THE owners of Park Royal are weighing a major redevelopment of the mall’s south side that could include new apartment blocks.

An executive at the West Vancouver shopping centre confirmed Monday that his company has hired an architectural firm to draw up plans that envision the return of movie theatres to the site, the expansion of retail space — likely in a similar vein to the outdoor Village at Park Royal — and the potential addition of multi-family dwellings.

“We’ve engaged Dialog (a design and engineering firm) to take a look at opportunities we may have to add some different elements here,” said Park Royal vice-president Rick Amantea in an interview with the North Shore News. “We continue to tinker around with Park Royal to see if and how we can create more of a mixed-use environment.”

Mall hopes to make plans public in April From page 1

— Amantea did not rule out the possibility.

“There is certainly precedent all around us,” he said. “The (complexes to the east) are 20 and 22 storeys high, I believe. Park Royal (Towers) to the west of us are probably 20 storeys high.”

The mall will be approaching the Squamish Nation and District of West Vancouver in the near future with a preliminary plan, said Amantea. The majority of Park Royal’s south mall lies on Squamish land, but a small sliver falls within the municipal boundary.

“Depending on the reaction we get from both of those groups, we believe that some time in April we will be engaging the public in a full information kind of program. At that point in time, we’ll share with them all of the plans we have currently on the table.”

The news comes as the community grapples with other proposed apartment blocks in the Ambleside area, including plans for a tower on the Safeway site at Marine Drive and 17th Street and a tentative plan for a multi-family complex at Marine Drive and 13th Street.

While some of the proposed changes at Park Royal will likely involve tearing down and “regenerating” existing stores, the majority of the work will focus on “underperforming space” — areas that aren’t used for retail, such as parking lots, said Amantea.

Larco Investments, which owns Park Royal, has already done something similar at its Morgan Crossing site in south Surrey, he noted, where it put three storeys of residential space — a total of more than 450 units — on top of an outdoor shopping complex akin to the Village.

Creating a mixed-use complex at the site makes sense, said Amantea. There is adequate water, sewage and electrical infrastructure in the area to support it, and the ready proximity of transit and retail to the new residences would help reduce its impact on traffic over nearby Lions Gate Bridge.

Park Royal drew some criticism last year when it floated a proposal to remove a pedestrian overpass and a vehicle overpass that connect the two halves of the mall across Marine Drive and replace them with an at-grade intersection — a change council eventually approved.

Amantea acknowledged that his company’s support for that move was related to the larger plans under discussion here, and that it had made that fact clear to the district. “It was submitted to West Vancouver at the time when we talked about the intersection,” he said. “We also referred in our traffic analysis to the accommodation of future residential (and commercial).”

Some of the new retail space will likely be taken up by large American chains that are looking to expand their presence in Canada, said Amantea. “Apple, Sephora, Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel, all of those people are looking at the Vancouver market right now,” he said. “We have to see if there’s a means and way to perhaps accommodate them.”

The movie theatres are intended to meet a demand that has existed in the community since Park Royal Cinemas closed more than 10 years ago, he added.

Amantea emphasized, however, that all the plans are far from final. “Some of them are just really massing plans,” he said. “Some of them will have other ideas incorporated into them; some of them may even have some elevations. . . . But nothing, certainly, is set in stone.”

BLUE bags and yellow bags are common recycling fare, but what about red bags?

A North Vancouver company is looking to provide residents with another option for recycling goods, such as Styrofoam, some plastics and gable-top milk, soy and soup containers, which don’t fit in the curbside pick-up options.

Their alternative is a red bag slightly larger than the average garbage bag, which can be filled with those goods and then brought to the company’s North Vancouver warehouse.

The fee is $6, payable when the bag is picked up by the customer.

“It’s really had a good response, especially from the citizens of the North Shore,” said George Jasper, operating manager at WCS Recycling, which runs the service. “Our goal is to have on average 100 people here on Saturday, and at this point after two

months we’re already up to 30 people on average.”

The program launched on Boxing Day with a fundraiser for the Harvest Food Project, which aside from diverting a whole lot of waste from the landfill also raised $550 for the organization.

Since then, they’ve opened their doors to the public every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., while during the week they continue with the commercial recycling business they have operated for 10 years.

Jasper said they are looking to recycle all the products locally, and while they have found buyers for the higher-grade Styrofoam and plastics, some of the products have been difficult.

“We want as much as possible to see that these materials are re-used and recycled locally and not sent overseas,” he said, which is where most blue-box recyclables end up.

Jasper is challenging North Shore residents to voluntarily cut their garbage pick-up from once a week to once every two weeks.

“I would say what we’d like to achieve would be . . . to offer the North Shore residents an opportunity to increase their recycling rate and to reduce the amount of garbage they’re throwing out,” he said.

THE skyline of Park Royal could change dramatically if the shopping centre pursues plans to add residential units above new additions to the south mall.

Council asked staff on Monday night to investigate the possibility of installing park facilities, such as a spray park for kids or a covered ice rink for the winter, along with retail and a potential Capilano University site, to enliven the current dead space around Shipbuilders’ Plaza.

