Teen rescues abandoned 6-week kittens

TWO six-week old grey kittens are starting to play and bounce around a North Vancouver home after being rescued by a local teen who found them dumped inside a cooler bag with some food at the side of a wooded trail. Chase Long, 16, was walking down a shortcut trail that runs between East Fourth and Heywood streets on Thursday morning when he heard a hissing sound. “I thought that was weird,” he said. He looked down and saw a kitten, then spotted the cooler bag nearby — and noticed it was moving. “I realized there was another cat in the bag,” he said. Eventually the two tiny kittens allowed him to pick them up. “I thought I can’t just leave them here,” he said. Long immediately took the kittens to the nearby home of a friend, whose family has been active in helping rescue abandoned animals. Tamara Gillis, who works at a pet store and is active with the Action for Animals group, said she gave the kittens some water and some food appropriate for their tender age. See Rescue page 3

A music video parody created by four longtime North Vancouver residents appears to have struck a chord on YouTube, garnering tens of thousands of hits in a matter of days. North Vancouver Boyz, a take off of pop star Katy Perry’s California Gurls, has been viewed close to 82,000 times since it was posted last month, a large number for something locally focused. The four-minute clip, set to the tune of Perry’s hit single, reworks the lyrics and visuals to poke fun at the beer-swilling exploits of some of the community’s youth. The video follows the adventures of a group of young men as they tour the North Shore in a pick-up truck and extol the virtues of jean shorts, inexpensive beer, and a general failure to take responsibility. “I know a place where the Colts are really cheaper,” sings one character in a ﬂannel shirt and torn jeans at the opening. WHYTECLIFF Park has been a popular scuba diving spot for beginners and experts, though it has claimed the lives of both in the last three years. In November 2008, a 61 year-old diving instructor died at Whytecliff Park after being found unconscious by his students. A 20 yearold California man diving at the park got the bends (an illness resulting from rapid decompression) and was hospitalized in the same month. In February of 2008, police issued a warning to divers at the popular scuba spot, after a group of divers were nearly swept out to sea. Gillis said the kittens were very young, and were covered in ﬂeas and ear mites. On Friday, she took the pair off to the vet’s at Norgate Animal Hospital where they were cared for for most of the day. Almost a week later, the brother and sister grey tabbies are starting to get some bounce back, she said — on Monday one of the kittens even risked giving one of her golden retrievers a playful pat on the tail. Gillis said it seems that someone was hoping the kittens would be found and looked after. But she can’t really understand why they would choose to dump the kittens on the trail. “There’s tons of rescue groups and there’s the district (of North Vancouver) shelter,” she said. “There are many options.” Long said he’s stopped by to see the kittens since he found them and is happy to see them doing well. “I can understand people not having the ability to take care of them,” he said. “But the fact (they were dumped) just blocks from the shelter is kind of ridiculous.” Gillis said she plans to keep the two kittens until they are old enough to be spayed and neutered and will then make sure they are adopted by responsible owners. “We already have people who are interested in adopting them,” she said. “We’ll make sure they get forever homes.”

ICBC is warning travellers to plan ahead and drive safely during the last long weekend of summer. On average, there are 1,725 crashes resulting in 515 injuries and ﬁve deaths across the province over the Labour Day long weekend, according to the insurance corporation. Rent-cheque scams abound RCMP warn of 2 different rip-offs Jane Seyd

NORTH Vancouver RCMP are warning the public about two more Craigslist scams, after one local landlord was recently bilked out of almost $6,000. Both scams involve the fraudsters getting unwitting victims to send them money

over a wire transfer service. In one case, a local landlord was contacted by a man posing as an overseas doctor who was moving to Canada and needed an apartment to rent. The ﬁctitious doctor wired a check through Western Union to rent the suite for a year, said Cpl. Peter DeVries, spokesman for the local detachment. Once the check cleared the landlord’s bank, which typically takes anywhere from three to seven business days, the doctor claimed a family emergency, and said he needed to back out of the deal. He requested the landlord send most of

the money back, which the landlord did. A short time later, however, his bank told the landlord that the cheque was fraudulent, said DeVries. Conﬁrmation of that can take the bank up to 21 days. Since the landlord had deposited the fraudulent check, he was left responsible for repayment of the loss. In another case, a North Vancouver resident responded to a Craigslist post advertising an apartment for rent. The owner claimed he was overseas and asked for advance payment through a Western Union money transfer, said DeVries.

Fortunately, the potential renter was suspicious, and contacted the North Vancouver RCMP, who were able to conﬁrm the ad was a scam. Rental scams have been especially common in the past month, said Const. Seema Gabi of the North Vancouver detachment’s economic crime unit. Gabi said she’s heard of two cases in the past month where people posing as landlords temporarily out of the country offered to courier keys to prospective tenants — in exchange for one month’s rent. Luckily the potential tenants became suspicious and didn’t go through with the deal. Scams involving people who offer to buy used Blackberries or iPads with counterfeit bills have also surfaced recently, she said. By the time the fakes are discovered “the person’s gone,” she said. To avoid being ripped off, police warn residents doing business on Craigslist and other similar sites to never make a wire transfer payment. Wire transfers are virtually untraceable, said DeVries. Similarly, police warn to never accept a cashier’s cheque as payment. Those cheques are often frauds. Police also warn consumers to avoid any transaction where the seller wants to use an online “escrow service” as those typically turn out to be scams. But the basic warning on fraud remains the same, said Gabi — If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Those without reservations should arrive well in advance and be prepared to wait. For people heading to the United States, the Canada Border Services Agency warns that travellers need proper identification, including either a passport or enhanced driver’s licence. Children also need proper identification. Drivers should also try to avoid peak traffic times — usually in the later afternoon/early evening — and monitor border wait times on the agency’s website at www.cbsa.gc.ca.

