered particularly to Russians. This attracted even more Russians. Now most of the service-related signage in Dadong Hai is in Russian as well as Chinese. The Russian tourists are about the only people you’ll find among the phalanx of beach lounges during the day (other than the strolling peddlers and the beachside masseuses). The Chinese share a national trait that makes a beach holiday counter-intuitive: they hate the sun, avoid it as if it were emitting some deadly radiation from outer space. (Oh, wait a minute ... ). The most prevalent product on cosmetic shelves in China is whitening cream, so sunbathing is about as popular a seaside activity as impaling yourself on a beach umbrella. As a result, Sanya’s beaches are all but empty until the sun starts to throw long shadows about 5:30 in the evening. Then the shore is crowded with merrymaking Chinese, who will continue to frolic in the surf until long after dark, 10 p.m. at least. We stayed at the Pearl River Garden Hotel right above the boardwalk on Dadong Hai. It’s a Chinese-style four-star hotel, which means the beds are about as comfortable as a sheet of plywood, though you can coax the front office staff to send you more bedding to cushion the slab. On the plus side, our room was spacious and clean and had a long balcony overlooking the

hotel’s large pool and that beautiful beach, all for the equivalent of about $100 CDN a night, including a buffet breakfast.

If you go: When to go: The drier and cooler months (temperatures in the mid-20s) are December through March, but even the rainiest months have plenty of sunshine. The Chinese New Year holiday break (January or February, depending on year) ﬁnds Sanya crowded and expensive, so be forewarned. How to get there: There are direct ﬂights to Sanya airport from most large cities in mainland China as well as Hong Kong. There’s also a train from Guangzhou that is loaded, in its entirety, aboard a ferry to reach Hainan Island before continuing to Sanya. The trip takes about 15 hours. What you’ll need: A passport and a valid Chinese visa. Where to stay: Dadong Hai has a marvellous beach, good restaurants fronting the beach and plenty of good, reasonably priced Chinese hotels. If you’re looking for internationalstyle hotels, check out Yalong Bay, an enclave of high-end resorts operated by Sheraton, Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, Holiday Inn and the like. There are also youth hostels and budget hotels in Sanya City and Dadong Hai. Where to eat: Russian and Chinese food is everywhere in Dadong Hai. If you must have western fare, try the Sanya Rainbow Bar & Grill at 99 Yuya Rd. in Dadong Hai, where pasta, Tex-Mex, burgers and beer are available at reasonable prices. Pizza Corner, right off the boardwalk on Dadong Hai, has some of the best pizza we’ve had in Asia. Get a takeout order and eat on the beach. What to do: All the typical beach resort activities are available: Sea-Doo rentals, parasailing, glass-bottom boats, snorkelling and scuba expeditions. Or you can take a tour to Nanwan Monkey Island to frolic with the macaques, or visit the Betel Nut Ethnic Minorities Park about 30 kilometres outside Sanya. But nothing beats lying on that underpopulated beach.

ERIE, Pennsylvania — It was a famous victory. But more than that, the Battle of Lake Erie, during the War of 1812, has gone down in history for its rhetoric, for it put a rousing battle cry and a proud slogan into the language. It happened in the afternoon of Sept. 10, 1813. Six British warships and nine much-smaller American craft were engaged in a furious battle off Put-In-Bay, a bit west of Erie. Bob Fischer, a guide at the Erie Maritime Museum, explains: “In the heat of battle the (U.S.) commander, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, shifted his command to the brig Niagara when his ﬂagship, the Lawrence, was disabled. On board Niagara he raised

the Lawrence’s flag with the words ‘Don’t give up the ship.’ The Americans rallied and forced the British to surrender.” Then, says Fischer, Perry sat down and wrote to his commander. Those words have become as famous as the battle cry on the flag: “We have met the enemy and they are ours.” It was a turning point in the war, a battle that arguably changed the political geography of North America. If the British had won, Lake Erie would have remained in British hands and, some historians say, the border would not now run through the Great Lakes. Author Pierre Berton, in his book The Great Lakes, suggests that the border might be farther south, “perhaps making Canadian cities out of Buffalo, Cleveland and Detroit.” A reconstructed Niagara is the centrepiece of the Erie Maritime Museum. Visitors can tour her when she’s in port. The tall ship makes summer cruises on the Great Lakes as a “goodwill ambassador” of Pennsylvania, of which she has been designated the official flagship.

