A North Vancouver business is taking a bold step into the future by installing a publicly available charging station for electric vehicles.

Angel Restoration was given permission by District of North Vancouver council Monday to install a station on district land in front of its business at 1484 Rupert St. President David McLeod told councillors that his work with Cool North Shore inspired him to make his business more environmentally friendly and to look into moving his company’s fleet of vehicles towards electric power. While those cars and trucks are not yet on Canadian markets, McLeod wanted to put the infrastructure in ahead of time.

Police arrest 5 at Capilano RV Park Tessa Holloway

FIVE operators from the Capilano RV Park were arrested Wednesday morning after police, armed with a court order, swooped in to remove them from the property.

The Squamish Indian Band obtained the order Jan. 14 to enforce an injunction they filed with the B.C. Supreme Court in December against the six operators of the park: Darlene Baker, Dennis Baker, Franklin Baker, Wade Baker, Wayne Baker and Pamela Pack.

Court injunction enforced for non-payment of rent to Squamish

The band claims the defendants, all members of the Baker family that has operated the RV and manufactured home parks since 1966, have refused to negotiate a new five-year lease for both operations and stopped paying rent in May. The Squamish Nation owns the land and is seeking about $500,000 in unpaid rent for the property. They also plan to take over operations of the park.

West Vancouver police spokesman Jag Johal said all five will face

charges, but were all released with conditions pending charges.

“They were read the conditions within the court order injunction and they refused to leave the premises,” he said.

A court-ordered receiver, D. Manning & Associates Inc., has taken over management of the park indefinitely, according to court documents filed on Jan. 14.

Squamish chief Gibby Jacob said the dispute began when the last 10-year lease ran out in 2008, at which point council said they would agree to a final five-year lease. After that, council planned for the band to take over operation of the park.

for a new lease and stopped paying rent for the land entirely in May of last year. The rent, valued at about $50,000 each month, is needed to pay for programs run by the band, he said.

“You’re given an option, and the option is if you cross the line you will get arrested. They chose to cross,” he said. “It was not our desire to be doing what we’re doing, but we have a legal duty to our membership to ensure that we are getting the funds that we get in — and every dollar we get gets budgeted.”

He said no tenants will be removed from the site and that any employees who aren’t among the former operators will be allowed to keep their jobs.

A number of reserve residents huddled near the site early Wednesday morning to watch the commotion, including supporters of the Baker family.

Donald Mathias Joe described how he watched police escort the previous operators out of the property and into waiting police cars. He didn’t agree with band council using West Vancouver police to solve the dispute, he said, and he argued the action will discourage people from starting up businesses on the reserve, arguing the band council needs to be more business-friendly.

“If you want to be an entrepreneur on this reserve, you can’t open a business because the (Squamish) Nation will seize it,” he said, adding he doesn’t believe the profits from the park will benefit most residents.

“They aren’t looking out for the whole nation as a whole,” he said of band council. “It’s only a little group that benefits.”

The former operators have not filed a statement of defence with the B.C. Supreme Court.

The whole intention was to green our business,” said McLeod’s son, Cameron, also before council. “We don’t know what kind of electric vehicles we’ll be purchasing for our fleet, but we know when we do we’ll need a charging station for them. So we decided to put it out there and share that with the district because if we don’t have any vehicles to charge there we might as well not let it go to waste and share it with the public.”

The McLeods said their station will be the first privately owned, publicly available charging station in Canada. What’s more, they said, they don’t stand to make a dime on it.

“Six cents a kilowatt-hour,” said David McLeod, “and it takes about five to ten kilowatt-hours to charge a car, so it’s basically going to be free to the public. BC Hydro said we could charge them and we will be charging them on their Visa cards, but the amount of money we’ll get back is ridiculous.”

District staff estimated the station will cost about $8,000 to install. In his written report to council, environmental planning projects manager Ken Bennett said that British Columbia has one of the largest price gaps between gasoline and electricity in North America. The estimated $1,200 savings per year per driver has led BC Hydro to plan for up to 25,000 electric vehicles to hit the streets over the next three years, Bennett wrote.

The Angel Restoration site will have space for two vehicles to park and will support a variety of charging options, ranging from 14 hours to 30 minutes. The station will recharge plug-in hybrids as well as purely electric cars and trucks.

“We’ll wait for the production to be delivered locally and see what kind of uptake there is,” said Coun. Mike Little, “but I think in the long run these kinds of installations are probably going to have to become commonplace, particularly in retail centres where someone parks for a couple of hours. It’s a great way to attract customers to your facility.”

“Thank you for putting your money where your mouth is,” he said to the McLeods.

Councillors also questioned staff on when the district would field an electric vehicle fleet.

“We are looking at two particular units that are coming on to the market sometime later this year,” said chief administrative officer David Stuart. “But right now we’re looking at $30,000 for a threeyear lease, so we’re hoping that the price point comes down so we can have a business case. There’s the triple bottom line, but we also have to look at spending taxpayers’ money.”

Maybe for a while, but then we’ll get our infrastructure set up.”

Principals oppose FSA testing They say the problem is not the test, but the politics around it

THE fight by provincial teachers to change the province’s standardized test system gained strength last week after obtaining the support of the B.C. Principals’ and Vice Principals’ Association.

