Drug cost a likely death sentence

IF Garrett Shakespeare wants to live a full life, the cost will be approximately $500,000 a year.

Shakespeare has an extremely rare and deadly disease that attacks his red blood cells. There is a potential cure, and it’s approved by the Canadian government.

But Shakespeare can’t afford the treatment.

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria is a potentially fatal blood disorder usually managed with blood transfusions, but Shakespeare, 22, said his doctors advised against that treatment.

“My particular count of bad cells is so high that a transfusion wouldn’t be very effective,” he said before heading to his job as a lifeguard and swimming coach.

Shakespeare, who lives in North Vancouver, said he’s hoping to be treated with infusions of eculizumab, more commonly known as Soliris, a treatment he said might be a miracle drug.

“I would love to get some of that,” he said, his voice perking up at the mention of the drug.

The treatment was approved in Canada two years ago, but the price tag has put it out of reach for Shakespeare, who has dealt with PNH since he was a child.

“I had a stomach ache for months when I was in Grade 5. They tested me for everything under the sun.”

Shakespeare was an avid hockey player until his diagnosis at 11, when the risk of blood clots and thrombosis forced him to stop playing.

During high school, Shakespeare said he was often sidelined by fatigue and abdominal pain. “Everyone would be going to play basketball or something, and I wouldn’t be able to go because every time I stepped, it felt like someone was stabbing me in the stomach.”

These days, Shakespeare said his daily pain alternates between manageable and excruciating.

CANADA does not have a catastrophic drug plan, forcing many people with chronic conditions to reach deep into their pockets to pay for prescription medicine.

“Health-care delivery is a provincial matter,” said North Vancouver Conservative MP Andrew Saxton.

Saxton said any difficulty with the cost of prescription drugs is an issue to be discussed with the patient’s MLA. Saxton said the drugs approved under the umbrella of Fair Pharmacare is also a provincial issue.

“It hasn’t really been an election issue,” Saxton said of the catastrophic

Taleeb Noormohamed, the Liberal candidate in North Vancouver, said enacting a catastrophic drug plan would require federal and provincial governments 20 11 working together.

FINGER pointing, bullying and name-calling aren’t just child’s play.

As Canadians prepare to head back to the polls for the fourth time in less than a decade, federal politicians’ campaign tours are in full swing — and attack ads are everywhere.

Smear campaigning — also called mudslinging, dirty politics or negative advertising — is a political tactic that’s been used for decades to help election candidates gain the upper edge in the race to the polls. And according to Dennis Pilon, a political science professor at the University of Victoria, it works.

“It’s immoral. It’s wrong. It’s undemocratic. It reflects poorly on the people who use it. But, it works,” he said. “And that’s why the people who employ it, use it.”

According to Pilon, attack ads often work their magic by discouraging people from voting — a tactic that political parties could use to maintain their lead in the polls.

“We know from the studies of negative advertising that it actually drives people away from the polls,” he said. “Some of our parties don’t want people to come out, like the Conservatives.”

It’s a political ploy that’s been around for decades — politicians haranguing their opponents using television, radio and newspaper ads to destroy reputations and secure more votes on election day.

FormerU.S.presidentLyndonJohnson’s“Daisy”advertisement is most commonly cited as the first modern smear campaign. During the 1964 U.S. presidential election, the Democratic candidate was up against Barry Goldwater, a republican candidate from Arizona, widely known for his pro-nuclear defence policies.

During the campaign, Johnson launched an advertisement that showed a girl counting daisy petals, followed by images of mushrooms clouds erupting from a nuclear explosion in the

background and the famous words, “We must either love each other or we must die.” The advertisement, airing on television only once, helped Johnson secure a landslide victory.

For Lindsay Meredith, a Simon Fraser University political marketing expert, the 1964 Daisy campaign is an example of fear 20 11 advertising — the idea that, “if you don’t vote for me, something bad will happen to you.” Fear advertising is directly related to negative advertising, a common advertising strategy used by political parties around the world today, he said.

According to Meredith, the negative advertising trend took off in Canada in the early 1990s when the Conservative government, under Kim Campbell’s leadership, launched a highly personal attack ad against Liberal candidate Jean Chrétien.

“Things started to go really haywire in the politics world,” Meredith said. “Things started to play a lot dirtier.”

The 1993 Kim Campbell ad mocked Chrétien’s Bell’s palsy, a disorder that affects control of muscle movement in the face. The ad caused massive public outcry and badly hurt the Conservative government’s chances in that year’s election. “The conservatives stepped on a big landmine,” Meredith said.

For the SFU marketing professor, the notorious Kim Campbell advertisement demonstrates the potentially disastrous effects of negative advertising during election campaigns.

“The bottom line is that, if you’re going to use negative advertising, be very, very careful,” Meredith said. “You’ve got really solid grounds for doing it. Don’t attack his family. Don’t attack his dog. Leave all that personal stuff alone.”

The Conservative government’s “pooping puffin” attack ad is another cautionary tale of the dangers posed by personal attacks in political parties’ campaign advertisements.

In Canada’s 2008 federal election, the Conservative Party found itself in hot water after launching the advertisement on the Internet against its main rival, Liberal leader Stéphane Dion. The ad, which showed a little puffin flying past Dion and defecating on his shoulder, caused public outraged and forced a rare apology from Conservative leader Stephen Harper.

Instead, the more successful attack ads target candidates’ policies and concrete facts that can be verified, Meredith said. But so far, the 2011 election candidates — particularly Stephen Harper, Michael Ignatieff and Jack Layton — are playing on the rougher, more dangerous side, he added. “They’re really pushing the limits.

