Debate on rave spreads on-line

TRADITIONS ❚ Time for a Feast

by Jeremy Shepherd editorial@mrtimes.com

The 16-year-old girl who was allegedly gang-raped at a Pitt Meadows rave on Sept. 10 has received some support from a Facebook page, while others questioned the credibility of the charges. Photos of the alleged rape have been circulating elsewhere on Facebook. More than 6,000 Facebook users had signed on to the support group by Monday morning, with comments ranging between empathy, skepticism, prayers, advice, mockery, and calls for revenge. Others were horrified at what they decried as a lack of feeling. “I just cannot believe there are some kids out there who still don’t get it, that they still think that girl ‘asked’ for it,” one girl wrote. The page features discussions about the role of society in preventing rape, women’s rights, as well as blunt calls for violence. “If it was my daughter I would kill them all,” someone else wrote. Two people have been charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault at the rave. Police arrested an 18-yearold man last Thursday, and are recommending charges of sexual assault. A 16-year-old was also arrested for allegedly taking photos of the incident and sending the pictures to friends. Police are pursuing charges of production of child pornography

against the 16-year-old. Police have stated that, due to the alleged victim’s recollection of events, it is likely she was drugged. A few Facebook users disagreed with what they saw as an assumption of guilt. One girl commented: “I know it’s an emotionally charged subject, but maybe you all shouldn’t be convicting these boys without knowing all of the facts. Have any of you bothered to listen to the other side’s point of view?” She stated other Facebook users failed to understand the sexually charged atmosphere of raves and the number of youths who take drugs to enhance sexual pleasure. The majority of comments expressed support and sympathy for the alleged victim. “It is good to see Facebook and technology used to heal and bring peace and hope in such dark times,” someone wrote. A Facebook page called Reasonable Doubt in Pitt Meadows has also been formed to counter what they see as one-sided media coverage of the events. “This group is for the people who have yet to jump on the bandwagon headed out to lynch the men/boys involved in the alleged rape,” according to the group’s main page. That group had 35 members as of Monday morning. The alleged victim’s father blasted what he called the “absolutely stupid” suggestion his daughter was not telling the truth about the incident. See p. 3 for related story.

Home for homeless by Samantha Shirley-Urano editorial@mrtimes.com

Families without shelter in Maple Ridge will soon have an opportunity to avoid the elements and live a more normal life in a comfortable home. The Salvation Army’s Caring Place Ministries and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference partnered to bring this home for homeless families to the community. The Caring Place took possession of the house Monday and is in the process of making it an enjoyable

home for families in need. Darrell Pilgrim, the director of the Caring Place Ministries, said furniture was moved into the house Friday, and they are in the process of getting a telephone line there. The ministry’s thrift store will also donate paintings and decorations to the home. On Monday morning, Murray Douglas, the social and communications officer for Division 320 of the Teamsters presented Pilgrim with a cheque for $4,350 to be used for upkeep of the home. RIVERS ❚ Clean-up Time

Man known to police shot A man known to police for criminal behaviour was shot earlier this morning on 124 Avenue near 232 Street and has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries. “I want to assure our citizens this has all the appearance of a targeted attack,” said Insp. Derren Lench. Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to a report of shots fired at 7:45 a.m. this morning.

Ad campaign targets Conservatives Newspaper ads urging voters to dump Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows MP Randy Kamp were paid for by a New York-based group called Avaaz, according to an article in the Financial Post. Avaaz, which is not listed in Canada’s lobbyist registry, paid for several ads to support Liberal and NDP candidates facing conservatives, according to the article.

Drugs

Police warn public about dangers of date rape drug The drug can be slipped into drinks without the victim noticing it. GHB, also known as liquid ecstasy, or the date rape drug, is a synthetic, hypnotic sedative. Short-term effects are similar to those of alcohol, inducing relaxation, mild euphoria, and reduced inhibitions. The drug has also been known to cause nausea, unconsciousness, difficulty in breathing and amnesia. When used in high doses, the drug can be fatal. Dr. Deborah Zvosec conducted a study to determine the number of GHB deaths in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom between 1995 and 2005. She found 226 deaths, including four in Canada. The total includes 19 people who died in car collisions or other accidents while under the effect of GHB.

Her report estimated there were more GHB deaths that went unreported due to inconclusive toxicology tests. If mixed with alcohol, the drug’s effects can last as long as four hours. The drug was initially used as a sleep aid as well as an anesthetic. It has also been used as a treatment for sleep disorders like insomnia and narcolepsy. The drug is frequently used as a powder, and when dissolved it has no colour or odour, but is known to have a slightly salty taste. Because GHB is water soluble, traces of ingesting the drug are difficult to detect after 24 hours. Symptoms of withdrawal from GHB are insomnia and anxiety. The drug is also known as Georgia Home Boy and Grievous Bodily Harm.