ANDS up everyone who still believes the B.C. Liberals were not planning on introducing the HST before the provincial election. Alright Jane, Naomi, Joan and Ralph, you can put your hands down. And that leaves . . . nobody. Of course, when we say the “B.C. Liberals,” we really mean Gordon Campbell. It is quite possible that few in cabinet, let alone caucus, beyond the premier and Finance Minster Colin Hansen were privy to the briefing notes revealed Wednesday by a media FOI request. It is now clear that Hansen received a full briefing of the potential economic pros and cons of the HST on March 12, two months before polling day. The briefing was subsequently updated after Ontario adopted harmonization

with details of the federal subsidy. Hansen’s response Wednesday — “I didn’t spend a lot of time on it, actually” — begs the question: Just what was the minister responsible for B.C.’s ﬁnances doing instead? The Liberals, presumably in the forlorn hope of retaining some speck of credibility, didn’t release all of the brieﬁng notes. Many passages were whited out and six whole pages — including one dated March 12 and headed Options — were completely obscured. It is impossible to underestimate the damage that this sorry episode has done, and not just to the party. The actions of a few power-hungry men continue to tarnish democracy as an ideal. Why should any citizen be expected to exercise their right to vote for liars.

Whose media also fear to lose their audience or customers by carefully “balancing” the views of their program hosts, columnists, opinion contributors and their on-the-one-hand-onthe-other-hand editorials that end up exquisitely advising squat — all under the “human rights” commissions’ Big Brother threat of honestly speaking their minds? Whose liberal elites are

more concerned about their country’s standing in some notional international league of opinion than the “conservative” views of their own taxpayers — who actually pay the full shot, who don’t have the higher incomes, tax write-offs, indexed pensions and similar privileges of the ofﬁcially compassionate? Whose governmental bank balances are deep in red ink — can’t afford to maintain all its commitments to its own sick, young, pensioned, unemployed, homeless etc. people, yet out of its great big heart spends scores of millions processing the claims of selfseeking foreigners arriving illegally on disgusting ships? Whose rules reverse the usual onus of proof — the receiving country’s authorities must prove the refugee’s claim invalid? Whose indignation is near zero (there are just too many things to be indignant about) when some such claimants are ruled ineligible after years of costly process, are served with deportation orders, and

disappear into the woodwork by the tens of thousands? And, finally, a country that for all its many successes still harbours an inferiority complex — doesn’t have the self-confidence and selfrespect to defend its own borders from foreigners who can craft a plausibly poignant story? What do you call that country? Canada. Oh, you knew that. The claim of the most recent self-described refugees — Tamils from Sri Lanka — that they are fleeing persecution in the wake of the civil war does not move this citizen’s head or heart. The ships carrying such refugee claimants deserve nothing but the relatively lowcost remedy of a line of coast guard vessels and Canadian warships on easily arranged routine manoeuvres turning them away as they approach our waters. Any and all such ships, whatever their origin. The queue starts elsewhere. Let the adventurers

find it and get in the lineup. Millions have. Instead Compassionate Canada allows them to land in a country where the eager bureaucracies spend money we don’t have on people we don’t need. Martin Collacutt, former Canadian high commissioner to Sri Lanka and an expert who closely follows events there, may agree with little in the above. But his Fraser Institute speech last week gave hard evidence of how we’re chumps. For example, these Tamils could escape alleged persecution by fleeing to their 70 million fellow Tamils in India, 30 miles by water from Sri Lanka. So why choose distant Canada? What a surprise — because Canada provides lavish “free” social benefits. And a confirmed safe haven for aggrieved, even terrorist ethnic groups to continue hot battles in their homelands that are of about as much interest to Canadians as Brazilian farm receipts in 1924.

“Perjury fatigue” is part of the job for refugee and immigration authorities. Collacutt noted that 60 per cent of refugee claimants who say they lost their documents “miraculously found them” later when they were needed to apply for such beneﬁts. In one period, 71 per cent of the supposedly fearful claimants went back to Sri Lanka for a visit. (As of last Friday, relatively prosperous Sri Lanka’s stock market was Asia’s best performer, with a rise of 64.9 per cent in 2010.) Collacutt also questions the supposed verity that “we have international obligations” under the United Nations convention. It’s outdated and needs revision to foil people-smugglers, he thinks. The government could also use the Charter of Rights “notwithstanding” clause to override hamstringing procedures and rulings that allow abuse of the refugee ideal. “THERE are ﬁsh in the river,” the watchers have proclaimed. Only a couple of decades ago, that would have been an unspeakably obvious statement. Who would even have thought to say it? One might as likely note that there are birds in the sky, or that there are leaves on the trees, or that there are cars on the roads. So poorly have we managed our natural resources that a statement as obvious as “there are ﬁsh in the river” has become no longer obvious

at all.The estimated 30 million sockeye entering the Fraser River on their way to the spawning beds have come as a remarkable surprise — and a remarkably pleasant

one, at that. The past few years saw such a dramatic decline in sockeye numbers that, until this summer, there was much hand-wringing and gnashing of teeth over the fishery’s apparent collapse and the species’ imminent demise. It has come as a monumental surprise that, after the salmon run last year was so tenuous that the commercial fishery was never opened, this year’s run is the strongest since 1913. Not so surprising was the reaction to the surprisingly good news: joyous cries, from fishers to economists and anyone else who might make a buck off the unexpected

bounty, calling for the capture and death of as many of those 30 million salmon as possibly can be managed. Perhaps next year we will all be surprised again when the watchers proclaim, “There are no ﬁsh in the river.” We must not lose sight of the fact that the millions of salmon goosed by recent rainfall to speed their way up to their spawning beds are in no way a conﬁrmation of humanity’s stewardship of the environment, but rather are a testament to Mother Nature’s ability to overcome — at least this time — the adversity that humanity has created. that Liberal Paul Martin campaigned to scrap that clause. And it was the Liberal government that repeatedly rejected the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service’s urging that the Tamil Tigers, whose crimes, notably in Toronto, fund their Sri Lanka actions, be designated a terrorist organization. The Conservatives took CSIS’s advice.) Inevitably such discussions move to the larger issue of current immigration. Based on StatsCan’s own ﬁgures, Prof. Herbert Grubel, a “Chicago school” economist and former member of Parliament, has pointed out that immigrant incomes since 1980 have gone into reverse and are now lower than the Canadian average. We hardly need evidence — fresh proof arrives all too often, as it has in recent days — that some immigrants are a very bad ﬁt with the Canadian

constitutional ideal of “peace, order and good government.” An enlightened government would scrutinize immigrants carefully at the gate for nasty proclivities and attitudes (notably toward women and, yes, members of their own ethnic group), ﬁrmly prosecute those who pass muster if they later commit crimes, or otherwise prove unworthy to live here, and speedily return them to their home countries. There are enough bad apples in our home-grown barrel to go around without importing more. Of course there will be those who declare that the above smacks of racism. No, here’s racism — of the positive kind — that I’ll freely plead guilty to: Can anyone explain why it’s so very, very rare for Filipinos and ethnic Japanese to make trouble, commit crimes, and otherwise appear negatively in Canada’s media?

