The local minor lacrosse association feels it’s not getting its fair share of field time. Ridge Meadows Burrards Minor Lacrosse Association’s president Lance Andre said he was told at a July meeting with Parks and Leisure staff that the association shouldn’t register more players because there aren’t enough fields available. Field time is allocated according to the number players registered in the previous year. “If we’re told to cap our numbers, how can we ever grow and get more field time?” Andre said. Lacrosse has up to 11 teams on a field at the same time, which means kids as young as seven are on the field at the same time as 18-year-olds. This year, the association was planning to have a girls’ field lacrosse team after the girls’ box lacrosse players expressed interest in a girls’ field lacrosse team. When the association said they wanted to start a new girls’ program, they were told they would have to integrate the practices and games into their current allotted time, Andre said. However, girls’ field lacrosse is played without helmets and isn’t a contact sport like boys’ field lacrosse and therefore the two can’t co-exist
on the same field. Girls’ field lacrosse is growing rapidly, Andre said, but because the association got no increase in field time, they couldn’t form the team. Girls from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows who want to play field lacrosse currently go to Langley or Port Coquitlam to play. The lacrosse association has 150 registered players while the two soccer associations have 1,800. Andre said he knows they are smaller but they aren’t asking for an “outrageous” amount of time. But if they can’t increase their numbers, they won’t ever get more field time as time is allocated according to registered players. “There have be some concessions made...to be able to grow into the field time we need,” Andre said. The association would like to have two practice times per week — so that the younger players and older players can be practicing at different times for safety reasons — and six hours for games on Sundays. With a brand new turf field at Pitt Meadows Secondary, the minor lacrosse association thought there would be an increase in practice time, but the association didn’t get any increase this year. ❚ Parks and leisure staff didn’t return repeated calls by press time.
Census changes upset council
The elimination of the long-form census may force the district of Maple Ridge to make decisions in an information vacuum, Councillor Linda King warned during a council workshop yesterday. King is one of several Maple Ridge councillors planning to appeal to the federal government to continue using the long-form census. The federal government announced the decision to switch to a shorter census last July. The government has announced plans to replace the long-form census with a voluntary survey. Completing the census is still mandatory. Councillor Cheryl Ashlie cautioned that focusing solely on the long-form census was a distraction from other surveys the government has eliminated. She said the federal government has eliminated a household spending survey, a workplace survey and a survey of financial security. King remained focused on the long-form census. “I would rather do something immediately about the long-form census as it’s something of an emergency,” she said. King said the ramifications of eliminating the census now could last 10 years. She said the lack of information could hinder council’s ability to make informed decisions regarding housing and land-use. Mayor Ernie Daykin agreed, questioning doing away with the long form. Ashlie expressed concern about who would fill the information void left by the elimination of the long-form census. She suggested private companies might provide statistics for a price. “You can’t have that,” she said. Councillor Craig Speirs blasted the federal government for doing away with the long-form census. “We need this information and this government is really out of touch with municipalities,” he said. Speirs said the long-form census had been effective for the last 40 years. ❚ Council is planning to vote next Monday on a letter that could be sent to the federal government asking for reinstatement of the long-form census.

Some stolen boats recovered
Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit has recovered five recently stolen aluminum boats, a stolen tent trailer, and a stolen boat trailer. Last week, Ridge Meadows RCMP members were alerted to a series of boat thefts in the area, mainly involving aluminum boats. An investigation into the thefts
resulted in the execution of a search warrant on Thursday at a residential property in the 22700 block of Ritchie Avenue, where the recovered boats and trailers were being kept. Two men, ages 39 and 33, along with a 28-year-old woman, have been arrested, and charges are being recommended. “We’re very satisfied with
our investigation to date,” said Superintendent Dave Walsh. “We have recovered some of the stolen boats, getting them back to their rightful owners, while also identifying suspects, who we’re looking at charging criminally. With this matter going in front of the courts, I cannot divulge the full
details, but suffice to say that some citizens played a great role in assisting us. We’re still looking for more of the stolen boats, and would like to encourage the public to call us if they have any knowledge as to the whereabouts of the boats, or any further suspects.” ❚ The investigation is continuing. Pitt pool one step closer to closure The fate of the Harris Road outdoor pool will be decided by Pitt Meadows council after a recommendation to close it by Parks and Leisure Services was forwarded to the city. The final decision to close the pool has to be made by Pitt Meadows council. If any repairs are done to it, it would come out of the city’s budget. If the city decides to look into repairing it, a feasibility study would be conducted to see how it could be repaired and what the cost would be. The pool lost on average 25,362 litres of water per day this summer and it has been difficult to keep it warm enough for swimming lessons. Parks and leisure staff think the problem is most likely being caused by corroded pipes around the pool. Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean said he expects a report to come to council for consideration at the end of September.

