Grieving mother warns against speeding by Amy Steele asteele@mrtimes.com

T

he mother of a 19-year-old Pitt Meadows man who was killed in a fiery car crash on the August long weekend wants to warn other young people about the dangers of speeding and reckless driving. Laurie Streiling’s son Sheldon died in a car crash on July 31, which ended with his Mitsubishi Eclipse erupting into flames. He was driving westbound on Lougheed Highway and swerved to avoid a turning vehicle. His vehicle then ended up sliding backwards into the eastbound lane of Lougheed Highway and he struck a Hyundai with two passengers from Mission head on. Police said in a media release that speed and aggressive driving were determined to be contributing factors. The two passengers in

the Hyundai were taken to Royal Columbian Hospital for medical treatment. There was no evidence that he had been drinking. Laurie described her son as “a great kid” who committed a “foolish act.” She said from what she understands her son was driving between 150 to 200 kilometres an hour prior to the crash. “There’s a time and a place for this type of speed. They need to be out at the Mission raceway and not on our city streets. We have lost our son because of his foolish act but he’s also impacted so many people around him from his loss,” said Laurie. “He impacted another family who was travelling home that evening, the other car that was hit.” Laurie said she’s heard the man suffered a broken wrist and the woman had to undergo surgery due to internal injuries. “He was a bigger than life personality and these young guys have got to get it through their

heads that racing like this, speeding like this and showing off it’s affecting so many people,” she said. Sheldon had been training to become a mechanic. Laurie said he loved skateboarding, snowboarding, anything to do with cars and spending quality time with his family. “He really loved his family. He was all about family and friends,” she said. “He gave everything to everybody around him. He would help anybody with anything.” Laurie said she decided to speak out in her time of grief because she doesn’t want his death to be in vain. “I want somebody to learn from this,” she said. Sheldon left behind a 16-year-old brother, Ashton, and his dad Colin and mom Laurie, as well as a girlfriend of two years. There will be a memorial service on Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. at Burkeview Chapel, which is located at 1340 Dominion Avenue in Port Coquitlam.

Festivals struggle despite popularity by Amy Steele asteele@mrtimes.com

Well-known car thief arrested

A 39-year-old man was arrested after attempting to steal a bait car on Aug. 9. The attempted theft occurred just after 2 a.m. As police officers were moving in, the suspect stopped the car and was arrested as he walked away in the 12800 block of Fern Crescent in Maple Ridge. “This arrest is very significant in that the suspect is very well known by our members for being a prolific car thief,” said Superintendent Dave Walsh. “The bait car program continues to be an excellent resource for police to catch car thieves in the act, and apprehend them with minimum risk to citizens, and our officers. Bait cars are everywhere.”

Cyclist hit by car A 20-year-old Maple Ridge cyclist had to be taken to Ridge Meadows Hospital on Aug. 8 after getting hit by a car in the 21700 block of 128 Avenue. The incident occurred at 7:30 p.m. The cyclist injured her face, hands and a knee but is expected to make a full recovery.

Gravel pit break-in

Police are investigating a break-in at a gravel pit on Jackson Road in Maple Ridge sometime between the night of Aug. 7 and the early morning hours of Aug. 8. Thieves cut through a chain link fence and stole a large generator from the site.

I

t’s been a tough time for festivals recently with provincial government gaming grants to festivals being cut and the recession affecting sponsorship from businesses, among other issues. For the first time since 1997 the Maple Ridge Jazz and Blues Festival isn’t happening this year. And although the Caribbean Festival has been gaining popularity and was successful again this year with large crowds coming out, it is also facing some new challenges. Ineke Boekhorst, one of the organizers of the Caribbean Festival and executive director of the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association, said organizers had to contend with a logistical headache after the fire department told organizers they couldn’t have a stage on McIntosh Street. “The Caribbean Festival we had to make a major change. It was meant to be a street festival and for nine years we were out on the street and we were told by the fire department that we could no longer be there because if there was an emergency they couldn’t get through to 224 Street so that was a major impact for us and we really actually considered to move it to Pitt Meadows

