The event was a meeting of the Society for Creative Anachronism, a non-profit group focused on preserving and re-enacting pre-17th century life. SCA events are usually closed to the public, but the Antioch Invitational, an event meant to capture the interest of potential members, was open to all – the first of its kind in B.C. Dalton expected on February recall list Local organizers have enlisted 160 volunteers to help collect signatures for the recall initiative. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Plans are afoot to launch a recall campaign against Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton in February 2011. Recall organizers for the Maple RidgeMission riding are compiling lists of people who will canvas for signatures in an attempt to have Dalton ousted and have set Feb. 28 as the date to put in an application for recall. “We’re very confident we’ll be successful with the recall campaign,” said Corisa Bell, campaign organizer for the riding. Currently they have about 160 canvassers lined up to start collecting names when the application is put in. After the
recall campaign begins, the organizers have 60 days to collect signatures. They will need to collect signatures from 40 per cent of registered voters from the riding, and plan to do so between Feb. 28 and April 30, 2011. Dalton is part of phase four of the recall campaign. The first phase began yesterday in an initiative to recall Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Ida Chong. The goal of the recall campaign is to pressure the government to push up the HST referendum, currently set for Sept. 24, 2011, but Bell said the campaign is about much more than just opposition to the new tax. “It’s so much bigger than that,” she said. “HST was just the beginning.” Other issues people have raised concerns about are the BC Rail scandal and the suspension of the 15 per cent tax break, which Premier Gordon Campbell promised just a couple weeks ago. “People are just upset with the Liberal
party,” Bell said. Dalton, however, said the recall campaign is “NDP-driven” with people from the New Democrats working in the background. “A lot of the impetus is coming from the NDP,” he said. This is destabilizing for government and democracy, he added. “Recall was meant to recall someone who’s totally incompetent ... (who’s) transMarc Dalton gressing law,” he said. Dalton said he wants Maple Ridge-Mission MLA to keep working for his constituents until the fixed election date of May 2013. “That’s the time I can be judged on my record,” he said. Dalton pointed out that the economy of the province is in good shape and it’s an
“exciting time” for the province. A strong economy means more people in B.C. have jobs and are financially better off. “It’s really about the little guy, the senior citThis izen, the person on the story first street,” he said. Maple Ridge-Pitt appeared Meadows NDP MLA as Michael Sather disagreed with Dalton, saying the breaking recall campaign is being news at driven by the same www. people who organized the anti-HST petition and mrtimes. not the NDP. com If the recall campaign goes ahead, he would only be involved at a “low-level.” Sather doesn’t plan to attend any rallies to support recall, adding that he respects Dalton and doesn’t want to embarrass him. “I’m not a dirty fighter,” Sather said.

What lies ahead for Albion?
Community groups are getting a second What’s OnLine chance to give input on the Albion Flats.
Some late night shopping, of sorts, at Superstore landed a wanted Maple Ridge man behind bars last week. A 40-year-old local man was arrested for shoplifting at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday. It turned out he was wanted on three outstanding warrants, and was in breach of probation for being at Superstore, a history that landed him back behind bars. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

Development in the Albion Flats has polarized opinion in Maple Ridge with groups
Maple Ridge council decided to hold a second consultation meeting on Dec. 8. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said he and council want to “get this right.” “This is incredibly important,” Daykin said. “We want to get everyone’s input.” The Albion Flats would need approval from the Agricultural Land Commission to be developed as well as 51 per cent weighted approval by Metro Vancouver.
The picture of the whole Spencer farm appeared to be taken about the time it was bought by the municipality in 1959. A group of Robertson and Ritchie children (below) swimming in a big puddle somewhere on the Albion flats.
Skills recognized Two awards were given to the District of Maple Ridge for how it kept the community aware of downtown construction. The District’s ability to keep a two-way stream of communication open between the municipality and businesses during recent large-scale renovations has netted them two international awards. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

am Robertson was the first person to own the land south and east of Kanaka Creek from its mouth to what is now 240th Street. Robertson started visiting the land in the 1860s, even before he homesteaded there, and is known to have planted fruit trees in any natural clearing he found. By the time he quit as a carpenter, boat-builder, and barrel-maker for the Hudson Bay Company’s Fort in Fort Langley and took up his homestead, he had bearing fruit trees, which were the first producing orchards in B.C. Other than orchard and hay production, there is no other historic record of development on the Albion Flats until the establishment of the Spencer farm. David Spencer, founder of a department store in Vancouver, bought land in Albion in 1919.