HOME, From Page 1 The money was raised at the union’s annual charity golf tournament on Sept. 8 at the Golden Eagle Golf Club in Pitt Meadows. Douglas, who is in charge of choosing a charity for the tournament, discovered the Caring Place’s project through an article in the TIMES in June, then presented it to his colleagues. “We read the article and we decided based on what we read to give our help to Caring Place,” Douglas said. “ ... I know there’s lots of homelessness out there; it’s practically become a part of life. The things that tugged at my heartstrings were innocent children. We can’t help but reach out to that.” The goal of the golf tournament was to give to the community of Maple Ridge. “Part of our mission

statement is to give back to the community where we work, live and play,” Douglas said. “It is our mission to give back to the community and be involved in the community.” Before the Caring Place had this house, homeless families in need would sleep in the boardroom at the Caring Place’s facility on Lougheed Highway. “There is no family pegged to go in right now, but just a week ago we had a family that was staying here at the shelter,” Pilgrim said. “It would have been ideal if we’d had the house then. During the summer we had more calls for help than even the year previous. We feel like the immediate need for this type of housing is right now, and we’re extremely excited to offer it.” The house will be a one-year pilot project, with one family staying there at a time.

An RCMP officer was not seriously hurt when a pickup truck smashed into his police cruiser on 224 Street near 104 Avenue last Sunday night. Const. Curtis Genest was in his police car, assisting the Maple Ridge Fire Department with a structure fire at the time of the collision. He was treated and released from Ridge Meadows Hospital. The pickup truck hit a parked utility vehicle before colliding with the driver’s side of Genest’s cruiser, according to police. Police said the driver of the pickup truck showed signs of having consumed alcohol. The driver declined a request to supply a blood sample, according to police. “We’re happy that neither our officer, nor the driver of the pickup truck were seriously injured,” said Insp. Derren Lench. “This is somewhat ironic in that the new anti drinking and driving laws were about to be implemented after midnight.”

Terry Fox Run raises $20K despite heavy downpour

About 700 Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents overcame stiff joints, pouring rain, waterlogged sneakers, and the lure of a warm bed to complete Sunday’s Terry Fox run. “I don’t think I’ve seen it rain like that in quite some time,” said co-organizer Fran Kemp between coughs. The event raised $20,463 for the Terry Fox foundation, according to Kemp. Kemp said the turnout was slightly smaller than last year, but it was difficult to be sure in the downpour as participants hid under

trees and shared cover. As runners approached the finish line in the 1 km, 5 km and 10 km runs, Kemp described them as: “Wet and extremely happy. I don’t think the rain even bothered them.” Besides the runners, Kemp said she was very thankful to the approximately 45 volunteers who erected the balloon arch, oversaw registration and cheered people on. “It’s very heartwarming to see so many people come together for the community,” she said.

lthough it only had an eight-week trial run this summer, the Osprey Village Farmers’ Market made a splash in the Pitt Meadows community. The Sunday market had about 700 people attend each week, regardless of weather, which ranged from sunny to cloudy to torrential downpours. This past Sunday was the closing day for the trial in Osprey Village, but market manager Eileen Dwillies said rain made things very difficult. “Yesterday was a disaster in weather,” she said. “With all the rain, vendors had tents broken and products damaged and had to go home. The other seven weeks were a success. Pitt Meadows supported it well.” Dwillies said the future of the market at Osprey Village is uncertain, but its success will be evaluated at a meeting in late October with the board of the Haney Market Society, the Osprey Village Business Association and the Festivals Committee of Pitt Meadows. The new market’s older siblings, the Haney Farmers’ Market and the Port Coquitlam Farmers’ Market, have shown that markets generally start to show their full potential after two or three years of operation – once they have become more visible and accepted in the community. Skeptics of farmers’ markets may feel that produce, bread, meat and other products from farmers’ markets are too expensive compared to large grocery stores, but Dwillies said the two shouldn’t be compared. “These are artisanal things,” she explained. “They’re handmade, they’re not done by machine. The prices are all going to be slightly more because the person can’t do it in volume.” However, Dwillies said large-scale farmers’ products, although cheaper, are not nearly as fresh.

Farmers brought their own products to sell at the Osprey Village Market over eight weeks this summer. File photo/TIMES “Because the grocery store buys from huge farmers who have huge fields, they can sell their carrots at 12 cents a bunch,” she said. “You might still get it cheaper at the grocery store, but they could be days old. At the market, they just picked it that morning. It’s much better for human body consumption.” Along with related health benefits, there is also great variety in the produce sold at the market, with everything from green-striped heirloom tomatoes to white, red and brown carrots. Vegetables sold also included purple and yellow tomatoes, striped and yellow beets, black and purple potatoes and a variety of squash. Vendors also sold tomatillos, used in Mexican cooking, and kohlrabi. “At the market you can talk to the farmer, and the farmers often have recipes,” Dwillies said. “We do have recipes for things you don’t know, so this encourages people to use things they don’t know.” Also, instead of just brown or white eggs, farmers sell eggs in colours from black to pink to speckled blue. Local businesses in Osprey Village also pitched in this year, offering free massages and fingernail painting for children. The market was very childfriendly, with games, kinder music, a giant chess set and tomato face-decorating competitions. Goodies for sale at the market also included honey, jams, tarts, pies, candy and smoothies. Crafts and jewelry were sold as well, and musicians played during the four-hour slot each Sunday. Although the Osprey Village market is over for the year, the Haney Farmers’ Market

will continue until the end of November. It is held Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Memorial Peace Park, on 224 Ave. in downtown Maple Ridge. After Thanksgiving it will move to the United Church on Dewdney Trunk Road and 222 St.

