North Shore MPs would end gun registry

Saxton: ‘Criminals don’t register their guns’ Benjamin Alldritt

BOTH of the North Shore’s members of Parliament say they will vote to abolish the federal long gun registry, despite both North and West Vancouver’s senior police officers saying the registry is a useful crime-fighting tool. A private member’s bill to abolish the gun registry has passed first and second reading in Parliament and will likely be up for a final vote later this month. “I have sympathy for those who want to keep it, but the reality is that criminals don’t register their guns, nor do they advise us when they move,” said North Vancouver’s Conservative MP Andrew Saxton. “This long gun registry has not been effective. After the registry is gone, owners will still be required to have firearm licences, so police will still know which households have guns because they know who has the firearm licences. The long gun registry puts an unfair burden on farmers and duck hunters and lawabiding citizens.” Saxton also acknowledged that there are few farmers or duck hunters in his riding. “I haven’t met too many,” he said. Saxton’s views clash with those of Supt. Tonia Enger, the officer in charge of the See Local page 3

No foul play in teen’s death Benjamin Alldritt

POLICE investigating the death of 17-year-old Daniel Cho at Capilano Suspension Bridge on Sunday now say there was no criminal act involved.

Arms control

Cho, a high school student visiting from California, fell 30 metres from a lookout platform after climbing over a 1.2-metre high railing. “Cho went over the barrier on the lookout platform under his own power,” said North Vancouver RCMP spokesman Const. Michael McLaughlin in a release. “In spite of the many warning signs and high barriers, Cho had earlier been seen going over similar barriers in a different location and had been warned to stop. Sadly, he did not.” While there were a lot of people present at the bridge, a popular tourist destination, nobody actually saw Cho fall, McLaughlin said, nor did security cameras record the accident. Tall trees, shadows, and the steep terrain in the area blocked the cameras’ view of the accident. “The North Vancouver RCMP spent Monday and Tuesday interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence, and there is no indication of foul play,” McLaughlin said. Police will now hand the investigation into Cho’s death over to the B.C. Coroner’s Office. Cho was one of several students visiting from San Mateo, Calif., as part of a musical exchange program.
