Manh Van Dam was handed the sentence Tuesday in North Vancouver provincial court after pleading guilty to producing the pills between Sept. 7 and 11, 2009. In handing down her sentence, Judge Carol Baird Ellan said she accepted that Dam was essentially a piece worker in the drug lab set up by others, who operated the pill press. Dam’s role was to take powdered ecstasy and press it into pills, which were then collected and sold by other people. The ecstasy lab — in a rented garage on Mountain See Noises page 5

A North Vancouver man is in hospital with brain injuries after being savagely beaten on a Lower Lonsdale crosswalk.

The 21-year-old and a companion were crossing the street outside a 7-Eleven convenience store at Chesterfield Avenue and West Third Street just before 11 p.m. Tuesday when a motorist passing through the intersection almost struck him, according to police. When the victim yelled at the driver, the car stopped and swung back toward the pair. The passenger got out and walked toward them, allegedly claiming to have a gun and demanding that they

empty their pockets. When the suspect produced a can of pepper spray, the men tried to flee, but he grabbed one of them and knocked him to the ground, according to police. The suspect allegedly sprayed the victim while he was down, punched him repeatedly in the head and kicked him before running away. The car also took off. The injured man was later taken to Lions Gate Hospital with cuts and bruises, a concussion and bleeding in the brain. As of Wednesday afternoon, he had still not been released.

North Vancouver RCMP are hoping public can help them track down the alleged assailant. He’s described as a Caucasian man in his late 20s or early 30s, five feet ten inches tall, skinny, with a dark brown goatee. He was wearing a black T-shirt, black hoodie, black sweat pants and a black baseball cap. The suspect was last seen running south on Chesterfield Avenue. Police believe the vehicle was an older model, grey Toyota Tercel. Investigators want to speak with anyone who saw the alleged attack, especially the driver of the car and a witness they believe copied down its licence plate. Anyone with information is asked to call the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311.