They have to get away from the personality assassination context, and that’s what we’re in right now.”

For the Green Party of Canada, enough is enough. In late March, the party released an “anti-attack ad,” criticizing other parties for their aggressive, sensational campaign advertisements.

The anti-attack ad came on the heels of party leader Elizabeth May’s public statement in January that decried the use of mudslinging, calling it “anti-democratic and anti-Canadian.”

“We need a change,” said Greg Dowman, North Vancouver’s Green Party candidate. “The people I’m meeting on the street say they’re disgusted with Harper, they’re disgusted with the Laytons of the world, they’re disgusted with the Ignatieffs. I’m sure every person in government is intelligent, but why does it translate into routine schoolyard bullying?”

But according to Meredith, negative campaigning has become increasingly popular amongst Canadian politicians — and it’s unlikely that such tactics will disappear any time soon.

“It’s hard not to get nasty when the other guy is nasty to you,” he said. “Your first reaction is to hit back.”

“It’s not very effective at all,” he said of the treatment.

While the steroids dull his pain and help with his anemia, Shakespeare is concerned about the weight gain, acne, mood swings and skin irritations that have accompanied his steroid use.

Shakespeare has been on prednisone for nine months, but said he’s worried prolonged use could result in a loss of bone density and hormone problems.

“The only other treatment they have right now is the prednisone. And my doctors told me that I can probably only last another year on the prednisone because of all the side effects.

“So I’m kind of stuck.”

Barry Katsof, the president of the Canadian Association of PNH Patients, said he was in a similar situation a few years ago.

The disease forced Katsof into early retirement

with bad kidneys, an inflamed liver and no energy.

In 2008, Katsof went to the United States for Soliris treatments.

After a few infusions of the drug, which was not yet legal in Canada, Katsof said he made a complete recovery.

Patients receive a 35-minute infusion of the drug once every two weeks for the rest of their lives.

Katsof said his red blood cells returned to normal levels and his hemoglobin stabilized within two months of beginning the treatment.

Katsof, 63, who now hikes, cycles and skis, said other sufferers of PNH could make a similar recovery.

“Every patient I know that’s on this medication, we’re back to where we were before we got sick,” he said.

Since his recovery, Katsof has lobbied provincial governments in Canada to fund the drug.

According to a study published by the American Society of Hematology, patients with PNH live as long as people in the general population when receiving long-term treatments of eculizumab.

The drug also eliminated the need for blood transfusion in 40 of 61 PNH patients, according to the study.

When asked why the drug was not funded by provinces in Canada, Katsof responded with one word: “Price.”

“It’s the provincial government’s responsibility to decide which medications they will fund,” he said.

Shakespeare agrees. “Right now, what’s preventing me from getting [Soliris] is that the Canadian government won’t subsidize it,” he said.

For Shakespeare, the government can’t move quickly enough.

“I can feel my condition getting worse every week,” he said. “I keep seeing all this research that says 50 per cent of PNH patients die within 10 years.

I’m on year 11.”

In a 2008 international survey, 17 per cent of Canadian adults with a chronic condition said they pay at least $1,000 each year for treatments not covered by a health plan.

Benedict received the sentence after pleading guilty to robbery. His defence lawyer said Benedict knew his accomplice was carrying the machete, but never expected the man to use it.

The victim of the attack, a visiting student from Korea who had been attending Simon Fraser University, was standing outside a restaurant at the Quay shortly before 1 a.m. with his brother and a group of friends on Jan. 28, when Benedict instigated the robbery by demanding cigarettes, money and cellphones, threatening the group with a knife.

When the victim turned around, another man — Christopher Lambert, 18 — struck him in the back of the head with a machete.

The victim was rushed to Lions Gate Hospital where he received emergency treatment.

After the attack, the three attackers ran away. Police reviewed video surveillance and arrested Benedict that same day.

Lambert was arrested three days later. A 17-year-old from Surrey was also charged in the attack.

Benedict’s lawyer, Dave Walsoff, said his client has a troubled background and was drunk at the time of the attack.

In addition to the jail term, Benedict was placed on three years probation with conditions to stay away from alcohol and drugs, submit to breath and urine tests if requested by police, and to get counselling and take medication if directed. He was also ordered to stay away from Lonsdale Quay and to write a letter of apology to his victim, who has since returned to Korea. Lambert was previously jailed for two years for his role in the attack.

desperately trying to deliver services,” he said.

When asked about extremely expensive treatments, Noormohamed said the government should be diligent in examining why certain drugs come with such a high price.

“We can’t just throw money at it,” he said, saying each treatment needed to be as cost effective as possible.

However, he said, “We need to make sure when people get sick, the government has their back.”

Michael Charrois, North Vancouver NDP candidate, said the federal government needs to do more to support patients with costly ailments.

“Right now the provinces are being forced to cover these medications. We believe it’s something the federal government should be ponying up for as well.”

Charrois said making sure all Canadians have access to treatment should be a top priority. “If treatments are out there, people should have access to them,” he said. “If it’s a matter of life and death, it shouldn’t matter if it’s expensive.”

Green Party candidate Greg Dowman agreed.

A functioning catastrophic drug plan would be difficult to enact without collaboration at several levels of government, said Dowman “I think there would be a terrific opportunity to share in the funding and encouragement of unique procedures. . . . I don’t know if it’s possible, but wouldn’t it be neat,” he said.

“Everybody could put a little flag on that and say, ‘We did it together.’”