KEEPS head program interpreter Ross Davies and Bell-Irving Hatchery manager Darin McClain are looking forward to Rivers Day at Kanaka Creek Regional Park - Waterfront on Sunday, Sept. 26. Troy Landreville/TIMES

Celebrate nature’s arteries on Sunday by Troy Landreville & Jeremy Shepherd editorial@mrtimes.com

Nature’s arteries are being celebrated in Maple Ridge and around the world on Sunday, Sept. 26. That day, Kanaka Education and Environmental Partnership Society (KEEPS) is hosting a Rivers Day event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kanaka Creek Regional Park - Riverfront. Interpretive walks and canoe tours are among the activities offered at the free, family-orientated event. Incorporated into a society in December, 1998, KEEPS has been involved with a diverse variety of watershed activities, with a goal of maintaining the health of Kanaka Creek watershed’s natural ecosystems through education, community involvement, scientific research, land preservations, and partnerships. KEEPS runs the Bell-Irving Hatchery, where the society is headquartered. Ecological education, primarily at schools throughout District 42 as well as with community groups, is a key initiative of KEEPS, noted program interpreter and head program coordinator Ross Davies. “We are trying to get out and teach the kids at a young age just what they can do to reduce their footprint on the planet,” Davies said. Bell-Irving Hatchery manager Darin McClain said KEEPS volunteers play a huge role at the hatchery. “It’s much more than just a couple people running the facility,” he said. “It’s a huge group of people that work together to do that.” McClain said rivers “are the arteries of our planet.” “The biggest thing [about River’s Day] is promoting the importance of the rivers, not just ecologically, which to me is number one, but also economically.

It has been a big part of our heritage and First Nations’ culture for millennia – our heritage for a small blip of that.” Environmental awareness is also a big part of the day, McClain said, “It doesn’t matter if you are seven or 70, anybody can pollute a river and on the other side of that they can do something to clean it up, do something positive.” Davies said that during Maple Ridge’s Rivers Day celebration, visitors will have an opportunity to travel along Kanaka Creek in traditional voyageur canoes. KEEPS have organized Rivers Day celebrations in Maple Ridge since 2003, Davies said, “to make sure that people number one had a chance to see a river, and to encourage them to see nature in their own community and get a better appreciation of it.” The Alouette River Management Society is planning to celebrate rivers with fishing, clowns, painting, live music and a barbecue at Trout Lake Pond. “It’s a laid-back fest in the middle of Allco Park. You can’t beat it,” said Abby Cruickshank, acting executive director of A.R.M.S. The event, which is scheduled to run between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., is about “Coming together as a community to celebrate our natural heritage,” according to Cruickshank. Besides entertainment like Captain Compost, Cruickshank said the event will also include fishing lessons for young kids who want to hook their first big fish. Cruickshank said there will also be volunteers pulling some small creatures from the pond so kids can inspect invertebrates and gain an appreciation of the life beneath the surface of rivers. The invertebrates will be returned to the water after inspection, according to Cruickshank. She said the event will be held near the Rivers Heritage Centre on Alouette Road.

2010RCommunity 2010 IDGE MEADOWS South Haney group looks C OMMUNITY & I NFORMATION Information Safety Fair to clean up neighbourhood Crime Watch

by Jeremy Shepherd editorial@mrtimes.com

Despite fearing reprisals from local criminals, one neighbourhood organizer is doing what she can to make South Haney a little safer, one block at a time. “I’m on their hit list,” said Sara, discussing area criminals. She said police had advised her not to use her last name for fear she might be targeted. Sara is an organizer for the South Haney neighbourhood watch. The group is her attempt to create the same sense of community and familiarity between lawabiding citizens that she believes exists in the drug community, which she says shares the neighbourhood. “The crack addicts and the drug dealers all know each other,” she said. Sara is planning a neighbourhood watch meeting scheduled for this Thursday, between 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living on 224 Street near Callaghan Avenue. She said after spending some time in South Haney, she decided to address what she saw as a lack of cohesiveness in the community. “I came to the conclusion that really no one knew each other in the neighbourhood.” The neighbourhood watch currently has 21 members according to Sara, and more people are joining in walks between 223 and 225 Street between the Haney Bypass and Lougheed Highway. Besides taking walks through the area, Sara said it’s very helpful to make sure everyone in the community knows about recent thefts

and have an idea about the state of the neighbourhood. She said writing down the licence plates of cars being used for drug deals has shown signs of being effective. Sara said she was inspired to begin the organization when she came to the conclusion one of her neighbours was defrauding landlords in order to secure housing for drug dealers. Sara said as more people join in on the walks, fewer people are looking to buy and sell drugs on her street. Sara said part of the group’s success was due to the simple act of putting up lights. She said an alley near a pre-school was frequently a bastion for drug deals and sex with prostitutes, but the area has been much more peaceful since the introduction of a set of lights. “The alley was really dark. You couldn’t even see down it,” she said. Sara said she will be looking for help from the city of Maple Ridge to clean up some particularly bad areas. “This community needs to come together,” she said. Sara said some criminals who know about the neighbourhood watch have identified her. “Three weeks ago someone came and cut the lock on my gate,” she said. Despite her fear, Sara expressed a cautious optimism for South Haney. “It’s getting better, but I don’t have my door open as much as I used to.” Sara said she’s also planning a potluck dinner, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living.