Lynn Creek Fish Habitat Enhancement Work

The District of North Vancouver is installing fish habitat enhancement structures within Lynn Creek as part of the its ongoing habitat restoration and enhancement work. The work will take place from September 7 - September 15. The objective of this in-stream project is to increase habitat diversity and create low-velocity zones for fish refuge in the lower reaches of Lynn Creek by constructing large woody debris (LWD) complexes and placing boulder clusters. The habitat structures and boulder clusters will be placed in Lynn Creek between the Keith Rd. and Main St. bridge crossings. INQUIRING REPORTER A new bylaw banning smoking in parks and on beaches in the City of Vancouver came into effect on Wednesday. Two North Shore municipalities already have similar bans. In West Vancouver it’s illegal to smoke in any park with a playground, concession or other activity, while in the District of North Vancouver it’s illegal to smoke within six meters of a playground, concession or other activity. After the North Shore medical health ofﬁcer presented the case for a uniform approach to smoking across the North Shore, City of North Vancouver council voted to consider a similar bylaw. — Tessa Holloway

IT’S an all too familiar Catch-22: to get a job, experience is needed; but, it’s impossible to get experience without first having a job. No matter how much training one undertakes, it’s next to impossible to launch a career in any field unless some professional experience is gained first. To ease the tricky transition for those interested in pursuing a career in theatre, a group of local veterans have launched Awkward Stage Productions Society, a non-profit youth theatre company committed to providing real life performance and production opportunities to rising stars. “We wanted to create a company that would lend to youth, having opportunities between the training that they do, so whether that’s in high school or other post-secondary education . . . and a professional career in theatre,” says Cara Tench, Awkward Stage’s co-founding artistic associate and vice-president of communications. The company is currently engaged in rehearsals for their inaugural production, the musical 13, at this year’s Vancouver International Fringe Festival, Sept. 9-19, at the Firehall Arts Centre. “It really is amazing,” says Tench. “I really just feel like it’s a dream come true, it’s just exactly what I want to be doing.”

Tench, who also teaches dance and musical theatre at West Vancouver’s Collingwood School, launched Awkward Stage with peers Andy Toth and Corwin Ferguson. They were invited to present a show at this year’s Fringe Festival and viewed it as the perfect opportunity to get Awkward Stage up and running. The society was ofﬁcially incorporated this summer. Youth are involved at all levels, from sitting on its board of directors, to being involved as actors, musicians, technical crew members and production assistants. “We’ve really allowed them the opportunity to bring all of their ideas to the table,” says Tench. Rehearsals for 13, which features music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown and book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn, got underway Aug. 2 and are held Mondays to Fridays. The musical depicts a young hero named Evan who’s tying to plan the best bar mitzvah ever after moving from big city New York to a small Indiana town. In his quest to be popular, he faces a number of challenges — cliques, gossip, bullies and divorcing parents —many of which comprise the typical high school experience. “I feel like it’s just such a fun thing for Awkward Stage to start with, a show about teenagers, because 13 is such an awkward stage,” says Tench. “It’s just this perfect mix of being able to deal with teen angst through our growing pains of starting a company. It just seemed like a really fun story to tackle.” Tench is directing Awkward Stage’s production. More than 80 youth auditioned and 24 were chosen, ranging in age from 12 to 18. “We’ve really been able to handpick some of the strongest youth talent in the Lower Mainland,” says Tench. The youth are split into two casts, junior and senior, based on experience.

“The most inspiring part is to see how much the cast members nurture and encourage each other,” says Tench, referencing the double casting that has resulted in a unique mentorship situation. “There are no uncomfortable teen issues in the process as they are all so invested in the ﬁnal product and want each other to really succeed.” The two casts will alternate performances through the run of the show. “It’s an incredibly inspiring group of young people who are just so thrilled and so passionate about theatre and performing and really strong triple-threats. Really, there’s just so much that they’re capable of,” says Tench. Evan is being played by 17-year-old Vancouver resident Zach Wolfman in the senior cast and by 13year-old West Vancouver resident Alex Lara, a student at Collingwood, in the junior cast. “He has a really amazing stage presence. He’s only going into Grade 8 this year but he is incredibly strong,” says Tench, of Lara. “He’s a really fun positive kid who tends to break out into hip-hop dancing whenever he has a spare moment,” she adds. There are a number of other North Shore students involved in the production, including actors: Yoav Lai, 15, from Collingwood; Fiona McIntyre, 17, from Handsworth secondary and Julie Cooper, 15, from Seycove secondary. Recent Sutherland secondary graduate Tessa Gunn is serving as a stage manager. Ashlee Kim, 17, a student at Handsworth, is playing the role of Kendra in the junior cast. “She’s very caring and naive and she believes in rainbows and sunshine. Artists inspired by nature show new work ■ Inspired By Nature: The Parks of West Vancouver, Ferry Building Gallery, Sept. 3-26.

THE Lighthouse Park Preservation Society in partnership with the Ferry Building Gallery is hosting an exhibition, entitled Inspired By Nature: The Parks of West Vancouver, beginning tonight and running through September.

Featuring the works of 22 local artists, the exhibition will showcase the natural

beauty and riches of the region, as well as draw attention to the delicate balance and diligence involved in the necessary stewardship of the parks. Look at any local map and you will see the builtup areas dotted with small green shapes. Precious islands. This is how residents tend to think of the public lands which serve as retreats from the surrounding hard surfaces and the noisy bustle of city life. But these parks are not just pretty places for relaxation. As remnants of the native forest, they have remained vital parts of the larger natural environment.

