Team Canada women’s hockey team pose for the traditional victory photo following their victory over the USA in the gold medal game in women’s hockey in Vancouver Thursday.

Canadian women score the gold Benjamin Alldritt

balldritt@nsnews.com Canada is still golden in women’s hockey. Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Que., led the way with both goals in a convincing 2-0 shutout of the hyper-rival American team at Canada Hockey Place Thursday. Shannon Szabados was coach Melody Davidson’s late choice to guard the pipes for Team Canada, and the 23-year-old Olympic rookie did her chief proud, pulling some stylish glove saves out her hat and frustrating the American power play throughout the night with a 28-save effort. If anyone still wonders how Canada remains so dominant in women’s hockey, 18-year-old Poulin should give you an idea. Not old enough to drink in British Columbia, Poulin still had the poise to blast her shot glove side past two-time world champion American goalie Jessie Vetter late in the first period and again three minutes later in a four-on-four situation. Surely the youngster has got quite a few more Olympic appearances left in her career. Captain and all-around talismanic player Hayley Wickenheiser

was strong for her side, blocking shots and leading a spirited penalty kill, which saw off back-to-back minors and a 40-second five-on-three. The rivalry between these teams is infamous. After losing in the first Olympic contest, Nagano in 1998, the Canadian side has now carried away the subsequent three titles. With little to no other credible opposition, both teams know the

Sidney Crosby and Melissa Hollingsworth are the sexiest Olympic athletes, at least according to single people trying to find a date online through Lavalife. A poll of 1,000 single Lavalife users found that figure skating, alpine skiing, hockey and snowboarding are the sexiest Winter Olympic sports. Fifty-five per cent of single women picked hockey star Crosby as sexiest, followed by American skier Bode Miller. Skeleton racer Hollingsworth topped the men’s poll at 50 per cent, narrowly beating out American skier and Sports Illustrated bikini model Lindsey Vonn.

Rochette takes Bronze Benjamin Alldritt

balldritt@nsnews.com With tens of millions of well-wishers crossing their fingers for her, Joannie Rochette’s free skate program at the Pacific Coliseum Thursday was

enough to earn her a bronze medal in ladies figure skating and close one of the most compelling stories of the Vancouver Games.