driveways. TransLink and the district are both contributing 50 per cent of the cost to install a traffic signal and widen the road on the northwest side of the intersection. Work has already begun and is expected to be completed by the end of October, according to district staff. One resident who lives next to the intersection said it was about time something was done. The resident said the traffic on 128 Avenue has gotten “much worse” since the Golden Ears Bridge was built.
“It’s very treacherous trying to get out of these driveways,” said Brenda, who lives on 128 Avenue, but didn’t want her last name to be used. Cars going through the intersection don’t necessarily obey the traffic signs, she added, so she hopes the improvements will make a difference. There used to be pedestrians and horses using the roads in that area, said the long-time resident, but now it’s too dangerous for them. The project was part of the Major Road Network’s minor capital program. There are major changes coming to where 128 Avenue meets 224 Street.

anet Henry went missing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside more than 13 years ago, but after more than a decade of heartache, her sister is still looking for her. Sandra Gagnon, Henry’s sister, said she’s hoping a recently announced inquiry into the investigation of serial killer Robert Pickton might finally provide some answers. “I’m really relieved there’s going to be a public inquiry,” said Gagnon, who works at a seniors’ lodge in Maple Ridge. “I’ve been fighting for that for a long time.” B.C. Attorney-General Mike de Jong announced the investigation September 9, following a report detailing the missteps of the Pickton investigation released by Vancouver Police Department Deputy Chief Doug LePard last August. Gagnon, who called for a public inquiry in an email to de Jong earlier this month, said she hoped to discover: “Just why and how the police could make so many mistakes.” Gagnon said the slow response of the police may have cost some women their lives. She fears her sister was one of Pickton’s victims.

Gagnon said she used to speak to Henry every day, but in late June in 1997, the calls stopped. “Even when I wasn’t home she’d leave a message,” she said. Gagnon said she has heard stories, although not directly from Henry, that her sister had visited Pickton’s pig farm shortly before her disappearance. Gagnon quoted a friend who said Henry told her she had been to the farm and seen women being assaulted, remembered the smell of the pigs, and would never go back of her own accord. Seated in front of her computer and looking at old photos of Henry, Gagnon described the soft voice and frequent laugh of her sister. Henry left behind a 12-yearold daughter who is now married and had considered
a career in law enforcement, according to Gagnon. “I told her that her mom would be so proud of her,” she said. Gagnon also spoke about Henry’s skills with embroidery and hairdressing, and how Henry helped Gagnon through her divorce. It was shortly after Henry’s own divorce she started spending more time on the Downtown Eastside. “She didn’t like doing what she was doing but it was an addiction. I think she hated herself for it,” Gagnon said, her voice wracked with sobs. ❚ Gagnon has a Facebook page called Janet Gail Henry remains one of the Missing Women. Visitors’ centre studied by Maria Rantanen