It was later used for raising rabbits and then hogs. By 1959, when the District of Maple Ridge purchased the property, it was no longer being farmed. Anxious to have more land in the centre of Haney for development, the municipality offered the larger Spencer farm to the Maple Ridge Agricultural Association in exchange for the “Aggie Grounds,” which were located between 224th and 226th Streets – from just behind the business frontage on Lougheed Highway, north to McIntosh Avenue. The agricultural association took over ownership of the site, including the largest single-barn building available for fairs in the valley, and used it for the agricultural fair. The only original farm buildings remaining today are the milk house and the small home built for Oliver Evans.

Gas leak shuts highway It was a cold night for some area homeowners who didn’t get gas back. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Students at Edith McDermott Elementary School and residents north of Lougheed to the CP Rail tracks between 200th and Harris Road in Pitt Meadows were told to stay indoors after a natural gas line ruptured on Monday afternoon. Lougheed Highway was closed in both directions for about two hours from about 1:15 p.m. onward. Pitt Meadows Fire and Rescue, the RCMP, and Terasen Gas were on site as the natural gas company repaired the two-inch line that was ruptured near Park Road on Lougheed.
There were no reports of injuries, but passersby commented on the strong smell of gas. The City of Pitt Meadows told people in the affected area to “shelter in place” while the repair work was being done, said Pitt Meadows communications officer Lorna Jones. The road was re-opened just after 3 p.m. The gas pipeline was damaged after an excavator was digging as part of the highway expansion construction, said Terasen spokesperson Kirsten Walker. Eighty-five customers had their gas cut off for safety reasons, Walker said, and Terasen Gas will visit each home to restore the meter and relight appliances. Walker said if customers aren’t home when the company comes to restore it, they should call 1-877-711-8877.
Are you prepared for the snow? Severe winter weather can wreak havoc for commuters and pedestrians alike. Please prepare yourself and your family in advance for the unexpected this winter. ❄ Have an up to date home and auto preparedness kit (including food, flashlights, warm blankets, etc) in case you are stranded or lose power. ❄ Drive according to the weather and road conditions, and allow extra time to arrive at your destination. ❄ Yield to snow plows and sanders which at times must plow and sand the centre line of the road. ❄ As a pedestrian, always wear appropriate footwear and reflective clothing. ❄ Assist municipal crews during snow removal by moving all vehicles off public roadways.
When It Snows Main Routes
Crews focus on First Priority Routes - major streets, transit routes, routes near schools and collector streets first. Crews will work continuously to ensure that these streets are kept open. When there is continual or repeated snowfall, it may be necessary for the snow removal equipment to remain on the major routes for extended periods of time to ensure they are kept clear. Public spaces such as sidewalks adjacent to civic buildings, parks, pedestrian accesses and mailboxes may not be cleared for some time, as crews will be focusing on roadways first.
Minor and Residential Routes Minor collector and residential streets are dealt with only after the first priority streets are taken care of.The extent of snow clearing on residential streets is also dependent on access - parked cars can hamper this activity to the point of the street not being cleared. Clearing and maintaining all of our roadways during a snowstorm takes time and planning and can be difficult. We appreciate your understanding, patience, and cooperation during this season.
After It Snows
Please remember to clean the snow from all the sidewalks adjacent to your property.Your neighbours and people who deliver city services to your property will appreciate the ease at which they can negotiate the sidewalks. We have a bylaw requiring owners or occupiers of a property to remove snow and ice from sidewalks or footpaths bordering his/her property by 10am following a snowfall. If the property owner fails to do so, the Bylaw Enforcement Officer has the authority to issue a fine or to remove the snow at the property owner’s expense. Once the snow melts, it needs to make its way to the catch basins, so please keep gutters and drains adjacent to your property clear of leaves and snow.
Snow Angels
Looking out for our neighbours Snow Angels is a campaign that encourages residents in both Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge to be good neighbours and help other neighbours who have mobility or other health issues with snow removal. Watch for people in your neighbourhood that could use help and ask if you can lend them a hand by keeping their sidewalks clear or offering to run errands for them if they have difficulty getting out in the snow. Being a Snow Angel is not only being a good neighbour, but could prevent an injury or even save a life!

