Hammond rich with history There is much to preserve in one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Maple Ridge, but it will take the will of its residents to keep its charm and character. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

H

ammond is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Maple Ridge and a drive through the area reveals many vestiges of its rich history. But given its proximity to the new Golden Ears Bridge, pressure is mounting to densify in the predominantly single-family residential area. “I think it’s going to be a struggle to maintain Hammond’s character and personality and to keep its history alive,” said Val Patenaude, director of the Maple Ridge Museum and Archives. “The development pressure is only going to increase. It’s difficult in these days with the land values that there are to retain the village aspect with the small houses that only take up a portion of their lot.” Hammond was one of the first

real neighbourhoods in Maple Ridge, Patenaude said. Port Hammond was going to become the main terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway. “Port Hammond was thought to be destined for very great things,” Patenaude said, but, alas, it was supplanted by New Westminster whose location was more desirable. In recent months two applications for development in Hammond have come to Maple Ridge council, one for an industrial building on Maple Crescent Way beside the mill and the other for an apartment building on three lots on 206 Street. Maple Ridge councillor Michael Morden said he thinks everything is wrong about the application on Maple Crescent to rezone the property from town centre commercial to special industrial, which will allow for a two-storey industrial warehouse building. It would have made more sense

to have a mixed residential and commercial development there with retail stores at ground level and residences above, he said. “Nobody bothered to consult anyone in Hammond about this (application),” Morden said.

“The key is neighbourhood consultation.” At this point, Hammond needs a neighbourhood association and an area plan in order to revitalize the historic neighbourhood, he said. He considers a Hammond area plan a higher priority than even the Albion plan that is currently being worked on. Morden added that it’s “crazy” that areas like Silver Valley where there is little infrastructure in place are being developed when an established neighbourhood like Hammond could be revitalized. The industrial building on Maple Crescent passed third reading on May 25. At that same meeting, Maple Ridge council gave first reading to rezone three lots at 206 Street and 113 Avenue from one-family urban residential to medium-density apartment residential. The area is designated neighbourhood residential in the Official Community Plan, which means it could have “limited infill,” that is, single detached homes, duplexes or triplexes. The proposed apartment building doesn’t fit with the OCP designation, a Maple Ridge staff report states, and would be only appropriate on a major road corridor. “The people of Hammond ... are going to have to get together and find a way to

maintain the personality (of the neighbourhood),” Patenaude said of future development in the neighbourhood. Patenaude gave the example of the Webster’s Corners Community Association that is consulted with when any development is planned in their area. Hammond needs a similar type of community association in order to preserve the character of the area, she said. A large part of Hammond is designated urban residential in the official community plan’s future land use schedule. Hammond is named after two brothers who came to the area in 1862 from Fenstanton, England. John was 26 when he arrived and William was 19. The Hammond brothers bought 120 acres of land on the riverfront. Four Katzie groups were thought to have occupied the land from what is now the Hammond/Interfor Mill to their present reserve on Bonson Road. The original Hammond home is located at Maple Crescent and Westfield Street. Three houses have been built on that property. But the house John Hammond lived in with his mail-order bride from Boston at Lorne Road and Waresley Street is still standing. See HAMMOND, Page 3

Upfront What’s Online

On our website, we have a sound slide with a mix of old pictures and new ones along with interviews about Hammond’s history and where it is headed.

Daycare, preschool reviews online A Vancouver mother has launched a website called theshortylist.ca to feature reviews of Metro Vancouver daycares, preschools and elementary schools. Karen Young Chester, a mother of two preschool-aged children, said it’s difficult to find the right daycare or school because of space shortages in popular facilities, which creates waiting lists and lottery systems. Chester, a stay-at-home mom and freelance video producer, said online information is scarce. Statistics are available, along with school rankings, but those numbers lack the personal, anecdotal information she seeks. “I usually go online to do research and I discovered it’s very hard to find any information about individual schools and daycares. It seems like there’s this real absence of information.” She asked total strangers at the neighbourhood playground for recommendations and tips when she was searching for child care. “I suppose this is just a way of taking that playground chat online, so you will have contact with a more diverse set of parents and get more opinions.” A soft launch of The Shorty List is underway and users can submit reviews, but the full launch won’t take place until the fall.