“I think that would be a massive attraction to skate on the waterfront looking at downtown Vancouver,” said Coun. Craig Keating as he brought forward the motion.

The site had been set aside for the now-defunct National Maritime Centre, a $70 million project that had been planned as the anchor tenant of the waterfront. The project was sunk, however, when the provincial government reneged on two throne speech commitments

to provide $30 million in funding for the project.

Mayor Darrell Mussatto said the city needs to go it alone in developing the site and make something that people in the neighbourhood can enjoy for cheap. “We’re putting a lot of people down in Lower Lonsdale and I think we need to have enough space for them,” said Mussatto. “If we’re holding out for the federal government, we’re going to be waiting a long time.

“It’s done. It’s not going to happen. Let’s be realistic.”

Some councillors, however, weren’t willing to give up hope for a larger attraction.

“I’m completely underwhelmed by what’s being thought of here,” said Coun. Bob Fernley, who voted against the motion along with Couns. Pam Bookham and Rod Clark. “We just have to be patient, folks.”

Bookham said the city shouldn’t just pull ideas out of the air without talking to the public.

“This is one councillor’s vision, but what about the community vision?” she asked. “I don’t think we should be quick to limit the See Cap page 5

REGULAR foot patrols by police in Lower Lonsdale helped reduce calls to police by 17 per cent, the North Vancouver RCMP are reporting.

The figure is included in a report to council on the results of the Lonsdale Corridor Crime Response, which put uniformed police officers on the street following public concern about crime in the Lower Lonsdale area around 2009.

“In this case, traditional policing — being out in the area — made a difference,” Insp. Chris Kennedy told City of North Vancouver council as he also requested more funds to continue the program.

“We actually reduced calls for service.”

The pilot project studied where the most crime was taking place and during what times, then assigned dedicated officers to patrol the area on foot and talk to people, usually ending at midnight. Even when a more important call came in, those officers weren’t pulled off the job, which helped make the program more effective, said Kennedy.

As well, the patrol officers helped reduce the fear and perception of crime, said Kennedy, which makes the area more welcoming.

At the same time, police broke down the Lower Londsale area into 40 sub-areas and measured crime and calls for service in each, with concentrations tending to exist around Esplanade and Rogers, Keith Road and Lonsdale and Third Street and Chesterfield.

Measured midway through the pilot project, the spikes became less intense, said Kennedy, but some crime also migrated to other areas, in particular closer to Mahon Avenue, to avoid the uniformed presence.

When the pilot program wrapped up this fall, the crime statistics rebounded somewhat, showing the program needs to be continued, he said.

And that’s what brought Kennedy and Supt. Tonya Enger to council on Monday, to secure $175,000 in funds set aside in last year’s budget to continue the project from April 1 to Sept. 30.

They had no complaints from councillors, who questioned them on some specifics but also praised the work.

When asked by Coun. Mary Trentadue about whether this could serve as a template for programs elsewhere in the city, Kennedy said that was a possibility, especially since the project included a detailed level of statistical analysis that hadn’t been done in the city up until that point.

“We have a far better handle on where our problems are,” said Kennedy.

In the end, the vote barely passed, with Coun. Guy Heywood voting in favour only after the wording was

changed slightly to include more public consultation and staff considerations of how any proposals will strengthen businesses in the area.

Capilano University was also mentioned as a possible tenant as part of the motion.

Spokeswoman Shelley Kean said the university will make a presentation on its vision for the space later this month. “At this point it’s a bit premature for us to say what we would like to do

The information came from inspection reports provided to the Vancouver Sun in response to a Freedom on Information request last fall. In several cases the ratings provided at that time no longer reflect the most recent assessments.

Back to Basics Daycare, rated in June 2009 as having a high number of potential problems, has had a moderate rating since April 2010.

Forest Hill Daycare, previously given a high rating because of insufficient information, is now rated as having a low rating for potential problems.

Petite Hands, previously given a high rating, has had a low rating since October.

Sherry’s Family Daycare, given a high rating in July 2010, has been rated moderate since January.

Great Beginnings and Yoet Yoes daycares continue to receive high ratings.

One of those victims, a 20-year-old woman from Port Coquitlam, died at the scene. The others, one from Coquitlam and another from Delta, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Collision analysts are still investigating the crash, but already the RCMP have said they expect to lay charges against the driver, whose licence had been suspended.

It’s not clear yet what caused the accident. Police say they will be looking at speed, road conditions, alcohol and other possible contributing factors in their investigation.

The RCMP have not released the identities of those involved, and have not said whether they are students at the university.

A 22-year-old West Vancouver man was killed very close to the scene in November last year when his vehicle crossed the centre line on Gaglardi Way and crashed head-on into an SUV. At the time, investigators said speed and driver distraction likely contributed to that collision.

AVID Hahn’s tenure as CEO of B.C. Ferries has never been smooth sailing, but the man has sailed into uncharted waters lashed by gale-force complaints with the news that his corporation has seized nearly $1.2 million of his customer’s cash in a shakedown that is said to be above board.