Imagine attending school and hanging out with friends, but not being able to verbally communicate. This was the challenge faced by about 150 Garibaldi students Friday, as they completed a 24hour vow of silence to raise money for the Free the Children campaign. This campaign brings children together from all over North America and encourages them to take action to improve the lives of children overseas. Students at Garibaldi Secondary have been taking part in this event for three years now, raising money to build and equip a school in war-torn Sierra Leone. They have almost reached their goal to raise $10,000. “All of the money is going to give kids in Sierra Leone a voice,” said Grade 12’s Samantha Stanley, one of the event organizers. So how hard was it for a bunch of teenagers to keep

Stanley nodded her head in agreement: “It’s very difficult when you can’t have a conversation.” When the students, and some teachers, first took their vow last Thursday afternoon they all left their lunch meeting with neon blue tape over their mouths and signs on their clothes. The markings indicated to everyone that they were not allowed to talk. As the hours went on, they hung on to the signs
but the tape became too uncomfortable. “I slipped up once in sewing class,” said Grade 9’s Keisha Gill. “As soon as I spoke I got a sinking feeling in my stomach and I knew I messed up.” Free the Children, which was started in 1995, has already built more than 650 schools around the world and the organization is expanding all the time. Maple Ridge council
Untidy lot given reprieve Complaint sparks close look at use of a North Maple Ridge property. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
A property on 136 Avenue has paraphernalia scattered around and has prompted a complaint to the District of Maple Ridge’s bylaw office. Plastic barrels for gathering rain, machinery, wood, pails, debris, old ladders, and a few old vehicles were on the property at 22296 136 Ave. when bylaw officers visited about a month ago. “The property is clearly in horrific shape and needs to be cleaned up,” Councillor Mike Morden said at Monday’s council workshop. Since then some of the debris has been removed, but District staff recommended council order a cleanup. The owner of the 15-by-99-metre property was at council workshop with her husband and son, and council decided to give them until Jan. 10 to come up with a cleanup plan and report back to council. While several councillors acknowledged the property was a mess, they also spoke about the need to support people who want to farm on small narrow strips of land, and how farmers tend to gather material to use in farming. The family argued at council workshop that the principal use of the property is
agriculture. The owner’s son, Wilson To, said the family plans to use a lot of the material for farming, for example, the wood to build raised beds, and rain barrels for collecting water. Councillor Cheryl Ashlie asked whether there are farm receipts coming from the property, to which District staff replied that B.C. Assessment states the property is vacant land. “I think that lot absolutely needs to be cleaned up,” she said. However, later she said this issue should be looked at by the agricultural committee, and a review “The property should be done of is clearly in how many properties – small, narrow horrific shape properties with no and needs to residence on them be cleaned up.” – are in similar shape but are being used Michael Morden for agriculture. This might be the “tip of the iceberg,”’ she said, and she wanted to know how extensive this kind of farming is. Farming is not cheap, said Councillor Judy Dueck, but she added the neighbours have a right to live next to a tidy property. “We all want to buy vegetables that are grown locally,” said Mayor Ernie Daykin. But he added, if the stuff on the property sits too long, it will become unusable. In addition, he said, the District has an obligation act on the complaint about the untidy and unsightly condition of the property. The recommendation from staff was to take down a shed that was falling apart and clean up the property.