Correction In the Friday, July 30 issue, the “Ministry tells school to alter web details” article stated that the school administration asked parents to pay a $12,000 bond. In fact, it was the society, the Vancouver International Primary and Secondary School Society that asked parents to pay the bond. The TIMES apologizes for the error.

HAMMOND, From Page 1 Hammond was still a vibrant neighbourhood in the 1950s and was a great place to be a kid – there was a stadium and lots of families. “As a kid, it was great because this place was full of nothing but families – there were a hundred boys,” said John Grasser, a long-time Hammond resident and creator of the “smile garden” at the corner of Dartford and Battle streets. Port Hammond Junction was registered on Aug. 3, 1883 at the New Westminster Courthouse. Grasser doesn’t understand why the sign put up by the historical society called the area “Historic Hammond” although it was originally intended as a port, like its neighbour to the east Port Haney. “If they can put a sign up saying ‘Port Haney,’ our sign should say ‘historic Port Hammond,’” Grasser said. In 1882, construction on the railway began through Maple Ridge and this resulted in growth and prosperity. Hammond was the site of a tent town for Chinese labourers, a supply depot and temporary railroad construction headquarters. About 70 labourers died in Hammond during the construction of the railroad because of landslides. There were two stores run by Chinese immigrants. At Wo Lung’s store, along with other goods, there was opium for sale since at that time, it wasn’t illegal to import opium. The first bank opened in Hammond in 1908 and it was the Bank of Hamilton. The first telephone exchange came to Hammond in 1910. Hammond and Haney both got electricity in 1912 supplied by the Stave Lake Power Co. The mill was established in 1910 and was first called the Baily Lumber Company. In 1916, the mill became the Hammond Cedar Mill after it was rebuilt with drying kilns and a cedar siding planer. The mill became one of the largest employers in Maple Ridge and a driver for development in Hammond. It has continued to employ Maple Ridge residents over the years. The mill became the largest cedar processing mill in the world and employed generations – and kept families in Hammond.

The Interfor Hammond cedar mill continues to produce cedar products which are exported to the United States, Europe and Asia. Troy Landreville/TIMES

“It has led to a level of continuity in Hammond that you just don’t find very often around the region,” Patenaude said. Grasser worked at the mill from 1969 to 1971, along with many other Maple Ridge residents. “That place was, as far as working, goes a rather hard place to work,” Grasser said. “It was bull work - you worked hard. It wasn’t unfair none but you worked hard.” Homes were built in Hammond for mill workers – single-family homes for families and rooming houses for single men, many of which still exist as apartment buildings. Currently there are about 150 workers at the mill and many of the processes have been automated. There is a sign on 207 Street by the field and baseball diamonds ‘Hammond Stadium,’ but there is no actual stadium in the park. There was a wooden Nat Bailey-style stadium in Hammond when Grasser was growing up, but between the four years he was gone from 1965 to 1969, it disappeared. Grasser remembers going to games of the “semi-pro” league – “They all got paid for it but not much,” Grasser said of the Haney-Hammond

Luckies. He especially remembers the travelling teams of African-Americans which also put on comedy routines and played “shadow ball” – a pantomime baseball game “almost like a dance.” Grasser said the entire community would come out for baseball games at the Hammond Stadium, sometimes a few thousand people, especially when there were visiting teams from the U.S.

Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball Association was working to raise money towards building a stadium. In 2006, a preliminary budget was drawn up and the cost of a new diamond and stadium was estimated at $1.7 million. Mark Kauhane, president of the minor baseball association, said this figure would have to be looked at again since costs might have changed over the last few years. The stadium plan included

pulling down the basketball courts, a new baseball diamond, bleachers for 500 spectators, a batting cage and bull pen, a fully fenced field, and concession stand with washrooms and an announcing tower, parking lot for 103 cars. ❚ Many of the historical details are taken from Maple Ridge: A History of Settlement by the Maple Ridge Branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women.