Legal or not, the ethics in play here remind one of the British government licensing 17th century pirates to commit high-seas robbery.

It’s no secret that Hahn and his board never liked assured loading tickets.

Different to reservations, these tickets were sold in books of 10 at about twice the price of regular tickets. The pricey premium guaranteed the holder could breeze by lineups anytime, including the busiest holidays of the year, and

created a headache for terminal staff who could not predict usage.

Hahn tried to eliminate the tickets in 2003, but backed down in the wake of public protests.

Then last year, the corporation announced it would begin enforcing the two-year expiration date on the tickets.

There was no public advertisement of the change in policy. The announcement was sent out by email to those customers who had registered and was posted inside terminals — the very places the ticket holders wanted to avoid.

In six months last year, the corporation cancelled almost 16,000 tickets and pocketed the money.

That’s piracy in our book. And if Hahn is not going to reconsider his decision, our provincial government should make him.

Gambling is a sure bet for governments

THE debate over whether or not a giant casino should be built in downtown Vancouver has shone a bright light on a political reality that some people simply won’t accept.

The fact is, governments at all levels have become so heavily dependent on gambling revenues that they now comprise the cornerstone of budgets and therefore are directly linked to all kinds of public services, from health care to education to capital projects.

There are currently 17 casinos in Metro Vancouver, with almost 500 gaming tables and 10,000 slot machines.

They generate a lot of money.

The provincial government collects more than $1 billion annually from the B.C. Lottery Corporation, which oversees gambling (including

lotteries) in the province.

About 20 per cent of that money over three years is earmarked for distribution to non-profit organizations and charities (one can certainly argue that the amount should be greater), and a smaller amount is put in a healthcare spending account.

The proposed casino attached to the new BC Place would be three times the size of the existing Edgewater casino nearby.

It would house 1,500 slot machines, 150 gaming tables and employ approximately

2,000 people full time.

As many as 6,000 people are expected to visit the facility every day of the week, generating more than a half billion dollars annually in economic activity.

Opponents of the casino claim it would be a stain on the neighbourhood (home to BC Place and Rogers Arena, which aren’t exactly calm, quiet places) and would attract criminal behaviour, including money laundering and gang activity. Plus, it would be a noisy addendum to a sporting facility and would send all the wrong kinds of signals to young people attending a BC Lions or Vancouver Whitecaps game.

Unfortunately for the opponents, however, is the fact that governments make the decision on whether or not casinos are established, and because the amount of money to be gained from their creation is so enormous and consistent, it’s almost impossible to say no.

Municipal governments

love having casinos within their borders, as they get a big slice of the revenue pie as well.

The municipalities that have casinos get tens of millions of dollars in return, and that funds all kinds of projects and services that might not exist otherwise.

In fact, gaming has become so big in this province that without it, the provincial and municipal governments would undoubtedly raise taxes — income and/or property — or cut services, or both.

That, combined with the realization that gaming revenues have a positive impact on everything from Little League baseball to parent advisory councils to arts groups, is a big reason why opposition to gaming has gradually diminished over the years.

Those who insist on painting gambling as some sort of social evil that will ruin the youth of society are missing the larger point: It is an industry that is here to

stay, and will undoubtedly grow as governments use it as a convenient crutch to help ward off boosting taxes or cutting services.

Frankly, as someone who will probably never visit the proposed new casino, I’d rather see the casino patrons spend their own money to help pay for healthcare, sports teams and arts groups, rather than having the government reach into my pocketbook even further than they do right now.

The furor within the NDP over its insistence that leadership candidates hand over their passwords to social media forums such as Facebook and Twitter may be resolved by the time you read this, but nevertheless, the party has demonstrated its unerring ability to shoot itself in the foot.

One candidate, Nicholas Simons, has balked at disclosing his passwords, arguing that not only would

his privacy be violated, but so too would be the privacy of individuals he has communicated with on those social media sites.

Simons is not an unknown commodity. He has been vetted already by the party’s candidate screening policy, and he has been elected twice. He represents the party as an MLA, and is delegated to perform various duties on behalf of the party.

As a duly elected MLA, one presumes the party already has a fair degree of trust in him.

As well, parliamentary convention dictates that all MLAs are to be presumed “honourable members” of the legislature.

So why doesn’t the NDP treat him as such, and presume him to be an “honourable member”?

Violating his privacy would seem to run counter to that.

Not going the extra mile, um, kilometre SOME time early this year, I quit jogging.

I know. This already sounds like a good story. But before I get into the exciting details of how I came to exercise slightly less, a quick history of my BMI: At about the age of five, after having spent my early years as a more or less normally proportioned human, I started a growth spurt that took me from roughly three feet in height to six feet in height (for those more familiar with metric, that’s about a kilometre) over the course of eight years (three weeks in metric) without any measurable increase in weight.

And this wasn’t for lack of trying. When it came to food, I was like that giant mouthmonster from Return of the Jedi, essentially eating whatever stumbled into my gaping maw and/or was thrown in as a demonstration to others.

