Today’s budget could trigger election

Randy Kamp said he doesn’t feel ‘sense of entitlement’ as MP.

Election talk was on the air waves over the past few days, but MP Randy Kamp, speaking from Ottawa Monday, said many people are still saying it won’t happen now.

A non-confidence vote on the budget could take place on Wednesday or Thursday, Kamp

said, or one on a committee report could take place this week. If the government loses either one, it could trigger an election. If an election is called, Kamp said he would be running a “vigorous campaign.”

“I’ll be running on my record,” Kamp said. “I don’t view the job that I do with any sense of entitlement.”

Maple Ridge Councillor Craig Speirs, the federal NDP candidate said he’s feeling “calm and collected” about a campaign.

Speirs said Kamp has been an

“almost inactive” member of parliament, and that the Conservative government has done a lot to “erode democracy and they have to be held to account.”

“All we have to do is point out their record and stay positive,” he said.

A federal report this week found the minority Conservative government in contempt of Parliament, setting the stage for a showdown this week in the House of Commons.

The report, which blames the government for not sharing information

and spending estimates that MPs said they needed to do their jobs, was adopted by the parliamentary committee of procedure and house affairs after a few hours of review.

However, Kamp said he wasn’t surprised by the report given the government’s minority position because committees are controlled by opposition parties.

The Liberal riding association has a candidate but the name will be released only if an election is called.

Killer recaptured after violent rampage A man who murdered Maple Ridge’s Angela Steer in 2001 and escaped March 10 was back behind bars this weekend.

RCMP are confirming escaped convicted murderer William Bicknell was taken into custody Saturday evening after an armed standoff in northern Alberta.

Bicknell was imprisoned for the second-degree murder of Angela Steer. He killed her with a baseball bat in 2001 in Maple Ridge.

Saturday’s standoff happened just north of Grande Prairie, RCMP spokesman Tim Taniguchi said.

Bicknell, 42, has been on the run since March 10, when he escaped from custody by overpowering a guard during a drive back to Drumheller Institution following a visit with his sister in Edmonton.

While he was on the run, Bicknell allegedly held a 72-year-old Sherwood Park man hostage for 10 hours in Vegreville.

In connection with that incident, police have laid new charges of kidnapping with a firearm, unlawful confinement with a firearm, pointing a gun, and break and enter.

The story and legacy of Albion Hall will live on in a future facility but the old building will soon be gone.

The hall will be transferred to the District of Maple Ridge’s ownership at the end of March, and it will be torn down as bringing it up

to municipal standards would be too costly, according to Kelly Swift, general manager with parks and leisure services.

“Our intention is to work with the Maple Ridge Historical Society to see if there are any elements (to keep) for the new Albion Hall,” Swift said. The Albion Community Club is donating the land and building, assessed at $315,500, to the District.

Maple Ridge councillor Craig Speirs, however, expressed concern about the lack of space in Albion.

One of the adult men connected to the ‘One Night in Bangkok’ rave last year, appeared in court on March 17, and will be back early next year for his trial.

Colton Ashton McMorris, 18, of Maple Ridge, is charged with sexual assault.

His trial is set to begin in Port Coquitlam on Feb. 27 2012, and is scheduled for three weeks.

A second adult, Dennis John Allen Warrington, a 19-year-old from Langley – who also has strong ties to Maple Ridge – is charged with producing and distributing child pornography.

He is set to appear in court on April 7 for an arraignment hearing.

A 16-year-old, who is also charged with producing and distributing child pornography, will appear in court on March 22 for an application to vary his bail.

He cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The alleged incident took place on a Harris Road property last September, and photos of the assault appeared online and were shared on Facebook.

Making strides in safety Legion executive makes District aware of residents’ crosswalk concerns.

The crosswalk located at 224th Street and 121st Avenue in Maple Ridge is in the process of being made safer for pedestrians.

