The collision happened June 16 shortly after midnight in the 8000-block of Cypress Bowl Road in West Vancouver.

The bear was sent flying over the hood of the vehicle when it was hit head on.

WVPD spokesman Cpl. Jag Johal said visibility was a factor in the crash as there is limited lighting in the isolated area. He said that the file is closed and that there will be no further investigation into the crash.

The driver of the vehicle claimed to have seen the large black bear cross the road after the collision. One of the passengers believed they also saw a cub.

Authorities were called to the scene but were unable to locate the bears.

“This is not a common occurrence, but we are in an area of wildlife,” Johal said.“I haven’t come across a collision with a bear in my time here, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.”

The unsettled driver returned to the location of the collision the next day to discover a dead mother bear with two distraught looking cubs by her side.

“We would like to make revenue off of it, there’s no doubt, but it’s more important that we have a great marquee cultural attraction there.”

Mussatto said the contract would not commit the city to paying PCI any money or to pursuing any of the options brought forward. If their plan is ultimately approved, PCI will get a share of the revenue from the development. The city will retain ownership of the land.

“Those other two (adjacent) buildings could house restaurants or things like that that PCI would manage and we may get some of the revenue from PCI. They may keep some, they may use some of it to operate the cultural attraction. At the end of the day, we want to make sure we’re not putting any more money into the site, but we get a great cultural attraction,” Mussatto said, adding that the city had already been approached by several restaurant chains.

The mayor said he also heard several other museumstyle ideas floated.

Couns. Rod Clark, Pam Bookham and Bob Fearnley voted against entering a relationship with PCI. At the meeting, Fearnley described the move as “a huge mistake” and “the first step to selling out the public interest.”

“I know what’s going to come back,” he said in an interview later. “I just know; it’s going to be a mixture of residential and commercial, and I’ll tell you what the sales line is going to be: ‘You’re going to get this amount of money,’ and it’s going to be big numbers. We’re going to get another 20- or 30-storey tower right there in front of everyone’s views. We swore up and down we were going to do something else. We don’t promise we’re going to save people’s views, but I can hear the wails of displeasure from people up the hill now. But it’s going to be tempting, and people are going to be saying ‘This is a lot of money, we can’t just walk by this.’”

Fearnley said he preferred to leave the site alone until a project of a similar scope to the Maritime Centre comes along.

“There’s even a chance that once we’re through this rough patch that perhaps the federal and provincial governments would like to reconsider on the National Maritime Centre,” he said. “We need something of that scale down there. I may not know what will eventually get built down there, but when I see what fits, I’ll know it. What we did last night isn’t it.”

Realtor climbs Grind 14 times in one day

CLIMBING 39,620 stairs in one day may sound like an impossible task for most people but Vancouver real estate agent Sebastian Albrecht did just that on Monday.

Albrecht climbed North Vancouver’s Grouse Grind 14 times on the day, beating his 2009 record of 13 times, one he shared with Vicki Mann — who showed her support by accompanying him on a few trips up the mountain on Monday.

He took his first climb up the steep mountain face at 6:30 a.m. and he completed his 14th gondola trip down at 11:12 p.m.

“I feel good about having accomplished what I set out to do.” Albrecht said the morning after his climb.

“My body actually feels better than expected, so all and all pretty good.

The Grouse Grind is a 2.9-kilometre trail, with

2,830 stairs and an elevation gain of 853 metres up North Vancouver’s Grouse Mountain.

Albrecht was not only attempting to break his own record but also had a charitable element that drove him forward.

“After successfully completing 13 Grinds in one day last year and coming close to reaching my fundraising goal, I became motivated to up the ante this year,” Albrecht said in a press release before the event. “I have made changes to my training to improve my endurance and speed, and I am confident that I can complete 14 Grinds in one day and, hopefully, raise $15,000 for the Royal Le Page Shelter Foundation.”

The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation is a charity that shelters women and children who have been victims of violence.

Albrecht realizes there are many worthwhile charities, but chose to raise money and awareness for the Royal Le Page Shelter Foundation partly because all the money stays right here in Vancouver.

“These are a group of people that need help that aren’t in positions many of us are,” Albrecht said.

“Personally I don’t think you can have a home with fear in it.”

During one of his first trips up the mountain a fellow hiker passed over $500 right on the spot. During the day, a visiting group of school kids also recognized him from the news and loudly cheered him on.

“Knowing everyone is hoping you succeed, that keeps you going,” Albrecht said. “There are times when you don’t feel like going on, but then you remember all the people behind you.

With about $5,000 raised so far, Albrecht is still attempting to reach his fundraising goal of $15,000.

He will continue to accept donations for The Royal Le Page Shelter Foundation for the next week. Donations can be made at www.grind4shelter.com.

Albrecht said that he is happy with his accomplishment and does not expect to attempt to break his current record in the future. He said he will leave that task to someone else.

“There is a limit to what my body can do,” Albrecht said. “I reached my goal, now it’s time for somebody else. Records are meant to be broken.”

The District has been working on the Parks and Open Space Strategic Plan. The plan sets out a vision for the future and sets clear direction for the development, management, maintenance and renewal of our parks over the next ten years. Public consultation began in 2009, and helped guide the direction of the study. Through a series of workshops, public open houses, smaller focus group meetings, and discussions with Council, public input has led to the drafting of a Vision, Guiding Principles and Goals that address topics such as: managing park assets and infrastructure • environmental integrity and stewardship • trails and greenways • changing trends and demands • community partnerships and education • funding challenges.

Display boards with information about the Parks and Open Space Strategic Plan will be posted around the community throughout the Summer. Please continue to check our website, www.dnv.org, for updated information on this process and to submit your comments.

Not only have we had Seth and Stephen (our Pets of the Month) brought to us after being discovered abandoned in a box in a park, but we had another pair of 2-3 week old kittens arrive who were also abandoned. These lovely little guys are way too young to be removed from their mother, but they’re beginning to thrive thanks to the efforts of one of our incredible volunteers. A third set of kittens arrived at the shelter as a surprise addition to a pair of cats whose owner couldn’t keep them anymore. All these kittens are in need of good homes.

District News Council Meeting – Summer Schedule.