or somewhere else because really the Caribbean Festival is outgrowing Maple Ridge a bit,” said Boekhorst. The festival decided to put the stage up on the southwest corner of Memorial Peace Park on property that the district is eventually hoping will be developed into a hotel. “If that’s lost from the festivals I think that will majorly cut into the amount and size of festivals that we can have in Maple Ridge. It’s so incorporated now into the park that it’s almost unimaginable not to have that space anymore,” said Boekhorst. Assistant fire chief Mark Smitton explained that the fire hydrant on 224 Street was moved to the west side of the street during recent downtown revitalization construction. If the stage was on McIntosh Street the fire department wouldn’t be able to access the hydrant because the section of 224 Street in front of Memorial Peace Park is full of vendors for the festival. The fire department also needs to be able to access the Leisure Centre, The ACT and other buildings surrounding the Memorial Peace Park so it needs to be able to access the ring road around the park, he said. Boekhorst said the festival was also forced to limit the number of vendors this year, who all pay fees

Car windows smashed Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the person or people involved in smashing the windows of a vehicle in the 11700 block of 236 Street in Maple Ridge. The damage occurred between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Aug. 28.

Portable targetted A 28-year-old Maple Ridge man was arrested for attempting to break into a portable classroom at the Arthur Peake Continuing Learning Centre in the 23100 block of 116 Avenue on August 8.

to the festival, because of restrictions on where the vendors were allowed to set up. They could only be right in front of Memorial Peace Park. “The craft vendors are really what pays for the festival. We have to raise the funds. These festivals are all volunteer based. I think that was a big point for the Jazz and Blues Festival. (Organizers) could not find enough funding to keep it going. It costs a lot of money to put together a festival and it’s really hard with all these government cuts and then the economic pressures to the businesses that are normally your sponsors,” said Boekhorst. Boekhorst said there was also “a little bit of opposition” from businesses on Spirit Square that didn’t want to see 224 Street closed to traffic because it affected parking in front of their stores. “Spirit Square was really developed to extend the park into the street and now as it turned out the businesses are not really that happy so it seems like a total shame that we spent all that money and all the effort to have that beautiful spirit square there and we can’t really use it,” said Boekhorst. Boekhorst points out that the Caribbean Festival was developed 10 years ago by business owners to draw people into downtown Maple Ridge to shop. “Our intention for the festivals is to bring people to downtown Maple Ridge that will ultimately all of a sudden find out that there is something in downtown Maple Ridge and maybe go shopping and use the services we have downtown and show them how beautiful downtown Maple Ridge is. We should be working with tourism, the district, economic development to bring out more of these festivals because they showcase Maple Ridge is what they do,” she said. Boekhorst believes festivals need more support in order to continue to thrive and points to the demise of the jazz and blues festival – at least for this year. “It’s bad that the jazz and blues festival is gone. That’s really something that had

Other schools, such as the University of B.C., Simon Fraser University, Langara College and the B.C. Institute of Technology, are also reporting increases in student applications this year, likely a result of the economic downturn.

❚ News Protests

Anti-HST protestors rally on eve of petition review by Jennifer Saltman Postmedia Network

Harmonized sales tax opponents rallied in Vancouver Sunday, three days before Elections BC finishes its review of an antiHST petition. Fight HST organized the event, which saw more than 70 people with signs lining both sides of West Georgia Street from Denman to the Stanley Park entrance. The 12-per-cent sales tax, which replaces the federal goods and services tax and the provincial sales tax, came into effect on July 1. “This [rally] is to show British Columbians that this fight is not over,” said Eddie Petrossian, one of the event organizers. Johann Baart, a 28-yearold Richmond man, wore a B.C. flag as a cape and used an air horn as he held a sign reading “People Want CHANGE.” Baart thinks the HST is a bad tax, but said honesty and accountability are also important. “I believe strongly that the government is not listening to the people. They’ve taken a hard line on this and they’re not listening,” he said

in between supportive honks from passing cars. A short distance away 52year-old Julie Hunter shouted “Fight the HST, fight for democracy,” while waving a B.C. flag. “I just felt this is a good opportunity to get the message out there and get a bit of public feeling going,” the Vancouver resident said. “It’s never too late.” David Huntley, 73, held two signs as he explained his reason for rallying: “We have to put the pressure on the government to do the right thing, and we’re going to keep doing it.” Huntley stood next to 79-year-old veteran Len Johnston. Johnston said he fought for freedom and democracy in Korea, “and I haven’t stopped fighting since.” “It’s a shame that the Liberal Party has been so shredded and corrupted,” said the longtime Liberal supporter. Fight HST regional organizer for Maple RidgePitt Meadows-Mission, 29-year-old Corisa Bell, said that people seem more angry about the tax since July 1. “It’s definitely caused