Yes, I recognize the limits of that simile.

Despite my best efforts, by the time I entered my teens, I only barely existed in the third dimension. I pretty much had to shout to be heard over the roar of my own metabolism.

“I said, ‘WHERE ARE YOU?’” “Oh, sorry, I was standing sideways.”

“Man, you’re like a kilometre tall, in metric.”

In my early 20s I still saw no improvement. By undergrad, I had completely abandoned all the non-Chef Boyardee food groups and was moving less in a day than most continents. Still, my weight hovered at or near zero. It was as annoying to me as it was to everyone else.

Then, at 24, I turned a corner. I looked in the mirror one day and realized I could see my legs, unaided, and soon followed the first signs of actual, honest-to-God

chubbiness.

Initially, I was excited, the way I imagine people were excited when they finally got the Hindenburg off the ground, but then I quickly floated into that tower-thing in New Jersey and burst into flames, fat-wise.

It wasn’t as bad as it could have been, obviously — I could still get out of my house without removing any of the walls and stuff — but there was enough new James that I knew I’d have to change my ways.

I put myself on a diet.

Which in retrospect wasn’t very diety, by normal standards. I would only eat during waking hours, for instance. And I adopted more conservative dining habits that didn’t involve dislocating my jaw.

The effort paid off, and my weight stabilized while I could still support myself on dry land.

Soon, it came back down to a pretty healthy range.

That is, until about three months ago when, at the literal prodding of a friend, I noticed I had developed something that could be characterized by less sensitive people — such as the one doing the literal prodding — as love handles. Or at least

like handles. They weren’t fully functional, per se — you wouldn’t want to use them to carry me any distance through an airport — but they were nonetheless a problem.

This worried me, in part, because of genetics. As I’ve noted before, I trace my roots to England — or, if you want to get technical, England and the various neighbouring bits that claim they’re not England.

It’s no secret that my people are not a people who can afford to give a lot of ground, looks-wise. Many of us have the complexion of something that evolved in a cave; our ears stick out enough that we could fall out of a plane and land safely; and there’s that peculiarly British overbite that makes us look just a little bit selfsatisfied all the time, like we just colonized India and can’t wait to tell France. Love handles, even non-functional love handles, are something that need to be dealt with quickly.

Here comes the jogging part.

In high school, I played a bunch of sports, but there were only a very few (one, in metric) that I excelled at: running.

Unlike rugby or soccer — which I also played, to my teammates’ disappointment — there are no competitors, no complicated rules and no one to blow a whistle at you and yell confusing instructions: “Put the ball down!” “Shoot for the opposing goal!”

Running was something I could do.

That’s not to say I look good doing it. In terms of grace and overall stability, I’m told I run like a fast telephone pole, but I nonetheless strapped on a pair of sneakers, and for a while there was running close to 30 km a week. If you round up. And count stretching at the beginning as like five km.

The whole effort was powered, I thought, by human fat. I figured by the four-week mark, the proto-handles should have been pretty much gone.

But a month-and-a-half in, it became apparent I had succeeded only in making them pinker. If I wanted to trim down, it seemed, I was going to have to do a whole lot more. So, as with anything at which I don’t succeed on the first try, I quit.

Guns, roses and the price of freedom

Dear Editor: When Pakistan Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti was assassinated in a hail of bullets March 2 in Islamabad, Canada lost a friend that most Canadians will never know.

I first met Minister Bhatti in April 2009, when I travelled to Islamabad on a human rights mission that included an attempt to get the late West Vancouverite Beverly Giesbrecht released from Taliban captors who held her there. I met with three Pakistan cabinet ministers: the minister of foreign affairs, the minister of human rights, and Minister Bhatti. It was with Minister Bhatti that I maintained contact until as recently as last month, when he was in Ottawa, and Minister Bhatti who tried through his contacts to assist with the release of Ms. Giesbrecht, who was reported to have died of natural causes, still in Taliban hands, within recent months.

Minister Bhatti was a Christian serving as a cabinet minister in an Islamic republic which has on its books a “blasphemy law” that may be found in other Islamic republic countries, including Iran.

Under the “blasphemy law,” someone convicted of disrespecting the prophet Mohammed may be subject to criminal penalties, including death.

Minister Bhatti maintained that the blasphemy law ought to be abolished as it was used as an instrument of exploitation of the Christian and other minorities in Pakistan, often by people motivated by hatred or personal interest more than their respect for the prophet Mohammed.

When the blasphemy law was discussed with the other two ministers whom I met in Pakistan, they did not deny the problems with the blasphemy law

asserted by Minister Bhatti.

It takes courage to stand up for minority rights in Pakistan. When I was there, the place was tense, under high alert. International hotels had been the target of terrorist bombings; the Taliban exerted influence in much of the country; the Swat Valley was about to be overrun by Taliban forces; and the West quailed at the thought of the Taliban assuming control of a country with nuclear arms. Everywhere I went, I was accompanied by heavily armed guards — I was met at the airport with roses, but machine guns were my constant companion.