Albion
Prepare for round two Editor,
I was delighted to read of a second opportunity for shopping and growth in Albion. The first charette was deeply flawed from the start, and was hijacked by the special-interest group in the usual tenacious way of killing any growth business idea. When I read the list of attendance at the last meeting, I noticed a lack of business interests. Even the land owners SmartCentres mall development did not attend. All I see is advisory groups. The flaw: never ask 100 people what that think. You will get a 100 ideas. You never invite 29 groups, societies advisory committees, and councils as each has their own agenda. This process will never see a single consolidated idea or plan. Not one group on the list has any experience or knowledge in building or planning any major project little alone a shopping centre. This is a business meeting not a social gathering of societies and committees. If council needs to ask what people think, do a survey using a reputable firm. I write this letter to help draw attention
to the greater need and benefit to Maple Ridge residents. We need to keep more shopping dollars in town, we need business tax dollars, and we need local jobs. Administrator Jim Rule asked a very good question: if this charette fails, what do we do? First we need to build a business partnership with the property owners, then put out a call for proposals, inviting architects and engineering firms with the experience and knowledge in the field. When that process is complete we need to proceed with a call to tender for professional project managers, designers, and general contractors. Build a facility that we can be proud to have built for the future. Let’s not build any more three-lane bridges. To pray or not to pray, that is the question. Let us reflect. Other councils have seen the light and [is considering] cancelling all prayer. Council meetings are business meetings not Bible study. Council has more pressing topics.

New B.C. law hurts servers Editor,
The new limits on blood-alcohol content for B.C. drivers mark a profound societal change in British Columbia. As your editorial on Nov. 16 so clearly states, “As for bar and restaurant owners losing money –tough.” Yes, the cost has been far too high, for far too long in regards to drinking and driving. While restaurant and bar owners lose money, the servers and other staff at these establishments are also losing money. As a professional server, I know the changes in income that myself and many tens of thousands of others across B.C. are now facing. This is obviously a cost of society going through a profound change. I’m also sure that, in the spirit of “the human lives that could be saved” with these new laws, our dentists will reduce their fees by 50 per cent. The cost of groceries will be reduced by 50 per cent. The price of cars, gasoline, bus fares, movies, computers, home repairs, and everything else we purchase and consume in our society will be reduced by 50 per cent. In fact, I’m sure we’ll all be happy to volunteer a 50 per cent pay cut. Remember, this is all for the sake of those who can’t control their own alcohol intake. To say “tough” to those of us affected by these societal changes is to cheapen the contributions that we make and have made as Canadian citizens. I do not advocate a return to an increase in drinking and driving. I must, however, respond to the ignorance highlighted in this said editorial. If law-abiding businesses have the rules of business changed by government edict for the good of the community, then let us all follow the lead of the service and hospitality industry in B.C. We’re the ones taking it in the wallet with these new changes, therefore let’s all share the cost. After all, if it costs all the other sectors of our society “... a few bucks. It’s nothing compared to the human lives that could be saved.”

Visit pros of being green Editor,
It was with great pleasure that I read that Vancouver was recently ranked the second greenest city in the world. Now that is international attention we can really celebrate. This really lends credibility to those who’ve been claiming in recent years that Vancouver should position itself as the green technology capital of the world: Wall Street the financial capital, Tokyo the hi-tech capital, and Vancouver the green technology capital. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Can you imagine it? Instead of skyscrapers filled with oil executives and gold miners, they would be filled with people performing cutting edge research on how to harness energy from water in the atmosphere and others showing how we can easily run Vancouver’s new free wireless network on green energy generated by glacier runoff and rain water. We all know the green potential of B.C.’s geography, which makes Vancouver a natural fit for the international headquarters of green technology research and development. Undoubtedly, this would be a huge benefit to people across B.C. and Canada for years and years to come. And I can’t think of an international reputation I’d be more proud of.

vated assault. The 25-year-old was arrested last Wednesday and kept in custody until her court appearance yesterday. Just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Ridge Meadows RCMP and the B.C. Ambulance Service arrived at an apartment building at 11872 Laity St., where they found a 44-year-old man had been stabbed. He underwent emergency surgery after being airlifted to hospital. He was still in hospital Monday, but police said he should survive. The RCMP investigation is continuing.