The North Shore Transfer Station (NSTS), operated by Wastech Services Ltd., has been serving customers in the Lower Mainland since 1988. Over the years, the facility has seen an increase in usage resulting in higher volumes of traffic, longer line-ups on the neighbouring municipal streets and a need for on-site traffic control personnel. To help alleviate these issues and restore access to local businesses in the area, Metro Vancouver has constructed a traffic overflow lot adjacent to the NSTS at 30 Riverside Drive. This new lot will be operational during peak traffic hours and can hold up to 70 vehicles in queue at one time. As a result of this, the number of traffic control personnel stationed around the NSTS will decrease as customers become familiar with the new traffic pattern changes on Riverside Drive.

It’s Roadwork Season! As our inventory of pavement ages, roads are assessed and rated to determine which streets will be rehabilitated each year. Factors such as upcoming water main replacements, traffic loads and overall pavement conditions are taken into consideration, and the District strives to ensure that the work is carried out in the most cost-effective manner. The task of maintaining the District’s road network in both a safe and trouble-free condition is a challenge that we take seriously and we’ll do our best to ensure that any disruptions are kept to a minimum. Nine- to 12-week-old “Ruth” is now being cared for at Critter Care in Langley. Founder and executive director Gail Martin said that the young cub is doing well. At only nine pounds she is the smallest cub currently at the facility, but that does not slow her down.

“She’s very spunky,” Martin said. “The other two are much bigger than her but she rules the roost!”

As for Ruth’s sibling, Martin is hoping that the cub can still be located. She said that it is hard to determine its chance of survival on its own in the wild. “In the summer orphaned cubs can do quite well, as there is an abundance of food, it is in the fall that they can run into problems,” Martin said.

She indicated a bear as small as this one could fall prey to a full-grown male bear.

If anyone spots a lonely cub they are encouraged to call the Bear Line at 604-990-BEAR (2327).

Ruth will remain at Critter Care for about 18 months and then she will be released back into the wild.

Critter Care attempts to limit human interaction with the bear cubs as much as possible to avoid habituation. Only primary caregivers are allowed to feed and clean them, and the bears are never shown to outsiders.

Martin said that the organization has a high success rate with around 60 bears that have been reintroduced into the wild.

More charges possible against HIV-positive man POLICE are recommending new charges against a North Vancouver man accused of having unprotected sex with a woman without telling her he had HIV. Four more alleged victims have come forward in the case.

Adam Rollo, 28, was arrested May 19 when a former sexual partner claimed he had failed to tell her about his illness despite knowing about it since 2003. North Vancouver RCMP issued a statement at the time and published Rollo’s photo in an effort to alert other potential victims to the danger.

The new accusers apparently came forward in response to that call. Police are now recommending four charges of aggravated assault against Rollo in addition to the charge laid in May. The most recent charges have not yet been approved by Crown counsel.

Police have republished Rollo’s photo this week in case there are more alleged victims out there. It’s not clear at this point how many women might have been exposed.

“We don’t have that information,” said Cpl. Peter DeVries, a spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP. “It’s just a guess, and we also have a bit of an obligation to notify the public.”

Investigators are not saying whether any of the women involved in the case have contracted the disease.

Rollo is Caucasian, five feet seven inches tall with a medium build, hazel eyes and brown hair.

SEA rescue volunteers enjoyed a rare moment in the spotlight Saturday when they were presented with a certificate of appreciation for their efforts in a rescue operation in May. A representative for the federal Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria bestowed the award on members of West Vancouver’s Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Station 1 in a ceremony at the old government dock in Horseshoe Bay. The unit sprang into action May 21 when they received a distress call from a scuba diver who was on a night dive just north of the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. The man’s diving partner had not ascended with him and eventually surfaced unconscious.

The auxiliary unit was the first boat on the scene, arriving within 10 minutes of the call. They pulled the diver and his unconscious partner out of the water and administered CPR. Other services soon arrived, including West Vancouver police and firefighters, B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics and even B.C. Ferries’ Queen of Coquitlam.

Unfortunately, they were unable to save the unconscious man.

Although the victim died, it is nonetheless important to recognize the efforts of those involved, said Dugal Purdie, Station 1’s unit leader, as this type of award helps ensure the continuation the service.

“If you don’t recognize people like that, they don’t go on putting in all the time and effort,” said Purdie.

The volunteer station is overseen by the nonprofit North Shore Lifeboat Society. Its mandate is to promote boating safety and provide marine search and rescue services 24 hours a day.

Purdie says the unit is actively recruiting.

ANADA is no soccer powerhouse. But every four years, people who would otherwise scoff at spending 90 minutes on watching a goalless draw suddenly remember there’s a sport that attracts more world interest than hockey.

The World Cup is FIFA’s big moment. The eyes of the world are locked on their storied festival. So why does soccer’s governing body insist on making sure those eyes end up rolling in contempt?

While lifelong fans can recites decades worth of injustices — casual observers simply scoff and change the channel.

It may be the greatest gathering of the most gifted athletes in the world, but you can find better refereeing at your local midget hockey pre-season game.

Of course it’s not the referees at

fault. It’s the ostrich-headed despot of soccer, FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

This week, after the Irish, the English and the Mexicans were robbed blind in front of millions of witnesses, Blatter conceded that maybe, just maybe, he could consider the possibility of instant replay or goal-line technology to support his beleaguered referees.

Welcome to the future, Sepp — we’ve been waiting for you.

Anyone watching a slow-motion replay could make the right calls in seconds. Resisting this is not purism or respect for tradition, it’s imbecility.

Blatter, or hopefully his replacement, must reintroduce fairness to the beautiful game before the next World Cup, or even the die-hard supporters will be changing the channel in disgust.

Eagle population limited by nest sites Dear Editor: Chief Justin George is correct when he states that the population of North Shore bald eagles could not sustain any form of harvesting (Tsleil-Waututh Oppose Trade in Eagle Parts, North Shore News, June 27).

The best indicator of the population size of bald eagles on the North Shore is to look at the number of successful nest sites.

Between Horseshoe Bay and Deep Cove there are seven active nests; three in the District of North Vancouver, two in the City of North Vancouver and two in the District of West Vancouver. With the exception of one large cottonwood, all the North Shore nests are in large Douglas fir trees; either old growth trees or younger trees that have lost their tops and developed multiple leaders suitable for cradling the heavy nest.

