More in need of help this holiday

The local food bank and Christmas hamper stay well stocked thanks to grassroots fundraisers and big events that bring in food, toys, and cash during the season. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Demand at local charities is up this Christmas – both the food bank and Christmas hamper society are noticing an upward trend in the community. The number of families registering with the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society has already exceeded the number from last year – and requests are coming in daily. In addition, demand is up by 10 per cent at the Friends In Need Food Bank. But Santa will come, said Lorraine Bates, director of the Christmas hamper society, even if the society has to dip into reserves like they did last year. “Everybody will be taken care of,” she said. The hamper society aims to buy children and teens who are registered with them the things they’re wishing for and not just any gifts. “We want to treat them like

our kids,” she said, adding that they “go the extra smile” because “every Christmas should be special.” Bates estimates there will be 600 families registered with the society by the end of the Christmas season, up from a total of 568 last year. The total for 2009 was a hundred more than in 2008. Demand for food hampers is up about 10 per cent this year, said Joanne Olson, executive director of the Friends In Need Food Bank. “I just think the whole economic downturn has trickled down to hit everybody,” she said. While businesses may be doing better, it doesn’t seem like they’re hiring yet, Olson added. The food bank has 2,850 regular clients and give out 575 monthly hampers. She often gets calls from families who are working but still not making ends meet. This Friday evening’s CPR Holiday Train is the biggest fundraising event of the year for the Friends In Need Food Bank (see related story below). But a large part of the food donations that are distributed by the food bank come from small community fundraisers, Olson said. The Christmas hamper society depends on a variety of fundraisers that help garner funds

Food bank benefits as train rolls in Friday night Spectators are asked to bring $5 and cans of food to Port Haney.

Jennifer Johnson and Darlene Miller volunteer with the Friends In Need Food Bank.

The second last stop for the crossCanada CP Rail Holiday Train will be in Port Haney, and food bank organizers are hoping the community will come out in droves to fill up their food depot. Last year, residents from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows donated the most of all the stops the train made across Canada with a grand total of $18,833 in donations.

The train event raises about 10 per cent of the food bank’s annual budget. Joanne Olson, executive director of the Friends In Need Food Bank is hoping everyone will donate $5 and a few cans of food at the holiday train – “that would be a good day,” she said. The holiday train rolls into the Port Haney station on Friday at 7:45 p.m. There will be music by The Odds on a stage on one of the train cars. The food bank will be collecting cash and food donations. Juice, baby food and formula, canned fish and meat are some of the most necessary items. During the holiday train event, the Billy Miner pub will be serving hot chocolate and hot dogs, which can be

bought by donation and The Odds will be selling their CD at the holiday train event for $10 – all proceeds will go to the Friends In Need Food Bank. The holiday train includes two brightly decorated freight trains each decorated with thousands of lights. The train began its journey on Nov. 27 in Beaconsville, Que. On its journey, the train will stop in more than 140 communities to help raise money and food for local food banks. Since 1999, the CP Holiday Train has raised $4.8 million and has generated almost 2.3 million pounds of food donations. All donations stay in the community where they’re collected.

ingerbread dough, royal icing, candy and a whole lot of other edible goodies got culinary students at Garibaldi Secondary into the festive season this year with their annual gingerbread house competition. In the end, a gingerbread house with a lighthouse next to it was chosen by students and staff as the best structure, a creation made by aspiring chef Andrew Zucchetto. The entries were judged by students – they were able to see them in the cafeteria and fill out a sheet of paper giving points for originality, craftsmanship and overall appearance and design. The biggest challenge for the students is to envision what the