They have lives of their own that are one step removed from recreational pursuits. It is in this role, as reservoirs of the natural world, that the parks are beginning to fail. The native plants, along with the insects, animals and birds that depend on them, are vanishing. This is partly due to pressure from a growing population and a changing climate, but it’s mostly due to careless use and isolation. Along with other stewardship groups, the Lighthouse Park Preservation Society is working to turn things around. When public land is treated as wasteland, when there is vandalism and littering, encroachment and tree cutting, the society works to raise the status of the woodland parks so that these fragile places will receive more respect. When lands are threatened by invasive species spreading from gardens or from the dumping of garden debris, Society members spread the word through education and ﬁght back with work parties to pull ivy, broom and lamium. They also grow native plants for restoration projects. The exhibition is timely as 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity, whose mission statement reads, “You are an integral part of nature; your fate is tightly linked with biodiversity, the huge variety of other animals and plants, the places they live and their surrounding environments, all over the world.” Working in a variety of mediums, the following artists will demonstrate their passion for parks and address the challenges of parks preservation: Andrea Barber, Liz Byrd, Susanna Blunt, Ray Bradbury, Mary-Jean Butler, Toni Cavelti, Barrie Chadwick, Mary Comber

THE nude oxfords under the table scream luxe, but no one would ever guess that Faranak daCosta’s black blazer cost $5 at a thrift store.

BIG NIGHT AT THE MOVIES West Vancouverite Kristy Brinkley and Lorraine Kitsos, creator of Redﬁsh Kids Clothing, received an unexpected thrill when they took in a recent showing of Eat Pray Love, starring Julia Roberts. For the friends and business partners, the real star of the show was their Swing Dress (above), which made a surprise appearance in one scene. But that, she says, is the essence of a stylist’s talent. Her favourite fashion moment was wearing another five dollar item — a ball gown — with $500 shoes. “Anything goes,” daCosta says about fashion, which is why she believes that finding your personal style can be so overwhelming for North Shore residents, who feel they have to be good at everything. Deep Cove’s daCosta thinks personal style is important because of the artistry in fashion: “It’s almost like music. Music is an international language, same with fashion. It’s so important. And that is the first thing that you come out of your house and you face the world in, and how could you be blaze about it?” A stylist’s mission, she believes, is “to give an outfit personality.” And daCosta should know. She has lived fashion her whole life, and has spent time abroad learning about the art. She wrote a fashion column for three years, and was a stylist to celebrities such as Michael Bublé and Chad Kroeger. Now she’s taken on a new challenge: styling everyday people. “It’s more challenging, and it’s a different avenue for me. It feels and fits right, right now for me.” Batting her blue mascara-ed eyelashes, she adds that it’s much more gratifying to make everyday, ordinary people look extraordinary. This is the concept behind Restyle Today, daCosta’s new business that offers styling services with a personal touch. The starting point for any customer is to meet daCosta for coffee and chat, so that any selections will be tailored to hobbies, interests, lifestyle, likes, and dislikes. As a mother of a new baby, daCosta says she understands the perspective of people who don’t have enough time to dedicate towards figuring out a wardrobe. ﬁnding pieces that will last through the ebbs and tides of fads. She gives pencil skirts, (quality) leopard print and oxfords as examples. Her favourite places to shop on the North Shore are Moulé, Aritzia and Wear Else (all at Park Royal) and various thrift stores. Though a restyle means clients will

have to part with some closet clutter (we’re looking at you, Uggs), daCosta can also help breathe new life in to older items, sometimes through tailoring, or simply by suggesting a modern accent. “When something is just truly cool and hip and just beautiful, why take it out of your closet?” So far, Restyle clients have included accountants, pharmacists, teachers, and 16-year-olds, but daCosta feels prepared to take on any fashion challenge. She would especially like to work towards abolishing jeans with studs and over-the-top detailing and overly pointy-toed shoes for men. “I think, to me, that’s the weapon of mass destruction. There are no other weapons anywhere else.” Being a personal stylist invites many challenges, including fear of decluttering and catty friends, but daCosta has faced equally difﬁcult celebrities and average joes. Estée lip colour stays in place A good lipstick or lip pencil should go on easily, stay in place, and keep lips moist — oh, and it should look pretty when wielded publicly.

Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-in-Place lip line hits two of four targets. The online ratings on the makeup giant’s website would tell you the lipstick ($30) gets 4.1 out of 5 stars, but I would give it 3.6. I tried it in “Stay Ginger,” and at ﬁrst I was surprised by how dark it came out. Though the application was easy and felt light, my lips immediately dried out. An unexpected bonus was

my bag while on the bus or in a restaurant. The lip pencil ($22), 08 Spice in this case, was subtle by

contrast and when applied under the lower lip line enhanced fullness. It has stylish goldcapped ends and serves a double purpose, since a lipstick brush is concealed under the second cap. The lip pencil got 4.5 on the website, which seems accurate. After about an hour — or one doughnut and a coffee later — the colours softened while staying ﬁrmly in place. The lipstick still makes my lips dry, but maybe with an initial layer of chapstick I’d rate it higher. Park Royal unveils smartphone app WITH 1.2 million square feet of retail, it’s hard to know exactly what is at Park Royal.

Things are always changing (did you know the new Gymboree is open?), and sometimes it’s hard for shoppers to keep up. All that is about to change now that the mall has released a new app for smartphones. The app, called Shop Park Royal, is compatible with iPhones, Blackberries, and Androids. Shop Park Royal features an events section, information on where to ﬁnd products and deals, hours of operation, a map of Park Royal, as well as other features.

If you had the app, for example, you might already have known about the shopping night for teens on Aug. 27, which featured live dance performances, free limo rides, free food, and a ﬂash mob. It’s not too late to stay ahead. Downloading the app now means that smartphone users will be right in step with the opening of Freedman Shoes in November, and H&M in late October. very oblivious to what’s around her. She’s really fun,” says Kim of her character. Kim has had an interest in performance since early childhood, donning a tutu and putting on plays in her living room as early as age two. “Every time I’d hear music, I’d just start dancing,” she says. “Ever since that, being on stage is my second home. It’s where I smile, it’s where I’m comfortable, it’s where I belong. When you have those three traits, it’s not just a hobby anymore, it’s a passion,” she adds. Kim has worked with StageCraft Theatre School and Second Avenue Studios. It was through her involvement with Arts Umbrella that she heard about Awkward Stage’s production of 13. “What started out as a musical production, is like a personal journey to me now. We can all relate to the script, every line in the book, we can all remember what it was like to say that at 13,” she says.