Although there is some indication of competition between resident pairs and newcomers at the beginning of each nesting season, the limited number of suitable nest sites means that there are essentially seven pairs of adult birds resident during the nesting season.

The bald eagle is a North American wanderer when not nesting, and this so-called resident population may fly as far away as Florida or Alaska between August and February.

As a biologist, I have watched North Shore eagles over the last 10 years and researched their history. I see a serious reduction in suitable nest sites and therefore resident population size.

Some former nest sites have been destroyed or threatened by development, and others abandoned because of increased human activity adjacent to them.

I have noted a number of attempts by adult birds (probably the offspring of the resident pairs) to establish new nest sites in unsuitable trees, all immature Douglas-firs. All nests failed because of the inability of the branches of the trees to support the weight of the heavy nest. Other factors such as absence of outlook over the forest canopy probably contributed to abandonment.

The only locations on the North Shore that have trees with potential for new sites are the few old-growth Douglas firs remaining

in West Vancouver. Because the bald eagle prefers to have its nest tree close to a food source, nest trees must be within easy flight and sight of the shoreline and river mouths of Burrard Inlet. This excludes the old-growth Douglas firs above the residential area, thus leaving West Vancouver as the last haven for new nest sites.

Yes, the population of bald eagles on the North Shore needs all the help it can get if it is to be sustained at present levels, and harvesting for ritual use, even if managed, is not an option.

Ponder the meaning of new memorial sculpture

Dear Editor: The North Shore Compassionate Friends’ memorial project team was pleased to find the photo and story of our public art project (Sculpture Unveiled) on page 3 of your June 25 edition. Our only disappointment was to read the description of our marble sculpture as representing “a woman who has a hole in the middle.” As bereaved parents, whether fathers or mothers, we do feel a hollow in our centre when our children die. However, the sculpture invites more poetic interpretations, many of which have been expressed not only by the bereaved who commissioned the statue, but by neighbours of Victoria Park who have been pausing to contemplate it. The hole is “a way of seeing through to the other side,” said one. Another said it “represents the embracing of a sacred space.” Or a hole, as “no-thing” can represent the concept of infinity, a concept only understood through meditation.

We hope that the community of the North Shore will continue to be stimulated and pleased with this addition to their landscape. The marble of the statue, quarried from the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, has been polished by Daniel Cline to invite touch. The stone has such a glow in the sunlight that it is almost translucent.

Surrounding the statue, a slate pathway with words chosen by parents to represent their dead children invites children to skip and play, while adults, again, are asked to contemplate the words: joy, no regrets, we are all connected. . . .

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 27, more than 300 gathered to listen to music and speeches in a dedication celebration of this art work. Now, it sits quietly among the green of the park, inviting passersby to stop, ponder and enjoy.

Vander Zalm assuming Opposition role

HAS Bill Vander Zalm replaced Carole James as the face of the opposition to the B.C. Liberal government?

It certainly seems that way.

James may be the Official Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, but only in the legislature and in name only.

Vander Zalm, on the other hand, is the very public leader of a populist tax revolt and he’s the one getting all the ink and television news time — not the NDP leader.

And it is Vander Zalm, along with his political sidekick, Chris Delaney, who seems to be calling the shots when it comes to taking on the B.C. Liberals.

They are the ones crafting a recall strategy — not the NDP. James has largely been invisible the past few months.

Perhaps this is by design, as she has made regional visits, garnering a bit of media

coverage in smaller towns.

Mike Harcourt adopted a similar strategy in the late 1980s, as he let his so-called “pit bulls” (MLAs Glen Clark, Dan Miller, Moe Sihota and Dale Lovick) hog all the face time with the major media, while he toured the province for months on end.

But Harcourt ran into trouble when, out of nowhere, Gordon Wilson and his disorganized

B.C. Liberal party rocketed in the polls as the ruling Social Credit party disintegrated.

James had better be careful that a similar scenario doesn’t engulf her own leadership. She has always seemed to have a tenuous grip on her own party, and if her party stalls in the polls while a third-party alternative catches fire with the voters, she had better watch out.

These developments raise an interesting question: Can James and the NDP wrest the limelight away from the smiling, tanned, charming Vander Zalm?

A number of New Democrats have assured me that when the time comes, they’ll simply elbow Vander Zalm aside, thank him for his time, and prepare to take over the reins from the B.C. Liberals in 2013. But having spent an enormous amount of time around Vander Zalm during his successful Social Credit

leadership race and his less successful time in the premier’s office, I wouldn’t bet the farm on anyone making him disappear from public view.

If Vander Zalm follows through on his threat to start recall campaigns against targeted B.C. Liberal MLAs, he will continue to frame the political debate in this province.

It won’t be James and the NDP who are seen as the prime opponents (and alternative) to the government, it will be Vander Zalm and his gang.

Of course, pulling off a successful recall campaign is tough business. Vander Zalm will need the signatures of at least 40 per cent of the voters in a particular riding, a goal made even tougher by the fact that the voter’s list is significantly out of date.

the hysterical sales tax. Of those, 21 occupy seats from regions the old federal Reform Party used to sweep with some big majorities. Having underestimated the popularity of the anti-HST petition, I’m not about to totally dismiss the chances of a successful recall.

The old Reform country is rich with anti-tax populism, and it’s easy to imagine a recall petition catching fire with the voters in those areas.

It will be difficult to pull off, but all Vander Zalm needs is one or two winning campaigns.

If he can achieve that goal, he will push James farther out of the limelight, thus weakening her leadership even further.

While it’s true a fractured B.C. Liberal party is a perfect recipe for an NDP win in 2013, New Democrats had best ensure a new populist, free-

Shooting a bear is the last resort, but once bears become habituated to urban living it is difficult to re-integrate them to the wild. Relocation is a limited answer, as relocated bears are often not well accepted by territorial wild bears.

Also, once bears have a taste for human food they often seek it out and come back. Being bear smart requires residents to control food and garbage attractants, and to avoid encouraging bears to feel comfortable in an urban environment.

NV school district plans to fundraise NORTH Vancouver’s school district is hoping philanthropic residents and businesses can help pay for some of the events and programs the province won’t fund.

At a board of education meeting June 22, community

and business development manager Sandy Shaw presented a draft of the district’s “giving strategy” — a plan to coordinate various fundraising efforts.