Dowman said treating rare disorders would likely always be expensive, but he hoped patients could get help from the government. “I would hope there would be allowance for unique procedures,” he said. “I think if we look at the States and how many families and homes have gone completely broke from taking care of a loved one . . . I don’t think that’s what Canada’s about.”

Dowman also said charity work and telethons could be valuable in helping people dealing with a large financial burden caused by prescription drugs.

According to a 2007 Commonwealth Fund survey, eight per cent of Canadian respondents said they chose not to fill a prescription in the previous year because of the cost.

F the 308 MPs who will make up Canada’s next Parliament, let’s hope one, at least, takes up the cause of rare diseases.

In this issue we reported on the impossible situation faced by a man with a rare and potentially deadly blood disorder. The drug that can bring his disease under control costs $500,000 a year. Our provincial health system will not foot the bill, making it essentially impossible for him to get well.

One might imagine the decision not to cover the drug is part of a carefully thoughtoutcost-controlmeasureonthe part of our government — a necessary and consistent policy designed to keep health care costs under control.

In fact it’s nothing of the sort.

Unlike many Western countries, Canada has no national strategy for

the treatment of rare diseases. There’s no single definition under the law, and no consistency in coverage between provinces. In some parts of Canada, treatments that run into the $500,000range are covered, and in other parts they aren’t. And there’s no allowance made for the necessarily small drug trials associated with these conditions.

One-time North Vancouver MP Don Bell attempted to address some of these issues in a private member’s bill three years ago. It was passed by Parliament, but died when an election was called.

The issue tends to be sidelined because, by definition, it affects so few of us. It needs a champion. Let’s hope one of our elected representatives has the courage and character to play that role.

Say goodbye to North Van’s character

Dear Editor: A seriously flawed communication process over development exists between the District of North Vancouver’s mayor and council and many of its homeowners and community resident associations — especially those opposed to what they contend has consistently been a hidden agenda that time and again favours excessive, unwelcomed development, often in arrogant defiance of the community’s expressed wishes and overwhelming objections.

Examples abound of the severe disconnect that exists between mayor and council and those they’re supposed to represent: a 600-unit high-rise project in Seymour, pushed through despite the support of a meagre four per cent of the residents; an 11-storey high-rise tower in Parkgate, approved despite an almost riotous public hearing; a high-rise apartment complex at Capilano Road and Paisley in Edgemont, opposed by 98.6 per cent of the community; are a few of many glaring examples.

Yet the district’s mayor and council continue to deny that any hidden agenda exists behind its numerous prodevelopment decisions. Yet there is a serious breach of trust between Mayor Richard Walton’s council and those who’ve all but given up trying to petition the district to truly listen and respond to their frustrated desire to protect and preserve their ever-diminishing iconic North Shore way of life, one that originally drew them to live here and cherish, passionately, the heritage and rich character of their single-family neighbourhoods, the lush trees and pristine natural world around them, and their quiet, traffic-calmed residential streets.

My Lower Capilano neighbours tell me: “We won’t waste our time anymore objecting to the district’s development plans, because they’ve already made up their minds.” “Development’s a slam-dunk.” “Nothing we can say or do will change anything.” “You can’t trust them.” “We have the weakest council we’ve ever had when it comes to fighting for a liveable quality

of life.” “The district’s bylaws, building codes and development plans are designed to be twisted in favour of development.”

The recent unveiling of the goals and objectives in the second draft of the district’s new official community plan should be the subject of a district-wide referendum — hopefully rescinding them, or the pressure for highdensity development will ramp up big time.

The OCP’s sweeping neighbourhood and housing action plans and its proposed village and town centres in the Lower Capilano-Marine Drive, Lynn Valley and Maplewood areas suggest a potentially nightmarish reality, one that will seriously challenge the West End of Vancouver for the title Canada’s densest urban environment.

If things go as dreaded, it’s goodbye to the North Shore way of life beloved by hopeful dreamers.

No political will to help the Kuliseks Dear Editor: The anguish of Pavel Kulisek and his wife and young daughters described in your March 30 story, NV Man in Mexican Jail Tries Suicide, is only worsened by the repeated hollow assurances of MP Andrew Saxton and others that Ottawa is doing everything it can to assist the Kulisek family.

The mere fact that Mr. Kulisek remains incarcerated in Mexico more than three years after being wrongfully arrested and charged speaks volumes about what little this government has done to effectively assist the Kuliseks. If there is truly the political will to extricate Mr. Kulisek from this appalling situation, it can surely be done. Sadly, it may take the onset of a federal election and the collective outcry of potential voters demanding action, to actually make it happen.

Ideology versus electability

WILL NDP members choose a leader based on who is best suited to get the party elected to government, or who best represents their political philosophy or ideology?

If the former is the basis for voting, Mike Farnworth should be the hands-down winner. If it’s the latter, then Adrian Dix may prove the victor.

The latest Ipsos-Reid poll shows that Farnworth beats his rivals every which way when it comes to who stands the best chance of attracting voters to the NDP. The others aren’t even close to matching his popularity with the general public, or with people who voted NDP in the last election.

He is also the only candidate who, when pitted head to head with Premier Christy Clark when it comes to who would make the best premier, offers a competitive contest. The others all lag Clark’s popularity by a wide margin.

The online poll was conducted between March 31 and April 4, and with a sample size of 700 the margin of error is plus or minus 3.7 per cent.

The poll is simply the latest one to show that Farnworth continues to best his rivals in general popularity. But will these polls influence the 28,000 or so party members when they begin voting for a new leader next week?