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are considering the construction of a new visitors’ centre. A comprehensive report by a consulting firm reviewed tourism opportunities in the two communities and presented different models and locations for a new visitors’ centre. The report notes that visitors’ centres are expensive to build and run, but they are still considered important in extending
visitor stays and increasing how much visitors spend in the community. A visitors’ centre has many roles including giving information to tourists and marketing the area. The Pitt Meadows Economic Development Corporation’s board of directors reviewed the report and disagreed with the suggestion a future visitors’ centre be located at 224th Street near the ACT. The reasons the board gave were that it wasn’t near either bridge and would be a difficult location
to accommodate large recreation vehicles looking for a place to park. The board also suggested looking at a combined chamber of commerce/ visitors’ centre model and considering the current location on Harris Road for the centre. Other possible locations the board suggested were near Meadow Gardens Golf Course or at Lougheed Highway and 200th Street. There is no funding identified in either community for a new visitors’ centre, and the Pitt
Pitt looks at graffiti fines
Graffiti artists should look over their shoulders in Pitt Meadows as the city plans to crack down on illegal tagging. The City of Pitt Meadows is proposing a bylaw that would impose fines from $160 to $200 for placing graffiti or neglecting to remove it in a timely manner. If someone is caught placing graffiti with the City of Pitt Meadows, they can be fined $200. The bylaw also targets “owners and occupiers of real property” and will require them to remove the graffiti. Hate graffiti and graffiti with profanities is required to be removed within 48 hours of notice being served while other graffiti should be removed within 14 days of notice. If the graffiti is not removed, the property
owner or occupier can be fined $200. In addition, if the graffiti isn’t removed by the specified time, the city can remove it and charge that back to the person responsible for the property. The staff report on the bylaw notes that if graffiti is left and not removed it gives the impression that the area is “uncared for and unsafe” and will encourage more graffiti and other vandalism and crime. Graffiti on property owned by Crown corporations or public utilities is the responsibility of those agencies. The staff report states that some agencies remove graffiti quickly while others require repeated calls to get it removed. It costs the city about $7,500 a year for the operations crew to remove graffiti.

Pepper spray on school grounds
Ridge Meadows RCMP are recommending charges against a 23-year-old man who allegedly used pepper spray against another male. The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. on Thursday on the grounds at Eric Langton Elementary School. The victim was taken to Ridge Meadows Hospital by members of the B.C. Ambulance Service, where he was treated and released. The suspect was arrested later in the evening when he turned himself in at the Ridge Meadows RCMP.
Dump truck rolls over
Ridge Meadows RCMP were called to a residential construction site where a dump truck had rolled onto its side. Police were called at approximately 7:40 a.m. on Friday to 237
Street and Kanaka Way. The driver of the truck was able to escape any injury.

Landlord, tenant get into altercation
A heated argument between a tenant and his landlord has resulted in Ridge Meadows RCMP arresting the 33-year-old male tenant. Just before 1 p.m. on Friday, the suspect and the victims got into a verbal argument on Lorne Avenue in Maple Ridge. It is alleged the suspect used pepper spray, and uttered death threats toward the victim and her family. The suspect was driven away from the scene, but was stopped nearby by a patrol officer and taken into custody.

Ridge Meadows RCMP are looking for a white utility trailer that was stolen from a property on McKay Avenue in Maple Ridge. The trailer, which was built by the owner, had British Columbia Licence plate #984029 on it, and was stolen sometime between 9:30 and 11 a.m. on Friday.

Police are investigating the break, enter, and theft from a business in the 20400 block of Lougheed Highway Maple Ridge. Sometime during the night of Friday, or early morning hours of Saturday, a rock was thrown through the front window of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car, allowing thieves to gain entry and steal a computer monitor and modem.

idge Meadows RCMP are looking for two males who robbed a young man of his cell phone and wallet. The incident took place at the Haney Bus Loop, which is situated just north of the Haney Place Mall, at approximately 2:40 p.m. on Sunday. The suspects approached the victim and demanded he turn over personal property to them. The thieves ran away after getting his phone and wallet, towards 226 Street and Lougheed Highway. The pair are described as both being white males, approximately 20 years of age, 5’10” to 6’ tall, and both were slim build. They were wearing baseball hats, hooded sweatshirts, one light coloured and one dark coloured, and blue jeans.