In the first week that students sit down to write the Foundation Skills Assessment test, the principals’ association released a statement Jan. 19 calling for an end to the highly disputed testing system.

“The FSA as the chosen standardized testing measure is no longer able to do what it was designed to do,” association president Jameel Aziz said in a statement to the public.

The provincial test was introduced in schools in 2000 to gauge Grade 4 and Grade 7 students’ reading, writing and math skills.

According to the Ministry of Education, the test allows schools, planning councils and the province to assess students’ basic skills and “make plans to improve student achievement.”

But in recent years, the Ministry of Education and B.C. teachers have clashed over the FSA test’s usefulness.

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation opposes the annual test, saying the tests “do not help students learn or teachers teach.”

But for the B.C. Principals’ and Vice Principals’ Association, the main problem of the FSA test is not the test itself but the politics surrounding the issue. And for principals’ association head Jameel Aziz, the tension between teachers and boards of education have

made the test difficult to properly use in classrooms.

“The banter that goes on back and forth between the parties around the test have made a very confusing for parents and students in the province to understand its validity,” he told the North Shore News. “Principals and vice-principals have reached a point where they are finding that administrating the FSA is extremely challenging.”

He pointed to the declining numbers of students taking the FSA as a major problem. He criticized the teachers’ federation for undermining test participation, referring to widely circulated memos endorsed by BCTF president Susan Lambert that encourage parents to exempt their children from the test.

Aziz also echoed education stakeholders’ concerns over the use of FSA results in annual reports issued by the Fraser Institute, a B.C.based conservative think-tank. In his public statement, he called the institute’s use of test results to rank schools’ performances a “misuse of data” that “does not reflect the many unique challenges faced by individual schools.”

Daniel Storms, president of the North Vancouver Teachers’ Association, also slammed the Fraser Institute’s report as “completely bogus” and praised the principals’ association for speaking out against the FSA test.

“I have to be honest, I was very, very pleased to read the press release,” Storms said. “These are things that the teachers’ association has been saying for several years. Teachers don’t value it, and it doesn’t help them help the students.”

Storms said that the ministry, teachers, principals and other stakeholders must come together to discuss a more appropriate way to evaluate how well students are achieving basic skills. And See Stakeholders page 5

Cause of WV salon fire is being investigated

A fire at a nail salon on Marine Drive filled the building with black, toxic smoke and gave firefighters a hectic job Tuesday night and into the following morning.

A local shopkeeper called the West Vancouver fire department at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday after noticing the smoke pouring out of the Four Seasons Nail & Spa at 1846 Marine Dr. Firefighters responded, but at first had trouble locating the fire. At the rear of the block, crews saw smoke coming from a

basement doorway, but could see nothing once it was opened.

“The smoke was very thick, very black, and firefighters were having a real hard time manoeuvring inside the building,” said assistant chief Martin Ernst after washing his equipment of the soot.

Once his crews cleared the building of smoke using large fans, the fire turned out to be much smaller than expected.

Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to find several spot fires of burning material — much of it toxic nail polish and nail polish remover — in different locations throughout the building, that Ernst said could have been smouldering for a See Neighbour’s page 5

“Based on the really, really dark smoke, it may have started a half hour before that or maybe even an hour before,” he said. “Some fires are very free-burning and others are smouldering, and this was definitely a smouldering fire.

It never really caught hold of anything, just burned what it could as far as contents go.

He said sometimes highly flammable material can ignite just from the heat of a nearby fire, but the fire is still being treated as suspicious until the cause can be fully determined.

West Vancouver police were working with firefighters at the scene.

About 25 firefighters responded in total with four fire engines and one tower truck, with firefighters called in from the District of North Vancouver — an unusual decision showing how serious firefighters felt the fire was.

Ernst, but smoke damage was extensive. Much of the equipment used by the nail salon, which just moved into the new location weeks ago, could be a write-off.

“It’s brand new equipment, so it’s a real shame,” he said. “But there’s very little structural damage if any.”

That is likely in part thanks to the person who called the fire in, since firefighters found

no working smoke alarms inside the building.

“It’s fantastic to have eyes on the street and with the proliferation of cellphones as well, we get instant phone calls from the scene,” said Ernst.

Stakeholders need to discuss tests From page 3 he stated that the province must eliminate standardized testing procedures if it wants to effectively gauge progress in the education system.

“You don’t need to test every single student,” he said. “We’ve been saying this for years.”

Storms called for a reintroduction of the PLAP, a provincial learning assessment program first introduced in the 1970s that provided provincewide results based on random sampling every few years instead of the FSA, that provides individual student results annually.

But for principals’ association Jameel Aziz, there is no right answer as to how the province should assess its education system until all stakeholders come together to discuss the matter. “We need a measure that can work . . . and that doesn’t create turmoil and angst in the system that this current (FSA) test has,” he said.

PPARENTLY, Canada is not in the middle of an election.

But you’d never guess it from watching the antics of the federal political parties.

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and NDP leader Jack Layton have both been on the road with tours that feel a lot like pre-election campaigns, aimed at beefing up support in strategic ridings — including West Vancouver, where Iggy made a recent stop.

