Marketing company questioned

A Maple Ridge woman just wants out of a business deal she entered with Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing. by Matthew Claxton Postmedia Network Inc.

A multi-level marketing scheme expanding into the Lower Mainland says it can offer its sales force a new job, trips, and even a Lexus if they do well. But a Maple Ridge woman who tried to back out is just trying to get her initial investment back. Susan (not her real name) never got anywhere near a Lexus in her brief

time with Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing. Unemployed since she was laid off several years ago, Susan was invited by a friend who was already a member. The Maple Ridge woman signed up two months ago, paying $299 to become a member. She then had to immediately accumulate three “customer points” to begin selling and recruiting. She paid for the company’s on line office system, which keeps track of sales, a video site, and a telephone service. “It came to another $150 bucks on top of that,” she said. “At first, they seemed very helpful,” she said of the company’s reps. Susan quickly realized that the system was not for her. Within a week of join-

ing, on Sept. 30, she had decided to leave the company, and she tried to get her money back. She had been told she could get her $299 fee back within 10 days, and when she phoned a rep, she was told it would be no problem. Then she received an email saying she would have to return the binders and info packages she’d been sent, and that she would have to fax in a signed statement saying she was quitting. Susan said she believes she sent everything back in time, but she still hasn’t got any of her money back. She said she’s going to keep trying to get her money returned. FHTM calls itself a “network market-

ing” or “relationship marketing” company, using personal connections and social networking to sell a variety of products. The company has come under fire for its practices in the United States, largely because it pays its members for signing up new members. That’s a warning sign that a company may be a pyramid scheme, say government and business watchdogs. Gabrielle Tasse of the Competition Bureau of Canada said standard multilevel marketing companies make their money selling products. “[Pyramid schemes] make their money off recruiting others,” Tasse said.

Police shut down several blocks east of Hammond Elementary and partially locked down the school on Friday afternoon after a man on 115 Avenue threatened to harm himself and anyone else around him. Police were called to the area around

The emergency response team came in an armoured vehicle in case the man had a weapon. “That was our fear,” said Insp. Halloween antics abound Halloween always means an increase in the amount of calls for police service, but because Halloween was on a Sunday this year, Ridge Meadows RCMP were busier on Friday and Saturday. During the Friday nightshift police responded to a total of 94 calls. They then responded to 103 calls during the same 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightshift on Saturday, so 54 calls on Sunday was somewhat calmer. The number one type of call during the weekend was for discharging fireworks, which is a bylaws violation. On Friday there were many complaints about fireworks and disturbances, or noisy people.

On Saturday there were numerous traffic complaints of erratic drivers. On Halloween night there were fewer calls, but there were reports of fireworks, mischief and property damage, and suspicious persons in vehicles. “We knew our members would get an increase in the volume of calls, so we were quite well prepared,” said Insp. Derren Lench. “Looking back at this past weekend I feel our officers did a fine job in keeping our citizens safe. We accomplished this by increasing the number of officers patrolling the streets, which we do on such occasions.”

The District of Maple Ridge will hold a second consultation with stakeholders about developing the Albion Flats after only 16 of 31 groups that were invited attended the one last week. The Albion Flats, which are in the agricultural land reserve, are being considered as a development site, and Maple Ridge council is undergoing consultation with community members on what that plan would look like. At Monday’s council workshop meeting, councillors got an update on the process and decided to include stakeholder groups – that didn’t come to last week’s meetings – in a new meeting. While it might cost more money in consultant fees and compromise the timeline of the Albion process – the

original plan was to send it to the Agricultural Land Commission for consideration to be excluded from the land reserve in March – council decided to hold a second meeting, or meetings, within the month. “This is going to shape what Maple Ridge is going to look over 20 or 30 or 40 years,” Mayor Ernie Daykin said. “So we all want to get it right.” Invitations for the second meeting will go to the 16 stakeholder groups that didn’t attend, as well as the 15 who did attend. The Albion consultation process began in January with a concept plan and background information in the spring. This fall there were stakeholder meetings and then a charette on Oct. 20 and 21. Councillor Judy Dueck asked staff

whether comments and a petition done prior to this process would be considered as input. Maple Ridge CAO Jim Rule said staff wanted to start a fresh process rather than relying on feedback from years back since there wouldn’t be any guarantee some comment might be missed. Spirit Square eyed for market Too little parking made Osprey Village a challenging location for weekly shoppers at the farmers’ market. by Maria Rantanen