Police blotter
Knife-wielding bandit sought by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com
A young masked man is being hunted by Ridge Meadows RCMP following an armed robbery at a Maple Ridge video store this weekend. Robitronics Video, located at 228th Street and Dewdney Trunk Rd., was the target of a knife-wielding teenaged bandit at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday. He entered the store, produced the weapon, and demanded cash, police said. He was given an undisclosed amount of money, then fled, running north towards Greenwell Street. The bandit is described as a Caucasian man, 18 to 20 years old, about 6 ft. tall, with a thin build. He was wearing a black balaclava, blue jacket, and a dark green shirt. No one was injured in the robbery, but anyone with information is asked to call the Ridge Medows RCMP at 604-463-6251.
Dog and owner reunited
Mounties are being credited with reuniting a woman and her dog in downtown Maple Ridge late last week. Police were called to Valley Fair Mall at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, after a woman had tied her dog up outside the Save-On Foods store, while she quickly went inside to shop. When she returned, the dog was gone. A store employee told her – and police – that a woman walked off with the dog. She was seen travelling west towards 227th Street.
LEGION EVENTS Always the lowest prices in town!
Officers broadcast the description over the police radio, and a short time later another officer – leaving the detachment on Edge Street, spotted the dog and woman. The dog was returned to a very grateful owner. Police say the suspect is mentally challenged, and no criminal charges are expected.

Pitt Meadows hosts Christmas in the City event The Spirit Square Christmas tree will be lit in Pitt Meadows at a free family event beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday Dec. 3. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
A
large tree, carollers, free hot chocolate, candy canes and Santa arriving in a miniature horse and buggy cart are just a few of the Christmas attractions at the second annual Christmas in the City event in Pitt Meadows from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3. “This is a free family event,” said Michael Hayes, president of the Pitt Meadows Foundation and co-chair of the Christmas in the City campaign. “It’s a great way to get out and celebrate the holiday season in Pitt Meadows.” About 500 to 600 people attended the event last year and Hayes is expecting even more to show up this year. The foundation will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Friends In Need Food Bank and there will be plenty of things to do for people of all ages. “We’ll also have hot apple cider and other businesses selling crafts,” said Hayes, “and the Economic Development Corporation is putting on a tree decorating contest.” The event will be held at Spirit Square, which Hayes said is a great location because it’s within walking distance from many developments and it’s in the centre of the city. “I know Maple Ridge has had one for many years,” said Hayes, “but we thought it was about time Pitt Meadows did something like this.” The Foundation is still looking for volunteers and corporate sponsorship for the evening. It will be a weekend of festivities in the community with this event on Friday, Maple Ridge’s Santa Parade on Saturday and the Osprey Village Christmas tree lighting on Sunday. “It’s spread out,” said Hayes, “so there’s no reason people won’t be able to get to one of them.”
A child accepted a candy cane from Mrs. Claus while chatting with Santa at last year’s Christmas in the City.

Maple Ridge Christmas event welcomes Santa An all-free event features free photos with Santa, a live nativity scene, and an annual Santa Claus Parade.
C
hristmas in the Park at Memorial Peace Park and the Santa Claus Parade will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4. The festival will run from 4 to 8 p.m. and will provide a healthy, festive, fun environment for both children and adults to celebrate the Christmas season. The parade route is the same as last year, starting at Dewdney Trunk Road and 221st Street at 6 p.m., winding its way east to 224th Street and down to Memorial Peace Park. The parade will circle the park and then end on Selkirk Avenue. Last year’s parade had 52 floats, and organizers expect as many or more this year. The Maple Ridge Christmas celebration is all free, but donations are welcomed.
TIMES’ files
The parade includes marching bands along with floats.
“This year we’ve been hit with the recession hard,” said publicity chair Dianne Enns. The non-profit society is dependent on grants and donations, but donations are down about 20 per cent from last year. Sponsorship opportunities are available to help individually or corporately. Please contact the society’s fundraising chair Joan Winters at sponsorshipcoordinator@ mapleridgechristmas.ca to help. Popcorn and hot chocolate will be provided free of charge – bring your own mug. The Kiwanis Club will serve free hot dogs. Other activities include free photos with Santa, children’s arts and crafts, as well as festive entertainment provided by local bands, choirs, and entertainers. This year there will be a live nativity scene put on by Burnett Fellowship. Kids should bring their letters to Santa as Santa’s elves (courtesy of Canada Post) will be collecting the letters along the parade route. There will also be a mailbox in the park for letters to Santa. The deadline for registering a float is Nov. 30. Requests can be sent to mapleridgechristmas@gmail.com for a parade entry form. The Christmas Festival Society committee will hold its last meeting tonight (Tuesday) at 6:30 p.m. at the chamber of commerce boardroom. New members are welcome. Volunteers are still needed and a volunteer orientation meeting will be held at the Maple Ridge Library in the Fraser Room on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. “We would love to have new volunteers,” Enns said. “The more the merrier.” For more information send your questions or request to mapleridgechristmas@ gmail.com.
Santa and Mrs. Claus talked to the crowds gathered along the parade route at last year’s Santa Claus Parade.

