Lest We Forget

Always count him in A familiar face at Maple Ridge Remembrance Day ceremonies, Eugene Lambright will not miss this year’s services.

Story and photos by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

After some hesitation, Eugene Lambright will, indeed, attend Thursday’s Remembrance Day ceremony in Maple Ridge. “I’ve been in the legion for 45 years, now and I haven’t missed a Remembrance Day service, yet,” said Lambright, who will celebrate his 90th birthday in early April. Initially, Lambright wasn’t sure if he would attend this year’s services. He told the TIMES last week that the usually inclement November weather would likely keep him

indoors once Nov. 11 rolls around. Since then, he’s changed his mind. “I’ve marched in the rain before,” he said. Every Remembrance Day, the memory of a brother, Ivan, and a nephew, Merle – both casualties of the Second World War – stir up strong emotions in Lambright, who recited the Act of Remembrance at last year’s ceremony in Maple Ridge. Asked what part of Remembrance Day is the most emotional part for him, Lambright didn’t hesitate. “The [moment of] silence,” he said. With crowds at Remembrance Day ceremonies larger than ever in Maple Ridge and across Canada, Lambright believes the message of sacrifice hasn’t been lost on the younger generations. “What we are trying to do is to inform the younger people who want to know what we went through,” he said. “That’s what we are trying to teach the children.” Lambright is a lifelong Maple Ridge resident. “My dad came out here in 1927 to get a job,” Lambright recalled. “I went to the school here in Hammond.” He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in March 1942 and served overseas with the Canadian 15th field artillery before being discharged after the war ended in ’45. “I was at the command post, where the guns are,” Lambright recalled. “My job was to take signals and give them to the officer and he in turn would pass the orders to the gunners. They were out of the way and we had megaphones and loudspeakers to contact the guns.” Lambright toured a year in England, and traversed France, Belgium, and Holland before landing in Germany just before the war ended. “We had an observer up with the infantry,” Lambright explained. “If the infantry was having trouble, this here observer, he would pass orders down to the guns. We took the orders and then put ’em on the guns.” Lambright and his regiment bore the force of fire, both friendly and from the Germans, he explained. “Those Germans, they had artillery, too, and their job was to knock us out,” he said. “We got blasted quite a few times.” continued on page A23…

Canadian country singer Michelle Wright has been performing and touring for the past 20 years, but her current tour has a completely different feel from anything she’s done in the past. In The WrightSongs 2010 tour, Wright will be performing a more intimate, laid-back acoustic show, and she’s bringing that to town this Friday night, Nov. 12 starting at 8 p.m. at the ACT. “Everything about it is different, which has been really fun and exciting and challenging and scary and intimidating and all of those things,” Wright told the TIMES. With only her guitar, a keyboard player and guitarist, Wright said she tries to keep her energy up and make the shows entertaining and dynamic. “It has been really challenging and fun and it’s caused all of us to sharpen up our chops, because there’s no drums banging or bass underneath or lights flashing or any of those things to draw people’s attention,” she explained. “It’s just the three of us and the music. It’s really beautiful actually.” For all those who attend her show, Wright said they, as well as herself, need to enjoy the quiet moments in an acoustic set. “Learning the art of subtlety has been interesting for me,” she explained. “It’s a much more subtle approach that is required and you have to allow for the silence. in the next song, I’m taking off my guitar and setting it on the stand and nobody’s doing anything.” Instead of having a full band and her customary tour buses, Wright said she and her band mates and crew are travelling in two small vehicles, with only six people in all. With their smaller convoy, Wright and her crew have been able to see more of the towns and landscape than ever before. During a traditional tour they would leave at midnight and travel through the night.

“On this tour we’re driving, and I’m driving, because I’m a control freak,” Wright said. “I get to see the countryside and we’ve really been enjoying it.” The acoustic tour started in New Brunswick last month, and the Wright team has been making its way west across Canada. Touring can be tiring, but Wright said her love of music and performing keeps her going. “Besides the fact that it pays the bills – I’m a working musician – I also just love to sing,” she said. “I love to play music with my band

Driver hospitalized after failing to stop for police A Maple Ridge man driving an uninsured car early Friday morning refused to stop for police, flipped his car, and landed in hospital. Ridge Meadows RCMP have recommended sever-

al Motor Vehicle Act charges against the 49-year-old after he refused to stop at about 3 a.m. while travelling through north Maple Ridge. Mounties first spotted the man driving an

uninsured pickup truck, and attempted to pull him over with lights and siren. The man just kept driving at or near the posted speed limit, police noted. The truck headed north on 232 Street, and acceler-

ated once it was past 124 Avenue. That prompted the Mountie to turn off his emergency equipment, but the officer kept following at a distance. When the pickup came to the intersection of Fern

Crescent and 232nd Street, the truck flipped on its roof. The driver, who was by himself in the truck, was injured and had to be taken to Ridge Meadows Hospital by ambulance.