The question of winning power versus maintaining ideological positions has long vexed many NDP members. Some seem more comfortable in the politically safe atmosphere of Official Opposition rather than in government, which requires constant compromising on many issues to maintain power.

Farnworth is very much the most centrist candidate, which explains his broader appeal. Dix is a class-warfare advocate, who unabashedly wants to push the party left because he feels that would motivate its core to get out and vote.

Dix correctly notes more than a million voters simply don’t vote. Although I don’t think a majority of them necessarily adhere to socialist values, presumably a number of them are indeed disaffected NDP voters who may find Dix’s candidacy attractive.

But the Ipsos-Reid poll seems to suggest otherwise.

On the questions of who would be most likely to motivate people to vote for the NDP, Farnworth comes out on top by a wide margin (25 per cent versus just eight per cent for Dix and four per cent for John Horgan).

Dix, on the other hand, is the distinct choice among voters when asked who would be the least likely candidate to get people to vote for his party (19 per cent versus just nine per cent for Farnworth).

Perhaps most telling, however, is how the candidates fare in a head-to-head matchup with Clark on the question of who would make the best premier.

Clark has a wide lead over both Dix (44 per cent to 25 per cent for Dix) and Horgan (41 per cent versus 22 per cent).

Farnworth trails Clark on this question as well, but the gap is sufficiently narrow (38 per cent for Clark to Farnworth’s 32 per cent) to suggest it would be a competitive contest between the two.

Farnworth leads among general voters, NDP voters and even B.C. Liberal voters on every question. That’s why a number of B.C. Liberals have told reporters they are most worried about a potential victory by him on April 17, and why they are rubbing

their hands with relish at the prospect of a Dix win.

Of course, all polls are simply snapshots of public opinion. That opinion can swiftly change.

Farnworth’s personal popularity, for example, could sour with people once more scrutiny is paid to his leadership and his party’s positions.

The NDP leadership race has received scant media attention, which means no bad publicity has come their way.

And a Dix victory may indeed fire up the party faithful and motivate more voters on the left to come out and vote in numbers not seen previously.

Finally, one must consider the move of long-time federal Conservative MP John Cummins to provincial politics.

If he breathes life into the moribund B.C. Conservative party, he may take enough votes away from the B.C. Liberals to allow the NDP to win enough seats to form government even if its popular vote shrinks.

A similar outcome occurred in the 1996 election, when Glen Clark won power with fewer votes than the B.C. Liberals because the B.C. Reform party took almost 10 per cent of the votes.

And who was a key member of Clark’s strategy team? Why, Adrian Dix of course.

There’s a fine art in not being disgusting IN celebration of the arrival of spring, this column is about wooing.

Or rather, a specific aspect of wooing: not making the opposite sex want to throw up.

Speaking from experience, I can tell you this is not always as easy as it sounds.

A number of female friends of mine would no doubt argue that I’m not entirely qualified to give pointers on this issue — or any issue related to romance, for that matter — in the same way a dog is not entirely qualified to give pointers on seeing colour. But to them I would counter as follows: This is my column. Stuff it.

To make my point, I have to tell you a story, set some years ago on an occasion when I found myself abruptly back in the dating pool. How and why I came to be single, I can’t fathom. Those same friends have ventured theories, of course: “You don’t ever listen, blah, blah, blah,” for example.

That may not be the exact quote.

Anyway, on the advice of an acquaintance, I decided to remedy this in an extremely futuristic way: via the Internet.

As many of you may be aware, computers exist. And they’re used by increasingly nonweird, socially adept, hygienic individuals who interact at least occasionally with the living to meet people.

This approach to the world of dating has its obvious upside.

Unlike the real world, a lot of unnecessary and ultimately fruitless interactions can be avoided by simply clicking the right boxes in your search criteria, such as “single female,” “easily impressed,” “does not habitually end relationship with murder” and so on.

It’s quick, efficient, and unlike — unfortunately — faceto-face conversations, there’s a backspace.

The down side to the online approach is that everybody lies, or at least I do.

When you’re writing your profile, the temptation is to exaggerate — and I mean exaggerate in the sense of completely fabricate — things to make yourself look better.

Everything from your taste in movies to your respect for vegetarianism to whether or not you quietly suspect

the right-hand end of your couch is haunted is ripe for misrepresentation.

This is fine, of course, until you get to the meeting-inperson part, at which point some of the more questionable claims start to become apparent.

Your date may begin to suspect, for instance, that you don’t kayak professionally. Or that you play a smaller role at the United Nations than you may have implied.

So right from the word go, you’re climbing out of a hole, and your efforts to lure the other person into the mistaken belief that you are a mature, agreeable man who has skills beyond being able to breath independently will be challenging to say the least.

On the occasion in question, from which the dating tip at the centre of this column arises, this process was actually going pretty well. I had succeeded in dressing relatively normally. I was using my cutlery at the right end. And I had managed to avoid most of the classic conversational pitfalls: religion, politics, what happens to food after you eat it, your date’s passing resemblance to Rod Stewart.

But then, after about 40 minutes or so, things slowly, gradually started to tank.

Having told every socially acceptable anecdote I could think of, I started fabricating

things to fill air time (“. . . and that’s how the carrot was invented.”).

Then, alarmingly, it just came to a stop. My feeling of relaxed confidence was replaced by a sensation akin to thousands of invisible shrimp crawling up one’s face.