This week the Tories launched a series of attack ads, painting Ignatieff as a political tourist out to destroy jobs and hop into bed with Quebec separatists.

Both Ignatieff and Harper have been keen to point out that they don’t want an election. But they’ve insisted the “other side” might force them into it.

Expect the political shenanigans

to get worse until the federal budget, when the election/no election issue will be decided, once again.

When’s the last time Canada’s politicians haven’t been involved in election campaigning? For that, we’d have to go back to the beginning of the Conservatives’ minority win.

Shockingly, the sky hasn’t fallen since Canadians opted for a minority government. But the ability of the Tories to work with the other parties in this scenario has left much to be desired.

Rather than working on the art of compromise, our minority government has largely translated into an unofficial yet continual state of campaigning.

Not many Canadians are keen on an election. But equally unappealing is an ongoing undeclared campaign that trumps the business of government.

Our family was treated like criminals at YVR

Dear Editor: I am writing this because there has been so much in the news lately of intrusive bodily checks at the airports; this morning on the news, an elderly German woman was forced to lift her arms higher than her prosthetic breast allowed her to. I found myself crying with her and now sit down to write my account.

Last month my family and I decided to go to Disneyland for the weekend. It was to be a very short trip, so we booked a 6 a.m. flight out of YVR (Vancouver) in order to get the most out of the weekend. We woke our two girls, 13 and two years old at 3:30 a.m. so we would make it to the airport from our home in North Vancouver, with plenty of time.

There is nothing exceptional about our family that would alarm any airport authority: middle class, Caucasian, no criminal records and two young children. We had return tickets and from our luggage it was apparent we wouldn’t be out of the country for longer than the weekend. For some reason our family was put through the full inspection line. I don’t know if this is done randomly or if there is some method to it. Nevertheless, we were targeted.

A cranky two year old at the airport at 4:30 a.m. is difficult enough to manage without having to go through the painful experience that we did. First we were put through the regular scanning system. I am OK with that. Then the female inspector pulled on a pair of latex gloves, looked me squarely in the eyes and said “OK, you have two choices, full body search by me, or the machine over there.” What I should have said at this point was “Disneyland is not worth this level of privacy intrusion. I pick neither, I am going home.” But that is hindsight.

But by now the clock was ticking and it was near boarding time.

The pressure was on, we had to get the kids to Disneyland, we’d come this far. My little one was crying because she didn’t want her

backpack to go through the X-ray machine, she was afraid she’d never get it back. We were standing there in our bare feet, looking at each other in disbelief.

They now gave my entire family this choice (except for the two year old). I asked if the machine emitted any kind of harmful rays.

“No, we’re not the U.S.” was her reply. What is that supposed to mean? The ones in the U.S. are dangerous and the Canadian ones aren’t? There was no one there to give me a medical or scientific explanation of what kind of effects that machine would have on our bodies. We might find out in five years it causes birth defects and cancer cells. But an internal body check for us was out of the question. It would be traumatic, mortifying, and we’d surely miss our flight. We acquiesced in the name of a weekend to Disneyland, held our breath and stepped into the unknown scanner.

This wasn’t the end of it. Then they had to swab my hysterical two year old for drug remnants! She was sobbing and I had to pry open her little hands so they could take their cold wet cloth that’s

held in that big black tong and wipe down her hands and forearms.

It was disgusting.

By now our flight was boarding and we were nowhere near the gate. Our luggage, my handbag, everything was swabbed.

And nothing was found. Of course they didn’t find anything, why would they? We are taxpaying, law-abiding citizens that were treated like criminals and had our rights violated in that eight-footsquare space of no-man’s land. It was probably much like the area that Robert Dziekanski got so frustrated in. We were stripped of our dignity and our time; he was robbed of his life.

How much longer can this go on? Where is the governing body that is meant to protect us and ensure our rights? Is there one?

I am curious. Perhaps other North Shore News readers have had similar experiences, or can shed some light on this disturbing system.

Put West Vancouver power lines underground Dear Editor: The power outage we experienced on Tuesday, Jan. 11 was the fourth in our area since last October. I understand that it was caused by a fallen tree/branch which brought down lines and caused them to “arc” and cut off power to the area.

It seems that power outages in the Dundarave area are becoming more frequent as each year passes. I have lived in my home since 1975 and have previously suggested to the West Vancouver municipality that we would be well served if the power lines were relocated below ground. I spent many years in South Africa where

the lines are underground: many people would suggest that West Vancouver should have the necessary resources and funds to complete such a project if it can be done in southern Africa.

My frustration lies in the fact that we are also given no information relating to the outages that we have to research for ourselves while we endure the dark, cold and discomfort in our homes. My sense is that at the very least the system requires upgrading and safety issues have to be taken into consideration.

Idealogy, populism and the compromise

AS our two main political parties continue to move towards electing new leaders, it’s worth noting that each of them face remarkably similar options when it comes to picking a new face.

For example, either party can opt to walk along a more rigid ideological path. Kevin Falcon represents the most right-wing option for the B.C. Liberals, while the NDP’s Adrian Dix is a mirror image of him, albeit on the left-wing side of the spectrum.