Meadows. There was a large turnout of people at the Pitt Meadows City council meeting last Tuesday night – all waiting to hear if a section of land off Kennedy Road, east of Barnes Road, would go to third reading. However, the council did not approve the proposed bylaw to close the road and sell a portion of the land. They decided to refer the bylaw back to City staff to do a study of the area. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

mates and I love to travel too.” Wright released her first album, Do Right By Me, in 1988, and it has been well received since it was released again in August. “It’s been fun for me to sing some of those songs again; I think they stand the test of time,” she said. “I don’t say that about everything I’ve recorded, but there’s something about that album.” That “something” can be attributed to Wright’s unique sound and lyrics. Her alto voice can be heard on past hits including Take It Like A Man, New Kind of Love and Crank My Tractor. Wright said she still has the same voice as on her first album, it’s just gotten a bit more polished over the years. Her songs continue to appeal to listeners’ emotions, with her humour and insight into human emotions. “I think we’re all kind of living life and going through the same things,” she said. “No matter who you are, our hopes and our hearts, and our needs, and our dreams, and our wants, and all those things I think are the same, in general.” After this tour wraps up, Wright said she’ll be returning home to Nashville, Tenn. “I think [people] might not know that I’m completely sort of a domestic, traditional woman in many ways,” Wright said. “I talk about how much I love being at home with my husband and my doggie, because we don’t have children, and taking care of them and him and keeping the house beautiful and cooking.” She takes advantage of her time at home to enjoy life, help her husband with his business and garden. “I’m like the Martha Stewart of country music, I call myself.” For tickets to the Maple Ridge concert at the ACT, call the box office at 604-476-2787, or visit www.theactmapleridge.org.

Protest

Vets stand for benefits About 40 people attended Saturday’s rally at the local MP’s office.

Grey and damp, rows of veterans stood calmly outside the front door of MP Randy Kamp’s office, standards and medals on display. They came as part of the Veterans National Day of Protest, a Canada-wide mobilization of veterans in support of reforming and protesting the 2006 New Veterans Charter. Under this legislation, they argue, veterans new and old are being stripped of the pensions and benefits they deserve, their security being replaced with lump sum payouts, which Maple Ridge organizer Gary Grigg believes is insufficient. Others agreed, with approximately 40 people having attended the short and simple protest last Saturday morning. For Gary Fourn, a veteran himself, it’s a matter of making sure his son, an engineer headed for his second tour, is properly compensated after returning from Afghanistan. Fourn said the soldiers now “getting shot at” and receiving “more serious injuries” will be worse off in the new system than the pension he received for his diabetes under the old one. Philip Ryan, a former airborne soldier, said he feels the clawing back of pension funds from 65-year-old veterans is completely ridiculous. “To me, that’s a slap in the face,” Ryan said. Minister of Veterans Affairs Jean-Pierre Blackburn announced on the same day

as the protests that changes to the system were underway, including a reduction of bureaucratic process and at least $58,000 per year for the “most severely injured” veterans. However, feelings of goodwill towards the pension system were short as the protest wound down. As the supporters dispersed and headed to the local Army-Navy-Air Force hall, Grigg talked about the impact he hopes the Veterans National Day of Protest will have on the current policy. “This is something we hope we don’t have to do annually,” he said.

Caution: Bad winter ahead!

Prepare today with a BCAA Membership! A dead battery or locking your keys in the car can become potentially dangerous when the weather turns nasty. And with all the talk of a harsh winter on the way, it’s time to think about a BCAA Membership to protect the ones you love. With BCAA’s legendary Road Assist service, you can be certain that help is never far away.

We are in for a cold and stormy winter.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac and local weather forecasters predict that we will be experiencing one of the coldest winters on record, with the heaviest snowfalls in mid- and late December and late February.

Will your car be ready?

One of the best ways to be prepared for the severe weather on its way is to be proactive.

One line of attack is a BCAA Membership.

According to Colin MacPhail, Director, Membership Marketing and Product Management at BCAA, many people wait until the first snowfall to call and by then BCAA is already very busy responding to their existing members. “When it cools down, our call centre gets flooded with phone calls, so we are telling people not to wait until their lock freezes or their car won’t start to call us,” says MacPhail. Meanwhile, winter driving can be rough on your car, which is why it is important to properly winterize your car to avoid costly car repair problems later. Fall is the best time to get your car ready for old man winter.