A video and artifacts in the museum tell the whole story of the battle and of the Niagara. The brig was one of six built in Erie that took part in the pivotal battle. She sank in 1820 but the hulk was raised and rebuilt for the centenary of the battle in 1913. This ship, with many repairs, sailed until the 1980s, when it was decided she was beyond saving, so the present Niagara, an exact reconstruction (but with a back-up motor) was built, using some of the timbers from the original. She was commissioned in 1990. An exhibit on Commodore Perry says he was just 27 when he became the hero of Lake Erie. He died of yellow fever in the Caribbean in 1820, aged 34. Inside the museum there’s a reconstruction of part of a gun deck of the Niagara, with manikins of sailors loading the cannon. This year, the Blues will be looking at new talent, and five returning starters, to build on last year’s season, which resulted in a semifinal loss at the provincial playoff level to Douglas College. “We have some great players coming in, as well as the great players we have from last year who are coming back this year. We have some exciting new young players and a lot of good midfielders and forwards who can put the ball in the net and make things happen, so from that standpoint we’re very excited,” said head coach Dailly, who was voted BCCAA Coach of the Year for men’s soccer in 2003, 2004 (when he also won CCAA Coach of the Year), 2005 and 2007. Dailly’s associate coach, Darren Rath, thinks the team’s newcomers — Javid Khan, Tom Mallette, Cam Parkes, Adam Staschuk and Brian Shaw, in particular — could make an impact. “Those five have been involved with the National Training Center and Whitecaps prospect programs. FRASER - Robert Anthony (Tony). It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a very wonderful man. Born in Grand-Mere Quebec on January 20, 1945, Tony passed away peacefully at home into the arms of his Lord with Kathy, his wife of 19 years and brother-in-law Bill at his side. Tony is survived by his wife Kathy, son Justin, Son Jordan (Janine), daughter Shannon (Jeff), Stepsons Aaron, Adam (Amanda), Corey (Ing), five granddaughters, Lauren, Carly, Teagan, Avery and Madison. Brothers Reed (Judy), Mike (Marina) and Pete (Jenny Lynn), Mother-in-law Win, Brother-in-law Bill (Jamie) and many other family and friends. Tony graduated from SFU with a B.A., spent the first part of his working life in a management position with Bulldog Bag Co. in Richmond and then went on to own his own painting business where he was loved by many for his excellent work and laughing and gentle spirit. As a young father Tony coached baseball, soccer and hockey and was also a cub scout leader. In his later years Tony was very involved with Christian City Church Vancouver. A memorial service will be held at Lynn Valley Full Gospel on Friday September 10th @ 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow.

LOUGHLAN Duane Douglas (‘‘Red’’) June 9, 1936 - August 30, 2010 Red, fondly remembered by his friends, passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital on August 30, 2010. He was predeceased by his mother and father. Red had many interests and was an avid reader. He was a member of, and retired from the Telecommunications Workers Union. Red was also very active at Unit 45, Army and Navy Club. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A service will be held at Boal Chapel, First Memorial on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 2:00pm.

MAPLETON, Nora Elaine (Bettie) passed away peacefully in Lions Gate Hospital on Tuesday August 24th at the age of 90, following a brief illness. Predeceased by her husband David H. Mapleton in 1992, Bettie is survived by her brother C. William Evans of Calgary; daughter Marjorie and grand-dog Cefyn; son David A., daughter-in-law Lorraine, grandchildren Christopher and Kelsey and grandson-in-law Jeff; and nieces and nephews. Bettie was born in Vernon, where she met David H, of Telkwa, BC, who was attending the military training camp. They married in 1944 and in1951, moved to North Vancouver where, together, they raised their family, made lifelong friends and over the years enjoyed traveling to many destinations. Throughout her life, Bettie put her numerous creative talents to the benefit of various community organizations and individuals. When it came to her family and friends, our Mum’s thoughtfulness, generosity and love knew no bounds. She will be deeply missed. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of 6 East LGH, and especially Dr. Paul Sugar and the Palliative Care team for making her final days comfortable and dignified. A private family service to celebrate her life was held on Friday August 27th. In lieu of flowers, Bettie would have preferred that you get together with family and/or friends, enjoy a nice bottle of wine, and to raise your glass in honour of her long and meaningful life.

