Spa day boosts morale

by Samantha Shirley-Urano editorial@mrtimes.com

Caring Place Ministries was full to the brim Friday with people in need who were given haircuts, manicures, clothes and food at the ministry’s annual Spa Day. Manfred Karczewski, 61, was there looking through the many piles of clothes for size 36 jeans. Karczewski said he has type 2 diabetes; over the last three years he went from being 375 pounds to 215 today. Recently he was wearing size 38 jeans, but he was celebrating the fact they were falling off him. “I plan to donate the ones I get to somebody who might need them,” he said. Karczewski has been volunteering at Caring Place for years. “It’s a good thing they’re doing,” he said. “They actually care about you.” Karczewski, like many of the people at the Spa Day, is not totally homeless. “I find it very difficult to keep my place,” he said. “Rent keeps going up, but income doesn’t go up.” Connie McGonigal, community advocate and volunteer coordinator at Caring Place, said the situations of people they serve are changing. “... Poverty isn’t just homelessness or people that have addictions or mental health issues,” she said. “Now we’re looking at people who just simply cannot afford housing, so it’s an affordable housing issue.” She said more people are being

Dorothy Lawson had a makeover at the Caring Place on Friday. Samantha Shirley-Urano/TIMES affected by this challenge, which is seen by the number of people they serve meals to each night. The Caring Place serves about 9,000 meals a month, which McGonigal said is more than past years. “That’s quite a cross-section of community members, including families and seniors and people who pay rent, but just have no money left for food,” she said. There has been an increase in people needing shelter as well. Usually not as many people need

shelter during the summer, but McGonigal said the shelter was full this summer. There will be space available during the winter, with 30 cold/wet weather beds from November 1 to March 31. Caring Place also offers 25 emergency shelter beds every night of the year and 15 transitional housing beds. By the end of the month families needing shelter will also be able to use a home Caring Place is almost done renovating. “I think the three things we need to get out there are that in order to end homelessness we need to look at people having adequate income, having affordable housing and having those support services available for people who need them,” McGonigal said. Another community organization helping those in need at the Spa Day and every other day is the Alouette Home Start Society. Polly Emery, who works with the society, said she was involved with promoting Spa Day and collecting donations from the community. She said the response was incredible - they received at least

70 boxes of clothes, three boxes of toiletries, shoes and jackets. “We have enough shampoos and soap left over to supply the shelter for a good six months now,” she said. “It was great.” Emery explained that the society is also helping many people and families who are struggling to pay both rent and food. “It’s events like [the Spa Day] that really help because they’re getting some toiletries, clothing and some extra food,” she said. “The Salvation Army was giving away food as well, like bread, pastries and fruit. They could take as many as they wanted.” She said around Easter this year there was a family of nine who moved to Maple Ridge because the father thought he had secured a job, but it fell through. “They found themselves homeless, but between Outreach, the Caring Place and the Ministry, they all worked together to make sure they had a place to stay, proper funding, clothing and someone to work with them to make sure they had suitable housing.” Emery said she thinks Maple Ridge has great collaboration

between community organizations and the Ministry of Housing and Social Development. Another issue in the community is seniors not being able to pay their heating bill and eat. The Alouette Home Start Society and Caring Place recently helped a woman in her 80s who didn’t have heat in her house. “We have those seniors who don’t like to ask for help, who haven’t asked for help their whole lives, and are now having a hard time making ends meet,” Emery said. “...We got the call about the senior citizen, then we talked to the Salvation Army and they were wonderful and helped us out, so now she’s going to have heat. We went to visit her and I think her place was colder inside than it was outside.” Medical services are also provided monthly to people at the Caring Place, and on Friday nurses from Fraser Health attended Spa Day to give flu vaccinations. “It’s a really good way to bring the service to the client, because these are the most ostracized members of the community,” said public health nurse Bella Elphick.