Here are a few things you can do right now:

Check to ensure you have the proper winter antifreeze and keep it topped up at all times; check tires for tread wear (snow tires are optimum); and have an emergency kit in your car at all times - it should include a shovel, sand for weight and traction, tire chains, a blanket, water, food, candles, a flashlight, a reflector and flares. “Should you get stuck on the side of the road for a few hours, someone should know of your trip plans and when you are to be where,” says MacPhail, adding to always have your cell phone fully charged when going on a long trip.

A membership offers great peace of mind and wonderful benefits.

On top of reliable roadside assistance, members also have access to thousands of Show Your Card and Save partner locations across North America where you can save on travel, hotels, car rentals and much more!

The price for peace of mind?

For details call 310-2345, click on www.bcaa.com or visit your nearest BCAA office.

Less than $100 for an individual membership and even less to add an additional member.

For more information, visit www.bcaa.com.

A fourth mosaic has appeared on the streets of downtown Maple Ridge – this one in front of the CD Shack, on the south side of Lougheed Highway between 223 and 224 Streets. The current downtown enhancement project won’t include any more mosaics – these four cost about $5,000 to make – but the hope is more public art will be integrated into the streetscape of Maple Ridge. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said the mosaics are “awesome” and the District is hoping to build on that success. With the popularity of the first four, similar public art projects could be done by the private sector, Daykin said. “What we’re trying to do is get businesses involved.” Andrew Wood, municipal engineer with the District of Maple Ridge, is in charge of the program and said it would be great if businesses got involved

Chiefs’ duties are ‘sweet’ Two excited children won a chance to be a firefighter for a day, and spent Friday at the Pitt Meadows firehall. by Samantha Shirley-Urano editorial@mrtimes.com

Two Pitt Meadows elementary students got to fulfill almost every child’s dream Friday by spending the day as a firefighter. Ashanti Cristales-Carias, eight, and Ayden Morris, five, won a draw to become fire chiefs for a day. They were picked up at their schools Friday morning in a gleaming red fire truck, rode in the front of the truck, and were shown – throughout the day – what it’s like to be a firefighter. In the morning they visited the public works yard with assistant fire chief Brad

Perrie, saw the maintenance facility, and learned how to take care of the trucks. The children were also given their own firefighting suits and hats to keep, which Perrie said they loved. They also stopped by Pitt Meadows City hall and got to sit in the mayor’s chair in the council chambers. At each stop the children were given candy, and Cristales-Carias’ face lit up when she showed her stash of suckers and sweets in her coat pocket. When asked what her favourite part of the day was she replied, “Everything.” The two children were also treated to lunch at Boston Pizza, and had the chance to hose down and wash a fire truck. Morris and Cristales-Carias both completed home safety checks during Fire Prevention Week in October and their names were selected in the annual firehall competition.

Christmas cheer

Operation Red Nose needs drivers B.C.’s new drunk driving laws mean more people are likely to need rides after a night of Christmas fun. by Samantha Shirley-Urano editorial@mrtimes.com

The time for Christmas cheer and spirits is approaching, but with B.C.’s new tougher drinking and driving laws, getting behind the wheel is even riskier than before. Operation Red Nose, in its third year in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, will offer rides to people who feel they aren’t fit to drive home, but only if they have their car with them. The service will be available on weekends, from Nov. 26 to Dec. 31. “It’s a free and confidential service provided for anyone who feels unfit to drive for any reason,” program organizer Linda Palm said at last Tuesday night’s Pitt Meadows City council meeting.

She said most people who call Operation Red Nose have had something to drink, but volunteers will even drive people who feel too tired to drive home. And given the law changes, Palm predicts there will be an increased need for service this year. Donations are accepted — and encouraged — from those who use the service. Many sports groups volunteer to help, but others are invited to volunteer as well. Guide books about Operation Red Nose and volunteer sign-up sheets are available at the Ridge Meadows RCMP community policing office at 12027 Harris Rd. in Pitt Meadows. To use Operation Red Nose, call 604515-NOSE starting Nov. 26. For more, go online: www.operationrednose.com.