When Minister Bhatti visited Ottawa last month, he warned several MPs who gathered to greet him that his life was under threat.

Minister Bhatti’s story reminds us that freedom comes with a price, a price that we in modern-day Canada can too easily forget.

The U.S.-based company already operates 600 slot machines in Edgewater Casino. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation is in favour of the expansion, while VancouverCoastalHealth is against the proposal because of concerns surrounding an increase in gambling addiction.

STRIKE 1 for the Lower Lonsdale Business Improvement Area, but it will be back at the plate next year.

The all-volunteer Lower Lonsdale Business Association has pulled its request to the City of North Vancouver for Business Improvement Area status after a petition from businesses in the area, which closed Feb. 25, saw 49 per cent of the businesses in the area oppose the project.

Most of the negative votes came from the automotive shops

on Esplanade east of St. Georges Avenue — a level of opposition which hadn’t come up during the previous consultation period, said Doug Ausman, president of the association.

Ausman plans to be back next year with a revised coverage area for the proposed BIA, which won’t include the section where most of the opposition came from.

“That gives us another year to work with all the businesses in the balance of the proposed area and get their support,” he said, adding that he wished the businesses had told him their concerns earlier in the process.

“If they had given us that signal earlier . . . then we would have had the opportunity to propose to the city to exclude that area.”

Out-of-bounds skiers trigger rescue search James Weldon

TWO snowboarders were found cold but alive last week after they went out of bounds on Cypress Bowl’s Mount Strachan and wound up in a gully above Howe Sound.

The pair apparently left the resort’s Top Gun run some time in the mid-afternoon on Feb. 28 and headed down the steep, ungroomed slopes on the mountain’s west side. They crossed the Howe Sound Crest trail, their last opportunity to return safely to the marked run, and continued down into the Montizambert Creek drainage, believing there was another route out, according to rescuers.

One of the men, suspecting they were in over their heads, turned around and began the long slog back up the mountainside. The other

continued on to a point 250 metres below the Crest trail before finally coming to a halt. Stuck in deep snow and with darkness falling, the victim phoned for help.

North Shore Rescue launched a search just before 7 p.m. A team soon came across the first boarder as he was making his way back out, but they didn’t find the second until well after midnight. The volunteers gave him snowshoes and other supplies and escorted him back to safety.

The incident elicited a familiar refrain from search manager Don Jardine. “If you’re going into the backcountry, know what you’re doing,” he said. “These guys weren’t backcountry skiers; they were looking for a joyride. It could have cost them their lives.”

The rescue came just 24 hours after the volunteers plucked four out-of-bounds skiers from a very similar predicament in Coldwell Creek above Indian Arm.

RCMP seek scooter owner NORTH Vancouver RCMP are looking for the owner of a scooter found dumped in the bushes near the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing.

A passerby discovered the red Kaishan K500 W electric scooter in a patch of blackberry brambles at the north end of the bridge Feb. 26, but so far no one has come forward to claim it.

Police believe the vehicle, worth a substantial sum of money, was likely stolen.

“This was probably taken for a joyride . . . and then dumped when the person was done with it,” said Cpl. Peter DeVries, a spokesman for the North Vancouver detachment. “It belongs to somebody who may think that it’s gone for good.”

Even if you yearn for the next epic Jennifer Aniston or Ashton Kutcher masterpiece, this Whitehorse Theatre/Presentation House co-production is so good it will still have you laughing even as you gasp in dismay at the utter venality of movie producing as portrayed by Mamet.

Bobby Gould (Aaron Nelken) is a mid-level studio producer authorized only to bless script production up to a level of $10 million. He may be in a newly decorated office but any project bigger than that has to go further up the ladder for blessing.

Slightly farther down the studio food chain is Gould’s longtime hanger-on, Charlie Fox (Eric Epstein). Charlie has miraculously obtained a 24-hour option with a “name” who wants to make a prison buddy movie full of violence and the threat of rape. It’s not the theme of the script that has Charlie and Bobby salivating, but the star who wants to make it with them. Charlie is so psyched that he can’t even get out the words to the question “How much will we make?” The option is such a big deal that Bobby offers to share credit with Charlie “above the title.”

A minor problem is that Bobby’s boss is out of town, but the temporary delay can be filled by seducing the temp, Karen (Jessica Hickman). Bobby flatters her by asking her for a book report on his current “courtesy read,” a pretentiously

From page 13 arty novel about radiation and redemption by “an Eastern cissy writer.” Karen agrees to bring it to his home that evening, where she tells him that the book has changed her life.

I really want to tell you what happens next and the following morning’s plot twist back at the studio, but that would spoil the enjoyment of the play for those who haven’t seen it before — and this is a production worth seeing.

Mamet’s male-centric world of hierarchy is not immediately appealing to women, but director Sarah Rodgers makes it all as palatable as possible by extracting every ounce of humour there is in the script and keeping the idealism of Hickman’s Karen as pure as possible.