What was called “an exhausting effort

by Annette Morgan,” an executive member of the Maple Ridge branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, helped the municipality take notice of the unsafe crosswalk and allow for changes to take place.

Morgan said the combination of harassing Mayor Ernie Daykin and the Maple Ridge engineering department, and doing

her own research and number-gathering on the intersection, is what finally made the municipality sympathetic of the issue at hand.

“I did a little homework and it paid off,” said Morgan.

She said what was once a dangerous walk between the two streets, particularly for seniors living in the area, is now being illuminated and well-marked to help prevent drivers from speeding through.

“This is now a safer option for seniors to get to the Legion,” said Morgan.

“I have to give kudos to [municipal] hall. They listened to what I had to say.”

Morgan has been working to get the crosswalk updated since October 2009.

Engineer Michael Eng said the completion date for the crosswalk depends on when the new metal poles are delivered.

Police blotter

Two attacked in west Maple Ridge Two men could be charged with assault after an attack Friday night.

A Maple Ridge man was picking up his girlfriend on Dartford Street in Hammond, just before midnight on March 18, and two men allegedly assaulted him when he got there.

Police said the two suspects also allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, and damaged the young man’s car.

Ridge Meadows RCMP were called and the two men were arrested at the scene, and then later released.

Neither victim was seriously injured.

The Pitt farmers’ market will open in Spirit Square on Father’s Day.

Pitt Meadows council will front $6,890 to ensure the Pitt Meadows Farmers’ Market can proceed this summer. But it’s a onetime offer.

Market manager Eileen Dwillies said, this grant, along with one from Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services, and Vancity, will allow the farmers’ market to take place for 13 weeks in Spirit Square.

“Until more permanent funding sources can be found,” she added.

“The Pitt Meadows Farmers’ Market in Spirit Square will provide the citizens of Pitt Meadows and visitors to the community with opportunities to buy fresh healthy food,” said Christine DiGiamberardine, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services staff liaison. “[People can also] meet local farmers, attend cooking demonstrations, enjoy local entertainment, [and] participate in children’s activities,” she added.

Dwillies said that the pilot year in Osprey Village was “highly successful,” but the Spirit Square location is more accessible, and will hopefully draw more shoppers.

“Although the prime focus of all farmers’ markets is to provide a venue for local farmers to have the opportunity to skip the middle man... it is more than that to the community as a whole,” she said.

“Money is kept in the local neighbourhood as shoppers typically visit other businesses nearby.”

She added that the Haney Farmers’ Market Society are looking forward to a successful market, and that many vendors have already expressed “significant interest” in the event, and familiar faces will be returning.

The Pitt Meadows Farmers’ Market will be held on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., from June 19 to Sept. 11, in Spirit Square on Harris Road Opening ceremonies start at 12 p.m. on June 19.

An eagle has landed in Maple Ridge.

Thanks to the Maple Ridge Lions Club and local artist Rhonda Laurie, a new sculpture has been installed downtown.

The Sea to Sky eagle was unveiled to a gathering crowd in front of the RCMP offices and municipal hall on Friday.

Those who attended included the sculpture’s painter Laurie, Maple Ridge Lions

Club president Ray Morrissette, Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin, and municipal communication officer Fred Armstrong.

Before unveiling the finished sculpture, Laurie and Morrissette presented a miniature version of what was about to be revealed. It was a miniature eagle, also painted by Laurie.

The eagle is part of a public art initiative meant to bring public art to public spaces, which already includes a vine-like structure called Tendance located in Spirit Square. “[It] shows potential for using art pieces to communicate the spirit of the community,” Armstrong said.

Nuclear future still unclear Whatever the eventual outcome of the crisis at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi power plant, the events that continue to unfold there will have important repercussions around the world.

Those repercussions will go beyond the immediate health concerns being carried with radiation from the power station; they will educate, for good or bad, formerly complacent people about the pros and cons of nuclear energy.