SPCA asks public to help them refresh I
f you could end the suffering of innocent animals in just five minutes a day, would you do it? Every year in B.C., thousands of animals are abandoned or dropped off at animal shelters because no one will care for them. You could become a hero to these animals if you have a few minutes a day to spare and a mouse ... a computer mouse that is! The SPCA has a chance to win $100,000 in the Pepsi Refresh Project, an online grant program where individuals vote for their favourite community project. From Sept. 1 to Oct. 31, the BSPCA is asking animal lovers to log on to the Pepsi Refresh site to vote for the SPCA pet
overpopulation project. The project will help end the tragedy of abandoned and unwanted animals in B.C. by providing low-cost spay/neuter operations for hundreds of animals across the province and by funding B.C.’s first-ever study to identify local solutions to pet overpopulation issues. We’re facing stiff competition in the Pepsi Refresh campaign and we urge all animal lovers to rally and cast votes in support of our project. People can vote every day between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31 - the grant will be awarded to the project with the most overall votes after two months. Steps to vote: 1. Visit refresheverything.ca.

Public has a snobby attitude when it comes to getting a pet shelter dogs in B.C., the idea that you can’t get exactly the dog you want unless you go to a breeder is a tragic misconception. “If they are set on getting a particular type of dog that suits their lifestyle and that they prefer, there are rescue groups for certain breeds and we recommend that they try and find those groups locally to find a particular breed rather than going to a breeder first,” said Fricker. According to Kim Monteith of the Vancouver BC SPCA, its shelters are a revolving door of exotic and pedigree puppies and adult dogs. The key is just to keep checking. “If they only knew; I had two purebred Yorkies in here last week,” she said. “One was six months old and one was a year and a half. We’ve had beagles, poodles, a goldendoodle. We’ve had them all.” More than just a repository for downtrodden dogs, shelters such as those operated by the BC SPCA have programs to ensure all their animals are of a suitable temperament and training-level for potential adopters and are in the best health possible. This, said Fricker, raises another misconception that people have about going to puppy mills: that if you’re paying a lot of money, you’ll get a healthy pet. “The big issue is genetic defects,” he said, noting that inbreeding among selectively bred dogs has brought about several hundred
It’s official: British Columbians are dog snobs. But according to animal welfare advocates, that’s nothing to be proud of. A national survey has found that more than half of British Columbia’s dog owners - 51 per cent - bought their dog from a breeder rather than adopting a homeless canine from a shelter. This figure represents the highest instance of breeder-bought pooches in the country, a full eight points higher than the 43 per cent nationally. The Harris-Decima poll also found that Canadians are mostly unaware of the sheer number of homeless shelter dogs across the country. The largest proportion of the poll’s 1,008 telephone respondents -- 11 per cent -put the number of unwanted dogs brought to shelters in Canada every year at 10,000. According to the survey’s statistics, the actual number of dogs admitted to shelters annually is over three times that, at more than 36,000. Many of these animals are destroyed when homes cannot be found for them. Peter Fricker of the Vancouver Humane Society wouldn’t speculate on why British Columbians seem to be excessively picky in their preference for pet stores and puppy breeders over the local pound, or whether the figure suggests there are fewer shelter dogs in B.C. to choose from compared with other provinces. He noted, however, that with thousands of
genetic diseases. “People pay huge sums of money for pedigree dogs and often they have all these genetic defects.” These defects can prove costly, as vet bills for surgeries and long-term care pile up. If the owner can’t afford or doesn’t want the continuing expense of a purebred dog, the animal ends up in a shelter anyway. Increasingly, however, breeders are crossing different pedigrees to avoid the pitfalls of a shallow gene pool. According to Corry Anderson-Fennell,
spokeswoman for the SPCA, the organization’s 31 shelters across the province took in 8,798 adult dogs and 2,157 puppies in 2009. The Vancouver shelter took in 632 dogs; Surrey had 1,234; Burnaby 442; and the Victoria branch had 679 dogs surrendered to its care. These numbers, which do not include municipal pounds and private animal sanctuaries, suggest the Harris-Decima poll’s estimated 36,000 sheltered dogs nationwide is low. — Postmedia Network

