Death knell for NV’s Fromme elementary
Vote for school closure met with tears, anger Benjamin Alldritt balldritt@nsnews.com
STUDENTS, parents and teachers at Fromme elementary had their hopes dashed Tuesday night when North Vancouver school trustees voted 4-3 to close the school this summer.
Trustees voted unanimously to close Plymouth and Blueridge elementary schools last week, but were divided on Fromme and delayed the final vote to Tuesday. The decision is a blow for Fromme parents who campaigned for months to keep the school open and mounted a last-ditch effort to sway trustees during the past week. Several parents left the meeting in tears after the vote. Others angrily confronted the seated trustees before friends steered them towards the exit. “I really thought we had made enough of a difference over the last week to make them see our point,” said parent advisory council chairwoman Heather Skuse after the meeting. Skuse and her colleagues filled Sutherland secondary’s theatre, most of them wearing their campaign green. Some waved placards threatening to take their children to a West Vancouver school and some had signs comparing the number of signatures on their petition to the votes each trustee received when elected. Before the vote, trustees peppered staff with questions about how Fromme students with special needs would be accommodated in other buildings and what that transition would cost. See Bid page 5

JANE Thornthwaite, MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour, was formally charged with impaired driving Wednesday. The first-term Liberal MLA and former school district chairwoman was stopped at a North Vancouver RCMP roadblock at 1 a.m. Feb. 23 while driving home from a party at the Northern House during the Olympic Games. Officers collected a breath sample that allegedly indicated a blood alcohol content of .11 per cent. The legal limit is .08 per cent. Thornthwaite released a statement later that day describing her actions as “inexcusable.” “Drinking and driving is dangerous and completely unacceptable. I know that and make no excuses for what I did,” she said. Thornthwaite promised to cooperate with authorities but said she would not resign from the legislature. On Wednesday, a grim-faced Thornthwaite told reporters she was not surprised or See Accused page 3