Rave photos opened Pandora’s box

Schwarz & Co. LAW CORPORATION

New technology has allowed the spread of graphic images in a way never before imagined. by Douglas Todd Postmedia Network

T

he depravity exposed when a Metro Vancouver teenager displayed photos on the Internet of a Saturday night gang rape has people shocked about the moral decline of today’s young people. But something else about this repugnant incident looms more important than a debate over what it is about contemporary teens that led a group of males to rape a young woman at a drug-filled rave party in a Pitt Meadows field and graphically let others know about it. Tragically, young people (and old) have done terrible things since human history began. At least since the time of the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates, adults have complained the current generation of teenagers was not as ethically upstanding as they themselves had been. However, this terrible recorded sexual assault, even when combined with other examples of youthful wrongdoing in the 21st century, does not prove most teenagers are going bad. Anyone can come up with myriad counter-examples of positive things done by young people today, including protecting the environment, volunteering at food banks and opposing racism. What is tragically different about this horrifying rape is that it reveals how new technology, specifically social media, can so casually unleash a Pandora’s box of evil. This incident warns us that, in addition to continuing to combat sexual assaults, our entire society must find a way to deal with novel technology that hands a frenzied young nobody the devastating power to offer photo images

of a vicious sex assault to anyone. What’s worse, when these violent sex photos landed on the World Wide Web, they went “viral,” watched by possibly tens or even hundreds of thousands of people, presumably young and old. The photos went viral even though they amounted to illegal child pornography. Despite the fact that they will further traumatize the rape victim – and people connected with her, and others. Despite how they will feed many peoples’ growing addiction to sordid, often-violent online sex, a scourge that is destroying relationships and individuals. Truly, we are not as a society keeping a lid on the new powers associated with Internet technology and social media, which teens and adults have been so vigorously embracing – usually to benignly tell anyone who is interested about their latest party, mall visit or trip. Even though Facebook officials said they took down the Pitt Meadows rape photos after police became aware of them on Sunday, copies had already been downloaded and have since gone into circulation. They won’t go neatly back into Pandora’s box. Given such incidents, it’s odd we still tend to think of technology as morally neutral. Indeed, rather than fret about technology, most of us are inclined to celebrate it, like the way we routinely talk about “technological advances.” However, this one B.C. young person’s sadistic decision to display photos of a rape online throws it in our face: Technology can have a dark side. The evil associated with that rape has now been spread further than would have been imaginable just 15 years ago. Teens will always be a mix of good

and bad. However, as a society, we have not been able to catch up with the licence that the Internet has given creeps, young or old, to devastate the lives of others. New technology always comes as a mixed blessing. The industrialization that made it possible to build more products also led to millions of people working brutish jobs in underground mines or on assembly lines. The automobile gave people the ability to travel faster, but led to untold fatalities. Only recently, with governments demanding seatbelts and air-bags, have traffic deaths been decreasing. Television and film made it possible for billions to be entertained and informed, but also brought teenagers and adults an endless flood of trivial, salacious and gratuitously violent moving images. If justice prevails, those linked with this Pitt Meadows crime will pay dearly for it. Just as importantly, this shocking incident may help the rest of us recognize that our generation is witnessing new “advances” in communications technology that are in some ways out of control. While a few laws have been put in place to deal with the Internet’s unparalleled ability to spread child pornography and invade privacy, it won’t be simple for governments and businesses to preserve Internet freedom while further protecting human decency. We have a long way to go to properly regulate, and educate ourselves about, this brave new high-tech world. See douglas todd’s blog, the search, at vancouversun.com/blogs dtodd@vancouversun.com

Pitt field name being finalized

Despite a few possible irregularities with the naming process, the new field at Pitt Meadows Senior Secondary will be named the Pitt Meadows Community Sports Field, according to Pitt Meadows Councillor Deb Walters. “It will be finalized at council next Tuesday,” Walters said. School board trustee chair Ken Clarkson said the naming of the field was somewhat disputed because the regular process was not followed. “When previous fields were named it went to school board, city council and then parks and leisure,” Clarkson said. Clarkson said there was nothing underhanded about the process, although it

didn’t follow what he said was the traditional order. Pitt Meadows Councillor Gwen O’Connell said everyone contributed to the process. She said there was some talk about naming the field after the school, as the field is on school property, but the city has the right of way. “Most of us felt quite comfortable about naming it after the community,” she said. Walters agreed. “There were a lot of people in the community who pushed to bring it to fruition,” she said. “It’s to be inclusive of the entire community and not just the secondary school.” O’Connell said council has not heard from the school board about the name of the field.