It’s a tribute to all three actors and Rodgers when I say there was only one moment in the entire play when I did not know — exactly — the meaning of what was being played on stage. The tradeoff is a slight slowing of the trademark rat-a-tat Mamet dialogue in Scene 1, but I’ll take clarity over speed any day.

The set design is simple but effective, with the scene change given as much attention to detail as everything else in this polished production.

Front and centre among them will be Kinnie Starr, part rapper, part songwriter and an all around musical talent who embodies the eclectic nature of the show in her own genre-defying music.

“I would say my style is intelligent and sexy. Those are words that a lot of people use to describe me,” says Starr by phone from Victoria, eschewing any official labels. She has a feisty style rooted in early hip-hop and rap, writing from her own life and following a non-commercial mantra.

Yet her 2010 album, A Different Day, the fifth album she’s released in her 15-year career, veered towards raw, folk melodies, often compared to the sultry chanteuse style.

“I just needed to step away from rap music for a couple of years,” she says casually, as though trying on a new pair of jeans, but she hasn’t stopped her spoken word. She’s currently wrapping up a tour of B.C. schools that included Carson Graham, where she performs for students and talks about her art.

The low-key nature and the enthusiasm of the kids is something Starr really enjoys, she says, much more than the path her career looked like it might take in the mid 1990’s. Her crisp lyrics attracted a serious bidding war among record labels, and she quickly won a cult following, but found she preferred the slow road to artistic success. Crimson Cabaret is just her kind of show, she says.

“It’s going to be a fun night…to be around that many women and supporters of what women are doing on the planet,” she says.

The annual show is a chance to celebrate female talent, most of it local, says Supriya Ryan, development and outreach coordinator at the North Shore Women’s Centre and also the show’s organizer.

“I’m excited about having a group of eclectic women from different experiences, different backgrounds, different talents come together for a common cause or show all on one stage,” she says, though the multi-genre nature of the show does make it difficult — imagine clearing a musician’s set, full of microphones and instruments, in one minute so a dance troupe can perform.

“The people who do tech hate me,” she said, laughing.

But despite the celebratory atmosphere, there’s a serious underpinning to the show, says Ryan.

She hopes to highlight areas of inequality as well celebrate past successes. Women’s organizations have been hit hard by recent cuts to gambling grants by the provincial Liberals that social service organizations like hers had relied upon.

“In a few years, we’re going to steadily see a decline of people’s quality of life and the kind of services they’re able to access,” she says, adding it comes at a time when their services are more in demand.

Women performers also face hurdles in the music industry, especially if they wish to go into highly popular and commercialized genres such as rap and hip-hop, says Starr.

“For sure, there’s a lot of expectations that you’re going to put on the very short skirt and the very high heels and get your eyebrows threaded (and) get hair extensions in, and it’s ridiculous,” she says.

While Starr was offered her share of modeling gigs, she often turned them down — preferring a more low-key approach to art.

Even though she sometimes wishes she took a more mainstream route, she says her mother tells it best.

“She knows me really well, and she said ‘you never would have been happy with that kind of visibility,’” says Starr.

Our makeover candidate, Karen, has often dreamed of having her teeth professionally whitened, so this week fashion consultant, Patti Morrison, took her to visit Dr. Bert Lee at Seymour Dental Center in Parkgate Village in North Vancouver for session three of Karen’s makeover.

It was while a university student that Margison’s true calling was realized.

“It was really quite a shift,” he says. “I decided to get a degree in university and to go and teach music in the schools.

When I was in my first year of university I met my voice teacher who introduced me to opera and just sort of kindled an affection for it there and the rest is history.”

Margison was drawn to the beauty of the music and the power of the voice to sing it.

“I think what opera has to offer more than a lot of other things is it’s really the most kaleidoscopic in terms of everything it encompasses,” he says. “You’ve got choruses, symphonic music, of course all of the dramatics onstage, costumes, the whole nine yards.

To see it all come together is really quite phenomenal.”

Margison made his

European debut in London in 1989 and from that point on never had to do another audition, seeing countless doors opened as a result, including making his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1994.

His 2010-2011 season has already hit a number of high notes. Prior to embarking on his West Coast tour Wednesday in Kamloops, he did a stint in Valencia, Spain, playing O’Brien in Lorin Maazel’s 1984.

As part of Margison’s current B.C. tour, he’s making a stop at West Vancouver’s Kay Meek Centre on March 17.

Joining him is fellow Victoria native, pianist Kinza Tyrrell.

Works on the program include French and Italian art songs, a few Beethoven pieces and opera arias of course.

“It’s great to be back in B.C. and I’m really looking forward to the next three weeks, touching base with a lot of old friends and family,” he says.

and to avoid notorious convention party-boy Dean Ziegler (John C. Reilly). It’s Tim’s first time on a plane or in a hotel: “the whole place smells like chlorine,” he gushes of the courtyard pool, “it’s like I’m in Barbados!”