Local mayors support Metro waste-to-energy options editorial@mrtimes.com

Metro Vancouver will go ahead with plans to investigate burning the region’s garbage – but not necessarily in Metro Vancouver. Both Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin and Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean voted in favour of that Friday. Members of Metro’s sewage and drainage district voted 63-49 in favour Friday of investigating options for a mass-burn incinerator or waste “conversion technologies” such as anaerobic digestion or gasification, both in and out of the region, to deal with 500,000 tonnes of waste that is now being dumped at the Cache Creek landfill. Earlier in July Maple Ridge council unanimously voted to send a resolution to Metro Vancouver opposing mass burn incinerators. Ridge Meadows Recycling Society has also expressed opposition to mass burn incinerators. Daykin said he voted in favour of investigating waste to energy options, including incinerators, because “it gets a whole bunch of things out on the table.” “I guess it’s a bit of a fallback position in a sense. We needed to do something today. We needed to get this thing moving forward,” said Daykin. “I voted against landfill as an option. I said in my comments it’s just as wrong in my gut to bury it as it is to burn it.” Mayor Don MacLean said Metro Vancouver needs to “go with science” not “emotion.” “I think that we have to investigate everything,” he said. “We haven’t made a decision about any technology but I don’t think we should start excluding options.” MacLean said continuing to send waste to landfills doesn’t make sense because landfills produce methane, which is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. “I have found no reports that incineration would in any discernible way increase pollution in the Fraser Valley,” he added. The Metro Vancouver decision followed hours of debate, including an earlier rejection of the same motion. The directors also threw out a recommendation by Metro chief administrative officer Johnny Carline to build an incinerator in the region, which he said would be cheaper to build and operate a facility here rather than trucking the garbage outside, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and would give

the region financial benefits in terms of selling heat and energy from the facility. He warned if Metro didn’t pursue “additional waste to energy” in region, it could then investigate a facility outside the region or, in default, expand the Cache Creek dump. The plan will now go to Environment Minister Barry Penner. If it’s approved Metro will send out requests for proposals with the hope some sort of waste to energy facility could be built by 2015. The Cache Creek dump is slated to close in 2016. The incinerator was proposed as part of the region’s solid waste management plan to dispose of the 500,000 tonnes of garbage that are now being trucked to the Cache Creek dump. But directors were split on whether an incinerator should be built in the region, outside or not at all. Burnaby Coun. Sav Dhaliwal said Metro should build an incinerator in the region “because it’s our garbage.” He said Metro should only look at other options if no community wants an incinerator or if Environment Minister Barry Penner rejects the plan. “For us to really think the health risk doesn’t belong in this region . . . is playing games not in our backyard.

This is our garbage; we should be dealing with it.” Yet Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore and Port Moody Mayor Joe Trasolini argued against considering the incinerator in the region, saying it should be taking into consideration the concerns of their neighbours in the Fraser Valley, who voted unanimously against the incinerator proposal because of fears of increased air pollution in their unique airshed. Trasolini asked why Metro spent so much time consulting the public – 35 meetings were held – if it was just going to base its decisions on science. New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright noted his community has been living beside the Burnaby incinerator for 20 years and he didn’t even know it was there. Vancouver Coun. Tim Stevenson, who voted against the proposal, questioned why Metro would even be considering shipping its garbage outside the region. Metro Vancouver produces about 1.4 million tonnes of garbage every year. The solid-waste management plan aims to raise recycling rates from 55 per cent of garbage today to 70 per cent by 2015. All the directors agreed with the plan to boost recycling and diversion rates

across with the region but noted that there needs to be some way to dispose of 1.2 million tonnes of waste that can’t be recycled. The plan will now go to provincial Environment Minister Barry Penner for final approval. Penner has previously said that Metro has other options on the table including a proposal by Covanta Energy to build an incinerator in Gold River on Vancouver Island and expanding the Cache Creek landfill.