PM’s photo op sends message
Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s recent jaunt around the Arctic has all the hallmarks of cheap political theatre. Photos with smiling schoolchildren and a roguish joyride on an ATV make for easy and favourable media coverage. But it’s unfair to simply dismiss the trip, which is now an annual event for the Prime Minister. Gestures are important in politics, and having our elected leader show his face in the Far North reminds our neighbours that we are paying attention up there. This is worth doing. What was missing from the trip, though, was an acknowledgement of why it is so important. It isn’t because the Russians flew some routine reconnaissance flights nearby just after Ottawa announced an expensive new fighter jet purchase, and it isn’t because a few dozen shivering Danish tourists recently trudged around a disputed patch of rock called Hans Island. It’s important because the Arctic is going to look radically different very soon. Largescale international shipping and resource extraction will be arriving there within a few years as the ice retreats, and it’s vital that we assert our right to impose our standards, particularly environmental ones, on these activities. It is the failure of successive governments to face up to climate change science that is driving this change. Canada is far from the only culprit, but we haven’t been part of the solution either. It’s absolutely right for Harper to have his picture taken in the Arctic, but by rights he should be kissing babies in front of the Alberta oil sands as well.
Dying to be debated
It may surprise some that it is the most Catholic province in Canada that is leading the debate on euthanasia and assisted suicide. Public hearings on the right to die with dignity got under way in Quebec. It’s a debate that should happen across Canada as the boomer generation faces its mortality. Quebec’s College of Physicians has said euthanasia should be considered in the case of “imminent or inevitable death” if the patient consents. There are, of course, fears that any such move might lead to a slippery slope of “persuasion” in a drive to save health-care costs. But the likelihood of highly trained and ethical doctors somehow being transformed into unfeeling creatures of the state seems farfetched. As for the right to die, many will recall the case of Sue Rodriguez, smitten with Lou Gehrig’s disease, who was denied the right to kill herself by the Supreme Court of Canada in a narrow 5-4 decision in 1992. She killed herself anyway two years later and her case sparked the last big debate in Canada on assisted suicide. It’s time for another. And, since any federal government would want to follow rather than lead its people on this emotional issue, it would be better if a national forum for feedback could be established. To School District 42: As parents of a student attending Pitt Meadows Secondary, on one hand we are extremely pleased with the new turf field and look forward to its use within the district. But at the same time we are deeply disappointed that somehow you seem to have missed the boat with regard to scheduling time on the new field for school sports. In this case, football. Somehow the decision was taken to ignore the requests of the high school athletics department for times allowing our senior varsity team to play under the lights on Friday nights. Friday night lights is not only traditional in high school football, it serves the purpose of letting working parents, friends, and other family, not to mention the community at large, attend games, and generate excitement for the school, the community, and just as importantly, the team. Being able to draw a large attendance allows the football program (and the school in general) to fundraise to the maximum extent, so that funding for the sport(s) does not have to come solely from the players, cash-strapped families and other sources and programs. This past Friday’s game (Sept. 10) was the one and only game that will be allowed to take place under the lights, and even though there were no bleachers, the attendance was in the neighborhood of 300, either standing or sitting on the ground outside the fence, or just inside the fence on the wet turf. They seem to understand what a crowd can generate. We are only talking about approximately five home field games in the regular season, and any games in finals are usually scheduled at other high capacity venues. Why can’t some accommodation be reached? I am asking you to consider, even re-consider your decisions with regard to the scheduling of this field, if not for this year (although that would be great) then certainly for next year. I don’t understand MLA Michael Sather’s opposition to the North Lougheed
Connector. Nice guy, but definitely not in touch with current and future reality. His commitment to saving agricultural land is admirable, however in the face of increased residential development and the impending growth and number of people of moving into the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows area based upon improved transit, it seems to me that a more compromising approach on his part instead of standing in the way of progress is necessary. He states that with an extra bus lane being built on the Lougheed Highway and a possible new intersection at Harris Road and Lougheed Highway, that he does not think that the North Lougheed Connector will be needed and the “time difference” is going to be minimal. In my opinion, moving traffic down the Lougheed Highway is not the issue here. The issue is moving traffic from Lougheed Highway east through Maple Ridge and easing the pressure on Old Dewdney Trunk Road. With the new regional growth strategy, transit improvements like the North Lougheed Connector are inevitable and the millions of dollars necessary to construct it would not be spent if as Mr. Sather suggests the time difference were minimal. ver the years, Fred Elder has been an active and prominent supporter for people living with cancer. Little did he know, prior to being diagnosed with bile duct cancer in January, 2009, just how deeply the insidious disease would touch him on a personal level. Bile duct cancer is rare, and affects the mid-digestive tract. Symptoms include jaundice, itching of the skin, light or clay-coloured stools, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, fever, abdominal pain, and bleeding. According to HealthLinkBC, in most patients, the tumor cannot be completely removed by surgery and is incurable. “I didn’t even know what a bile duct was,” said the 57-year-old Elder, on medical leave from the RCMP. “You have no idea about all these intricate systems within your body.” What Elder initially thought was a common rash turned out to be much, much more. “I started getting [the rash] on my arms and legs, and the next thing you know, they lined me up for a CT scan,” he said. Research has given Elder extra time to enjoy life “A specialist knew right away that I had problems with my bile duct. He didn’t know it was cancer, but he knew something was blocking my system and my body was toxic. It happens to people but you don’t expect it to happen to you. I never really had any real serious health problems, then this comes out of the blue and you hit the wall.” Elder (pictured), who was diagnosed with stage four of the cancer, said “you can’t live without your bile duct working properly.” After undergoing his first major surgery at Royal Columbian Hospital, he was struck with terrible news. “They said I had 30 to 90 days [to live],” he said. “I said, ‘Hey, what about the cancer clinic and chemo and other options?’” No treatment was available for him, he was told. “The bottom of your world... it falls out,” he said. “It’s an emotional roller coaster. All of a sudden, all your plans, all your dreams, everything changes. Then you refocus and develop a new game plan. My family, my friends, and some of my coworkers have just been wonderful.” Following his diagnosis, Elder looked for answers at the B.C. Cancer Agency in Abbotsford. Within about 30 days of his visit, Elder learned about trials in England where two types of chemotherapy were being combined to slow the growth of bile duct tumors. To allow bile to continue to
on science, and what science is, is cancer research, and that’s where every dollar that is raised from the Terry Fox Run, hopefully will benefit people with cancer,” Elder said. “Cancer has no borders with ages or sex. Cancer is an enemy to everyone.” The local run is being held Sunday, starting at the Hammond Community Centre at 20601 Westfield Avenue. ❚ Registration is at 8:30 a.m. followed by the run at 10 a.m. Routes of 10, five, and one kilometer are available. Elder said the lab support workers and staff at Ridge Meadows Hospital and in Abbotsford have been hugely supportive. “They are wonderful and are really considerate, compassionate and just kind,” he said. “Really it makes the journey through this labyrinth of medical appointments bearable.” Cancer kept him from taking part in the Terry Fox Run last September, but he’s back this year to assist local event organizers Joanne Rensmag and Fran Kemp. “There are two sides. You are always hoping for a miracle, and on the realistic side of things, you are depending