And here, finally, is where I come to my very specific piece of wooing advice: No matter how badly the conversation is going on a date, no matter how

much you think it could be reinvigorated by a humorous anecdote, never, ever, tell the chili joke.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this particular piece of humour, here it is, censored for publication: A man walks into a diner (a series of increasingly disgusting events) . . . and the other guys says: “Yeah, that’s how far I got.”

But some quick follow-up revealed both of the woman’s grandsons were fine and not in need of assistance.

The person who had called and almost made off with the woman’s money was actually a scammer, using a common ruse to dupe elderly victims into draining their bank accounts.

Police said in previous cases, scammers have contacted victims by phone, often preying on people who seem to be confused, pretending to be a grandchild or other relative who needs money to get out of jail to or to pay for damages after an accident. The scammer often pleads with the “grandparent” not to tell anyone and promises to repay the money, before getting the victim to send between $5,000 and $10,000 to another province by wire transfer. Sometimes, a second scammer even poses as a lawyer over the phone to add credibility to the claim.

Police believe the scam is being run by a group in eastern Canada who may be getting personal information through Internet searches.

Police warn anyone who gets a call like this to call a family member who can help verify information, even if the caller says help is required immediately.

If the “grandchild” says they are in jail, find out which jail and then call to check, police said. Ask for a phone number to call back.

Finally, always be wary of requests to wire transfer money — often scams are involved.

DESPITE the fact that theatre has always been part of my life, there are times when going to see a production is just one more chore in a busy week.

And then there are the weeks that the rewards are so fulfilling or so thought-provoking, that the time spent cannot be quantified.

I did not see the 2009 production of this show that garnered rave reviews, so it was all new to me Tuesday night. Quite simply, the Ruby Slippers production of A Beautiful View at Presentation House is magic. Its short 75 minutes illuminate the lives of two women and their relationship so completely, there is no other word.

It helps that playwright Daniel MacIvor is directing his own work that, as part of a collection of plays titled I Still Love You, won the 2006 Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama.

There is an over-arching construct to the beginning and end of the play that allows the characters to see and talk to the audience directly.

It seemed obvious to me, but others tell me they did not initially understand what was happening until the end of the play. Almost everyone takes See Playwright page 18

the action literally, but it is equally interesting to consider the bear as a metaphor for fear.

I know I am being cryptic, but I’m trying not be a spoiler.

Diane Brown and Colleen Wheeler play Mitch and Linda, who meet in a sporting goods store. Mitch’s motor mouth paints her into a corner with a small lie, or “wishful thinking.” But her basic good nature has her tracking Linda down at her job at the airport to ensure no one is hurt by what she previously said. Linda’s somewhat cynical practicality initially classifies Mitch’s approach as “lesbian.”

And indeed a night of drinking and talking (but, ultimately, being) leads to them sleeping together.

However, the rest of their decades-long journey through friendship and betrayal is not defined by sexuality — in fact their often humorous connection is more generally defined by what it is not than what it is. MacIvor may eschew labels, but his writing still rings true. When Linda asks Mitch “What are you so afraid of?” and Mitch deflects instead of answering directly, I wanted to shake her. That’s a tribute to both MacIvor’s accurate observation of human foibles and how well Brown and Wheeler play off each other.

My limited space and poor words don’t do this production justice. You have three remaining chances to see the show. Don’t miss it.

JILL Barber continues to evolve as a musician on her new album Mischievous Moon. She performs with her band at the Vogue Theatre May 18.

“Every time I write a song I aspire to write the way the best songs ever written were,” she says. “I’ve never been very good or had the knack for writing the next pop hit or the next sensation.”

Instead, the Vancouver-based singer/ songwriter feels it’s important to look back on the works that have proved timeless, those produced by artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday or Frank Sinatra, and consider why they’ve endured.

“There’s a kind of an intangible quality that I’m always searching for in my own writing to try to give these songs a life span,” she says.

On Tuesday, Barber released her fourth album, Mischievous Moon, and she has since headed off on a Canadian tour that will bring her to Vancouver’s Vogue Theatre May 18.

Having lived extensively across Canada — originally from Port Credit, Ont., she’s also called Kingston, Ont., and Halifax, N.S. home prior to settling in the Lower Mainland in recent years — Barber is in the unique position of being claimed by both coasts as well as her native province.

“What I’m going for is the title: ‘Canada’s sweetheart,’” she laughs. “I really feel at this point at home in this country and I’ve certainly travelled back and forth across it many times. I’m a really proud Canadian and I love that I have this kind of pan-Canadian experience as a musician.”

Barber’s last album, 2008’s Chances, was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize and received two East Coast Music Awards. The record featured collaborations with Barber’s longtime producer Les Cooper as well as acclaimed Canadian artist Ron Sexsmith.

Chances represented a departure from Barber’s earlier, self-described “folkie-organic” projects, a path she’s continued on with Mischievous Moon.

“As I’ve grown and changed as an artist I think I would say I’ve expanded my musical palate a little bit and incorporated other musicians and other musical textures and kind of dressed up what I do as a songwriter,” she says. “That has really allowed me to take my music to a totally whole different level that I wouldn’t have imagined when I first started out.”

As she did for Chances, Barber wrote the songs for Mischievous Moon during an artist residency at the Banff Centre, later recording it in Toronto, the home base of both her band and Cooper, who returned as producer.

While the album is in the same vein as Chances, incorporating lush orchestral sounds, cinematically speaking it’s more vast in terms of the arrangements presented. As well, her strong belief in the importance of continuing to grow and evolve as a musician is evident.