There is little doubt that Japan’s problems will reignite the debate here in Canada over the use of nuclear power as a viable and supposedly “clean” energy source.

While the discussion is necessary, it’s vital that it be cool-headed.

The images coming out of Japan of exploding containment structures, fleeing workers, and clouds of radioactive steam appear to put the lie to claims we have heard for years from proponents that nuclear power is safe.

Dozens of people have been contaminated to varying degrees, and if the worst-case-scenario – a full meltdown – plays out, the toll will be far higher.

Already the European Union is reviewing its energy policy in response, and it’s not unlikely Canada will follow suit.

To see a plant that Japan deemed to be safe fail in the face of an expected natural disaster is certainly alarming, but before we let that fear drive us away from nuclear technology, we have to consider the alternatives.

In much of Canada and in many parts of the world, the most viable forms of non-nuclear energy production involve the burning of fossil fuels. The gases released by those processes are changing our planet’s climate, pushing us toward a catastrophe on a scale that dwarfs anything that could result from a meltdown in Japan.

As horrific as the unfolding disaster in Japan may be, there are lessons to be learned and value to be had in the learning.

Reviewing our nuclear policy and revisiting the safety and placement of our plants is sensible, but turning our backs on the technology, without careful consideration, could prove to be disastrously foolish.

Wage change detrimental Dear editor,

I currently work at a low-paying job, like many other British Colombians, yet I was absolutely repulsed to hear of the upcoming minimum wage increase.

North America has spent years struggling with a recession, and now that we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, Christy Clark decides to drop a boulder in front of it.

Employers are struggling as it is to pay their employees, with barely enough left over to pay the bills.

I was pleased to read how the B.C. minimum wage issue is finally being addressed.

After dealing with Campbell and his politicians in government (PIG) sessions putting their snouts in the public trough, and ignoring the 250,000 B.C.ers getting the minimum rates of pay for more than 10 years, this is a step in the right direction.

Now the $6 million question is… What Liberal wrongs are you going to right next?

When minimum wage increases by more than $2/hour, these employers will either go on a firing spree or simply declare bankruptcy – leaving fewer and fewer jobs to go around.

On another note: It is very common to have management positions in businesses such as retail, that have an hourly wage of $10/hour, while their young trainees make $8.

It is completely ridiculous to imagine a teenager starting his first ever four-hour shift at McDonald’s, and making the same amount of money as his boss, who’s been there for 10 years, and had to earn his $10/hour the hard way: work ethic.

The fact is: Those who are making $8/ hour completely deserve it.

Christy Clark didn’t do her homework on this one.

At the risk of entering another recession, she decided to win the hearts of British Columbians by pretending to care.

What she didn’t take into consideration is that those hearts she has won are not even of legal voting age.

It’s time to start pleasing the voters, Christy, instead of the 14-year-old girl doing her nails at the drive-through, who recognizes you as the one who invented the Oreo.

Museum unveils big 2011 plans More programs, events, and exhibits are coming to Pitt Meadows Museum.

As the cars roar down Harris Road, a little white building, beside the West Coast Express station, stands as a record of Pitt Meadows’ history.

The Pitt Meadows Museum holds many artifacts and exhibits about what the community was like more than a century ago, and at last Tuesday night’s council meeting, curator Leslie Norman and Pitt Meadows Society president Annette Code spoke on the highlights of 2010, and what residents can look forward to in 2011.

“Heritage Thursdays were a success,” said Norman, “and we took in some really interesting collections last year.”

One collection was related to the McMyn family, including a letter written in the 1880s.

“We’ve also had a really dedicated

volunteer who has been re-vamping our research files for us,” said Norman, “and we now have two or three new exhibit areas.”

The museum has also started its second ‘community memories’ project, which is Canada-wide and available on the Internet. In addition, residents can look forward to a transportation exhibit opening this year.

“We had items donated from CP Rail,” said Norman.