HST campaign wants MLAs held accountable for new tax British Columbia’s Fight HST campaign is looking to hold MLAs responsible for the tax, including Maple Ridge MLA Marc Dalton. Fight HST calls their

campaign, MLA Survivor Recall, a competition among 18 provincial ridings to see which MLAs will be targeted first for recall votes. The group has trained their

sights on 18 MLAs, including Dalton, for recall over the harmonized sales tax. The recall initiative requires 40 per cent of registered voters in a riding to sign up.

High price of drinking and driving

Everyone knows the high price society pays for drunk driving. Deaths and injuries are at the top of the list. When you see those flashing red and blue lights and ribbons of yellow police tape surrounding a mass of twisted metal, you know that alcohol or drugs was likely involved. Those crashes send people to the hospital, and all too often they take lives. In fact, 133 people lose their lives to impaired drivers every year on average in B.C., and thousands are injured. Among those injured is most recently a Ridge Meadows Mountie, hit by a suspected impaired driver on the weekend. The loss for spouses, parents, children, siblings and friends of the dead are incalculable. We can tally the other costs: long hospital stays, lost working hours, higher insurance premiums, police salaries and overtime for drunk driving road checks. We all pay for it, even those of us who are fortunate never to be hit by a drunk driver. The great mystery is why there is still drunk driving at all. It may be that those who drink and get behind the wheel are simply so astoundingly self-centred they can’t see the potential costs of their actions. For them, the B.C. government has put into place the toughest impaired driving rules in the country. If our drunk drivers are basically selfish, perhaps this will get them to sit up and take notice. Drinking and driving in B.C. will now lead to an assault on your bank account. For a .05 blood alcohol concentration, drivers now face a $200 fine and three-day driving ban. Try explaining that to your boss on Monday. Those with more than .08 will face a 90day ban, a $500 fine, and will have to pay to install an ignition interlock device. The fines only go up for repeat offenders. It’s those longer driving bans that we particularly appreciate. Taking away the vehicle from someone who endangers others on the roads seems like perfect justice. Emptying their wallet is a nice bonus. – M.C.

Web uncontrollable The news of an alleged gang rape in Pitt Meadows and the spread of photos from the incident hit international news last week. Horror was expressed by the RCMP, community members and most decent human beings about not just the alleged crime, but how the pictures were disseminated and the lack of power anyone has over what happens on the Internet. This story with its myriad ugly details should serve as a serious wake-up call to us all about the power of the Internet. We need to rethink our morals and behaviour around its usage. ■ Your View Last week’s question Is Gordon Campbell a worse premier than Glen Clark?

What’s happened to chivalry? Editor: Re: Locals gather To the young men of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows: what has happened? I am a PMSS graduate of the class of 1982. I know that may seem like a long time ago to you. But I need to know what has gone wrong. In my time in Pitt Meadows what happened to the young woman last weekend at the rave would have been unthinkable. We lived by a code if you will. I believe you would know the word chivalry. No? Go look it up. It’s important that you do. We were far from perfect then but we knew that what defined a real man was his respect and ability to protect a woman if necessary. Call me old fashioned or even old school but I know this is right. If a guy was known in my youth to have abused or hurt a woman (girl) in any way he would have been ostracized and dealt a blow to his masculinity he would never forget. What is wrong with you guys? Who in the hell do you think you are? You are the stronger sex but you are not a man until you can control that strength and use it wisely. I know there are gentlemen among you. Do the correct and truly manly thing and turn in these disgusting individuals who committed this alleged crime. They are not worthy in my book of the title man. Remember these other things: porn creates victims, disgusting anti-female t-shirts and stickers hurt women, hurting women with your brawn does not make you a man, it makes you a loser. We need to take the male reputation back. Don’t fall to peer pressure to become a loser. Brent Caughy Mission

Show compassion for refugees Editor: Re: “The Truth about the Tamil Tigers” Sept. 14, 2010 I wanted to respond to Lyn Cockburn’s excellent editorial. It is important that people understand the situation in Third World countries where civil wars exist. It is hell, especially when you lose your fight for an independent state. For one, there is nothing new about people fighting to establish their own homeland or state. How do you think the state of Israel was established in 1948? And yes, the Irgun, which was labelled as a terrorist group used violence and bombings to drive the British Mandate out of their homeland. Menachem Begin who was part of this “terrorist” group later became the prime minister of Israel in the 1980s. Or Valimir Jaboinski who stated “With Blood and Fear We Build Us a Nation!” How many of you know that Israel’s Mossad was arming both sides of the conflict years back, and that the armament industry is behind many of these wars and conflicts. Anything to make a buck, right? Whether you like it or not that’s exactly how many nations were forged, through wars and bloodshed. Just like America! The Tamil Tigers are no different than those who fought for their lands and independence. The only difference is that they lost, and are now fleeing for their lives. I don’t blame them for wanting to have a better life for their families and children. Have you got any idea about what happens when you lose your struggle and the military then