In her written report to the board, Shaw said the district “is now in a position where the provincial funding we receive is insufficient to cover the true cost of providing quality education deserved and expected by the

community . . . in this changing environment, the need for expanded fundraising to assist us in meeting our organizational requirements is becoming increasingly apparent.”

Shaw told trustees that there were three possible ways to co-ordinate fundraising: set up a standalone foundation, develop a relationship with an existing foundation, or create a fundraising arm within the

district’s current administration.

Both the Langley and Vancouver school districts set up dedicated foundations in 2001, although Vancouver wound theirs down in 2009 due to cost concerns. Both bodies were collecting about half a million dollars annually.

While foundations tend to draw more attention and are sometimes an “easier sell” for donors, staffing and legal costs

can erode the net revenue.

Trustees voted unanimously to move forward with an inhouse fundraising organization.

By holding annual fundraising events and providing some kind of recognition, such as a plaque, the district may be able to keep donors coming back each year.

“It’s about relationships,” Shaw said. “It’s about sustaining those relationships.”

Some of the items the district is looking to fund include a student honours luncheon, arts festivals and an elementary school track meet. The school district is also still looking for money for the asphalt running track planned for Windsor secondary.

Given the volatile nature of the B.C. electorate, it’s conceivable a third party could swamp the existing B.C. Liberals to the point of simply replacing them. That would put the NDP up against a single free-enterprise party again.

The NDP jumped on the anti-HST bandwagon for obvious political advantage.

They had better hope that bandwagon doesn’t get so crowded that they end up getting pushed off it as it heads down the road.

Stratton to chair NV board of education

NORTH Vancouver’s school district will see a change in leadership this month.

Chairwoman Susan Skinner opted not to see re-election at a board of education meeting June 22. Trustees voted unanimously to promote vicechairwoman Franci Stratton to the head of the table.

Trustee Barry Forward was elected, also unanimously, as vice-chairman.

“I’ve decided to focus more on my family and other career and academic pursuits,” said Skinner after the meeting.

“Another key consideration is that last year, after chairing for a few months, I held a trustees’ seminar and really questioned which trustees had an appetite for leadership and there were a lot. There’s a fantastic skill set around the table . . . (Stratton) really wants to chair the district and over the past few months she’s really gotten ready for that

“There were many others who were interested in the leadership of chair and vicechair,” Skinner said. “So the generous and dignified thing to do is be a mentor and step aside and allow that to happen.”

Skinner said she would stay on as trustee, but acknowledged that fatigue

played a part in her decision.

Elected as chairwoman in June of 2009 following the departure of Jane Thornthwaite to the provincial legislature, Skinner has overseen a tumultuous year for the school district, which included school closures, staff and teacher layoffs and a budget process described by superintendent John Lewis as the toughest he has seen in two decades.

There were brighter moments as well, such as the opening of the new Highlands school, start of work on a new art gallery and administration building, new sports facilities at Windsor secondary, development of a new visual brand, and the installation of wireless Internet throughout the district.

Skinnersaidshewasthinking about pursuing a master’s degree, or possibly making a run for the board of the B.C. Public Schools Employers’ Association or the B.C. School Trustees’ Association.

“I’ve got four children at home too, so it’s quite a load,” she said.

Stratton, who spent 16 years on the district parent advisory council before running for the board of education in 2008, took office July 1.

BORN and raised in North Vancouver Brandi Disterheft doesn’t get home that much anymore.

The jazz fest is as good excuse as any for the Juno Award-winning bassist, now living in New York City, to visit the West Coast and catch up with friends and family. The first few years she came back Disterheft was playing in support of other artists (Richard Whiteman and Laila Biali) but the last couple she’s been leading her own band.

Like her good buddy Biali, and Renee Rosnes before them, Disterheft began to develop her jazz chops at Handsworth secondary. A common thread for all three women, who have gone on to establish international careers, was teacher Bob Rebagliati.

“I’m still in touch with Mr. Reb,” says Disterheft. “We call him Mr. Reb. My folks are very good friends of his. In fact that’s why I play bass because they wanted me to go to that school and study with that teacher.

“Laila is one of my absolute best friends. We met at Handsworth and then we both got scholarships to go to Humber College. She was always ahead of the game

and I’ve always learned from her. She was the first to move to New York and then I followed.”

Toronto was a stepping stone for Disterheft who is now soaking up the scene in NYC, the jazz capital of the world. “New York is amazing,” she says. “My favourite thing to do is hang out at the jam sessions ’til five in the morning and that’s really how the older guys learned. There’s stories about how that’s how Charlie Parker learned and it’s very much alive here. There’s an incredible learning curve — I’m absolutely loving it.”

Currently Disterheft is studying with legendary bassist Ron Carter who has played with a lot of great musicians over the years including Jaki Byard, Chico Hamilton and Eric Dolphy as well as being a member of Miles Davis’ seminal ’60s quintet. Always on the cutting edge you couldn’t ask for a better teacher.

Studying with Carter has opened up a lot of new experiences for Disterheft and that range is evident in her latest album, Second Side, released in September 2009 on Justin Time Records. The recording not only serves as a followup to 2007’s Debut but also gives Disterheft a chance to stretch out and try new things.

Produced by North Shore-based electronica musician Rhys Fulber (a.k.a. Delerium) the recording places the young bassist and her band in many different kinds of musical settings. There was no comfort zone nor were they looking for one.

“It was great working with Rhys,” says Disterheft. “He’s known for making industrial music so it was a totally different perspective on a jazz record. I’m really See Disterheft page 21

Eclipse brings physical edge to Twilight Reel Life

Directed by David Slade.

Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Ashley Greene, Billy Burke and Dakota Fanning.

Rating: 7 (out of 10) Actor Robert Pattinson has had a busy fortnight.

First, it was revealed that the 24-year-old shares a bloodline with Vlad The Impaler, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

(Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight series, is also related: apparently Vlad got around.)

Then Pattinson made it halfway up Forbes Magazine’s Celebrity 100 Power List, ranking 50th thanks to his $17 million in earnings last year and relentless “R-Pattz” media coverage.

Oh, and he has a little movie coming out this week.

The third time’s a charm with the Twilight franchise.

David Slade is at the helm this time around (three Twilight movies, three different directors). Slade directed the edgy Hard Candy and cut his teeth doing vampire films with 2007’s 30 Days Of Night.