“As an artist, the temptation to get really comfortable in one genre and stay there with your fans is great, but I think it’s important to push a little bit beyond what’s totally comfortable and actually stretch a little bit, to try to reach new heights musically,” she says.

Having built a strong French Canadian audience, Mischievous Moon is representative of Barber’s newfound interest in recording and performing songs in French, featuring French and English versions of one song, “Dis-Moi”/ “Tell Me.” “As a musician and as a performer, my job is to communicate effectively with my audience, so this language barrier was really getting me down,” she says.

To build on her limited knowledge of French ingrained as a child, Barber took drastic measures and enrolled in a month-long intensive program offered in the south of France. She’ll put her new language skills to the test at a number of upcoming Quebec tour dates.

No matter what language Barber sings in, love is a common theme addressed.

“I feel my art kind of reflects my life,” she says. “It just feels like love is what it’s all about in life. I feel like if I have any job as a musician, if I’ve found my calling as an artist, it’s somehow to continue writing a soundtrack for romance and love. I just think it’s something the world needs more of. So I’ve been taking it upon myself to try and contribute to that.”

Barber’s own love life has been cast in the public spotlight, following her recent marriage to CBC Radio personality Grant Lawrence.

The West Vancouver native, whose parents still call Dundarave home, often discusses their relationship on air, either on his daily show or weekly podcast.

“It was definitely what made me fall in love with him, was his great storytelling ability,” says Barber. “So now that I’m in the stories, it’s something I’ve come to accept.”

However, she and her husband aren’t so different, seeing both put an immense amount of themselves and their hearts into their work, taking a personal approach to broadcasting See Barber page 20

Sewing newbie gets crafty Tessa Holloway

EVER since I can remember, my mother has been trying to get me to sew. But I never wanted any of it.

She knows all the tricks.

She’d lure me downstairs to her sewing room with something else, then change the subject to which fabric would work best in her quilt.

Sometimes she would offer me inducements, which I’m guessing she figured would work since it proved so effective on the dog.

I usually stumbled through it by pointing at a few fabrics at random, saying “looks nice” a few times and replying “stuff” to any question that the word could be seen as a reasonable answer.

So imagine her surprise when I showed up with my Christmas wish list late last year and smack-dab in the middle of it was fabric and some help sewing a shirt.

After checking my vital signs and assuring herself that I hadn’t been replaced by my

secret, evil estranged twin (as a Gemini, I’m convinced this is going to happen any minute), she was in mom heaven.

Only problem: you don’t exactly get to be an expert sewer by ignoring everything your mother tries to teach you about the craft, and I had chosen for my first attempt a rather complicated design — one with techniques my mom hadn’t even tried.

The tunic-like shirt drapes into folds on one side, made basically by giving the body of the shirt a slightly L-shaped look with a chunk sticking out to my right. OK, that’s easy enough.

What wasn’t such a cinch was the collar, which I had to fold over itself several times through the sewing as I’m stretching one side of the fabric slightly.

Maybe I should have tried making tea cloths first.

So what drove me to learn? I could have just bought something in a store for much less hassle, and the total cost was more than most of my store-bought wardrobe — $40 for the pattern and about $14 for the fabric (two

metres of a lush turquoise double-knit at half-price, as we bought some extra in case of mistakes). I’ll have to make a few extra before the costs look truly advantageous.

But I’ve always had trouble finding clothes that fit my lanky frame and didn’t make me look like a few twigs held together with yarn.

The handy thing about making something yourself is it can look like whatever you want.

The pattern we chose gave us three options to play with, each slightly different, and we combined two of them and tweaked it here and there as I pleased.

Secondly, store-bought clothes, while certainly sewn with more skill than me, just aren’t as special. Sure, the ends of the sleeves will line up flush (oops) and you’ll never see puckering along a stitch (yikes), but those are all memories that, oddly enough, make me like it even more.

And by the time I finished, I had gained a lot of skills.

percolating, though not quite as far back as Lochhead’s first effort, a re-write of The Three Little Pigs featuring cats. The childhood collaboration with his mom was “pretty dark and messed up,” he admits.

Certain that he wanted to do something creative, Lochhead continued writing short stories at Argyle secondary, but “never really shared” his creative bent with the guys on his Kitsilano football team, for obvious reasons.

He went to university, planning to study law or criminology, with an aim to write on the side, when “halfway through I said ‘what the hell am I doing? I want to write.’ ” He fled overseas, criss-crossing through Turkey, Eastern Europe and the Nordic countries. “That trip was the backbone for what Hanna would originally become,” Lochhead says.

Lochhead wrote the screenplay for Hanna just before finishing up at Vancouver Film School, then spent the next year sending out some 300 emails to agents, two of whom replied with non form-letter responses, before someone bit. From there, “it caught fire,” says Lochhead.

FOR a short while, Tara Johns considered trying exactly what the protagonist in her new film, The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom, does in order to get the attention of the country music idol so prominently featured in the story.

At the time, the West Vancouver high school grad had written a script she loved and had funding in line for her first feature film.

In the film, 11-yearold Elizabeth Gray, after discovering she’s adopted, decides her real mother must be Parton, and sets out on her banana-seat bicycle from Manitoba to Minneapolis for a concert in hopes of reuniting See Classic page 28

But there was just one catch: Johns had sent the script to Parton for approval, but she hadn’t heard back, and now Parton was going on tour.

She thought she’d missed her window.

Thankfully, John’s trip to crash the show in Jacksonville, Miss. never quite materialized by the time the fax came into producer Barbara Shrier’s Montreal office. Not only did Parton love the script, she gave permission to use her music virtually for free and lent her voice for a cameo just before the closing credits.