CHAPMAN - Audrey Jean Audrey Chapman (nee Williams) passed away peacefully and quietly August 26, 2010 in Lions Gate Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur (1967). Left to miss her are daughter Carol Forrester, granddaughters: Seanna (Wallace) Koopmans and Tori (Mike) Dolmans, son Bob (Agnes) Chapman, grandsons Spencer and Troy Chapman. She was the much loved Great Grandma (“GG”) of great-grand-daughters Emily and Charlotte Koopmans and Kailannie Dolmans and great-grandson Makaio Dolmans. She also leaves behind sister Lois and brother Ted. Audrey was born the year 1923 in South Vancouver and lived her entire life in the Lower Mainland, with the past 64 years in West Vancouver. After working in the placement office of MacMillan Bloedel for many years, Audrey was blessed with an early, healthy and active retirement. She enjoyed travel, bridge games, her many friends, and the camaraderie of the West Van Seniors Centre. Audrey was a proponent of physical activity and could always been seen doing her beloved walks on the West Vancouver seawall. Above all time spent with her family, especially the celebrations, meant everything to her. Many thanks to Dr. Sugar and the Palliative Care staff at Lions Gate Hospital for your kind and considerate assistance. No service by request. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, or the charity of your choice. A private gathering will be held at a later date.

SMITH, Wallace E. 1923-2010

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our family patriarch. Wallace was born in Perth N.B. and grew up in Fredericton. Wallace joined the RCAF in 1941 and went overseas from 1942-1945. Upon his return, he claimed his sweetheart (Marian Caverhill) and they married in 1946. Wallace worked for H.J. Heinz for 37 years until his retirement in 1982. Due to promotions from Salesman in N.B. to Sales Manager for Western Canada, the family kept moving west from Fredericton to Moncton, then to London Ont. (1962) and to North Vancouver B.C (1969). After retiring in 1982, Wallace and Marian spent 25 winters in Lake Havasu, Arizona and travelled or cruised to many other parts of the world. Wallace was happiest spending time with his family and puttering at home in his garden or at the Glen near Mt. Baker. He loved a good game and a good laugh. Wallace will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by family and friends. He leaves behind Marian (his wife of 64 years); children Don, Kathy (David), Jan (Doug) and Carol (Pierre); Grandchildren Cameron (Sherry), Andrea (Scott), Megan and Craig and great grand children Haley and Nathan “Wallace“. Many thanks to his compassionate caregivers at home and at Lions Gate Hospital. A Service Celebrating Wallace’s life will be held at Highlands United Church, 3255 Edgemont Blvd, N. STEVENSON - George William George, born at home on February 27, 1917 in Harding, Manitoba, died peacefully August 29, 2010 as his family lovingly said goodbye. “We love you Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa”. George was predeceased by his beloved wife Irene in 1973, and his brother Harold. He leaves behind his loving companion Joyce Borrie. George is survived by his son Dave (Sue), grandchildren Amy (Jason), Matt, Sam, Jesse and Aaron, great grandchildren Callen and Koen, brother Gordon (Jean) and extended family. George grew up farming in Manitoba. He arrived in Vancouver in 1948 and built a career in building supplies in West Vancouver. With his amazing knowledge, he helped the builders and home handymen create fine homes on the North Shore for 34 years. On his retirement George spent fifteen years as a volunteer driving for the West Vancouver Seniors Centre, honored at his second retirement with a lifetime membership. As a youth, George was an accomplished athlete in hockey and baseball; he won curling, lawn bowling and golf competitions over many years. George was a strong, quiet, caring man who lived at home until his health failed in the last month of his life. George was a remarkable man. He made many friends and lived a life of service to his community. A memorial celebration will be held Friday September 3, 2010 in the Spirit Room, West Vancouver Community Centre, at 2:00 pm. We will share of our love for this man and tell ‘George stories’ to honour his life.