people to be more outraged than before,” she said. “If people don’t stand up for what they believe in, this is the way it’s always going to be. People need to speak up.” Former B.C. premier Bill Vander Zalm launched a petition against the tax on April 6. The petition needs the support of 10 per cent of registered voters in all 85 B.C. ridings to force an HST repeal bill into the legislature or trigger a non-binding referendum. Vander Zalm delivered more than 700,000 signatures to Victoria on June 30. Elections BC has until Aug. 11 to verify signatures on the petition. On July 5 Vander Zalm launched a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the HST and suggesting that the B.C. cabinet unlawfully imposed the tax without legislative authority. A hearing for that case is scheduled for Aug. 16 in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver. In June a business coalition filed for judicial review of the decision to approve the initiative petition and its draft bill in the first place.

Reducing garbage better than burning

Metro Vancouver’s directors voted to perhaps look at burning some of the region’s vast flow of trash, rather than burying it in leaky landfills. The arguments over this could take up numerous editorials and articles, and no doubt will over the next few months. Will waste to energy dump too much soot and pollutants in the Fraser Valley airshed? Are some residents going to take the brunt while others get to breathe clean air? Can the system ever be made truly clean? However, the current system couldn’t continue. Burying garbage and hoping it goes away shows that as a society, we’re no better than a six-year-old hiding brussels sprouts under the table to avoid eating them. As everyone from the Metro Vancouver directors to Premier Gordon Campbell has said, we need to stop creating so much garbage, period. We’re getting pretty good at recycling (although we could improve) but reducing is where we need to make great strides. This is where everyone from the average citizen to the federal and provincial governments is going to have to work collectively. We need to reduce packaging, bags, boxes, and foam peanuts. We need to stop tossing out millions of cardboard coffee cups, paper napkins and burger boxes. We need old solutions and new ones to slash the amount of junk we throw out after preparing a meal with supermarket ingredients. And what we can’t eliminate, we need to recycle in an expanded blue box system. Citizens are going to have to pull up their socks and take part, but governments will have to show some real backbone. They’ll probably have to put some serious money into this, and they’ll have to face down the many, many corporations who won’t want to change. Abbotsford Times

Shop at your local market

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents should take advantage of farmers’ markets open on both Saturdays and Sundays – the Haney market runs on Saturdays at Memorial Peace Park and the Pitt Meadows one runs at Osprey Village at the foot of Bonson on Sundays. The momentum is building at local markets where residents can buy directly from producers, reducing the distance food travels to get to your plate. Let’s keep buying local to reduce our impact on the environment and help ensure a viable future for coming generations. ■ Your View Last week’s question Did you do a ‘staycation’ over the B.C. Enough toys for next year, too Carrier of the week Editor:

I would like to thank you for printing the story about the missing toys for the Carnival at Heritage Days. The community response was astonishing. We received so many toys we have enough for next year. Darlene Slevin, the Special Events Assistant for Parks & Leisure, was very much touched by the girls who came with their mothers and donated their toys. She had the same experience I had when my friends from Curves Maple Ridge brought in their children’s toys to share with the children of Maple Ridge. We had a wonderful day for the carnival and the many children and their parents were so delighted with the fun and wonderful prizes. It gave those of us who took part in this event a lot of joy to watch the faces of the people. We saw many toys and happy children walking through the park. What a wonderful community I live in and once more I have been amazed at the generosity and caring of the people of Maple Ridge. Thank you for sharing. Diane Cougar, committe member for Heritage Days Maple Ridge