flow from his liver while taking toxins out of his digestive tract, doctors inserted a large metal stent into Elder’s bile duct in March, 2009. Seven months of chemotherapy at the BC Cancer Agency followed. The treatments helped slowed the growth of his cancer. Until recently. “What’s happening now, is my cancer count is starting to go up again, so I’ll go back and they’re expecting to do chemo again here in the latter part of September and early part of October,” he said. Cancer research, which Elder said is “paying dividends every day,” has bought him more time to spend with his family and friends. In between treatments, Elder has made day trips to Victoria to visit
his daughter Sarah, and flew to Toronto to see his other daughter Katie, who now lives in Singapore. “If I would have got this [cancer] a year prior [to his original diagnosis], they wouldn’t have any treatment for me at all, or they would have tried things that haven’t worked in the past,” he said. “Now, with these two types of chemo... it’s not putting it in remission, but it has allowed me more time.” Elder’s connection to cancer extends beyond his own experience. His grandmother succumbed to the disease; so did his sister Gail, who died from ovarian cancer on July 18. Gail battled cancer for seven years and over that time, educated people across Canada
about the disease. “She won the Canadian Cancer Society educator of the year award for 2007,” Elder said. “She was an invaluable resource when I got diagnosed, and helping me come to terms with all the medical issues and terminology. She was a guest speaker across the country. So when I first got diagnosed with my cancer, she guided me. She was better than having a doctor.” Gail continues to be his inspiration. “My sister was courageous in the face of cancer. You see this time and time again with people with cancer. They rise up. The number of appointments and blood tests and juggling all of these things, it’s an emotional roller coaster.”