Spirit Square might turn into the place to be to get local fresh fruits and vegetables next summer. The Pitt Meadows Festival leadership committee suggested Thursday that the farmers’ market – which was held at Osprey Village this summer – be relocated to Spirit Square on Harris Road. Osprey Village merchants were “disappointed” that it would no longer be near their shops. But according to market manager Eileen Dwillies, the old location didn’t offer enough parking for people who wanted to do their weekly shopping. This summer’s eightweek pilot market in Pitt Meadows was a huge success. But in order to grow, there needs to be more parking, Dwillies said. The Osprey Village Market in Pitt Meadows had an average of 800 customers, which Dwillies said

It took five years to build the Haney market to where it is today. The plan is to hold the Pitt Meadows market all summer, starting in June and going until September. It would continue to run on Sundays, while the Haney market runs on Saturdays. The Haney market has three more market days scheduled this year before

they pack up until next April. The Haney Farmers’ Market hasn’t had any huge increase in numbers of people coming to the market. Customer numbers usually range from 1,200 to 2,000 per week, but the people who are coming are buying a lot more of the products on sale. “It’s just been wonderful – we’ve doubled sales,” Dwillies said.

Another chunk of Lougheed Highway is under construction, this time from Golden Ears Bridge to Harris Road, and it’s definitely affecting rush hour. The good news: Construction of a new HOV lane is set to finish in March 2011. The bad news, commuters can expect traffic delays off and on until then. The westbound north lane is being widened from the bridge to make a new section of HOV lane, said Ike de Boer, engineering coordinator for Pitt Meadows. It will connect with the existing HOV lane west of Harris Road, he explained. “They’ve started already, clearing and grooming,” de Boer said. “They’re going to be closing in a ditch that’s already

With the work there’s going to be a concrete median down the middle.” Lane closures this week will happen from 7 a.m to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, said Baljinder Jacques, a transportation ministry spokesperson. “[Last week] one westbound lane from Meadow Gardens Way to Harris Road was shifted onto an eastbound lane,” the spokesperson said. “One lane was shut down and then moved onto the eastbound lane, so there was still the same number of westbound lanes.” De Boer said there will likely be congestion problems during construction. “I was caught in it,” he said of the construction. “I thought I’d be a smart guy and go that way around when I was working on the east side of Pitt Meadows. a perfect location to explore this form of development. However, the two concepts the charette team came up with do not address the larger needs of this community. In reality, what the team came up with is an expansion of what currently exists. We find ourselves asking the question: If shopping and jobs are a top priority in our community, why is that not reflected on the current options being finalized by District Staff and the Consultant? We know the constraints around the ALC, Metro Vancouver, and the so-called other ‘gatekeepers’ of the Albion. However, why not put our best foot forward and plan for the entire Albion and address all the needs of the community: increased recreation space, more shopping, and greater employment lands? Let’s explore exclusion of the entire study area from the ALR to meet the growing needs of Maple Ridge. We agree that recreation and other public amenities are important. However, the bottomline is that without private investment and the increased tax base that comes with it, those increased recreational items will never come to fruition; at least not without a significant increase in everyone’s taxes. We, as one special interest group in this community, continue to be frustrated by the direction that the planning process is taking particularly now that the draft concept plans do not reflect the larger community need. We know that mayor and council were looking forward to a plan that brought more jobs, more shopping, and more investment into Maple Ridge. This was not achieved by the charette. Where was the disconnect?

With the Albion Flats charette recently completed, Residents for Smart Shopping (RSS) thought it would be appropriate to comment on the various land use options presented at the recent charette open house and what these options mean for Maple Ridge residents who want to see a new shopping centre on the flats. From the outset, we should be clear that RSS did receive an invitation to attend the two-day planning workshop. However, as the majority of our members and interested parties work full-time (many outside of Maple Ridge), we were only able to have a representative present for half of day one. Nevertheless, we indirectly followed the planning workshop and were very surprised by the options put forward by the charette team. It appears that the charette team produced two options for council’s consideration. Both options contemplate varying degrees of development east of 105th Avenue, with significant expansion to the District’s recreational lands and pockets of employment lands here and there. Both options show the lands west of 105th Avenue being left as-is. As many residents are aware, RSS has been advocating for a new shopping centre down on the flats for the past year and a half. As a result, we were very pleased to see the process moving forward and particularly the amount of interest at the community forum in September. However, we have serious concerns with the outcome of the charette. It has been said countless times by our mayor, our council, and many others in this community that shopping and jobs need to be top priority with Albion being

