Prisoner goes to court for dentures Jane Seyd

jseyd@nsnews.com

A North Vancouver man serving a prison sentence in a Fraser Valley jail is taking the government to court for pulling his teeth without permission and refusing to give him dentures.

Reza Eshghabadi, 52, who is being held in Fraser Regional Correctional Centre, has filed a petition in B.C. Supreme Court, asking a judge to review the jail’s refusal to give him dentures. Eshghabadi says being toothless has resulted in significant weight loss, diabetes and other health problems. Jail staff have so far refused the dentures, saying lack of teeth has not resulted in any physical problems, despite recommendations from a dentist that they be provided. They added that Eshghabadi agreed to have his teeth removed. According to the court documents, Eshghabadi’s See NV page 3

Cell towers to get a second look

THE locations of two controversial telecommunications towers proposed by Rogers alongside Highway 1 on the North Shore will get a second look after an outcry by nearby residents.

The towers in question are a 41-metre tower proposed for the highway right-of-way at the end of Tempe Glen Drive in North Vancouver and a 29.5-metre tower proposed for the space between the westbound Taylor Way off-ramp and the highway. Rogers has held meetings with the City of North Vancouver

If alternate locations possible, Rogers will consult communities

and West Vancouver staff over the proposed towers, and if options are identified they will be taken to the residents in the area, said Sara Holland, spokeswoman for Rogers Communications. “Through the process we had a chance to hear from the community and the municipality, and what we’ve heard is that there are concerns,” said Holland of the North Vancouver tower. “We’ve also heard the municipality would like to work with us to find a solution that works with everyone.”

The announcement in North Vancouver came on Feb. 11, the last day of consultations, while West Vancouver’s consultation process has been suspended. A petition effort opposed to the tower’s location in Tempe Heights gathered signatures from 205 of the 240 houses in the neighbourhood, with 97 per cent of residents who were contacted signing the petition, said organizer Ralph Johnstone. Johnstone said he was happy to see the change had been made, but said there was no suitable location for this style of tower in the area. See City page 3
