A traumatized Pitt Meadows woman attacked by a leashed police dog thinks she deserves victim services counselling – even if the RCMP doesn’t think so. Monica Steele was standing near the elevator of a Burnaby apartment on Nov. 16, when police officers – responding to a break-and-enter call reported by Steele’s employer – burst into the narrow hallway. One of the officers was holding on to a police dog, which Steele said was “raring to go” and was on a loose leash. “The handler wasn’t in control of the dog,” she said. “Although he was trying, it was the dog telling him where to go.” As the dog went past Steele, it suddenly went for her, without provocation. “He jumped up, lunged at me and bit into my thigh,” said Steele, a part-time housekeeper.

Steele fell against the wall and to the floor with the dog attached to her leg until police managed to drag the canine off her. The attack lasted mere seconds, but enough to leave the 45-year-old woman traumatized. “She was in shock,” recalled Steele’s employer, Alexander Waters, who witnessed the incident. “It was really awful. She was crying and shaking and saying, ‘Why?’ over and over again.” None of the officers stayed behind with her, said Steele, who was told later that the police’s first priority was the breakand-enter call. An ambulance was called and Steele was transported to hospital for bruises, scrapes and small puncture marks from the dog’s teeth. She also needed antibiotics and a tetanus shot. Steele was offered an apology by the canine handler’s supervisor, who visited her at her house. She was told the handler was new at his job. Steele was then asked to sign a complaint form that said the handler will receive “operational guidance” on dog-

A 42-year-old Maple Ridge woman has lost her licence for 90 days and her vehicle for 30 days, after being caught drinking and driving this weekend. A concerned citizen called police at about 1:45 a.m. on

The woman failed the reading, which resulted in an immediate roadside prohibition. Now that the holiday season is here and many people are attending parties, it is important they make sure to have a safe ride home, police said. A charity program called Operation Red Nose (ORN) offers

such a solution this holiday season, giving people safe rides home in exchange for a donation. ORN operated this past weekend, with 42 volunteers giving 37 rides Friday and Saturday, raising almost $1,000, said program organizer for the Ridge Meadows service Linda Palm. Peggy Lambert is thinking about retiring from retirement – running a health and wellness clinic for seniors and staying involved in the seniors centre as a board member keeps her busy almost every day of the week. And her volunteer efforts were recognized a few weeks ago when she was chosen as volunteer of the year by the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society. Lambert, a retired registered nurse, started the Health and Wellness Clinic for Seniors eight years ago after noticing cuts to services meant that seniors weren’t always getting adequate health care. “I was very angry with Gordon Campbell,” Lambert said. “There were so many seniors dropping through the cracks.” The clinic started in 2002, and since then Lambert has enlisted 12 retired registered nurses and a host of other medical professionals to help more than 600 seniors with their health issues. A retired massage-therapist gives 10-minute massages at the clinic, which Lambert said helps lower blood pressure. Two pharmacists come to help seniors with their medications – one is a diabetic educator. An optometrist helps at the clinic once a month. Lambert also has a small clinic every second Friday in Pitt Meadows. There are now 618 seniors on Lambert’s list and every week she

The clinic has been such a success, some local doctors have been recommending it to their patients, Lambert said.

Each client at the seniors’ health and wellness clinic gets a card where the nurses record medical information. Some doctors use the health records Lambert and the other nurses keep on these cards to monitor their patients’ health. Paddy Godbehere, manager

of the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society, said the health and wellness clinic has been “very successful” and the award given to Lambert was just a small way of recognizing her volunteer work. The clinic is more accessible to seniors than going to their doctor or a drop-in clinic, she added, and provides a more “nurturing” environment. “(The clinic is) a very safe and comfortable place for seniors to come,” Godbehere said. While Lambert enjoys working with seniors, during her 35year-career at Burnaby General, Lionsgate and Royal Columbian hospitals, she attended more than a thousand deliveries. She trained as a midwife in England and worked in obstetrics during her career in Canada, specializing in high-risk obstetrics. “I miss the babies,” she said. Lambert joked that she is going to have to retire from retirement soon, but she doesn’t know who would replace her at the clinic. “I’ll have to go till I drop,” she said. Lambert received the award at the volunteer luncheon on Nov. 7 at the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society – this was the first time she’s been recognized for her work with seniors’ health. The Health and Wellness Clinic runs every Tuesday at the Ridge Meadows Seniors Centre from 9 a.m. to noon. There’s also a clinic at the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre every second Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be no clinic on Tuesday, Dec. 21 nor on Dec. 28. The clinic re-opens on Jan. 4, 2011. The last Pitt Meadows clinic of the year is on Dec. 17 – there will be no clinic on Dec. 31. It will re-open on Jan. 7. Anyone 55 years old and older is eligible to attend the drop-in clinics. There’s a $1 fee.