ROBERT Pattinson and Kristen Stewart star in the locally-made Eclipse. The third instalment of The Twilight Saga, directed by David Slade, is now on screen at Park & Tilford Cineplex.

The locally shot Eclipse becomes the first film in the series to rouse a little passion in the players, Pattinson and Kristen Stewart (as vampireloving Bella), in particular. The actors mumbled petulantly through the first two films, bringing none of their reported real-life romance to the big screen. But in Eclipse the characters get more physical, Bella loses some of the grungy angst she’s been dragging around, and Stewart actually smiles!

Bella is torn between her vampire love Edward (Pattinson) and werewolf friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) more than ever. Bella desperately wants an eternal life with Edward, but oldfashioned guy that he is — he’s over 100 years old, after all — Edward will compromise neither her soul nor her virginity until there’s a ring on her finger. (The chastity factor of the books and films scores big points with parents; that’ll all change with Breaking

Dawn, wherein Bella finally gets her vamp on.)

A relationship with Jacob, on the other hand, means Bella wouldn’t have to say goodbye to her dad (Billy Burke) and the life she knows in Forks, Washington. “I’d rather you were dead than one of them,” Jacob growls. The perpetually shirtless Lautner gets all the best lines of the film, including a showstopper in the titular tent scene. It’s snowing outside the tent and Bella is freezing. Undead Edward is

no help, but Jacob’s werewolf blood runs hot: “Let’s face it: I am hotter than you,” Jacob says as he crawls into Bella’s sleeping bag. Cue hysteria from the audience.

If you haven’t seen the first two films or read Meyers’ novels, you might need someone to fill you in on the backstory. (Just ask anyone wearing a Team Jacob or Team Edward T-shirt: they’ll happily provide all that info and more.)

An army of new and dangerous young vampires

is being creating in Seattle.

Edward and the rest of the immortal Cullen family, who live peacefully in the area, seem to be the target, but it’s unclear whether Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) is behind the recruitment, or the villainous Volturi from Rome (Dakota Fanning among them). For the first time in history, the vampire and werewolf clans are forced to work together.

Every time the lovetriangle threatens to get a little too daytime-soaps, Slade throws in a bit of scary stuff to keep things lively. The violence is more prevalent than in the first two films: Eclipse is the first to employ real horrorfilm devices. There’s not a lot of blood, but screams and shattered bodies galore.

Visual effects have improved from the last film to keep pace with the action, which includes an impressive battle scene between vampire families, with Jacob’s werewolves thrown in. Interest in the characters also widens thanks to the histories — told in flashbacks — of several members of the Cullen family.

“Twi-hard” fans will love the stand-and-cheer ending, which sets things up nicely for Breaking Dawn, the end of the Twilight saga, split into two films.

The first Twilight film did $408 million in business worldwide. New Moon, released exactly a year later, brought in almost $710 million. That’s $1.1 billion before you even factor in lunchbox and soundtrack sales.

The movie is poised to break records opening weekend, proving that being undead is still really hot.

Cinephiles and critics were in ecstasy when this new restoration of Metropolis debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year. Pacific Cinémathèque is presenting its Vancouver premiere in High Definition. Lang’s dystopian science-fiction epic is one of cinema’s great visionary masterpieces, and one of the classic films of German Expressionism. In 2008, a 16mm dupe negative of Metropolis was discovered in a Buenos Aires archive. The print was substantially longer than any known extant version of the film; in fact, it contained an additional 25 minutes of footage thought lost — about a fifth of the film, including missing scenes and excised subplots. After careful restoration work, this newly-discovered material (identifiable because it is more worn and scratchy) was integrated into a 2002 restoration, creating a 147-minute version that matches, as closely as possible, Metropolis as Lang intended it.

WHEN Geoff Muldaur took the stage with his longtime friend and former band member Jim Kweskin after 38 years had passed, he was overwhelmed.

“It was magic,” says Muldaur.

They’d gathered in Tokyo, Japan in 2006 for a show in honour of jug and washtub bass player Fritz Richmond, a fellow founding member of the influential 1960s Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Richmond passed away from lung cancer in 2005.

“He’s just one of the great pickers of all time,” says Muldaur of guitarist Kweskin, adding it was amazing to see him back in action after so many years.

While singer/songwriter Muldaur had been pursuing a solo career and other musical projects, Kweskin had opted to take a step back and focus on running a prominent construction company.

Muldaur was delighted to see his peer’s chops were still intact and their chemistry was as strong as ever.

Following the performance, Muldaur and Kweskin have continued to perform as a duo and are set to take the stage in North Vancouver July 4 as part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival’s North Shore Jazz series at Capilano University’s Performing Arts Theatre.

Muldaur and Kweskin, now based in Los Angeles, Calif., met while living on the East Coast, through their involvement in the Cambridge folk scene.

“I was still flirting with maybe getting a real job when I was 19, but then the Jug Band started and all hell broke loose,” says Muldaur.

The Jim Kweskin Jug Band, also comprised of Maria Muldaur and Mel Lyman, experienced a quick rise to the top. They were fixtures at the Newport Folk Festival, playing it as a mainstage act for a number of years in the 1960s.

“The Newport Folk festivals were pinnacle moments in everyone’s career that got to play them,” says Muldaur. “Those were times when you could play the Newport Folk Festival and if you did well that meant you were a star.”

The band also appeared on a number of popular television programs, like The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Steve Allen Show.

“We played to all of America, which is not that easy to do. It would be comparable to Saturday Night Live now,” says Muldaur.

His shows with Kweskin see them reliving some of those important moments to the delight of their loyal fan base.

“I like telling stories because I get to tell about a completely different time in America,” says Muldaur. “And the people that we learned from, we learned from in kitchens, not on CDs.” For example, the jug band members got to hangout with legends Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Bukka White and Joseph Spence.

“We’re very lucky,” says Muldaur.

However, he attests their current shows are about more than just storytelling, seeing the music take centre stage.

“It’s sort of a look at American music from the golden age,” he says.

“We came out of a different time and that’s our job to pass that on,” he adds.

That said, their arrangements are all their own, as they have no interest in rehashing anything.

“What you hear will be unique to American folk, blues and jazz people,” he says. “We do it the way we do it. If you want it, you’ve gotta come to us.”