Tench has been incredibly amazing to work with, says Kim. “It doesn’t matter if you make 100 mistakes a day, you just know that it’s okay to make mistakes around her because she’ll just, no matter what, support you,” she says. Kim credits her involvement in the production with having helped cement her career path. While she’s always had a strong attraction to theatre, she was leaning more towards pursuing a career as a writer. “Awkward Stage Productions, it’s helped me ﬁnd what I want to do in life and this is what I want to do,” she says. Following its run at the Fringe, Tench hopes to remount 13 elsewhere in the Lower Mainland. They also hope to organize some cabaret-style evenings, giving youth an opportunity to work on monologues and songs as well as gain some experience with auditioning. Next year, they plan to present another musical. “The ball is really rolling and we’re getting such great support from the community so I know that there will be opportunities to do all those things,” she says. “Onwards and upwards — tons more shows. There’s no stopping us now.”

to talk overly much with his hands. The Euro film style, however, Clooney has embraced. There is no thudding music to propel us on, only a haunting, minimalist score by Herbert Gronemeyer. The tension builds in near-silence, which only highlights Jack’s solitude. This absence of bombast is distinctly anti-Hollywood, as is the film’s slow pace and its full-frontal nudity (particularly in one redlit, red-hot love scene). Every girl is a Bond babe, but the film is more Bonanza than Bond: director Anton Corbijn (Control) has compared his film to a western in which a stranger comes into a small town, connects with a few locals, only to have his past catch up with him in a violent way. Adapted from the 1990 book, A Very Private Gentleman, by Martin Booth, with beauteous cinematography by Martin Ruhe, overall The American fails to engage. We know nothing about Jack — and that is the point, I suppose — but without some clues from his past we have only a tepid desire to see Jack get out of this thing alive. In the film, Father Benedetto mentions that Americans have contempt for history; ironically, a little more history would’ve saved The American.

IN 1910, British naval ofﬁcer Robert Scott assembled a team of professionals and set off on the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole. Aboard the ship was Canadian physicist Charles Seymour “Silas” Wright.

Arriving in January 1912, Scott discovered that Roald Amundsen’s Norwegian expedition made it ﬁrst, becoming the ﬁrst explorer to reach the South Pole. Scott’s team turned back for England but he and four others never made it home due to starvation, exhaustion and extreme cold. One hundred years later, New Zealand-born, Whistler, B.C. based writer and editorial cartoonist Adrian Raeside seeks to expose unknown truths about the ill-fated exploration in his book, Return to Antarctica. With a personal connection to the expedition, Raeside uses his grandfather Silas Wright’s personal letters and diaries to retell the tale of the 1910 Scott Expedition. “I was used to growing up surrounded by all the photographs and artifacts,” Raeside recalls. “I took it for granted, it was part of the family. It wasn’t until later as I got older, after we’d moved to

editorial cartoons helped him retell the story of Robert Scott’s expedition, he says. “With an editorial cartoon, you take fact, you look at what’s happening, you look at it sideways and you present it in a slightly different way, but it’s still fact,” he says. “To me, I didn’t start out looking to trash anyone but I sort of wanted to look at it from a different point of view with the information that I had in my possession.” Raeside is currently working on a Return to Antarctica documentary based on footage he collected during his trip and artifacts recovered from his grandfather’s collection. The documentary is another medium to tell the story of Robert Scott’s team members who have been left out of historical accounts for so long, he says. “Historians have overlooked the fact that it was an incredible tale of survival,” Raeside says.

THE main party of the Scott Expedition gathered together for a photo at Cape Evans, 1911. Canada, that I’d realized that the story was actually quite different form the one I’d been lead to believe from popular accounts.” Raeside inherited the Canadian scientist’s papers and diaries from the 1910 expedition after his grandfather passed away in 1975. Discovering details that have been missed in popular historical accounts, Raeside used photographs, letters, diary entries and other artifacts to piece together the story told by Silas Wright so many years ago. “I wanted to set the story straight from the point of view of someone who was there and

not historians who were writing third or fourth-hand,” he says. In Return to Antarctica, Raeside documents a story different from the Scottpraising accounts most commonly circulated. According to Silas Wright’s accounts, Scott had learned all the wrong things about the Antarctic when he ﬁrst traveled there in 1901. “The thing that most surprised me was that Scott was so pig-headed and refused to take advice from anyone who had an opposing view to how he was doing things,” Raeside says. “It seemed staggering that he had an unbelievable belief

in his own abilities, which were minimal.” Discovering new facts about the expedition, Raeside travelled to Antarctica in 2008 to retrace the steps of the Scott expedition team. In Return to Antarctica, Raeside recounts his own experiences, reﬂecting on the strength and tenacity of the team members like his grandfather who survived harrowing conditions. “It’s like having only four pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and 52 years later, you ﬁnd all the other pieces of the puzzle and you can put it together and see the whole all of a sudden,” Raeside says of his trip south. “For me,

what was most striking was that they spent three years in such dreadful conditions in this hut that is still standing today.” “To have that experience is great,” he adds. “With my connection to the expedition, it just made me realize that these people were incredibly tough. The fact that only ﬁve people died is amazing.” Aside from writing, Raeside is also a well-known editorial cartoonist. His comic strip, “The Other Coast,” combines environmental and political issues with comedy and has appeared in over 150 newspapers worldwide. The skills needed to produce

CHAPMAN - Audrey Jean Audrey Chapman (nee Williams) passed away peacefully and quietly August 26, 2010 in Lions Gate Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur (1967). Left to miss her are daughter Carol Forrester, granddaughters: Seanna (Wallace) Koopmans and Tori (Mike) Dolmans, son Bob (Agnes) Chapman, grandsons Spencer and Troy Chapman. She was the much loved Great Grandma (“GG”) of great-grand-daughters Emily and Charlotte Koopmans and Kailannie Dolmans and great-grandson Makaio Dolmans. She also leaves behind sister Lois and brother Ted. Audrey was born the year 1923 in South Vancouver and lived her entire life in the Lower Mainland, with the past 64 years in West Vancouver. After working in the placement office of MacMillan Bloedel for many years, Audrey was blessed with an early, healthy and active retirement. She enjoyed travel, bridge games, her many friends, and the camaraderie of the West Van Seniors Centre. Audrey was a proponent of physical activity and could always been seen doing her beloved walks on the West Vancouver seawall. Above all time spent with her family, especially the celebrations, meant everything to her. Many thanks to Dr. Sugar and the Palliative Care staff at Lions Gate Hospital for your kind and considerate assistance. No service by request. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, or the charity of your choice. A private gathering will be held at a later date.