I must take exception to Anne Marrison’s suggestion that domestic cats be allowed to “roam free” outside. House cats and feral cats are proflic killers of migratory songbirds and are significant contributors to the decline in many species, not only in North America, but around the world. Just pop “songbirds cats” into your favourite internet search engine and follow any of the links. Scientific studies actually show that each year, cats kill hundreds of millions of migratory songbirds, and are a serious threat to fledglings, birds roosting at night and birds on a nest. Research shows that de-clawing cats and bell collars do not prevent them from killing birds and other small animals. For healthy cats and wild birds, cats should not be allowed to roam free.

RE: HST has impact on daily expenses, Oct 22/2010, TIMES. Mr. Cant, I fear you are the one guilty of errors and assumptions, the figures I quoted for redecorating our home are as I said in my letter, amounts that would have been exempt before July 1 2010. I originally intended to do most of the work myself, and thus bought all the materials paying the HST and then found I could not do the work because of my condition. I deducted the five per cent GST off the totals in order to show only the increase in cost to me. As far as the HST on my registered therapeutic massage goes, that total is both five per cent GST and now seven per cent increase to give us 12 per cent on our RMT. I used the whole total in this case, as I have been fighting the GST on my massage for years as it is a medical anomaly in being the only registered medical treatment to be taxed in this way and as such is unjustified and just plain wrong, niether the federal government or the provincial government should be profiting from my pain. In fact, Mr. Cant, the only mistake my letter contained was it is a 140 per cent tax increase not 120.

Postmedia Network sat in on a recent FHTM meeting, held in Langley on a Wednesday evening. The emphasis for much of the hour-and-a-half meeting was on signing up still more members. A top rep for the company in B.C. said reps undertake a two-step process: step one is selling products and services, step two is introducing the program to others. “New guests in the room, your job is to build teams of 12,” said Derek Sheane. Along with Jessica Ward, Sheane told the crowd they joined 10 months ago and quit their regular jobs to focus on FHTM full time. Sheane and Ward emphasized that “anyone can do this business,” and encouraged those signing up to then go out and sign up more people. “Then we help them do the exact same thing,” he said. New members must now pay $250 to join. Members then get a $125-directdeposit payment for each new recruit they sign up. The company does sell a number of products online, including vitamins (from a

firm owned by the FHTM founder), travel services, a roadside assistance package, VoiP services, and cellphone coverage. When a product is sold, the sales rep gets a percentage of the value of the sale. For an ongoing contract for cellphone service, the percentage is sent in every month. Rewards and promotions within the company’s structure include a strong emphasis on developing a large network of recruits. Free trips and leased Lexus sedans are available for people who hit certain targets. Sheane and Ward recently qualified for a Lexus. FHTM settled with Montana’s state securities commissioner recently, paying $1 million, including $840,000 in reimbursements to many of its members. The company did not admit to any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

FHTM also had to agree to change its business practices in Montana. It now only charges $75 there to become a rep. The firm has a C- rating from the Better Business Bureau, recently raised from a D. It was as low as an F a few months ago. The firm has racked up more than 50 complaints from across the continent, although none of them come from B.C., and about 80 per cent are resolved. Locally, the firm meets weekly on Saturdays at the Maple Ridge Inn. Local FHTM reps did not answer questions about the firm’s marketing practices, and referred all questions to their Lexington, Ky. head offices. A written list of questions has been forwarded to the company, as per chief operations officer David Mills’s request.

After a disappointing 3-1 loss to the Richmond Sockeyes last week, the Ridge Meadows Flames scored a 6-4 win over the Aldergrove Kodiaks Friday. Flames players Ryan Stewart, Bayne Ryshak and Matthew Keller scored goals in the ﬁrst period. Paul Piluso got a goal in the second period then two more goals came in the third period, from Danny Brandys and Sean Kavanagh. The Flames had six goals for 36 shots in the game.

Men’s lacrosse Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows lacrosse players have joined Burnaby Mountain Selects Elite Touring Teams for this fall. The Atom Gold Knights were beat 24-8 by their blue counterparts this weekend.