Local woman hopes for closure on disappearance by Amy Steele asteele@mrtimes.com

S

andra Gagnon fears that she will never find out what happened to her younger sister who went missing in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside in 1997. Worse yet the Maple Ridge woman fears police will find her sister’s remains but her killer won’t have to go on trial. Her sister Janet Henry is one of 68 women whose photo appeared on a police poster seeking information about women with highrisk lifestyles who had gone missing from the Downtown Eastside. Henry wasn’t one of the women whose DNA was found on Robert (Willie) Pickton’s farm but Pickton told police he murdered 49 women. So far police have charged Pickton with the murder of 33 women, 32 of them were women whose faces appeared on the poster. That could still leave 16 more women whom he killed and whom police haven’t found. Pickton was convicted of killing six women and the Supreme Court rejected an appeal of the decision on Friday. A Crown spokesperson told the media the Crown doesn’t expect to proceed with a trial against him on additional murder charges. Gagnon said she’s spent years fighting to find out what happened to her sister. “It’s heart-reaching to me because if we ever find Janet there’s nothing,” said Gagnon. Gagnon said she still thinks of her sister “all the time.” “I think to myself maybe, just maybe the police are going to come to my place and say they found her DNA. Now I’m just thinking if they come nothing’s going to happen anyway but at least we’ll know and we can have a memorial,” she said. Her sister’s disappearance has ravaged her family. Her brother Lance attended Pickton’s court case daily and one night he came home after court and had a heart attack. Gagnon blames the stress and emotional and psychological pain of the trial for his death. Meanwhile, Gagnon has suffered regular panic attacks and her doctor says she has post traumatic stress disorder. Three weeks ago she thought she was having a heart attack but it turned out it was a panic attack triggered by hearing the sound of a wood chipper outside her house. She describes her sister as a “loving, compassionate, caring person.” “She was very giving. She loved her daughter very much. Her daughter was her best friend and even before Janet went missing she said to me I want to straighten my life out so I can see (her daughter) more,” she said. Gagnon said she also feels some relief that she won’t have to hear more horrible details about Pickton’s alleged murders in a subsequent trial. Inspector Gary Shinkaruk, team leader of the Joint Missing Women’s Task Force,

INJURED IN AN ACCIDENT? COME & TALK TO US WE CAN HELP EASE THE PAIN.

Sandra Gagnon. File photo said the physical search on two of Pickton’s properties, as well as a third area, has concluded. However, he stressed there are scientific advances being made all the time and more DNA evidence could be found. “It was a very comprehensive search for DNA,” he said. “The evidence is extremely small, microscopic and there’s been advances in technology so the amount we needed to make positive DNA matches we require less than we required before,” he said. He said police are still examining some exhibits. He emphasized that police have not concluded the investigation into the missing women, including Janet Henry, where no DNA has been found. “Pickton has told us he killed 49 women and we do not disbelieve that,” said Shinkaruk. Shinkaruk said the task force is also investigating eight deaths of missing women they believe were committed to two serial killers other than Pickton but haven’t arrested anyone yet. “We’re certainly attempting to be as open and honest with all the families at this point. We currently have officers going out along with victim services people to a large number of families across Canada and the United States,” he said. “Certainly it’s been a long haul for them as we can all appreciate... We’re extremely committed to still looking for (the missing women). We remain active.” He said there are more than 50 people who are still with the task force. “It’s tragic and it’s horrific,” said Shinkaruk of what investigators have learned during the investigation. “When you think that there’s individuals out there that are preying on arguably the most helpless or defenseless of our society... It’s just unbelievably sad and shocking.” Gagnon said despite all the pain she’s suffered, “I’m doing well in my life.” She is working at the Kanaka Creek Lodge with seniors and loves the job. “I can tell you one thing. He’s not going to pull me down. I’m going to keep going,” she said.

Province cancels HST mailer to avoid inflaming critics

editorial@mrtimes.com

The B.C. government has cancelled a proposed mail campaign to support its harmonized sales tax because it says public reaction to the new tax has been better than expected. There was a sense that sending out the mailer could in fact exacerbate some of

The government had redrafted the pamphlets to take a broader look at B.C.’s economic performance, including the HST, said Hansen. But they were set to land on doorsteps in mid-August, around the same time two court challenges on the HST and the anti-HST petition were set to be heard. Hansen said he had concerns about sending the mailer during the court proceedings.