LOUGHLAN Duane Douglas (‘‘Red’’) June 9, 1936 - August 30, 2010 Red, fondly remembered by his friends, passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital on August 30, 2010. He was predeceased by his mother and father. Red had many interests and was an avid reader. He was a member of, and retired from the Telecommunications Workers Union. Red was also very active at Unit 45, Army and Navy Club. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A service will be held at Boal Chapel, First Memorial on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 2:00pm.

RYBCHINSKY - Alice July 26, 1915 - August 20, 2010 Alice is the oldest of four children born to pioneer parents John and Mary Rybchinsky in a mixed Ukrainian farming community several miles out of Wakaw in northern Saskatchewan. She lost her parents, her sister Ann, her brother Peter, her brother-in-law Matt, her niece Bev. She is survived by her brother Stan (Jessie) their children Sandra (Colin) Brian (Wilma) their children Wyatt, Tanner, Cale and Alex, her niece Diane and her children Cynthia (Lennie) their children Caylen and Connor, and Scott and Michelle. A service will be held on September 4th at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses at 2626 Mountain Highway, Lynn Valley, North Vancouver, B.C. at 2 pm.

HETHERINGTON Carol Kathleen

With deep sadness, the family of Carol Kathleen Hetherington (née Crawford) announces her sudden passing, after a short battle with cancer. She passed away on Friday Aug 27th, 2010 at the age of 74 in Lion’s Gate Hospital with her sons at her side. Lovingly remembered by sons Alan (Consola) and Paul (Jennifer), granddaughters Laysla and Ailie, and many friends in the community and overseas, Carol was pre-deceased by her loving husband Leslie in May of this year and her brothers Ronnie and Fraser Crawford. Born February 28th, 1936 in Giffnock, Scotland to Charles and Mary Crawford (née Fraser). The daughter of a furrier, Carol and her three brothers, Ronnie, Fraser and Alan, grew up in Glasgow. Her father died when she was an adolescent so Carol learned as a young woman what it meant to support a family. She completed secretary college before leaving for Canada and arrived in April 1958 on the Empress of Britain. In Toronto she quickly became an avid car rally enthusiast and even rallied Mini Coopers right across the country. She met her husband Leslie at a car event and they were married August 10th, 1962 in Toronto followed by a lovely Bermudian honeymoon. They had their first child Alan in Toronto in 1965 and in 1968 the family moved to North Vancouver where Paul was born in 1969. Throughout the years of raising her children Carol created a loving and supportive foundation for the family. She worked close to home at Windsor Secondary School, first in the cafeteria where she was a big hit with all the kids, then later at the Learning Assistance Centre with special needs children in science and math studies. She was on many community volunteer committees and managed her sons’ soccer teams. Carol thoroughly enjoyed participating as a member of the Mount Seymour Lion’s Club and the Deep Cove Yacht Club and she loved singing in the Village Voices Choir, proudly performing in 1986 for Vancouver’s World Expo. Carol was a voracious reader of novels, and a fan of crosswords and puzzles. She enjoyed camping, boating and car trips with family, and cruises with her husband. For the past five years Carol has been a pillar of strength in providing support for her ailing husband Leslie. Her devotion and sense of putting others before herself will be remembered as a hallmark of inspiration to her family and friends. Carol’s kindness, loving nature and ready smile will be missed by all. A public memorial service will be held at Deep Cove Yacht Club, 4420 Gallant Avenue, North Vancouver at noon on Sunday, Sept. 12th. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the BC Lung Association.

MAPLETON, Nora Elaine (Bettie) passed away peacefully in Lions Gate Hospital on Tuesday August 24th at the age of 90, following a brief illness. Predeceased by her husband David H. Mapleton in 1992, Bettie is survived by her brother C. William Evans of Calgary; daughter Marjorie and grand-dog Cefyn; son David A., daughter-in-law Lorraine, grandchildren Christopher and Kelsey and grandson-in-law Jeff; and nieces and nephews. Bettie was born in Vernon, where she met David H, of Telkwa, BC, who was attending the military training camp. They married in 1944 and in1951, moved to North Vancouver where, together, they raised their family, made lifelong friends and over the years enjoyed traveling to many destinations. Throughout her life, Bettie put her numerous creative talents to the benefit of various community organizations and individuals. When it came to her family and friends, our Mum’s thoughtfulness, generosity and love knew no bounds. She will be deeply missed. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of 6 East LGH, and especially Dr. Paul Sugar and the Palliative Care team for making her final days comfortable and dignified. A private family service to celebrate her life was held on Friday August 27th. In lieu of flowers, Bettie would have preferred that you get together with family and/or friends, enjoy a nice bottle of wine, and to raise your glass in honour of her long and meaningful life. NAHANEE, Harold Martin Jr. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Martin Nahanee Jr. Harold was born November 2, 1953 and died peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital on August 30, 2010 after battling cancer for length of time. Harold will be deeply missed by his children Harold Nahanee III (Chrystal), Clinton “Kyle” Nahanee (Donna), Brandon Nahanee (Elizabeth), Nicole Bartleman & Laura Elliott; his brothers Allen Nahanee (Janine), Leo Nahanee, Jeff Nahanee (Carolyn) & Henrico Antone; sister Cheyenne Nahanee (Darren). Grandchildren Peyton Nahanee, Keenan Nahanee, Kale Nahanee, Litonya Nahanee, Quentin Nahanee, Marcus Nahanee, Kathleen NahaneeJacobs, Genesee NahaneeJacobs, Talon Bartleman, Emma Bartleman, Sara Bartleman & Madeline Elliott-Harris. Harold was always willing to volunteer and help with the Squamish Nation Teams for lacrosse from minors to senior clubs over the years this made him very proud especially when he got to see his family members excelling in an organized sport. He was also active with his family teachings with the culture travelling throughout the lower mainland, up & down the coast and through Washington State meeting new friends, family and more importantly maintaining lifetime friendships. His legacy to his family is that he was an avid fan of lacrosse, football and soccer. He had a great sense of humour and his presence will be missed by his Squamish Nation families at community gatherings. A Prayer & Funeral Service will be held at the Chief Joe Mathias Centre, 100 Capilano Road, North Vancouver, BC on Thursday, September 2nd. at 7:00 p.m. and Friday, September 3rd, at 10:00 a.m.