Judo club champs The Golden Ears Judo Club had excellent results at the B.C. Judo Championships on October 23 in Abbotsford. Kaitlyn Kilmartin took second place in the junior girls under 48 kg event. Her brother Jordan won the junior men’s under 73 kg division. Josh Jensen, despite an injury, won the junior male under 100 kg category and will represent B.C. in the Canada Winter Games in Halifax in February.

In Knights action this past weekend, the two Meadows Ridge atom teams staged a playoff preview, which saw the Blue Knights post a 24-8 victory over their inter-club rival Gold Knights. The Blue Knights had three touchdowns from Kade Cote, and Kicker Braydon Hamilton had a perfect day as he successfully kicked all three conversions. The Blue Knights defence was led by interceptions from both Blake Alford and Jay Sachar, who each made several key tackles. The Gold Knights got on the scoreboard on the game’s final play, with Michael Howarth making his way into the end zone. The Gold Knights had strong defensive efforts from Nickolas Leinhaas, Cody Hogarth, Mason Wakabayashi, Darius Joseph and Nicholas Stroud. The next battle between these teams will take place on Nov. 13 at SRT when they face each other in the first round of the VCFL Atom playoffs. McLeod Athletic Park Saturday at 11 a.m. The Peewee Knights were defeated Saturday by the Abbotsford Falcons 20-0. The loss means the Knights have secured a home playoff game for the first round of the playoffs. It was a familiar tale for the Junior Bantam Knights Saturday, as they could not maintain a strong start and eventually were defeated, this time by the Abbotsford Junior Bantam team. The Knights held the high-powered Abbotsford offence without a score in the first

quarter and only trailed 14-6 at the half, but they faded later and fell 40-14 to the Falcons. Brian Dongalen had both the Knights’ touchdowns. The Knights finish their season Saturday against Mission at SRT at 2:30 p.m. The Bantam Knights were in the valley of the corn last weekend, where they were outlasted by the Chilliwack Giants 28-20. The Bantam Knights will finish in second place and will host the North Langley Bears in First round playoff action. The Midget Knights remain in the hunt for a playoff spot after a 14-0 win over the Richmond Raiders Saturday. Quarterback Cole Warren threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jaimal Gill, who made a great catch despite a defensive pass interference penalty call on the play. The Knights had a solid running attack with Tyler Morrisette, Martin Duckhorn and Ross Allam leading the way. Morissette scored the other Knights touchdown on a 30-yard run. The defence was anchored by Nick Stoyeff and Garrett Thon from the safety position. Thon had a key interception to end a Richmond drive. The Midget Knights evened their record to four wins against four losses and will play Langley this Saturday at 6 p.m. at SRT.

Cancer agency seeking people for country’s largest study ever BC Generations project will explore factors leading to cancer and other diseases over 20 to 30 years. If you’re a B.C. resident between the ages of 40 and 69 years, the BC Cancer Agency wants you to be part of the largest health research project in Canadian history. The BC Generations Project was launched last year as part of a national study to recruit and follow 300,000 Canadians over the next 20 to 30 years. BC Cancer Agency researchers will investigate how a person’s environment, lifestyle and genes contribute to cancer and other chronic diseases, such as heart disease and stroke, to learn more about prevention for future generations. Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces will also take part. Similar studies are being done in the U.K. and other countries. “It’s a huge opportunity for the current generation to do something for future generations,” says Richard Gallagher, the BC Generations Project principal investigator and senior scientist in the BC Cancer Agency’s cancer control research program. “This could help protect your children, or your children’s children, from getting cancer or chronic disease.” Anyone aged 40 to 69 is encouraged to participate, Gallagher says, regardless of whether they are healthy or have health problems or disabilities. The BC Generations Project was first offered in the Lower Mainland — now it’s

based online, so residents from anywhere in the province can participate. All you have to do is request a questionnaire, which is available by phone at 675-8221; toll free at 1-877-6758221; by email at bcgenerationsproject@ bccrc.ca or online at www. bcgenerationsproject.ca. So far, more than 6,500 British Columbians have signed up. Many endorse the project’s focus on disease prevention; others say they want to contribute to cancer research. BC Cancer Foundation donors are providing funding support to the project. The foundation, which is the fundraising partner of the BC Cancer Agency, serves as the bridge to connect philanthropy to cancer research for the benefit of all British Columbians. As one participant said, “Why not?