Firefighters in Pitt Meadows were called out to two mysterious fires, one on Friday night and another Saturday. Both appeared to have been set purely to cause havoc. Pitt Meadows fire chief Don Jolley said he thinks it is likely youth lighting the fires, and he wants to appeal to the public for help, especially in the case of a port-a-potty being set ablaze in the Pitt Meadows athletic park. The fire department was called out Friday, at about 10 p.m., for the tenth time over the past few years, and once again the port-apotty was completely destroyed. The park is located at the corner of Bonson Road and Airport Way, and Jolley hopes someone who is living down there saw something. “We’d like to hear any information on it,” said Jolley. “We don’t want that kind of thing causing an accident.” On Saturday, around 11 p.m., firefighters were called to Pitt Meadows Elementary, after someone set a fire in the covered area outside. That caused the school sprinkler system to go off, which resulted in extensive damage that cost the school board more money to fix. This could not have happened accidentally, Jolley said. “These are frustrating issues to say the least,” he elaborated. “It’s affecting budgets at a time when neither [parks and rec nor the school board] has a ton of money.” Anyone with possible information about these arsons can call the Pitt Meadows fire department at 604-465-2401, or the Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604463-6251.

Greybrook settlement rejected

Thirteen parties have filed in small claims court against the defunct private school. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Greybrook parents and staff didn’t accept an offer made Thursday to settle lost tuition and wages after the private school closed more than a year ago. An offer made to parents by the society that ran Greybrook Academy was rejected and the claims will go to a pretrial hearing on Jan. 11. “It was less than what we were initially seeking,” said Chris Jack, a parent who lost part of his child’s tuition when the school shut down.

“That offer wasn’t supported by parents,” Jack said. Greybrook Academy closed on Dec. 1, 2009, after the school ran into financial difficulties. The school was run by the Vancouver International Primary and Secondary School Society (VIPSSS). The spirit of small claims court is to get the parties together to negotiate a settlement, Jack said, but that wasn’t the outcome last week. While a monetary offer was made, parents didn’t feel any assurance they would see any cash. “There was no actual guarantee that we’d get any money,” Jack said about the offer made. He was hoping there would be a settlement during the appearance at Port Coquitlam courthouse Thursday, but said what was offered

was unacceptable. Parents were able to read out impact statements at the settlement conference. Jack told the TIMES his daughter was “absolutely thriving” at Greybrook Academy, and when the school closed down it impacted her learning development. GEMS America, a private school operator made an offer – before it closed – to buy the school. But it was rejected by the society. Then, VIPSSS attempt to reopen the school again in the spring, but it didn’t succeed. In all, there were 13 claims made against the school by parents and staff. The society’s director Nigel Turner didn’t return calls by TIMES’ presstime.

Holiday cheer

Fund helps get drinkers home The Fox’s Reach joins others in the industry in helping finance the gas expenses for Operation Red Nose. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

The number of people phoning Operation Red Nose (ORN) for a safe ride home has already risen dramatically since last year. And while this is good thing, more rides means more gas, which means more money, and local pubs and restaurants already seem to be losing plenty of that. In an effort to help with the rising cost of gas and transportation, the Alliance of Beverage Licensees of British Columbia (ABLE BC), which includes a local pub the Fox’s Reach, will contribute $5,000 to a 2010 gas fund. “[Operation Red Nose] is a good program, it always has been,” said Reach owner Al Arbuthnot, “and we’re a part of the community and it’s good to give back to your community.” Arbuthnot said this program is needed more than ever now that the legal alcohol limit has changed from .08 to .05. He said the change in his business is “enormous, unbelievable.” “I can honestly say I’ve been in this business for 35 years and nothing, absolutely nothing, has affected it more than changing [the allowed liquor amount] from .08 to .05,” said Arbuthnot. He said that pubs and bars have lost the social drinker. “What is .05?” asked Arbuthnot. “Is that one glass of wine, or is it two beers? Who