Traffic problems in Hammond Editor: Re: Hammond rich with history, Aug. 3, 2010 I’m writing in response to your article titled “Hammond rich with history.” I’ve lived in the area for only three years now but from the answers given to me regarding why certain necessary improvements such as street lighting, sidewalks and stop lights haven’t been added it’s always the same excuse... “we are trying to protect the character of the neighborhood.” This comes from longtime residents who have petitioned various councils over the years. Excuse my ignorance but any neighborhood with local

access to elementary schools and play parks should always have a safe corridor for kids to walk on. There are two entry points into my area of Hammond: Lorne and Ditton which both cross train tracks and have no stoplights for traffic to give way to pedestrians or other motorists. This alone creates a huge safety issue for adults and children trying to cross Maple Crescent. Anybody who has tried to cross Maple Crescent on a busy day (which is frankly all day, every day) can say it’s worse than crossing Lougheed Highway at night. It’s worth noting too that both Ditton and Lorne have speeding motorist problems. Basically people in the area believe our part of town is their personal drag strip. Another safety problem is that only Ditton up to Charlton Street has a sidewalk but no connecting path for pedestrians to follow deeper into the neighborhood. Again it’s as though once you cross, the tracks it’s no man’s land. Why can’t council in Maple Ridge understand that you can protect the character of the neighborhood and protect its citizens and children at the same time? A simple horseshoe path of sidewalk leading down both Ditton and Lorne Ave crossing around the back end of the park off Princess street would create a safe corridor for people to enter and exit the area. This would do wonders for moms trying to get their kids to school safely. Plus adding stoplights at both Lorne and Ditton intersecting with Maple Crescent would be a perfect way to slow down people using Maple Crescent as a bypass for Lougheed Hwy traffic. Or if the cost of stoplights is too much of an issue for the city perhaps a roundabout at Lorne Avenue and Ditton Street would be a decent compromise? The Golden Ears Bridge brought more traffic to the area but the large majority of traffic on Maple is still people using it as a way to

get past all the stoplights on Lougheed and connect back to the Haney Bypass along River Road. Council may argue that stoplights would create a safety hazard in relation to the train tracks but how then can they explain the stoplights at 203rd and Maple Crescent? Why not an uncontrolled intersection there too? The article noted that the people of Hammond need to come together to fight densification and property use changes. I’m of the opinion the people of Hammond who’ve lobbied for improvements and change already in the past are disillusioned with city council. Why bother raising a voice at all if it’s just going to be ignored? If the potential changes and densification bring needed infrastructure updates then I say bring it on. M. Reinhart Maple Ridge

More trucks on Ford than in Whispering Falls Editor: Re: Whispering Folks Loud and Clear, July 30, 2010 Since moving from noisy Johnson Street in Coquitlam over three years ago, we found the “quiet” area of Ford Road on a Sunday afternoon and moved here. What a mistake. There are more dump and logging trucks going up and down Ford Road than there ever were on Johnson Street up to the Plateau. We don’t mind the area so much and will stay here but with trucking companies paying the City of Pitt Meadows a “right of access”

to cut through a two-lane residential neighbourhood is “unfathomable” as Doug Buker puts it. I’d like to point out that the residents on Ford Road also have a plethora of concerns, including vandalism, garbage, noise, and parking, as well as drug dealing and loud bikes. Don’t forget we also live beside an airport. The City of Pitt Meadows is more than aware of the problems of this road yet they do nothing – as long as council doesn’t have to live on Ford Road, they don’t care. The city recently completed a truck road adjacent to Harris Road and Airport Way but the trucking companies do not want to use this way because they already have the means to drive through a two-lane residential neighbourhood in close proximity (and every so often to drive down behind) an elementary school. One afternoon last summer I sat out for one hour and counted 30 trucks. The trucks are not just “using” the road but “abusing” the privilege. The trucks have all but destroyed the pavement – our city has taken no measures to care for the pavement, just merely patch it up. Lastly, the hauling activity takes place daily (excluding weekends). Beginning some days as early as 3 a.m. there are dump trucks with their ponies rumbling through – yet the Harris/Airport route is largely unused. I’m sorry that Doug Buker and the 20+ people are upset about a bit of noise – they’d be a lot more grateful of their location if they spent six months on Ford Road. L. Walker Pitt Meadows

Jean Ann McKirdy of the Local Ride Women’s MTB Team has been chosen to represent Canada at the 2010 Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships in Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC on Sept. 5 in the elite women’s Cross Country Olympic discipline event. Ever since the site of the 2010 MTB Worlds was given to the Canadian venue of Mont-Sainte-Anne, the duo has had the race in their sights. “It was announced several years ago that [Mont] Sainte-Anne would get the Worlds in 2010, and it’s been a goal of mine this whole time,” said McKirdy in a media release. “It will be amazing to represent Canada on home soil.” McKirdy has strong ties to Mont-Sainte-Anne, having raced there nearly every year of her 10-year competitive cycling career for the annual World Cup series stop, as well as national events. McKirdy and her teammate Sandra Walter of Coquitlam have had strong results so far this season, with wins on the provincial road and mountain bike circuits, along with several podiums in the Canada Cup series. “When I’m standing at the starting line at Worlds in September, it’ll be with the knowledge that I wouldn’t be there without the support of my family, friends, and sponsors,” said McKirdy.