And both parties are fielding candidates that appear to have a more populist streak to them. Christy Clark of the B.C. Liberals and John Horgan from the NDP seem to fit this bill.

Finally, both parties are fielding strong, centrist candidates: the NDP’s Mike Farnworth and the B.C. Liberals’ George Abbott and Mike de Jong are probably closer to each other when it comes to policies than they are with some of their own rivals in their own parties.

Each party is eyeing the other one, wondering what kind of scenario will develop after they make their choices.

Judging from what many people are saying in both parties, I suspect each party is

hoping the other one opts for the most ideological candidate.

The B.C. Liberals seem to relish the prospect of running against Dix, whose close association with the classwarfare tactics of the former Glen Clark government gives his opponents lots of ammunition to fire back at him.

Likewise, New Democrats would love to square off against Falcon, who they consider to be too right-wing for many middle-of-the-road voters who may consider voting for either party.

Of course, any problems the general public may have with either candidate don’t necessarily cut much ice with the party members who will be choosing the leaders. In fact, Dix may hold an advantage over his rivals precisely because he is the most leftwing candidate, given that

a major chunk of the party membership likely shares his philosophical views.

Both parties seem to be less sure about the so-called populist candidates. Some New Democrats think Clark would be an inviting target, while others I talk to are nervous about her charisma and communications skills.

Horgan is the candidate who may puzzle the B.C. Liberals the most, at least for now. He’s relatively unknown and doesn’t have a lot of baggage from the past.

But it is the middle-of-theroad candidates who seem to have both sides equally nervous.

Farnworth, Abbott and, to a lesser degree, De Jong, are the types of leaders who can poach voters from other parties.

Not everyone who votes for the B.C. Liberals consider themselves right-wing, just as not all NDP voters think they are leftists.

As such, Farnworth could appeal to a lot of soft B.C. Liberals who may be tired of their party but who don’t want to embrace a jarringly different kind of philosophy.

Abbott is the same kind of candidate. He could easily appeal to soft NDP voters who are uneasy about the New Democrats’ reputation on

New website attempts to demystify the HST Kerry Blackadar

IT has been more than six months since the Harmonized Sales Tax came into effect but, according to the B.C. Liberals, the public remains a little perplexed about the true ramifications of the new tax.

The Liberals say public opinion research released in December revealed that “there is confusion about the HST’s implications,” and identified that “the majority of British Columbians are interested in reviewing straightforward and factual information about the HST.” In response, the government has launched a

new website, www.hstinbc.ca, aimed at providing users with “reliable, factual information so they can eventually make an informed decision on whether to keep the HST or return to the PST/GST.” The site, which was launched Jan. 21, hosts a series of short-videos, featuring British Columbians posing hard-hitting questions, such as “Why is there HST on my coffee and favourite scone?” or raising concerns, like “I’d like to know where the HST money you collected is going to be spent.”

The government site also offers a series of thorough descriptions of how HST impacts buying goods, managing a household, or running a business.

The HST referendum is presently set for September.

Will NDP react to Liberals’ choice?

Since the B.C. Liberals choose their leader first, it will be interesting to see if that choice has a direct bearing on the views of NDP members. Will it provide them with a guide to the better choice, or will it simply confuse things even further?

For example, if Clark wins, NDPers have to ask themselves which of their candidates would fare best against her. Would Dix or, say, Farnworth stand the best chance?

Of if Abbott wins, is the NDP better off to go with an ideologue (Dix) or a moderate like Farnworth? Imagine a Falcon victory coupled with a Dix win: that would create a lively but polarizing choice for voters: right versus left,

with no prisoners being taken.

Of course, many NDP members won’t take any of this into consideration when they mark their ballots. Winning elections is not the motivation for many of them — ensuring the party rigidly sticks to an ideological path is more important.

Nevertheless, the potential match-ups are intriguing. Will it be an ideologue versus a moderate, or a populist versus an ideologue, or a moderate versus a populist?

Both parties face the same array of choices.

Whatever the outcome, it’s going to be fascinating to watch.

“Inventories are simply a list of properties or sites,” explained community planner Kathleen Larson at a Jan. 17 council workshop, adding the inventory has no legal protection whatsoever. If an owner requests a demolition permit, she said, “ultimately staff would have little recourse but to comply in a fairly short time period.”

A heritage registry, on the other hand, would allow staff to put a temporary protection order for a specified amount of time, which currently requires council approval. That allows staff to work with the owner to save the building, said Larson, which could include relaxing some zoning provisions. If the owner

ON her new album, Side Dish, an EP set for release in the spring, Babe Gurr opted to move away from her typical approach to music, choosing instead to present a blend of sounds drawing on a host of cultures from around the world.

“I think everyone should step outside of the box once in a while,” says the Vancouver-based singer/songwriter. “I think, really, most artists that I admire have.”

That includes the groups she listened to growing up: for example, Led Zeppelin, who on “Kashmir” incorporated sounds from the Middle East and surrounding areas, and The Beatles, who experimented with orchestration and sitar on various projects.

“With this album I’m fusing world beat with my roots-based music and it’s different,” she says. “I think it’ll go over quite well — I’m

hoping it will.”