Car impounded for 90 days after driver fails breath test

A-39-year-old Maple Ridge man is the latest driver to have his driving privileges prohibited for 90 days as a result of drinking and driving. At approximately 2:40 a.m. last Sunday, an officer in an unmarked police vehicle noticed a white Ford F350 pickup truck being driven erratically on Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge. The truck initially pulled over, but as the officer approached the driver’s door, the driver sped away. The RCMP Traffic Services helicopter, Air One, was in the area, and easily followed the truck to the 12600 block of 239 Street, where it pulled into a driveway. The driver ran away from the truck, and refused to come out of a heavily treed area when directed by police. A police dog located the man. The man failed a breathalyzer test, resulting in his driver’s licence being prohibited for 90 days and his truck being towed, and impounded for 30 days. In addition, the man was served a violation ticket for failing to stop for police, excessive speeding and driving without due care. No fireworks in Pitt Meadows The City of Pitt Meadows issued a reminder last week that the sale, possession and use of fireworks are not permitted. Firecrackers of all types are illegal in Canada. All public fireworks and firecracker displays must be performed under permit issued by the Fire & Rescue Service with a least one operator possessing a valid Fireworks Supervisor’s Certificate issued by Natural Resources Canada, Explosives Regulatory Division.

Correction

In the article “Pitt dogs attacking cats” in The TIMES’ Oct. 15, 2010 edition, it was mentioned that dogs that are rabid are running around in Pitt Meadows. Dr. Brian Orser of the Alouette Animal Hospital said he knows of no dogs with rabies in the area.

SD42 students called to action

by Jeremy Shepherd editorial@mrtimes.com

Approximately 18,000 young people and teachers packed Rogers Arena last Friday for We Day, an event designed to be a catalyst for a spirit of caring for poor people and the Earth. Anne Hales, district facilitator for School District 42, said about 500 secondary students from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, some sporting Shameless Idealist t-shirts, earned their spot at the event. “We Day isn’t a field trip, it’s the beginning of a year of action in the schools,” she said. Students attending the We Day participated in charitable events like Halloween for

Hunger, where young people collected canned items for local food banks instead of candy. Hales said about 40 more students from district 42 were able to attend We Day than last year, mainly because they take it so seriously. “The schools that treated it as a field trip and didn’t follow through got fewer tickets,” she explained. Despite needing larger buses to accommodate the 40 extra students, Hales said Cantrail Coach Lines charged the school board the same amount as last year. Hales said the event, which featured former U.S. vice-president Al Gore and Reverend Jesse Jackson as well as Rick Hansen, could

Students from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows schools joined thousands of other young people at Rogers Arena to hear Al Gore, Martin Sheen and other celebrities talk about environmental issues. Jeremy Shepherd/TIMES have had a more Canadian focus, but said it’s something she’d be happy to have students take part in next year. “As long as we have the budget for social

responsibility funds next year,” she said. Hales said the event gives students a chance to make connections with young people from across the province who share similar

values. She said it’s very powerful for young people: “To have the Al Gores of the world See WE DAY. Page 7

Bear carcass on private property attracts coyotes by Samantha Shirley-Urano editorial@mrtimes.com

A Maple Ridge resident would have had to remove a dead bear from her property last week, if animals hadn’t dragged it away first. Kristie Gustafson said she found the young bear on Thursday and called different city organizations to see if someone would take it away. “It’s a pretty big shock; it’s a big body,” Gustafson said. She said the bear carcass was lying in bushes near the road, but then she thinks it was dragged closer to the road by coyotes. At 4:30 p.m. Thursday the young bear was lying next to her mailbox. On Friday a black ring of tufts of fur was still visible in the brush at the

first location, and there were stomach contents and remains on the grass near the ditch by 256 Street. Gustafson said she called the local SPCA on Thursday, who referred her to Maple Ridge public works. She was able to reach public works on Friday, who told her the bear would only be removed if it was on public property, like the road. However, the only part of the bear on the road was a blood trail streaking across to a neighbour’s field, where Gustafson thinks animals dragged the carcass. The property is fenced off and there is a line of tall trees. Gustafson said she didn’t want to try and find the bear’s body, because she didn’t know what live animals might be lurking there. She said Friday she was worried

about her neighbour’s horses that might be endangered by visiting animals. “The coyotes were howling like crazy last night, it was just awful,” she said. “We have cougars here. We’re really careful to keep our garbage and dumpster covered. If you have a rotting carcass here it calls in every carnivore for miles.” Gustafson said she sees signs of coyotes, bears and cougars in her yard, but this was a new experience for her. “We hear coyotes, but they’re not usually right in the yard like they were,” she said. She also said she would keep her three cats inside for a few days because of the wildlife in the area. According to Russ Carmichael, the director of engineering operations

for Maple Ridge, anything on private property is the owner’s responsibility. He said public works employees went to the site Friday, but there were no remains on “municipal rightof-way.” If the bear’s body had still been on Gustafson’s property, she said she wouldn’t know what to do with it. Even though she said it looked like it was only about a year old, it was too big to put in a dumpster. She said another option would have been to dig a hole and dump the bear in with a backhoe, but she said she wouldn’t want to do that by herself. “It was just so horrible to sit in here last night and hear those coyotes ripping it apart even worse,” Gustafson said. “It makes me nervous to go out in the yard.”