This year, Heritage Thursdays will consist of topics relating to science. Norman said staff and a student volunteer will be working on the signage for their heritage garden. The Sunday family programs will also continue.

“The biggie the public won’t really see,” said Norman, “is that we are going to undertake an archival storage project.

This will make collections more accessible to the staff and volunteers.”

The museum is also putting on its annual Heritage Tea on April 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Old Heritage Hall.

The library has proven to be a central meeting place for the Maple Ridge community. Many community groups use the two upstairs meeting rooms. The library has also increased its programming over the past 10 years.

Preschool story times has always been a major focus.

They are up to four story times a week in the library, plus a successful baby time.

Over the past few years, library staff have worked hard to provide fun activities for school-aged children and preteens. Innovative programs such as Wacky Wednesday, Friday Fun Club, knitting classes and movie nights attract large numbers of stu-

A student library council plans and participates in programs such as multicultural food fairs, teen quiz night and teaching adults how to use electronic gadgets. Adults are attracted to programs about health and wellness, author events, the annual Friends of the Library quiz night and book sale, and local programs of interest.

The Maple Ridge Public Library was the first completed

phase of the Maple Ridge Town Centre, and includes a youth centre and performing arts centre, the ACT. The library’s grand opening reception was held on March 16, 2001.

With 37,000 square feet distributed over two floors, the Maple Ridge Public Library remains the largest library in the Fraser Valley Regional Library system. The old library, which was just a short distance away on Dewdney

Trunk Road, was much smaller at 15,000 square feet.

When it opened in 2001, the new library almost doubled the shelving space of the old library. The new library also increased opening hours to include Sundays and Mondays, making the library more accessible to the community.

The Maple Ridge Public Library has been able to take advantage of its proximity to the Memorial Peace Park.

Special summer reading club programs are attended by hundreds of children as well as their parents. The library also holds a series of Puppets in the Park shows during the summer, which are well attended.

When the new library opened there were more than 40 computers for public Internet use, word processing and library catalogue, including a 15-station computer lab. Now it is common to see 10 or 12 people working on their own laptops throughout the library. Who would have thought in 2001 that there might be a shortage of electrical outlets in the library 10 years down the road?

The Maple Ridge Public Library is proud to be a central part of the Maple Ridge downtown core. We welcome everyone to visit us not just on our anniversary celebration but all year long.

The official 10th anniversary celebration ceremony with dignitaries and cake cutting will be at noon in the downstairs lobby. Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon.

At 1 p.m., following the official ceremony, the always popular Trollsons present The One-Eyed Troll, a mask play based on Scandinavian folklore.

Kids can show off their creativity at the craft extravaganza table between 12:30 and 3 p.m.

Watch out for roving magicians The Magic Boyes as they perform their magic tricks.

The Emerald Pig Theatrical Society will provide a sneak peek of its upcoming production Anne from Anne of Green Gables.

Discover foods and crafts from other cultures at the Multicultural Food and Craft Fair from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Fraser Room.

Watch for French Canadian and Metis Denis Leclerc as he roves the library and sings of the voyageurs and the Metis Buffalo Hunters.

There will be draws for door prizes throughout the day and staff will be on hand to welcome the community.

The BC SPCA is urging everyone to think about adopting a small pet from a shelter, rather than going to the pet store to bring home that new furry critter.

Aside from the many cats and dogs needing homes, Maple Ridge shelter manager Mark Vosper said they get a number of smaller pets, including mice, rats, hamsters, chinchillas, and even birds, but mostly they get rabbits.

“We have a very nice rabbit at the moment,” said Vosper.

Along with the other organizations that deal with small animal rescues, the BC SPCA wants to make sure people are aware that even a small pet can mean a lot of work.

“People get them thinking they are just cuddly pets,” said Vosper, “but they do take work, and there is a smell element to them. Plus they can have babies.”

The BC SPCA Vancouver branch said small animals are “frequently left at SPCA branches when pet guardians become tired of caring for them or find themselves with unexpected litters due to lack of education about spaying and neutering small pets.”