Consider that four of Maple Ridge’s top five scorers had never played a WLA playoff game prior to 2010. Derek Lowe, the only one of those five that has playoff experience, wasn’t in the lineup Saturday night. Most of the ‘Bellies played in the Mann Cup last season. Game three actually looked reminiscent of game one in New West with the Burrards up 4-2 after the first period. This is where inexperience may very well have kicked in, as New West proceeded to shut out the second period while scoring six goals of their own. Maple Ridge won the third period 5-4, but had dug themselves too deep of a hole to be able to stage a comeback. Game four happened last night after the TIMES’ deadline. Although the Burrards were down 2-1 going into it, they’re at home in what will have been a crucial turning point in the season. If they won, they go back to Queen’s Park in a 2-2 series tie with another guaranteed home game. Losing will have them playing for their lives in the most hostile environment in the league.

Avoid backpack pitfalls W knock into other people. If that backpack is full of heavy, cumbersome books or even a laptop computer, an inadvertent bump by the pack can cause injuries. Also, backpacks taken off and placed in bus aisles can be a tripping hazard. Students also can be injured if a heavy pack falls on them. Children tucking backpacks into lockers or classroom cubbies may find that they slide out and hit another classmate. Backpacks change the way individuals walk. Because the person is carrying around extra weight, he or she may lose balance or trip and fall, especially

when going down steps. To avoid these secondary hazards from backpacks, consider these tips. * Don’t overload a backpack. Carry only what is necessary. If too many books are the issue, parents should talk to the school administrators and teachers to reach a happy medium regarding textbook usage. * When on the bus, safely store the backpack on a lap or under the seat. Be sure straps or the pack itself is not extending into the aisle. * Avoid rolling backpacks, which can be difficult to roll. Some schools ban these styles because of tripping hazards. * Recognize how much space the backpack takes up when worn. Be conscious of others when turning around or entering a confined space. * Hold on to stair rails and do not run with a heavy backpack to help avoid slips and falls. * Choose a lightweight backpack. Canvas backpacks are generally lighter in weight than leather backpacks. Do not add extra weight unnecessarily.

hen it comes to backpack safety, most people tend to think about injuries caused by a heavy backpack or one worn improperly. However, there are other dangers associated with backpacks and caution should be used. Backpacks come in all shapes and sizes and can be a handy tool for students or adults. When worn correctly, with weight evenly distrubuted across the back and shoulders, backpacks can be safer and more effective than using a purse or briefcase. But many people wear overly loaded backpacks slung over one shoulder, which can pose problems with posture and lead to back issues. In addition to the physical strain backpacks can cause, they can be a danger in other ways. Many people fail to recognize how much space a backpack can take up. Entering the tight quarters of a school bus or commuting on a train or bus means a bulky backpack can

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Pricing are in effect until closing Friday, August 13, 2010 or while stock lasts. We reserve the right to limit quantities. Some items may have ‘plus deposit and/or environmental charge’ where applicable.

We feature GREAT SPECIALS every week to save you even more

*PRICE MATCH. We determine a major competitor based on our assessment of a number of relevant factors that may vary by region. “Items you buy most” refers to our top selling products. We check competitor pricing on the majority of items you buy most on a weekly basis; and in all cases, no less than quarterly. We may not match a competitor’s short term promotional pricing activities(ie. one day sales or ‘door crashers’) or other promotional pricing activities such as ‘2 for 1’ or ‘buy 1 get 1 free’. We do not Price Match all items at all times; where we have Price Matched an item, it will be identified in-store. This is not a price match guarantee where we match any competitor price you find. PRICE CUT. Longer term price reductions on items identified in-store. “Items that matter most to you” refers to our top selling products. WEEKLY SPECIAL. Typically in effect from Saturday to Friday of each week on items identified in-store and/or in flyer.