knows?” He said part of the problem stems from how the new drinking and driving laws were launched. “It was poorly brought in, there was no education around it,” he said. The Fox’s Reach has already been active in offering customers an alternative ride home, with the implementation of a free shuttle service, which Arbuthnot said can make 15 to 20 trips on weekend nights – they even pick people up and then take them home at the end of the night. With the added benefit of a new gas fund, customers should feel that they have an alternative to getting in their car at the end of a night out. “We’re proud to be the first to sponsor the Operation Red Nose gas fund in British Columbia,” said ABLE BC president Al McCreary. “As the owners and operators of B.C.’s pubs, it’s always been a top priority to get customers home safely.” An average of 45 per cent more people have been calling ORN so far this year than last year, and it is expected that more will continue to do so as the holiday celebrations mount up. “Services like Operation Red Nose are critical to help people to celebrate the holidays responsibly with family and friends,” said McCreary. “We encourage everyone to enjoy some holiday cheer, but make sure you do so responsibly by planning how to get home first.” The remaining nights of Operation Red Nose service in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meaodws are Dec. 17, 18, and 31 and service is available from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. each night by calling 604-514-6673.

Our View

The wrong records are being broken There are a few things sadder than a child with an empty stocking on Christmas morning… but not many. This is shaping up to be an empty Christmas for a lot of children in the communities that comprise Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. And that means Christmas will also be a cold place to be for their mothers and/or fathers. The continuing recession has taken its toll, as Canada appears to be catching up to the rest of world in failing businesses and rising jobless rates. While some politicians at the federal and provincial levels boast about the country’s economic resilience and cheer about job-creation statistics during those weeks when the numbers rise a bit, the reality is that many of the jobs “created” leave those lucky enough to get them still in poorer shape than when the world economic collapse began at the end of 2008. Even among many of those who have jobs, money is short. And those hardships come home to roost when Christmas rolls around. They show up in the numbers of famlies registering at the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society and at the Friends In Need Food Bank, and they show up in the decline in donations available to the volunteers who struggle to meet the needs of the community. The Christmas Hamper Society and Food Bank volunteers are breaking records this year – but the records they are breaking are the ones they’d really like to avoid. As of Monday, they already had more families than ever before pleading for help to make it through Christmas this year, and the numbers have been increasing daily. There’s little time left to do all the work that needs doing to spread the joy this season. It would be a nice Christmas present from the community to its volunteers if they could also have a record-breaking year for donations. – B.G.

Charity

Prostitutes should give, too Dear editor,

Wayne Clark’s diatribe [Re: Seasonal hypocrisy, Dec. 7 Letters, The TIMES] against all the pious, self-righteous prudes in Maple Ridge leaves me with the impression he suffers from a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde syndrome. Last week he was spitting poison at MLA Marc Dalton and this week he’s licking the boots of performers at the world-famous CaddyShack, when they’re wearing them. If it’s legality upon which he bases his knee-jerk reaction to seasonal hypocrites, then why not appeal to all the prostitutes out there to get with the program and show their generosity and selflessness too. It’s legal, they make big money, and surely can afford to match whatever an exotic dancer would contribute.

Would Mr. Clark care to debate the exploitative nature of prostitution, the tragic legacy of Port Coquitlam’s pig farm, or the irrefutable fact that women who perform in front of, or service men are selling themselves for sex? I doubt it. The real hypocrisy is the two-faced nature of his cheering on exotic dancers when elements in our society, overwhelmingly men, continue to treat women – no matter how fleetingly – as objects of sex. I don’t applaud the efforts of exotic dancers during the Christmas season. The money they raise is a drop in the bucket compared to other “legal” initiatives. Guess that makes me a prude.

These pictures were taken near the North Alouette Bridge last month. After a hunter’s gunfire rang out, this walker found shells and duck remains.