In addition to performing with Kweskin, Muldaur has a number of other projects on the go. While he took 17 years off from performing himself, he returned, re-energized in the late 1990s

This fall he’ll be travelling to Japan for a tour with Amos Garrett, who he played with in the 1970s as part of Paul Butterfield’s Better Days.

“I was part of two very seminal groups,” says Muldaur, referencing Better Days and the Jug Band.

“To be a part of those two groups, you could die and go to heaven right there. They were both so great to be a part of,” he says.

The last album he made was with a group called Geoff Muldaur and the Texas Sheiks. Among the talented contributors was Kweskin and the late Stephen Bruton, an acclaimed American musician who died last year, just prior to the release of the record, dubbed Texas Sheiks.

“Because it isn’t just me I can tell you it’s great,” says Muldaur.

“It’s the strongest bunch of roots musicians I’ve ever played with and Jim feels the same way.”

Muldaur’s solo career is also going strong. This summer, he’s set to play four Canadian music festivals (including the Edmonton and Calgary folk festivals), and he’s rehearsing chamber music with an ensemble in Amsterdam. He recently finished penning the horn charts for B.B. King’s newest album. Muldaur met the blues great at the 1967 Newport Folk Festival, an encounter he remembers fondly as King bought his daughter Jenni a bag of popcorn.

And finally, based on some blogging he’s been doing on his website, Muldaur has been offered a book deal, linking his current travels with his past experiences.

“I have a lot of different ideas that go through my mind,” he says. “I start pushing rocks up hill. If I’m pushing three rocks uphill and one of ’em starts to move, that’s the one I do.”

Other projects he hopes to tackle in the future include an electric album with the Texas Sheiks, some gospel recordings with a choir, and, of course, an album with Kweskin.

When asked what he attributes to his success over the years, Muldaur says his ability to focus on the music has been an important contributor.

“One of the things that I’ve been extremely lucky to have is that I’ve never gotten involved in business very much,” he says. “Here we were kids and all of a sudden we’re in Time Magazine and Life Magazine and we’re going on the Johnny Carson show. It just was immediate ease of doing whatever we wanted, so I never had to play the game.”

Timing is another contributor, he says. As the music industry has evolved, more and more people are doing the singer/ songwriter thing. Muldaur feels fortunate to have had the

opportunity to pursue that path much earlier.

“When I started playing blues guitar as a white kid from the New York area, I’ll bet ya’ there weren’t more than 150 kids doing that in the United States,” he says. “And Jim thinks it was less. And now, I’d say there’d be 150,000.”

While that may be true, it’s not just a numbers game; Muldaur’s charisma and musical prowess has stood the test of time, however humbly he opts to accept that fact.

“I just go where I’m wanted and I’m fortunate to be wanted in various places around the world, not in a huge fashion but it keeps going,” he says. “I jump from one leaky canoe to the next. Like I said, I’m a very lucky man.”

Disterheft loving the jazz life in New York From page 13

“We had a blast. I was listening to a lot of Milton Nascimento and Brazilian music. Milton’s music is a little bit more poppy so it’s very interesting. The melodies are beautiful and I wanted to emulate some of that on the new album.”

Second Side features Disterheft singing on two tracks (“Combien de Chances” and “Twilight Curtain”) and also has guest vocals from Holly Cole (“He’s Walkin”) and Ranee Lee (“This Time The Dream’s On Me”). Cole shares a writer’s credit on her track which has a playful ’50s rockabilly feel while Lee was an obvious choice for the closer, says Disterheft. “She has always been a real inspiration so I asked her if she wanted to sing “This Time the Dream’s On Me” which is a beautiful song.”

Charlie Parker also did a version of the tune tying it in neatly with Disterheft’s current New York state of mind.

“Back in the day on those live Charlie Parker records all you hear is the kick drums and alto saxophone. It sounds like hiphop and I’m convinced that’s why people loved it so I was trying to bring that element back.”

CAMPBELL, Harry Roy August 17, 1950 - June 27, 2010.

Harry passed peacefully surrounded by the love of his family and friends at Lion’s Gate Hospital in North Vancouver.

Harry will be dearly missed by his daughter Chrystal Nahanee (Harold III); grandchildren Keenan, Peyton, and Kale; mother Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Campbell; brother Robert; sisters Shirley, Joanne, Nancy Williams and Christine; and his dear friend Mary-Anne Baker; and many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends..

A prayer service will be held for Harry on Thursday, July 1, 2010 at 7:00 pm and a funeral service at 10:00am on Friday, July 2, 2010 both at Chief Joe Mathias Centre, 100 Capilano Road, North Vancouver, BC.

DRIEHUYZEN - Hein Willem Hein passed away peacefully on May 17 2010, at Lions Gate Hospital, North Vancouver, from complications due to cancer. Hein was born in Zandtfoort, Netherlands, in 1933. In 1953 he went to Sweden where he met his life’s partner, Gretel Buchler one lovely spring evening . Ever the adventurer, Hein joined his twin brother, and emigrated to Canada where Gretel joined him 3 years later. After graduating from UBC with a degree in Forestry, Hein and Gretel were married, and had 2 daughters, Marietta, and Fiona.

Hein did not remain in Forestry, but went on to become a highly respected cruising sailboat designer. He started his own company, Sceptre Yachts, and over the next years built 89 sailing vessels. In 1993 Hein retired, and enjoyed 17 happy years in his beautiful home and garden with Gretel by his side. Hein will be lovingly remembered by his dear Gretel, daughters Marietta and Fiona, grandchildren Sophia, Mikhi, and Emily, brother Martin [Riet], sister Wilfriede, and many friends and relatives both in North America and Europe. We all feel the great loss of this special man, but are comforted in knowing he is home now, in peace and light. We would like to thank the great staff and volunteers in Palliative Care, Lions Gate Hospital as well as the home care attendants for all their compassionate support.

HANSEN - Kevin Scott Loving son, brother and uncle, Kevin passed away peacefully at home on June 26, 2010. He left us too soon on June 26, 2010 after battling colon and liver challenges, and most recently cancer. He leaves behind his mother Betty Elaine and brother, Ted, two nephews, and sisters Lori and Heather, who will all miss him very much. Kevin was an airline professional holding many positions in Vancouver, Fort Saint John, and Toronto with Canadian Pacific Airlines, Wardair, KLM and most recently Saudi Arabian Airlines, for which he was Sales and Marketing Manager for Canada. In his 27 years in the industry, Kevin made many friends around the globe and was known as always positive and generous. Kevin will be remembered by his family for his love and extreme generosity to his mother, brother and nephews.