❚ Community

Donor sees the future

“It takes passion and an unending desire to excel in delivering the highest of quality and value...every step of the way. Passion to demand continual improvement in everything. Most importantly, passion to ensure the customer’s needs are always met,” Robert Grimm, Portrait Homes. This statement is true in home construction as well as healthcare and when Grimm says he wants to meet his customers’ needs he means more than the needs as a homeowner. He wants to ensure that their healthcare needs in their new community are met as well which is why he donated $50,000 to the construction of the new Emergency Department at Ridge Meadows Hospital and recently made another gift of $5,000. Thanks to this recent donation Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation is one step closer to purchasing two new cataract extraction units and monitors for Ridge Meadows Hospital. RMH performs more than 3,200 cataract surgeries each year. The majority of

patients are referred from Burnaby and New Westminster through the Tri Cities and Maple Ridge with some referrals coming from as far as Vancouver and Chilliwack. These surgeries are performed four days a week in two procedure rooms. With the constant demand for cataract surgeries the five local surgeons need the most state-of-the-art equipment to provide excellent care. “Two new cataract extraction units will dramatically increase the efficiency and safety with which we can remove cataracts. The new machines will provide a much safer working environment inside the eye, and help us remove even the densest of cataracts with ease while imparting less surgical trauma to the rest of the eye. They will also allow for a faster return of vision after surgery and in many cases allow us to perform the surgery in a shorter time. These advancements are very important and significant to our patients,” said Dr. Parkinson, an Opthamologist at Ridge Meadows Hospital.

❚ Our View

Thanks for our meals

Though many of us may be working in factories or offices, chasing the Canadian dream, the work of farming in the Fraser Valley is going stronger than ever, more than 100 years after settlers first plugged potatoes and wheat seeds into this fertile ground, and let their cows graze on flood-soaked grasses of Sumas Prairie. Unlike most places in the world, B.C. has an Agricultural Land Reserve. On that land, more often than not, you’ll find computerized dairy farms, precisely engineered fields and cutting edge technologies. The so-called “dumb” farmer, looked down upon for too long by self-important city cousins, today usually has an agricultural degree coupled with a keen and supple sense for business, a necessity in today’s cutthroat global market. If you live in the valley, thank agriculture for your job. Poultry, milk, vegetables, mushrooms and fruits, add up to close to half a billion dollars in farm gate sales – the many spin-off sectors that support agriculture add another $1.5 billion to our local economy. If you eat, thank farmers for the food on your plate, some of the best, freshest and safest in the world. What they do, they do out of pride and love, despite the endless hours and huge financial risks. Farmers are stewards and watchdogs of the land, our water supply and even our air. Farmers and all who work on the farms deserve our gratitude. Remember that next time you stop at a stand to buy fresh peppers or berries. So to all our farmers, old and new and to those to come, thanks for the meal.

Listen to this message

Beach towels usually feature colourful patterns that reinforce our idea of being near the ocean as time spent being free, on vacation, without a care in the world. But the beach towels a non-profit group is leaving at Vancouver’s Kits Beach are anything but warm and fuzzy. Emblazoned across each towel is the slogan, “You’re probably not expecting to drown today.” We hope the message doesn’t put a damper on anyone’s trip to the beach, now that the hot, sunny weather is finally here. If it helps prevent just one drowning or other water-related fatality, however, the message will be worth the minor stress it may cause beachgoers. The Community Against Preventable Injuries (www.preventable.ca), the organization leaving the towels on the beach, claims about 60 people a year die in B.C. from drowning — half of them children and youth. For years, we’ve used the term “accident” to refer to car crashes, drownings and other incidents that cause people to die. The Community Against Preventable Injuries reminds us that many so-called accidents didn’t need to happen and that the best time to think about consequences is before taking action, not after. With that in mind, enjoy your time at the beach – but don’t forget to pack your common sense. ■ Your View Last week’s question Do you support a Pitt Meadows ban on pot grow-ops, even for medicinal uses? become under-employable because of a pot bust. Also, it is costing us $3 billion annually in potential tax-revenue. Legalizing pot would literally make Canada $4-5 billion wealthier. “I think that what we’re doing is not successful,” she said. “It doesn’t make any sense to me.” But prohibition isn’t about reducing crime or drug use. It never was. The whole thing is designed to give police leverage to harass the poor, the young, people of colour, and people with non-regulation hairstyles. It is designed to keep cops busy, lawyers rich, politicos blathering, and jails full. It looks pretty successful to me. Kamp said marijuana is “largely decriminalized now in practice for small amounts.” Nonsense. Every year police bust tens of thousands of people for simple possession, and the numbers go up by several thousand every year. Look at the court dockets: It is a cash cow. If cops weren’t so