Police recommend more charges in Pitt rave case Charges are being recommended against two more people in connection with a sexual assault at a Pitt rave in September. Charges have already been approved against a 16-year-old from Maple Ridge, while proposed charges against an 18-year-old and another adult male are now with Crown Counsel for consideration. Ridge Meadows RCMP have prepared a package of information for Crown counsel proposing charges against two adult males.

Police are recommending a charge against an adult male of Distribution of Child Pornography. This is the first time police are making public the proposal of a charge against a third individual, related to the circumstances of this assault. As was reported on Sept. 17 by police, an 18year-old male had been arrested for sexual assault. Police have now prepared a charge for Crown approval for Sexual Assault causing Bodily Harm against the 18-year-old man.

Grad rates rise for learning disabled by Samantha Shirley-Urano editorial@mrtimes.com

School District 42 is putting an emphasis on the success of students with learning and behavioural disabilities, as well as early learning, according to deputy superintendent Laurie Meston. Meston gave an achievement contract update at the school board meeting last Wednesday. The report showed that areas teachers identified as “at risk” for early learning changed in priority from 2008-09 to 2009-10. In 2008-09, teachers identified the top area at risk as literacy, at 39 per cent. Other areas were fine motor skills, attention, oral language and attendance. In the following year, literacy jumped to the bottom of the list, with only 26 per cent. The top at risk area was fine motor skills, with 33 per cent. Meston said she attributes this change to a focus in the district on looking at the whole child and not just intelligence areas. “It’s a whole child curriculum,” she

said. “People have been saying for a long time to look at the whole child and not just get pencils in their hands to do worksheets.” The report also showed teachers view students of aboriginal background to be significantly more at risk than nonaboriginal students in all areas. Meston also reported on students with learning disabilities, saying graduation rates for these students are very low – about 23 per cent federally at a fiveyear rate and 59 per cent provincially at a six-year rate. “This places this demographic at high risk for school failure,” according to Meston. She said she is happy about the fact, however, that graduation rates in the district for students with learning disabilities have improved 16 per cent from the previous year. The district’s graduation rate for these students was 52 per cent in 2007-08 and then rose to 68 per cent in 2008-09. Many of these students have attributed teachers and technology in helping them find success at school, Meston said. Foundation Skills Assessment results

and provincial exams suggest that “kids start to fail much before they get to Grade 10,” Meston said. “We all need to work together. It’s not just a high school problem.” In terms of behaviour disabilities, Meston said schools are “teaching kids how to behave and be clear about what school expectations are.” They are teaching students what respect looks like in the hall, the bathroom and outside, rather than just disciplining or punishing them. The district is also focusing on differentiating learning and behaviour disabilities. Meston said if a child is having trouble writing, they may get frustrated and storm out of the class, then be labelled as having behaviour issues. She said the district is working to separate and deal with both types of issues. She said an area of focus for behaviour disabilities in 2010-11 will be to continue providing special education assistants and in-service opportunities for teachers, as well as counsellors, mental health personnel and student support services staff.

Plastic dog waste bags proliferate at parks

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are producing far too much plastic waste at dog parks, according to one Maple Ridge councillor. Councillor Craig Speirs said Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows go through about 800,000 small plastic bags a year to deal with dog waste at parks. Speirs suggested the district look into some kind of composting at Volker Park to slow down the amount of

garbage being produced. “Since we’re spending so much money on bags each year, I would like to see an alternative.. that includes a digester.” A digester is similar to a backyard compostor, but can handle a wider variety of waste, including meat, small bones and pet waste. Digesters are buried into the soil about 18 inches and can be used year round. The organic waste melts

into the ground, tending to increase the water content of the soil. Councillor Cheryl Ashlie asked city staff to explore installing low-lighting at Volker Park, in order to allow dog owners to keep an eye on their pets during the shorter days of winter. City staff said there have been requests from residents for dog drinking fountains and benches at the park, which were also being

❚ News Bridges

by Matthew Claxton Postmedia Network

A fake license plate allowed a Maple Ridge man to defeat a bridge toll - for a while. Police pulled over a driver who had run up more than 90 crossings of the Golden Ears Bridge, using a fake license plate. Supt. Derek Cooke of the Langley RCMP recently learned of a local resident who had received a hefty bill for repeated crossings of the toll bridge. This was somewhat puzzling, as the man had never crossed the bridge, said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley detachment.