He will also be remembered by his friends and family for the rich life he lived outside the airline industry. He had a sense of humour, political insight and musical talent that all made him an interesting friend who could “liven up dull dinner parties”. He also loved the outdoors and from an early age enjoyed camping with family. Kevin will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his mother Betty Elaine, brother Ted and his two sons, sisters Lori and Heather, his many cousins and friends, colleagues and neighbors, and other liver transplant survivors, for many of which Kevin became a mentor. A celebration of Kevin’s life for friends, family and colleagues will be held at 2:00 pm July 5, 2010 at Boal Chapel in North Vancouver with a graveside service at Capilano View Cemetery in West Vancouver at 3:00 pm. HANSEN - Chris. G. March 22, 1968-June 26, 2010 It is with the greatest sadness that we are saying goodbye to our beloved husband, Dad, son and friend. Chris was born in North Vancouver, where he grew up surrounded by the magnificent natural environment, which became a big part of his life. He expressed his connection to nature through skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, surfing, windsurfing, fishing and rock climbing. His love of the outdoors was not only his passion, but it was often also the subject of his work as a camera man in the film industry. His family and many friends will miss his thoughtfulness and tenderness, his sense of humour, and his exuberant joy of life, music and friends. He was a devoted father to Taje and husband to Shelley.

Laura is once again with George, her husband of 65 years who passed away last July. Laura is survived by son Paul (Tina), daughters Gillian (Doug Irwin) and Joy (John Russell), grandchildren Lyndsay (Nicole Cherry), Stephen, and Chelsea (Sam Brown); Kalen; Dacey; Nicholas and Keith. Laura was born in South Shields, County Durham, England in 1918. She married George in 1944 and emigrated to Canada and North Vancouver with three young children on May 1, 1957. Laura’s first love was home and family and she celebrated the time she had children at home. She also shared her gift of theatre and music by performing in musical theatre and concert groups in hospitals and for shut-ins.

However, most of all, Laura was known and loved for her kindness to all and her willingness to listen.

Laura was very close to her church family at St. Andrew’s United Church and was grateful for their love and support particularly over the last few years. Thanks to Dr. Joanne Trebell, the palliative staff at Lions Gate Hospital, and the care givers provided by Bayshore Home Care, particularly Ruby, Jossie and Emma. A celebration of Laura’s life will be held Saturday, July 3 at 3:00 at St. Andrew’s United Church, 1044 St. Georges Ave, North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Lions Gate or St. Paul’s Hospitals.

Watch for signs of heatstroke: Rapid panting, hot skin, twitching muscles, a dazed look. Wrap the animal in a towel soaked with cool, not cold, water. In severe cases, place them in the bathtub. Heatstroke can be fatal.

FORD’S unique Flex crossover was designed to be an alternative to the traditional minivan, combining seven-passenger convenience and a retro-cool exterior to create a stylish and functional people mover.

Expectations were huge when it arrived in 2008, and Ford went so far as to suggest that the Flex would have the impact of the 1986 Taurus, a revolutionary car that completely changed the way we looked at mid-size sedans.

Two years later, that’s hardly the case. However, it’s not entirely the Flex’s fault — there was just too much going on in the larger world for it to achieve the success of the original Taurus. As Ford ramped up for the Flex’s 2008 introduction, the world economy went into free fall and vehicle sales tanked, eventually forcing Chrysler and GM into bankruptcy. Ford had recognized the unsustainable market for large, gas-hungry vehicles early in the decade, enabling it to weather the storm, but the Flex was a little too late to the party. If it had launched even a few months sooner, the Flex might have had enough market traction to guarantee initial success.

Instead, it arrived at a time when people were losing their jobs and their savings — not exactly the right moment for a luxury-oriented family vehicle costing upwards of $30,000.

Of course, economic woes were only part of the problem, the other being that love-it-or-hate-it, retro-cool exterior. Some will appreciate the Flex for exactly what is: a stylish and versatile minivan replacement. Others will see the Flex as a big, chromedup station wagon — and that’s all. They’ll rarely pause to learn about its features and functionality, and never appreciate how useful it can be. So, while the Flex has recovered somewhat, with sales improving steadily this past spring, it’s unreasonable at this point to compare it to the game-changing Taurus, a car that was far more budgetfriendly and far less polarizing.

The Flex is, quite simply, not a car that everyone in North America could see themselves owning, and for that reason it never had the potential of the 1986 Taurus. The economic downturn certainly didn’t help, but even without it, Ford may have set the bar too high in the first place.

Still, while it’s not the car for everyone, the Flex is well regarded in the automotive world — especially with the introduction of Ford’s EcoBoost engine technology for 2010. Owners love their Flexes, appreciating its useful interior space, top-notch safety ratings and eye-catching design. Sales might not be what Ford had hoped, but the Flex is exactly what they were trying to deliver. Fault lies with the expectations, not the vehicle.

Design The retro-themed Flex is based upon the Ford Fairlane concept from the 2005 North American International Auto Show, and is very faithful to the design of the show car. It’s unfortunate, however, that Ford chose not to return the iconic Fairlane nameplate to production.

Notable styling cues on the

long, wide, and rectangular Flex include the three-bar chrome grille (now used throughout the Ford line-up) and the white-painted roof.

New for 2010 is a Titanium trim package available on the top-end Limited model, which includes a black roof and mouldings, blacked-out head and taillights and blackchrome trim.

Inside, the Flex features upscale chrome and fauxwood trim, complementing the classy exterior styling.

However, the buttons, switches, and gauges are the same as found in other vehicles — it’s disappointing that the automaker doesn’t give individual vehicles unique interior personalities.

Naked woman steals, crashes two cars

A biweekly roundup of automotive news, good, bad and just plain weird:

Utah woman steals two cars, while naked Ever had a kinda weird day? Was it ever as weird as having your car stolen by a naked woman? Didn’t think so.

While putting up road signs outside West Valley, Utah, an unidentified man was surprised to see a car pull up beside his parked vehicle as it was five in the morning in the middle of nowhere.