So it’s a coming-of-age movie, though Tim’s age is more advanced than usual. He’s never told a lie, never had a drink and never trusted guys with ponytails. Of course he ends up roommates with the boorish Dean and Ronald Wilkes (Isiah Whitlock Jr.), the first black man Tim has ever met. Together with Joan (Anne Heche), these seasoned convention veterans introduce Tim to a world of team-building BS and partying that takes the wide-eyed yokel to all sorts of places he’s never been.

Ultimately,Tim bonds with the guys, the first real age-appropriate friends he’s had, while Joan is an opportunity to have carnal knowledge of someone not old enough to be his mother.

Helms specializes in such roles, playing a put-upon dentist in The Hangover, a Cornell

glee-club alum in The Office, and a straight-laced correspondent on Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show, and he’s excellent here. Ditto the supporting cast, though I’m not sure Reilly’s character needed to so creatively foul-mouthed, especially when Tim would be shocked by far less.

Though the mischief is predictable, the wit of the script is not. Tim doesn’t succumb to a raunchy makeover, not quite. And that’s a big part of the film’s charm: the novel notion that good guys can go to the dark side and come back to dweebdom (relatively) unscathed.

BRONSON, Emerencia Lujza(Vincze) (nee Klekner) Emi peacefully passed away at Kiwanis Care Centre North Vancouver, BC March 8, 2011.

She is predeceased by her second husband Fredrick Bronson; brother, Attila; sisters Maca, Magda and Elvira. She leaves behind her loving family; sons Joe (Deb) and Zoltan; grandchildren Teagan and Joey as well as her extended family and close friends. Born in Erdokertes, Hungary on January 7, 1931, she immigrated with her first husband, Jozsef to West Vancouver in the spring of 1957.

She had a wonderful life raising her sons in Horseshoe Bay and worked on the Blackball Ferries until 1961 and retired from BC Ferries in 1981. She spent the following 26 years living in rural Maple Ridge with Fredrick, where she enjoyed gardening, feeding the wildlife, and spending time around the pool in the summer with her family. She was a fantastic cook and looked forward to family get-togethers. When she wasn’t cooking, you could find her behind the sewing machine creating something unique for her grandchildren. She was proud of her heritage and adored her family back in the old country with many visits over the years. Emi spent the last year and a half of her life at the Kiwanis Care Centre and the family would like to extend our gratitude to the staff for the love and care they provided her. A short service will be held at 3pm Saturday, March 12 First Memorial/Boal Chapel 1505 Lillooet Rd North Vancouver.

THE 2011 Kia Rondo, while difficult to classify, is a competitively priced and highly versatile urban utility vehicle. Like all Kia models, it comes with an industry-leading warranty that covers almost everything for five years or 100,000 kilometres.

THE Kia Rondo is a hard to classify vehicle as it doesn’t quite fit snugly into any of the established categories.

It’s obviously not a car, it’s too tall to be a conventional station wagon and not rugged enough to be an SUV. While compact on the outside, the Rondo can seat up to seven inside, yet it doesn’t have sliding side doors like a minivan.

An Internet search for an answer produced lots of hits on Rondo the double-tripling (or is it triple-

Letterman Buys Ford On Air When you think about carguy hosts, your mind might immediately go to the one with the big chin who’s a bit of a TV-show hog. Maybe, at a stretch, you could also argue that Conan’s green Taurus SHO is a “classic” and shows distinction and taste. But don’t forget about Dave!

If you’re not aware, David Letterman owned a V8-powered Volvo station wagon that was part of a pair owned by none other than Paul Newman. Both cars were also supercharged and had in the neighbourhood of 400hp, which is pretty brisk in any car, and as surprising to find in an old Volvo as discovering that your gran just punched out George Saint Pierre in the UFC octagon.

But Dave’s not just about sleeper cars. In fact, he’s been trying to get his hands on one of the new, all-electric Nissan Leafs. Environmentally sensitive? Well, the things he’s been saying about the constant delays surrounding the Nissan’s release haven’t been very sensitive.

Things came to a head when producers tried to make him wax poetic about Nissan and Ford, both show sponsors. Dave ranted and raved and then announced a contest: he’d buy a car from whichever dealer got to the show first.

As it turns out, Ford won the race when a salesperson from a local dealership showed up with a Fusion hybrid. However, things weren’t so easy — Dave wanted to haggle on price.

A bargain was finally struck, Letterman got his car and Ford got priceless publicity. But not all publicity is good. . . .

Ferrari Names F1 After Ford Pickup The latest iteration of Ferrari’s F1 car is a thing of beauty. It’s as delicate and high-strung as a thoroughbred quarter horse, and Ferrari has decided to name it the F150 Italia in a tribute to the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification.

Hold on a second there, hoss! That done be the name of my dad-gum pick-um-up truck, dangit!

Yep, the good people at Ford are butting heads with the Italians again. Last time this happened, Henry Ford was so annoyed at having his bid to buy Ferrari rejected that he had the GT40 racecar built to whip the Italians at Le Mans (which it did).

This time, Ford is worried that customers for their F150 pickup truck might be confused by the F1 racer’s designation.