“Everything you hear about her is true,” says the Montrealbased writer of recording the voiceover with Parton. “She just wanted to please me and it was really amazing and it was great. Unlike the film’s protagonist, Johns wasn’t a she blazed a trail for so many female artists in what was a very Parton fan growing up, but thought of revolving the film around patriarchal industry.”

From that starting point, she threw in a few ideas from her life: “It was the first time I think I ever really listened very closely from her desire to “be something special” growing up — a desire to what Dolly Parton had to say,” says Johns. “I really discovered who she was underneath for the first time and I was blown away: expressed by Elizabeth in the film — as well as her discovery that What an incredible woman she was, and how in the ’60s and ’70s Joni Mitchell not only attended high school in Saskatoon with

Johns’ own mom, but that Mitchell had a baby who was put up for adoption the same year as she was born.

“I kind of fantasized maybe Joni and my mom had been friends and that Joni had given her baby girl to my mom to raise,” she says.

With a premise as far out as this, it’s easy to get the wrong impression that the movie is flighty. That’s not the idea, said Johns.

It’s a focus on the hardships of growing from a child to something much more uncertain, and how Elizabeth’s relationship with the mother she’s stuck with, and who is totally unprepared to deal with all the questions an adopted pre-teen daughter asks, and how she can survive all the rebelliousness and anger of learning the truth.

It’s a coming of age story “not just for Elizabeth but also for her mom,” says Johns. “It struck me so often that in these coming of age stories, the parents are kind of shadowy in the whole telling of the story. We don’t really get to see how that life change that their kids are going through, which is necessarily rebellious and probably hurtful, we never really see how it impacts them as much, as I feel it probably does in life. So I wanted to explore that.”

For her part, first-time actor Julia Stone from Vancouver captures an innocence lost in Elizabeth in a way that was difficult to find, says Johns. Yet Stone came with almost no film experience and didn’t make it past the first round of a fruitless nation-wide casting call. In the end, it was a last-ditch message on their Facebook page that turned up Stone.

“We took a chance,” she says. But after 10 minutes of spending time with the girl, she was certain. “She doesn’t have the experience but she’s got something that’s even better, and it is a gift.”

Parton’s voice provides the setting for the film as much as the rural Manitoba town, as her classic songs are strung along throughout the piece alongside covers by Canadians Martha Wainwright, Coral Egan, Nelly Furtado and the Wailin’ Jennys.

In the end, the movie is full of the folksy charm that Parton is known for, but it’s also a tribute to Parton’s non-musical story: her determination, her outspokenness and in particular how she inspired those qualities in her legions of fans.

The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom opens today for a limited showing at International Village Cinemas at 88 West Pender St. in Vancouver.

HENSHAW - Dennis RCAF veteran Dennis Frederick Henshaw passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital March 28th in his 89th year. He is survived by his wife Ellen, brother Gordon, children David (Gail), Diane, Vicki (Bill), four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Lyla and five brothers. While in the service he was involved with Search and Rescue and taught instrument and electrical techs at CFB Borden. After his retirement from the RCAF he became a projectionist and served as union business agent. He also farmed and was a volunteer firefighter on South Pender Island. No service by request.

SUMMERFIELD, Morva July 31, 1916 - March 30, 2011 (nee Batchelor), passed away peacefully at the age of 94 with family by her side in West Vancouver on Wednesday, March 30, 2011. She was predeceased by her husband Rolly and siblings Edith, Verna & Jack and her niece Bette. She will be dearly missed by her children Jeanne Butler & Joe Summerfield and wife Lynn; Grandchildren Cheryl (Ron) and Jeanette (Lee); Great Grandchildren Nathan, Hayley & Morgan and her nieces Morva and Bonnie and their families and her dear friend Betty Fulton. She will be remembered by her family & friends for her strength, courage and quiet confidence.

Morva was born in England and was a long time resident of West Vancouver. Affectionately known as Maurie to many, her home was always open for family dinners at Easter and Christmas. Her beach side cabin at Granthams Landing was a gathering place for family and friends and for many years she was a regular summer resident.

In honour of Morva’s life a Service of Celebration will be held at St. Christopher’s Anglican Church, 1068 Inglewood Avenue, West Vancouver on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 2:00pm. Reception in the church hall to follow.

IT’S hard to believe that the Porsche Cayenne has been around for eight years because it just doesn’t feel like it’s been that long.

But over the years, the Cayenne has built up a reputation as the “sportiest” of the sport utility vehicles.

When the Cayenne debuted way back in 2002, auto enthusiasts were polarized.

Some loved it, applauding the automaker’s efforts to diversify and broaden its appeal, while purists felt that no Porsche should have more than two doors. Others didn’t mind the idea of a Porsche SUV, but criticized the Cayenne for sharing a platform with the Volkswagen Touareg — a move that reduced costs, but diluted the final product. A Porsche SUV was a fine idea in their minds, but this one was too much of an SUV and not enough of a Porsche.

Despite the varying public opinion, the Cayenne has done well for itself, becoming Porsche’s top-selling vehicle in North America. It’s not the most practical SUV on the road, but it is the most practical Porsche, and that’s a key selling feature for fans of the brand who can’t justify a Boxster or 911.

Redesigned for 2011, the second-generation Cayenne addresses virtually all of the criticisms levelled against the original model, beginning with the styling. Gone is the odd, half-coupe, half-SUV exterior, replaced with a design that does far more justice to Porsche’s tradition and character.