Santa paid a visit to last year’s Osprey Christmas gathering, and is expected to return again this year. Organizers hope to attract even more than the 250 who attended last year’s event.

T
he business owners and residents of Osprey Village invite everyone to come to view the Christmas tree lighting, hear some carols and even sit on Santa’s knee. Hody Lye, owner of Somatic Balance Massage Therapy and a member of the Osprey Village Business Association, said
they do this event every year to give back to the community and their neighbours. “We want to bring people to the village and foster a sense of community,” she said. Last year’s event attracted about 250 people. The evening is free but donations for the food bank are welcomed. There will be crafts, warm beverages, snacks, and the chance to sing along with carols and Christmas songs. The Christmas tree lighting takes place Sunday Dec. 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Village, located at the south end of Barnston View Road in Pitt Meadows.

Poinsetta sales help homeless animals by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
S
But this way everyone gets beautiful plants and gives back to the community. The plants are available for purchase in red, white or pink; they will grow to about 13 inches tall and will be sold in a 6.75-inch pot. Vosper explained that this fundraiser will help the branch pay for medical costs for the animals, as many have been surrendered lately that require medical attention. “We need to put the animals right and get them ready for adoption,” said Vosper. Gale agreed that the medical fund is critical “because it tries to make the best quality of life for
the animal” she said. The BCSPCA is receiving a large chunk of the purchase price from each of the plants sold, and Vosper explained it is going straight to the Maple Ridge shelter and animals. People can order the plants until Friday, Nov. 26, by going online at http://spcamapleridge.plants4nonprofit.com/, or from the Maple Ridge shelter at 10235 Jackson Rd. All orders will be available for pickup on Saturday, Dec. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. “What better place to buy your plants than from your local SPCA?” Gale said.

ome items just seem to remind everyone that Christmas is almost here and the poinsettia plant is one of them. In conjunction with Beneath Your Feet Landscaping and DeVry Greenhouses, the Maple Ridge BCSPCA is holding its holiday fundraiser that aims to help their animals and provide the community with beautiful poinsettias.
“We don’t receive any government funding,” said Mark Vosper, the Maple Ridge’s branch manager. “So we are depending on the community.” Luckily Sherilyn Gale and Rob Turner from Beneath Your Feet are organizing the fundraiser to help raise money and awareness. “We’re always trying to do something for our community, and we try to do what we can for the BCSPCA,” Gale said. “I knew I’d really like to help out and do something for Christmas, and it’s a really tough time of year for everyone.”