Federal seat race heats up

While the Green Party of Canada has chosen Peter Tam to run in the next federal election, Maple Ridge councillor Craig Speirs said he is 80 per cent commited to the idea of running for the New Democratic Party. Speirs said he is expecting a federal election in April or May. The current government, which is dominated by the Conservatives and Liberals, “can’t hold up much longer,” he said. The NDP nomination meeting will be held in early March at which time a candidate to run in the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission riding will be chosen. Speirs has been a Maple Ridge councillor for 12 years, and he said he knows politicians throughout Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. He said that type of experience is “critical” in understanding how communities work. “I think people who serve in higher levels of government should have that grounding – that base of knowledge,” he said. This municipal experience is something he can offer that the current MP

Variety show spans 150 years Cowboys, Indians, and soldiers will share the stage in the seniors society’s upcoming production.

Patton, who wrote and produced the show and made the scenery, and the assistant director Hilda Walker. “A lot more goes on behind the scenes than people, see,” Patton said. The first act will feature a western theme with cowboys and Indians. The second act is split in two, the first part with Christmas numbers, the second with a tribute to the military forces. It’s been 65 years since the end of the Second World War, and “everybody seems to be celebrating,” Patton said. Half of the money from the ticket sales goes to the seniors centre, and half goes to upgrades for the upcoming shows, for example, the sound system, and stage equipment. Times to Remember will open on Thursday at 7 p.m. Other showtimes are Saturday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance from the seniors centre, or available at the door for only a dollar more.

There’s a flurry of last-minute activity at the seniors centre on 224th Street as the annual Christmas show Times to Remember prepares to open on Thursday evening. This is the ninth year the seniors society is putting on their Christmas variety show. The last rehearsal is taking place today (Tuesday) and the show will come together on Thursday night for the first performance. At the final rehearsals, stage director Reg Patton sometimes gets overwhelmed at the details that need to be worked out but “somehow it seems to come together.” The lion’s share of the work is done by

Education

Innovation launches The board of education gave approval to a new environmental program.

The board room at the district education office was standing-room-only at Wednesday night’s board of education meeting. This time, however, the crowd wasn’t there to protest a school closure – which was the topic at the last full-house school board meeting. This time, it was packed because discussion about opening a new program within the Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows school district was on the agenda. The board of education approved a new program called the Place-based imaginative and ecological school proposal – known as the environmental school. It is set to launch September 2011, provided there is enough enrolment. “It ties into the future of education… it’s the right time for this type of thing,” trustee Susan Carr said after a presentation on the program by Laurie Meston, director of elementary education. The program will probably have between 40 and 60 students. To be viable, it needs about 40 registered students, she told trustees. It will draw on resources outside of the traditional classroom and students will largely learn in different places, such as nature parks and community facilities – hence, the term place-based learning. In education, the talk is about the three Rs – reading, writing, and arithmetic – and the seven Cs – collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, crosscultural understanding, communication and computing, career and learning self-reliance, and caring for personal and planet health. This new model of school will allow for learning in a new setting. “This is an opportunity for children to learn those things in the environment,” Meston said. Trustee Mike Huber pointed out that the school district usually talks about

“bums in seat” – how many students are enrolled in each school – but “now we can have three bums on a log.” The environmental school will be open to all students in the district, explained Meston. And it will be staffed according to the formula used for all classroom staffing. But, the classes will most likely be multi-grade groups. A location for the program has not been determined yet, but Meston said it could be a school within another school, or a school next to another school, for example, in a portable. Or, it could be located in a community facility.

Residential Premises Owners or occupier of residential single and multi family property are required to remove snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, ramps and foot paths bordering the property. 1) Snowplows have no place to push snow except to the curb or shoulder of the road and that includes any driveways in their path. The City realizes this causes some hardship and we ask for your understanding, as our main goal is to make the roads as safe as possible.