Gurr’s decision to move in this direction was the result of her strong love for Italy. She has visited the country a number of times and is studying its language. Last summer, she started performing a cover of “Colpo Di Coda,” which means “the flick of a tail.”

“It’s a beautiful song and it’s written in kind of a tango style,” she says. “It’s about a fellow who goes back to a home that he once shared with someone he was in love with and they had a child and they split up. . . . He finds the house is still standing but it’s in the middle of the winter and everything else is pretty much dead around it. He finds it quite discouraging and then he sees a little flower pushing its way through the snow and life goes on with the flick of a tail.”

Gurr’s fans responded positively and requested a recorded version.

“I thought if I record this, this is totally in left field, so maybe I better record something around it that at least makes sense,” she says.

Side Dish will include a second Italian song, “Solo Mia,” which she treats with a Spanish flair, and a tango she penned called “I’m Just Here to Dance.” Gurr also experiments with MiddleEastern, Indian and Latin sounds on a few other tracks. “With my vocal being kind of more bluesy roots, it’s an interesting blend,” she says.

Destroyer make it work

■ Destroyer — Kaputt (Merge Records) Rating: 9 (out of 10) Agent provocateur Dan Bejar has built his latest Destroyer with easy listening influences (smooth jazz, AOR disco pop) and a straight face.

Like a Buster Keaton or a Baudelaire he’s put it out there and awaits your response. Every city needs at least one poète maudit and he gets the nod CD REVIEWS here for persistence of vision above and beyond the call of On Kaputt, Bejar’s labyrinthine garden is in civic duty.

Poète maudit point stuff out. Things are going full bloom. Sonically the album doesn’t sound wrong. They don’t necessarily have solutions; in like previous Destroyer records or for that matter fact, more often than not they will lead you down much else that’s being released these days. It has a garden path of possibilities. They want you to a decidely retro vibe that never lets up. focus on the journey and not the destination. You will eventually get there anyway.

However, putting that aside on their newest record to present straight up country rock songs is what’s going to earn the talented collective the

wider respect they deserve.

The King is Dead features 10 tracks that as a whole are more traditional in composition than previous releases. The roots-infused simplicity and profound lyrics are testament to the songwriting abilities of frontman, Colin Meloy.

The record starts strong with “Don’t Carry it All,” laden with bluegrass instruments — fiddle, harmonica, pedal-steel and mandolin included — and that momentum is maintained throughout, no doubt aided by the noticeable presence of guest artists Peter Buck of R.E.M. and talented singer Gillian Welch.

Their contributions are most felt in first single “Down by the Water,” an upbeat number rich in meaning and in musicality; two things The Decemberists, no matter what adventure they embark on, maintain a sense of at all times.

It must be late January, early February: that time when Oscar nominees are announced and when the studios dole out their more easily digestible film fare. That’s why you’ll see more horror on the roster, starting with The Rite, opening today.

The Rite is the latest on a very long list of films aiming to best 1973’s The Exorcist, the holy grail of horror. Claiming to be possessed by Satan comes in handy when you’ve murdered someone, or to explain why you’ve wasted a whole evening watching a Jersey Shore marathon.

Exorcism is modernizing with the times, too: according to Dr. (Rev.) Miles Bateman, a chaplain with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and pro at allexperts.com, it’s possible See Inspired page 19

to exorcise from a distance: over the Internet, for example. (Though Bateman recommends water, oil and salt, he never elaborates on how to sprinkle them via cyberspace.)

And how’s this for newfangled: some modernday Pentecostals believe a deliverance ritual can cure gayness. Now if only they could do something about my husband’s baldness…

But exorcism is most closely associated with the Roman Catholic church, especially in film, because nuns’ habits and priestly vestments look more menacing than jeans.

So, another day, another demonic possession.

Filmmakers would sell their soul for a new spin on the exorcism story. Last year’s The Last Exorcism, just released on DVD, had some success with the handheld approach, affecting a cinema verite look as a backwoods preacher brought a camera crew along to expose the exorcism racket.

The Rite has its own spin. The film seems to be marketing itself as a Christianfriendly film, one “inspired by

true events,” as the Vatican announced a new push to train priests in the exorcism rite, amid growing demand.

The whole thing has a whiff of authenticity owing to the fact that it started out as a book proposal by Matt Baglio, a reporter living in Rome.

The story centres on young American priest Michael Kovak (Colin Donoghue, in his feature debut) who is sent to Rome to study Exorcism (presumably just down the hall from Marion Studies, and Bingo 101).

But Michael is a doubter. In a move that would anger Tom Cruise, Michael recommends psychiatry over other methods.

Michael’s superiors send him to an unconventional priest named Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), a cleric who has performed somewhere near a thousand exorcisms, and the two men engage in some lively spiritual debate: “she doesn’t need a priest, she needs a shrink,” Michael insists after meeting with one patient.

“Choosing not to believe in the devil won’t protect you from him,” Lucas warns prophetically.

early warning signs of being possessed by a demon. (And also of drinking too much sacramental wine.)