Editor:

Re: ‘Spinning Wheels’ on grow ops, TIMES, July 13 The Conservative government has no interest in legalizing marijuana because prohibition makes crime, and crime necessitates cops. The whole thing is a scam designed to accustom the public to an ongoing and ever-increasing police presence in their daily lives. It has nothing at all to do with public safety, it is all about control. “King said marijuana is so highly used it’s hard to regulate.” Nonsense. This is cut-and-paste legislation. A twelve-year-old could figure it out. “King said the amount of money being spent on criminalization of marijuana is “huge”.” Over $1 billion every year, on cops, courts, and cages, actually. Also, it costs all of us untold billions every year in as tens of thousands of Canadians

busy busting pot people, they might have to do hard things, like go look for missing women and children and catch street racers. “I think it’s safe to say our government doesn’t have any interest in legalization and little interest in decriminalization,” he said. “We don’t have an interest in the wide opening up of access to marijuana.” Of course not. Legalizing marijuana would not only reduce crime and generate tax revenue, it would restore Canadian’s sense of personal freedom – something the Harper government seems keen to beat out of us. “Kamp said there are no clinical studies proving the effectiveness of medicinal marijuana, which is why it can’t be sold in a drug store.” Colossal balderdash. There have been over 20,000 studies showing the medical effectiveness and safety of cannabis, which is exactly why it isn’t sold in a drug store: it would put dozens of other less-effective and farmore-toxic medicines right out of business. “He pointed out people can buy dried marijuana from Health Canada, grow it themselves if they have permission from Health

Canada or designate someone to grow it for them.” This system – which has been ruled unconstitutional at least four times, and which has been widely criticized as arbitrary, dysfunctional, and meanspirited – is nowhere near adequate! To even mention it is an insult. Notice how the Harperistas have a squillion dollars for jails and cops and G20 meetings and jets - but can’t even increase the staff over at one Health Canada office by 50 per cent. “What’s produced by the federal government isn’t appropriate for everybody, in fact very few.” Let’s be frank: It is categorically the worst pot in Canada. Even the “street” crap is better. A teenager could grow better pot in a shed. This is deliberate. The government has deliberately tied the hands of the producer, forcing them to not only grow ground up, chemicalladen mulch-weed but also to sing its praises in the press. It is an epic boondoggle. Also, the government pot would have to go about five steps up the ladder to get to “lousy”. Russell Barth Nepean, Ont.

o Ron Schibild, a New Westminster Salmonbellies’ rush helps prepare him for a dinner rush, and vice versa. Five nights a week, he’s a souschef at Earl’s Restaurant in Richmond. The other two evenings, he’s tending goal for the Maple Ridge Burrards. And Schibild, 24, insists he can see parallels between turning away a dozen shots on a power play and turning out a dozen meals to one table in a timely fashion. “The kitchen is such a high-energy, high-pressure situation and if something goes wrong it’s about how you pick yourself up,” Schibild said. “It’s the same thing with lacrosse. Something goes wrong and you can just give up and lose or you can dig down deep and find a way to come back. “The kitchen is a team. It gets pretty crazy in there and people need help. You’ve got stronger guys and you’ve got weaker guys. You need them to work together.