Environmental school vice-principal Clayton Maitland is spearheading the project in SD42. He said after Wednesday’s approval by the board, he can now start organizing other aspects of the program, as well as putting together a council – consisting of parents, community members and other stakeholders – and creating program guidelines and a memorandum of understanding. Momentum has been building, Maitland said, and he thinks there will be even more interest now in the environmental school. “We just have to be careful not to grow too big, too soon,” he said.

Recall a waste of money

Dear Editor,

No doubt some will accuse me of being condescending, or worse. Nevertheless, it seems that many people are just too busy to think for themselves and separate fact from fiction, rather than hook-line-and-sinker accepting what the media and self-serving people tell them. Here are some things to think of and honestly answer for yourselves: First of all, ask if your situation is really worse than before July 1st and even if you can honestly say yes to that, is it because of the HST, or maybe because of the slower-than-hoped-for economic recovery? Or is it perhaps because utilities, property taxes, gas and transit costs have risen more than inflation? Just look at the endless number of cars on the road and obviously, the economy is starting to take off.

Don’t believe everything is recyclable Dear Editor,

After taking a flat-screen TV out of its box, I ended up with four pieces of white plastic with a “recycle” sign on them, each about a foot in length, height and width. The four pieces together weigh about two pounds. Not Styrofoam. Plastic. With the triangular triple-arrow sign that means “recyclable”. I put them outside in the recycle box on curbside pickup day. I got a sticker on my blue box telling me that they can’t take it. Well, they probably didn’t take the time to look at it and see the “recycle” sign, though they sure found the time to put a sticker and tick one of its boxes. Today, I drove from Pitt Meadows all the way to Albion to deliver it to the recycling centre. The employee there refused to take it either, even after being shown the sign, because there is no number in it. Next door, I was told there is a minimum charge of $10 for dropping my garbage there, even if it is recyclable and not taken at the recycling centre. I took the pieces of plastic back with me, lost half an hour driving for nothing, and I’ll throw them in the garbage bag over the coming weeks. I used to wonder why I would sometimes see a fridge or a TV in the ditch on Airport Way. I don’t anymore. My wife and I moved close to work so we could sell our second car and commute by bike. We do our best to minimize our environmental footprint. We sort and recycle. We were even surprised that there is no specific glass recycling bin when we arrived here. How can a community hope to have people consume less and recycle more with the way recycling works in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows? Perhaps I should use my energy to have bigger stuff, more stuff, and throw away more garbage. It seems to be the trend, encouraged even by our “recycling” policies.

Now, when it comes to the planned recall of Marc Dalton, when you think about why he should be recalled, is that because he does not work for his constituents? Or perhaps he has done something unforgivable and/or criminal? Have you ever met the man and actually talked with him? Do you even know him? This is also a direct question to Corisa Bell. Have you met and talked to Marc Dalton and do you think he is bad for Maple Ridge-Mission? Furthermore, are you purely impartial? While I may be wrong, I can’t shake the feeling that you may have an ulterior motive. One more thing to consider: How many years will it take to recover the cost of these recalls, supposing that you actually have less money now because of the HST? We just heard that each recall will cost at least $1 million, even though we are already committed to about $30 million for the upcoming referendum next September. As for me, I don’t want the recalls and most certainly don’t want to pay for them, so I suggest that those who insist on going ahead with these recalls raise their own funds for it, instead of taking it out of our tax money.

Money should go to new pool Dear Editor,

To put Councillor Deb Walters’ mind to rest, the land under the [Harris Road Park] pool is probably sand. The trees surrounding the pool area are the recipients of the water leakage and perhaps maybe even the cause. The expansion of the existing water park can be done without removing the swimming pool from the site, it could be expanded in at least two if not three directions – other than north. I am surprised to find that council authorized parks and leisure services to spend as much as $80,000 to determine if the pool is worth keeping. The plan by staff of park and leisure has for at least 20 years been to close the pool, while awaiting the building of an indoor pool for Pitt Meadows. That mind-set should not be part of this study. The study should not be done by parks and leisure, but by outside “experts,” if we want an answer other than “close the pool.” Only the determination of members of council has kept the pool open, or it would have been closed 15 years ago. We should keep a pool where children swim and play outside in the summer months. They play enough indoors. That $80,000 would go a long way towards a new small pool, or the proper repair of the pool with new lining or new concrete that doesn’t leak and new piping-plumbing. No doubt the piping is very old, possibily corroded. Can supple plastic pipes be fed inside the existing plumbing?