With respect to what’s underneath, some people will be disappointed to learn that the chassis is still shared with the Touareg. However,

The Cayenne’s practicality has also increased, but it’s not ever going to be the most family-oriented SUV, and that’s the point.

Unlike its indecisive predecessor, the 2011 Cayenne knows exactly what it’s supposed to be: a Porsche first

and an SUV second.

Design Although it’s slightly bigger than before, the Cayenne’s redesigned exterior is sleeker and smoother, giving the impression of a smaller vehicle. It’s more muscular and athletic, fitting in with its sports car siblings in a way that the original version never did.

The sharp hood creases and sculpted headlamps look fantastic and tie the Cayenne closely to the Panamera, essentially creating a shared design language for Porsche’s four-door vehicles. However, Porsche hasn’t quite figured

out the rear end on either vehicle, leaving something to be desired when viewed from behind.

Inside, the Cayenne puts its own spin on the Panamera’s excellent dashboard, with a layout that arrays many of the buttons and switches on a rising console around the shifter, with grab handles on both the doors and console.

The overall effect is quite striking.

Performance Depending on the model, the Cayenne comes with a 3.6-litre V6 producing 300 horsepower and 295 foot-

pounds of torque, a 4.8-litre V8 with 400 h.p. and 369 foot-pounds of torque, a hybrid drivetrain with 380 h.p. and 428 foot-pounds of torque, or a turbocharged 4.8-litre V8 generating 500 h.p. and 516 foot-pounds of torque, Porsche’s first hybrid vehicle combines a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 with an electric motor to offer more power and better fuel efficiency than the base 3.6-litre V6.

The 47 h.p. motor is strong enough to propel the Cayenne up to 60 km/h.

Cayenne’s display strikes a good balance From page 41 Every Cayenne — not just the hybrid — features the automatic start stop system first seen on the Panamera, which cuts the engine when the vehicle is stopped to save gas. The SUV is also 180 kilograms lighter than before, improving both efficiency and handling.

Steering is solid and heavy, offering great road feedback and quick response. Despite continuing to share its chassis with the Touareg, the Cayenne’s handling and ride quality are more distinctly Porsche-like.

With performance features such as an active all-wheel drive system that primarily drives the rear wheels (pushing power to the front as needed), dynamic chassis control, torque vectoring plus and an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, the Cayenne boasts some impressive technology.

Environment A bigger wheelbase and better packaging result in an interior that feels much bigger, though the Cayenne won’t win any medals in this regard. Still, the redesigned SUV has sufficient storage space for most purposes, and gains sliding/reclining rear seats for added passenger comfort and enhanced cargo versatility.

The many controls surrounding the shifter

may seem a bit daunting at first, but fall easily to hand without requiring too long of a glance away from the road. The only issues are the buttons set directly in front of the shifter, which can be hard to reach at times.

The traditional, five-gauge instrument cluster includes a 4.8-inch, circular LCD screen that provides quick access to the stereo, vehicle settings and navigation system. Some manufacturers get carried away, creating displays that can overwhelm and distract drivers, but the Cayenne strikes a good balance.

Headlamps that swivel in corners and selflevel on inclines are becoming standard fare in luxury vehicles, so Porsche has introduced a new twist with its dynamic lighting system: speedsensitive lights with separate settings for roads and highways. The value is debatable, but it’s certainly an interesting idea.

Features The Cayenne sells for $55,300 to $118,700 in base, S, S Hybrid, and Turbo trim levels, stepping up considerably with each trim level.

Fuel efficiency for the base V6 with the Tiptronic S transmission is rated at 13.2 litres/100 kilometres in the city and 8.0 l/100 km on the highway. The hybrid model is rated at 8.7 l/100 km and 7.9 l/100 km, respectively.

Competitors ■ BMW X5 The $59,990 X5 comes with a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 with 300 h.p. and 300 foot-pounds of torque, a 4.4-litre V8 with 400 h.p. and 450 foot-pounds of torque, or a 3.0-litre V6 pushing 265 h.p. and 425 foot-pounds of torque. Its xDrive all-wheel drive is standard and the gas engines get an eight-speed automatic but the diesel is limited to a six-speed transmission.

Although it was introduced just three years ahead of the Cayenne, it feels like the X5 has been around much longer. Staying true to BMW’s philosophy, it has become one of the automaker’s most important vehicles.

■ Infiniti FX The FX sells for $53,250, powered by a 3.5-litre V6 with 303 h.p. and 262 foot-pounds of torque or a 5.0-litre V8 with 390 h.p. and 369 foot-pounds of torque, and featuring a slick seven-speed automatic.

Though Infiniti doesn’t have Porsche’s reputation, the sporty FX holds its own against the Cayenne, with stunning good looks and a similar allwheel-drive system that spends most of its time sending power to the rear wheels.

■ Mercedes ML-Class The ML-Class starts at $57,400, equipped with one of four engines: a 3.5-litre

V6 generating 268 h.p. and 258 foot-pounds of torque, a 3.0-litre diesel with 210 h.p. and 400 foot-pounds of torque, a 5.5-litre V8 with 382 h.p. and 391 foot-pounds of torque, or a 6.2-litre V8 with 503 h.p. and 465 foot-pounds of torque. Its 4Matic allwheel drive is standard, along with a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Released in 2005 and updated in 2009, the ML-Class is one of the oldest luxury SUVs on the road, but still holds its own against newer models. A major redesign is coming up for the 2012 model year.