Taekwondo school eyes big prize A taekwondo school is aiming to win a lump of cash for Maple Ridge in a national competition. Tae Geuk Tae Kwon Do has recently opened its first branch school in Maple Ridge and as a launch, they have registered to participate in a competition hosted by True Sport. True Sport is a national organization dedicated to the growth of community sports. The competition they are hosting involves local sports groups competing to do something good for their community on Sept 18th. The sports group that wins the competition wins $5,000 to $10,000 dollars to the city of the winning organization. To win the competition for the city, Tae Geuk Tae Kwon Do is holding our grand opening as both a grand opening and a food drive. They will be offering trial lessons this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as an opportunity to meet the three Tae Geuk Tae Kwon Do Olympians. There will be a taekwondo demo from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. To attend the event, all that is required is a non-perishable food item that will be donated the food bank. Flames struggle in early season
he Ridge Meadows Flames Junior B hockey team finally got a taste of victory in its third game of the regular season beating the Mission Icebreakers 8-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Flames played their first regular season game on Wednesday night in Aldergrove and lost 4-2. Aldergrove was leading 3-0 almost halfway through the game before the Flames’ Ryan Stewart scored to bring the score to 3-1. The third period saw one goal from each team – CJ Legassic scored for the Flames – and the game ended 4-2. The Flames played the Grandview Steelers on Friday night at Planet Ice and lost their first regular season home game 3-0. The Steelers scored late in the first period on a power play and twice in the second period, but, in the third period, goalie Tyler Klassen shut out the Steelers. On Sunday, the Flames were back in a scoring mood – they got eight goals past
the Mission goalie out of 57 shots fired. Dustin Cervo scored the first two goals of the game and with a third one from Shane Harle, the Flames were ahead 3-0 by the end of the first period. With a goal from Legassic, the Flames had a 4-0 lead at the end of the second period. With Mission players warming up the penalty bench, the Flames scored four power-play goals in the third – one from Sean Kavanagh, one from Harle, one from Brent Fletcher and a final one from Paul Piluso. It wasn’t until the last four minutes that Mission scored two goals against the Flames to end the game 8-2. The Flames play the Abbotsford Pilots at the MSA Arena in Abbotsford on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. They then travel to Squamish to face the Wolf Pack at the Brennan Park Arena at 7:15 p.m. Their next home game is on Friday, Sept. 24 when they play the Delta Ice Hawks.
The community football season continued this weekend with away games for the Meadow Ridge Knights. The Midget Knights travelled to Mackin Park in Coquitlam but they were unable to overcome an early score as they fell 7-0 to Coquitlam. The Knights’ defence was lead by Martin Duckhorn and Jordan Gjaltema. The game ended with the Knights knocking on the door, but they were unable to score the equalizer and dropped their record to 1-1. In Bantam action the Knights engaged in an epic defensive struggle with the Abbotsford Falcon with the game ending in a scoreless draw. The Knights were led by the strong play of Jessie Goertzen, Brett Boyce and
Nick Bradberry. The Junior Bantam Knights were led by the strong running of Brian Dongalen and the pass catching of Bryce McDonald, who had his first career reception. Brandon Shanley led the defence but the Knights fell 44-6 to the Abbotsford Falcons. The Atom Blue Knights were idle this weekend. The Knight have their home openers Saturday at the Samuel Robertson Technical field. The games start with the Blue and Gold Atom Knights facing each other at 11 a.m. and end with the Midget Knights taking on Mission at 6 p.m. Throughout the day, the Peewee, Junior Bantam and Bantam Knights face teams from North Langley.