If breast cancer is found at an early stage there is usually a better chance of successful treatment. Finding cancer early may allow for more treatment options such as less aggressive treatment or breast conserving surgery. Breast screening is the regular examination of a woman’s breasts when she has no signs or symptoms of breast problems to detect breast cancer at an early stage. Two common methods of breast screening are: • Clinical breast examination • Screening mammography Although not a screening method, something you can do on your own is to be “breast aware”. Being “breast aware” means knowing how your breasts normally look and feel. That way, if there are any significant changes, you’ll be more likely to notice them and can have them checked by a doctor. It is possible for breast cancer to develop without any changes that can be easily noticed through self-examination, which is why breast screening is important.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Breast cancer is believed to be a result of inherited and environmental factors, although currently we do not know the precise causes of breast cancer. Therefore, we do not know how to completely eliminate the risk for breast cancer. However, you can make choices that may reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. Many of these behaviours may also help reduce the risk for other conditions. Here are some steps you can take that may reduce your risk for breast cancer: • Carefully consider the risks and benefits of taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT), especially for more than 5 years. • Carefully consider the risks and benefits of using oral contraceptives. • Maintain a healthy body weight. • Be physically active. • Limit your alcohol consumption to one drink or less per day. • Avoid tobacco smoke, both active and passive (second-hand), especially if you are a young woman. • Eat a healthy diet. Essentially backlogs of blood within blood vessels, varicose veins can cause pain and even bleeding. Clusters of cells come together in the human body to form valves within blood vessels. Think of them as nature’s own backflow preventers. But when the valves don’t work, blood pools in the vessel and you’ve got varicose veins. It can be time to see the medical equivalent of a plumber. “When you have valves that don’t work, you get back pressure along the leg,” explained Dr. Peter Fry, of Langley’s West Coast Vein Clinic. A vein specialist, Fry has spent many years in medicine, taking him from the era when varicose veins were stripped out in a painful process to the modern era when medical foam and lasers can be used to close off non-functioning blood vessels. So what causes varicose veining? “Pregnancy is a big thing,” Fry explained. “Standing is another. More women than men get varicose veins. “When men get it, there’s usually a hereditary issue,” Fry explained. Most people have — or know someone who has — spider veining. That’s when blood cells are caught in the small vessels near the surface of the skin. Spider veins are typically a cosmetic issue. Treatment for the cosmetic varicose veins is paid for by the patient and often done in doctor’s offices. It’s when the vessels bulge or become shiny or crust

over (a sign that they could rupture and bleed) or cause other symptoms that people typically require medical attention. Symptoms to be concerned about include tired, heavyfeeling legs, leg pain from prolonged sitting or standing, swollen ankles at night, tingling, tiredness, burning or cramping in the legs or feet, discoloration of the skin, or open sores/ulcers on the legs. People should also be aware of family medical history. Using an ultrasound scanner, Fry can show patients the movement of blood through the lowerpressure vessels closer to the skin. (The deeper vessels are high pressure, quickly moving blood around to the organs). The ultrasound helps him determine the best course of treatment. Treatments have become more streamlined and less

invasive in recent years compared to the days when surgical stripping was the method used. For more severe cases, surgery may be needed. A doctor goes in through the groin and disconnects the low pressure surface blood vessels where the varicose veining has occurred from the higher pressure blood vessels. Variations include using a laser or a radiofrequency device to close off a particular vein. Treatment can also involve medication injected into the blood vessel to staunch the flow of blood through it. In foam schlerotherapy, foam is injected into some vessels. Doctors use the body’s own defense mechanism to help treat varicose veins. When the needle is inserted, it irritates the vessel, causing the valve to close. See VEINS, Page 14

Chiropractors to promote health in Latin America

Stress in our day-to-day lives has been shown to have crippling effects on our health and well-being. Stress in our nerve systems, known as vertebral subluxations, has been shown to interfere with our overall state of balance, resulting in a list of many health challenges one can go through from digestive problems to mild anxiety, to troubles taking in a deep breath. And if you have neck pain, back pain, or headaches, chances are your spine is subluxated, says local chiropractor, Dr. Nima Rahmany, who helps correct and prevent all these conditions, to name a few by “adjusting” these subluxations. Dr. Nima is joining 79 other chiropractors from around North America during the last week of September and early October in remote villages of the Dominican Republic in a humanitarian effort for those who have no access to the appropriate care. “We’re going to be adjusting between 100 and 2,000 people per day, depending on the VEINS, From Page 13

The injected fluid works by irritating the blood vessels for a short period of time. As the injected material is absorbed by the body, the sides of the vein stick together, no longer allowing blood into that area. While non-cosmetic schlerotherapy is covered by the Medical Services Plan, wait times are long and many people opt to have the procedure done through clinics where the costs run from $700 to $1,100.

village we’re sent to,” he said. “It’s sort of a ‘chiropractors without borders’ mission, only we’re also going to be teaching people healthy lifestyle habits as well, and how to keep their spine and nervous system healthy.” Dr. Nima heard about Chiromission.com in a seminar in Las Vegas earlier this year, and as soon as he got home started making plans with his wife to go. “She’ll be documenting the trip, and I’ll be doing some blog posts about the experience,” he said. “I anticipate it will be life-changing.” The local chiropractor says the trip aligns perfectly with his mission to teach people how to enhance their health and all areas of their lives without the use of pharmaceuticals or surgery, and to correct subluxations in as many families as possible. “I see the devastating effect of subluxations on people’s lives and I want to reach those who don’t have access to chiropractic care and proper health education.