Despite the fact that Anthony Hopkins looks like he could go all Hannibal Lecter and kick some serious demon butt, Catholics have been burned at the boxoffice before (DaVinci Code, anyone?). It remains to be seen whether or not Christians will embrace the film — complete with introductory quote from the late Pope John Paul II — or pray for director Mikael Hafstrom’s soul.

Group seeks out more choices for new moms Tessa Holloway

KASCHELLE Thiessen has learned a lot since she first gave birth to her son Dreighton, who is now five.

At the time, the North Vancouver mother of two said she felt powerless to make many of the decisions about her health care, but she’s hoping to turn that experience into positive changes as part of a national consumer advocacy group dedicated to giving mothers more choice.

“My experience through the pregnancy was good with my obstetrician, but afterwards in the post-partum care ward I was treated not very well,” said Thiessen, who was 18 at the time she gave birth to her first child. “A lot of people who I was in contact with treated me very poorly because of my age.

“The message I received from a lot of places was we don’t think you’re going to breastfeed so we’re not going to help you do it.”

By the time her second child was born, Thiessen was working as a doula — someone who provides non-medical assistance to pregant women.

She insisted on having a midwife help her through the pregnancy, and said she felt much more empowered.

It’s that experience she hopes other mothers get with the help of Mothers for Change, a national not-forprofit consumer advocacy group founded in May of last year to give moms more of a say in their health care choices.

“We’re feeling there’s a big lack of information and

mothers aren’t able to make an informed choice. Things are just being done to them, they’re being told it’s necessary and they’re not getting information on the risks of these procedures or the benefits of not having them, about trying alternatives or even that they’re allowed to try alternatives,” she said. “We want to make sure all mothers get this information, not just mothers who choose a good health care provider.”

For example, Thiessen raised concern about Canada’s high rate of caesarean births.

According to a UBC study, less than two per cent of caesarean births in B.C. were a result of maternal request, and Thiessen is concerned some women get

the difficult procedure when they don’t have to and without a warning that the procedure can prevent a mother from breastfeeding.

The organization is just in the beginning stages of setting up chapters across the country, and Thiessen is working to establish a chapter on the North Shore.

Floating’s ripples continue their journey

■ Floating, created by Hugh Hughes and Sioned Rowlands, a Hoipolloi production presented with the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival at the Arts Club Revue Stage to Feb. 5.

I really didn’t expect to be rethinking Floating a week after seeing it, but I find it still resonating inside of me as I write this.

It’s a great feeling.

On the face of it, Floating is a fanciful but simple fable that only remains interesting because of the immense charm of its two actors.

I’ve had several conversations with others who have told me they liked the performances but found the show “didn’t go anywhere.”

In one sense, that’s certainly true; despite lots of apparent silliness, Floating ends where it begins, on the bridge that connects the Isle of Anglesey to the rest of Wales.

In the intervening 75 minutes, Anglesey breaks away from the U.K. and voyages the Atlantic before returning whence it came.

You didn’t hear about the great subduction that created the rift and broke off a piece of Britain because Margaret Thatcher had cornered the news by invading the Falkland Islands.

Prior to that mythic journey, Hugh Hughes and fellow actor Sioned Rowlands spend 15 minutes or so telling us who they are, the characters they will play and generally deconstructing theatre.

It’s a bit like the old advice to speech makers and news writers: Tell ’em what you’re going to say; say it; tell ’em what you just said.

If that sounds dry, it isn’t. Hughes is such a consummate improviser and so totally in the moment that your experience with him will likely be slightly different from mine. Looking at the See Mixing page 32

As for Murdoch, he says the theatre program has come along way since he started 30 years ago with just two instructors working in regular classrooms. Back then, there was only one acting program and students had to rent out the Presentation House Theatre to put on a show.

“We had to move the tables and chairs and clear space to do something and at the end we had to move them back for the next class,” he says.

Today they have programs for acting, musical theatre and technical theatre, including two rehearsal halls and the school’s performing arts theatre, where Ring Round the Moon will be performed.

The play runs three acts and two intermissions, with each act 45 minutes long, making it longer than most plays done

by Capilano University, but Murdoch had trouble cutting the length since everything in the play is interconnected to everything else.

audience from the small thrust stage, he exclaims: “It’s like having three audiences. We could stop in the middle and swap.” Given that in another of his plays he has persuaded his audience to come on stage and play sheep, don’t think it couldn’t happen.

Because Hughes both shoves his messages in our face with projections, charts and flash cards while at the same time seeming naive and harried, it’s easy to categorize what we are seeing as low-tech, fringe theatre shtick.

And it is. At one point we are asked to close our eyes while a long scene change transpires!

But I find that whenever I think of the show, I keep coming back to how I categorized and so easily dismissed what was being introduced: the power of family, community and friendship.

What many audience members won’t know — in Canada anyway — is that Hugh Hughes is a creation, an alter ego of Shon Dale-Jones. DaleJones/Hughes has created two other plays that feature Hughes and his native Anglesey and a “documentary” that features both his real mom and actors playing other characters. In other words, it can be difficult to separate fiction from fact in Dale-Jones’ world.

We shouldn’t be surprised.