Mailbag

Standing up for our veterans Editor,

As shown by our presence in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, the Persian Gulf War, the mission in Afghanistan and countless peacekeeping assignments around the globe, Canada’s troops have always demonstrated exceptional courage and determination. Our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and airwomen put their lives at risk every day to defend Canadian sovereignty, fight for our values, and help create a fair and just world for every one of us. That’s why our Conservative government is taking concrete action to address gaps in the way Canada cares for our veterans and their families. We are listening to the concerns of military personnel, veterans and their families and delivering real relief for those who need it. Today’s conflicts have created new challenges for our men and women in uniform, and often cause them to serve in unique and dangerous situations. Ensuring our veterans and their families have the support they need, when they need it, is a priority for our Conservative government. We are working to update Canada’s current support system to better reflect the needs of veterans of modern-day conflicts and their families. When troops return home with a service-related injury, making ends meet is a real and significant concern. Often, it is a family member who becomes the caregiver – he or she makes the medical appointments, pays the bills, and makes

sure the children are taken care of. That’s why this fall, our government proposed changes to the New Veterans Charter. It will increase financial support for seriously injured veterans. It will help ill and injured veterans who are unable to return to work by providing them with adequate monthly income through an enhanced earnings loss benefit. It will also boost the annual income for those released at lower salary levels. We have also announced our support of $52.5 million, over the span of five years, to the establishment of a “Legacy of Care” – a suite of five new initiatives to help seriously injured men and women in uniform. For generations, members of our Armed Forces have worked every day Randy to serve our country and Kamp uphold its most treasured Member of values. Parliament Our Conservative government will continue to work with veterans organizations and advisory groups on the issues confronting veterans. We want to help and recognize those who have sacrificed so much to do the job Canadians ask of them. It’s the least we can do for those who have placed themselves in harm’s way in the name of promoting peace and freedom around the world. Knights bound for semifinals After big wins from Blue Atom, Gold Atom, and the Midget Knights on the weekend, all the Knights head to postseason play Saturday.

For the Ridge Meadows Junior Bantam Knights it was yet another chapter in a familiar story for their last game of the season last Saturday. As in games past, another late score kept the Knights from celebrating a victory. Big plays and untimely penalties allowed the Mission Niners to tie the score at the end of the first half and another touchdown late

in the game sealed their 20-12 victory over the Knights. Devon Keoughan, Thomas Janke and William Beale provided key blocks along the offensive line to spring Brian Dongalen for a touchdown. The season ended the same way it started, with Jake Berge tossing a touchdown pass to Matthew Cameron. An injury held up the Midget team at Samuel Robertson Technical field Saturday. The Midget Knights lost 55-0 to Langley, bringing their record to four wins and five losses. The Langley running attack proved to be too much for the Knights to handle. Tyler Cameron, DJ Nicol, Kyle

Deae, Dustin Fletcher, and Josh Guvi put up a valiant effort for the Knights. The team will play again next Saturday against North Surrey at SRT at 5 p.m. In atom action the Blue Knights were 28-0 victors over Mission. This was the fourth shutout win for the Blue Knights this season. Brydon Pollon had a huge day for the Knights scoring two touchdowns – one was a 109-yard scamper, while Blake Alford scored the other Knights touchdown. Defensively the Knights were led by Brock Pelwicki and Cody Stewart. The Atom Gold Knights were 486 winners over North Langley. They take on the Meadow Ridge

Blue Knights Saturday at SRT in first-round playoff action, with a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Peewee Knights also defeated their Mission rivals last weekend, with a 30-0 win Saturday at SRT field. The Peewee boys will take on the Chilliwack Blue in their first playoff game this Saturday at 3 p.m. at SRT. The Bantam Knights were defeated 21-6 by AbbotsfordMission Bantam Saturday. Next, they will travel to Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford for a first round playoff match at 3:15 p.m. Saturday. The Valley Community Football League championship games will be held Saturday, Nov. 20.

Filming

New television show helps locals declutter

Consumed works with 13 families and couples who need organization

NO LONGER AT

With the buying culture common in today’s society, clutter may be a problem for some families and couples in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, but a new television series is coming to their rescue. HGTV Canada is looking for 13 families in the Lower Mainland to be in their new show, Consumed, which will help people whose lives are being hindered by their clutter. The series will offer professional help to get their homes and lives back in order. The show host is professional organizer Jill Pollack, who worked for more than 10 years as a TV producer and has been featured in many magazines and TV shows, helping people find opportunities for positive change in the absence of clutter. She now helps people get rid of clutter

in their closets, garages, offices, kitchens, bedrooms, purses and more. The families on Consumed will undergo a 30-day de-cluttering experiment where they are left with only the bare essentials. The process will be filmed of what it is like for them to live with less. At the end of their experiment their belongings will be brought back and they will decide whether to keep, toss, donate or recycle them. Pollack’s philosophy is to “own your stuff, don’t let your stuff own you.” Filming for Consumed will begin as early as this month and will take place over the next six months. The show will air on HGTV Canada in the summer of 2011. People who feel they need to de-clutter their lives are invited to the show’s organizers via email at papernycasting@ gmail.com or by calling 604-873-9777, extension 253 or 251.

