Memories surface with time capsule Former Hammond Elementary students reunited when a series of 10-year-old boxes were opened. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Teletubbies, videocassettes, and old newspaper clippings, letters and cassettes were some of the items pulled from a time capsule put under lock and key 10 years ago by Hammond Elementary kids. Many of those students came back to the school to see what they had put into a time capsule under the direction of then teacher-librarian Phyllis Schnider while the old Hammond Elementary was being decommissioned and the new one was being christened. Although it’s been only 10 years since the capsule was compiled, Schnider said the students have changed a lot and it’s strange to see them coming back to the time capsule opening with their own children. “(It’s) very exciting to visit with students and families that I used to teach at the old Hammond and now to see them all grown up with their own lives,” Schnider said. She was especially happy to hear that many of her former students want to be teachers.

Phyllis Schnider, retired teacherlibrarian from Hammond Elementary, found a copy of the TIMES in a 10-year-old time capsule she opened.

Park Rd. in Pitt Meadows and neighbours called the police to say there was a disturbance at the residence. According to police, the teen and the suspect got into an argument, which turned into a phys-

ical confrontation. The first fight was broken up, at which time the suspect went to another part of the home. Police report, however, that he returned to where the victim was and another confrontation took

place, resulting in the stabbing. A 16-year-old was taken to Ridge Meadows Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. According to police, he was stabbed in the arm and there was a lot of blood at the scene. Mounties arrested Ness, a Port Coquitlam resident, the next day without incident. Crown has not completed the charge assessment yet, according to Crown spokesperson Neil MacKenzie. Crown is reviewing the investigation report, and ultimately it is up to Crown to approve that or other charges. “We did not feel that this person was an immediate threat to our communities, but suffice to say, we needed to protect our

victim and witnesses by making this expedient arrest,” said RCMP Supt. Dave Walsh. “Our officers are continuing their investigation into this matter, and we ask for anyone who witnessed this event to speak with us.” Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact either Const. Shauna England, or Const. Branden Paul, at 604-463-6251. To remain anonymous, tipsters can call CrimeStoppers at 1-800222-8477 or leave a tip online at www.bccrimestoppers.com. Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $2,000 for information leads to an arrest and conviction in an active case.