Hughes quotes Spanish filmmaker Luis Bunuel several times in Floating, telling us that imagined truths (lies) repeated often enough inform our lives and eventually become truth.

Certainly Dale-Jones and his company are halfway round the world from Anglesey with their play.

In the deceptively limited plot of Floating, Hughes is about to leave Anglesey and begin a new life when the island moves, breaking the Menai Bridge and trapping him.

The moment is represented

by Rowlands struggling to cut a piece of rope held by Hughes with blunt scissors.

The audience focuses on the comedy, the stress of whether Rowlands will get the job done while Hughes struggles to extend his speech and cover her difficulty. Only later does the metaphor of an umbilical cord and a man held back by strands of family, friends and familiarity occur.

I would love to ask DaleJones whether he is deliberately re-inventing Bunuel’s bizarre existential movie The Exterminating Angel in which dinner guests are trapped in a room for days — a trap they can leave by becoming themselves. But I have overemphasized theme. Floating is hilarious. Go, enjoy, experience — think about it after the fact.

“It’s called Side Dish, which I think is apropos because I’m going to treat it so differently from what I do that I figure if it’s a side dish, people will accept that, right?” she says.

“You order your main dish, which is your usual thing that you have, and then your side dish can be something different. So, fingers crossed.”

Gurr is nearing the end of the recording process, which is being conducted on the North Shore with David Jewer at Dream Maker Studios.

Featured musicians include guitar player David Sinclair (who’s played with K.D. Lang and toured with Sarah McLachlan for many years); percussionist Pepe Danza; and trumpet player Miguel Valdes.

“It’s going really well. I’m really happy with it so far,” she says.

Gurr anticipates Side Dish to be released by April and, as is always the case, partial proceeds from her CD sales will support a variety of animal charities, mainly SAINTS (Senior Animals in Need Today Society), based in Mission.

“I feel like everyone should give something out of their pay cheque toward a charity,” she says.

NIKOLAISEN - James William April 25, 1930 - January 20, 2011 Jim, eighty, passed away peacefully at Campbell River Hospital on Thursday, January 20, 2011. He was comforted by his wife, Jean of 56 years, his sister Doris, one of his daughters Jeannette and her husband Ray. With tremendous strength and stubbornness, he battled through extreme health conditions for over thirty years. We are very sad to see him leave but we are relieved for him as well. He joins lost loved ones in a much happier place.

Perhaps there’ll even be a Tarzan yell or two after supper now and then ... He was always the one to make you laugh no matter how bad he felt. He taught his grandchildren and children some life lessons they will never forget.

Jim’s sister and brother, brothers and sisters-in-law, wife, 5 children, sons and daughters-inlaw, 11 grandchildren and 1 grandson-in-law will miss him terribly. His family started as a result of a chance meeting at a dance in the Union Bay Hall and from there they lived in eight homes with numerous jobs from setting bowling pins to earning a Bachelors of Education. He was a man that was there for whomever needed him and provided an amazing childhood for his children. We were always out camping or building something.

He has made some wonderful friends and has a terrific extended family. We give our special thanks to Campbell River Home Support, C.R. Hospital, C.R. Home Nursing and C.R. MS Group. A private memorial will be held at home, date and time still not decided. Jim was always very passionate about his family and school. If you wish, in place of flowers send a donation to the MS Group of Campbell River, in care of Judy Spencer. Thank you to all that have helped us over the years.

BOYD - Samuel Dalton “Bud” January 5, 1922 – January 14, 2011. It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Bud will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Anne (Nancy), his daughter Martha (Boyd) Elpern, his son Brian Boyd and their families. Bud is predeceased by his parents Samuel David and Annie Elizabeth Boyd, sisters Maxine Sowdon, Dorothy Williams and brother Kenneth (Bill) Boyd. Bud was born and educated in Toronto. He spent many happy childhood years in Creemore, Ontario with family relatives. Bud served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1942 - 1946. On September 27, 1947 Bud married Elizabeth Anne Turvey in Toronto. In 1948, Bud started working as a salesman with Christie, Brown and Company.

After 7 years as Branch Manager for Christie’s in London, Ontario, Bud and his family moved to Vancouver in 1962 where he became Branch Manager of BC and the Yukon until his retirement in 1987. Bud never met a stranger. He was an avid golfer, gardener and curled for many years at Hollyburn Country Club where he and Nancy made longtime friends. In latter years, Bud’s favorite pastime was to enjoy sitting at Ambleside Beach and visiting with his many canine friends. We wish to thank the staff and caregivers at Capilano Care Center for the warm and loving care given to Bud in his final days.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 2 PM at St. Christopher’s Church, 11th Street and Inglewood, West Vancouver. Reception to follow.

The 2011 model is a beautifully crafted car that feels almost Audi-ish in terms of the quality of design and construction. Where performance is concerned, it’s closer to its Cayenne and Audi Q7 cousins, but maintains the sensibility we expect from VW vehicles.

There’s a TDI diesel engine, of course, and Volkswagen will soon bless the Touareg with its first-ever hybrid powertrain.

It is, in short, an extremely pleasant surprise, taking everything we liked about the Touareg and raising the bar about three or four notches. If you still aren’t convinced that Volkswagen should be building luxury

vehicles, this might be the one that will change your mind.