Fry noted that another option for large, non-cosmetic varicose veins is laser therapy to close off troublesome varicose veins. The procedure can be done in a doctor’s office, but is not covered by MSP at this time, despite being less invasive than surgery. Varicose veins will continue to be a problem for many people, particularly as the population ages, so it’s good to know that doctors are coming up with less invasive and less painful ways to treat this common problem with human plumbing.

Short literary bits and bites for long, dark autumn nights

The days are getting shorter, summer is fading into the sunset and your time is more cramped than ever. The joy of leisurely summer reading seems a distant memory. Don’t despair. Pick up some short fiction or non-fiction for a literary snack. Darwin’s Bastards: Astounding Tales from Tomorrow is a collection of science fiction stories by Canadian writers. The hook is, that with the exception of William Gibson, none of these authors are known for writing science fiction. Contained in the pages are weird and wonderful tales by the likes of Annabel Lyon, Timothy Taylor, and Douglas Copeland. Stories range from Heather O’Neill’s “The Dreamlife of Toasters,” which tells of one summer evening in 2075, when a robot called 4R6 experiences a “human act” that changes not just her life but all humanity, to Yann Martel’s micro-short story entitled “We Ate the Children Last,” about what happens when you cross a pig and a human. The collection is edited by Vancouverite Zsuzsi Gartner. One of the hottest examples of cross-media pollination is Justin Halpern’s Sh*t My Dad Says. While not technically composed of short bites, it is a book you can dip into for quick bursts of laughter. Born out of Halpern’s Twitter feed of the same name, the book is a hilarious account of life with his father. If the title didn’t already give it away, the book (like the tweets) is jammed with expletives. Coming this fall is the sitcom version starring William Shatner. The Book of Awesome: Snow Days, Bakery Air,

Ridge Meadows Hall of Fame Society

Finding Money in Your Pocket, and Other Simple, Brilliant Things by Neil Pasricha is another book born out of social media. In 2008, in response to the depressing events happening around him, Pasricha started blogging (see http:// 1000awesomethings.com/), listing one of life’s little awesome moments each day. From baby toes to illegal naps to getting the eyelash out of your eye, the book offers snacksized observations to lift your outlook and maybe encourage you to make your own awesome observations. For a bit of spine-tingling sensation, try Stephen King’s Skeleton Crew, a collection of short stories that includes the novella “The Mist.” Originally published in 1985, it is now available as a CD book, so now you can be “creeped-out” while you’re on the go. Both formats are available at the Fraser Valley Regional Library. And before there was Stephen King, there was Edgar Allan Poe, now also available for audiobook download from the FVRL website (www.fvrl.bc.ca/ play/download_home.htm). Mysteries aren’t just a summertime luxury. A New Omnibus of Crime, edited by Tony Hillerman and Rosemary Herbert, brings together 26 stories by renowned mystery and crime writers from across the globe. Each story is accompanied by a short essay that explains the importance of the story in the progression of crime and mystery writing. The collection covers work from 1930 onwards. Authors included range from Dorothy L. Sayers to P.D. James to Alexander McCall Smith. A venerable master of the “everyday” tale is storyteller and author Stuart McLean.

His stories originate from his Vinyl Café series on CBC Radio, but have long been collected and published in book form and in audiobooks narrated by McLean. Follow the lives of Dave and Morely and their kids, Sam and Stephanie, as they grow up. There are several volumes of Vinyl Café stories. Some are

poignant, some are funny, but all are entertaining. Come by the Maple Ridge Public Library this fall and take advantage of programs and special events for every age group. In addition to our daytime storytimes, you’ll find Pajama Storytimes for preschoolers on Friday nights, Oct. 15 to Nov. 26.

Older kids should look for the after-school Friday Fun Club in November. Teen Quiz Night is back on Nov. 20, and Teen Movie Night happens once a month on Wednesdays. For adults, there are beginner and intermediate Spanish classes as well as a new computer series.

These are just a few of the programs and special events happening at the Maple Ridge Public Library. Check out the program brochure or website at www.fvrl.bc.ca/ read/library_mapleridge.htm for all the dates and details. Chris Conroy is a librarian at the Maple Ridge Public Library.