Gun laws

Hunting must be banned Dear editor,

I was walking with my dog just past North Alouette Bridge on Neaves Road on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 7:45 a.m. We had just started on the dike path when a shot rang out, and I watched a lone duck flying out of harm’s way at a height that no shotgun pellet could reach. I continued walking with my dog, and I observed a lone hunter carrying a shotgun walking on the path on the other side of the dike. I also noticed that he had no dog in tow. At this moment, the duck decided to fly back to its original position. When the hunter noticed this, he immediately dropped to his knee and pointed his gun. The duck was flying toward me and over my head, at which time I closed my eyes, expecting to be showered with shotgun pellets. Thankfully, the hunter realized that I would probably have been in dire straits had he fired his gun. I was speechless. As I walked further up the dike, I came across empty shotgun shell cartridges, as well as a carcass of a duck lying in the middle of the frozen pond, obviously shot but not retrieved. I thought that any hunter worth his salt hunted with a dog in order to retrieve his game. I guess firing a gun and killing fowl, and letting it rot or be

eaten by other animals is fair game for a shotgun-wielding varmint. I thought that council, other than discussing whether God is going to bless them or not before they talk council business, had better start getting serious about taking care of their constituency. The Haney of yesterday is no longer. The population growth, as well as the spread of suburbia, are now demanding changes in habits. It is time to remove hunting from our surroundings. The dikes are meant for the populace to walk and enjoy what little nature there is left. We should not have to run into “testosteronefired” individuals with guns in their hands ready to shoot at anything that moves. The modern generation does not need to shoot ducks in order to eat. I can see if you were out in the bush and just relied on a shot-filled carcass for survival, but these days everyone shops at the local stores for groceries. The time has come to ban shooting along the dikes. I know that this is the so-called “Holy Grail” for those who own shotguns, but there are gun ranges where you can show your friends how good your aim is. My challenge to council and the populace is to bring an end to this senseless “tradition.”

The goals were mounting and the teddy bears were flying during a weekend of triumph for the Ridge Meadows team.

by Amy Judd With a level of dedication that would make most adults throw in the towel, eight-year-old Maple Ridge resident Kayla Sullivan eats, sleeps and breathes skating. She travels to Coquitlam six days a week to practise, she studies ballet and jazz and she works out and stretches with her father, who is also a skater and a hockey instructor for NHL players. “She never gets tired of it,” said her father James Sullivan, who explained that his daughter has to eat well and get lots of sleep but that they make plenty of time for play and relaxation. When asked what she likes most about skating Kayla said the spins. She also said she likes to watch Olympic figure skaters spin on the ice. The Laity View Elementary student has been skating for about five-and-a-half years and as her father is such an avid skater it seems it was inevitable she would take up the sport. “It was my wife who really wanted her to try figure skating,” laughed James. Now his daughter “She never gets can add another tired of it.” medal to the colJames Sullivan lection in her room with her recent win at the Jingle Blades competition. She competed against 14 other girls in the pre-preliminary ladies 8-andunder category, and her father said this year she was even prouder as she did not place that well last year in the same competition, which was also her first. “She was devastated,” said Sullivan, “so this was another try at her first competition, a kind of redemption.” Confidence is not a problem for Kayla however, and even though she did not place well last year, she knew she was going to redeem herself this time. She did just that in the best way possible and is now moving forward with axels, her “big-girl jumps” as her dad called them, and she has big dreams for the future. “She dreams of the Olympics like all the other kids,” said James, “but we [her mother and I] have no expectations. We just want her to stay healthy and be active.” The young skater now gets a little break for Christmas but will still be training and preparing for her next quarterly competition. Her parents are naturally proud of their little girl. “My favourite part of the day is watching her,” said James.

Kayla Sullivan beamed with pride after her first win at the Jingle Blades competition.