SMITH, Wallace E. 1923-2010

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our family patriarch. Wallace was born in Perth N.B. and grew up in Fredericton. Wallace joined the RCAF in 1941 and went overseas from 1942-1945. Upon his return, he claimed his sweetheart (Marian Caverhill) and they married in 1946. Wallace worked for H.J. Heinz for 37 years until his retirement in 1982. Due to promotions from Salesman in N.B. to Sales Manager for Western Canada, the family kept moving west from Fredericton to Moncton, then to London Ont. (1962) and to North Vancouver B.C (1969). After retiring in 1982, Wallace and Marian spent 25 winters in Lake Havasu, Arizona and travelled or cruised to many other parts of the world. Wallace was happiest spending time with his family and puttering at home in his garden or at the Glen near Mt. Baker. He loved a good game and a good laugh. Wallace will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by family and friends. He leaves behind Marian (his wife of 64 years); children Don, Kathy (David), Jan (Doug) and Carol (Pierre); Grandchildren Cameron (Sherry), Andrea (Scott), Megan and Craig and great grand children Haley and Nathan “Wallace“. Many thanks to his compassionate caregivers at home and at Lions Gate Hospital. A Service Celebrating Wallace’s life will be held at Highlands United Church, 3255 Edgemont Blvd, N. Van. on Tuesday September 7th at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society greatly appreciated.

STEVENSON - George William George, born at home on February 27, 1917 in Harding, Manitoba, died peacefully August 29, 2010 as his family lovingly said goodbye. “We love you Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa”. George was predeceased by his beloved wife Irene in 1973, and his brother Harold. He leaves behind his loving companion Joyce Borrie. George is survived by his son Dave (Sue), grandchildren Amy (Jason), Matt, Sam, Jesse and Aaron, great grandchildren Callen and Koen, brother Gordon (Jean) and extended family. George grew up farming in Manitoba. He arrived in Vancouver in 1948 and built a career in building supplies in West Vancouver. With his amazing knowledge, he helped the builders and home handymen create fine homes on the North Shore for 34 years. On his retirement George spent fifteen years as a volunteer driving for the West Vancouver Seniors Centre, honored at his second retirement with a lifetime membership. As a youth, George was an accomplished athlete in hockey and baseball; he won curling, lawn bowling and golf competitions over many years. George was a strong, quiet, caring man who lived at home until his health failed in the last month of his life. George was a remarkable man. He made many friends and lived a life of service to his community. A memorial celebration will be held Friday September 3, 2010 in the Spirit Room, West Vancouver Community Centre, at 2:00 pm. We will share of our love for this man and tell ‘George stories’ to honour his life.

Luxury sedan a class act AS luxury cars go, it might be impossible to do better than the 2011 BMW 7-Series sedan, which offers one of the most complete and satisfying experiences of any vehicle on the road.

The only question is, where are you sitting? If you’re behind the wheel most of the time, then the base 750i is all you’ll need and want, boasting a ton of features and excellent performance at a “reasonable” price (for this class of car) of $108,600. However, if you’re more likely to be found relaxing in the rear seats while someone else drives, that just won’t do — you’re going to want to spend an extra $8,000 for the long-wheelbase 750Li, which increases the wheelbase and rear passenger space by 14

centimetres. At that point, the 7-Series isn’t just a luxury car — it’s a limousine. Audi and Lexus also have long-wheelbase versions of their ﬂagship sedans, the A8 and LS, respectively. However, while the redesigned A8 is an impressive vehicle, Audi’s brand doesn’t offer the prestige and status of BMW. As for the Lexus, it’s designed more for people who want to blend into the crowd — a stark contrast to the attentiongrabbing 7-Series. The closest competitor is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which has as much star power as the BMW, but isn’t as well-balanced or as good a value. Can you do better than the 750Li? Possibly, if you’re willing to spend a lot more. For an extra

$15,700, the ActiveHybrid 7 brings fuel-saving hybrid technology to the 7-Series, whereas the $186,000 760Li swaps in a 6.0-litre V-12 engine for staggering performance. But the question remains: where are you sitting? While the environmentally conscious will appreciate the hybrid’s 10.2-litre/100 kilometres fuel efﬁciency (combined city and highway), the V-12 seems a bit unnecessary for a chauffeured vehicle. It makes more sense to stick with the 750Li and also pick up a Z4 roadster, or — if you’re so inclined — donate the extra $70,000 to a worthy cause. I drove the latest 750Li across Los Angeles and San Diego, and came away completely impressed. It’s one of the greatest luxury sedans on the market — bar none. ■ Design The 750Li maintains the curves of its much-maligned predecessor, but steps back from the odd and unsettling proportions to take on a shape and proﬁle more in line with past 7-Series designs. You can still see elements of the criticized Chris Bangle styling, but they no longer compromise the overall beauty of the car. Instead, they give it a slightly eccentric feel that helps it to stand out on a crowded street. ■ Performance Driving this vehicle on busy California freeways posed no issues, allowing me to pass other cars with ease.

Passengers will have little reason to complain when the 750Li is in Sport mode, but in Comfort mode it’s even better, delivering unbelievable ride quality and completely soaking up bumps and potholes. ■ Environment As noted previously, the 750Li adds 14 cm to the wheelbase, all of which benefits rear passengers. The only downside is the large drivetrain tunnel that prevents a flat floor, compromising legroom for the middle passenger. BMW’s iDrive all-in-one controller gets better with every redesign and now includes dedicated buttons for oft-used functions, but the benefits are still debatable. There are too many cool features to mention, but some of the most notable include adaptive LED brakelights that glow brighter when more braking force is applied, and options such as airplanelike reading lamps for the rear seats, the Night Vision system, massaging front and rear seats and heads-up display with integrated navigation prompts. ■ Thumbs up Superb balance of performance and comfort; extensive list of standard and optional features. ■ Thumbs down Not for the average consumer. ■ The bottom line As good as it gets — the benchmark in this class.