While the owner notified TransLink and got a new license plate, Cooke got the data on crossing times for the fraudulent vehicle. He then staked out the bridge during the suspect’s usual crossing time, and pulled over the car within 10 minutes as it crossed from Maple Ridge. The car’s rear license plate had been altered, Marks said. The altered plate was seized, and the 50-year-old Maple Ridge man behind the wheel was given tickets for failing to display a front plate, altering his license plate, and speeding, for $414 in fines. The information has also been passed along to TransLink for their follow up look into the 90 or so toll charges.

Pitt River Bridge plaques missing

Three bronze plaques commemorating the workers of the Pitt River Bridge have disappeared from the bridge, apparently stolen between Monday and Wednesday. Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating the theft of the plaques, mounted to a concrete wall with titanium rods that were sunken into the concrete. The plaques included the names of all who worked on completing the bridge and was displayed on the east span of the new bridge. The combined weight of the panels is 600 pounds. “At this time police have few leads on this case,” said Superintendent Dave Walsh. “We’re asking for the public’s help on this one.

We’re hoping that someone with information will contact us, and help in getting these plaques back where they belong.” “Peter Kiewit Sons is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the return of the workers recognition plaque,” said Peter Kiewit Sons Co. vicepresident Frank Margitan. “We are extremely disappointed to hear of this appalling criminal act,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond. “The plaque bears the names of hundreds of men and women whose vision, expertise and hard work helped bring this project to completion. At

the installation just a short time ago we watched the pride people demonstrated as they saw their names on the plaque. The goal of the worker recognition program is to create a lasting legacy for the project workers to share with their children and grandchildren.” Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the plaques are asked to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 463-6251. If you wish to remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leave a tip online at www. bccrimestoppers.com. Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $2,000 if your information leads to an arrest and conviction.

Taylor Lewis and Linden Mitchell of the Pitt Meadows Predators U11 team helped cut the ribbon at the Pitt Meadows Community Field official opening on Saturday. Joining them were Matt Newlove and Nathaniel Statham of the PMSS Senior Boys football team, as well as dignitaries from Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. Maria Rantanen/TIMES

Pitt turf field in full use Even before it was officially opened on Saturday, the Pitt Meadows Community Field has seen hundreds of children playing soccer and football on it from both the community and Pitt Meadows Secondary School. The new field has had a “real world impact” on soccer as there are already 18 teams playing soccer on the field every weekend, said Pitt Meadows Soccer Association president Chris Begg. The $2 million artificial turf field was funded by the federal, provincial and municipal governments and School District

42; the Pitt Meadows Soccer Club also gave $100,000 toward the field construction. Begg pointed out that 13 per cent of the population of Pitt Meadows plays soccer with the association. High school football player Matt Newlove said he loves the new field; it’s the best field he’s played on in the Lower Mainland, he added. Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton, who taught at the school for seven years, said the previous field was so muddy students almost needed gumboots to play on it.

Cameras in public buildings

Approximately 28 new surveillance cameras installed in Maple Ridge facilities should help police catch vandals and thieves, according to city staff speaking at a council workshop yesterday. The city had used cameras that rarely captured a clear enough picture to help police identify a suspect, but that shouldn’t be a problem anymore, according to David Boag of parks and leisure services. “The resolution in the system we’re using now is fantastic,” he said. The new high-definition cameras have been placed throughout the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre and the public library. “We never had cameras in the library before. In the leisure centre, we’re replacing existing cameras,” said Michael Millward, WE DAY, From Page 3 Besides the students, Hales said the event is an opportunity for adults to get a different view of today’s teenagers. “When teenagers make the news, it’s not usually for something positive,” she said. “The positive message is harder to sell.” The event featured juxtapositions of politics and pop culture, where images of Nelson Mandela and Harriet Tubman elicited almost as loud a cheer as a recorded message from Justin Bieber. “They are teenagers,” Hales explained. “It is their culture... you have to meet them where they are.” We Day founder Craig

facilities operation manager. Boag said the cameras were being mounted with a view of spots known for being problem areas. One of the cameras is positioned outside of the washroom at the library, which has often been a site of vandalism, according to Boag. Millward said they’ve often been hit with vandalism, including graffiti, and there have also been thefts. He said the buildings are equipped with a prominent flatscreen monitor to let people know they are on camera. Millward said the system is designed to work as a deterrent to potential vandals. Boag was responding to a question from Councillor Linda King, who wanted to know if the efficacy of the newer cameras was being monitored.