Vosper warned that smaller animals, such as rabbits, do not always make the best pets for children.

“When you buy it, it’s a bundle of fluff that sits on your hand,” he said. “But as they grow they get strong back legs and can kick and scratch a small child.”

“They’re complex little creatures.”

The BC SPCA urges people to think of them or other small animal rescue organizations as the “first adoption option.”

Struggling single dad gets a little help

Gesture from staff of local grocery store provides a boost for father of three sons.

A small gesture can go a long way – especially for a Maple Ridge man raising three young sons.

Chris Pilkey is a single dad raising three boys: Evan, eight, Daniel, six, and Michael, four.

Pilkey has been off work since Feb. 16 due to poor health and is currently waiting for his first Employment Insurance cheque to arrive. He has dropped 20 pounds, and has no energy. Doctors are trying to determine what is ailing him.

“We want to find out what it is, physically and health-wise, and just carry on,” Pilkey said. “It’s been

With his day-to-day chal-

lenges, every little bit of goodwill helps, so when Pilkey recently used a $100 certificate from the Ministry of Children and Family Development for groceries, he was pleas-

antly surprised, after staff from the Safeway at 20201 Lougheed Hwy. delivered the items to his home at no charge.

“We don’t have a vehicle so we take public transit to and from school and daycare,” he said. “The lady at Safeway offered to drive the groceries back to us, so I didn’t have to pay the $12 fee.”

Pilkey said the good deed was “awesome.”

“I couldn’t believe it. She didn’t have to do that,” he said. “The staff at Safeway all came together and said, ‘Hey, what if we do this for you?’ It was unbelievable because I didn’t have the energy to carry all those groceries back.”

Pilkey said saving even $12 on the delivery charge is huge.

Another business helping the family is Warrior Spirit Martial Arts, which is offering free taekwondo lessons to Pilkey’s sons.

Theatre

Early 1900s items needed Emerald Pig Theatrical Society is putting on Anne this April.

It’s not easy to find items from, or reminiscent of turn-of-the-century Canada, and a local theatre group is reaching out to the public to help find some specific props.

The Emerald Pig Theatrical Society is staging the classic tale of Anne by Paul Ledoux, based on the classic, Anne of Green Gables, but they are missing some important pieces to help the play come alive.

The group needs a man’s pipe, a child’s cradle, two wicker porch chairs, and an old wooden boat – five-to-six-feet-long with low sides.

“That’s the big one,” said Wendy Cook, the props manager for the show. “[The boat] sinks during the play,” she added, “so it does not have to be too sea-worthy.”

Cook said she has all the other props, with some help from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows museums.

“We even had someone make the old carpet bag for us,” she said, which Anne uses in the early part of the play.

“We’ve got wigs and period costumes from the museum,” and

Competition

Fame West comes to the ACT Two locals will be taking part in a bodybuilding and fitness competition this weekend.

Lonnie Bisson woke up one morning in February 2010, and decided she needed to change her life.

“I wanted to get healthy, change my lifestyle, lose weight,” she said.

She is now 102 pounds lighter, and will be one of many competitors at the 2011 Fame West bodybuilding show this Saturday in Maple Ridge.

For Bisson, this will be the first time she has competed in a competition of this nature. She said she is pushing aside her fears of being in a bikini in front of strangers, and just going for it.

“I’m 46 years old,” she said laughing. “Do you want to know the last time I wore a bikini?”

The tailored swimsuit is just the beginning. Bisson also has to deal with five-inch heels, jewelry, a spray tan, stage makeup and maintaining perfect hair and nails — all for less than half an hour on the stage.

“It’s a lot of work,” she said. “I feel like I’m getting married.”

Bisson will be the first one to admit this has not been an easy venture. She said she could not have done it without the help of her trainer and friend Jenny Arnold, of the Jenny Arnold Movement in Maple Ridge.