AUDI A8L: Soon to arrive in Canada, the longwheelbase version of Audi’s A8 will likely cost more than the standard model’s $99,200 price tag. Redesigned for 2010, Audi’s all-wheel-drive ﬂagship sedan will give the 750Li a run for its money, but falls short on the status-symbol meter.

LEXUS LS: The long-wheelbase version of the LS starts at $103,150 when equipped with a 4.6-litre V8 producing 357 h.p. and 344 foot-pounds of torque, and tops out at $119,950 for the hybrid version. The LS is a good deal relative to its competition, but lacks the driving prowess and panache of the 7-Series.

MERCEDES-BENZ S-Class: The gas-electric S400 Hybrid is the starting point for the S-Class line-up, priced at $105,900 and powered by a 3.5-litre V-6 with 295 h.p. and 284 foot-pounds of torque. The SClass doesn’t come in standard and long-wheelbase versions, simply because there’s no need. With a wheelbase almost as long as the 750Li’s, there’s plenty of space for passengers to stretch out.

population lacks the density to make transportation styled on the European model work. I would argue that the people of the West Coast are as dense as you could possibly hope for. Hemmed in by mountains and sea (which are both nice to look at but do get in the way rather), Vancouver doesn’t need just cleaner vehicles to commute in, it needs more viable alternatives to driving a car with any kind of powertrain, be it Electric, Bio-diesel or Hybrid. Possibly Hover might be acceptable. Until such time, I remain a weekend driver and a weekday cycling commuter, braving the homicidal maniacs from Monday to Friday (I’ve nick-named my bike the Charles Bronson). Sure, it’s kept me from turning into a ginger version of the Simpson’s Comic Book Store Guy (Worst. Belt-line. Ever.), and sure, one day I hope to have muscle deﬁnition in a way other than looking the word “muscle” up in the dictionary. However, even with all the issues of health, pollution, and trafﬁc congestion, I pick cycling over driving to work for just one very good reason. Commuting ain’t driving.

up with a liver the size of a truck tire. So too for the rest of us, with our various jobs (or careers, if you want to get fancy about it), milling slowly from the suburbs to the city in long streams of trafﬁc. On a dull and rainy day, with the brake lights of the car in front multiplied into myriad starbursts of red by the raindrops, and the prospect of nothing but trafﬁc reports that are so repetitive, bleak and depressing, you’d think they were penned by Samuel Beckett, it’s enough to make you quit the vice presidency of the company and move to Saltspring to grow soybeans and collect socially liberal bumper stickers on your Volvo. Oh sure, there are alternatives to the daily gas-brakehonk. For one thing, you could jump on your bicycle, just like in those halcyon college days, arriving to work with a healthy glow and perhaps just a little environmental smugness, rather than in a tailgater’s funk. However, there are a few problems with this solution: for one thing, that healthy glow is usually accompanied by a sheen of sweat which transforms the air of eco-superiority into an air of just plain b.o. Secondly, and I speak from experience here, riding a bicycle in Vancouver is a little like painting yourself in barbeque sauce, tucking a sprig of parsley in your hair and then running naked into the Roman Colosseum during Big Cats Week. It’s not paranoia: everyone out there really is trying to kill you. Speaking of body-odor and homicidal-mania, let’s examine public transportation for a moment. TransLink would have you believing that they’ve re-created the Jetson’s, where smiling bus drivers will whisk you to your destination in a jiffy with jolly passengers smiling and chatting along the way. Instead we wait around in the rain to be crammed onto smelly steamboxes where everyone sits in stony silence, concentrating hard on not making eye-contact. Silence, that is, unless of course somebody’s cellphone rings, in which case you may be collaterally involved in a high-volume information session about what Jessica’s been doing with Mark, why Chelsea is such a witch (and I don’t mean “witch”) and what sensitive bit of anatomy Krystynwith-two-Y’s has had pierced/tattooed/enhanced now. Alternately, you might witness a bit of street theatre as the twitchy gentleman at the front has a spirited conversation with himself, or perhaps listen in as two dear little old ladies have a slightly horrifying hard-of-hearing discussion forum about “those kind of people, ooo-they’re-not-like-us.” Also, if you’ve never experienced the unpleasantness of

what can only be politely described as “seat-overflow” — a 30-minute ride with someone sitting not just beside you, but a little bit on you — then you have been truly blessed by the gods of transportation, and I suggest that you make a small sacrifice on their behalf. Perhaps something like sprinkling some roofing nails along Howe Street. However, while both self-propelled and public commuting have their disadvantages, both are much better than sitting — again — stuck in traffic, glowering at the person in front of you as though willing their fuel tanks to explode, ruining the planet with the fumes from your vehicle, wasting your life listening to inane radio broadcasts, lowering your life expectancy with inactivity and stress, and just generally being miserable. As our population continually increases (especially with what Jessica and Mark have been up to) things are bound to get worse out there on the roads. Single-passengeroccupancy vehicles are the chariots of idiocy when it comes to getting to work, and while it might help to drive a hybrid or an all-electric vehicle in terms of air pollution, it eases congestion not a jot. Be aware that city planners aren’t moving to make things easier for you either. Current thinking is shifting away from improving motor-vehicle flow to the exact opposite. I always thought the not-quite-synchronization of the traffic lights along Hornby was just carelessness, but it may well be a plot to keep me out of my car. If car-commuting is made easier by increasing the number of roads, the number of vehicles on those roads will soon expand to clog them again, and again, and again. But here’s technology swooping in to save the day with laser-guided cruise control, smaller and safer vehicles, and the concept of cars “talking” to each other via GPS. “In the future,” so say the men and women with white coats, thick glasses, and social ineptitude, “Cars will form into long trains of vehicles, all positionally linked to avoid the ‘slinky’ effect that ripples down the line when somebody up at the front taps their brakes.” Just think, you’d putter down the on-ramp, merge into line and then put the car on auto-drive for the long commute into the city, leaving you free to read the enewspaper, take a refreshing nap or knit a scarf. Great, but what about getting off that freeway? Increased arterial flow might be great, but the side-road capillaries only can absorb so many vehicles, and you end up with bottle-necking again. Also, my automatic spell-check just changed ìcapillariesî into ìcaterpillarsî, so how comfortable would you be, trusting a computer to not develop a slight glitch and fling you off the road into the Blue Wall of Death? There are those who still think that Canada’s sprawling