Kielburger said the event was a testimonial to the notion that caring could be cool. “When we started we literally got shoved in lockers,” he said. We Day featured a performance by Canadian rock band Hedley, who had recently returned from Kenya with Free the Children, the children’s charity behind We Day. “Quite a few of the artists who performed here do have a social conscience,” Hales said. “Celebrity must be effectively used to advance the cause of social justice,” Jesse Jackson said. She allowed that some students might not be very familiar with Nelson Mandela or Martin Luther King, but

hearing their names at We Day will make some students look them up. Premier Gordon Campbell spoke at the event, receiving a few boos, but Hales said the core of the event rises above politics. “It’s kind of hard to argue against putting wells and schools in villages,” she said. Actor Martin Sheen said the effect of an event like We Day is difficult to measure. “The most profound change is unrecognizable because it’s deeply personal,” he said. Asked if there was anything she wanted people to know about students at the event, Hales said: “They should know that there are good things happening in our schools.”

Halloween is blessedly uneventful at the Chortyk household. My canine collection – Bob the Labrador, Calleigh the poodle and Sam the shih tzu – are strangely oblivious to the fireworks that punctuate the night sky, displaying none of the anxious behaviour that some of my colleagues report about their dogs on All Hallows’ Eve. Prepare your pet for noises and traffic at Halloween

Leave your pet at home Halloween can cause pets to behave uncharacteristically, so don’t take them along trick-or treating. A normally friendly dog could bite if it feels scared or threatened. In addition, dressing your dog in a costume inhibits his ability to communicate,

your furry friends safe: Keep pets inside Pets who are inside have fewer opportunities to confront trick-or-treaters. Keep them in a separate room where they can’t hear the doorbell or doorknocking. Turning on a radio or television in the room is a great way to mask any sounds your pet could find distressing. Also, provide plenty of toys so that their isolation isn’t mistaken for punishment. Think about disabling your doorbell for the night, or, if your trick-or-treaters come in concentrated bursts, wait at the door and greet them before they have a chance to knock. Identification Make sure your pet is wearing identification. Dogs and cats may try to run away if they feel threatened. Clear, current identification is your best chance to have them returned to you. It’s not OK to say it’s OK Avoid consoling your pets by saying things like, “it’s OK” or “don’t be scared” in a soft or sympathetic voice. This only reinforces the fearful behaviour and makes your pet think you’re scared, too. Instead, speak in an upbeat manner. Don’t feed treats to your pets Candy can lead to health problems such as diabetes or obesity, and chocolate is especially dangerous because it contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats. Keep treats well away from Fluffy and Fido.

❚ Our View

Canada listed among world’s top hogs Ranking among the top 10 in the world is usually an amazing accomplishment – but not when it comes to the data released earlier this week. According to WWF International’s “Living Planet Report,” Canada has the dubious distinction of ranking No. 7 among countries with the largest ecological footprints. United Arab Emirates ranks first, followed by Qatar, Denmark, Belgium, the United States, and Estonia. Australia, Kuwait, and Ireland round out the top 10. Canadians, according to the report, consume resources at a rate 2.5 times higher than that of the average global citizen. While that average world citizen uses 2.7 global hectares of land and water, a typical Canadian hogs seven. The capacity of Earth’s ecosystems to sustain the current population, according to WWF International, is a mere 1.8 global hectares of land and water per person. So what makes our ecological footprint so big? Half of it apparently comes from fossil fuel consumption and the resulting carbon emissions. Of course, all geographic regions are not created equal, and it’s probably a lot easier to have a small carbon footprint in Paris or Tokyo than it is in a sprawling Canadian city like Calgary. But at the rate the world’s population is using up resources, we already need 1.5 planets to sustain the pace of consumption, so something has got to change. And rates in rapidly developing countries like India and China will likely grow exponentially in coming years, making the problem more severe. For those of us in the developed, resource-hogging world, there are relatively easy ways to reduce individual ecological footprints, such as composting, taking transit and cutting back to one family car. But there are also a lot of things we could be doing that you won’t hear many politicians touting as solutions, since they’re too controversial – among them eating a plant-based diet and having fewer children. As the situation gets more dire, expect those options to become part of the mainstream dialogue. ■ Your View Last week’s question Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? YES NO