Then a naked woman got out, jumped into his car and drove off with it.

Most people would have just stood there, mouths agape, but whoever this guy was, he had presence of mind, immediately setting off in hot pursuit behind the wheel of Naked Woman’s abandoned ride.

It gets better.

Hot pursuit ends in a mighty crash (obviously) and by this time the police have shown up. The naked woman hides in a bush until the cops arrive, and then runs directly at the nearest police officer.

He, of course, finds out that a naked, sweaty and slightly bloody (from crashing) woman is a bit hard to hold onto, as there’s nowhere to grab hold, or perhaps there is and he’s just being a gentleman. Either way, two minutes later, off goes Naked Woman in a stolen police car. Cue high-speed chase number two.

Also, cue spectacular crash number two, this time with a dirt berm that launches the cruiser 50 feet in the air — police Capt. Tom McLachlan said of it later, “I think there’s a hubcap that’s still usable.” Undeterred, See Porsche page 30

Porsche versus Mini update: 911 Wins!

If you missed it last week, everyone was all abuzz over Mini’s gauntlet-tossing, and Porsche’s apparent unwillingness to take up the challenge. Basically, Mini was determined to pit a Cooper S against a 911 Carrera S, and was confident that the Mini’s go-kart handling would win the day. It was, of course, a great big PR stunt, and Porsche didn’t want to play ball.

course Mini had set up at the famous Road Atlanta racetrack utilized very little of the actual race-course, being more of a tight, lowspeed autocross course in the parking lot. But Porsche’s refusal didn’t stop Mini: they just found their own driver and a rented Porsche Carrera to race.

After all that, do you suppose the fix was in? Think again, as the Carrera trounced the little Cooper handily.

The best part of this whole debacle? Hyundai’s contribution, which was to stick its nose in and challenge Mini to a proper lap of Road Atlanta, right after their little “go-kart race” is over.

Hyundai watch: Most improved company?

It’s no secret that the critics are big fans of Hyundai’s product range, including the smart little cars from their Kia sister company.

Well, it appears all the praise has gone to the Korean company’s head — in a good way.

Official reports on the new turbocharged Sonata have acceleration times at 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds (which is Porsche Boxster quick) and a projected fuel economy

of 6.9 l/100 km (which is Toyota Yaris efficient).

There’s also a rumour going around that their new small coupe, potentially called the Veloster, will be hitting 5.9 l/100 km, which should be good enough to best Honda’s upcoming CR-Z. Best of all, the Genesis coupe is potentially going to get a third engine option.

Already, the two-litre turbo and three-litre V-6 are sporty and powerful respectively, but how about a Mustangdominating 429 horsepower five-litre V-8? The new V-8 is destined to appear in the Genesis sedan and Equus flagship, so why not get the shoehorn out and stuff it into the sportscar too?

Lastly, Hyundai showed that it’s (deservedly) willing to toot its own horn a little by building the world’s largest vuvuzela. What’s a vuvuzela? Well, normally it’s a two-foot long trumpet used at World Cup soccer games to give everyone in the immediate vicinity permanent hearing damage. Hyundai’s model is 114 feet long and very, very loud.

successes, Toyota continues to be plagued with misfortune. This week, they’ve announced yet another major recall, this one for excessive fuel leakage on their Lexus HS250h hybrid in the event of a collision.

Also, at a recent shareholder meeting, CEO Akio Toyoda received the following request from a shareholder: “Mr. Toyoda, you’ve been all over the media this year and you’ve gone teary-eyed on several occasions. For a man of your position, this is unacceptable.

Please keep your chin up and try not to weep!”

Despite this advice, it would be difficult not to weep at the latest bad news.

Veteran Toyota test-driver Hiromu Naruse was killed in a head-on collision just outside the Nürburgring, while working on a special edition of the Lexus LFA supercar. Naruse, 67, was involved in the creation of just about every Toyota worth driving, from the 2000GT to the AE86 Corolla, to the Supra and the MR2. He was rumoured to be working on a hybridized MR2 replacement and was almost certainly a driving force behind getting the nowdelayed FT86 lightweight coupe to market.

Update: 11-year-old beats Ferrari F1 driver There’s hope for the future though, as 11-yearold Lance Stroll, who we reported as being signed to Ferrari two weeks ago, has shown just how good his racing chops are.

At a karting event for the whole Ferrari team in Montreal, Lance came out on top after the first round, and was then able to pit his skills against F1 drivers Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso. The result? Well, Ferrari’s being a bit closemouthed about it, but they are saying that Lance came in second. No word as to which of Ferrari’s highly-paid F1 pilots were beaten by the wunderkind, but somebody’s in for some ribbing when they get back to Maranello.

The best part about EcoBoost technology isn’t the increased power, but the fact that it doesn’t incur a penalty in fuel efficiency. Ford does, however, recommend premium fuel for it, and has only made it available on the top-end Limited trim.

The Flex is at its best cruising down the highway and at its worst in parking lots, where its width and length make it cumbersome at best. Its manners are closest to the minivans it seeks to replace, from the relaxed steering and cushy ride to the soft brakes.

Environment There’s a ton of passenger space inside the Flex, which feels positively cavernous up front.

The seats are soft and wide, but surprisingly supportive, making them comfortable for both short and long trips.

The second row can be equipped with either a three-person bench or two sliding bucket seats. Owners opting for the latter configuration can also add a unique refrigerated cooler, which is more useful than it might seem at first blush.

It’s a sign of the times that a power liftgate is standard on all but the base model. What was once a high-end luxury feature is now finding its way into the lower trims.

There are lots of storage spaces in the main cabin, but the glove box and centre-console bin are surprisingly small considering how big the vehicle is. Similarly, there’s really not that much cargo room when the third-row seats are raised, and folding the seats doesn’t leave much height — if you move tall items on a regular basis, this isn’t the car for you.

Features Starting at $32,699, the Flex comes in SE, SEL and Limited models. All-wheel drive is optional on the SEL and standard on Limited models, and the EcoBoost V-6 is only available for the Limited trim. A fully loaded Flex rises well past the $45,000 mark.

Standard equipment on the SE includes ABS, traction control, air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, remote keyless entry, tilt-and-telescope steering, six-speaker CD/ MP3 stereo, steering-mounted audio controls, fog lamps, backup sensors and front/side/sidecurtain airbags.