Team B.C. which includes Kevin Kwon from Pitt Meadows and Brian Jung who golfs in Pitt Meadows tied for second with Alberta at the 2010 Junior America’s Cup. Southern California started off the day with a three-shot lead entering the final round of the Junior America’s Cup at Isleta Eagle Golf Club in Albuquerque, N.M with hopes of surviving the field and the heat. The SoCal boys didn’t wilt in the heat of the summer sun either, instead running away with the 2010 team title by 13 shots at 21-under par. Jung tied for second in the individual results with eight under par and a final score of 64-70-71-205. Kwon tied for fourth in individual results with seven under par and a final score of 69-68-69-206. The 2011 Junior America’s Cup will be hosted in Mazatlan, Mexico. “I do some of the interviewing at the restaurant and one of the first questions I always ask somebody is if they’ve ever played a team sport. I don’t hold it against people who haven’t, but I know that somebody who has understands working in an environment with other people.” The Burrards have been cooking a little this year, so to speak. Their 10-7 win over the Victoria Shamrocks recently, which featured a 36-save, first-star performance from Schibild helped propel them into the playoffs, their first postseason games since 2005. Maple Ridge coach Daren Fridge insists that Schibild is a major reason why they’re in this spot. Schibild got his eyes tested in the offseason and he’s wearing contacts for the first time, which is obviously part of it, but he’s

local.” “In a year or two, if we see even more demand for weeds then I guess we will know if the restaurants are leading the way,” said a more skeptical Healey. Whether consumers are prepared to follow chefs and incorporate wild foraged greens into their everyday diet remains to be seen, but their impact on the popularity of organic produce and locally produced food has benefited farmers.

Y

ou might not want them in your lawn but the city’s top chefs are willing to pay top dollar for dandelions and other high quality weeds, organic farmers say. “My salad mix is about 25 per cent wild plants anyway,” said Paul Healey of Hannah Brook Farm in Maple Ridge. “But there’s been a huge surge of fine dining chefs buying all these wild plants that are essentially weeds.” Lumiere is a regular buyer of ox-eyed daisy, while Gorilla Food favours the dreaded dandelion. “There’s been a real trend among restaurants toward wild foraging crops,” said Healey, who grows premium salad greens and vegetables for 27 restaurants and has a waiting list of seven others. Glorious Organics Co-op has set aside more than two acres of land to go wild to fill orders for purslane, wild sorrels and other weeds, according to co-op member Susan Davidson. The Aldergrove farm has been supplying salad greens to high-end restaurants since winning a contract to provide the house salad for the Northwest Territories

pavilion at Expo 86. “Pre-cut salads were not even a known product at the time and that launched us into the restaurant trade,” she said. Since then Glorious Organics has thrived on a signature line of salads that contain no lettuces, because they reduce shelf life, Davidson said. “We produce a salad that is quite novel.” “We’ve done a lot of work to find out what’s edible, what’s nutritious, what has a reasonable shelf life and what will grow in our particular microclimate,” she explained. “We also pick our edible weeds when

they are in their prime, like chickweed and dandelion and shepherd’s-purse and ox-eyed daisies.” Glorious Organics has about seven acres under cultivation and gleans weeds, wild flowers and nettles from another two to three acres on the edge-lands, she said. Davidson opines that chefs such as John Bishop have led mainstream consumers to organics. “The foodie community really looks to these chefs to set the standard and let them know what is appropriate,” she said. “It started out with organic and now layered in is the whole incentive to eat

D R I V E- I N M OV I E N I G H T S Paul Healey supplies several Vancouver gourmet restaurants with cultivated and wild salad greens from Hannah Brook Farm, his organic Maple Ridge farm. Crops that are in demand include watercress, plots of chervil and wild sorrels, and borage. Ric Ernst/Postmedia Network ORGANIC, From Page 15 The growth in demand for organic foods in B.C. has been explosive over the past 10 years. The number of B.C. farms producing organic food increased more than 40 per cent between 2001 and 2006. British Columbians eat 26 per cent of the organic food sold in Canada. It all adds up to good news for the agricultural sector. While the number of farms in Canada dropped 20 per cent between 1986 and 2006, the number of farms

in B.C. increased from 19,063 to 19,844, up 4.1 per cent. Both Davidson and Healey said the growth of farmers’ markets has made a positive impact on the bottom line, especially since restaurants can be slow to pay their bills, often taking three to six months to settle accounts. “The restaurant trade has been very good to us but also somewhat erratic,” said Davidson. “With the farmers’ markets, you get immediate feedback from your customers and you also go home with a bag of cash at the end of the day.”