Maple Ridge–Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper issued a “reminder” that there are still imposters on the streets collecting food, toys, and cash donations claiming to be from the local charitable society.

In the last few years there have been several incidences of misrepresentation, said Tom Cameron, co-chair of the Christmas hamper. “Some imposters identify themselves with organization names that are very similar to our society’s to confuse and take advantage of the donors,” he said. “One thing that you need to know is that the Maple Ridge–Pitt Meadows

It was a week filled with strategizing, tough competition and high altitudes for a pair of local girls from the Maple Ridge’s Rock Wall Climbing Gym. When the TIMES spoke to Christy Spurrell and Jaylene Pratt during their first day of competition they were excited to be at the event and competing against other young climbers from all over the world. “Climbing is so much fun,” said Spurrell, 17, “It’s kind of like a puzzle on the wall, it’s always changing.” Pratt, 19, has only been climbing for three-and-ahalf years and said that while the walls in Ibarra were “really cool,” the high altitude (2,225 metres) was hard to get used to. “It makes you out of breath so quickly,” said Pratt, “and you have to drink lots of water.” Coach and father of

Christy, Terry Spurrell, said the altitude had a major impact on the athletes and this was evident during the different events. Both Maple Ridge climbers made some new friends and Spurrell said the host country, with its warm and friendly hospitality, no doubt made this event an amazing experience for all the athletes and families.

Almost 300 people attended the concert held at the ACT on Saturday, and although the total amount raised has not yet been tallied, organizers know the event was a success. Joanne Leginus, the director of administration and services for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services, said everyone seemed to really enjoy the concert and there was also a lot of activity around the silent auction. “I was able to go up on stage and introduce Darlene Morrey,” said Leginus, “who has been volunteering with Meals on Wheels for almost 19 years.” Due to this introduction, someone approached Morrey later in the show and said she would also like to volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Everyone who participated in the show and who helped organize it was a volunteer, and Leginus said that all those people deserve a huge thank you along with all their sponsors. “This is a real key event for Meals on Wheels,” said Leginus. “It is our key fundraiser to support and maintain our program at its current level.” One of the long-time organizers of the concert, Rob Hess, also staged a teddy bear toss for the children in the audience at the end of the show. He collected teddy bears, explained Leginus, and then he got some of the

You might expect to hear bluegrass music echoing through the Appalachian Mountains, but as dusk settled upon Pitt Meadows on a recent Tuesday night, pickers, strummers, and fiddlers gathered to play it indoors.

Maple Ridge resident Denis Leclerc has brought his love for bluegrass to the Bergthorson Academy of Musical Arts, at 12229 Harris Rd. The free, bi-weekly drop-in jam is open to amateur musicians of all levels and bluegrass fans. Musicians can take part in a jam that includes old time fiddle, banjo and mandolin music, while learning about the instruments, bluegrass/old-time country styles, tunes, and etiquette. Future participants should bring their own instruments to play along, learn new techniques and licks, and share their skills. “Bluegrass” is a term coined by Bill Monroe, explained Leclerc. “He [Monroe] is considered the father of bluegrass music,” Leclerc elaborated. Monroe, who died in 1996, originated the famous “high lonesome” bluegrass sound as early as 1945, Leclerc said. It is a combination of all kinds of folk and fiddle styles that come out of Europe, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, France, and even Spain and Italy, blended with blues and swing, Leclerc said. “When they all came to North America as immigrants, and during the fur trade and the various gold rushes, they contacted each other and the music melded until Bill [Monroe] found a way to put the black American aspect, blues and jazz,

into this folk music, and it became what is now bluegrass music.” added Leclerc, , a current member of the Alouette River Band. So what are the common themes of bluegrass songs? “Misery and hardship,” Leclerc answered. “Even the most happy melodies and the most upbeat tempos are usually about hardship, the realities of sharecropping, or love gone wrong — that sort of thing.” Leclerc said bluegrass is a discipline all its own. “If you can play a guitar or any kind of instrument, you can certainly play bluegrass,” he said. “But as you get into it more and more you realize there are some fairly involved musical emphases that give it its own distinction.” Canadians can find elements of their own heritage in bluegrass music, according to Leclerc. “Whether it’s French-Canadian fiddling or whatever, you can find those elements in bluegrass music, but it also has that modern flavour that appeals to modern audiences,” Leclerc said. “That’s what I like about it.” For more information or to reserve a spot, call Rob or leave a message at 604-