❚ Community

Film community bands together Molly Parker and crew filmed movie so Tracy Wright could be in it before she passed away. Pitt Meadows-raised actor Molly Parker covers her eyes and looks, for a split second, entirely bereft. She’s talking about Tracy Wright, her colleague, peer and co-star in Bruce McDonald’s new movie Trigger. Parker isn’t in a state of sudden grief over the passing of Wright, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer shortly after wrapping her work on the film. She’s in a state of tumult because she’s desperate to remain genuine and emotionally present as she talks about Wright’s last movie with the media. The only problem is, as one of the Canadian starlets doing press here at the Toronto International Film Festival, she’s been doing it all day long. “Honestly. How do I talk about it?” she asks, her clear blue eyes emerging from behind her pale hands. “It’s not about . . . ,” she hesitates. “This is about making a movie in that ... oh God. Sorry. I’ve been talking all day and it starts to feel reductive to the experience. But we, Daniel (MacIvor), wrote this thing for us to do. Bruce sent me a postcard about it the year before and we were probably going to shoot it this summer,” says Parker of the movie that was originally conceived as a My Dinner With Andre type of film with two rockers. “Then Tracy was diagnosed at Christmastime and Bruce asked me to come (to Toronto) and just read it. It was great . . . . And Tracy really wanted to make it.” The only catch was the shoot about two female bandmates reuniting for one more show had to start very quickly. Parker says Don McKellar, Wright’s longtime partner and Canadian entertainment icon, said there wasn’t much time at all. “Don said the only way to do it was if you do it right now. Like, right now.” With a $10,000 cheque from Callum Keith Rennie, McDonald had enough money to go out and buy film stock and pay for craft services. The rest of the immediate production support came from the Toronto filmmaking community at large, who all knew Wright, and were eager to do what they could to make her last film as good as it could be. “We started shooting the next weekend . . . and that first day, we shot 35 pages of dialogue.” For those who know little about the film industry, 35 pages of dialogue generally

represents about 1/3 of the movie – and would normally take weeks to complete. Parker says the pace was so quick, there was no time to prepare or rehearse her role as the more successful half of the rock chick duo who lost touch with her punk soul. “There’s a look that I was going for. I don’t even know the word for it, but very L.A., you know. Not a lot of makeup on but perfectly done eyebrows, nice skin,” she says. Parker even borrowed a pair of boots from a friend of hers in Los Angeles to help her nail the character because in Parker’s mind, “shoes count for a lot. They ground you in the part. They define the way you walk.” Parker says the black brogues she’s sporting today make her look intelligent, even though she has blisters from breaking them in. She’s not complaining. In fact, the one thing shooting Trigger reaffirmed in Parker’s mind was the importance of being in the moment and accepting the things that are entirely

Molly Parker (right) and Tracy Wright (left). Photo submitted beyond your control. “We shot the film in nine days . . . . Don McKellar actually lay under the table in case we forgot our lines,” says the actor who broke out in the wake of Kissed, Lynne Stopkewich’s necrophiliathemed drama. “I was very conscious the entire time that this would probably be the only time I would get to spend with her (Wright). But also, that we got to spend this time doing something we love to do ... She was a terrific actress,” says Parker. A winner of independent film awards and one of the stars of the Sundance hit, Miranda July’s Me and You and Everyone We Know, Wright rarely got the chance to star in a leading role – which is one of the reasons why she spent the last days of her too-short life completing Trigger. Parker says she was moved

by how the Canadian, and specifically Toronto, creative community came together, from Rennie’s first production financing to Sarah Polley’s performance as a surly stage manager, to Carole Pope’s benefit concert. “It really felt like family,” says Parker, who had worked with McKellar and Wright on the now-iconic TV series cocreated by McKellar, Twitch City. “We both tried to be present . . . and to play these characters to the best of our abilities given the time we had. I saw a rough cut of the movie right after Tracy passed away, and to be honest, I don’t know what I saw ... but I saw her. And one of the things that was so amazing about Tracy was her absolute being in it. She did the work. She didn’t complain. I think I liked acting more on those days than I have in years.”

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Flames down rivals in weekend games The Ridge Meadows Flames Junior B hockey team won their two games this weekend, raising them to the top position in the Harold Brittain Conference, with a 3-2 season record. In a close game, the Flames beat the Abbotsford Pilots 4-3 Friday night. After an Abbotsford goal near the end of the first period, the Flames’ Ryan Stewart scored a power-play goal, tying the game 1-1. The Flames took the lead with another power-play goal in the second period, by Tristano Falbo, but Abbotsford returned with two more goals, putting them ahead 3-2. Tensions rose and penalties were high in the third period, when Jake Howardson tied the game 3-3 with a powerplay goal. The Flames then clinched the win with a goal by Danny Brandys, ending the game 4-3. On Saturday the Flames continued their winning ways, beating the Squamish Wolf Pack 6-4. The Flames were up by two at the end of the first period, with goals by Matthew Keller and Danny Brandys. They extended their lead to 4-0 in the second period, with goals from Adam Bartsch and Dustin Cervo. Squamish scored just moments before the end of the second period, then scored a power-play goal in the third period. The Flames returned with a goal by Matthew Keller, bringing the score to 5-2. Squamish scored two more goals, but with an unassisted goal by Felix Fiedler, the Flames held their lead, finishing the game 6-4. The Flames face the Delta Ice Hawks in a home game Friday at Planet Ice at 7:30 p.m. They will then play the North Delta Devils at the Sungod Arena in Delta at 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