Design VW’s new design language is clean and athletic, but may be a little too plain for some tastes. The new grille looks great, cutting across the face from headlamp to headlamp, and the sculpted side panels give the SUV an athletic stance. However, the rear is just a bit too generic.

The most striking thing about the Touareg is definitely its overall shape and profile, which looks so much leaner and purposeful than last year’s model, despite slight gains in length and width. It’s helped along by a sloping roofline See Ignition page 42

both at once. However, it’s a bit disappointing that VW didn’t take a run at a dieselelectric hybrid, seeing as few automakers have its expertise.

Boasting much sportier performance than the firstgeneration Touareg, the 2011 model is clearly gunning for BMW’s X5. It’s highly responsive, and perhaps on par with the Porsche Cayenne in terms of overall handling, though it’s not as powerful.

Much of that comes from the mass that VW cut out, reducing weight by 208kg.

Perhaps the only downside with respect to performance is the stiff ride, which will be too firm for some passengers.

The Touareg is comfortable in motion, but you’ll notice long rides when the vehicle comes to a full stop.

Environment You expect a quiet cabin in a vehicle with luxury intentions, but you also expect a diesel engine to be very loud. So, it’s seriously impressive just how well the Touareg TDI dampens the noise from under the hood.

VW designers clearly paid attention to customer concerns, finding more space for everything. The front seats are roomy in all directions, while the rear seats slide and recline slightly.

There’s more cargo space in the rear, and up front the Touareg benefits from deep cupholders, a good-sized centre console, large map pockets, and an excellent

glovebox.

While upmarket models get a keyless start button, the base trim has a bulky key fob that has to be inserted fully into a socket and turned to start the engine. It’s a clumsy arrangement, and VW’s folding key would be better.

GPS navigation is standard equipment in every Touareg, and it comes with a great touchscreen instead of the control-wheel arrangements that we’re seeing in more and more vehicles. While the latter arrangement reduces glare on the LCD, touchscreens are often much easier to use.

Features Features available as options on higher trims include a power tailgate, sunroof, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, keyless start, Xenon headlamps, 12speaker sound system, backup sensors, rearview camera, and a sport suspension.

Fuel efficiency for the gas engine is rated at 12.3L/100km in the city and 8.8L/100km on the highway, while the diesel improves those figures to 11.1L/100km and 7L/100km, respectively.

Nissan brings back the GT-R’s launch control ‘feature’ for 2012 Mini Cooper for some reason.

Anyway, John didn’t get his first car until he was already famous, and for a guy with a silly haircut and a tendency to lie around in bed all day, he sure picked right.

The car in question is a bright blue 1965 Ferrari 330GT, and it’s up for auction. Expected to fetch around $170,000 and up, the star power adds a certain cachet, but it’s a beautiful car in its own right.

Lennon had other cars too, most famously a psychedelic Rolls Royce, but his car collection frankly went to hell when he had to make room for a small, very annoying Japanese hatchback.

2012 Nissan GT-R Brings Back Launch Control Many readers will remember the arrival of Nissan’s world-beating hypercar as being slightly marred by a transmissionliquidating “Easter egg.”

Basically (and don’t try this at

home, kids), you can activate a secret launch control function in early GT-Rs by putting the transmission and suspension toggles in “R”, switching the traction control to “snow”, holding your left foot on the brake and flooring the throttle.

The car will automatically hold revs at around 5000rpm, and when you take your foot off the brake, one of two things happen: either you’ll be catapulted to 100km/h in a Porsche 911-humiliating 3.2 seconds, or your transmission will explode. Also, seeing as Godzilla’s dozens of ECUs monitor everything you do and record it for posterity, the big Nissan will tattle on you to the guys at the service department, and your warranty will be voided.

Naturally, this gave rise to all sorts of people deriding Nissan on public Internet forums, claiming that this sort of Achilles heel was the reason that a Ferrari or Porsche was the superior product.

Ferrari Releases a Hatchback?

In the market for a sporty, yet practical car? Perhaps a VW GTi or Mazdaspeed3 might be on your list, or maybe you’re looking at a four-wheel-drive Impreza and wondering whether the STi version is a bit overkill.

Well, if that ain’t, then this is: a four-wheel-drive, twodoor, hatchback Ferrari FF. With 651 horsepower.

Now, there’s already a hit squad of hairy-knuckled blokes en route to my house to hit

me with a lead pipe about the kneecaps for calling Ferrari’s latest creation a “hatchback,” so let’s call it a shooting-brake.

Same thing, fancier name.

What’s important here is that this is only the second or third time Maranello’s ever popped out a three-door car, the last being the legendary 250 “Breadvan”, and it’s the first time they’ve ever done four-wheel-drive, although I’m sure some pedant with a Ferrari keychain and a Toyota Corolla is already emailing me with obscure examples to contradict everything I’ve just said.

So it’s practical. Sort of. And quite pretty. Sort of. It looks a bit like one of

Voltron’s shoes.

Lastly, it’ll tear your face off in proper Ferrari fashion: 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 335 km/h, all the while with a Shih Tzu being ping-ponged around the back like a dog-based version of squash.