Both Thomas Haney Secondary and Westview Secondary are looking for parents to volunteers to help run and coach their sports teams. Both schools are holding recruitment dinners hoping parents will come out to get more information and sign up to help keep school sports running. Westview needs parents to help drive teams to events, to manage teams or just be at the gym during games. THSS needs parents to manage and coach some teams. The two schools are holding separate events this Wednesday evening, Sept. 15 at their respective schools. The event at THSS will be at 7 p.m. and the one at Westview at 6:30 p.m. Parents interested in helping at Thomas Haney can RSVP to sportsvolunteers@thss.ca and those interested in helping Westview students can get more information at wsspac@yahoo.com.

Be smart placing your bulbs
T
he biggest challenge for many gardeners today is trying to pack all the plants they really want to grow into space that’s far too small: yet often they forget the one area that could help them out - the front or back lawn. This is a perfect spot for tiny bulbs that flower in late winter. Only very early ones will suit because they need to complete most of their growth cycle before lawn mowing starts in April. They must also be very short so that they can be given a little extra die-back time by making the first two cuts as high as the lawnmower will go. High cuts also benefit lawnmowers by ensuring that hidden objects have a chance to get noticed before confronting the blade. The earliest are usually snowdrops. Though the leaves grow fairly tall, they are often in flower early to mid-January - so early that they have at least eight weeks to replenish their energy before lawn mowing begins. Snowdrops aren’t fussy growers: but they’re happiest in moist soil that’s shady in summer. Clay suits them well. Anyone with soil that’s dry, sandy and baked in summer should try crocuses instead. The most rewarding crocus for sunny lawns is Crocus tomasinianus (also called ‘Tommys’). This is the only crocus squirrels avoid. It’s also very early and a quick spreader that’s inexpensive to obtain.. The long-lasting flowers range from pale mauve to deep purple (‘Ruby Giant’). It’s very dwarf (5-12cm) and delicate. Flowers last a very long time, then the wispy leaves elongate but shortening them somewhat

Anne Marrison Garden Talk doesn’t seem to affect their resilience. I should mention, though, that some gardeners hate this crocus because it tends to pop up all over the garden. Each one will become a small colony in a few years. But it dies down fast, the corms are tiny and it’s easy to pull. Almost as early as snowdrops and much shorter (5-9cm) is Scilla siberica. The starry flowers are intense blue and it adapts to sun or shade. It competes poorly with thick grass. But where there are trees in or near a lawn and grass is thinner due to summer shade and root competition, this scilla this can spread into spectacular patches. Chionodoxa (‘Glory of the Snow’) likes similar conditions but it’s taller and tolerates a wide range of conditions. The
flowers are similar to scilla, but somewhat larger. C. forbesii is the one sold everywhere. It’s usually available in three colours: blue, pink and white. But my favourite is the brilliantly blue-flowered Chionodoxa sardensis, just 3” (7cm) tall at flowering time. Its seeds are contained in deep brown globes easy to detach when dry and move to colonize new places. Like Crocus tomasinianus it is not always offered in garden centres. But www. gardenimport.com usually sells both. The spreading roots of cedars, which are such a nuisance in most places can benefit lawn bulbs and corms such as Cyclamen coum that go dormant in summer and need good drainage. It helps if the cedars are high-limbed to admit some light. This cyclamen is too dwarf for lawn mowing to remove leaves. Flowering pink or white in January, it goes dormant about May and survives drought and heavy lawnmowers all summer. Leaves re-emerge with fall rains.