The local junior B team has continued its winning streak this month, with two more wins under the belt against the Richmond Sockeyes and the Squamish Wolf Pack. Ridge Meadows Flames won its game against the Sockeyes 3-2 Friday at Planet Ice, where Ridge goalie Mackenzie Skapski was named the first star of the game after managing 44 shots on net and only letting in two. The Flames only managed 25 shots on the opponents’ net, but still won with goals from Sean Kavanagh and two from Paul Piluso –who was named the second star of the game. “I was very happy,” said coach Tavis Eaton. “You always go in [to the weekend] trying to get the first one and Richmond was hard because they are such a good hockey team.” The Flames kept the penalty count low on Friday with just a few for hooking and tripping, but the same could not be said of Saturday’s game against Squamish. The Flames dominated the game with a final score of 8-2, but in the third period, Joey Weilmeier got a five-minute penalty for fighting and a 10minute penalty for game misconduct. Then, just over three minutes Tavis Eaton later, Alexander Smith received Flames coach the same duo of penalties for fighting. The fighting didn’t bother Eaton however, who said “their guys might have been upset their team were losing” and decided to fight it out. “It wasn’t going to make much difference in the game,” he said, noting the fights were in the third period and the Flames still scored three to win. Along with the Flames’ double wins, the team still found time to host its annual teddy bear toss and food bank drive. Locals and fans who attended Friday’s game threw four large recycling bags full of teddy bears on the ice. Those will be donated to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, and Flames owner Andrew Ilaender thought it may be the most successful drive year yet. “It’s good to see that people were supporting [the cause],” Eaton said. The team’s food bank drive continues at this Friday’s game, again against the Wolf Pack. For every pound of food donated to the Friends In Need Food Bank in total, the Flames will donate an additional $1. Eaton said the bin already looks like it is filling up.

ajudd@mrtimes.com

The successful cycling team at Local Ride racing team is partnering with Dr. Vie Superfoods+ to create a powerhouse women’s cycling team that will be ready to compete next year. “I’m pleased that Local Ride Bike Shop will once again play a role in supporting some of Canada’s top female cyclists as they strive to reach their goals and potentially represent Canada at the 2012 Olympics,” said Local Ride Bike Shop owner Barry Lyster. Lyster has worked hard to promote women’s cycling over the past five years and wants to set his sights on forming one of the top women’s road teams in Canada.

“Mother Vie [Dr. Vie Superfoods+ chairwoman] and I are thrilled to support our team of amazing young Canadian cyclists,” said Dr. Vie, CEO and scientist. “They are incredible role models for young girls and children in Canada and around our planet,” she said. This elite women’s racing team will compete across Canada, with members Laura Brown and Steph Roorda striving to represent Canada at world cups and world championships. They then hope to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Brown and Roorda recently competed with the fastest women in the world at the first UCI Track Cycling World Cup of the season in Melbourne, Australia and have the potential to be serious medal contenders, according to Lyster. The women’s road and track racing squad will include Laura Brown, Steph Roorda, Jasmin Glaesser, Jessica Hannah, Jenny Lehmann, Rachel Canning, Lisa Perlmutter, Sarah Coney and Maggie Coles-Lyster.

Linda Madu, a member of the Garibaldi Art Club, examines the “Illumination” series of paintings by Sarah Ronald at the opening of the Ensemble art exhibit in the Maple Ridge Art Gallery recently. Emerging artists display works The Ensemble exhibit features local artists and will continue until Dec. 19. The Ensemble show at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery presents small groups of work by local artists, allowing them to portray a series or theme that is strengthened by displaying them as an “ensemble.” “The exhibit features emerging artists and artisans who are hoping to one day assemble sufficient work for a solo or duo show,” said curator Barbara Duncan. “The featured artists have a body of work... that lends strong visual impact, variety and overall coherence to the exhibition.”

Also at the ACT are new works by artist Steve Baylis on the Passagio on the third floor of the arts centre. Baylis describes this body of work as “an art exhibit about amusement parks. Through colour, pattern and humour, this group of paintings transmits the timeless nature of the amusement park with a narrative element.” Bayliss is trying to depict the sights and staff of the amusement park in a natural manner. The Ensemble show and sale runs to Dec. 19 at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery in The ACT at 11944 Haney Pl. For more, visit www.theactmapleridge.org/gallery.