Ridley Bent joins other music greats at ACT Barney Bentall and The Grand Cariboo Opry are in Ridge Thursday. On the heels of Ridley Bent’s CD release this summer, he’s spent the past few months visiting much of Canada. And that tour is now bringing him to Maple Ridge later this week. The 31-year-old awardwinning Canadian singer and songwriter – who brought fans country hits like I Can’t Turn My Back on the Bottle and Buckles and Boots – is joining a star-studded lineup of artists performing some of Canada’s finest roots and country music at The ACT Theatre on Thursday, Nov. 25. Bent is only one of a series of feature artists preparing to fill the ACT auditorium with their music. The night also features Juno award-winning Canadian artist Barney Bentall, and The Grand Cariboo Opry. Organizers say this team will be putting on a one-ofa-kind show that harkens back to a simpler time: “It is a dynamic evening, where everyone plays and everyone sings… sometimes all at once.” While all of them are recognized “unforgettable storytellers,” who offer great tales through song, Bent is among the youngest of the faction taking the stage Thursday. Like his past records, the new album released this summer called Rabbit On My Wheel reads like a collection of short stories, showcasing the Western Canada based artist’s keen fascination for characters whose life on the straight and narrow rarely lasts past the nearest exit to a short, crooked road. Although his tales are still as tall as they come, and the characters as large as life or larger, the cast of hard-drinking, fast-driving characters Bent unleashes on Rabbit On My Wheel, tend to be a shade less hell-bent on self-destruction than they are with keeping their lives between the lines and out of the ditch. Bent is never afraid to pepper his records with a few thoughts on love and loneliness – and his evolving cast of moonshinerunning, racecar-driving malcontents tend to know their way around the ladies as well as they do the back roads of the west. While that may be so, musically Rabbit On My Wheel definitely kicks it up a notch or six from his last record. Of course, these are love stories told the way only Bent can; tracks
that run the gamut from still has its share of shady hard and bitter to hardly characters, jackknifing better, including a beautitractor-trailers and whisfully rendered, deliberately key-fuelled bar fights. downAnd for tempo those who “It is a dynamic take on identify the classtrongly evening, where sic Dickey with his everyone plays and Lee song less reaeveryone sings… made famsonable ous by sometimes all at once.” characters George – the ones Concert organizers Jones in who tend 1962, She to prefer Thinks I Still Care. to stir things up with a While much of Bent’s pistol in one hand and a new material is drawn bottle in the other – there’s from real life experiences The Blood Trilogy. It’s a he’s gathered up on the companion EP, recorded road, Rabbit On My Wheel during the same sessions.
Bent describes it as a highly satisfying three-song western epic of violence and vengeance informed by his ongoing fascination with the bleak worlds of writers like John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy. Simply put, whether it’s love going strong but wrong in Livin’ With Her Ex, the straight up hooks of the album’s title track, or the three-way struggle between Junior Johnson, the whiskey and the wife, on lead single, I Can’t Turn My Back On the Bottle, Rabbit On My Wheel has everything listeners have come to expect
from Bent and more. It’s a smoking 12-song set chock full of fast cars, fine looking ladies and fist fights that finds Bent burning through a landscape of big country skies, with one hand on the steering wheel and one eye on the bottle every mile of the way. He’s expected to bring a lot of songs from his new album to The ACT this week. Thursday’s show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $42, and available from The ACT website at www. theactmapleridge.org, or for information about the show, call 604-476-2787.
Ridley Bent is one of several wellknown Canadian singer-songwriters who will be performing at The ACT on Thursday evening.

Local climbers compete in Ecuador by Amy Judd

Christy Spurrell and Jaylene Pratt are in Ibarra this week competing at the first ever Pan-American youth climbing championship. Both Maple Ridge natives will be competing in a sixday competition starting today in three disciplines; bouldering, difficulty and speed. Until Monday, they were training in Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, with the national team. The competition site in Ibarra presents a challenge for even these experienced climbers, as the walls are outside and weather will be a factor if it rains. The city is also situated at an altitude of 2,225m and climbers have to get used to this elevation. Both Spurrell, 17, and Pratt, 19, come from an oxygen-rich sea level environment and normally train on walls between 20’ and 40’ in height so they travelled early to the region to train their bodies as best they could before the competition started. Quito, situated at 2,850m, was the perfect place for the team to allow their bodies to acclimatize to altitude. The climbing wall in Quito is also very similar to the competition wall in Ibarra, both coming in at 60’ in height with steep overhanging walls. Spurrell does have a slight edge as she is the only member of the Canadian team that has competed at the Ibarra site before in 2007 at the World Youth Championships. Both these girls are experienced competitive climbers and train at Maple Ridge’s Rock Wall. They have previously represented Canada in many big international events and will compete this time against the USA, Mexico, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina and Ecuador. Competitors are facing a unique challenge however as Ecuador announced a