Malcontents should visit Iran Editor: Re: Canada no longer respected abroad, Mailbag, Oct. 15, 2010 A guest editorial from the Ottawa Citizen in the Vancouver Sun states, “The U.N. is a deeply flawed and in some ways a corrupt organization.” It goes further to say that the U.N. is run by undemocratic tyrants, thugs and revolutionaries who band together to implement odious policies. They do not favour Canada because of its strong stance against extremism and terrorism. It is curious how complainers of Canada and its government continue to live here and why others line up to come and some risk their lives in desperation on boats to find refuge here. Perhaps an extended stay in Iran can be arranged for those malcontents who are so dissatisfied with our wonderful country. Cherryl Katnich Maple Ridge

‘Sad day’ for Canada Editor:

Thank you for an excellent editorial regarding Canada’s recent defeat in its quest to be granted a seat on the UN Security Council. How quickly the Harper government has sullied Canada’s sterling international reputation by rejecting our traditional peace-keeping role, turning its back on the world’s neediest and recklessly contributing to global warming.

It is a sad day for all Canadians when we are unable to count enough friends among nations to win such a vote. And then, to add insult to injury, Mr. Harper tries to blame everyone else for his failed policies. Thank you for a succinct and accurate view of the issue. Bob Goos Maple Ridge

see how the HST affects me. I, like many others, live on a fixed pension and I have already since July 1 paid $332.94 more in HST for the RTM I use to control my Fibromyalgia condition, that keeps me out of a wheelchair (not an option), the 18 cents for an ice-cream cone, the 69 cents for a sandwich, and the $165.18 in HST I paid to have the interior of my home painted, which it sorely needed after 22 years (not an option) replacing rusted plumbing and fixtures, replacing bathroom floor $256.90, (not an option). These are just new taxes I would not have paid prior to July 1. This does not count all the other extra HST new taxes I have paid directly or indirectly thanks to your HST, for everything from A&W to death and most everything in-between, but just these few items already tops $755.89 dollars in extra taxes that I would not have paid for the PST, and the HST has only been in affect for 3.5 months. In most countries, a 120 percent tax increase would provoke an instant revolt and I think that is exactly what is happening in B.C. at this time. Bring on the recalls. Wayne Clark Maple Ridge

Students learn Rotary ethical four-way test

Students in local elementary schools are learning how to apply the Rotary four-way test to make the right decision when faced with a challenge. Coordinated by the Meadow Ridge Rotary Club in Maple Ridge, Rotarians from both the Meadow Ridge Rotary Club and the Haney Rotary Club are visiting elementary schools in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge to introduce the Rotary code of ethics. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?” Every Rotarian is required to learn the four-way test. Last year, two Rotary members, school board

Choose furniture to fit your lifestyle Postmedia Network

Whether you want to update your living space or start from scratch, make sure to have fun but don’t forget about function. When you’re looking to outfit a living or family room, it’s important to ask yourself a couple of questions: How the room is going to be used and how many people you want to be able to accommodate. “A lot of it is determined by function,” says Lower Mainland interior designer Sarah Gallop. People with kids and pets will want to choose furniture for its durability; those with a larger family or who entertain frequently will want to ensure there’s plenty of seating. “Think about (how) you live and how you’re going to use it,” Gallop says. There are a number of options out there that can pull double duty for those looking to maximize seating options. Benches or ottomans

can serve as a table or a place to sit when entertaining a crowd. Both Gallop and redesigner Eleanor Hunter recommend starting with the largest piece of furniture when looking to change things up. In most cases that’s going to be the couch, which is also usually the most expensive piece of furniture in the room. Both advocate playing it a bit safer when it comes to the fabric and colour of the couch. Sticking with a neutral tone in a more durable fabric will give the piece a longer lifespan. “You want it to be long lasting,” Gallop says. “That makes more sense with the bigger piece.” It also makes the most sense to start with the couch when deciding the layout of furniture in the room. Hunter, who is also a home stager, recommends finding, or creating, a focal point in the room. That could be an architectural point, such as a fireplace or a window with a fabulous view, or one that you can