“Jenny has been awesome,” she said. “She phones me, she texts me, she keeps me motivated.”

“I have a great support system,” she added. “I have a great family, and my friends have been amazing.”

Bisson started with three days of exercise the first week, then four days the second week, and by the fourth week she was working out five days a week.

“Since January it’s been seven days a week,” she said, “and for the last four weeks it’s been two hours a day.”

As anyone who is trying to lose weight and get in shape knows, exercise is just the beginning.

Bisson has kept to a strict diet since January to prepare for Fame West, and has been “eating clean” since she started this process.

“Right now I’m craving a burger,” she laughed. “The Sunday after the competition I’m allowed to have a nice dinner. I don’t know what that will be though.”

She is looking forward to the competition being over, so she can say she has done it, but this is not the end of the road for her.

She wants to continue to lose weight and get healthy.

“It’s life changing,” she said.

“Don’t think you can’t do it.”

Bisson will be able to get tips and advice from Marina Zimmerman, who competed in Las Vegas last year, and is now entering her second bodybuilding and fitness show.

Like Bisson, Zimmerman want-

ed to do something for herself when she started training, but she also wants to set a good example for her two children and for other mothers wanting to get in shape.

“There’s so many mothers out there that think once you have kids your body is done,” she said.

“My goal is, I want to open up a gym and work with mostly moms,” she continued. “Give them a boost, help them feel very comfortable in their own skin.”

For now, Zimmerman is focusing on Fame West, and sticking to a strict diet and exercise routine. In the off-season she trains four times a week, but prior to competition she works out four times a week with weights, and four to six times a week doing cardio after “one intense hour of

weights.”

“Diet for me is 70 per cent of the end result,” she said. “Prior to competition, everything in moderation,” and for the last four weeks she has cut out dairy, sugar, and fruit.

“Again it’s the portion size,” she said. “You can’t have four, five slices of pizza,” she laughed.

Zimmerman has had experience on the stage posing in a bikini for judges before, but she admits she was nervous the first time.

“I’m a very self-conscious person,” she said. “I thought everyone was going to be gawking at me, but it was a completely different atmosphere. It was more comfortable than being at the beach.”

Just like Bisson, Zimmerman said she could not have done it without her support network, and most of all, her husband.

“I was proud of myself, and I could see my husband was proud of me,” she said.

At the Maple Ridge show, she wants to place top three in her categories of fitness model and muscle model, and is looking for sponsorship so she can continue competing.

“I think the show is incredible,” she said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity, especially if you’re a future trainer. It’s a great way to show your goals.”

Fame West takes place Saturday at The ACT in Maple Ridge.

Judging starts at 9 a.m., with the finals at 7 p.m.

Cudas take banner A local girls hockey team was victorious on March 8. The Meadow Ridge Midget Barracudas defeated the Abbotsford Ice 4-3 to win the Playoff Championship Banner.

After falling behind 2-0 early in the first period, coach Joe Legassic said the girls managed to battle back to tie it in the second period with two unassisted goals by team captain Breanna Josephison.

Although Abbotsford again went ahead by one goal, Barracuda forward, Alysha Cloete, blasted a slap shot by the Abbotsford goalie, the coach added.

Stein wins three Three Maple Ridge residents competed for the Surrey Knights at the provincial swim meet on March 5.

Local boy Nathan Stein raced to his senior national time in the 50-metre freestyle at the provincial swim meet for the Surrey Knights swim team.

He clocked a time of 23.27, and ended up with a gold medal, and two silver medals for his efforts.

Two others also competed.

The Pitt Meadows Marauders Air Force targeted a top-four finish at the 66th annual B.C. Boys Triple A basketball championships, which wrapped up Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

In the words of TV character Maxwell Smart, they “missed it by that much.”

The Marauders went 4-1 during the March 15-19 tournament, but had to settle for fifth place in the 20-team tournament.