Weather is a topic foremost in many people’s minds following the onslaught of snow and cool temperatures that hit the Lower Mainland this weekend. But weather has remained a topic of conversation for weeks now, for dozens of Grade 4 students from St. Patrick’s School. The hype began in preparation for, and continued ever since, celebrity meteorologist Mark Madryga visited the Maple Ridge private school. Madryga is well known as a weather forecaster on Global TV, as well as several major radio stations – including CKNW. And under the guidance of teacher Anna Kravjanski, her Grade 4 class of 26 students had a two-hour visit with this well-known weatherman. “Many students had been watching Mark on the morning news, and were so excited when he walked in that they cheered,” Kravjanski said. “Mark had a lot of energy and shocked the students after telling them that his day starts at 3 a.m. His enthusiasm and genuine love of meteorology kept the students’ interest throughout the talk and inspired several of them to do more research about weather on their own,” the teacher explained. Even though the rain fell outside during his visit, it was a very sunny morning in the St Patrick’s Grade photos contributed 4 classroom; at least durGlobal TV meteorologist Mark ing the time Madryga was Madryga shared some of his insight there, Kravjanski said. into weather trends and monitor “His passion for weather techniques with Grade 4 students shone through during his from St. Patrick’s School. presentation.” He engaged the students, asking them weather-related questions and showing them various weather instruments. The teacher was particularly pleased by her students’ reaction. Student Jenna Tokaryk for instance was beaming after the visit. “It was really fun to learn about weather and how you can predict and measure it. Mark Madryga was a really fun person and really nice,” Kravjanski said. “I was pleased to see them attentive throughout the talk and eager to answer his questions,” she explained. “Some students wanted to use the books we had in the class and their computer time later in the day to look up weather-related information.”

By: Terry Inkler
After a successful run in Ontario, The Roadshow is finally making its way through and where better to start than Port Coquitlam, BC. So you had better search through your attics and garages, go through your lock boxes and jewellery, because you may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it! Roadshow experts are here to examine all your antiques, collectibles, gold and silver.
with a cheque for over $2,100 for jewellery she was never going to wear anyways. Expert Elijah Gold explains, “We have noticed a substantial increase in the amount of precious metals such as gold and silver coming to the Roadshow, which makes sense considering how high it’s currently trading at. He added, “The Roadshow is great because it puts money in people’s pockets, especially during such hard times. Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewellery boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot!”
During a show near Toronto, a woman came in with a jewellery box that she had just inherited from her late aunt. “I don’t wear jewellery,” explained Barbara Engles, “so it was an easy decision to come down to the Roadshow to sell it”. She was very excited when she was able to walk away
At another Roadshow event, a woman walked in with a tin full of hundreds of old coins that were given to her as a young child by her grandfather. She finally decided to come in to the Roadshow and see what he had given her. She was ecstatic to learn she had coins dating back to the late 1800’s, some

of which were extremely rare. Roadshow consultant Perry Bruce explains “We had uncovered an 1871 Queen Victoria 50 Cent piece, valued at over $2,000!! She had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but she was able to sell them for their silver content”. All in all, Roadshow customer Mira Kovalchek explains, “I never would have
thought that my old tin of coins was worth so much! I can finally afford to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”. Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures. Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow. Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by the Roadshow collectors, as
well as a variety of Dinky Toys and Matchbox cars. Lionel Trains and a variety of tin toys can also fetch a price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is looking for one of your collectibles, we can always make an offer to buy it.
A man brought in a 1950’s Marx Tin Toy Robot, in fairly good condition, still in its original box. We were able to locate a collector for that specific toy within minutes, and that gentleman went home with over $700 for his Toy Robot and a few other small toys. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Roadshow, we will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket!
See you at the Roadshow!