Um, not to be a pest, but if you accidentally buy a be-winged, million-dollar Formula One racecar to tow your boat because the name is similar to a pickup, then you’re an idiot. A rich idiot, but still.

Ferrari seems to be much of the same opinion, testily declaring, “Therefore the name will now read as the Ferrari 150° Italia, which should make it clear even to the thickest of people that the name of the car is a tribute to the anniversary of the unification of our country.”

The little circle after 150 makes the car’s name now read “150th” in Italian.

But from time to time, PETA will do things that make me scratch my head in complete bewilderment. The latest?

Well, it turns out that Mazda has issued a very strange recall. Normally, these bulletins are for wonky fluid caps or corrosion problems or other hum-drum stuff. This time it turns out that the fuel system in an ’09 or ’10 Mazda6 is a perfect hidey-hole for the Yellow Sac Spider.

I know some of you arachnophobes have already fled screaming into the hillsides, but the tiny yellow spiders are harmless and almost

cute. However, they can clog up the charcoal canister, so Mazda is issuing a fix for it, although no one seems to know why the eightlegged critters have an affinity for zoom-zoom.

Now PETA has stepped in and said that any owner who wants to donate their Mazda to the cause can be assured that the spiders will be removed humanely. Personally, I think that’s a bit much, especially considering that if you cared about insects that much, you couldn’t possibly own anything with a bug-murdering windshield.

The Looks A Rondo is probably easier to spot from the rear, due to its distinctive rear door and matching elbowed taillight design. It’s also a design that allows for a good-sized rear window and it has a wide-opening lift-up door that allows easy access to the cargo area.

Up front, the new grille adopts the tiger nose design, first used on the Forte, that’s intended to be a Kia signature feature.

A steeply sloping hood flows nicely into the windshield.

Overall, the Rondo has a very pleasant, clean-looking design.

The Inside According to Kia, the highly functional Rondo’s seating can be arranged in 32 different configurations with the optional third-row seat. My test Rondo, however, had only two rows and five seats. And instead of a third row seat, it came with extra storage compartments under the cargo floor.

Folding the second row seats presented a perfectly flat extend cargo floor, which is great if you have to slide something heavy into the space. There’s 898 litres (31.7 cubic feet) of cargo space behind the second row seat and it expands to a whopping 2,083 litres (73.4 cubic feet) with the second row seat folded.

The driver sits higher than a car, but not as high as an SUV. So the seat has a butt-height slide-in point that should make it easier for many drivers to get in or out. The automatic shift lever is located on a ledge that juts out of the centre stack and allows more floor space between the front seats.

Externally they include a new front (tiger nose) grille, the roof rails change from black to a silver colour and the Rondo gets a chrome-tipped tailpipe. Inside, the door window switches are illuminated, there are new chrome interior accents (all trims), an electric remote fuel door release (all trims), the EX trims get a folding key and the EX-V6 luxury gets a rear view camera.

Both powertrain offerings have been around for a while and, while still good, they’re beginning to look a bit dated. The Hyundai-sourced 2.4-litre engine has been a stalwart power-provider and it’s linked to a four-speed automatic. The latest new product offerings these days are typically coming with five- or even six-speed automatics that improve fuel economy.

Like all Kia models, the Rondo also comes with an industryleading warranty that covers almost everything for five years or 100,000 kilometres.

The Drive On paper, the 2.7-litre V6 engine, which came in my test Rondo, doesn’t look like a huge upgrade. However, the two additional cylinders do help deliver its extra power in a smoother manner and the fuel economy penalty is not great. Plus, it comes attached to a five-speed automatic.

Called the Sportmatic, this transmission offers a manual mode, which can come in handy as it’s sometimes a little slow to kick down into a lower gear. Acceleration to 100 km/hour is in the nine-second range, which is good. In fact, its off-the-line jump is a tad too strong and the “tip-in” could be dialled back a bit to give the gas pedal a more measured response.

Vision to the side and rear is better than most wagontype vehicles when seated

behind the steering wheel.

A raised seating position and lots of glass helps minimize blind spots in the Rondo when you have to look over your shoulder.

While the Rondo provides light and athletic driving dynamics, it’s not going to make too many people’s list of cars they love to drive. The ride is surprisingly comfortable, yet the overall focus here is on utility, where the Rondo certainly delivers.

The Score An inner-space surprise, the Kia Rondo is a tall, compact front-drive, five- or sevenpassenger vehicle with great utility and a very reasonable price tag.

Keep your eyes on the road

THIS Sunday, we move our clocks forward for the annual change to daylight savings time.

According to a press release from the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation, a spike in road risk often accompanies this seasonal time change. B.C. crash statistics show that on the Monday after the time change, there are 23 per cent more crashes than on the Monday prior.

Sleep-related collisions are common and range from hitting a pedestrian in an intersection or rear-ending the vehicle in front of you to veering off of the road and into a parked car or a telephone pole.

Sleep is what the body really needs to be able to function properly. Time changes reflect a change in social clocks, not biological ones, and studies show that our circadian rhythms (body clocks) don’t See Use page 39