Unveiling of maple leaf carving evokes tears At least 150 people of all ages took their turn helping create the Legion Leaf. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com

Another giant maple leaf has fallen into place in Maple Ridge. This one was erected this weekend in front of the Royal Canadian Legion headquarters on 224th Street. The giant leaf – aptly named the Legion Leaf – is carved out of yellow and red cedar and symbolizing a tribute to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows’ veterans and soldiers and the Canadian war efforts. Applause, speeches, tears, and countless accolades flowed Sunday before a crowd of about

50 – including dignitaries, legionnaires, and members of the Ridge Meadows Education Foundation – who came out to see the unveiling of the carved wooden leaf. This was the second leaf project undertaken by the foundation, but was a joint effort with the local legion and involved upwards of 150 different people who helped carve and erect the piece of public art, explained Cheryl Ashlie, one of the prime organizers. It was over a year in the making, and cost about $4,500 to make. But what makes this project so special, said Ashlie, was the involvement of many youth and seniors who took their turn at carving part of the leaf. The piece was designed by Eric Muller and overseen by master carver Doug Morrison. But at

least 103 people from the community pitched in and helped carve between mid-September and completion on Oct. 23.

“It’s an honour to be part of it,” Ashlie said, amid tears. “I get emotional over anything to do with the war effort, because

of the effects the war had on my life and my father.” But this project is especially dear to her heart, and seeing it realized Sunday repeatedly moved her to tears. A few months after the foundation’s Spirit Leaf was unveiled at the ACT, Ashlie was approached with an anonymous donation of $2,000 as seed money for another leaf project. The only stipulation was it had to commemorate the war efforts. Legion president Jim MacDonald was quick to get the legion involved and proud to let it stand near the front door to the branch office. The educational foundation will undoubtedly do a third leaf project soon, but Ashlie said nothing is in the works just yet. “I just know in my head it’s Pitt Meadows’ time,” she said.

The only time Lambright felt like he was in mortal danger was when the American forces mistook the Canadians for the enemy. “They got us mixed up and they started dropping bombs on us,” he said. “We did have a lot of close calls from the German artillery. They had two or three hits right on our guns. We did get shelled quite a few times.” Lambright learned about the end of the Second World War when he was stationed in Germany in 1945. “We had heard rumours that the war was going to be ended,” he said. “We were sitting around the camp, there, and all of the sudden we were told, ‘The war has ended. Empty guns.’ That means empty our artillery. We were still thousands of miles from

home and we didn’t know when we were going to get home.” He landed on Canadian soil to quite a reception. Lambright said his “whole family was there” to greet him at the Vancouver airport. “There was a lot of people there to see us come in. In a way, it was [emotional]. I hadn’t seen my family for a number of years,” he said. Lambright returned to the Hammond cedar mill, where he worked for 42 years, before and after the war. “Some people say they had to join the army to get a job. Well, I had a job. I worked at the mill,” he said. “When I came back from the war, well, I had a job waiting for me.” He married his wife Alice (since passed away) in 1957 and the couple had a son, Donald.

Swanson,

Mary Elizabeth (nee Heads)

Nov. 11, 1935 – Oct. 28, 2010 On Thursday, October 28, Mary passed away peacefully at her home in Maple Ridge. Predeceased by her brother Bill and sisters, Frances and Thelma. She is survived by her son Michael, his wife Tatiana, her sister Ruth, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary grew up in Vancouver and moved to Maple Ridge in the early 1960’s. She was a registered nurse and worked at Riverview for many years. Mary was well-known throughout the equestrian community. She taught many young people the skills, values, and love of horse ownership. She was a tireless advocate of the rules of the sport and shared her wealth of knowledge to all who needed it. Her organization of competitions throughout the province, particularly Eventing, was outstanding. Her meticulous management of results and awards was remarkable. The community has lost a dear friend and a leader but her legacy of fairplay, organization, and commitment will live on. She was much loved and will be sadly missed by many. A gathering to remember Mary will be held at the Maple Ridge Equisport Centre 21973 132nd Avenue, Maple Ridge, B.C., on Sunday November 14th, 1:00pm-4:00pm

TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