The “You want a zig-zag effect couch, she says, should be through your room,” Hunter placed facing the focal point. says. From there, the other pieces “Have fun with it ... don’t - a loveseat, chairs or other stay in a rut. Just try moving seating elements - should be

a couple things and that usually creates a domino effect.” She does, however, warn people to stay away from putting a couch in front of a window as it tends to block natural light and is not the most aesthetically pleasing view from outside. For those on a tight budget, you don’t have to shy away from change. Sometimes even just moving the furniture around can make a big difference. Adding new accent pieces, such as chairs, throws or cushions, to an existing couch can also make a big difference in a room. Gallop recommends considering reupholstering an existing couch or chair if it has “good bones.” A new slipcover or fabric and stuffing can give an aging yet good quality piece a new lease on life. Whatever you choose, in the end it comes down to comfort. “If things are comfortable and inviting, people are going to use it,” Gallop says.

Maple Ridge Leisure Centre clerk Darah Wyant nudged up to one of the scarecrows on display in the leisure centre’s lobby. Downtown businesses are currently taking part in a scarecrow window-decorating contest, with prizes for the three most popular scarecrows. Voting takes place inside the businesses. When you decide which your favourite scarecrow is, go into the business and ask for a ballot. Each participating business has ballots and a drop box. Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Meadowridge Gryphons burn Blazers

Meadowridge School’s soccer team took 19 players to North Vancouver for a game against the Waldorf Blazers last Wednesday. The Blazers have a solid team – they scored 13 goals in their first two league games and have been to provincials in the past, something Meadowridge School wishes to accomplish. Meadowridge’s Gryphons are currently tied for the top spot in the North Division. The boys were told the perfect scenario would be to notch five goals against Waldorf and to get a shutout. Defence was exceptional and anything that did manage to go towards the net was gobbled up by goal keeper, Alex Kwon. Goals were scored by Raheem Esmail, Ashwin Singh and striker Josh Jin, with two goals. The final score was 4-0. Meadowridge will host the first round GVISAA playoff game on the backfield tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. and Thursday they host the first round Fraser Valley Playoff game at 3:30pm. Come on out and support the Gryphons.

Rashaun Simonise (yellow and blue) of the Meadow Ridge Knights powers his way past a dense group of North Langley Bears defenders and towards the end zone in Saturday’s Bantam match-up at the Samuel Robertson Technical Team. Simonise would deke past several more defenders, only to step out-of-bounds several yards short of a touchdown. The Knights beat the Bears 24-0. Mitch Thompson/TIMES

The penalties just kept coming for the Ridge Meadows Flames and their opponents this weekend, with multiple calls for fighting and game misconduct, among other infractions.

Although Abbotsford and Mission had many penalties in their games against the Flames, they both outscored the Ridge Meadows team. The Flames only scored one goal last weekend, compared to the eight scored on them. The Junior B hockey team lost to the Abbotsford Pilots at home

Friday, and the two teams got off to a slow start with a scoreless first period. Two Pilots players scored in the second period, then the Flames returned with a power-play goal at 11:23.

Shane Harle scored the Flames’ only goal of the game, assisted by Matthew Genovese and Sean Kavanagh. The Pilots then scored at 17:12, bringing the score to 3-1 for the Pilots. The third period was rife with penalties, with many players on both teams getting five and 10-minute penalties for fighting and game misconduct.

The last period of the game was scoreless, ending the contest 3-1 for the Pilots. The Flames’ goalie, Tyler Klassen, was awarded the second star of the game. He stopped 39 of the Pilots’ 42 shots, while Pilots goalie Brad Anderson saved 27 of 28 shots on goal. Anderson was given the third star of the game. The Flames played the Mission Icebreakers Sunday at the Mission Leisure Centre, and the Icebreakers shut out the Flames, outscoring them 5-0. Mission scored two goals in the first period, then a third goal in the second period.

In a repeat of Friday’s game, the gloves flew in the third period Sunday, with Flames and Icebreakers getting penalties for fighting and game misconduct. The Icebreakers scored their fourth goal at 6:30 in the third period, 11 seconds after a team penalty for the Flames for too many men on the ice. Mission scored again with about two minutes left in the game, ending it 5-0 in their favour. The Flames are fourth in the Harold Brittain Conference, with five wins and eight losses. The Icebreakers have lost nine of their 13 games this season; Sunday was only the team’s third win. They are fifth in the conference.
